A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN/WINTER COLLECTION MAGAZINE FROM SANDERSON YOUNG. TO OUR MANY REGULAR READERS, I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THIS BI-ANNUAL MAGAZINE WITH A SERIES OF GOOD NEWS BULLETINS REFLECTING THE MORE POSITIVE ACTIONS AND SUCCESS STORIES WITHIN THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND.

I AM JUSTIFIABLY VERY PROUD OF THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND. 08

Collection

The first good news is that Collection magazine has increased its print run by nearly 50% and I am delighted to say that we are now circulating 32,000 copies of this prestigious magazine throughout the region. The majority of these magazines are being distributed individually to AB households and therefore directly into the comfort of peoples’ homes, so that they can review the housing market and positive news stories throughout the area. If you are reading this magazine for the first time I very much hope you enjoy its insight into the property world. I would firstly like to reflect upon the fabulous success of the British Masters Golf, which was held at Close House Golf Club near Newcastle. Attracting over 68,000 visitors, it was the most successfully supported British Masters Golf tournament ever. I thank the owner of Close House, Graham Wylie, and his magnificent team for the commitment they made to ensure this event was brought to the region and the tremendous enjoyment that so many golfers throughout the country had in watching this spectacular event. Turning now to housing, in October the house price index information provided by Rightmove saw a rebound in house price increases of 2.8%, equating to just under £7,000. Following 2 months in August and September when prices had dropped, we now return to price increases representing the 8th month of increases out of the last 10. The average asking price of houses in the country is just over £252,000 but this is greatly influenced by the South and London markets. Here in the North, I am delighted to report that we provide the best value for money in the whole of the country, with an average asking price of £145,000. This, combined with the magnificent beauty of the countryside, the Cheviot Hills, the fabulous lakes, as well as the ease of access to the coastline and its stunning beaches, creates such great value for money and quality of life for those that live here. Recent statistics also indicate great news for the region in respect of unemployment, with the North East defying the national trend in recent months and providing further reductions in unemployment throughout the region. The region’s unemployment from the same time last year (September 2016/ September 2017) has reduced by nearly 2% and the further good news was that we had 52,000 more people in work over the last year, which means a total of 1.2 million now employed within the region. So, what do we have to look forward to in the future? Firstly, the ongoing redevelopment of the former Newcastle brewery site in the heart of the city is progressing very well, with Newcastle Science Central providing one of the biggest urban regeneration projects of its kind in the UK on the huge 24 acre site. Creating over 4,000 jobs and 500,000 sq. ft. of office space, as well as 450 new homes, this is, undoubtedly, changing the face of the west end of Newcastle and the area close to St James’ Park. In the summer of 2017, Gateshead Council were delighted to unveil a £200 million redevelopment of the Gateshead Quay, close to the Sage Gateshead. The huge arts and leisure complex planned for the banks of the river hopes to be completed towards 2021 and will include a 12,500 seat concert hall, conference centre and hotel. The complex hopes to create 500 jobs and a huge boost to the North East economy of about £30 million per year. This will be a very welcome vision on the south banks of the River Tyne. 2018 also brings the Great Exhibition of the North which will be the largest event in England in 2018, providing a game changing moment for the North. The exhibition will reveal to the world how the North of England’s great art and culture, design and innovation has shaped all of our lives and is building the economy of tomorrow. It will be an amazing show case for the North East’s heritage as well as its future and more information is available at www.getnorth2018.com

DUNCAN G YOUNG Managing Director - Sanderson Young duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk

Our universities in the North continue to innovate and direct success, with Northumbria University climbing to 48th place in the Guardian university league table for 2018. This is its highest ever position and the university is rightfully very proud of the fact that it is ranked the top university in the UK for start-up businesses based on turnover. Newcastle University also continues its vision through to 2021 to be a world class research intensive university, to deliver teaching and facilitate learning of the highest quality and to play a leading role in the economic, social and cultural development in the North East of England. Our medicine also continues to shine from the region. The Newcastle NHS Trust holds regional, national and international success standards, especially highlighting its institute of transplantation in the Freeman Hospital and the Great North Children’s Hospital, both of which are world renowned. These important results for the North East are also strengthened by the success of some of our leading top 200 companies. It is especially pleasing to see the local companies grown in the North East, such as Barbour and Nissan, performing so well and providing such great places to work for their proud employees. Psychologists tell us that we prefer to read and watch bad news rather than good news, but I was determined to make this introduction a far more upbeat and proud reflection of the current position within the North of England. It seems completely pointless and futile to talk about the ‘Br….’ word, since there are more questions than there are answers. Simply, we must move on and continue to live and trade in the existing climate. Therefore, it comes down to peoples’ personal beliefs, their own confidence and vision of what they can create and what part they can play in the future of their successful employment, their turnover, their creativity and their contribution within the region. I am justifiably very proud of the North East of England. Having been born and bred in Northumberland and lived most of my life in Newcastle, I can see many reasons why we provide such quality of life and a greater place to live. We have been through many turbulent times in the past and suffered knock backs before, but for the moment, I am happy to say that we are selling a diverse range of quality houses at very reasonable prices and confidence remains strong in certain segments of the market. We are very much here as a team to help you move home in the near future. Whether you are selling or letting, my colleagues at Sanderson Young look forward to helping you. Please do not hesitate to let me know if we can assist in any way.

WE ASK SANDERSON YOUNG’S JANET HOPKINSON & NICOLA OSBORNE TO COMMENT ON KEY TRENDS IN THE CURRENT NORTH EAST PROPERTY MARKET…

WHAT’S WRONG WITH A LITTLE OLD FASHIONED ESTATE AGENCY?

JANET HOPKINSON

Operations Director

T: 0191 223 3500 janet.hopkinson@ sandersonyoung.co.uk

“I don’t want to register with you – I look on the websites”. A phrase heard far too often in our industry. The idea that a buyer has the whole market at their fingertips can be true, however we find it is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the art of estate agency. According to research, over 50% of people don’t buy the property that they originally set out to purchase, or decide on areas they had not previously considered, indeed even knew about. We simply can’t be lazy and expect a website to do the work for us. Our property experts strive to be proactive, understand the bespoke requirements of each buyer, and match people to property. We are extremely passionate, and nothing beats that feeling when a buyer views a house, looks joyfully at you and utters those magic words – “I’ve been looking for ages, but YOU have found me the perfect home”. We also have many sellers who don’t want to have their home listed online and don’t wish to be inundated with people who the property doesn’t suit. After all – they’re paying us for convenience, expertise and, overall, service. Going back to old fashioned estate agency, something I have been an advocate of for over 45 years, your professional agent should have the knowledge of areas, current stock and transaction history and should be having the right conversations with buyers to meet their demands. And if a client’s dream home isn’t on the market? Simple - we source it.

“FORTUNE FAVOURS THE PREPARED MIND”. LOUIS PASTEUR

HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS CHATS TO MARK THOMPSON, MANAGING PARTNER OF RYDER ARCHITECTURE, EXPLORING HIS PASSION FOR OUR REGION AND THE MANY NORTH EAST ORGANISATIONS WHICH HE CONTRIBUTES TO. Spanning across both UK and international offices, Ryder Architecture is a company passionate about improving the richness of people’s lives through the buildings they create - “civic projects such as Newcastle Central Station have been most rewarding as the improvements impact on so many people from all walks of life”. Mark explains that when himself and senior partner Peter Buchan took Ryder on and were writing their first plan, they came across a Louis Pasteur quote which would epitomise their focus - “fortune favours the prepared mind”. “For Ryder, it’s been about planning a medium term destination – eg new sectors, or locations – but then being open minded as to the route we take rather than rigidly sticking to a pre defined course. Over the years we’ve enjoyed a number of collaborations and joint ventures, each being a stepping stone. Apart from London, where clients were the pull rather than an existing project, all the other locations (Glasgow, Liverpool, Hong Kong and Vancouver) have been opportunistic coincidences where we’ve had a project opportunity and someone keen to relocate. Our teams in Newcastle are now also working on projects in

16

Melbourne, Singapore and Malaysia and are awaiting news on another major project on the sub continent.” Ryder’s evolution has been one of client interaction and staff development. “We’ve never pursued growth - instead we’ve focused on developing and improving the quality of our people, our service and our design. We’ve entered the Sunday Times Best Places to Work since 2007 and featured since 2011. It was hugely rewarding to be ranked 10 in the 2017 list and I would love to see more northern businesses enter.” First becoming involved with Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI) during the 2008 City of Culture bid, Mark is still on the board as NGI prepare for next summer’s Great Exhibition of the North which aims to bring an extra 1.5 million visitors to the region and will tell the dynamic story of how our innovators, designers and artists shaped our present and are inspiring the future. Invest Newcastle, the inward investment team at NGI, are doing a fantastic job in promoting Newcastle city region. International law firm Norton Rose Fulbright are the latest to commit, bringing their first UK innovation centre and creating up to 200 jobs, following in the footsteps of DRS and Agribusiness Academy amongst others. “One of the good things to come out of the recession is a real willingness of businesses to collaborate for the greater good of

the region. We have a number of examples in the property and construction industry from skills and training to the international property conference in Cannes where over 20 local companies collaborate with Invest Newcastle to celebrate and promote the fantastic opportunities the region has to offer.” Regional employment goals play a large part of Mark’s North East Local Enterprise Partnership role. “Last year I was invited to apply for a position on the board of the NELEP. I believe I was selected for my property/construction background and as someone who understands SMEs and the challenges we face in scaling up - a major initiative for NELEP is to help create 100,000 more jobs by 2024, a significant proportion will come from growing businesses rather than inward investment.” Contributing to numerous boards, charity support is also at the forefront of Mark’s mind. “There are many great charitable causes in our region. On a personal level, I chair Bright Red, a small and very successful charity dedicated to supporting patient care and research into blood cancers. Another cause worthy of note is that of former Newcastle Falcons player Doddie Weir. Established following Doddie’s tragic diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease earlier this year, Doddie Weir’s Trust will fund research into MND and provide support for Doddie and his family.” Referencing the pending period of economic uncertainty which Brexit brings, “On eventually emerging from the last recession I vowed never to worry about things out of my control, but to do all I could to make Ryder as resilient as possible to any economic circumstances whilst recognising we’ll never be immune. The arrogance demonstrated by Cameron and Osborne in pandering to the party rather than demonstrating strong leadership, and then the Conservatives and Labour alike during a pathetic and

GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH

disjointed Remain campaign was frightening, only to be surpassed by May’s ignorance when going for a snap election this year. In that context, how can anyone comment with any certainty on what Brexit will bring?” Despite the Brexit uncertainty Mark believes the region is definitely on the up with new and established businesses across a variety of sectors doing amazing things across the UK and beyond. “The greatest opportunity is devolution to a mayoral authority which will have autonomy and responsibility for our own economic future and the freedom to compete with the same ambition and leadership other devolved authorities in Manchester and Liverpool have demonstrated. Politicians and businesses alike need to engage with communities to ensure a strong ambitious mayor is elected, placing the economic agenda at the fore, the success of which will in turn provide funds to improve the lives of the vulnerable”. And, when it comes to general downtime, “I enjoy fair weather cycling and skiing, watching rugby and socialising with a great group of friends. For pure relaxation, a long weekend in Fornalutx (Mallorca’s best kept secret) is the perfect tonic.”

TOMBOLA CAMPUS

“ONE OF THE GOOD THINGS TO COME OUT OF THE RECESSION IS A REAL WILLINGNESS OF BUSINESSES TO COLLABORATE FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF THE REGION.

WHY THE RULES AROUND FOREIGN ASSETS AFTER DEATH CAN BE COMPLEX

Many of our clients now own foreign assets, particularly foreign property abroad. The rules of the country in which these assets are held can override the rules in England and Wales regarding who they pass to and in what proportions. In some jurisdictions, these succession rules can even affect the appointment of executors. A Will made in England and Wales may not apply at all to foreign property. The “forced heirship” type laws that can instead apply are known as the “rules of succession”. Since 17 August 2015, the EU Succession Regulation has enabled clients to include a declaration in their Will that the laws of their nationality should apply to their assets. This means that a UK national can choose to have one UK Will dealing with all their European assets and this will override any forced heirship rules which exist in the countries where their foreign assets are held and which would otherwise dictate who could inherit. However, despite this legislation, we still recommend that our clients obtain advice in the foreign jurisdiction where they own property; it may still be preferable to have a separate foreign Will to facilitate a smoother and quicker foreign estate administration. If no such election exists, we need to look at the type of asset to understand how it will be treated for succession planning purposes. Immovable assets such as property and land will be treated under the laws of succession in the country where the property is situated. However, a moveable asset such as a bank account will be treated under the succession laws of the country in which the deceased was “domiciled”. We often have to discuss the issues of domicile and residence with our clients which can

SO, IN THE WORDS OF THE ROLLING STONES, “YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT”. THIS IS TRUE WHEN IT COMES TO HOW A FOREIGN JURISDICTION’S RULES REGARDING SUCCESSION AND TAXATION WILL APPLY TO ASSETS ABROAD. change over time. These issues can have an impact on clients’ tax liability and we work with their accountant and other advisers to ensure that our clients are fully informed of their status for tax purposes. In the tax year which saw HMRC gather an all-time high, of almost £5 billion in IHT, it is very important that owners of property abroad understand where and how their foreign assets will be taxed. If a deceased person was domiciled in the UK at their date of death, their Worldwide estate would be subject to IHT. If an individual was not domiciled in the UK at their date of death, IHT would be payable on UK assets alone. The rate of tax payable on death can vary depending upon who you are deemed to leave assets to under a country’s succession rules and a form of Capital Gains Tax may also be payable on death in certain jurisdictions. There are Double Taxation treaties which may prevent assets being taxed twice in different jurisdictions. So, in the words of the Rolling Stones, “you can’t always get what you want”. This is true when it comes to how a foreign jurisdiction’s rules regarding succession and taxation will apply to assets abroad. However, you can prepare and plan for what will happen to these assets in order to ease the process for your loved ones when the time comes. At Hay & Kilner, we assist our clients in obtaining foreign advice and ensure that our clients understand the need for advice in other jurisdictions.

HARLEA LODGE GOSFORTH

Ever since people started building houses, homeowners have had to answer one fundamental question: is it better to live in the town or the country? On the one hand, the town offers easy access to all the amenities and opportunities that are essential to a prosperous life; on the other, the countryside offers an escape from the rat race. Once upon a time, there was no solution to this conundrum but now all that’s best about urban and rural lifestyles have been combined in the extraordinary Harlea Lodge. To begin with, this magnificent modern mansion is situated on The Grove, one of Gosforth’s most sought after residential avenues, and this enviable location means the immediate area’s prestigious schools, shops and leisure facilities are all within walking distance. Similarly, any daily commute to Newcastle city centre is measured in minutes rather than hours but, whilst this fabulous family home enjoys all the conveniences that make urban living so attractive, drive through the electric hardwood gates and you’ll believe you’ve been transported into the heart of England’s glorious countryside. The manicured lawns, neatly clipped hedges, hard tennis court, water feature, sun terrace and imposing carriage circle are just what you would expect to find in a grand country house. Equally the mature trees and stone walls that surround the property offer levels of peace and privacy rarely found in an urban setting, yet this is just the first of Harlea Lodge’s many surprises. The red bricks, russet roof tiles and double bays of the property’s front elevation are typically Edwardian but this house is no museum piece trapped in the aspic of the past. In fact, Harlea Lodge has been completely remodelled and extended by the current owners to create a unique, contemporary-styled home that blends the latest décor and innovative room layouts >>

<< with the property’s original architecture. Moreover, this hugely successful combination of traditional elegance and stateof-the-art luxury is apparent from the moment you step inside the front door. The grand, double height, entrance hall features a handmade staircase by Clifford Chapman, and the sinuous design of the balustrade echoes the Art Nouveau style of the 1920s, however the pristine white walls and tiled floor couldn’t be more in keeping with current tastes. This intriguing juxtaposition is repeated in the principal reception room where such period features as the original decorative plaster work and open fireplace are accentuated by the striking, modern décor. The signature minimalist design is continued throughout the ground floor and into the dining room which boasts full height French windows opening onto the sun terrace. This feature is reminiscent of the garden rooms and conservatories found in historic stately homes yet this ingenious space offers much more than a place to enjoy memorable dinner parties. The dining room’s secondary function is to link the two distinctive parts of the property because, in addition to the main house, Harlea Lodge boasts an annex attached to the integral double garage. With its spiral staircase connecting the large, family room (and separate shower room) on the lower storey with the second sitting room and a studio-style bedroom on the upper floor, the annexe has the feel of a chic Manhattan duplex apartment. Currently, the ground floor room is used as a cinema and ‘snug’ however this highly versatile space could serve equally well as separate accommodation for older teenagers, members of an extended family or even live-in domestic staff. Such versatility means that this tremendous property is perfectly suited to today’s complex lifestyles but that’s not all. As more and more of us require a home office to ensure our professional lives are as successful as our domestic ones, the main house is equipped with not one but two studies. With its built-in desk and suite of fitted cabinets, the larger of these rooms is ideally suited to those with demanding careers whilst the smaller ‘studio space’ is especially conducive to creative pursuits. The theme of form following function continues upstairs, with all of the bedrooms featuring either en suite facilities and/or a separate dressing room. As before, the styling on the upper floor of the main house couldn’t be more contemporary, or more,

opulent, but the outstanding attention to detail ensures that every bedroom is the perfect place to relax and recharge the batteries at the end of a hectic day. So, in conclusion, if you’re looking for a truly outstanding property, set in its own beautiful gardens, that offers both the convenience of the town and the tranquility of the countryside look no further than Harlea Lodge.

DRINK IN THE PINK THAT IS SWEEPING ACROSS FASHION LOOK BOOKS THIS AUTUMN AND WINTER, REPORTS STYLE WRITER HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS.

ADD A POP OF HOT PINK TO SARTORIAL PROCEEDINGS, INJECTING VERSATILE STATEMENT STYLE VIA SIGNATURE PIECES…

With chic shades ranging from blush to magenta, neon and fuchsia, there are multiple seasonal options to choose between. Add a pop of hot pink to sartorial proceedings, injecting versatile statement style via signature pieces such as outerwear, lounging clothes and party season essentials. Alternatively, snap up understated accessories, depending on the fashion credentials you seek. Whether you wish to embrace a fully pink fashion look or simply insert a subtle touch of shading, designer collections and high street department stores are set to be awash with both soft and brighter tones. Different textures, fabric and prints project alternative fashion focuses, encompassing your work wardrobe, weekend styling and occasion wear. Hush remains a firm lifestyle blogger favourite, maintaining a strong social media buzz when new season collections drop. Snuggle up in their Big Love Jumper (£130), worn with Marina Metallic Skirt (£65). Slogan tops have risen in popularity amongst fashionistas, becoming a staple item for many. Simple to build upon, dress up or remain low-key, shimmery skirts certainly add an extra style edge. Metallics act as an exhilarating neutral base, equalling amazing outfits. The dusky-coloured hooded Atalana Tunic (£55) conjures up images of loungewear from a luxe viewpoint. Placed alongside said stylish sportswear items, Hush’s Leather Leggings in Burgundy (£345) introduce a definite elegance. After all, no-one said pink outfits had to be candy coloured. LEATHER LEGGINGS ARE ALSO AN EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVE TO TIGHTS, WHEN PUTTING TOGETHER A DRESS AND BOOTS DURING THOSE COLDER MONTHS.

<< excellent alternative to tights, when putting together a dress and boots during those colder months. Dip your toe into the tonal trend, layering up with a bold basic, such as their Albani Cami Top (£45). Worn under grey knitwear, pink needn’t overpower so much as when seen as a standalone piece. Choose key colours to complement each other, playing down the impact of bright shades. For a more formal occasion, Fenn Wright Manson offer party season fashion aplenty. Throw their timeless Rose Coat (£249) over a sequinned dress or trouser and top ensemble come Christmastime. Equally the soft knit Grace Jumper (£89) works well tucked in to a patterned skirt as eveningwear. When desiring just a dash of colour, look to print pieces. Fenn Wright Manson’s Celine Skirt (£109) features black, white and pink components, ensuring an intuitive eye for this season’s style. Add a roll-neck and heeled pumps during chilly days, nailing autumnal glamour. This season’s Ted Baker designs tap into head-to-toe blush, spanning from crushed velvet accessories right through to soft pink trainers. Smart flats retain their casual style crown, for those who favour a tailored trouser complete with classic cool twist.

Ted Baker’s leather and wool mix Naysie jacket (£235) offers the ideal accompaniment, ensuring a flattering fit for all. With a single button fastening, the coat can hang loose or be worn closed, creating a modern outline. Boasting stunning leather sleeve detail, this contrast of material and textures emphasizes a winter wonder worth investigating. Finally, the Hobbs Lillian Coat (£289) and Lillian Trouser (£110) are a formidable duo, particularly when worn together. Further highlighting the importance of a well turned-out flat, the brand’s footwear suggestion is their gorgeous white Abbie Trainer (£85). An uncomplicated and effortless approach, the Adaline Sweat (£149) earns multiple style points too. Factor in a stiletto heel and take this outfit from desk side to Christmas do. Envisage key pieces, which will really make a difference to your wardrobe. Invest in strong print, and pair with simple garments such as fine knit tops or polo necks. Research coats that will best suit your lifestyle and those all-important favourite winter warmers. Combine hot pink with softer blush, playing around with the palette in question. Try not to shy away from colour completely, and if pink really does overwhelm, find a fabulous accessory to do the talking for you. Either way, have fun with this season’s wish-list, ticking off assorted pink tones as you go.

ONKAR DHANOYA IS THE CLINICAL LEAD AT THE HONOUR HEALTH GROUP, WHICH PROVIDES DENTAL CARE AND SKIN TREATMENTS AT THREE PRACTICES ACROSS THE NORTH EAST. Onkar sits on the board of the Faculty of General Dental Practice and holds a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (London). The group was previously named The Osborne Dental Group. We spoke to Onkar about his reasons for rebranding, and his exciting plans for Honour Health. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR CAREER: I graduated as a dental surgeon from Newcastle Dental School at Newcastle University in 1985 and took over my first dental practice in Stanley in 1986, so I’ve been looking after the dental health and wellbeing of patients for more than 30 years now. I also opened two further practices – at Osborne Road in Jesmond, and at Bell Villas in Ponteland during those three decades. Time has flown! I’m very proud that the The Honour Health Group (formerly named The Osborne Dental Group) has grown into the award-winning set of practices it is today. We’ve treated generations of families throughout the North East and it’s very rewarding for us to have become a renowned, trusted name in the local community. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO REBRAND FROM THE OSBORNE DENTAL GROUP TO THE HONOUR HEALTH GROUP? In the past 30 years, we have learnt so much about how we can help patients to improve their health. We now know that there are bilateral links between dental disease and conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke and Alzheimer’s. Because of this, we believe that dental health should not be separated from general health, and this belief underpins the way we look after our patients. That’s why we decided to rebrand as Honour Health. We believe the name better represents the services we provide and the ideology we follow. Our new strapline is ‘Smile more. Live life’. This sums up how we want our patients to feel when they walk through our doors.

The message that we really want to get across is that, although we have a new look, we’re still the same great team. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR HONOUR HEALTH? Prevention of dental disease is at the heart of our practices, so we’re putting our comprehensive Dental Health Assessment at the very heart of the care we provide. If you join us as a patient, we’ll tailor a special health report for you after your assessment, which outlines how we can work with you to improve not just your dental health, but your general health and wellbeing. We’ll continue to provide NHS care (at Jesmond and Stanley), as well as our renowned range of private treatments including dental implants, orthodontics, teeth whitening, veneers, dentures and crowns. We’re also putting much more focus on our skin department, Honour Health Skin. We have been providing non-surgical skin treatments for over a decade now, as we know that how patients feel about the way they look has a huge effect on their wellbeing. If your skin looks good, your confidence improves. With this in mind, we’re expanding our clinics and our choice of treatments, and we’re offering plasma facials, laser hair removal, muscle relaxants, fillers, bespoke skincare advice, skin peels, cosmeceutical products, e-dermastamp, and much more. Lastly, we’re introducing the Honour Health Club to provide exclusive benefits to our members, including worldwide insurance and up to 20% off private treatments. Watch this space!

TIGNES Close proximity to the Grande Motte Glacier means this Alpine village can offer skiing and a host of other snow-related activities all year round. Experienced snowboarders can test their skills on the 190m long, 7m high, half-pipe, which was used to train the French and Canadian Winter Olympic teams, whilst beginners and intermediates have access to four ‘family fun parks’ offering blue and green level tables. For those seeking more orthodox fun in the snow, Tignes offers traditional skiers 300km of slopes, with 78 lifts servicing 153 runs and recent improvements include the removal of hundreds of pylons as well as the remodelling of the Val Claret novice area. As you’d expect from a former Winter Olympics venue, there’s a wide choice of alternative sporting attractions at the Tignespace indoor pool and sports complex. Here you can learn to drive a rally car on ice, climb a frozen waterfall or try your hand at Bun-J which combines the thrills of bungee jumping and zip lining with a ski jump! MAYRHOFEN

SAAS-FEE Those of us who remember Wham’s 1984 smash hit Last Christmas may recognise Saas-Fee as it appears in the accompanying video. This small but charming village in the heart of the Swiss Valais was also used for the skichase scenes in the 1969 Bond film On her Majesty’s Secret Service but it’s the uber-reliable snow and picturesque, car-free streets that attract today’s fans of winter sports. This resort is particularly popular with families, who flock to Saas-Fees’ forgiving slopes to enjoy the spectacular views as much as the easy skiing but, whilst there’s little to attract off-piste adrenalin-junkies, more experienced skiers still have 50km of intermediate and advanced runs to explore. As one of the Alps’ first summertime snow parks was built in this high-altitude resort, Saas-Fee is also popular with snowboarders and many manufacturers test their new products here. As a result, even though the summer park shuts in the winter, snowboarders will find themselves welcome on the resorts’ hugely enjoyable blue, red and black runs. More information: www.saas-fee.ch/en

Situated in the heart of the Tyrol’s Zillertal, a valley that’s simply stuffed with superb skiing, the little village of Mayrhofen has been popular with Brits for decades and in recent years it’s become one of those rare resorts with plenty to satisfy both skiers and snowboarders. Devotees of straight-skis will love the traditional Tyrolian chalets, luxurious spas and upmarket restaurants whilst the baggy pants brigade will find plenty of bars pulsating to the sound of European techno-pop. Incidentally, fans of such music shouldn’t miss the week-long Snowbombing festival which is held every April. Back on the slopes, the 3,250m Hintertux glacier provides year-round snow but most of Mayrhofen’s 136km of runs, served by 57 lifts, are spread across the lower slopes of the Penken and Ahorn mountains. The majority of these runs are graded red or blue, so they’re ideal for intermediates, but there are some excellent nursery slopes on the Ahorn and serious thrill-seekers can try the heart-stopping Harakiri, which is Austria’s steepest descent on skis. LIVIGNO

PAS DE LA CASA Duty-free status and a location sandwiched between France and Spain means tiny Andorra is very popular with weekend skiers from both sides of the Pyrenees. As a result, the bustling resort of Pas de la Casa, situated close to the French border, has a reputation for wild nightlife so, if your idea of great après-ski is a mug of cocoa and good book, take the Envalira Tunnel to the more genteel Grau Roig mini-resort on the other side of the ridge. Happily, from either location, a series of lifts takes confident skiers into the Grandvalira, which is the largest ski and snowboard network in the Pyrénées, and whilst there’s a prevalence of red and black runs here, novices will find some excellent nursery slopes a short bus ride from Pas de la Casa. Besides the Grandvalira’s 210km of advanced and intermediate pistes, snowboarders of all abilities will also enjoy the area’s three terrain parks, half pipe, two boardercross tracks and lively bar scene which aficionados regard as an essential part of any winter holiday! During the summer this attractive, duty-free resort on the Italo-Swiss Border hosts a famous chess championship but, when the snow falls, knights and rooks are replaced by skiers and snowboarders. Again this is a resort aimed at families and/or those with intermediate abilities so don’t expect precipitous black diamond runs and an eardrum puncturing nightlife. On the upside, the traditional nature of this secluded resort means that prices tend to be much more affordable than in some of the more famous suresnow Alpine locations and the streets are usually free of party-goers in advanced stages of inebriation. Equally, the comparatively low cost of living here means Livigno is becoming increasingly popular with beginner and intermediate snowboarders looking for wide motorway runs, good boardercross, well-maintained snow parks and an absence of the fur coat fraternity. The main terrain park, situated on the Mottolino, is packed with some awe-inspiring wedges whilst the Carosello is better suited to intermediates and the San Rocco’s easier jumps and small boxes are ideal for beginners. Unsurprisingly, the menu is filled with a huge range of seafood, from namesake crab and lobster dishes, to prawns, curried cod, Lindisfarne oysters, scallops and sea trout to name a few. Aside from delicacies of the sea, cheese soufflé, herb crusted lamb, venison, sirloin steak, wild mushroom risotto and pasta dishes ensure that there’s something for everyone. If your sweet tooth is tingling, the ‘Crab’s’ Bocker Glory, Belgian chocolate cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding are all firm favourites with ‘A Plate of all Desserts in Miniature’ being truly special. Wonders of the world, collected both locally and internationally, adorn every inch of the place and each has its own story to tell. What makes Crab Manor so special is that each of the 20 rooms are uniquely decorated with artefacts and antiques of a certain theme. AS THE POPULATION OF ENGLAND AND WALES IS LIVING LONGER WITH THE RESULTANT INCREASE IN DIAGNOSES OF DEMENTIA, IT IS AN IMPORTANT TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE COURT OF PROTECTION’S ROLE AND THE VARIOUS COURT ORDERS AFFECTING ADULTS WITH A MENTAL INCAPACITY.

The Court of Protection issues a variety of orders including Deputyship Orders and Statutory Wills. These types of Orders are the most important legal instruments required for anyone diagnosed with mental incapability, as these Orders provide their representative with the authority to make important legal decisions on their behalf. A representative can be anyone; a close family member, friend, solicitor, member of the social care team. The representative must apply to the Court of Protection to make an order which will allow them to be named as a ‘deputy’.

WHEN IS AN ORDER FROM THE COURT OF PROTECTION REQUIRED?

Orders are required in circumstances where no one has legal authority to act on behalf of the patient (where there is no Power of Attorney) and a legal decision needs to be made on behalf of the patient. A Deputyship Order is most commonly used to deal with someone’s finances and can, amongst other things, permit the deputy access to the patient’s bank accounts (in order to pay bills) and permit the sale of the patient’s house. A specific Deputyship Order can also be used to make welfare decisions, however, the Court of Protection are often reluctant to appoint welfare deputies.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR APPLYING FOR A DEPUTYSHIP ORDER?

The proposed deputy must: • Demonstrate that they would not be directly benefiting from assuming control of the finances of the patient. • Complete a number of forms detailing the patient’s finances. • Provide details of their own financial circumstances and a witness statement stating why the Deputyship Order is required. • Obtain a capacity assessment report from a medical practitioner who must confirm that the patient is unable to make decisions on their own. • Notify potentially interested parties.

LOUISE MILLER,

HEAD OF WILLS AND PROBATE, MINCOFFS SOLICITORS

Once the application is submitted, the Court of Protection dictates the timescales within which any potentially interested parties can object. Subject to any successful objections, the Court of Protection will issue an order stating the terms under which the deputy may act and detailing any restrictions. This procedure can take many months to complete. The length and process involved can be extremely problematic for the patient and the proposed deputy.

WHAT IF A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY IS IN PLACE?

Good news! If the patient made a Lasting Power of Attorney, whilst they had mental capacity, their attorneys will have power to act on their behalf in most legal decisions.

WHAT NEXT?

It is therefore crucial to ensure you make a Lasting Power of Attorney to ensure that someone is appointed to make decisions on your behalf should you lose the capacity to be able to do so in the future. However, if there ever is a time when a Court of Protection order is required then it is a good idea to seek the advice of a legal professional who can help navigate the web of forms and requirements needed to meet the specifications of a successful application.

DESPITE MUCH MEDIA REPORTING AND SIGNIFICANT CHANGES FACING THE RESIDENTIAL LETTINGS MARKET, SANDERSON YOUNG’S REGIONAL LETTINGS MANAGER, GAIL MCLEAN, HAS BEEN EXTREMELY ENCOURAGED BY LEVELS OF DEMAND, AND A PARTICULAR DEMOGRAPHIC.

“WE ARE DEFINITELY FINDING AN EMERGENT TREND IN THE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL MARKETPLACE PROFESSIONAL SHARERS” 104

Collection

“We are definitely finding an emergent trend in the young professional marketplace - professional sharers”, comments Gail. This pattern, where friends or colleagues take up a rental on, most commonly, a two bedroom apartment in the city centre or inner suburbs, is more akin to the London market – with the rental figures to match. “For the fifth consecutive year, our standard rental figures are the same as the London average, which is astonishing”, comments Gail. However, it is supply and demand causing this, rather than regional average rental yields. “The fantastic thing about professional sharers as tenants, is that due to the high demand from this profile of tenant, as well as the fact they have an extra buffer on how much they can spend, we are finding that rental yields for our landlords has increased”. As well as a higher income stream, landlords are also benefitting from fewer void periods. “We have had great success in holding on to these tenants, often due to them sourcing new housemates to take over a spare room should their friends move out”. Gail has advised many of her current landlords looking to enhance their portfolios to look at purchasing a property which lends itself to this market, in the right location and with two double bedrooms with en-suites. Another of Gail’s top tips when searching for a suitable rental property is what she calls “future-proofing”. The minimum energy efficiency standards which come into force in April 2018 will undoubtedly have an impact on the ability to rent many homes,

particularly older properties or those with outdated heating systems or lack of insulation. “Many of our landlords used to snap up pairs of Tyneside flats, or older terraced properties, largely due to the fact they were popular with tenants and in areas of good capital growth. However I have more recently been advising my clients to look towards the new build market and consider energy efficiency and sustainability”, comments Gail. “We had fantastic success at La Sagesse, Jesmond, where I had tenants lined up for our landlords even before they had completed so there was a very quick turnaround to occupation and, of course, generating income”. Eco-homes, such as The Rise in Scotswood, have also proven extremely popular and will serve landlords well in the future with less need for repairs and maintenance. “My landlords are very conscious of their bottom line, particularly after the more recent tax implications imposed on them, and new build homes give extra assurance that they won’t need to carry out large scale works thus protecting their net income.” There is, of course, still a high demand for older properties, Gail comments - “Some of the highest value homes in the region are older properties and therefore it is important to protect the potential revenue offered by the rental market. I am very happy to advise on how potential or current landlords can improve the energy rating of their properties and have links with specialists to advise on sustainability and the government-backed ‘green deals’ available”.

“SOME OF THE HIGHEST VALUE HOMES IN THE REGION ARE OLDER PROPERTIES AND THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROTECT THE POTENTIAL REVENUE OFFERED BY THE RENTAL MARKET.

LOOKING BACK ON THE FLAGSHIP REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS THE TEAM AT SANDERSON YOUNG HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN, WE HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN SHAPING THE LANDSCAPE OF THE NORTH EAST. Some of the most iconic housing schemes over the last 15 years have been handled by our new homes experts, who have assisted on land acquisition and appraisals, through to the sale and marketing of each individual property on site. However, this work takes time. To quote Heywood, Rome – or in this case the North East – wasn’t built in a day. Many of the developments we have been involved in can take 5, 10, even 15 years from inception to completion. Smith’s Dock, UrbanSplash and Places For People’s joint venture on the iconic former dockland of North Shields, has been many years in the making, and it is thrilling to be on site today where the first completions of House are taking place. Many developments we have been working on for some years are due for release in 2018, and we will certainly hit the ground running in the New Year with both off-site and on-site launches, which is extremely exciting. Working with large and small scale developers, we are here to advise as early as possible as to the feasibility of a scheme and the market that should be targeted. Our unrivalled expertise in this area, as well as access to real sales data, provides invaluable support to housebuilders throughout the region. New build homes offer a fantastic flexibility for a purchaser, with the ability to select from a range of styles, bespoke interiors and a particular plot. Energy efficiency has been a great advantage, particularly the use of reusable energy. Hexham Gate, a collection of detached homes designed by Trivselhus by Esh located in the Tyne Valley, has brought a surprising mix of buyer profiles, however all buyers have been largely driven to purchase by the eco-friendly construction. New build homes, at one point largely concentrated in the inner suburbs, have found their rightful place in many of Northumberland’s rural villages, and towards 2018 we will assist

on the launch of sensational luxury developments in Lesbury and Warkworth for Lindisfarne Homes, following unprecedented sales success this year at the stunning Beadnell Point development on the Northumberland coast. If you think new homes can be boxy and, dare we say it, boring, then the architect designed schemes we have been working on will certainly beg to differ. Hallgarth Mews, a unique development of 15 stylish townhouses in Winlaton, has outperformed the local market by providing stylish, traditional design with use of high quality materials and interior finishes. The use of stone has been very popular both at Brunton Square, where Countylife have created a truly stunning range of executive homes with record values being achieved, as well as at Stamford Lea in the idyllic Northumbrian village of Rennington. Here, All Saints Living have produced a striking range of dormer bungalows which blend seamlessly with the impressive landscape. Although a new home can take time to purchase, as much as it takes time to develop and build, if something is worth having, it is worth waiting for. This is very much our ethos at Sanderson Young. We strive to work with developers to bring exciting, sought after housing schemes to the market and provide the region with the highest quality of new housing available. If you are a developer in need of advice on how to maximise opportunities, or indeed a purchaser considering a new build home of any budget, please do not hesitate to contact our new homes team.

NEIL GORDON TAKES A LOOK AT SOME RECENT TRANSFORMATIONS OF RESIDENTIAL CATERPILLARS INTO GORGEOUS ARCHITECTURAL BUTTERFLIES…

DESPITE BEING CONSTRUCTED OF BRICK, STONE AND OTHER INANIMATE MATERIALS, HOUSES HAVE TO EVOLVE. SHIFTS IN ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES, CHANGES IN DEMOGRAPHICS AND NUMEROUS OTHER FACTORS CAN ALL ALTER AN AREA’S CHARACTER SO ITS BUILDINGS MUST ADAPT OR DIE.

THE RESULT IS A BREATHTAKING EXAMPLE OF WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH AN OLD HOUSE IF ARCHITECTURAL CREATIVITY IS GIVEN FREE REIN BUT…

Collection

Take a former coach house on the outskirts of Newcastle for example. Once upon a time, this purely functional building was meant to accommodate horses and their grooms but the advent of the motorcar made its original purpose redundant and it was converted into a family home sometime after WWII. Fast forward to 2015 when the owner successfully transformed this erstwhile Cinderella property into an architectural belle of the ball. The rear gable has been replaced by a dramatic glazed wall that, despite its modernity, echoes the Gothic architecture of England’s great cathedrals. Similarly, the former stables and other moribund areas have been transformed into achingly beautiful spaces by sweeping away the modifications of earlier ages, including a cramped 1980s conservatory, and installing more glazing, including the latest folding doors that span the full width of the original structure. The result is a breathtaking example of what can be done with an old house if architectural creativity is given free rein but, with so many regulations preventing old buildings from being altered, how do householders update their homes without falling foul of the authorities? To answer this question let’s take a look at three more residential transformations that have given dilapidated period properties a new lease of life. Contrary to popular belief, the planning and conservation agencies charged with preserving our architectural heritage are here to help prolong an important building’s usefulness. In other words, they understand that modifications must be made if old buildings are to survive and a good example of what I’m talking about is the remodelling of a Grade II listed, early 19th Century mansion house, which later became a school, in the heart of a Newcastle conservation area.

Undoing decades of mistreatment by inky-fingered children was a daunting task but the new owners set about it with alacrity. Their vision was to seamlessly integrate a bold ‘architectural statement’ with the traditional elegance of the existing building. To deliver this ‘wow factor’, the new owners turned to noted North East architect Bill Hopper and they are delighted with the results: “Bill has created some fantastic buildings in the North East that have achieved exactly what we wanted. Even more importantly, we believed that it was crucial for our architect to have a proven track record with this type of project because a good reputation would help the planning authorities have confidence in our proposals from the outset.” This proved to be an eminently sensible approach because the planning application went through without a hitch. The owners also took advice from Sanderson Young because they wanted to make sure that their finished home would not outstrip the local housing market’s ability to produce a return on their substantial investment should the need arise to resell. “The original building has now been returned to residential use and the promised wow factor is the breathtaking, double-height, west-facing, steel and glass ‘wrap-around’ atrium that makes the most of the spectacular sunsets and the contemporary courtyard garden, which was designed by Bill’s wife Lin. It took a lot of hard work to bring this project to a successful conclusion but everything is so much easier if you work with your architect and give them a sensible brief!” The importance of using a qualified professional with the proper experience is underlined in my next example of a spectacular transformation because this project required the removal of the property’s entire ground floor elevation! Like many older houses in the heart of Jesmond, this 1930s villa is blessed with a lovely garden and to make the most of it the homeowner decided to install large, bi-fold glazed doors across the full width of the property’s rear. The brief to their architect also called for the complete remodelling of the internal room layout, especially around the kitchen and dining room, to create spacious, open plan areas that could be subdivided by more folding, glazed partitions when required. >>

“MY ADVICE TO ANYONE CONTEMPLATING SUCH A DEMOLITION AND REBUILD IS TO DO THEIR RESEARCH THOROUGHLY. WE LOVE OUR NEW HOME SO MUCH BECAUSE WE TOOK THE TIME TO PLAN EVERY DETAIL…

Sanderson Young would like to thank all the householders who allowed their extraordinary properties to appear in this article. Their cooperation is very much appreciated. 126

<< Such an ambitious project required replacing large sections of the internal and external walls supporting the property’s upper storeys with a steel frame. To ensure the whole house didn’t collapse, the homeowner wisely decided to employ an architect to draw up the plans and the natural choice was the aforementioned Bill Hopper who has made designing steel frames something of a speciality. Inevitably, some element of compromise was required but, once again, employing an experienced professional was the key to the success of the project. As the homeowner explains: “I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of ‘bringing the outside in’ as this is the best way to make more use of a garden. Once I’d seen exactly what I wanted in a magazine, I approached Bill and he was a great guy to work with. He listened carefully to what we wanted and gave us three practical options from which to choose. Of course, you have to give your architect a clear idea of what you want in the initial brief but it’s also really important to be flexible and listen to their advice. After all you’re paying for their knowledge.” Again taking the time to plan properly and listening to the proper advice helped the homeowners achieve their desired results but so far we’ve only considered extending and remodelling existing buildings. What if a homeowner wants to totally demolish a tired old property and build a brand new home from scratch? Such a scheme is the ultimate in architectural transformations and this is exactly what happened to an unremarkable dormer bungalow in Gosforth which had come to the end of its useful life. The new owners took the eminently practical view that, if there was nothing worth saving, the only sensible solution was to start again and so the bulldozers moved in. As the owner succinctly puts it: “My personal philosophy is that each building should be of its time. If an old house has no notable history, or inherent

architectural merit, simply adding endless extensions ends up in a mishmash of inappropriate styles that appeals to no one. We therefore took the decision to build an entirely new, contemporary-styled home that’s light, bright and belongs firmly in the 21st Century.” With this in mind the new owners engaged Darren Blake, of North Shields based Blake Hopkinson Architecture, to design their dream home and Gosforth builders JD Joinery and Building Services to undertake its construction. However, whilst the actual building work took a mere twelve months, the preparation and planning took a great deal longer. “My advice to anyone contemplating such a demolition and rebuild is to do their research thoroughly. We love our new home so much because we took the time to plan every detail and I remember looking at hundreds of design websites, such as Pinterest, so I could convey my ideas to Darren. For some reason a lot of the pictures I chose were of houses with flat roofs and so he started designing our house from the top down!” The importance of working together is emphasised by Joe Dixon, managing director of JD Joinery and Building Services, who turned the architect’s plans and the homeowner’s dreams into reality:“The finished property has a very modern aesthetic and the exterior hides what is a very advanced sustainable home. The scale of this project called for a strong team approach by all professionals to ensure that the skills needed to construct a sustainable building of this magnitude could be achieved for the client. The result is not only a landmark residential home for the North East but a shining example of how an energy efficient property can be an exciting place to call home.” Apart from allowing householders to create a home perfectly suited to their individual requirements, a brand new build has several financial advantages. For a start you can claim back any VAT incurred during construction and starting with a blank canvas allows homeowners to incorporate all the latest insulating materials, heat exchangers, solar panels and other ecotechnologies that can save money on household bills. Though it takes some time to recoup the cost of these innovations, there’s no doubt that going green is much easier to achieve during construction than afterwards. So, in conclusion, what have we learned from our investigation? Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to be bold. Don’t be put off by the jungle of red tape, the cost or even the disruption. If you have the vision to make an important contribution to the brave new world of North East architecture, then choose your architect and go for it!

THE RATE OF CHANGE WITHIN THE CAR INDUSTRY IS ABOUT TO BECOME TRULY ELECTRIFYING, LITERALLY.

After more than 100 years of driving vehicles powered by the internal combustion engine, most of us will be switching to pure or partial battery propulsion within a decade. This is the forecast of every motor manufacturer and Government in the world, as the gradual switch-over gains momentum to the point where the number of people racing to get behind the wheel of an electric car turns into a stampede. The same thing happened at the turn of the last century when horses disappeared from highways within just ten years after thousands of years as the major driving force. Sceptics said that cars would never catch on but Henry Ford suddenly found he was selling two million Model Ts a year as early as 1925, with many manufactured in England. Precisely the same thing happened with mobile phones, which were cumbersome, unreliable and had poor ranges initially, but improved rapidly to the point where two decades ago sales reached their current sustained rate of 100 million a year. Now it is the turn of the electric car, which experts predict will account for 90 per cent of all vehicle sales by 2040, which is nearer than you may think. We are currently in the embryonic stage of this revolution, with just 355,000 electric cars in the UK, and just two million out of the world’s one billion vehicles currently being electric, half of which are in use in China. However, motor manufacturers are predicting that half of all new vehicles will be electric in just over a decade, which will cut oil production by 20 million barrels a day and reduce carbon emissions by more than half, allegedly. >>

<< Whilst petrol and diesel Luddites are bemoaning the impending demise of any semblance of driving pleasure associated with this new crop of green machines, the reality is that nothing could be further from the truth. Although there are shortcomings concerning the driving range of many pure electric models at the moment, in terms of power and performance they are simply untouchable. Consider that a battery-powered Tesla is quicker than a petrol-powered Porsche 911 Turbo S, with a neck-wrenching 0-60mph acceleration time of just 2.3 seconds. Triple F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has just unveiled a new Mercedes-Benz that uses the same hybrid technology as his race car to generate a massive 1000bhp. This is achieved by a combination of lithium-iron cell batteries and a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 petrol engine that collectively endow the car with a top speed of 210mph and acceleration to 120mph in six seconds. This may be exceptional by the current standards of even the most powerful gas-guzzling conventional supercars, but not in comparison to rival pure electric or hybrid models, of which there are already a surprising number. China’s NextEV Nio EP9 can scorch to 60mph in just over two and a half seconds, with a top speed of 195mph, thanks to an incredible output of 1,340bhp from its four electric motors. Boasting a range of 265 miles, it has also recorded a new chapter in history by taking the lap record for Germany’s challenging Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring from petrol-powered rivals. Mainstream manufacturer Renault’s electric Trezor model may not be in the same league in terms of performance, but is a far cry from the company’s battery-powered Zoe model and gives a glimpse into the future. Declared the world’s most beautiful concept model, it is currently quicker than any of the French firm’s conventional cars, with a 0-60mph acceleration time of just four seconds.

TESLA MODEL S

Renault says it paves the way for an exciting range of forthcoming high-performance electric models. It is not just sports cars that boast impressive performance from their pure electric or hybrid combinations, because even the most luxurious models are getting in on the act too. The 18-feet long Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 generates 740bhp to endow it with acceleration to 60mph in under four seconds, with a steady 155mph cruising speed. It has a range of 200 miles and the ability to generate 60 miles of driving with just five minutes of charging. One of the most ground-breaking phenomena of the newcomers is the creation of a new world order in terms of design and production bases, with countries like Croatia coming to the fore. Zagreb-based Rimac is often credited with being the original creator of the electric supercar, with an output of 1,110 horsepower and an almost unbelievable 1,180lb/ft of torque, or pulling power. Quicker than a Porsche Spyder 918, the Rimac reaches 60mph in a fraction over two and a half seconds and boasts a top speed of 220mph. Another unlikely hot bed of electric sports car production is the town of Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, which is home to the incongruously-named Detroit Electric SP:01. Revived a decade ago by former Lotus boss Albert Lamb, the company is about to introduce what it claims is the fastest twoseater affordable production sports car in the world. Achieving an impressive power to weight ratio, it accelerates from

NISSAN AND ITS NORTH EAST-BASED PARTNERS HAVE BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE AND BATTERY DEVELOPMENT AND IT WILL NOT BE LONG BEFORE THEIR RANGE OF BEHIND-THE-SCENES ELECTRIC SUPERCARS CHARGE ON TO THE MARKET TOO. rest to 60mph in 3.7 seconds, which is quicker than any conventional Lotus. Claiming to be the lightest car of its type, thanks to its carbon fibre and aluminium body, the 285bhp/210kW engine endows it with a 155mph top speed. Electric cars are also laying claim to a superior level of electronic and technological sophistication in other ways. Typical of this is the battery and charging process of the Detroit Electric, which turns the vehicle into a power source for both the grid and the home, whilst an advanced battery management system gathers data about the car’s battery health and on-board telematics and communicates it directly to the factory. The car even comes with an app-based system that allows the driver to search for roadside charge points and then pre-book charging time. Nissan and its North East-based partners have been at the forefront of electric vehicle and battery development and it will not be long before their range of behind-the-scenes electric supercars charge on to the market too.

Baking since she was 12, Penny’s career began when accompanying her father to Tynemouth stamp fairs as a child. Selling cakes to stamp dealers, Penny’s cake making flair was evident from a young age. Penny would provide desserts while commandeering the popular Blackmore’s restaurant in Narrowgate, Alnwick, alongside husband John, and later, as they ran The Tankerville Arms in Eglingham together. She explains, “It’s so satisfying seeing people really enjoying something which you’ve created”. Showcasing baking beauties such as her more-ish Oreo cake, which will instantly make your mouth water, Penny welcomes private orders and supplies products to local businesses including Scott’s of Alnmouth, Grannies in Alnwick, Café 95 in Gosforth and Jaspers in Amble. Extremely passionate about baking, her memorable cake and dessert repertoire is joined by gorgeous chocolate creams, making an ideal Christmas gift. Meanwhile, brand new to Amble is Kirsten’s sweet treat and cakery hub, K’s Little Kakery. Located within pod number 5 at Amble harbour, Kirsten provides crepes, hot chocolate, homemade soups and a veritable feast of cakes supplied by Stoney Oak Cakery. Doddie Weir’5 Discretionary Trust was established to support the welfare of Doddie and his family after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). DW5’s aim is to support Doddie, Kathy and their family in the months and years ahead as they live with this, currently, incurable condition. As Trustees, we believe the Trust can serve as a way of giving the Weir family the practical help they need, while raising awareness of this degenerative disease. Doddie is one of rugby’s most recognised faces and personalities, a champion winner at club level for Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and on the international stage for Scotland and the British and Irish Lions. There are also plans in place to establish a charitable foundation, to be known as My Name’5 Doddie Foundation by the end of 2017. This will be a registered charity and will raise funds both to investigate the causes and potential cures for MND and make grants to individuals suffering from MND to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

HOSPITALITY & HOPE SOUTH TYNESIDE

for more information about volunteering, fundraising or making a donation:

Hospitality & Hope was founded by Amelia Luffrum in 2012, beginning the charity’s vital work with disadvantaged people in South Tyneside. A Christian-faith organisation, their achievements are inspirational. Creating supported living accommodation in South Shields, care plans are devised per client; those in need require 18-30 months accommodation and additional support after this time. Relying on volunteers prior to January 2016, Hospitality & Hope have one full-time and two part-time staff members. Additional to their food bank, H & H are converting space opposite the Chichester Metro into a community café. Hospitality & Hope Patron Sir David Chapman Bt says, “The last 9 months have been amazing. The highlight was the announcement in June that we were a recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the equivalent of an MBE for charities – the only charity to receive the award in Tyne & Wear. This recognises our wonderful volunteers and is an endorsement of the work that H & H tries to do. It follows the award of a BEM to the charity’s founder Amelia Luffrum in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List for “services to the homeless and needy in South Tyneside.” In July our Supported Accommodation Unit opened and we now have 3 residents and expect the cafe to open in the next few weeks.” Amelia Luffrum retired from Hospitality & Hope in March after 15 years of incredible work, with fellow trustees, volunteers and the community continuing to expand their crucial cause.

We offer all the benefits of single sex education, with the social and cultural merits of a balanced and mixed environment. Parents are welcome to arrange a visit to any of the Schools. Please contact the Head of Admissions on 0191 275 0608. www.dameallans.co.uk
