Recreation classes for little ones offer many benefits. Early exposure to music helps develop areas of the brain that involve language and reasoning. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and solve problems. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, and socially. Sports will build motor skills, teach responsibility and teamwork, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Kids that are active are more likely to continue being active as they get older. Mental Skills Training – Series 1 Athletes often dedicate tons of time and energy training their physical skills, but what about the mental side? There are tons of challenges, physical and mental, that can affect how you perform in sport. Many times, physical issues stem from an underlying mental block. Uncovering the root of these challenges generally improves performance. Mental skills training has been recently recognized by elite athletes and coaches as essential to attaining consistent peak performances by developing mental toughness. This workshop will provide you with skills and tools to help you: manage nerves and energy levels before and during performance, quickly reset after a poor performance, fine-tune focus and eliminate distractions, build confidence to thrive in high-pressure situations, and develop a routine to consistently perform at your peak. Any specific problems you are having will be addressed and cured in class or by a lifestyle change at home. Intermediate: This class will instruct students in off-leash control. Are You Ready? Emergency Preparedness Planning! In an effort to better prepare our community for potential disasters, the Fire Department will be conducting free “Are You Ready” training classes. This two hour presentation will provide valuable information on topics such as creating a family/office disaster plan, assembling home/office and portable disaster supply kit, sheltering in place, evacuation procedures and preparing for and responding to specific disasters. Since we can only do our best to prevent man-made disasters and terrorism, and since we certainly can’t control “mother-nature,” it’s only a matter of time before a minor or major incident occurs in or around our immediate area. When a disaster happens and Police, Fire and Emergency Services are overwhelmed, will you be prepared to care for yourself, family, friends and neighbors? In all places, home, work or school, it pays to be ready and prepared to deal with all types of natural and man-made disasters. Here on the Peninsula, we are subject to power outages, earthquakes, fires, floods, severe storms, extreme heat, gas leaks, plane crashes, disease and/or flu pandemics, and a host of other possible situations. The potential for an act of terror adds yet another dimension to disaster awareness and preparedness. Location: Cañada College, Building 6, rooms 101/102, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City (parking recommended in Lot 6) Date: May 17, 2015 Session 1: 3:30-5:30pm Session 2: 6:30-8:30pm Free! Register online at Redwood City Park and Recreation. RSVP to cert@redwoodcity.org, enter “Are you Ready?” in your subject line and note Session 1 or Session 2.
