Over the summer of 2011 many property professionals are reflecting that the future for the housing market looks strong and solid.

t

hroughout much of 2011 the London market has seen rising house prices due to excess demand and a shortage of supply. The international buyer is certainly keen to invest in the UK and the international headquarters of London city. It is clear that, to many people, the UK still provides a very safe haven for property investment. Property prices have readjusted over recent years and realistic pricing is still required in many locations to achieve sales. Turbulence in the European market, with the restructuring of sovereign debt from many of its members, will continue to create increased pressure on banks throughout those countries, and in such times increasing numbers of people are beginning to reflect that property is the safest location for investment. In the North East of England we are selling the majority of properties at 2003 prices and, as we approach 2012, increasing numbers of economists are telling us that our supply of housing stock is woefully inadequate for the increasing demand of the next three years. This can only lead to one thing; increased values. Over the last six months our company has been involved in a great number of exciting developments, including the sale of four prime residential development sites, where, for the first time in five years, we saw very competitive bidding from buyers wanting the land to build on. We are very excited about some of our residential development schemes which we are looking forward to launching in 2012, as well as the ongoing developments we have, ranging from the magnificent Glororum development, near Bamburgh, to the fabulous modern apartments in the heart of Ponteland village, as well as good quality family homes in the Tyne Valley and, at the coast, at Seaton Delaval. Sanderson Young have always been known for their skills in working with builders to satisfy demand in a specific location, assist with pricing the scheme correctly and developing a good strong marketing brief to ensure the scheme can be sold quickly. The latest version of our website was launched in September 2011 and the activity from that website has doubled from the previous version. Clever new media, promoting houses of the week, matching applicant searches and tempting those who are browsing, are increasing our results and volumes of valuations, viewings and sales agreed. As we go to press one of the featured houses in our rare! collection in the heart of Jesmond, which was only launched two weeks ago, at a guide price of £1.4

safe houses million, has had six viewings and three offers and I am delighted to see that confidence for prime Newcastle housing priced at £1 million plus is beginning to return. There are many clients who carefully watch the housing market, ready to buy and re-invest in luxury housing. Increasing numbers of rental houses have balanced the books between those who wish to buy and own their own home and those who want the flexibility to move very quickly, without long term obligations. A word of caution for those who are renting – please watch the mid and high value housing very closely, since we are beginning to see house prices higher than where they were at the peak of the market in 2006, particularly in Jesmond and Gosforth. This is very much evident with Edwardian terraces and good quality semi detached family homes in the mid price categories. It is the first time demand has outstripped supply. Sanderson Young are delighted to be working with Gentoo Homes, who have a fabulous scheme in Alnwick. They are offering some tremendous finance packages, which are making it very easy for first time buyers to invest in property and to own their own home. It is increasingly important that builders and

developers work with banks to further develop these mortgage deals, as well as part and whole ownership. Many tenants are now paying a greater rent per month than they would a mortgage, and this imbalance needs to be corrected. I would like to congratulate my team for their tremendous dedication in a difficult market and for their expertise in bringing results to their clients. We are aware from the statistics in the prime residential areas that we are outperforming the majority of other estate agents, giving good solid advice on how best to sell and how to use the most effective forms of marketing – through websites, the Sanderson Young App and quality promotion like this magazine, as well as regional press. As European leaders and worldwide bankers negotiate figures that few of us can really understand, we quietly reflect in the North of England on a brighter and more confident six months ahead. If you have any housing needs, whether to buy, sell, rent or finance, please speak to any of my team for solid, dependable and straight forward advice. I am available at: duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk or 0191 223 3500.

greenlightfordevelopers At last, house builders are now experiencing more positive conditions thanks to plans to allow a major expansion of building on land in the North East formerly designated green belt. Gateshead and Newcastle councils are planning to allow the building of 36,000 homes on green belt land in an essential move to provide homes to keep up with rising demand. This is welcome news for house builders, who will welcome this change in the planning system to encourage the building of new homes as demand continues to rise with the ageing population and the increase in single households. Here at Sanderson Young, we offer a range of services to assist builders, developers and investors. Our strength is in new homes, residential investment and land sales and we also offer speciality surveying services. We look forward to assisting in bringing these new prime redevelopment sites to market as conditions continue to improve. It is incredibly difficult for people to navigate their way round the market themselves these days, simply because of the wildly different policies now being operated by lenders. We, on the other hand, are securing mortgages every day for people at all levels, including first-time buyers, who we also advise on every step of the home buying process, home movers, people who wish to remortgage and those buying to let. Our clients value our personal service and the fact that we can potentially save you an enormous amount of time by searching the whole of the market. Our online mortgage calculator and product finder also offers accurate live product information while we do our utmost to make your move as seamless as possible. tudents of architecture agree that Northumberland is home to some of the finest country homes England can offer. Many date back to the days of the great architectural visionary John Dobson, but to assume the great man has a monopoly on our region’s best country homes is to deny the existence of some notable modern examples. Celtic Manor is highly contemporary, but like the great country homes of history, it will stand the test of time as it matures into its spectacular woodland setting. A truly grand country mansion created within the last decade, it is one of the finest new-build detached houses available now in Northumberland and represents a rare opportunity to live in one of the

t’s 8.30am, and the sun is streaming through the windows as business people, mothers with little ones and assorted others sit down to a bacon sandwich and a latte, looking on as other customers drop by for a cappuccino to take to work. Duncan Young jumped when the opportunity came up to take over the running of Café No. 95 in the High Street, Gosforth, at the start of the year, and is genuinely delighted with how popular it has become. It’s a family affair; Duncan’s eldest son Charlie has a part time job, as does his god daughter Rachael. There is Illy coffee, Chai teas, croissants and bacon rolls, gourmet jacket potatoes, homemade cakes and paninis in a simple enough but quality menu that has all-round appeal. Now, while holding with this basic premise - and with an alcohol licence already in place - there are adventurous plans afoot. A little background for those who don’t know: Duncan is MD of Sanderson Young estate agency

with a branch next door, a leading flag-flyer for the Gosforth area and a lover of good food, good wine, and good company. In which case, broadening the appeal of No. 95 to create an evening bistro is inevitable. Now fully licensed and with the kitchen build ongoing in the basement, Duncan hopes one day to build onto the pavement with a Paris-style concertina

window extension to be kept open or shut according to the weather. In the meantime, the café mood will transform nightly with table cloths, music, lighting, quality crockery and glass to create a bistro which is close to Duncan’s heart. “The feel of the place will be very different to what you get during the day,” he says. “We’re planning to run an international menu, based on the idea of Spanish- >>

He’s perfecting a menu that will change with the seasons and working on dishes including calamari in tempura batter with aioli; pork medallions in a blue cheese and creme fraiche sauce; chick peas with spinach, coriander and a mildly spiced tomato sauce; seafood cakes with sweet chilli dips and croquettes stuffed with Manchego cheese and Serrano ham or salt cod. “But even if we do dress it up, it’ll still be a coffee shop during the day,” Duncan adds. “In the evening, it’s not meant to be a formal dining experience, either. We want to give people quality food at a reasonable price. “It’s about earthy, basic but very good food, at the right price. Good hospitality always excites

me and fine wine is an important part of that. I’m into consistency, high standards, and a friendly, casual atmosphere.” The wine list, he adds, is extremely important. “We’ve done a lot of research, and we’ve some wonderful wines, nothing outside of the £9.99 to £20 bracket, so the best wines at the right prices. Some restaurants triple the price of their wines, but that’s not what we’re going to be about. “Although there may be an under-the-shelf private collection range for those who have something to celebrate,” he adds, with another grin. Chamonix, renowned for its near death experience off-piste skiing, is surprisingly welcoming to lovers of winter sports of all levels, providing an unforgettable holiday even for the intermediate, says Rosie McGlade

s

kiing is one of life’s great equalisers, at least for those whose personal image is largely rooted elsewhere. You may be important at work, wildly intelligent or gifted with figures, but the slopes will have you branded according to your ability to conquer them alone, with ‘intermediate’ the moniker lumped on the majority of enthusiasts, try as we will to bend ze knees in all the right places. In one very special sense, Chamonix is the champion of this noble once-a-year die-hard, the courageous but doomed-to-be average Brit, who finds him or herself barred from the fabled descents of the beautiful people elsewhere in the world. Of all the runs in all the world, the one that thrills the heart of many is the Vallee Blanche, a 17km off-piste adventure in some of the most beautiful and dramatic

scenery in the Alps, longer with good snow in the valley, in the shadow of Mont Blanc, across glaciers, and, almost uniquely, given its credentials, within easy scope of intermediate skiers. You even access it by lift. Yes, it will terrify you, but not once you have your skis on and you begin your descent, in its silence and staggering beauty, down the valley’s gentle blue and red gradients, and superbly flattering snow. The scary bit comes right at the start, when you have to rope up to walk to where it all begins, skis and poles in hand, down an exposed ridge with lethal drops on either side, and which makes great sense of hiring one of the resort’s many ski guides. That, and negotiation of the crevasses further down. The standard advice is that you do the run towards the end of a week’s skiing, when your head for heights is steadied, and your legs that bit stronger. The rewards are a once-in-a-lifetime skiing experience, where the word unforgettable can be properly applied. While mostly fabled for extremists, attracted to

Chamonix’s true hard-core challenges (of which there are a great many - advanced skiers will be pleased to know they can choose much more dangerous options even down the Vallee Blanche), the sort who wouldn’t get out of bed without an ice axe in hand (the Chamonerds), Chamonix is in fact pretty accommodating to all winter visitors. ice rink, and it’s easy to organise tobogganing, snow tubing or husky rides. There are a number of good nursery slopes and easy runs, with lots of nice blue runs in Brevent and La Tour, with Les Houches perfect for beginners. Something for everyone and jolly easy to get to. What more do you want? Fabulous accommodation peut-etre? Well, we have a suggestion here, too.

If you are beyond intermediate, then the scope for off-piste skiing is enormous…

unlike so many other French stations, real local shops, where you can buy lovely cheese and cakes, and there’s lots of great walking. It is, therefore, not a bad place at all to end up for those who don’t actually ski or snowboard, but who are there for the mountain air and beauty and the après, and because their partner does. You can also go all international and get the bus to Courmayeur in Italy for a pasta lunch. Chamonix is just an hour from Geneva Airport, which gives it a vastly reduced transfer time than many

comparable resorts. There are flights most days between Newcastle and Geneva (check out EasyJet.) Skiing in Chamonix takes place from six separate lift stations, connected by ski bus as it is not possible to ski between them all. If you are beyond intermediate, then the scope for off-piste skiing is enormous and it’s easy to hire a guide to take you through the fabled Grands Montets region. However, if you’re building up to the Vallee Blanche, or enjoy a more laid back time on the slopes among some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe, there are a good selection of gentle, open pistes and tree-lined runs at Les Houches and La Balme. Whether a skier or not, you must take the legendary Aiguille du Midi cable car to the top, and get out and admire the view of the world from 3,800 metres. It’s a hairy ride, and you’ll most certainly be needing a drink at some point afterwards. More good news Chamonix’s reputation extends from amazing skiing to wild or sophisticated nightlife, depending how you like it. There’s a great selection of bars and clubs, and some fantastic restaurants, the king of which is the Albert 1er with its two Michelin stars. Chamonix is surprisingly accommodating to children, too, and the resort is very popular with French families. Away from the slopes, there’s a swimming pool and an

Situated on the edge of the woods with breath-taking views of Mont Blanc, the Cerisier is a luxurious four-storey chalet built in traditional Alpine style in its own huge garden area. The chalet, sleeping 10–12, has been designed to accentuate light and space with high ceilings and large windows opening straight towards the Drus, making the most of its unique setting in the valley. It is perfectly secluded, yet in easy reach of ski lifts, summer trails and the amenities of Chamonix town. Among its many fantastic facilities are an outdoor hot tub, a wrap-around seating balcony capturing views in all directions, a six person sauna, log fire, satellite TV, DVD collection, X-Box 360, a snug / cinema room, pool table and dart board, and electric boot warmers. The ground floor bedroom forms part of a selfcontained apartment with its own living, dining and kitchen area, with a further bedroom adjoining, and three more bedrooms and bathrooms on the first and second floors. Guests choose the type of holiday they want. The self-catering option has a regular cleaner and optional daily continental breakfast delivery, and organisation of all ski hire, lift passes, lessons and ski guides, while the fully-catered holiday provides a totally bespoke service that is exactly as you want it, with chefs, chauffeurs and a masseuse just the start!

North east Corfu is one of the loveliest areas this beautiful island has to offer and Aleka is a charming property built in the style of the traditional Corfiot country cottage, though with a lot more space and to a higher specification than the term might suggest. The villa is on a hillside overlooking St Stephano Bay and has open-plan living spaces and beautiful gardens and grounds with pool and terraces.

here can be few things in life as daunting as interviewing a fashion designer; particularly one who is renowned for glamour. So it was with some trepidation that I set off to see Kate Fearnley, whose designs grace the backs of red carpet regulars such as singers Sarah Harding, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Pixie Lott, TV presenter Zoe Salmon, even Katie Price’s bridesmaids (wedding number three…). So what does one wear for such an appointment? In the event, an unremarkable but comfortable ensemble of jeans, stripy shirt and tank top, heels and a statement bag. And no, I needn’t have worried; Kate Fearnley is a very down-to-earth fashionista and on this particular wet Monday in Middlesbrough she is resplendent in - wait for it – leggings and a vest top. In other words, Kate is more comfortable down the pub than gracing the red carpet. In fact, she is so un-fussy, so un-obsessed by style, appearance and ego (unlike so many in her profession) it’s almost disappointing. This doesn’t last long, however. My tolerance for the admittedly clichéd narcissism, self-obsession and judgemental nature of many in the high fashion set is generally pretty low and Kate makes for a very refreshing change. “There’s no glamour in this job and I hardly ever wear a dress,” she laughs as we rifle through racks of her designs, all of them extremely glamorous, ultra-feminine and exquisitely detailed. It strikes me that if I were asked to guess her job I’d probably go for artist, indie songwriter or poet; certainly nothing that generally attracts a pursuer of life in the limelight. She tells a lovely story of the night of the 2010 Cosmopolitan Awards, when she was presented with a

highly prestigious Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year award. “It was just very, very surreal,” she says, shaking her head, as if still not quite sure it really happened. “There were all these mega celebs, and some amazing people who’d won awards for all sorts of courageous acts, and there’s me. I felt I shouldn’t have been there at all. “I was really nervous and literally spoke for about 20 seconds before running off stage. Then, after I’d had a bit too much to drink, they told us we’d all been invited to Downing St the next day, and we had to be there at 8am!” Kate was horrified, but took being presented to the then-PM’s wife Sarah Brown in her stride. “She was just lovely, thank God,” she says. One imagines Kate was relieved to head home afterwards to her native Middlesbrough, where she can go to work in her jeans and spend her evenings in the pub. And while she may not be entirely comfortable on the party circuit, her dresses most certainly are. Renowned for sexy, flattering cuts, her bold use of colour and liberal use of texture with >>

<< ribbon, lace, ruffles and appliqué, Kate’s work is 100 per cent sensational. Her celebrity client base is glamorous and growing, though she appears entirely unaffected by it. Fittingly discreet, my plea for stories of tantrums and tiaras is deftly swerved, though Kate will be drawn to admit that dressing Katie Price’s bridesmaids at her mansion was a little, um, “unusual”. The rest is left to my fervent imagination. Her fabrics, which are sourced worldwide, are sumptuous and her designs cut to flatter, often with a nod to the 1950s with structured busts and hips, exaggerated sleeves, full skirts lined with net and the slinkiest pencil silhouettes. These are clothes little girls dream of and Kate’s boutique in Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road is a modern fairy tale, with pretty wrought iron work, antique mirrors and glass-fronted china cabinets contrasting with flashes of zebra print and neon pink to provide a perfectly apt theatrical backdrop for her creations. Like Kate’s designs, this place is funky, fresh and raises a smile. The people who shop here generally do so by appointment, selecting designs off the peg or made-to-measure for every event on the social calendar. When we meet, the Ebor meeting has just made its usual splash at York Racecourse and Kate and the small team of three machinists and pattern cutter who populate the warren of workrooms above the shop, have been very – very – busy. “We’re rushed off our feet for big events,” Kate says. “You have to be so careful to ensure exclusivity, so we do hard-core record taking – where each client is going, what she’s wearing and when.” Kate’s talent for design is in her blood. Her grandmother was a seamstress and her aunt – Liz Ford – was a fashion designer and university lecturer in fashion. “I learned lots from her, including the reality of this job and the fact that there isn’t much glamour in it,” she says. Sadly, Liz died when Kate was 16, so she didn’t see her

niece progress from dressing her dolls to become an international designer renowned for her signature quirky sophistication. “The most important thing is to flatter,” says Kate, who is blessed with a model figure but also enough good sense to know just how vital it is for those of us with curves in the wrong places to feel good when we’re on parade. “There is nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable,” she says, “and my dresses definitely flatter. Sometimes women come to me and they think they can’t wear a dress, but I know by looking what shapes will suit and new clients are often amazed how good they can look in clothes like these.” There is a strong theatrical influence running through Kate’s work which, commercial considerations aside, she would like to explore further. “Maybe I’ll do a small collection of the more out-there stuff,” she says. “I would love that.” Meanwhile, Kate’s designs are now available at more than 80 stockists and online and are featured frequently in those magazine pages which follow the Beautiful People at all the Beautiful Places. TV presenter Zoe Salmon manages to capture the Fearnley style. “I’ve worn Kate for everything from photo shoots and TV appearances to red carpet events,” she says. “I love the style; sexy but elegant, perfect!” It seems Kate has discovered the holy grail of fashion – sophisticated, quirky elegance and va, va, voom in one quirky package. Her work is fresh, exciting and doesn’t take itself too seriously; just like her. omeone has just had a fag in the kitchen as we step inside Healey Hall, and the dogs, as usual, are everywhere (there seem way more than four); there’s a gorgeous-looking young man making tea who must be the son, while the daughter is still in bed. It’s homely as much as it is beautiful. How do they do that? And how does anyone get to have this much good taste? How do these people find each other - the landed son and the fabulous designer? I try to act normal. Not that it’s easy, as the hall itself, while grand, is one of the most beautiful family homes I’ve ever seen, with something that compels you to stare at every turn. It’s familiar, in that I’ve had a good look through the Tulip and Nettle website before arriving, and this is clearly where founder and designer Amynta

Warde-Aldam styles the photo shoots which feature her friends’ children. It’s also been in loads of magazines and weekend supplements, Amynta says, which she’s fine about so long as it promotes Tulip and Nettle, and which she’s very good at making sure happens, as the house itself, and the family heirlooms within, provide much inspiration. The estate, with its sweeping views over this hidden, sloping stretch of part-arable, part-forested Northumberland, has been in the Warde-Aldam family for around 200 years. Amynta married into it, having originated from Edinburgh. She established Tulip and Nettle - a range of very English children’s clothes (with an emerging adults line) entirely made in Northumberland - when her own two children were small, having herself trained and then taught at the illustrious Central St Martins in London, and worked in the heady European design world for several years. It’s a special local industry we should really be proud of, and which actually sells more than 75 per cent of its stock to customers in London, who are drawn to the high grade design and materials and the story of what Tulip and Nettle is all about. I think I meet Nettle. I certainly meet Violet - she’s a wiry Jack Russell, the friendliest. Nettle, if it’s her, is older, and smooth haired. Tulip was a pug. They have another pug now, a waddly thing that struggles to keep up, and there’s a sausage dog in the mix, too. Anyhow, on the back of all this, the name has lost any resonance of twee that I might once, if I’m honest, have attached. As has the range, for that matter, which really is fabulous. It’s not even that expensive. In fact there’s nothing I can write about here with any hint of

the cynical, the cautious. The whole place is a bit of another world. The husband wears red tartan trousers. You just don’t see that where I come from. Amynta herself verges on perfect, one of those women who could be French, or Italian; petite, good looking, wearing fantastic clothes yet seeming to have made no effort. Were it not for her big, warm and frequent smile, she’d probably be rather intimidating, but she’s actually really friendly, and, well, lovely. We’re now in the Hayloft, a large attic room above an old stable block (still with the original wooden stalls inside, all cobwebby, like a storybook scene, which I stumble on by accident as I try to find the way up), a stone’s throw from the hall. The Hayloft itself is a beamed, clean, bright space full of fragrant rolls of fabrics and the odd sewing machine, ironing board, table with scissors and paper patterns, and racks of little frocks and jackets and things. Like another storybook, I suppose. “It started in a really teeny way, just when the urge took me to make something as the children were growing up, but it’s got a bit more serious in the last five years,” Amynta says, modestly. “It’s very, very English. We use a lot of country fabrics, moleskin cords and chunky tweeds. Our central pieces are things like our Hero shirt, which is based on an old, pre First World War cricket shirt from the family home.” She shows us a striped Eton Rifles coat, the real deal, owned by husband Jamie’s grandfather before the

Great War. It’s beautiful, both in fabric and design, and would look incredibly cool even today. Indeed, there’s a plastic bag of badges attached to it, which her children had it covered with when they wore it as teenagers, which Amynta thought looked wonderful. I’m sure some mothers would have been horrified. It’s the lining and old label she particularly loves, and which have informed her range of clothing. There’s also a chest, made of beautiful red cedar wood to repel bugs, and which has the same grandfather’s name, Lieutenant Colonel Warde-Aldam, on a war-time manila luggage label, another inspiration. It was the chest he took to Egypt, where he fought. “So the range is rooted in history,” she continues, “but with a modern interpretation. The fabrics we use are incredibly light and soft, they’re not heavy like proper vintage clothes. “I think that’s been the biggest thing that’s changed in fashion. Even clothes from the 70s, when you pick them up, they feel really heavy. “Now we have fabrics such as very fine polar fleeces that we might use to line a light cotton dress, and which will make it a lovely warm item of clothing for the winter.” This is T&N HQ, but there are a couple of small factory units in the county where most of the clothes are made, and a team of home knitters who do the little jumpers and cardies and things. Yes, they’ve been affected by the economic >>

<< downturn, although their bridesmaid and page boy range are as healthy as ever (the silk tulle bridesmaid’s dress, incidentally, feels like it’s made of air), and they’ve had to re-strategise to an extent. “I think what we do anyway is value for money,” Amynta says, “given our production prices are way more expensive than anything mass produced. We’re

not expensive like typical children’s designer labels like Bonpoint. “But if there’s a particularly depressing economic news bulletin in the media, we see the effect on sales the very next day. “I guess that heavy consumption has simply gone out of fashion. We try particularly hard now to make

clothing which has a very enduring quality, things that people will treasure and want to keep, maybe pass down to their own children. “Things weren’t always as disposable as they have been. I can remember every pair of shoes I had when I was a child, and the thrill of getting a new pair. I can’t imagine my daughter would think back in the same sense at all, but I think maybe it’s healthy in a way.” There’s a lot of pastel for girls, but no ‘princess’ pinks, and no ‘padded bikinis’, as Amynta refers to it. “There’s a fine balance between being fun and being inappropriate. We do try to make children’s clothing, and not mini adult clothes.” In the hall of the Hall, in the fireplace, pieces of spruce mingle with half burnt candles, looking like Boxing Day. Yesterday, they did their winter shoot, Amynta seemingly effortlessly styling it all herself, although it must be hard work. Friends’ children arrived, and did their bit. “You don’t want them all too perfect or too beautiful, that’s boring.” It’s a phrase that doesn’t sum her up, nor her clothing range, because it does strive for perfection. But Tulip and Nettle reflects a childhood that’s happy, lovely but practical, and it’s rather seductive for that. Did you notice I liked it? Tulip and Nettle, www.tulipandnettle.com

The rural economy is benefitting as much as ever before from game shooting. Jane Pikett meets some of the people who keep a country tradition in fine fettle

32 | collection

OUT & ABOUT | SY

If you’re up on the rural economy these days, you will know already that game shooting is said to be close to recession-proof. It is not a poor man’s sport, yet shooting days are as popular as ever on the region’s moorlands, widely considered to be among the best in the UK. The sport owes its continuing prosperity to the dedicated souls who keep the game, train the dogs and beat and pick up on shoot days. They’re the largely unsung heroes of a rural way of life that brings millions a year to the region and they’re a dedicated bunch, handing their skills, their commitment to conservation and their love of the country down through the generations.

John The first time I met John Clark, he greeted me at the door of his home with a quiet hello, looked down at the excitable young Dalmatian doing his best to tie me and him up in knots and slowly raised an eyebrow. “Aye,” he said, after a long pause. “We’d better have a look at him, then.” And with that, he strolled off down the lane, me alongside, trying desperately to look like I was in control of my dog while my pet did his best to make me look stupid. Within a few yards, John had quietly relieved me of my dog and – a miracle – had him walking meekly to heel. There was no yanking, no shouting, no battle of wits. The dog simply knew his place, and our journey to the beautifully behaved pet I have now began. There’s a magic about John; a quietly considered, gentle approach which makes dog – and human – stop and listen. When his gun dogs – Labradors, Springer Spaniels and Working Cockers – are with him, they all look to him,

“I watched this man work his dog and was just fascinated,” he says. “That was it, I wanted to do it”

their pack leader. There is no doubt who is in charge, and no doubt that John’s quiet, often silent commands require no repeat. “I don’t shout,” says John. “You get better results just being quiet. And I don’t like people who are rough with their dogs. If I have a problem when I’m training a young dog, I just stand back and think for a while, and the answer generally comes.” This considered approach has made John a favourite trainer for gun dog owners and pet owners – those who keep gun dog breeds and those, like me, who simply need a steady hand. John and his wife Dot generally breed one litter a year from their Labradors (they have 15 Labradors, Springers and Working Cockers) and the pups from these litters are much sought-after for their superb genes. John’s skills as a trainer are in evidence in his own dogs and the scores trained by him working on shoots all over the region. What do John and Dot, who is fully involved in the breeding, look for in a dog? “A good line, a good temperament, and good looks,” he says simply – and the Clark dogs of the Campcolis Stud in Northumberland are all of that and more. John’s love of gun dog training began years ago when he was invited on a shoot at Langley in the Tyne Valley. “I watched this man work his dog and was just fascinated,” he says. “That was it, I wanted to do it.” That man was George Ridley, another renowned

breeder and trainer from the Tyne Valley, and that shoot was the beginning of a passion for training and working gun dogs which has prevailed for close to 30 years. People bring their dogs to John from far and wide. Some of them – including the model Stella Tennant and the Newcastle footballer Fabrizio Coloccini – bring a touch of celebrity to the quiet Northumberland countryside where the Clarks live, and these people - and their dogs – are welcomed just like the rest of us. >>

<< John’s best-ever dog? “Jack. He was only my second dog and I’ll never have another like him,” he says, adding quickly that Rod, a handsome black lab (that’s his picture on the previous page) known grandly as Campcolis Rodney (named for Rod Stewart because he’s a star) – comes very, very close. The errant Dalmatian, by the way, caused a bit of heartache, but John and I got him there in the end and he’s now a dog to be proud of. When people stop and compliment me on his behaviour, I tell them it’s all due to Northumberland’s own Dog Whisperer, John Clark a very quiet man. Nicky I’d assumed in my ignorance that women must be few and far between in the field, but no, says Nicky Gordon. “Women are good organisers, so while they’re certainly in the minority, you sometimes find them in charge of these burly Northumbrian men, which is often interesting,” she says with a smile. Nicky and her six dogs pick up game for shoots in north Northumberland up to four times a week during the season.

“I went freelance so that I could get the time to work with the dogs on the shoot,” she says. “I simply love it”

This requires long days out in the field, often walking many miles in filthy weather carrying heavy game. It all sounds about as far as you can get from her ‘other’ job - freelance PA and secretarial support for businesses in the area - and Nicky is passionate about it. “I went freelance so that I could get the time to work with the dogs on the shoot,” she says. “I simply love it.” Dogs are of course central to the successful operation of a game shoot, and their roles are clearly defined. The animals which sit beside the guns are so-called ‘peg dogs’ and they should sit quietly until the end of the drive before being allowed to pick up around the peg area. Then there are the beaters’ dogs – traditionally spaniels (Working Cockers and Springers) – who flush the game out of the undergrowth, and the picking-up dogs – traditionally Labradors – using their noses to recover shot game in deep heather and woodland, often hundreds of yards away. In reality nowadays you will see all types of gundog breeds and cross-breeds used in different roles in the field, with spaniels becoming increasingly popular in the picking up teams. You have to be clear what your dog’s function is going to be and assess its aptitude and attitude before you start training it to the task, says Nicky, who adds that instinct is incredibly strong in dogs bred from working lines. “They have to have a natural ability for the job,” she says. “They have to be biddable and enthusiastic, with natural curiosity to find things and a desire to work hard, retrieving all day long. They have to want to please you and you need to form a close working relationship.” Nicky has six dogs, including a young Working Cocker which she is just beginning to train. She also has two retrievers, one yellow lab, a Springer and a black Working Cocker. It can take up to two years to train one of these animals to the required standard, so is it the shoot itself, or working with and training dogs that she has the most passion for? “Oh, working with the dogs, definitely,” she says. “There is nothing more rewarding than channelling that natural instinct into a disciplined activity. The rapport that you form with your dog is incredible and the dogs love it so much because they are doing what they were bred to do.” Nicky respects the views of those who oppose the sport, but as she points out: “The birds live a good natural life on heather moors and open countryside, and game is wild, natural and free range and makes a nutritious, tasty meal.”

“They have to have a natural ability for the job,” she says. “They have to be biddable and enthusiastic… 34 | collection

essentially your own boss. I wouldn’t swap it”

…It’s a great way of life and you’re outside all the time,

Colin Gamekeeper Colin Lawley is a big country man with a big voice and a big laugh attached. Standing 6ft 3ins, laughter seems to come as easily as breathing to him, and his guffaws shake the north Northumberland woodland where he tends some 7,500 partridge and pheasant for local shoots. Colin, who is known by one and all as Shanks – a nickname given to him by a farmer who employed him as a young man who was a good deal skinnier than he is now – also keeps eight dogs for picking up on two shoots. Nearly half his birds will fall prey to the guns during the season, while foxes and the roads will take another 10 per cent. Shanks will then himself round in spring to raise more birds for next year. “It’s bloody hard work in all weathers, but somehow you just get stuck in it,” he says, with a hearty laugh. “I’ve been involved in shooting all my life and I’m 57 now, which shows it’s just a way of life,” he says, adding - with another big laugh - that were he in it for the money, he’d be sorely disappointed. “You get into it and you just don’t get out of it and that’s all there is to it. You’re out in all weather and when there’s 3ft of snow, you’re in that too. But it’s a way of life and that’s the great thing about it.” Colin’s children have been involved in shooting since they were kids too, and his son Shaun, 22, is a keeper and his daughter, Lisa, 25, helps out on her days off from her work as a carer. Colin’s wife Susan has also been involved over the years, so it’s a real family way of life. “I tried to persuade my son out of it,” says Colin, “if only because of the money, but he wouldn’t have it. It’s a great way of life and you’re outside all the time, essentially your own boss. I wouldn’t swap it.”

Jane Pikett meets Duncan Fisher, the visionary behind Northumberland’s hippest new hotel, members club and wedding venue, Newton Hall

romantic fantastical i tell Duncan Fisher he reminds me of Willy Wonka, larger-than-life hero of Roald Dahl’s much-loved fantasy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He takes it in good heart; you can’t offend Duncan, he’s good like that. Anyway, it’s meant in the nicest possible way. Duncan natural-born entrepreneur, enthusiast, lover of life – has so many ideas buzzing about behind his sparkling brown eyes it’s a wonder he can catch them before they whiz past. A true entrepreneur, he’s always open to opportunity, has no fear and a great sense of fun – and has none of the negatives affecting some others (furrowed brow, stress anxiety, heart bypass). Also, as a chartered accountant by trade, he is able to keep the risk taker in him in check. He’s spent the summer living close to Newton Hall - a beautiful Georgian pile in spectacular coastal north Northumberland which he is converting into a unique hotel, members’ club and quirky wedding venue.

36 | collection

He has a pile of wedding brochures with him; all of them saccharin-coated, po-faced, and full of photos of brides and grooms with faces like a wet weekend in Watford. “Look at this one,” he says, chucking over a brochure featuring a picture of a bride on the run. “She’s so bloody miserable, she’s running away! Your wedding should be a fantasy; a wonderful, amazing dream,” he asserts, “and most of all, it should be fun. What happened to that, eh?” Weddings at Newton Hall, he says, will be brilliantly planned, wonderfully memorable, that bit different from the norm, and huge fun. Newton Hall will also be the only venue in Northumberland offering outdoor wedding options,

including its own ‘Wedding Hill’, an Italianate wedding terrace, and an expansive beach. Duncan has always broken the mould, ever since the early noughties when he brought a flash, private-members’ bar and club to Newcastle in the shape of The Apartment in Collingwood Street. It was very much of its time –moneyed, a bit flash (Dom Perignon at £980 a bottle…) but there was substance behind the style. The food, from a kitchen led by the acclaimed David Kennedy, was superb. The place itself was beautiful. “And the bar staff handed you your drink, with a coaster, rather than chucking it at you,” says Duncan, reflecting on the general tone of Newcastle nightlife at the time.

“Your wedding should be a fantastic dream, a wonderful day,” he asserts, “but it should also be fun. What happened to that then, eh?”

bold PROFILE | SY

His business has grown steadily since under its umbrella company, Apartment Group, which is based in Newcastle in offices populated by impossibly beautiful, and extremely efficient, young things. The empire now includes the multi award-winning Newcastle venues Florita’s Miami Bar and Gardens (I know… I haven’t made it up), Madame Koo’s Hidden Bar and Sneaky Disco next door and nine other venues including the award-winning As You Like It; voted 7th Sexiest Restaurant in the World by The Observer. They all have a quirky, eccentric vibe, a certain something which has been pitched from way out leftfield and works beautifully. “We like to be a bit different; that bit quirky,” says Duncan with a broad smile, clambering over what is currently a building site in the garden of Newton Hall. “Look! This is going to be a spectacularly beautiful outdoor wedding terrace. Look at that view; 360 degrees of glorious Northumberland countryside. What a place to get married!” Duncan has a magic touch. His venues are consistently fresh, always refreshing. Apartment Group’s reputation is such that word of Newton Hall has got out months before it is due to open and weddings have already been booked for 2012 and 2013. Enthusiastic applications for Newton Hall’s private members’ club (they range from £500-£2,000 a year, plus a range of bespoke VIP packages) are also flying in. Meanwhile, mad vintage lampshades now adorn the bar of the Joiners Arms pub, just down the lane in Newton by the Sea, which Duncan bought recently. They are a nod to the quirky motif that prevails throughout Fisher’s venues, and the pub will provide another welcoming base for guests from the hall. “Park the car and relax; that’s it,” he says. “We’re applying for direct access to the beach, we’re going to add tennis courts, a pool, treatment rooms, hot tubs for all the suites in the estate cottages, beach huts and much more I can’t even talk about yet. “Newton Hall will be a genuinely unique hotel, members’ club and wedding venue. It will be uniquely relaxed, uniquely fun, and a unique escape. “People will come to chill and unwind over weeks or weekends. They may even just come for an afternoon to swim, walk, relax, or bring the kids to see a film in the screening room. “Wedding guests will stay for long, lazy weekends, while the weddings themselves, while being brilliantly planned and imaginatively executed, will also be huge fun. “There’s no package A, B or C; we’ll work with people’s own imagination, and if that means an Alice in Wonderland theme complete with the white rabbit, that’s what we’ll deliver.” Tennis courts and a wild flower meadow are being added to beautiful the four-acre grounds, there will be a horse and trap on hand for weddings and any number of fun additions such as tractor rides, beach parties and musicians, and the Hall’s interior decor will

be fantastically eccentric and very comfortable. The purpose-built function room and Italianate wedding terrace currently under construction on the footings of the hall’s original orangery will accommodate up to 150 seated guests, making Newton Hall one of the largest wedding venues in the region. Duncan’s partner Amanda and their daughters Eden, seven, and nine-year-old Maisie have had a great summer with him at Newton by the Sea. “It’s the simple pleasures of this place that we love,” he says. “We’ve had fantastic weekends here, hanging out on the beach, going for walks. It’s a spectacular part of the world.” He’s most excited when I tell him my husband proposed to me on the beach here, all the more so when I tell him I had a big celebration weekend at the holiday cottages round the corner. “So you know how great it is!” he says, those brown eyes sparkling. “Imagine this when it’s finished – beautiful, fantasy interiors, a totally relaxed place with direct access to the beach, loads of magical stuff for kids, a pub at the bottom of the garden. It’s perfect.” Fisher’s vision and his enthusiasm are particularly appealing. It’s the Willy Wonka factor; the innate conviction that anything is possible. “And I’m lucky,” he says. “I’ve got fantastic people working for me [360 of them] and I’m happy to delegate. I like to be closely involved in the initial

Newton Hall hotel, members’ club and wedding venue Duncan Fisher’s Apartment Group acquired Newton Hall in 2008 and it has been operating until recently as a luxury weekend retreat. It is now being restored and extended to create a unique hotel, members’ club and wedding venue which will major on fun, relaxation and quirky originality. “Our slogan is Bold, Romantic and Fantastical, and Newton Hall will be all that,” says Duncan, with a broad smile. “It’ll be grand, stylish (if quirkily so), and beautiful, but it’ll also be a relaxing retreat people won’t want to leave. With 21 rooms and suites, it’ll be a groovy grand retreat in the midst of spectacular Northumbrian coastal countryside. I can’t wait.” Newton Hall is taking bookings for weddings and private memberships now. romantic concept, but then I delegate to really bright people.” At home, meanwhile, life is also simple. Family life is important, and favourite holidays are family trips to the Lake District. “The girls can do five miles up a hill now, no problem,” he says, proudly. “I want to get them into fishing now.” As for everything else in life, “it’s very simple, apart perhaps from brain surgery,” he says. “And that’s how I like it.”

“It’s the simple pleasures of this place that I love,” he says. “We’ve had fantastic weekends up here hanging out on the beach, going for walks”

LET’s GO

Selling or settling down for the foreseeable future, your home’s outdoor spaces deserve just as much attention as the interior, discovers Jane Pikett

t

The aptly named (for a specialist in outdoor living, anyway) Andrew Wood hears too many horror stories from people who’ve spent thousands – sometimes hundreds of thousands – importing improbably tropical species to decorate impossibly outlandish gardens. The result? A garden full of dead stuff. Very expensive dead stuff. “I tend to think it’s a good idea to plant species that will survive. That helps,” says Andrew, Commercial Partner of Newcastle-based outdoor living specialist Hortis Vivo. Hortis Vivo brings together highly experienced horticulturalists and designers who work closely with experts in a variety of specialisms relating to outdoor living. These include areas such as outdoor recreation, dining, relaxation and of course outdoor lighting and design. Tennis courts, swimming pools, water features and the like also form part of our portfolio in helping to create beautiful outdoor living spaces. More and more people are recognising the value of enhancing their outdoor space - and the value of

investing in their green surroundings when they come to sell. Hortis Vivo not only project manage outdoor living developments, it also offers a superior garden maintenance programme. If you invest significantly in your space then you need to protect and nourish your investment with the right help. This is where a good designer comes in. “Yes, there are a number of things you can do to create a quick fix,” says Andrew. “But outdoor space should have longevity. If you want to buy fully grown acacia tress from Japan at £20,000 a piece, you can. Unfortunately, the risk is that they die.” Andrew’s top tip? Use someone who knows horticulture. It sounds obvious, but there is a difference between the qualified horticulturalist and the gardener who does a sterling job cutting the grass and trimming the hedge. “The temptation is to get someone in and just ask for a tidy up,” says Andrew, “but in doing so you can kill off some real hidden gems that could be focal points.” Andrew, who uses the phrase ‘act in haste and repent at leisure’ with regular monotony, advises anyone

who thinks they need a major tidy up to get a horticulturalist in to have a look what’s there first – there can be some absolute gems hiding in there that just beg to be seen. It is also key to understand what plants and species will survive in our local climate. And for a new property, look first to the style of the house and the setting – using that, along with your own taste and personality, to begin your plans. Andrew is one of those instinctive souls – almost a mind reader, really - who after only half an hour or so in your company is starting to get pretty close to what might suit your personality. During our first phone conversation, we fell into talking about my own property – my husband’s childhood home, which we have just taken on. The garden was planted 30 years ago by my late mother-in-law and hasn’t really been thinned out since. It’s a lovely, big country garden but it definitely needs taking in hand. “You’re in danger of just getting someone in for one of those tidy ups people talk about, and you could end up losing some real gems. “First and foremost, gardens are very emotive things. You go in there with a scythe and you could just end up ruining it. If you walk the garden with a horticulturalist, he or she will find out lots about you at the same time as seeing the pieces that need to be nurtured.” At the end of our first phone call, before he’s even seen our garden, Andrew has already worked out much that I didn’t actually know. This he has worked out, quite naturally, simply through conversation, and I am actually quite shocked by how accurately he describes a space that would perfectly suit us and our property. It’s as if he’s known us for years. “The sad thing is, you see too many gardens that simply don’t fit the property or the people,” he says. “It’s about creating a balance, and that means not creating a minimalistic garden for a country cottage. “More and more people understand the value of investing in their outdoor living spaces and the fact that their outside spaces are just as important as their interior design. “This is obviously important when you come to put your home on the market, when good use of lighting, landscape design, outdoor buildings, tennis courts, pools and water features are so important.

“More and more people understand the value of investing in their outdoor living spaces…

“There is only so much you can do to the inside of your property, but the outdoor space is constantly changing through the seasons and evolving over the years. “I love my morning wander around my garden. I find myself wandering around, dead heading and noting how things are progressing. I take something from that every day. It’s very calming, and there are many, many people who have still to discover the pleasures of their own garden.” As mentioned, Andrew relies strongly on his highly attuned intuition. People, he says, tell him so much about themselves, and their tastes, without really knowing it. “Once you have started talking to someone you soon get an idea of what they want and it’s from there that the design process begins,” he says. “I know who to design a minimalist garden for, and I know who to talk to about a country garden. I can

tell pretty quickly when someone wants a statement.” And Andrew is happiest when in the presence of Hortis Vivo’s Horticulturalist, John Taylor. “I’m mesmerised when I hear him talk,” he says. “He talks so easily about plants, his knowledge is amazing and inspiring.” It seems to me that every home – or garden – should have one. The approaching long dark nights are not all doom and gloom. Rosie McGlade

the at

visits one of the region’s top attractions that comes into its own at this time of year

o

ne night in August, after his scheduled talk about the stars and the solar system, Gary Fildes took his Kielder Observatory visitors outside, only to see in the Northumberland night sky the most spectacular display of the Northern Lights he can recall here. “The sky just opened up in front of us with this incredible range of colour. It was just serendipity, awesome,” he recalls. “I couldn’t have timed it better.” Kielder Observatory, currently the region’s number one tourist destination on the online traveler guide Trip

Advisor, is a futuristic, almost space-age building on stilts on Black Fell, about two miles from Kielder Castle. Gary, 45, its founder and director, has loved astronomy since lying down to look up through the branches of his Christmas tree at the fairy lights when he was little in Sunderland. This incredible Observatory is the result of a great life passion that grew from that moment for all things light, mysterious, and twinkling. It’s incredible because it’s the only one in the country where the sky is truly dark, where there is no light

OUT & ABOUT | SY

And as someone who spends his life gazing into outer space, does he think there’s life out there?

pollution at all. And that makes all the difference. “We’ve had people drive up from London for an event and then drive all the way back down when it’s finished,” Gary adds. Not that you get to see the Aurora Borealis here all the time; you have to be pretty lucky for that. They can appear at any time, though naturally you’ve a better chance of seeing them on dark winter nights. But there are other sights that impress equally. “For some, it’s Jupiter or Saturn, for others, it’s being able to look through our telescope and see distant galaxies 500 million light years away. “I’m incredibly passionate about it. I think astronomy is a humbling experience - many people have said the same - but it really does ground you, if you let it in a little bit. It’s an incredible arena in which to practise being a human being, and realise that you are part of something extraordinarily enigmatic and vast.” There are now around 14 events each month, each of which pretty much sells out. There’ll be more Aurora nights during the winter and many others, including Big Universe nights, looking at events from the Big Bang to today. And there are good things to look out for, like an asteroid passing between the Earth and the Moon sometime around November. Any comets? “You can never really tell with the majority of them. These types of phenomena come out of the blue. We could have one next week for all I know.” Events begin at around 7pm or 8pm, and can go on into the early hours if the sky’s doing good things. You arrive, meet Gary and the team, and have a cup of tea. Gary delivers a 40-minute talk with all the passion he has for his subject. If the theme is Northern Lights, as with our visit, he’ll tell you about the folklore and the science. Then the group is split into two and everyone gets a chance to look through telescopes at star clusters, gas clouds, planets, shooting stars, and really distant deep sky objects in other galaxies. It all began with what they call a Star Camp, an American thing Gary had heard of. “It’s where a group of enthusiasts just turn up with tents and beer. They’re huge in America. There was one in Norfolk, but the skies weren’t as clear, so we started our own off. Today they say the Kielder Star Camp is ranked in the world’s top 10 star parties. We still have them twice a year, and anyone is welcome.” And as someone who spends his life gazing into outer space, does he think there’s life out there? “I think the official astronomy line is that there probably is, but at the moment it’s only probably. Personally, I think that finding signs of that life is something that will happen in our lifetime. Even if it’s green slime under a rock, just something to show that life has got a foothold, can you imagine how incredibly exciting that day will be?”

The European Southern Observatory, he adds, is finding all types of earth-like planets just in our own galaxy. “Just visit their website at www.eso.org and key in ‘alien planets’; it’s fascinating reading,” Gary suggests. “These are the ‘Goldilocks’ planets - not too hot and not too cold - where it’s possible that life could be sustained in the same way that it is here. The more our technology improves, the more of these planets we’re finding.” There are around 150 billion stars in our own galaxy, each one like our own sun and surrounded by planets. In our visible universe, there are something like two billion galaxies, each with a similar number of stars. Which goes some way to explaining why so many Kielder Observatory visitors return. There’s no shortage of things to look at out there, and the

coming dark nights only boost the chances of seeing something incredible. Kielder Observatory events, £8 for adults, £6 concessions, www.kielderobservatory.org Gary Fildes tel 07805 638 469 For information on when the Aurora Borealis is most likely to be seen, see www.spaceweather.com

The rental market is thriving at all levels, offering a superb range of homes across city, country and coast, discovers Jane Pikett

t

he North East lettings division of Sanderson Young recently secured a tenant for a prestige property being let for £10,000 per month. Because discretion is crucial in these circumstances, Sanderson Young is not at liberty to divulge who was set to live in the property, though one assumes they will be very comfortable. This is an example – a not uncommon one – of the robust health of the rental market, which has grown in direct proportion to the economic slow-down. Ever pragmatic, we Brits have realised that in today’s market, if you can’t sell – or you’d rather wait for prices to rise again, as they will – you’re better off renting. And so the volume of good quality homes for rent in the region has grown steadily over the last two or three years, allowing Sanderson Young’s lettings division to grow an impressive portfolio of managed properties with it. “Clearly, property prices will rise again in the next two or three years,” says Sanderson Young managing

director Duncan Young. “In the meantime, people have simply realised the obvious – in the current climate it may be preferable to rent. “Renting also allows a flexibility that is absolutely crucial to many people, including footballers and business executives. “There is superb quality of choice of properties to rent now in the middle and at the top end of the market.” Even the hardest to please potential tenant is spoilt for choice in today’s market. Good quality city centre properties are available at £500-£1,000 per month, while in sought-after suburbs and the region’s best rural and coastal spots Sanderson Young has a wide range of properties ranging from £1,500-£10,000 per month. And properties are being snapped up extremely quickly. “People aren’t necessarily aware of how active this market is because they may not see many to let boards or adverts because property goes so fast,” said Duncan Young. “You can literally put a property on the rental market

one day, and it could be gone the next. There are good quality tenants out there who, either for reasons of flexibility or economy, choose to let their property or rent property.” Obviously, it can be more expensive to rent than it is to pay a mortgage, but that does not take into account the economic issues affecting the market. “Simply letting your home while you wait for three years for the market to recover sufficiently for you to sell it at a better price makes economic sense,” adds Duncan Young. “It is a vibrant market at all levels, which means the choice of properties we can offer is the best it has ever been. Corporate clients are able to place their executives in lovely family homes, while leading sports personalities are assured comfort in prestige properties.” Sanderson Young also offers a full range of management services to landlords and many properties in the company’s residential lettings portfolio are fully served with gardeners and cleaners. sanderson Young residential lettings office, high street, Gosforth, Newcastle, offers a comprehensive service to landlords and tenants. f

ew people would credit the economic downturn of the last three years with positive outcomes, but it has heralded a positive change in our national attitude towards renting and letting of residential property. People have come to appreciate that not all homes are selling quickly and letting or renting can make sound economic sense. The turnaround in this sector is now so rapid that Sanderson Young’s regional lettings division often

offers a property to rent one day and secures a quality tenant for it the next. This division has a regionwide reach and a portfolio of quality homes at every level from a rental of £400 per month to £10,000 per month. For those who wish to maximise the value of their property, letting it out is a sound alternative to sale, and for those who value flexibility, renting offers a welcome breather from the ties of property ownership. One wonders why so many of us have never thought of it before...

Turner Square - Morpeth

design t

he Cussins difference is that they have no catalogue of standard designs to be shoe-horned into a site. Instead all the homes on each development are designed to meet the needs of local homebuyers and harmonise with the surrounding landscape and existing architecture. Nor do Cussins sub-contract their building work. Instead the family run company employs their own craftsmen to ensure every home is finished to the highest standards. The success of this philosophy can be seen at their latest developments of Turner Square in Morpeth and Amytis Gardens in South Shields, and the clue to Amytis Gardens’ unique design feature is in the unusual name. Amytis was the Persian queen for whom Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. These legendary gardens were planted around a huge pyramid to remind the queen of her mountain home. The architects of Amytis Gardens paid homage to this romantic legend by placing each new home’s garden on the first floor! Apart from offering an enhanced feeling of security, the raised garden allows each of the 3 and 4 bedroom homes to have garages AND gardens without intruding on the surrounding area’s existing housing. This extraordinary thinking has been recognised with an award from the prestigious Royal Institute of

Chartered Surveyors and short-listing for the LABC Building Excellence Awards. Cussins’ winning formula of blending innovative design with the quality of construction normally associated with traditional house building has been repeated at Turner Square in Morpeth. This development occupies a key site on the old Great North Road and an attractive scheme was essential to enhancing Morpeth’s southern aspect. Equally any new homes built here had to provide the local community with a choice of housing options. Accordingly, Cussins’ architects designed a series of house types specifically to suit the 24 plots available. The designs include affordable 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, spacious 3 bedroom family homes and innovative ‘link-detached’ 4 bedroom executive homes. Link-detached means two properties’ garages share a wall however the main houses are not connected. Both sites have proved extremely popular and most

properties are now sold. However there are still four family homes available at Amytis Gardens (priced from £199,950 to £225,000) and five properties available at Turner Square (one 2 bedroom apartment £149,950, two 3 bedroom houses £169,950 and £194,950 and two 4 bedroom linked detached homes £214,950 each). First time buyers may also be interested to know that Turner Square qualifies for the government’s First Buy scheme that offers an equity loan of up to 20% of the purchase price to help new buyers raise a deposit. Even without FirstBuy, demand for these remaining properties is expected to be extremely high so interested persons should call Sanderson Young on 0191 213 0033 without delay. However, if you do miss out do not despair. Cussins have recently applied for planning permission to build twenty four 3 and 4 bedroom homes (priced £165,000-£250,000) in the Seaton Delaval area so watch this space!

wheels steel Mark Anderson lives to regret a rash promise to join a bike ride. A very long bike ride. Perhaps more training next time?

i

’m a good egg, everyone says so, but sometimes this gets me into a lot of bother. Take a party last year - there was alcohol involved, you understand - when the charming Rosie McGlade persuaded me that cycling from Tynemouth to Edinburgh in aid of the Newcastle-based aid organisation No Strings was an absolutely brilliant idea. Now, I can ride a bike, but haven’t really done so in earnest since the 1970s when I was the proud owner of a purple Raleigh Chopper. Never mind, I thought, with training I’ll be fine. And of course I proceeded to do absolutely nothing for seven months. As sponsorship forms and details of the route circulated I eventually dragged the bike out of the garage to find the tyres flat and the chain rusty. Undaunted, I slipped into some fetching Lycra shorts and embarked on a 10-mile ride, by the end of which my thighs were on fire and the old undercarriage was seriously chafed. In eight weeks’ time I was going to ride 190 miles in the company of men who knock off that sort of distance after a hard day down the pit. Clearly, I was going to need some help. Salvation arrived in the shape of Joe Waugh at M Steel

Cycles in Newcastle. Joe won a gold medal at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 1982 and is a legend in the sport. He kitted me out with a bike and introduced me to Dave Buchan, a ‘body fit’ technician who fits bodies to bikes. My ride was taking in the roads and cycle paths of the Coast & Castles route to Edinburgh, and Dave expertly matched me to a hybrid bike from the Trek range, which has the sturdy frame and handlebars of a mountain bike and the slim wheels of a road model. The difference was phenomenal, and within a few weeks I was regularly riding 20 miles. My confidence rose. And so to the ride; we covered 60 miles from Tynemouth to Seahouses on day one on a beautiful coastal route in kind weather. Things were going well. Then, after breakfast on day two, I hit some sand and gravel and took a serious tumble. By the time we got to Berwick I was really struggling and the last 20 miles to Melrose, by which point we had covered over 120 miles, were torture. Next day it became apparent I had cracked a rib and I had to complete the last 50 miles to Edinburgh in a taxi. In the end, it was clear I hadn’t done anything like enough training, but I’m proud of my achievement. A total of 120 miles in two days is some distance for a beginner and, you never know, I might just do it again. One day. Maybe. For North East cycle routes see www.visitnortheastengland.com

M Steel Cycles operates the government tax-free bike purchase scheme: www.msteelcycles.co.uk Mark and friends raised more than £3,500 for No Strings, the Newcastle-based aid organisation which educates children in the developing world about threats to life using films made by former Muppet puppeteers in New York. No Strings now needs urgent support for a new appeal to extend its disaster preparedness programme helping children survive natural disasters. To support the appeal, see www.nostrings.org.uk

Arthur Wharton, the world’s first black professional footballer, began his career in Darlington FC. His legacy has been taken up by Shaun Campbell. Rosie McGlade meets a man on a passionate mission

THE

i

t’s six months since I last met Shaun Campbell. “There’s LOADS happened since then,” he enthuses. “I was in London yesterday, where a master chocolatier from Belgium made a chocolate statue of Arthur Wharton. “The High Commissioner of Ghana was there and I was shown detailed plans for an Arthur Wharton Stadium for Tema, Ghana. “We also recently did a talk at the House of Commons and presented FA chairman David Bernstein with a maquette in return for their contribution to our campaign, and there was talk of the full-scale statue appearing at Wembley ahead of the Olympic Games. “There are also two documentary teams following us around now, and there’s just been a short film made about Arthur’s time in Darlington.” While Shaun is too modest to take credit for all of this, his is the whirlwind energy leading

it all, inspired by a story he finds little short of heroic. Arthur Wharton was the world’s first black professional footballer. He moved to Darlington from Ghana in 1883, and under the umbrella of Darlington Football Club ran the world’s first 100 yard record in 10 seconds in 1886, wearing pig skin shoes on a shingle track at Stamford Bridge in London. “On top of that, he was a professional cricketer, a British cycling champion, and played both codes of rugby,” Shaun says. “For me, his greatest achievement is that in Victorian England, at a time when football was brutal and the lower classes lived in sickness, deprivation and poverty, he played seven games of football in 10 days to raise money to feed the poor. “He would no doubt have received racist remarks at a time when scientists talked about the black man as inferior.” It is an incredible story which has propelled Shaun into an impassioned campaign to have Arthur Wharton’s achievements celebrated with a statue in Darlington later this year.

“There’s also two documentary teams following us around now, and there’s just been a short film made about Arthur’s time in Darlington”

It’s hard to know where to begin to describe Shaun’s enthusiasm. He has been interviewed on Radio 4 alongside former footballer (England’s first black player) Viv Anderson, now a patron of the Arthur Wharton Foundation set up by Shaun two years ago. He has stood alongside Stevie Wonder at Birmingham’s NEC to address a 14,000 crowd about Wharton, Rio Ferdinand supports the campaign, as do Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs and numerous other stars. Ian Botham turned up in Shaun’s shop, Drum – a beautiful and unusual furniture store in Darlington’s Grange Road - and stripped to his waist, demanding an Arthur Wharton T-shirt in honour of his prowess on the cricket field. Alongside furniture from all over the world, the shop displays pictures of sporting and other celebrities lending support, signed sports shirts and two beautiful bronze maquette statues. One will go to Wembley following a £20,000 donation from the FA, and the other will go to UEFA in Zurich, which donated £17,500. “Isn’t this incredible when you look round and think about it, really,” Shaun says, genuinely amazed by the support the campaign has generated. “It will be the first statue of a black footballer in this country, which will in part honour the contribution to football of so many black people who have made it here since.” Wharton left Ghana in West Africa to study as a

PROFILE | SY

Methodist preacher at Darlington’s Cleveland College. He was spotted by Manny Hebron, then trainer of Darlington FC, and played in the town until 1888. He died an alcoholic in a sanatorium in 1930 and his body lay in an unmarked grave in Edlington near Doncaster until 1997 when the body Football Unites, Racism Divides funded a headstone. In 1886, The Northern Echo led a campaign for Arthur Wharton to play for England, but it was 91 years before Viv Anderson donned an England shirt. Shaun has spent the day before our interview with Paul Canoville, Chelsea’s first black player who was greeted with racist jeers by the team’s own fans when he first set foot on the pitch in 1982. The two visited Feetham’s -Darlington’s old ground, which has stood empty since 2003. “It was emotional for both of us,” Shaun says. “The old pitch – the one Arthur Wharton played on was covered in litter and needles. The site was bequeathed to the town by a benefactor who requested it was always available for recreational purposes, but now they’re wanting to build a housing estate on it.” In some ways the real jolt is how far this country has come since Wharton’s day and there are now so many black players wearing the England shirt. For Shaun, a permanent statue of Wharton is the most fitting tribute.

“It’s a piece of public art, and celebration of this particular achiever in history,” he says. “In Warwick, there’s a statue of Randolph Turpin, who was an amazing boxer who beat the great Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951. There’s a statue in London of Nelson Mandela and one of a black woman holding aloft a child - a symbol of the achievements of the black who came here from the West Indies in the Windrush years, of which my father was one.” Does he ever tire? “No, I really don’t . I feel I have a responsibility now. I give lots of talks around the country to children and various groups, and they are so inspired by what I can tell them. That’s what keeps me going. “I believe we have a responsibility to protect the rich football heritage of this country, the founding nation of football, and Arthur Wharton has a very important part in that story.” For more information on the Arthur Wharton Foundation, see www.arthurwharton.com

“It was emotional for both of us,” Shaun says. “The old pitch was covered in litter and needles, the same pitch Arthur Wharton first played on here in Darlington

olomo does not quite live in the sticks, but once you leave the main road and pass over the Crinan Canal, the roads become narrower, the trees closer, the sense of leaving mainstream urban life is more pronounced. Rumble into Tayvallich with its pretty harbour, take a couple of turns and twists through hills and over a small stone bridge and Morrison’s home and studio looms into view. A sign denotes that he lives and works here, but that the place is private, though the artist himself appears anything but guarded. Rather, this phenomenally successful artist, lay preacher, father and philanthropist is friendly and welcoming. Morrison, who is famed for his vividly expressionist landscapes, is sparky and loquacious, quick to smile and laugh. This personal warmth, along with the vitality of his landscapes and his Christian faith, have led some, he says, to paint a picture of “jolly Jolomo”. That fictional soul effortlessly knocks out several pictures a day – of crofts and fields, hens and moons, beaches and distant gauzy mountains – smiling benignly all the while before dashing off some charity work, writing a sermon or two, and picking up awards and commendations on his way. The truth is, as ever, more complex. A former art teacher, Morrison turned to painting full time in 1997, a decision that has amply paid off. He

of sells £2m-worth of his work each year, though half this income goes to galleries and more to taxes, the Church and charities. People love his work, he says, for its vitality. “They wake up on a Monday morning, they have to go to work and the paintings cheer them up. Do they cheer me up? Yes. I cannot wait to paint every day. Nothing in this world would stop me.” He rises daily at 7.30am, eats, goes to the studio, reads some scriptures and says a short prayer for his family. “I always commit the work I do in the day to God,” he explains. Then he checks his emails and sets up his work for the day. It is a family business: his wife Maureen, a former nurse, runs the office and looks after the images (Jolomo photographs his paintings). Their sons, Calum, Peter and Simon also help, particularly with framing. His work is fluid, and done fast. His painting has not always been so free and bold, or featured the wild slashes of light and colour that his collectors and fans love so much now. When he was at school, he would paint “like it was a photograph”. Later, as a student at the Glasgow School of Art from 1967 to 1971, he could have become a hyper-realist. “But I like to be free,” he says. He traces his love of the countryside to his childhood and frequent holidays to the family hut in Carbeth, and stories from his father’s family croft in north Harris. Morrison now has a house and studio on Mull. “I’m a

painter, and I love the land,” he says. “We have been here in Tayvallich for 40 years and I don’t get tired of the views. I love the rain, I love a storm. I love the snow as well as blue skies and sunshine. Those things resonate with me.” John Lowrie Morrison, in conjunction with The Corymella Scott Gallery, is selling a collection of paintings entitled Visions of the Western Isles from November 21-27 2011 at The Sage Gateshead. Artist Wilson Smith is sellng his life’s work to help fund research into the disease that killed his wife. Rosie McGlade meets him at his Northumberland home

t

here’s something very gentlemanly about Wilson Smith, very likeable, and something extremely refined about his beautiful home. And yet by choice he sleeps in his studio, just in case the mood to paint takes hold during the night. His home is full of his work, but his paintings are all going, for charity, because his beloved wife died three years ago and it seems the natural thing to do. If he misses them, he can always paint more. “Painting is what I do,” he says. “Sometimes I jump out of bed and have a look at one of them, maybe make a change. Pretty strange,” he laughs, “but it’s sort of my life’s thing at the moment.” Wilson has been painting since he was knee high, he

says. He’s now 78, and is now been selling his work to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of his wife Jean. Alzheimer’s is complex to understand for anyone who hasn’t been close to it, which is why one particular painting here is so instructive, and perhaps why, out of so many in his home, it demands your attention. It shows an old lady who looks lost, yet somehow aware at the same time, and clearly frightened. The feeling of isolation it leaves you with is shocking, like a lived nightmare, and it makes you feel deeply compassionate. Not all Wilson’s paintings are dark - far from it. There are children on the steps of the British Museum, ballet dancers, a collection of beautiful nudes, still lifes, rivers

and country scenes, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, huge, interesting abstracts, all oils on canvas and all of them beautifully done. There’s a collection of five paintings in the style of Toulouse-Lautrec, which will sell together to form an exciting acquisition for any collector. Wilson originally painted them for his own wood-panelled dining room, capturing the techniques, brush strokes and colour palette of the French master to create canvases hard to tell apart from Toulouse-Lautrec’s own. “I just paint what I like,” he says, making it sound so simple. “That’s the whole point. If I see something I like, I just paint it. I think it’s the way a painter should be, really.” We’re in the large, sunny extension the Smith family added after moving to their 17th Century Northumberland home in 1994, and there are paintings everywhere, more than 50 of them, about to go on sale. The painting of the woman with Alzheimer’s hangs above us. Jean? “Not anyone specific, no,” Wilson responds gently, “just a person I had in my mind as I was working. I would often ask Jean to sit for me, but she never liked the idea. “The experience of the condition really affected me. This woman I’ve painted obviously doesn’t know where she is. She’s in a bit of a state; you can see from her eyes that she’s lost, which is what Alzheimer’s people are. “When you see someone dying in front of you it sets off the need to do something, however small, to help somehow. On June 16 2008 I saw my wife die in front of me, and from that day on I felt I had really got to do something. “She was such an intelligent woman, and to see someone like that die in that way is dreadful. And it’s affected me every day since. Even when I’m painting I think of my wife. “Over the seven years she had Alzheimer’s she lost a piece of her life every month or so, until she could no longer walk or talk. At the end, she couldn’t eat or drink. It was dreadful.

“I thought, something has to be done, and the only thing I could do was paint really. I’m privileged to be able to do that.” Wilson’s talents were evident from an early age, his first commission a mural in his primary school in Epping, where he grew up, and at the age of 11, during the air raids of the Second World War, he was presented to Winston Churchill as a talented young artist. He studied art and design before entering National Service in 1950 where he trained RAF recruits, and

where he was commissioned to paint the Queen. On leaving National Service, Wilson worked on leading advertising and design accounts in London, and then moved to Northumberland, setting up his own family business, Smith Creative, in Newcastle, in which both his wife and his two sons have worked. Alzheimer’s research is an area that’s grossly underfunded, Wilson feels. “I was lucky in that I was able to care for my wife for five years, but she kept falling. She was in specialised care for the last two years. “I remember talking to the doctor and she said to me, ‘I don’t know how to treat this’. There was nothing they could give her. All they could do was make sure she was as safe as they could. That’s why more research is so vitally needed.” Dementia should not be thought of as a normal part of ageing – it is caused by brain diseases, of which Alzheimer’s is the most common form. Symptoms can include the gradual loss of memory, communication skills and the ability to think and reason clearly. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, there are 820,000 people across the UK living with dementia today, including 4,000 in Northumberland alone, with numbers forecast to rise substantially in the next generation. The only way to help reduce its impact on sufferers it through research, and yet investment lags far behind that of other serious diseases. Miranda Mays, Community Fundraising Manager, says the charity has been deeply touched by Wilson’s contribution. “We rely entirely on supporters like Wilson, and his incredibly generous gesture, to fund our world-class research.” Contact Wilson Smith via Alzheimer’s Research uK, tel 01223 843 899

Jane Pikett dreams of a life when she can drive Bentley’s new Continental GT every day

a

press release has just landed on my desk heralding the launch of the Bentley Collection - a small, limited-edition range of exclusive leather goods, “crafted to enhance the seamless link of quality and design between driver and machine”. I like that - “crafted to enhance the seamless link of quality and design between driver and machine”. I wish I’d come up with that, whizzing along the A69 on my daily commute in my Volvo estate, complete with dog hairs and muddy wellies. No doubt, if I drove a Bentley every day I would come up with such fulsome prose with ease. Certainly, the mere thought of the new Continental GTC is enough

to bring out the Pulitzer Prize winner in anyone. Obviously, Bentley cars are in a league all of their own; icons of motoring of which the Continental GT is a deserved star – a classic Bentley melded with contemporary design and modern technology. This car fuses supercar performance and handcrafted luxury, and its latest incarnation benefits from increases in power, torque and fuel efficiency. Indeed, the Continental GT’s engine is renowned as one of the

most technologically advanced of its kind. This thing can run on the latest environmentally sustainable bio-fuels and is even faster than its predecessor due to a significantly increased power output. Gear change times have also been reduced by a stunning 50 per cent and this model launches to 60mph in just 4.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 198mph (though not when I’m driving it, m’lud). The coupé’s wide, low-sprung appearance not only looks good, its width means it sits aggressively low to the road, allowing stability at all speeds and in all circumstances, even when I’m driving it. State-of-the-art suspension, including something called Intelligent Continuous Damping Control, constantly monitors the car’s attitude and poise, while one of the world’s most advanced all-wheel-drive systems ensures that all the power the 12-cylinder engine generates is utilised. A combination of touch-screen controls and classic rotary switches offers crystal-clear feedback and the touch-screen navigation technology, audio system and telephone are comfortably at your fingertips. That audio system is, as you might expect, an industry leader, continuing the skilful blend of heritage styling and contemporary excellence. The new GT profile is characteristic of the marque, feauring a classic Bentley matrix radiator grille, jewel-effect headlights and distinctive rear floating LED lamps.

State-of-the-art suspension, including something called Intelligent Continuous Damping Control, constantly monitors the car’s attitude and poise… The flared tailpipes drive home the Continental GT’s sporting credentials, while its interior designers have skilfully evolved the car’s cabin to produce a stylish and cocooning space. The distinctive ‘cobra’ design seats boast the latest body-supporting materials, front-seat ventilation and a state-of-the-art massage system, and there is a host of beautiful leather hide options, veneers, engine-spun metal fascias and paint colours to choose from.

Oh, and you can now invest in a host of accessories to complement your new car, including Bentley sunglasses in a range of materials from fine wood to Asian water buffalo horn and made-to-order 18ct white, yellow and rose gold. A snip, with prices starting at around £7,000. Now then, where’s my chequebook? The Bentley Continental GT starts at around £135,000 on the road. See www.bentleymotors.com for more details
