Biden and Trump agree to June and September presidential debates

Joe Biden and Donald Trump have agreed to participate in two televised presidential debates in June and September.

CNN announced the 27 June event on Tuesday, and said it would take place in the key swing state of Georgia.

A second debate on 10 September will be hosted by ABC.

The announcement came shortly after Mr Biden laid out his terms for taking on former President Trump in a debate ahead of November's election.

No audience will attend the June debate in Atlanta, CNN said, while moderators will be announced at a later date.

ABC has yet to announce more details on the debate it is hosting.

Alice Munro dies at 92

Canadian author Alice Munro, a 2013 Nobel Prize winner for literature, has died at the age of 92. Munro wrote short stories for more than 60 years, often focusing on life in rural Canada. She died at her home in Port Hope, Ontario on Monday night, her family and her publisher have confirmed. Munro was often compared to Russian writer Anton Chekhov for the insight and compassion found in her stories. "Alice Munro is a national treasure - a writer of enormous depth, empathy, and humanity whose work is read, admired, and cherished by readers throughout Canada and around the world," Kristin Cochrane, the CEO of Penguin Random House Canada, said in a statement.

US plans $1 bn Israel arms delivery despite Rafah assault: Reports

Washington: (IANS/DPA) The United States is planning a new arms delivery to Israel worth more than $1 billion, local media reported. US President Joe Biden's administration has informed Congress of this, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the package contains tank ammunition, tactical vehicles and mortar shells.

According to other US media reports, the government has also initiated the

authorisation process in Congress, which is still at an early stage, according to television channel CNN.

The US government is currently withholding delivery of so-called heavy bombs due to Israel's actions in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

New Delhi: (IANS) Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President's Special Representative for Afghanistan, held talks with J.P. 6,600 evacuated in wildfire-hit Canada

Ottawa: (IANS) Up to 6,600 residents have been evacuated in Canada's western province of Alberta due to a raging wildfire, local media reported. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo issued the evacuation order Tuesday afternoon after declaring a state of local emergency, CBC News reported.

The evacuation order is in effect for the neighbourhoods of Beacon Hill, Abasand, Prairie Creek and Grayling Terrace. Several areas in Fort McMurray are being evacuated to make way for firefighters, Xinhua news agency reported.

14 People Given Citizenship Certificates

For The First Time Under CAA

New Delhi: The first set of citizenship certificates to 14 people was issued under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA today, nearly two months after the Centre notified it, initiating the process of granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Under the CAA, the qualification period of citizenship application has been reduced from 11 to 5 years for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and

S Jaishankar Responds To US Sanction Warning Over Chabahar Port Deal

Varanasi (UP): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday rejected the affidavit of comedian Shyam Rangeela, who filed his nomination from Varanasi as an Independent candidate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the poll panel's website, out of 55 candidates, the forms of 36 nominees were rejected while the affidavits of 15 candidates, including PM Modi and Congress' Ajay Rai, were accepted. Shyam Rangeela had filed his nomination as an Independent candidate from Varanasi on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy. "This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days," the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. "This is not early; it's close to the normal date," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.

Israel Disappointed by Biden's Warning

Jerusalem: Israel's ambassador to the United Nations expressed disappointment Thursday at US President Joe Biden's threat to stop certain arms supplies to Israel if it invades the crowded Gaza city of Rafah.

"This is a difficult and very disappointing statement to hear from a president to whom we have been grateful since the beginning of the war," Gilad Erdan told Israeli public broadcaster Kan radio, in Israel's first reaction to Biden's warning. Israel has defied international objections by sending in tanks and conducting "targeted raids" in the border city, which it says is home to Hamas's last remaining battalions -- but is also crowded with displaced Palestinian civilians.

The flight and passengers were ordered to return to place of origin, Dubai. The passengers left Kingston on May 7,” he said.

Amazon Invests Rs 1,600 Crore in Indian Arm amid E-commerce Competition

New Delhi:(IANS) E-commerce giant Amazon has pumped Rs 1,600 crore into its India arm, Amazon Seller Services, a regulatory filing by the company has shown. The investment comes as India’s e-commerce growth is expected to reach $200-230 billion by 2030, a steady 20-22 per cent rise.

This is the second time when the e-commerce giant has infused money into Amazon Seller Services this year.

Recently, Walmart invested $600 million into homegrown rival Flipkart.

The e-commerce war in the country has intensified as India, a growing economy, is set to add a new user base of almost 210 million shoppers by 2030 from the current 240 million users.

Most of these new users are expected to be from tier 2 and beyond cities, according to market research firm Redseer.

A global consortium led by top private equity (PE) firm Blackstone, along with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Singapore's GIC, have submitted the bid last week for up to 76 per cent stake in Haldiram's Snacks Food, according to reports.

New Delhi: India's renowned food, sweet and snacks chain Haldiram's is up for grabs as a global group of investors has reportedly submitted a non-binding bid to acquire a controlling stake worth $8.5 billion in the company that was founded in Bikaner, Rajasthan in 1937.

A global consortium led by top private equity (PE) firm Blackstone, along with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Singapore's GIC, have submitted the bid last week for up to 76 per cent stake in Haldiram's Snacks Food, according to reports.

Both Haldiram's as well as the global consortium are yet to confirm the development.

The food chain is the combined packaged snacks and foods business of the Delhi and Nagpur factions of the Agarwal family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attacked the Congress, accusing it of indulging in "shameful" politics and plotting to send "Ram Lala to tent" again.

Indian Army veteran on UN assignment killed in Gaza attack

United Nations, May 14 (IANS) An Indian security official with the UN, killed in an attack on his vehicle, became the first foreigner working for the world organisation killed during the current Gaza official, according to a UN source.

Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale (retd) had started working a month ago as a security coordinator for the UN Department of Safety and Security

(DSS) in Gaza on Monday, the UN official told IANS.

Kale was a 46-year-old father of two teenage children who had retired from the Army and joined the UN, the official said.

He joins the roster of more than 200 Indians who have died in the service of the UN. The majority of them - 179 - are peacekeepers but many other Indian civilians, who like employees of the DSS are not peacekeepers, have died working for the UN in various capacities in trouble spots.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for a full investigation, his spokesperson Farhan Haq said. He said that the DSS staffers were in the vehicle, with clear UN markings, that was in a convoy engaged in "their regular work (for which) they go to different locations to assess security conditions. And this was the European Hospital in Rafah".

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has total assets worth over Rs. 3 crore, but owns no land, houses or cars, he has said in his election affidavit. The Prime Minister filed his nomination from the Varanasi constituency on Tuesday. In the affidavit, PM Modi had declared total assets worth Rs. 3.02 crore, the bulk of which is made up of a fixed deposit worth Rs. 2.86 crore with the State Bank of India. His total cash in hand is Rs.52,920 and he has Rs. 80,304 in two bank accounts in Gandhinagar and Varanasi.

On April 17, 2023, an air cargo container carrying more than 22 million Canadian dollars worth of gold bars and foreign currency was stolen from a secure storage facility using fake paperwork, Peels Regional Police said.

The gold and currency had arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

Last month, two persons of Indian origin - Parmpal Sidhu, 54, and Amit Jalota, 40 -- both from Ontario, were arrested in connection with the case along with Ammad Chaudhary, 43, Ali Raza, 37, and Prasath Paramalingam, 35.

Besides, Canada-wide warrants were issued for Simran Preet Panesar, 31, from Brampton, who was also an Air Canada employee at the time of the theft and Arsalan Chaudhary, a 42-year-old man from Mississauga, the statement said.

Mumbai Hit by Dust Storm, First Rain, Airport Affected

Mumbai witnessed the first rains of the season, accompanied by a massive duststorm which turned the sky dark around 3 pm today. Rainfall brought relief to the residents of Mumbai and its adjoining area from heat but the skyline of the metropolitan was encircled by dusty winds.

The sudden change in weather brought traffic to a standstill as commuters took shelter during the storm.

Strong winds and rain were witnessed in the Ghatkopar, Bandra Kurla, Dharavi area of Mumbai. Landing and takeoff operations at the Mumbai airport, one of the busiest airports in the country, were temporarily suspended, officials said. The airport authority in an update said the operations resumed at 5:03 pm and it witnessed 15 flight diversions during the storm. The Mumbai Airport last week completed its pre-monsoon runway maintenance successfully, ensuring safe and smooth aircraft operations.

“Mothers believe that increased screen time affects their studies and has a negative impact on the mental and physical health of their children,” the report said.

New Delhi: A whopping 89 per cent of Indian mothers are concerned about the screen time of their children, according to a report on Sunday.

The report, released by market research firm Techarc on Mother’s Day, is based on a survey of 600 working mothers, across four metro cities, having at least one child between grade 3-10 in school.

It explores insights on the digital ecosystem in which mothers operate today viz-a-viz the challenges, concerns, interests, and preferences.

“Mothers believe that increased screen time affects their studies and has a negative impact on the mental and physical health of their children,” the report said. Further, the report showed that privacy (81 per cent), inappropriate content (72 per cent), teenage influencers (45 per cent), deep fakes, and impersonation (26 per cent) were other top concerns bothering mothers. Mothers feel that deep fakes and Gen AI will add to their future parenting worries as they get to see the rising cases along with learning how these can be negatively used to malign the reputation and credibility of individuals. Among the devices, mothers are concerned about the expected popularity of VR headsets, especially after the launch of Apple Vision Pro.

Mothers believe that “this form factor will zone out their children who will lose attentiveness towards the environment adding to their distractions,” the report said. On the other hand, mothers also found the digital world much more useful and relevant for children, compared to five years ago.

More than 60 per cent of the mothers spent 51-85 per cent on their children through digital mediums buying various goods and services. Nearly 20 per cent of digital savvy mothers spent more than 85 per cent, the report said. Mothers’ most trusted digital partners include Amazon (for shopping), Swiggy (for food), and Disney Hotstar (for entertainment)

cereals, and millets and up to 15 per cent of calories from pulses, beans and meat. The rest of the calories should come from nuts, vegetables, fruits and milk. Total fat intake should be less than or equal to 30 per cent energy, the guidelines said. Due to the limited availability and high cost of pulses and meat, a significant proportion of the Indian population relies heavily on cereals, resulting in poor intake of essential macronutrients (essential amino acids and essential fatty acids) and micronutrients, it stated. Low intake of essential nutrients can disrupt metabolism and increase the risk of insulin resistance and associated disorders from a young age. Estimates show that 56.4 per cent of the total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets, it said. Healthy diets and physical activity can reduce a substantial proportion of coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension (HTN) and prevent up to 80 per cent of type 2 diabetes."A significant proportion of premature deaths can be averted by following a healthy lifestyle," it said, adding that the upsurge in the consumption of highly processed foods laden with sugars and fats, coupled with reduced physical activity and limited access to diverse foods, aggravated micronutrient deficiencies and obesity.

Eating ultra-processed foods may shorten your lifespan, cause early death: Study

Love to binge on packaged baked goods and snacks, fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, and ready-to-eat or heat foods? Beware, it can cut short your lifespan and raise the risk of early death, according to a 30-year-long study published in the journal The BMJ on Thursday.

The risk is because ultra-processed foods often contain colours, emulsifiers, flavours, and other additives and are typically high in energy, added sugar, saturated fat, and salt, but lack vitamins and fibre -- leading to poor health, and raising the risk of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, which can further raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

For the study, an international team of researchers including from the US, Brazil, and China, tracked the long-term health of 74,563 female registered nurses from 11 US states between 1984 and 2018; and 39,501 male health professionals from all 50 US states from 1986 to 2018 with no history of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes.

The results revealed that eating an average of 7 servings per day of ultraprocessed foods caused a 4 per cent higher risk of total deaths and a 9 per cent higher risk of other deaths, including an 8 per cent higher risk of neurodegenerative deaths.

The rate of death from any cause among participants in this group was 1,536 per 100,000 person-years.

Further, eating meat, poultry, and seafood-based ready-to-eat products showed the strongest risk of early death, followed by sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages, dairy-based desserts, and ultra-processed breakfast food.

Even though this is an observational study, so no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, “the findings provide support for limiting consumption of certain types of ultra-processed food for long-term health,” said the researchers.

“Future studies are warranted to improve the classification of ultra-processed foods and confirm our findings in other populations,” they added.

Indian American Dentist Convicted in Patient's Opioid Death

CRESCENT SPRINGS, KY- An Indian American dentist, Dr. Jay M. Sadrinia, 61, residing in Villa Hills, was sentenced to 20 years in prison today for his illegal prescription of opioids, including morphine, resulting in the death of one of his patients.

Evidence presented during trial and documented in court files revealed that Dr. Sadrinia owned and managed dental clinics in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. Despite clear indications, such as notes within his patients’ charts indicating substance abuse disorders, Sadrinia continued to prescribe potent opioids for routine dental procedures. His unlawful prescription of morphine to a particular patient tragically led to her demise. Charging an exorbitant sum of $37,000 for dental services, Sadrinia also provided the patient with medically unnecessary amounts of narcotics, including morphine. Regrettably, the patient succumbed to a fatal overdose of morphine several days later.

FBI's Elder Fraud Report Highlights Tech Support and Investment Scams

The FBI's annual Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) Elder Fraud report reveals that tech support fraud was the most commonly reported scheme affecting older Americans in 2023, with over 17,600 complaints. Perpetrators impersonate tech support representatives to gain remote access to victims' devices and sensitive information.

Investment fraud topped the list in reported losses, amounting to approximately $1.2 billion. This category encompasses various financial crimes, including Ponzi schemes and market manipulation fraud. In Maryland, prevalent scams included tech support, personal data breaches, and investment fraud, with losses totaling over $72.4 million. South Jersey Outdoor Spaces Temporarily Closed

Several outdoor spaces in South Jersey, known for attracting harmful activities, will temporarily close for the summer, officials announced. Effective from May 23 to Sept. 2, access to Cedar Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) - Sand Plant Area, Menantico Ponds WMA - Area 1, Area 2, and Area 3, and Winslow WMA - Winslow East (Hot Mix) Area will be prohibited. The decision follows past instances of unauthorized activities like swimming, off-road vehicle use, and illegal parking. The closures aim to address safety and resource protection concerns observed in previous summers. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) expressed regret over the need for closures but affirmed their commitment to public safety. NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Conservation Police may close or limit access to any Wildlife Management Area if illegal activities occur. These areas are set to reopen on Sept. 3. Washington Field Office is sounding the alarm on a scam aimed at Chinese communities across the United States and students attending U.S. universities. This deceptive scheme involves criminals posing as law enforcement officials from China to manipulate victims into paying up to avoid false accusations or deportation.

“These fraudsters disguise themselves as Chinese investigators, instilling fear in their victims and exploiting it to extort money,” explained Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg of the FBI Washington Field Office.

“The complexity of this scam, involving multiple layers and perpetrators, makes it particularly convincing. Our aim is to inform Chinese communities about this threat, empowering potential victims to report such incidents.”

The scam operates in four distinct phases:

• Initial Contact: Perpetrators reach out to victims, often masquerading as representatives from U.S. businesses or Chinese diplomatic entities. They initiate conversations under the pretext of minor issues like overdue

bills or unclaimed packages.

• Scare Tactics: Victims are transferred to another scammer impersonating a Chinese law enforcement officer. Using fabricated documents such as arrest warrants, they intimidate victims with details of alleged crimes, sometimes threatening extradition or arrest.

• Surveillance: Victims are coerced into consenting to 24/7 audio and video monitoring, instructed not to discuss the case or conduct online searches. Scammers might even attempt to recruit victims for

• Extortion: The final phase involves directing victims to wire money to a Chinese bank account to supposedly prove innocence or secure bail. Scammers may provide instructions or scripts for victims to follow during bank transactions and may even coerce victims into deceiving friends and family to extract more money.

• Protective Measures:

• Refrain from divulging personal or financial information or sending

money if contacted by unknown individuals accusing you of a crime. Cease communication immediately.

• Be cautious of seemingly official phone numbers, as scammers can spoof them using technology.

• Verify the legitimacy of any contact from a U.S. government agency by independently confirming their contact details and reaching out directly.

• Never consent to continuous audio or video surveillance.

• If contacted by someone claiming to be a Chinese authority, reach out to your local FBI office for verification, as legitimate foreign law enforcement activities in the U.S. must be coordinated with federal authorities.

Victims should promptly report any fraudulent or suspicious activities to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center via ic3.gov, providing as much transactional information as possible. Additionally, if money has already been transferred, contact your financial institution immediately to halt or reverse the transaction. Raise awareness among students by reporting such incidents to campus security or public safety offices.

The event kicked off with the Auspicious Lamp Lighting Ceremony featuring Hon Deputy Council General Madan Ghildiyal, State Representative Candidate Narendra Reddy, Forsyth County Council Candidate Sudhir Aggarwal, Atlanta Chapter President Shiv Aggarwal, and Pandit Upadhyaya. It began with a soulful Ganesh Vandana, setting the tone for the evening’s musical journey. Students from KalashramUSA performed Thumri – “Aavat Shyam,” a very special composition written, composed, and sung by the Legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj and choreographed by Anurag Sharma.

Audiences were captivated by a series of mesmerizing performances by the talented Ekal singers. From classics like “Mere Hivde Mein” to evergreen hits like “O Mere Dil Ke Chain” and “Jaaiye Aap Kahan Jayenge,” the audience

was swept away by the nostalgia of old melodies. The pace picked up with energetic numbers like those from Daler Mehndi, culminating in joyous Garba on “Pankhida.”

Indian American Lawyer Questions $200K Salary Amid Judgeship Bid

Lawyer Hemalee Patel is facing objections after announcing her candidacy for a judgeship in Brooklyn’s civil court. The reason? Patel has taken a leave of absence while pursuing her new role. However, she continues to receive payroll checks as a lawyer for the Board of Elections. Patel makes about $200,000 a year and with this she will remain on the payroll and collect a check while using her ‘vacation’ or ‘annual leave’ time. Soon as the news came out, her campaign saw objections and her nomination petitions were called into question.

Patel has announced her candidacy for a judgeship in Brooklyn’s civil court. This is not the first time that Patel is eyeing the judgeship. In 2017 too Patel ran for judge seeking to become Brooklyn’s first judge of South Asian descent at the time.

Patel came to the U.S. as a five-yearold with her parents from India. The family settled in Queens, New York. After graduating from New York University, Patel then attended Brooklyn Law School and has been there ever since 1988.

During an interview for her upcoming sci-fi thriller titled Atlas, which is all set to release on Netflix on May 24, 2024, she told News18, when asked about her favorite Indian actor, “I love Dev Patel. [I just] love his work. Every time I see his work, I am just blown away. He is just so emotionally available, he’s so real and truthful. [His eyes] are so engaging it just brings you in.”
