U Chris Alexander, Canada's citizenship and immigration minister NEW DELHI: A delegation of 150 Canadians is expected in Ahmedabad next week to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat summit from January 10-12. “Canada is proud to participate in the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit,” said Chris Alexander, Canada’s citizenship and immigration minister and head of the Canadian delegation. “This summit allows us to further strengthen ties between Canada and India by highlighting business opportunities, sharing experiences and trading ideas.” Canada has dramatically increased its focus on India in recent years building on shared values of democracy and pluralism by steadily increasing trade and investment ties. There are over 300 Canadian companies with a physical presence in India and more than one million Canadians claiming Indian

Defense minister Manohar Parrikar, finance minister Arun Jaitley and chief ministers from half a dozen states will also attend the event, which is likely to see deliberations on framing new industrial and investment-related policies. Modi will ask global companies to join the government’s flagship ‘Make in India’ programme during the two-day summit. The Prime Minister will also host a dinner for visiting guests at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University in Gandhinagar. This is the seventh summit organized by the Gujarat government. It was launched in 2003 by the then chief minister Narendra Modi. The summit has helped the state in attracting large-scale investments in various sectors. US carmaker Ford Motors and Japanese auto giant Suzuki are building their factories with combined investments of close to Rs 8,000 crore.

S Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representatives, feels the relationship between India and the US has been energized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit and wants the two governments to work closely in countering terrorism, including cyber terrorism. “Terrorism is an enemy and a threat that doesn’t wear one country’s uniform or owe allegiance to one country’s flag, but rather exists in many different parts of the world. In order to defeat this threat, we (India and the US) will have to work together,” Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representative, told IANS in an interview during a visit to the capital. “..And that includes the government and leadership of Pakistan taking a stronger stand and action against these terrorists,” Gabbard added. She hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama, during his visit here for the Jan 26 Republic Day celebrations, would discuss the urgency to press upon Pakistan the

Noting that Modi’s maiden visit to the US in September “energized the relationship between the two countries”, Gabbard said he had come with “a very clear vision and a plan to achieve his objective of where he would like to take India”. She said Modi’s vision struck a chord not just with the Indian diaspora but generated interest “from people involved with politics, in the private sector and those who are looking to participate in what appears to be a very exciting time here in India”. Gabbard, who was in India between Dec 16, 2014, and Jan 3, 2015, and met with Modi, Defense Minster Manohar Parrikar and Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar among a host of other leaders, said she always nurtured a special place for the land of Lord Krishna’s birth and hoped for greater understanding and respect for each others’ culture, traditions, and distinct style of doing business. Gabbard was born into a multicultural and multi-religious family of parents with Samoan and European roots. Fourth among five siblings, Gabbard embraced Hinduism as a teenager and became a student of the Bhagavad Gita.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 2015 Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on January 7, Sushma Swaraj, who is also the External Affairs Minister, urged the diaspora youth to contribute to

the country’s development. “We want you, the Pravasis, to contribute to the development of India. We want you to participate in the vision that Prime Minister Modi has for India's future,” she said and enumerated the several programmes launched by the government, including the Make in India, Smart Cities, Swachch Bharat, and Skill India. She said the government has been working in mission mode to implement all these programmes. “You can contribute to them and become an active partner in these ventures. Our government is fully

committed to good governance, efficiency, accountability, transparency, and speedy decision-making.” The minister, addressing the diaspora youth at the Mahatma Mandir complex, said there are “tremendous opportunities today for you to join us, especially in the fields of manufacturing, infrastructure development, education, health, skills development, science and technology, research and innovation, knowledge economy and youth development as part of our effort to realize India's full potential”.

Describing the diaspora as “the most significant example of India's soft power”, Sushma Swaraj said the diaspora has “retained a bit of India” in their hearts. Though living thousands of miles away, you have “kept the spirit of Bharat alive”. The minister said the PBD is “an occasion to reflect upon your heritage, and to touch base with a country which will always consider you as one of its own, regardless of the colour of your passport or the land of your citizenship”. Such a session was being held for the first time and would help address their concerns. The session would help Indian expatriates voice their concerns about labour, employment etc. The session on the Francophone diaspora would see members from Mauritius, Reunion Island and Guadeloupe among others air their concerns.

ll the top luxury hotels in Delhi have been scanned, the security is being worked out to the last minute detail, and, yes, The Beast will very much be part of the official entourage of US President Barack Obama, chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade. It is learnt that an advance US security team would be in India around Jan 15 to fine-tune the security arrangements for Obama, the world’s most powerful leader. Though Obama visited India in 2010, the security this time would be more challenging as the US president would be seated in the open air on Rajpath for more than two hours to watch the Republic Day parade. In view of threats by Islamist militants after Washington launched air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the security scenario has gained additional importance. A US Secret Service team would be in India next week to scour the luxury hotel where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay. US authorities have examined the top hotels in the capital including the two Taj hotels and Maurya Sheraton but nothing has been finalized, it is learnt. An idea of what Delhi can expect can be had from what transpired at the Marriott in Bris-

Obama’s security ordered the stripping of an entire floor of the Marriott Hotel — clearing out the furniture and investigating every nook and corner. Security personnel removed bedding and furniture, including mirrors, from rooms. Other rooms were left with just desks and chairs as part of elaborate efforts to ensure Obama is not spied on.

The rooms were swept for bugs so that Obama can conduct confidential business and make private phone calls from within the hotel. US security agencies set up their own secure communications. The hotel was cordoned off and only those with accreditation were let in. Hundreds of staffers accompanying Obama occupied a number of floors at the hotel. Obama had traveled with a special portable security tent which could be set up in hotel rooms to allow him to exam-

ine classified material and hold talks. Obama reached Brisbane airport on board Air Force One and took off in his helicopter Marine One for Victoria Park. From there, he went in a cavalcade of 30 cars to Marriott. The chopper was accompanied by an advance team of three twin-rotor Ospreys and three other presidential helicopters. The president’s car, a Cadillac limousine, has been nicknamed “The Beast”. It is part of the US Secret Service classified motor pool.

The Beast’s armor plating is said to be eight inches thick and its doors weigh as much as those on a Boeing 757 aircraft. It has five-inch thick bulletproof windows with at least five layers to foil attacks. Its bus-size Goodyear tyres are Kevlar-reinforced and capable of keeping The Beast on the road for quite some distance if needed. The interior is sealed off from the outside to reduce risks of a chemical attack. A special foam surrounds the fuel tank to insulate it in the event of an impact, according to published reports. The Beast’s trunk is reported to contain everything from firefighting equipment and oxygen tanks to the president’s blood type. The Beast has three passengers the driver, the president’s lead Secret Service protective agent in the front passenger seat and, of course, the president himself. Four additional seats in the back are available. The drivers are highlytrained who can execute tight turns and other police-style evasion techniques, including turning 180 degrees in seconds. The Beast travels in a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft wherever the president goes. A heavily-armored Chevrolet Suburban communications vehicle accompanies The Beast. Said to weigh 20,000 pounds, the car is said to be a guzzler of fuel.

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order, imposing new sanctions against the government of North Korea in response to what he called Pyongyang’s “numerous provocations,” particularly the cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment. The sanctions targeted three entities — Reconnaissance General Bureau, Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Korea Tangun Trading Corporation, as well as 10 individuals who work for the aforementioned entities, denying them access to the US financial system and banning them doing transactions with US citizens according to the US Treasury Department, Xinhua reported. The actions “will further isolate key North Korean entities and disrupt the activities of close to a dozen critical North Korean operatives,” US Trea-

sury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement. “As the President has said, our response to North Korea’s

attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment will be proportional, and will take place at a time and in a manner of our choosing. Today’s actions are the first aspect of our response,” the White House said. The US has accused Pyongyang of hacking Sony Pictures Entertainment over a comedy film “The Interview” that depicts an assassination attempt on North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. But North Korea has denied involvement, saying such claims were “a wild rumor”.

he past week, apart from ushering in the New Year was also witness to the birth of a new institution in India. The formation of the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has brought the focus back on the country’s reforms process. The opposition, especially the Congress, termed its formation a “dangerous” idea and “an attack on the federal structure” of India’s polity while the CPI-M said that this would spur “privatization”. The ruling NDA responded by saying that the opposition was mere “politics” and those opposing it were “against development”. The new commission, right

from its nomenclature to its stated objectives, appears to be more in tune with the times and the overall economic landscape. For understanding the present and predicting (albeit inaccurately) the future, one often has to rely on the past. Perhaps the time has come to retain only the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and do away with the rest.

Stating that he will introduce credit rating system for all municipalities, he suggested them to raise loans from banks and national and international financial institutions by improving their credit worthiness. The minister asked the municipal bodies to take up digitization of properties, revenues, assets and other details, saying the central government will provide the necessary funds for the project. Naidu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all municipal bodies to start a website and a weekly electronic news digest, giving details of its activities and prepare a list of the poor. Advocating the need for devolution of more powers to urban local bodies, the minister said they should frame their own laws, rules and regulations for better governance.

The film would’ve worked better even without a romantic track but this is Tamil cinema, and we’re used to the idea of having a heroine just for the heck of it even if it’s not necessarily needed. Arya is an extremely busy man, so he doesn’t waste time in singing duets with Hansika. But there’s one intimate number as part of a figment of Usha’s imagination.

ASHINGTON, DC -An Indian American man from Edison, New Jersey, Shayam Sridhar, 21, has been charged with setting fire to a hallway and a classroom in the Allison Road classroom building at Rutgers University in Piscataway last week. Sridhar was charged with seconddegree aggravated arson after he allegedly set fire to a 30-foot section of the hallway and an adjoining classroom on the second floor earlier this month. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Sridhar had been a student at Rutgers, but left in the fall term. He was set to return to Rutgers in the spring 2015 semester. Sridhar was charged after authorities identified him from a photo obtained during the investigation. Bail was set at $75,000 and Sridhar was being held at Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick. The police did not disclose a motive in the Busch Campus fire. The blaze, which was extinguished by the overhead sprinkler system, caused $250,000 in damage. Nobody was injured in the fire, but it forced the evacuation of 210 students who were taking a final exam in a firstfloor auditorium.

The suspect told the victim he wanted money. The victim purchased thousands in Green Dot Money Pak cards and gave the suspect the serial numbers, according to the police.

ERKELEY (CA) -- Vaibhav Loomba, an Indian American student from the University of California at Davis who was pronounced dead after attending a fraternity party at a fraternity house near the U.C.-Berkeley campus died of acute ethyl alcohol intoxication. The Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office Coroner’s Bureau confirmed this on January 1. The police and firefighters found Loomba, 20, of Lafayette, Calif., at the Zeta Psi fraternity house on 2728 Bancroft Way in Berkeley on November 9. He was unresponsive after he attended a party the night before at the fraternity house. According to the coroner’s bureau, the investigation into Loomba’s death remains open. Loomba was described a “truly brilliant”

NGELES (CA) -- At a USC Games Day held on the USC campus December 10, Indian American students were heavily represented in the latest presentation of videogames created by the University of Southern California Games Program. “We have always had many talented Indian students in our courses and on our teams,” said Mike Zyda, director of the USC GamePipe Lab. The collaboration between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering Department of Computer Science helped make USC the No. 1 ranked game design school in North America in 2014 by The Princeton Review. USC Games hosted two events unveiling student-designed games. “We have such a range of games— in virtual reality, two screen experiences, mobile and more. I’m so proud of this year’s cohort because they are really stretching themselves and innovating in the field,” said Tracy Fullerton, director of USC Games, chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media and Games Division and director of the USC Game Innovation Lab.

ULFPORT, MS -- A federal judge has scheduled for January 26 the trial of Dr. Sanjay Sinha, accused of recruiting casino workers in Biloxi to run a prescription pill ring. Sinha, of Woodstock, Georgia, is charged with one count of conspiracy and six counts of drug distribution. An indictment alleges that 49-yearold Sinha wrote prescriptions outside the scope of professional practice and others

conspired to help him illegally distribute narcotics from 2009 until mid-February. Prosecutors allege Sinha is not licensed to practice medicine in Mississippi and wrote prescriptions for drugs outside the scope of his professional practice. The doctor is accused of visiting casinos four to six times a year, befriending casino employees and writing them and others prescriptions for hundreds of pills. CCSU prof pleads not guilty to car crash charges BY A STAFF WRITER

ONNECTICUT-CT -- The associate professor at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), who has faced a string of criminal charges, has pleaded not guilty in court to multiple charges stemming from a car crash earlier this month. CCSU poet-in-residence and associate English professor Ravi Shankar, 39, was not supposed to be behind the wheel when he crashed into a guardrail on Route 9. Shankar is accused of leaving the scene of the crash. “This was a single-vehicle accident. He called his wife and then he called a wrecker. He thought he was doing the responsible thing,” said Shankar’s attorney, Jake Donovan attorney. Shankar himself declined to comment outside the courtroom in Middletown except to confirm that he’s still employed as a professor at CCSU. Shankar made headlines last spring when he was promoted while behind bars waiting to face charges from 2012. At the time, CCSU officials said they weren’t aware of Shankar’s criminal history. Students are now speaking up, asking for updates on Shankar’s status. “I’d be interested to see it and investigative query that would actually publish their findings and their interview process to the students,” said Alex Tremblay. Shankar is due back in court January 23.

ERSEY CITY, NJ -- Attorneys say a fraud count against a fugitive accused of bilking car owners and financiers may help in locating him. Afzal “Bobby” Khan, the fugitive luxury car dealer accused of defrauding dozens of car owners as well as banks and financing companies in deals involving Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Porsches, has been charged with fraud, a charge that may help in efforts to locate him. According to US Attorney Paul Fishman, Khan was charged by a complaint with one count of wire fraud. The criminal complaint, filed by the FBI on October 21, was unsealed in federal court in Newark on Dewcember 30. Attorney Anthony Bush, representing Pavlik and others who accuse Khan of fraud, said that he had not yet seen the unsealed complaint, but that the single count of wire fraud might mean “there’s more to follow.” If Khan is in a country where the US has relations, it could help get him returned to New Jersey. “It might be a placeholder so they can show he’s a fugitive, there’s a charge pending against him, and maybe he can be extradited to face prosecution,” Bush said. Hackensack attorney Ira Hirsch, who is representing car dealers that Khan transferred cars to, said the “entire case against Khan rises and falls on any extradition treaties we might have with Pakistan.” He is convinced Khan is in Pakistan and said the wire fraud charge might persuade Pakistan to take him into custody, although he added, “I have little faith in the Pakistani government to do the right thing.” The US has a bilateral extradition treaty with Pakistan. for racing and high-end cars--has not been seen or heard from since late October. The complaint claims that Khan, through his dealership, Emporio Motor Group, engaged in acts to defraud lenders and customers from at least December 2013 through September 2014. The complaint focuses on wire fraud that occurred in applications for loans made by Emporio and Khan, rather than on the complaints of individual car buyers and sellers. It accuses Khan of “knowingly and intentionally” devising “a scheme and artifice to defraud lenders to, and customers of, his auto dealership” and “to obtain money and property by means of materially false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises.” Khan, the complaint states, committed the fraud by means of wire communications in inter-state and foreign commerce, making it a federal offense. More than 75 people have filed complaints alleging they were victims of fraud by Khan, according to the complaint. Automobile financing businesses and banks also were victims, with one unnamed finance company facing a loss of more than $1.7 million due to Khan’s actions.

Cliford Minej of Thane, Mumbai was a worker on Holland America Line cruise ship. His body, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, drifted ashore near Clearwater Beach in Florida and was spotted by someone walking on the beach. The ship, ‘Ryndam’, came to port in

Tampa last Sunday and the police believe Minej fell off the ship that morning. Since the captain of the ship didn’t notify authorities of Minej’s disappearance until late in the morning of the incident,

the coast guard didn’t know if he had gone overboard or disembarked at the cruise terminal. Multiple area law enforcement agencies searched land and sea and the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Minej’s death accidental. According to a statement from Holland America Line, the ship was at the end of a 14-day trip to the Caribbean. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our crew members and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

Rowland is scheduled to be sentenced on January 7 in federal court in New Haven. He was convicted in September of election fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice for attempts to hide his work on two Republican congressional campaigns through phony business deals. Prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence Rowland to more than three years in prison. Rowland’s lawyers are requesting leniency, saying he should serve no more than 18 months in prison. Rowland resigned as governor in 2004 amid a corruption scandal that sent him to prison for 10 months for taking illegal gifts while in office.

HICAGO, IL -- Beautiful strains of melodious carols, euphonic musical presentations, colorful dances, message-centric skits and inspiring sermons marked the spectacular Christmas Party organized by Willow Creek Community Church (WCCC) at 67 East Algonquin Road, South Barrington, IL. HICAGO (IL) – The police are warning residents of two store robberies witnessed on the Northwest Side during the past two weeks. The two incidents occurred in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood last week and in the Logan Square neighborhood more recently. In the latest robbery, a Hispanic man entered a store in the 2100 block of North Hamlin Avenue around 7:06 pm, displayed a gun and demanded money. The man is 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, and 130 to 160 pounds. The man covered his face with a dark bandana and wore a black or blue hooded sweatshirt. The second incident happened around 5 pm in the nearby 4200 block of West Fullerton Avenue. A Hispanic man walked into the store in that block, implied that he had a weapon and demanded money. He is described as 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, and about 150 pounds. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt and covered his face with a red scarf.

Just after two months of discussion, an agreement was signed between Gujarati Samaj and Hindu Temple. This agreement marks a major milestone in the journey towards keeping the light of cultural torch burning. The Samaj presented a check of $250,000 to the Temple to begin construction of the new building adjacent to the temple. After the prayers, the documents were formally signed and presented to Temple along with the token amount. The Samaj has also committed to help the temple raise additional funds and assured another $50,000 upon occupying the building. Both parties have signed a lease of 99 years. The community center will have a kitchen and large hall with stage and classrooms in 8000 to 10000 SF area. The Samaj will be able to host Navratri & other events at this community center.
