U Chris Alexander, Canada's citizenship and immigration minister NEW DELHI: A delegation of 150 Canadians is expected in Ahmedabad next week to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat summit from January 10-12. “Canada is proud to participate in the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit,” said Chris Alexander, Canada’s citizenship and immigration minister and head of the Canadian delegation. “This summit allows us to further strengthen ties between Canada and India by highlighting business opportunities, sharing experiences and trading ideas.” Canada has dramatically increased its focus on India in recent years building on shared values of democracy and pluralism by steadily increasing trade and investment ties. There are over 300 Canadian companies with a physical presence in India and more than one million Canadians claiming Indian
descent. Canada now has eight offices in India including the high commission in New Delhi, consulates general in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chandigarh and trade offices in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. Canada’s official delegation to Vibrant Gujarat includes Alexander, Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, minister of labour and status of women, Premier Robert Ghiz of Prince Edward Island, Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai, Canadian MPs and businesses in the infrastructure, finance, telecom, energy and pharmaceutical sectors. Nadir Patel, High Commissioner of Canada to India, who arrived in December, will also attend Vibrant Gujarat as a member of the delegation. Patel will join Obhrai, who has previously received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
Defense minister Manohar Parrikar, finance minister Arun Jaitley and chief ministers from half a dozen states will also attend the event, which is likely to see deliberations on framing new industrial and investment-related policies. Modi will ask global companies to join the government’s flagship ‘Make in India’ programme during the two-day summit. The Prime Minister will also host a dinner for visiting guests at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University in Gandhinagar. This is the seventh summit organized by the Gujarat government. It was launched in 2003 by the then chief minister Narendra Modi. The summit has helped the state in attracting large-scale investments in various sectors. US carmaker Ford Motors and Japanese auto giant Suzuki are building their factories with combined investments of close to Rs 8,000 crore.
S Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representatives, feels the relationship between India and the US has been energized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit and wants the two governments to work closely in countering terrorism, including cyber terrorism. “Terrorism is an enemy and a threat that doesn’t wear one country’s uniform or owe allegiance to one country’s flag, but rather exists in many different parts of the world. In order to defeat this threat, we (India and the US) will have to work together,” Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representative, told IANS in an interview during a visit to the capital. “..And that includes the government and leadership of Pakistan taking a stronger stand and action against these terrorists,” Gabbard added. She hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama, during his visit here for the Jan 26 Republic Day celebrations, would discuss the urgency to press upon Pakistan the

need to take the terror threat more seriously. “Both our countries are focused on security. Both are focused on countering terrorism dealing with the growing threat of Islamic extremism . We must focus on seeing how we can collaborate to better defend ourselves against the cyber attacks that are increasingly becoming a threat,” said the 33year old, who is a combat veteran and also an ardent follower of the Bhagavad Gita.
Noting that Modi’s maiden visit to the US in September “energized the relationship between the two countries”, Gabbard said he had come with “a very clear vision and a plan to achieve his objective of where he would like to take India”. She said Modi’s vision struck a chord not just with the Indian diaspora but generated interest “from people involved with politics, in the private sector and those who are looking to participate in what appears to be a very exciting time here in India”. Gabbard, who was in India between Dec 16, 2014, and Jan 3, 2015, and met with Modi, Defense Minster Manohar Parrikar and Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar among a host of other leaders, said she always nurtured a special place for the land of Lord Krishna’s birth and hoped for greater understanding and respect for each others’ culture, traditions, and distinct style of doing business. Gabbard was born into a multicultural and multi-religious family of parents with Samoan and European roots. Fourth among five siblings, Gabbard embraced Hinduism as a teenager and became a student of the Bhagavad Gita.

inister for Overseas Indian Affairs Sushma Swaraj has called upon the diaspora youth gathered here to “come, connect, celebrate and contribute” to be part of the “momentous transformation taking place in the country”. Speaking at the inauguration of the 2015 Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on January 7, Sushma Swaraj, who is also the External Affairs Minister, urged the diaspora youth to contribute to
the country’s development. “We want you, the Pravasis, to contribute to the development of India. We want you to participate in the vision that Prime Minister Modi has for India's future,” she said and enumerated the several programmes launched by the government, including the Make in India, Smart Cities, Swachch Bharat, and Skill India. She said the government has been working in mission mode to implement all these programmes. “You can contribute to them and become an active partner in these ventures. Our government is fully
committed to good governance, efficiency, accountability, transparency, and speedy decision-making.” The minister, addressing the diaspora youth at the Mahatma Mandir complex, said there are “tremendous opportunities today for you to join us, especially in the fields of manufacturing, infrastructure development, education, health, skills development, science and technology, research and innovation, knowledge economy and youth development as part of our effort to realize India's full potential”.
Describing the diaspora as “the most significant example of India's soft power”, Sushma Swaraj said the diaspora has “retained a bit of India” in their hearts. Though living thousands of miles away, you have “kept the spirit of Bharat alive”. The minister said the PBD is “an occasion to reflect upon your heritage, and to touch base with a country which will always consider you as one of its own, regardless of the colour of your passport or the land of your citizenship”. She said the PBD is a platform to connect the diaspora with the

The PBD is held every year to mark the contribution of overseas Indians towards the development of their country, Arab News reported. It was Jan 9, 1915, that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa to lead India’s freedom struggle. “The event will be celebrated in a grand way this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the return to India of Mahatma Gandhi, the great pravasi (expat), from South Africa,” said an organizer. “All Indian nationals living in Saudi Arabia, including persons of Indian origin are welcome to participate in the convention,” organizer added.

ll the top luxury hotels in Delhi have been scanned, the security is being worked out to the last minute detail, and, yes, The Beast will very much be part of the official entourage of US President Barack Obama, chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade. It is learnt that an advance US security team would be in India around Jan 15 to fine-tune the security arrangements for Obama, the world’s most powerful leader. Though Obama visited India in 2010, the security this time would be more challenging as the US president would be seated in the open air on Rajpath for more than two hours to watch the Republic Day parade. In view of threats by Islamist militants after Washington launched air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the security scenario has gained additional importance. A US Secret Service team would be in India next week to scour the luxury hotel where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay. US authorities have examined the top hotels in the capital including the two Taj hotels and Maurya Sheraton but nothing has been finalized, it is learnt. An idea of what Delhi can expect can be had from what transpired at the Marriott in Bris-

bane where Obama stayed for a night in November to attend the G20 Summit. Obama’s security ordered the stripping of an entire floor of the Marriott Hotel — clearing out the furniture and investigating every nook and corner. Security personnel removed bedding and furniture, including mirrors, from rooms. Other rooms were left with just desks and chairs as part of elaborate efforts to ensure Obama is not spied on.
The rooms were swept for bugs so that Obama can conduct confidential business and make private phone calls from within the hotel. US security agencies set up their own secure communications. The hotel was cordoned off and only those with accreditation were let in. Hundreds of staffers accompanying Obama occupied a number of floors at the hotel. Obama had traveled with a special portable security tent which could be set up in hotel rooms to allow him to exam-
ine classified material and hold talks. Obama reached Brisbane airport on board Air Force One and took off in his helicopter Marine One for Victoria Park. From there, he went in a cavalcade of 30 cars to Marriott. The chopper was accompanied by an advance team of three twin-rotor Ospreys and three other presidential helicopters. The president’s car, a Cadillac limousine, has been nicknamed “The Beast”. It is part of the US Secret Service classified motor pool.
The Beast’s armor plating is said to be eight inches thick and its doors weigh as much as those on a Boeing 757 aircraft. It has five-inch thick bulletproof windows with at least five layers to foil attacks. Its bus-size Goodyear tyres are Kevlar-reinforced and capable of keeping The Beast on the road for quite some distance if needed. The interior is sealed off from the outside to reduce risks of a chemical attack. A special foam surrounds the fuel tank to insulate it in the event of an impact, according to published reports. The Beast’s trunk is reported to contain everything from firefighting equipment and oxygen tanks to the president’s blood type. The Beast has three passengers the driver, the president’s lead Secret Service protective agent in the front passenger seat and, of course, the president himself. Four additional seats in the back are available. The drivers are highlytrained who can execute tight turns and other police-style evasion techniques, including turning 180 degrees in seconds. The Beast travels in a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft wherever the president goes. A heavily-armored Chevrolet Suburban communications vehicle accompanies The Beast. Said to weigh 20,000 pounds, the car is said to be a guzzler of fuel.
India snubs US ‘certification’ of Pakistan Sony attack: US impose sanctions against North Korea IANS, NEW DELHI
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order, imposing new sanctions against the government of North Korea in response to what he called Pyongyang’s “numerous provocations,” particularly the cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment. The sanctions targeted three entities — Reconnaissance General Bureau, Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Korea Tangun Trading Corporation, as well as 10 individuals who work for the aforementioned entities, denying them access to the US financial system and banning them doing transactions with US citizens according to the US Treasury Department, Xinhua reported. The actions “will further isolate key North Korean entities and disrupt the activities of close to a dozen critical North Korean operatives,” US Trea-
sury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement. “As the President has said, our response to North Korea’s
attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment will be proportional, and will take place at a time and in a manner of our choosing. Today’s actions are the first aspect of our response,” the White House said. The US has accused Pyongyang of hacking Sony Pictures Entertainment over a comedy film “The Interview” that depicts an assassination attempt on North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. But North Korea has denied involvement, saying such claims were “a wild rumor”.

n a strong reaction to Washington’s pat to Islamabad for acting against terror groups, India said it does not believe Pakistan was showing “sustained commitment” in fighting such outfits. India, however, said how Washington chooses to spend US taxpayers’ money “is entirely its prerogative”. The ‘certification’ by the US makes Pakistan eligible for an aid package under the Kerry-Lugar Bill. The Bill has “actions against terror groups” as one of the conditions that Pakistan must fulfil to be eligible for aid from the US. It authorizes the release of $1.5 billion per year to Pakistan as nonmilitary aid. “India does not believe that Pakistan is showing sustained commitment or making significant effort or ceasing support or dismantling bases of operations of the Lashkare-Taiba, Jaish-e-Muhammad, the Haqqani network and quite possibly the Al Qaeda,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama acknowledged the “real” threat posed by the Sunni radical group Islamic State (IS) in an interview this week, but ruled out another trillion dollars in aid in the efforts to fight the extremist group. “I think we can’t underestimate the danger of ISIL,” the president told the National Public Radio (NPR), using another acronym for the group which has seized about one third of the territory in Syria and Iraq. Citing the group’s aspirations to control large swaths of territory and its possession of resources and an army, Obama said he saw “great dangers” posed to US allies and the threat to destabilize entire regions. “So I don’t want to downplay that threat. It is a real one,” he added. The groups also documented inappropriate use of state media by the ruling Sri Lankan Freedom Party. “Sri Lankan authorities need to take all possible steps to ensure voters, candidates and monitors are not attacked, threatened or intimidated,” said Brad Adams of Human Rights Watch. “The attacks and intimidation that marred the campaign can’t be allowed to continue on election day and during the counting process.” There are also serious concerns about violence after the elections, regardless of the outcome, Human Rights Watch said.
50 die in attack at Yemen police academy SANAA: At least 50 people were killed and dozens of others wounded early on January 7 when a car bomb went off outside the police academy in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, security officials and medics said. Hundreds of soldiers from the interior ministry were lining up in a long queue, waiting to be enlisted in the academy when the explosion took place, security officials said, adding that at least 50 people were killed. On June 11, 2012, an Al Qaeda suicide bomber attacked the academy, killing at least 21 people.

njured all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was included in the 15member Indian squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup starting Feb 14 but star batsman Yuvraj Singh’s hopes of getting a late call-up were dashed as the BCCI announced the team for the megaevent here this week. Jadeja is nursing a shoulder injury sustained during training in the early stages of India’s ongoing tour of Australia. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee met in Mumbai today (Tuesday) and selected the Indian team for the Tri-series between India, Australia and England to be played in Australia from the 18th of January,” Sanjay Patel, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said. “The Indian team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be played in Australia/New Zealand from February 2015 was simultaneously selected.”
SYDNEY: An all-round performance by Australia saw them end the second day’s play with a first innings lead of 501 runs as India finished at 71 for one at stumps in the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here on January 7. Jadeja picked up the injury while training and wasn’t considered for selection for the first two Tests of the ongoing four-match series and returned to India to undergo treatment. Axar Patel was flown in to Australia as a substitute for Jadeja. Patel, the likely candidate to replace Jadeja in case of his unavailability, was also included in the squad. Jadeja was also named in the ODI squad
for the tri-series involving India and England to be played in Australia after the Test series. “Jadeja, at present, is undergoing a rehabilitation program. He is doing wonderfully well. Today, we had a detailed discussion with the physio of the BCCI and we are quite hopeful that, within next ten days, he will be fit,” said Sanjay Patel. Recent Test retiree Mahendra
Singh Dhoni was named the captain of the side while Virat Kohli was declared his deputy. Sanjay Patel also said that pacer Ishant Sharma, left out of the team for the fourth Test at Sydney Tuesday due to an injury, would be fit for the tri-series and the subsequent World Cup. “Ishant has a temporary injury with which he is doing well. But he has been advised by our physio not to play the current Test. He will be fit for the tri-series,” he said. India are the defending champions having won the trophy under

However, opener Lokesh Rahul (31 not out), playing his second Test and Rohit Sharma (40 not out) stabilized the innings for India and stayed at the crease till the close of the play.

‘Did not stake claim to Padma’ Dhoni still replacement keeper: Kohli R IANS, NEW DELHI
SYDNEY: India’s new Test skipper Virat Kohli said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who retired from the longest format of the game after the third Test in Melbourne, is still on standby and will take the field in the fourth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) if something untoward happened to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. “Dhoni is the second keeper as of now, God forbid something happens to Saha, I can’t keep in the game so he obviously has to step in,” Kohli said. The skipper, however, stated that there was no injury concern about Saha and he was fit to play in the fourth Test starting Tuesday. “There’s nothing wrong with Saha but ... something might happen tonight, he might get a stomach bug. Can you guarantee that you will walk out of his room now and not get a twisted ankle? “Saha is playing …MS is on standby,” added the prolific middle order batsman. Dhoni’s decision to quit apparently came as a shock to his family members as it is believed that even they did not know about it before he announced it to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli captained the side in the first Test at Adelaide and impressed with his aggressive style. He almost led the team to victory but a batting collapse in the final session cost India dear.
ubbishing media reports that boxer Vijender Singh, akin to shuttler Saina Nehwal, had staked claim to the Padma Bhushan, the Olympic bronze medalist has said he had only spoken to Boxing India (BI) officials seeking information about the award criteria. Reports were rife in a section of the media during the day that Vijender had demanded that his name be nominated for the country’s third-highest civilian award — a day after fellow Olympic bronze medalist Nehwal was recommended for the prestigious award by the sports ministry “as a special case”. Late last week, Saina had tweeted her displeasure on being ignored for the honour and the sports ministry appeared to have caved in. “I have neither written or spoken to anyone from the sports ministry about this. I have only sought the criterion for the award from Boxing India,” Vijender told IANS. “Boxing India told me to submit my credentials to them and said we will try for you. Now it is up to the federation to decide what to do....” The boxer-turned-actor said he would be unaffected even if the ministry rejects his recommendation as he is aware that the deadline for sending nominations for the award was long

over. The last date for submission of nominations was Sep 15, last year. “I am aware that the last date is over. I am okay if my late recommendation is not entertained by the ministry,” he said. The Haryana-born boxer also said that he supports the ministry’s earlier decision of conferring the award on two-time Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sushil Kumar. “I fully commend the ministry’s decision to confer the award to Sushil Kumar. He is the most deserving candidate having won two Olympic medals,” the 29-year-old said. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee also said that he would accept the ministry’s eventual decision regarding his nomination, should Boxing India submit it to the ministry.

Death of an idea, birth of an institution
The formation of the NITI Aayog brings the focus back on the country’s reforms process AMIT KAPOOR , NEW DELHI
T
he past week, apart from ushering in the New Year was also witness to the birth of a new institution in India. The formation of the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has brought the focus back on the country’s reforms process. The opposition, especially the Congress, termed its formation a “dangerous” idea and “an attack on the federal structure” of India’s polity while the CPI-M said that this would spur “privatization”. The ruling NDA responded by saying that the opposition was mere “politics” and those opposing it were “against development”. The new commission, right
from its nomenclature to its stated objectives, appears to be more in tune with the times and the overall economic landscape. For understanding the present and predicting (albeit inaccurately) the future, one often has to rely on the past. The planning experience in the Soviet Union, China and India point to similarities - and differences as well - are helpful in drawing fascinating insights about the nature of the planning process and how central planning as an idea appears to be dead. The State Planning Commission was nodal body for planning, and this was a just like Russia’s Gosplan in Russia. In 1982, the Commission for Restructuring the Economic System (CRES) was established for directing economic
reforms. In 1998, the SPC was renamed State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) which then merged with CRES and State Economic and Trade Commission. It was renamed in 2006 as Nation-

China no longer conceives itself to be a centrally planned economy but more of a socialist market economy. In India, the Planning Commission was established on March 15, with prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as its chairman though its roots go back to 1938 when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had been persuaded to set up a National Planning Committee. The First Five-year Plan was launched in 1951 and focused on developing the agricultural sector. In between the Indo-Pakistan Conflict of 1965, the planning process was disrupted but the Fourth Plan was formulated in 1969. The Eighth Plan commenced in 1992 after market reforms were initiated in 1991 by the then finance minister Manmohan Singh. Subsequent plans saw a lesser role for the public sector -
Padma awards losing their sheen VISHNU MAKHIJANIM, NEW DELHI
O
nce again a controversy has erupted over the Padma awards even before they have been officially announced with shuttler Saina Nehiwal, an Olympic bronze medalist, throwing a fit over not being considered and the sports ministry meekly caving in. The issue erupted with Saina tweeting her disappointment at her application not being considered for a Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award. “Friends, I am not demanding for the award... My question was why my name was not sent to the home ministry (sic),” she wrote. No doubt the home ministry procedures permit such applications - but is that really the best way for such awards to be conferred by the President of India? Doesn’t it amount to purchasing such awards and also downgrading
Shuttler Saina Nehiwal.
their sanctity? This apart, what purpose do these awards serve? Awardees can’t wear the medal - at best they can frame it, as also the scroll that comes along with it nor can they append it to their names as the uniformed forces can of the medals they are awarded.
To get back to Saina, the sports ministry said Monday it would recommend her name for the award “as a special case”. On Sunday, Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had maintained that he received Saina’s nomination from the Badminton
13
Association of India (BAI) only on Saturday. “The ministry has since received the nomination of Saina Nehwal for Padma Bhushan Jan 3 from Badminton Association of India,” the ministry said in a statement. “In view of the achievements of Saina, the Department of Sports has decided to recommend her case for Padma Bhushan to the ministry of home affairs as a special case although the last date for making the recommendation is long over.” Does this mean that throwing a fit is a criterion? Because Sania also raised the question of wrestler Sushil Kumar’s name being forwarded. Okay, so fight your own battle but why pull down someone else? Surely, this is not what Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, had in mind when he coined the expression: “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the strug-
and several public sector enterprises saw disinvestments. However, these were much more calibrated than the Russian economy that was seen as a prime reason for the 1998 crisis in the Russian economy. Subsequently, in India the role of the Planning Commission had been on the decline, amid the benefits people saw in a free market economy post the market reforms. It is in view of this historical evolution that Narendra Modi had scrapped the Planning Commission, the announcement being made during his maiden I-Day speech on August 15, 2014. The first day of 2015 witnessed the birth of the NITI Aayog. While some believe it is a cosmetic exercise, the fact that planning has been removed from the name suggests that the focus in the future will be on markets rather than governmental control. gle; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” Now take the awards for sportspersons. A year ago, on Jan 3 to be precise, the sports minister issued fresh guidelines for selecting sportspersons for the Arjuna and other such awards. Henceforth, 90 percent weightage would be given to winners of medals at various international championships and sports events of disciplines covered by the Olympics (summer, winter and paralympics), the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Winners of medals in Olympics and Paralympics will automatically be considered for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna or Arjuna Awards, depending on the type of medal won, if they have already not been conferred with either of the two top awards. With these awards considerably losing their sheen, do they serve any purpose in this day and age? Perhaps the time has come to retain only the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and do away with the rest.

S
tating that urban governance is in a “very bad” shape, union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu asked municipal bodies to mobilize resources by levying taxes wherever necessary to improve basic civic amenities. Underlining the need for reforms for better urban governance to overcome the challenges of inadequate infrastructure and resources, he urged the urban bodies to improve physical and social infrastructure and ensure effective governance by involving people in planning process and inviting investments by the private sector. Addressing municipal commissioners of cities with a population of more than a lakh, he advised them to mobilize resources locally by levying new taxes wherever necessary after convincing people that they will get better infrastructure and services. BJP targets 10 million membership in Karnataka BENGALURU: The BJP has embarked on a massive drive to enrol 10 million people as its members in Karnataka over the next three months, party president Amit Shah has said. “As our main objective is to free Karnataka from the Congress rule, we have set a target of enlisting one crore (10 million) voters as our members by March. We have also launched an online drive to enrol even youth as our members,” he told reporters here. Noting Karnataka was the only big state in which Congress was in power, Shah said the state had elected 17 Bharatiya Janata Party MPs, enabling the party secure a majority in Lok Sabha and form the government. Out of the southern state’s 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, the Congress won nine and Janata Dal-Secular two. “It is important for us to rebuild the party in the state and win back the people’s confidence to unseat Congress in the next assembly elections. The membership drive will help us in strengthening the party and expand its base in the state,” Shah said. Party’s state unit president Prahlad Joshi said the party would enrol 10 lakh members in the first phase of
better future. He made it clear that the municipal bodies should not expect thousands of crores from the central and state governments. “Government has no money but they will not say so and make all promises,” he said. Referring to former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s famous remark “money doesn’t grow on
trees”, Naidu said it was a harsh statement but a fact. Stressing the need for transparency and accountability in their functioning, he suggested that every municipal body should tell people what is its revenue and expenditure and what are its plans. “People feel that the taxes go for paying salaries to employees and for
providing facilities to leaders. They will come forward to pay taxes if you convince them that it will be used for their betterment,” he said. “You have to be brutally clear in your approach saying without people’s participation, without paying taxes things will not improve,” he told the commissioners. Stating that he will introduce credit rating system for all municipalities, he suggested them to raise loans from banks and national and international financial institutions by improving their credit worthiness. The minister asked the municipal bodies to take up digitization of properties, revenues, assets and other details, saying the central government will provide the necessary funds for the project. Naidu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all municipal bodies to start a website and a weekly electronic news digest, giving details of its activities and prepare a list of the poor. Advocating the need for devolution of more powers to urban local bodies, the minister said they should frame their own laws, rules and regulations for better governance.

Having almost disappeared for the last two years, she hopes to hog the limelight with the film. “I started working on a Telugu film with Shivaji after Ayyare. But it got shelved for some reasons. Then I was offered Beeruva, and I was told that it was an interesting project. I thought I might as well do something to get recognised as an actress,” Anisha told IANS. J
ust like in the game of chess, how a move by your opponent might totally catch you off guard, the proceedings in Magilzh Thirumeni’s impressive action film Meaghamann achieves that. Interestingly, most of the film’s characters are inspired by chess pieces — king, rook, bishop and pawn. In the climax, when Siva (Arya) locks horns with the villain, Jothi, played by Ashutosh Rana, he slyly whispers in his ear “checkmate”. Both Siva and Jothi are

The chess reference in the story
is quite evident and Magilzh uses it very effectively to highlight some important moments.
In another scene, Jothi is shown playing a game of cards on the road, and he repeatedly ends up picking up the king to symbolically highlight that he’s the king. Arya plays an undercover policeman in a drug cartel. A man on a mission, he has no distractions even when the heroine desperately tries to know more about him. The film would’ve worked better even without a romantic track but this is Tamil cinema, and we’re used to the idea of having a heroine just for the heck of it even if it’s not necessarily needed. Arya is an extremely busy man, so he doesn’t waste time in singing duets with Hansika. But there’s one intimate number as part of a figment of Usha’s imagination.

The last episode of “Bigg Boss 8” was aired Saturday, and it marked the arrival of “Bigg Boss Halla Bol”, where five challengers from past seasons of the show are seen competing with five “champions” from the eighth “Bigg Boss” season. “Well done farah, well done,” tweeted Salman, who had to leave the show due to his film commitments. Despite his absence from “Bigg Boss”, Salman says he’s going to keep a close watch on the show and its contestants, and through his television. The actor took to Twitter to share a close shot of his television screen. It featured the remaining contestants of the show.

auahar Khan’s attacker has alleged that the actress paid him for slapping her in public. But the actress says it is the “most ridiculous claim”. In November last year, Gauahar, who was hosting a reality show in Mumbai, was slapped by Mohammad Akil Malik for reportedly wearing skimpy clothes. And now, Malik has alleged that he was paid to slap her and that she had promised to get him a role in a film. “This is my one and only response to the most ridiculous claim made by an accused who attacked me, went to jail for it and came out only to prove even more what a threat he is to normal living in India for girls, and also the weak stature even the media gives to a girl who especially belongs to the film or TV world,” Gauahar said in a statement. “What this man is claiming is a clear attempt to get away from the heinous crime he committed. It’s absolutely bogus and a very poorly staged and filmy story obviously recommended by people who believe that our law will let him get away with such baseless stories,” she added.

ASHINGTON, DC -An Indian American man from Edison, New Jersey, Shayam Sridhar, 21, has been charged with setting fire to a hallway and a classroom in the Allison Road classroom building at Rutgers University in Piscataway last week. Sridhar was charged with seconddegree aggravated arson after he allegedly set fire to a 30-foot section of the hallway and an adjoining classroom on the second floor earlier this month. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Sridhar had been a student at Rutgers, but left in the fall term. He was set to return to Rutgers in the spring 2015 semester. Sridhar was charged after authorities identified him from a photo obtained during the investigation. Bail was set at $75,000 and Sridhar was being held at Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick. The police did not disclose a motive in the Busch Campus fire. The blaze, which was extinguished by the overhead sprinkler system, caused $250,000 in damage. Nobody was injured in the fire, but it forced the evacuation of 210 students who were taking a final exam in a firstfloor auditorium.

Indian American students enjoy USC Games Day BY A STAFF WRITER

NGELES (CA) -- At a USC Games Day held on the USC campus December 10, Indian American students were heavily represented in the latest presentation of videogames created by the University of Southern California Games Program. “We have always had many talented Indian students in our courses and on our teams,” said Mike Zyda, director of the USC GamePipe Lab. The collaboration between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering Department of Computer Science helped make USC the No. 1 ranked game design school in North America in 2014 by The Princeton Review. USC Games hosted two events unveiling student-designed games. “We have such a range of games— in virtual reality, two screen experiences, mobile and more. I’m so proud of this year’s cohort because they are really stretching themselves and innovating in the field,” said Tracy Fullerton, director of USC Games, chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media and Games Division and director of the USC Game Innovation Lab.

The GamePipe Laboratory Fall Showcase, also held at the same day, celebrated GamePipe’s tenth anniversary and featured over a dozen games. “Over 1,500 computer science students have graduated from our program and gone on to make games played by over 880
million players. These alumni have helped built games that have made over $45 billion in revenue over the last ten years. It is doubtful that there is another academic games CS program that has had this size of an impact on the game industry,” said Zyda.

CCSU prof pleads not guilty to car crash charges BY A STAFF WRITER
C
ONNECTICUT-CT -- The associate professor at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), who has faced a string of criminal charges, has pleaded not guilty in court to multiple charges stemming from a car crash earlier this month. CCSU poet-in-residence and associate English professor Ravi Shankar, 39, was not supposed to be behind the wheel when he crashed into a guardrail on Route 9. Shankar is accused of leaving the scene of the crash. “This was a single-vehicle accident. He called his wife and then he called a wrecker. He thought he was doing the responsible thing,” said Shankar’s attorney, Jake Donovan attorney. Shankar himself declined to comment outside the courtroom in Middletown except to confirm that he’s still employed as a professor at CCSU. Shankar made headlines last spring when he was promoted while behind bars waiting to face charges from 2012. At the time, CCSU officials said they weren’t aware of Shankar’s criminal history. Students are now speaking up, asking for updates on Shankar’s status. “I’d be interested to see it and investigative query that would actually publish their findings and their interview process to the students,” said Alex Tremblay. Shankar is due back in court January 23.

LUXURY CAR DEALER CHARGED WITH FRAUD
J
BY A STAFF WRITER
ERSEY CITY, NJ -- Attorneys say a fraud count against a fugitive accused of bilking car owners and financiers may help in locating him. Afzal “Bobby” Khan, the fugitive luxury car dealer accused of defrauding dozens of car owners as well as banks and financing companies in deals involving Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Porsches, has been charged with fraud, a charge that may help in efforts to locate him. According to US Attorney Paul Fishman, Khan was charged by a complaint with one count of wire fraud. The criminal complaint, filed by the FBI on October 21, was unsealed in federal court in Newark on Dewcember 30. Fishman’s office, in a release, described Khan’s practices at his dealership, Emporio Motor Group in Ramsey, as “large-scale fraud.” Khan is believed to be out of the country, possibly in Pakistan, where he was born, according to attorneys who have been trying to find him on behalf of defrauded customers. The wire fraud charge, they said, could be a placeholder accusation for more charges that would be filed if Khan can be returned to the United States. The FBI confirmed last week that
Afzal ‘Bobby’ Khan
Khan, 32, of Egg Harbor Township, was a fugitive and that authorities were seeking him. Alleged victims of Khan said that they wished law enforcement officials had gone after the car dealer earlier and had arrested him before he had a chance to go into hiding. “It’s about time,” said Jennifer Pavlik of Bayville, when told of the fraud charge. “Can someone explain to me why Bobby was allowed to continue to operate for a year?” she said. Khan claimed to have sold Pavlik’s Infiniti FX35 SUV for $38,000 and never gave her the money. He then allegedly transferred the car to another dealer without the title. “There was never a doubt that he had committed a fraud,” Pavlik said.
Attorney Anthony Bush, representing Pavlik and others who accuse Khan of fraud, said that he had not yet seen the unsealed complaint, but that the single count of wire fraud might mean “there’s more to follow.” If Khan is in a country where the US has relations, it could help get him returned to New Jersey. “It might be a placeholder so they can show he’s a fugitive, there’s a charge pending against him, and maybe he can be extradited to face prosecution,” Bush said. Hackensack attorney Ira Hirsch, who is representing car dealers that Khan transferred cars to, said the “entire case against Khan rises and falls on any extradition treaties we might have with Pakistan.” He is convinced Khan is in Pakistan and said the wire fraud charge might persuade Pakistan to take him into custody, although he added, “I have little faith in the Pakistani government to do the right thing.” The US has a bilateral extradition treaty with Pakistan. Khan, who kept a high profile before fraud allegations began surfacing in September--appearing on the reality television show “The Real Housewives of New Jersey’’ and tweeting about his love
for racing and high-end cars--has not been seen or heard from since late October. The complaint claims that Khan, through his dealership, Emporio Motor Group, engaged in acts to defraud lenders and customers from at least December 2013 through September 2014. The complaint focuses on wire fraud that occurred in applications for loans made by Emporio and Khan, rather than on the complaints of individual car buyers and sellers. It accuses Khan of “knowingly and intentionally” devising “a scheme and artifice to defraud lenders to, and customers of, his auto dealership” and “to obtain money and property by means of materially false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises.” Khan, the complaint states, committed the fraud by means of wire communications in inter-state and foreign commerce, making it a federal offense. More than 75 people have filed complaints alleging they were victims of fraud by Khan, according to the complaint. Automobile financing businesses and banks also were victims, with one unnamed finance company facing a loss of more than $1.7 million due to Khan’s actions.
Indian ship worker is found dead on Florida beach Ex-Gov faces 3-year BY A STAFF WRITER

LEARWATER (FL) -- A 27-year old Indian, who worked on a Caribbean cruise ship, died after falling off the ship and was identified after his body washed up on a beach in the US state of Florida. Cliford Minej of Thane, Mumbai was a worker on Holland America Line cruise ship. His body, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, drifted ashore near Clearwater Beach in Florida and was spotted by someone walking on the beach. The ship, ‘Ryndam’, came to port in
Tampa last Sunday and the police believe Minej fell off the ship that morning. Since the captain of the ship didn’t notify authorities of Minej’s disappearance until late in the morning of the incident,
the coast guard didn’t know if he had gone overboard or disembarked at the cruise terminal. Multiple area law enforcement agencies searched land and sea and the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Minej’s death accidental. According to a statement from Holland America Line, the ship was at the end of a 14-day trip to the Caribbean. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our crew members and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

RINCETON (NJ) -- After last year’s successful New Year eve bash and outstanding nationwide tour of Samanvay in 2014, OHMkara, under the leadership of well-known business entrepreneur Pinakin Pathak and his dedicated team, once again organized a successful New Year’s Eve party at Pind Restaurant in Princeton, NJ on December 31. The celebration was attended by some 200 revellers in a beautifully-decorated banquet hall with residents from Princeton, Plainsboro, West Windsor, South and North Brunswick, Edison, Hillsborough and surrounding towns. This year’s theme was “James Bond Style” where men traditionally wore black Tuxedo and bow tie and women with dashing black, blue or red gown to match with the theme. The three generation guests danced on the floor for five hours with exciting music and sound of Bollywood and English songs which included Hindi, Punjabi and re-mixes from various famous tracks of old and new party songs.

N The event started with welcome drinks which consisted of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks and mouth- watering, hot and delicious vegetarian and non-veg appetizers. The banquet hall decoration reminded one of Hollywood Party with James Bond movie, with all walls depicting visuals from 23 Bond films. The champagne
toast was done sharp at the midnight. A major attraction was the ‘My name is Bond, James Bond’ open bar which served all kinds of drinks for more than seven hours, not to mention a ‘Dressed to Eat’ Bond-style menu superbly chosen by the OHMkara Team and the “Live and let fry” appetizers.
EW HAVEN (CT) -Fo r m e r C o n n e c t i c u t Governor John Rowland is days away from learning his punishment in an election fraud case. Rowland is scheduled to be sentenced on January 7 in federal court in New Haven. He was convicted in September of election fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice for attempts to hide his work on two Republican congressional campaigns through phony business deals. Prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence Rowland to more than three years in prison. Rowland’s lawyers are requesting leniency, saying he should serve no more than 18 months in prison. Rowland resigned as governor in 2004 amid a corruption scandal that sent him to prison for 10 months for taking illegal gifts while in office.

When the girls heard the noise, they ran to their parent’s room and hid in the closet and as the crooks rummaged through the house, the older sister called 911. “When we were in the closet, I was praying,” said Rhea Akula, one of the sisters. “I made a bet that I would never fight with my sister again.” The thieves ran off as the police arrived but are still at large. The sisters said they often talked with their parents and had a plan if something bad happened.

Flavor your party
with new age cocktails From delicious pani-puri to scrumptious cupcakes, vodka mixers have gone through a huge evolution IANS, NEW DELHI
P
lanning a party can often be confusing, especially when you have no idea what drinks to serve the guests. Try five new age drink mixes that are easy to make. Smirnoff, one of the largest vodka brand in the world, brings you five vodka trends with new age mixes: * Popsicles: Mix 30 ml Smirnoff orange vodka with 90ml tonic water and evenly pour it into popsicle trays or cups. Insert a popsicle stick and leave it to freeze overnight. * Tabasco and Dark Chocolate: Take 30 ml Smirnoff Black with ice and a dash of tabasco and dark chocolate. The boldness and smoothness will leave you asking for more. * Vanilla and Vodka Cupcakes: Yes, you read that right. Cupcakes may have been the rage when it comes to food trends, but now vodka-infused cupcakes are the next big thing. Try making vanilla cupcakes by replacing one out of two teaspoons of vanilla extract with Smirnoff vodka. * Pani puri: Vodka pani puri is

Mumbai's street staple with a twist. Add Smirnoff classic vodka to the spicy pani puri water, and you have a zesty snack-cum-drink waiting to be devored. Add 30 ml vodka to 250 ml of pani puri water. This provides 10 pani puris.
Look beyond smoky eyes for parties IANS, LOS ANGELES
T
he party season is still not over, so forget the same old smoky eye make-up. Try other interesting looks instead. Whether you’re heading out to a party or planning a night at home with friends, the following looks will help you to look good, reports peoplestylewatch.com. * Shimmery eye shadow: If you’re all about glitter and glitz, then a shimmery eye shadow is the perfect look for you. Just coat your favorite copper shadow on your lids. Then, to really make your eyes pop, brush on some silver shadow in the inner corners and skim a brown eyeliner on the lower lash line. Then brush on a couple of coats of mascara, and you’re good to go. * Exaggerated cat eye make-up: Cat-eye liner is a universal make-
up trick that looks great on just about everyone. But the exaggerated version? It’s a little harder to apply during the day, but it’s the perfect look for a party-filled night. * Bright, bold lip: Leave the lip gloss at home and instead opt for a darker and richer hue. Just add a swipe of your favorite dark lip stain (red, wine or plum) to your pout before heading out to pair with your winged-out liner or shimmery eyes.
*Penne ala Vodka Sauce: A smooth, creamy sauce made with tomatoes, cream and a splash of vodka — Vodka sauce is becoming increasingly popular. Be sure to add some vodka to your pasta for sharp taste and a touch of heat.
sincere, well timed "thank you" for customers can reap huge rewards for companies, says a marketing scholar from Michigan State University. According to the study which focused on an upscale sit-down restaurant, satisfied customers who received an acknowledgement of their comments from the company president increased patronage to the business by more than 50 percent. The simple gesture of thanking customers was just as effective - and less damaging to the company's bottom line - as acknowledgements that included rewards in the form of gift cards and guaranteed
reservations. "These findings suggest that simple, sincere gestures are enough to drive feelings of gratitude among consumers," said Clay Voorhees, associate professor of marketing and lead author of the study. Voorhees and his fellow researchers tracked patrons' attitudes and behaviors for a year after they gave the eatery high marks. While firms routinely collect customer feedback, few act on this information. Further, little attention is given to managing feedback from highly satisfied customers. Within a week of completing the online satisfaction survey, customers were sent a thank you email from the company president.
Stay healthy in 2015 with proper diet, right exercise LOS ANGELES: Looking to shape up in the New Year? Check your diet, pick exercises wisely and more. Fitness expert Tracy Anderson shares how to stay in shape, reports people.com. l Be honest with yourself about the body you want: Have a real conversation about where you’re at with your health. You need to find exercises with some sort of strategy behind them, a strategy for how you want your body to look and perform. l Exercise five to seven days a week: If you don’t work out one day, you’re going to stay the same or gain weight. We need to get used to taking care of our bodies. We spend five minutes a day brushing our teeth, and teeth are tiny in comparison to the rest of our bodies. So if teeth take up five minutes of your day, the rest of your body can take up 30 to 60 minutes. l Diet and exercise go hand in hand: If you have weight to lose, you have to train yourself to be good at exercise. And diet is definitely important, but it’s not about calorie restriction. Avoid processed foods, and include foods that as are as close to nature as possible, as well as greens and superfoods like mulberries. l Create a good playlist: Working out to music is something that people need to do.
