Utility Box Mural Project Update
This past January, the Utility Box Mural Program was presented to City Council as part of the City’s Public Art Master Plan. The project and funding were approved by City Council. Parks & Recreation opened the “Call for Local Artists” in mid-May. Thirty-nine artists submitted artwork proposals, some with multiple designs. The Public Art Task Force (consisting of a City Council member, two Parks, Recreation and Culture Commissioners, a resident and staff member) met and reviewed all artwork proposals. Out of over 50 artwork submissions, the committee recommended the top 19 pieces for the utility boxes. When making the selections, the Task Force took into consideration the artistic excellence, innovation and originality of each piece. The Task Force also considered the following criteria: n n n
n
Does the art meet the goals of the project? Does the art transform the area?
Does the art relate to the area where the utility box is located? Does the art show the City’s unique characteristics, historic heritage, or a key activity?
Selected artists began painting boxes in September and wrapped up in November. As part of the project, the City has applied an anti-graffiti coating to all boxes to prevent graffiti and fading of the art.
For a map of the locations of the Utility Boxes, visit www.CityofSanCarlos.org/pr. We hope you enjoy the new public art in town!

Recreation classes for little ones offer many benefits. Early exposure to music helps develop areas of the brain that involve language and reasoning. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and solve problems. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, and socially. Sports will build motor skills, teach responsibility and teamwork, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Kids that are active are more likely to continue being active as they get older.

Personal Finance, Banking and Finance (Ages 9-15 yrs)
Middle school is an excellent time to start learning about money management which helps in creating a foundation for students to become financially independent in their lives later. Since there are no courses about financial literacy in our K-12 curriculum, and it is a very important skill to have, students must seek supplement education. Our personal finance series is the solution. This course teaches the different types of vehicles in which they can invest their money to grow. They learn the risks and returns involved in each of the types of investments, as well as understand the strategies to use before selecting any method. Is Certificate of Deposit or the Stock market the way to go? These are questions students will know how to answer! Students play a fun and practical stock market game throughout the course to understand the risks of investments. Empowerment through personal finance builds a secure future. Start early! This approach allows children to indulge in stimulating academic exercises in short cycles without feeling the classroom burn. They are also able to channel their passions and explore their creative side through our daily fun projects ranging from painting a mural, dramatic play, building a robot and campaigning to elect an official.
