What is the San Carlos Youth Center Foundation? The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation financially supports the Youth Center facility, equipment, and programs/scholarships not covered by the City. The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation was established as a California nonprofit in 1993 by a group of San Carlos citizens to raise the funds necessary to build the San Carlos Youth Center in Burton Park. The San Carlos Youth Center opened its doors to the community in September, 1999. While the City of San Carlos and the Parks and Recreation Department maintain authority over the San Carlos Youth Center programs and staffing, The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation and their Board of Directors continues to raise and distribute funds used to maintain and improve the facility, as well as supplement cost, programs and scholarships not covered by the city.

ADULT ACTIVITIES

Dog Obedience (Ages 18+) BEGINNING: In this class your dog is taught sit, down, stay, come, heel, and easy (walking nicely at the end of the leash without pulling). The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. The dog is also taught to perform things and to willingly do or not do things, not just be prevented from doing them. Verbal and/or physical praise from owner is given, which builds a relationship between owner and dog. Any specific problems you are having will be addressed and cured in class or by a lifestyle change at home. INTERMEDIATE: This class will instruct students in off-leash control. This is done with the addition of a 30-foot long line. You will need a 6-foot leather leash for both classes. All dogs must have current rabies/ distemper vaccinations and be a minimum of 4-months old. Special nylon choke collar included in fee. Children 11 years and up are welcome to attend class with a registered parent. Paige Tyson Basketball Court # 1 at Burton Park

Stretch, Strength and Balance Exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels, and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance, or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes. Free M/W/F 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

October 1 – October 7, 2019 The theme of this year’s Active Aging Week is “Redefining Active” because active aging is about so much more than just exercise. It’s about broader engagement - physically, socially, cognitively, spiritually, and professionally. Active aging is about engaging with family, friends and/or community, learning and trying new things, volunteering, mentoring, pursuing further professional development or entrepreneurial endeavors, traveling, maintaining an active spiritual/religious life, and leading a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and other forms of stress-management. Simply put, active aging is about staying positively engaged in all aspects of life - which ultimately benefits both the individual and broader society. Get involved in this year’s Active Aging Week and participate in one or more of the following: • Fitness Class Demos • Fencing • Health Lectures • 5K Walk • Healthy Meals
