A Fee Assistance Program, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, may be available to help San Carlos residents participate in San Carlos Parks & Recreation classes and programs. Highlands Park Play Area Renovation

Ensuring quality living through San Carlos Parks & Recreation

Formerly the site of the athletic fields for San Carlos High School, the land for Highlands Park was obtained in 1986. The children’s play area was completed in 1998. The City of San Carlos, together with the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, has identified Highlands Park Play Area Renovation as their next fundraising project. The Foundation successfully raised over $400,000 in private donations for Burton Park’s Phase I renovations, unveiled in 2009, and $250,000 in private donations for Burton Park’s Phase II renovations, completed in 2014. The City of San Carlos and the Parks and Recreation Foundation are seeking community partners to assist with raising funds to complete the Highlands Park Play Area Renovation. The project cost is $750,000 for the playground area. New restrooms will also be installed at a cost of $500,000. Features of the playground renovation will include a new pathway as the entrance into the play area; gated tot entrance; concrete seat wall; poured in place rubber safety surfacing; upgraded Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) path to the upper field; sun deck and enhanced play features, including an Oodle swing, tree house with bridge connection and independent climbing pieces. The completion of this project is anticipated around summer 2017.

Celebrate the springtime while learning all about baby animals. We will explore the life cycles of a number of domestic animals including rabbits, chickens, sheep/goats. We will also explore the life cycles of some local wildlife such as deer, squirrels and a California favorite, the Banana Slug. Held at the Laureola Park building we will bring the fun science of summer camps to your spring vacation. Filled with many of Robin’s wonderful live animals this camp promises to be unforgettable. We will do 10 different science projects and experiments to examine how parents care for their young and how these baby animals grow. Youth Advisory Council What is the YAC?

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an all volunteer advisory council to the San Carlos City Council comprised of Middle School and High School Teens.

What types of projects do they do?

The YAC strengthens the image of community for our young people in San Carlos. We promote health and wellness in conducting workshops on teen issues and advise the City Council on youth related programs. We foster human development by offering activities and events suggested by youth, for youth. The YAC does volunteer work throughout the community. The YAC helped fundraise and build the San Carlos Youth Center and continue to recommend ideas for ongoing programs and operations.

The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation Our Youth Deserve a Strong Foundation financially supports the Youth Center facility, equipment, and programs/scholarships not covered by the City.

The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation was established as a California non profit in 1993 by a group of San Carlos citizens to raise the funds necessary to build the San Carlos Youth Center in Burton Park. The San Carlos Youth Center opened its doors to the community in September, 1999. While the City of San Carlos and the Parks and Recreation Department maintain authority over the San Carlos Youth Center programs and staffing, the San Carlos Youth Center Foundation and its Board of Directors continues to raise and distribute funds used to maintain and improve the physical facility, as well as suppement costs, suplemental programs, and scholarships not covered by the city.

The Youth Center Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fundraising goal for 2017 is $150,000. The priorities for these funds include: n Kitchen Remodel n Supplemental Programs n Organizing/Storage System for the back packs in the entry of the Youth Center n Additional Furniture and Fixtures

Extreme Excursions is an adventure trip series designed to maximize fun with the goal of providing safe, supervised, and constructive outlets for youth and teens ages 10-17 during school breaks! Participants will have the opportunity to make new friends, experience team and personal challenges, build character, learn responsibility, and have lots of fun at destinations all over the bay area. Classes of two students will be converted into four lessons. Students provide their own rackets. This is the perfect class for the true beginner or for anyone not ready to dive into cutting glass just yet. In this fun and easy beginner workshop, you’ll create your own trivet or picture frame using beautiful pre-cut sparkling art glass, mirrored tiles, glitter tiles, and much more. Standing Pilates takes you off your mat and onto your feet. There are over 75 different exercises to build strength, balance, flexibility and coordination skills. BEGINNING: In this class your dog is taught sit, down, stay, come, heel and easy (walking nicely at the end of the leash without pulling). The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. Outdoor Adventures n n n Star Gazing at Crestview Park

Bring your binoculars, telescopes, star guides, and lounge chairs for some informal star gazing at Crestview Park in San Carlos. See how many different things you can identify in the night sky! Arrive before dark; please park on Crestview Drive. Bring small flashlights only with red lens. Dress warmly and wear a hat. All ages. No registration or fee required. This is a popular spot for amateur astronomers so there could be telescopes. Caution! Please don’t touch a telescope without permission; parents, please watch your children.

Challenge Hikes

The Adult Community Center now serves meals five days a week, offering lunch on Monday-Thursday and a hearty breakfast on Fridays! Senior exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Attitudinal Healing is based on the principle that it is not other people or situations that cause us distress. Rather, it is our own thoughts and attitudes that are responsible for our distress and the actions we take as a result of those thoughts and attitudes can hurt us. Healing results when we concentrate on changing our own attitudes rather than trying to change the attitudes of others. It’s important that your blood pressure be within a healthy range. While high blood pressure rarely has symptoms, the good news is that it can be diagnosed using a simple test with a blood pressure monitor. The Adult Community Center offers “FREE” blood pressure screenings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 11:00am12:00pm, provided by Sequoia Hospital. No appointments necessary!

Transportation Redi-Wheels — Redi-Wheels is a transportation service for people who cannot use the regular public bus system. It is part of SamTrans Transportation for Mobility Impaired. A Lyft driver will come to your house within a few minutes and bring you to the ACC. When you are finished enjoying your visit at the ACC, Lyft will get you a safe ride back home. The San Carlos Adult Community Center is a unique and charming place for meetings and events and is conveniently located for easy access from both Highway 101 and 280. The recently renovated facility features new floors, bay windows with a view of our beautifully landscaped grounds, an outdoor patio area with teakwood furniture, fire pit and gas BBQ, and a commercial kitchen. Available amenities include 6-foot banquet tables, 60-inch round dining tables, banquet chairs and a baby grand piano. The facility may be reserved for private functions up to one year in advance. Online Registration Account

To register online, create an account by visiting www.cityofsancarlos.org/register and click on the “Create My Account” tab. You will be prompted to fill out all information necessary to build your account...just don’t forget to add the kids! You may also complete an “Account Request Form” found online for us to create your account for you. Just submit the completed form by email to recreation@cityofsancarlos.org or visiting us at the Adult Community Center, located at 601 Chestnut Street.

Resident/Non-Resident Fees

Resident (R) fees apply to anyone with a home San Carlos mailing address. Non-Resident (NR) fees apply to anyone living in another city.

Refund Policy

If you withdraw from a class at least five or more working days before the class starts, a refund less $10 processing fee will be issued. Special policies apply for Adult Trips/Tours and Adventure Camps. Full refunds are given for classes cancelled by the Parks & Recreation Department.
