ndia and the US are “destined to be strategic partners”, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on April 12 as the two countries announced an inprinciple agreement on a military logistics deal. Carter’s three-day visit also saw the two sides agreeing on setting up a new Maritime Security Dialogue between officials from the defense and external affairs ministries, with the US emphasizing on freedom of navigation in the seas.
“The US-India relation is destined to be one of the fine partnerships of the 21st century,” Carter said at a joint press conference with Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar here. Carter said as the US was reaching west, India was reaching east, and also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he has a “tremendous vision” for India’s future. The two sides announced agreement for a Logistic Exchange Memorandum of Agreement, a new name for the Logistics Support Agreement that has been under discussion for
Obama mulling visit to Hiroshima WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is considering a visit to Hiroshima during his visit to Japan in May for the Group of Seven summit, the White House has said. The White House on April 13 said the US government was exploring the first visit by an incumbent US president to Hiroshima, where the country’s forces dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, The Japan Times reported. “This is a question about whether or not the president will visit Hiroshima that comes up regularly whenever the president makes plans to travel to Japan,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. “The president will, and his team will obviously consider our options here.” The pursuit of a world free of nuclear weapons continues to be “a long-term goal” for Obama, Earnest said. “There’s no more powerful illustration of that commitment than the city that contained the victims of the first use of that weapon,” the spokesman said. A visit by an incumbent president to Hiroshima or Nagasaki, which was atomic-bombed by US forces in
NEW DELHI: The US takes terror emanating from Pakistan “very seriously” and the F-16 fighter jets have been given to it to fight terrorism, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on April 12. “We take terrorism emanating from Pakistan very seriously,” Carter said. At a joint press conference with Parrikar, on being asked if the US was trying to be a trusted ally of India while supplying the F-16 fighters to Pakistan, Carter said: “We do
try to be trusted partner of India.” He said the US has given some unique technologies to India. “We don’t have an agreement like that with other countries.” Drawing a parallel with India’s relations with Russia, Carter said the US values its relations with Pakistan. “India also has relation with other countries like Russia. We respect that,” he said. “What we do in Pakistan is directed towards counter terrorism. We too
have suffered from terrorism emanating from the territory, more specifically Afghanistan,” Carter said. “Pakistan has used F-16 in operations in FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas). We have approved it. We take terrorism emanating from Pakistan very seriously,” Carter added. He also said the US did not want any conflict between India and Pakistan. The US confirmed in mid-February the supply to Pakistan of eight F-16 fighter aircraft worth $699.04 million despite protests from India.
almost a decade now. While both Parrikar and Carter said the draft for the agreement will be finalized, Carter clarified that it will not involve the presence of US troops in India. Parrikar said the growing interaction between armed forces of the two countries is a “significant aspect of bilateral relationship”, pointing out that India has more joint exercises with the US than any other country in the world. “In this context, Secretary Carter and I agreed, in principle, to conclude a Logistic Exchange
Memorandum of Agreement in the coming months,” Parrikar said. He added that the draft of the agreement will be ready in a month. Asked if it will mean the presence of US troops in India, Carter said: “No one is talking about the US troops on Indian soil.” He added that the details of the logistic support will be decided by the two governments. In support of the India-US Joint Strategic Vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region and the maritime security objectives
therein, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in the area of maritime security. In this context, Carter described India as the “net security provider” in the region. While the two sides decided to start a new bilateral Maritime Security Dialogue, they also decided to expeditiously conclude a “white shipping” technical arrangement to improve data sharing on commercial shipping traffic. A navy-to-navy discussions on submarine safety and anti-submarine warfare will also be started.
India has potential to do better than 7.5 percent, says Jaitley IANS, WASHINGTON
I 1945, is expected to stir controversy in the US, where it could be interpreted as tantamount to an apology for the attacks, which many veterans and others see as having been necessary to get Japan to surrender in World War II. Earnest said such concerns would not be a factor in the final decision about Obama’s possible visit to Hiroshima. Whatever decision Obama makes “will be consistent with the president’s strong view about the bravery, courage and heroism of those Americans who fought and won World War II,” the spokesman said.
ndia has the potential to grow at a faster pace on the back of healthy monsoon rains, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said. The minister, who is on a 10day visit to the US, spoke at an event organized here on April 13 by the American think-tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “On 7.5 percent by global standards or by world standards, in the current situation are we doing well? The answer is Yes. But by our own requirement standards are we doing well enough? I think, we can do better,” Jaitley said at the event. “Does 7.5 percent satisfy either the Indian government, me or the Prime Minister or India’s political opinion, the answer is no. I think, by our own yardstick, we realize that we have potential in a helpful environment to do better,” he said. The minister raised concern over
the decline in exports and said the Indian government has taken various measures to mitigate the adverse impact of the global slowdown. “The fact that in this otherwise globally adverse environment by putting some domestic policies in place, by using investments and surpluses cleverly we have managed to sustain some growth. One of the biggest areas of worry has
been the declining exports,” he observed. According to Jaitley, India can achieve a higher growth rate of over 7.5 percent on the back of healthy monsoon rains. “I have seen in the last two or three days the predictions seem to be much kinder to us this year, and if that were to happen, we are capable of... improving upon our growth rate,” he noted.

The first to die was Sathyan, 55, who too passed away at the same Thiruvananthapuram hospital. Late in the evening, a 14-year-old boy, Sabari, also succumbed to his 90 percent burn injuries. NEWS DIGEST India’s tiger numbers increase to 2,500 NEW DELHI: India announced an increase in its tiger population -- with 2,500 tigers in the wild from 2,226 in 2014, while the global tiger population has risen from 3,200 to 3,890. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekhar said this at the Third Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation. The census was based on data fed by 49 tiger reserves across India. The numbers also did not incorporate around 90 tiger deaths since 2015, of which 51 deaths were due to poaching and seizures. The survey was conducted by Wildlife Protection Society of India. “It (poaching) has not hiked that much. If 2,500 is our tiger population today, then around 810 cases of poaching are reported in a year. But we are also controlling that and arresting the offenders,” Javadekar told IANS.

Radhakrishnan and Justice Anu Sivaraman came down heavily on Kerala Police for not preventing the Kollam deaths. The judges asked if the probe by the Crime Branch into the incident was enough or whether the Central Bureau of Investigation should be roped in. The judges demanded to know if “anti-national forces” were involved with the Sunday explosions. Authorities in Kollam took steps to conduct
DNA tests on unclaimed bodies. Officials said family members of those missing to reach Kollam on Wednesday with identity proof of the missing ones. The Kerala government has, meanwhile, called an all-party meeting on Thursday to see if a consensus can be reached on total or partial ban on firecrackers, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said. There had been suggestions that fireworks which give more prominence to visual treats must be taken up and sound levels be brought to the minimum, like in the UAE and Singapore, he said.
KOLKATA: Braving the sweltering heat and oppressive humidity, people turned out in huge numbers on Monday to exercise their right to franchise in the West Bengal assembly polls in 31 constituencies, amid reports of sporadic violence and intimidation. The opposition parties accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of resorting to widespread violence during the day, when the second part of the first phase of the assembly election took place covering 13 constituencies in West Midnapore and nine each in Bankura and Burdwan districts. According to officials, between 75 and close to 85 percent polling was seen in the three districts till 5 p.m. However, till 8 p.m., the officials could not provide the final overall percentage.

urfew was clamped again in parts of a tense Kashmir Valley amid simmering anger over the death of four civilians, killed in alleged firing and tear gas shelling by security forces in the last two days. As a precautionary measure and to prevent trouble-mongers from spreading rumors, authorities also snapped cellphone internet for the time being. A senior police said that “restrictions will continue” in parts of old Srinagar city. Restrictions were also imposed in the main business hub of Lal Chowk, amid a valley-wide shutdown call by separatist groups in protest against the civilian deaths. Curfew was also enforced in the

north Kashmir Handwara town and parts of the border district of Kupwara. Three civilian were killed in Handwara on April 12 when police fired at an angry mob protesting against the alleged molestation of a teenage girl by an army man. The army has, however, dismissed the allegation as a rumor to malign the force. A day later, people in Kupwara took to the streets to protest the Handwara deaths. A burning tear
gas canister fired by police hit a 25year-old man on his head. The man later succumbed to the injury. The police officer said the authorities had made adequate security arrangements in other towns in south and north Kashmir “to ensure that miscreants are prevented from creating any law and order problem”. Separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik, have been placed under house-arrest.

Envoys join Swachh Bharat campaign
Four ambassadors, meeting over a tennis doubles tournament, came up with the idea of raising funds for building ecological toilets in an Indian village KAVITA BAJELI-DATT, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a national initiative to keep India’s cities and towns clean, is getting a diplomatic push with 22 ambassadors from across continents coming together to raise funds for making one Indian village open-defecation free. The idea to join the initiative and make contribution for the community occurred last year when four ambassadors met over a routine tennis doubles tournament. Serbian ambassador Vladimir Maric took the lead and he was
joined by his tennis mates and counterpart from Bosnia Sabit Subasic, Guatemalan envoy Georges de La Roche Du Ronzet and Chile’s mission head Andrés Barbé González. They came up with the idea to raise funds by organising a charity tennis match for building ecological toilet in an Indian village. The event would have also promoted tennis as a sport in India. Serbian envoy Maric, who initiated the project, said, “An idea just came while we were talking and enjoying tennis. It took us time, but now we are ready with Tennis4Toilets. We want the participants to play tennis and help pay for ecolog-
ical toilets.” The aim, he said, was to raise enough money to make one entire Indian village open-defecation free. “We are expecting good participation both from private companies and individuals,” Maric told IANS. Initially there were just the four of them. The others like Morocco’s ambassador Larbi Reffouh later became part of the initiative, given its altruistic appeal. Reffouh told IANS: “Prime Minister Modi’s vision to give importance to cleanliness and health, particularly for the rural population, is a project that everyone would want to support.” The two-day doubles charity tennis
tournament will be held on April 16-17. The first match will be at the R K Khanna Tennis Stadium and the second at the Serbian Embassy in Chanakyapuri. For their initiative, they have got the full backing of the corporate world. From Tata to ITC, corporates have come out to support this idea wholeheartedly. The organisers are expecting heads of diplomatic missions, international organisations, corporates and staff members to join the matches. For the charity match, they have got support from the Ministry of External Affairs and are partnering with the All Indian Tennis Asso-
ciation, while the implementing agency is Sulabh Sanitation Mission Foundation. The winners will play an exhibition match with Indian Davis Cup Team members, Reffouh added. Sulabh was roped in the venture as they are the pioneers in providing sanitation solutions to the poor and several ambassadors, including US ambassador to India Richard Verma, has expressed confidence over the expertise of the organisation in improving sanitation in India and several African countries. The funds generated through the tennis tournament will also be used in improving sanitation facilities.
‘International outlook changing on India’s IPR’ APARAJITA GUPTA, NEW DELHI
A
fter decades of concern, the outlook of foreign entities over India’s intellectual property rights regime (IPR) is beginning to turn positive, thanks to a realisation in the country that innovation will be meaningless without legal protection for creativity, say experts. “One of the most powerful things being done in 50 years is on intellectual property rights. The new policy (under consideration) talks about encouraging innovation. We have seen in the last two years huge changes in our approach in this area,” said Pravin Anand of law firm Anand and Anand. Modernisation efforts at patent offices, amendment of rules to streamline procedures, recruitment of a large number of examiners to handle the volumes of patent applications and efforts to reduce
backlog are positive changes in this domain, he said. “If this kind of a policy continues at the same momentum at which it is proceeding, then it will
hugely change the perspective of Western investors. If foreign players are assured that they are safe here, then who wouldn’t want such a fantastic market (like India)?”
Anand queried to IANS. Corroborating this, Andrew Bradshaw, director, Asian Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy, said Western countries feel
there has been a lot of difference in India’s intellectual property rights protection after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s drive for a better regime. “Since Modi took charge there is a lot of difference. I think it is a refreshing change. In the West, we can see that,” Bradshaw, who is also global head brand protection, Superdry, told IANS. He said law enforcement was equally important as India steps up the regime. India’s ranking globally on intellectual property has also not been encouraging. According to the International Property Rights Index, published by the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation’s Property Rights Alliance, India was ranked 62nd globally in 2015. India’s score in 2015 was 5.2 -- lower than its score of 5.5 in 2014. The report analysed the regimes of 129 nations, both on the legal and political environments.

In a related development, Atul Gupta and Varun Gupta, senior members of the family, also announced their resignations from their respective posts at the Oakbay company.

Canadian PM to apologize to Sikhs OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on April 11 that he will offer a full apology for a government decision in 1914 to deny entry of Sikhs in the country. “As a nation, we should never forget the prejudice suffered by the Sikh community at the hands of the Canadian government of the day. We should not and we will not,” Trudeau said. “That is why, next month, on May 18, I will stand in the House of Commons and offer a full apology for the Komagata Maru incident,” he added. The chartered Japanese ship Komagata Maru sailed into the Vancouver harbor on May 23, 1914, with 376 people from Punjab. Most of them were Sikhs. The Canadian government refused to allow the passengers to disembark and Komagata Maru sat in the harbor for two months. On July 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru was escorted out to sea by a Canadian naval cruiser and returned to India, where 20 people were killed as they tried to disembark and the others were jailed.

n a boost to the idea of human hand becoming an ideal display screen for the next generation of smartwatches and other devices, an Indian-origin scientist-led team has created tactile sensations on the palm using ultrasound sent through the hand. The research — funded by the Nokia Research Center and the European Research Council — is the first to find a way for users to feel what they are doing when interacting with displays projected on their hand. According to professor Sriram Subramanian from University of Sussex, technologies will inevitably need to engage other senses such as touch as we enter into an “eye-free” age of technology. “Wearables are already big business and will only get bigger. But as we wear technology more, it gets smaller and we look at it less, and therefore multisensory capabilities become much more important,” Subramanian added.
A member of professor Sriram Subramanian's team presenting the novel technology.
The new innovation called SkinHaptics sends sensations to the palm from the other side of the hand, leaving the palm free to display the screen. The device uses “time-reversal” processing to send ultrasound waves through the hand. This technique is effectively like ripples in water but in reverse - the waves become more targeted as they travel through the hand, ending at a precise point on the palm.
It draws on a rapidly growing field of technology called haptics, which is the science of applying touch sensation and control to interaction with computers. “If you imagine you are on your bike and want to change the volume control on your smartwatch, the interaction space on the watch is very small. So companies are looking at how to extend this space to the hand of the user,” Subramanian said.

The president also denounced “a conspiracy aiming to bring about a coup in Brazil,” led by Vice President Michel Temer and Eduardo Cunha, president of the chamber of deputies. Both men are from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), a key coalition partner of Rousseff’s left-leaning Workers’ Party. The chamber will start the debate on her impeachment on Friday morning, and the process will last until the crucial vote set on Sunday. For the impeachment proceedings to move forward, 342 of the 513 lawmakers, or 67 percent, will have to vote in favor. If not, the proceedings will be shelved.

Saenuri previously had only a slim majority in the assembly. It meant that President Park Geun-hye’s time in office had been hampered by legislative gridlock. If the exit polls are correct, they indicate rising discontent probably over two issues. Firstly, attempts by the government to weaken the legal protection
workers have against being sacked. President Park’s government had been pushing for this as the economy weakened and, she felt, became less competitive. Secondly, unhappiness at what opponents of the government see as a heavier hand against dissidents and protesters. A left-wing opposition party was banned and its leaders arrested for their alleged sympathies with North Korea. Polls ahead of the election suggested Park’s center-right party was on course to secure a substantial majority of seats. ‘AIADMK, DMK are corrupt’ BJP president Amit Shah on April 13 urged the people of Tamil Nadu to vote for his party, saying it could provide the alternative to existing political parties in the state IANS, TIRUCHIRAPALLI (TAMIL NADU)

JP president Amit Shah on April 13 alleged that the AIADMK, DMK and the Congress were all corrupt and urged the people of Tamil Nadu to vote his party to power. The Bharatiya Janata Party can provide the alternative to the existing political parties in the state, Shah said. Speaking to reporters in Tiruchirapalli, around 340 km from Chennai, after chairing a party meeting, Shah alleged that ruling AIADMK, DMK as well as the Congress were corrupt parties. He listed out the 2G corruption case in the context of the DMK and the case of disproportionate assets to target AIADMK leader and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Shah said the Enforcement Directorate's case against Karti Chidambaram, son of Congress leader P. Chidambaram, showed that the three parties indulged in corruption when in power. In contrast, he asserted, there were no corruption charges against the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said Tamil Nadu voters normally voted out a government but in the May 16 assembly elections, they should decide which party must come to power. He added that the BJP could provide the "alternative" Tamil Nadu was seeking. The BJP will give a transparent and good governance. According to him, the AIADMK and DMK had ruled Tamil Nadu alternatively for the past nearly 50 years and it was time for a change. The BJP leader said Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa on April 11 categorically said the central government's Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme will negatively impact the state and its people while benefitting the private power producers and banks. Addressing an election rally in Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district, she said: "The UDAY scheme is brought so that the state government can take the liabilities of the power distribution companies which then can borrow from banks and buy power." Jayalalithaa, also the AIADMK general secretary, said at the national level, private power producers have sufficient generation capacity but power cuts are there in many states as the power distribution companies are making loss and not able to service their bank loans. Since private power generators are not in a position to operate their plants in full capacity they are not able to service their bank loans and their loan accounts has been classified as non-performing assets (NPA) by banks, she said. Claiming the UDAY scheme was introduced so that the state government can assume the liabilities of
efits only banks and the private power producers, and not the state government or the people. Shah claimed that due to the steps taken by the Modi government, the firing at Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy had stopped.
the power distribution companies which in turn would enable the latter to borrow from banks to purchase power for distribution, she claimed that the scheme is to benefit the private power producers and the banks and not the people or the state government. She said under the UDAY scheme, the power tariff has to be revised every three months, which is not acceptable to her. Jayalalithaa also assured that if she is relected then she would introduce liquor prohibition in the state in phases - first reduction in shop timings; reduction in number of outlets; setting up of de-addiction centers and finally full prohibition.
The central government had also ensured that the death penalty given to five fishermen in Sri Lanka was not carried out. The BJP is fighting the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu alongwith smaller parties.
‘Probe into heavy water leak in Kakrapar reactor on’ IANS, CHENNAI
T CHENNAI: DMK president M. Karunanidhi, who will contest for a record 13th time in assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, will start his campaign from April 23, it was announced on April 12. Karunanidhi, 93, will file his nomination on April 25 in Tiruvarur assembly constituency, about 320 km from here. Elections in Tamil Nadu are due on May 16. After a public rally here on April 23, the former chief minister will address more than 30 public rallies.
AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
he Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has started investigating the reasons for leak of heavy water at its 220 MW reactor at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat, said a senior official. “We have started our investigations and corrective action will be done after that,” L.K. Jain, site director, Gujarat, told IANS over phone on April 11. On restarting of power generation, he said it will take some time but not very long. On the morning of March 11, the first reactor at KAPS shut down automatically following leakage of heavy water from its coolant chan-
nel. The leak was plugged ten days later. Once the inspection of the affected reactor is done, then the channel has to be cut and sent to a lab for
testing. A senior official of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) told IANS that the coolant channel has to be cut without disturbing the leak spot.
Queried whether NPCIL can restart the reactor with or without new coolant channel, AERB chairman S.A. Bhardwaj had earlier told IANS: “Both options are possible. The affected channel is low power one.” As the reactor has 306 channels and each channel has 12 fuel bundles, the absence of one channel and a bundle will not cut down the power output if the reactor is restarted, he said. The NPCIL has to take the call as it has to complete its probe into the leakage of heavy water and the kind of damage that the coolant channel has suffered, Bhardwaj had said. As the affected channel is in the reactor’s core area, it has to be removed carefully due to radiation.

I was stunned by Vijay sir’s decision to not use body doubles and take risks. I was in awe of his risk-taking ability,” Atlee, who thoroughly enjoyed working with Vijay,” told IANS. The film marks the first time collaboration of Vijay and Atlee. Although an action-entertainer at heart, the director says the film is about good parenting. “Every crime involves emotions. I wanted to get to the bottom of it. It’s all about good parenting. That’s Theri,” he said, What adding Vijay differentiates fights for a very important ‘Theri’ from other social cause in police stories is the movie. the solid, In the film, genuine Vijay plays an upright police emotional factor officer. — Vijay “What differentiates ‘Theri’ from other police stories is the solid, genuine emotional factor,” he added. Vijay will also be seen as a doting father. Child artiste Nainika plays his daughter. “Nainika has performed on par with Vijay sir. Scenes between them will be fun and equally emotionally,” he said. The film also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson.
‘Semma Botha Aagatha’ different film for Atharvaa: Director CHENNAI: Director Badri Venkatesh says upcoming Tamil action comedy Semma Botha Aagatha, which is on the verge of completion, will be a very different film for its lead actor Atharvaa, who has also doubled up as the producer. “It is a project we are all excited about. It is going to be a very different film for Atharvaa, whose performance will be a breakout from anything he has done so far. It is an extremely contemporary and commercial film,” Venkatesh told IANS. Though not a complete road film, the director says some part of it unfolds on the road. “It is a funny take on a guy who does not get drunk. Contrary to the title, it is a very positive film and we do not endorse drinking. By next month, we should wrap up the shoot and we are hoping for July or August release,” said Venkatesh, who has teamed up with Atharvaa for the second time. They had previ-
ously worked in 2010 Tamil romantic-drama Baana Kaathadi. Semma Botha Aagatha is being bankrolled under Atharvaa’s Kiickass Entertainment. “Atharvaa loved the script, so much so that he decided to produce it. He has a passion for producing, and as a producer absolutely had no financial restrictions right from the beginning,” he added.
Have immense respect for Nithya’s work: Suriya CHENNAI: Actor Suriya said on Monday that he respects his co-star Nithya Menen from upcoming Tamil sci-fi thriller “24”, for her commitment towards work. “All that Nithya needs is 20 seconds before a scene to prepare her-
self for the shot. She would close her eyes briefly and get everything right,” Suriya said speaking at the audio launch of the film, which has music by A.R. Rahman. Talking about the film, which is slated to hit the screens in May, Suriya said: “It’s a very ambitious project and it was the first time I heard a story for four and half hours. We’ve really enjoyed working on the project and I hope everyone will like it.” Suriya plays a triple role in the film. “I wasn’t ready to do another double role script in my career. But, i ended up playing triple roles in this film,” he said. Directed by Vikram K Kumar, the film also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and is produced by Suriya.
FILM REVIEW | TAMIL
‘Sardaar Gabbar Singh’: Entertaining, but lazily written
I
n K.S. Ravindra-directed Sardaar Gabbar Singh, Pawan Kalyan is a treat to watch, even in the most cliched scenes and that’s why his fans love him. He knows how to play to the gallery, in his own nonchalant style. And although aware of his limitations as an actor, he pulls off his roles with ease. It’s applicable in the case of his latest outing, which is entertaining in parts, but is so lazily written that it is literally a struggle to sit through the film. In Sardaar Gabbar Singh, Kalyan has doubled up as a writer, and one wonders if he had learnt anything from his maiden unsuccessful writing attempt in 2003 film “Johnny”,
Film: “Sardaar Gabbar Singh”; Language: Telugu; Director: K.S. Ravindra; Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Kajal Aggarwal, Brahmanandam, Sharad Kelkar, Kabir Duhan Singh, Mukesh Rishi, Rao Ramesh, Urvashi and Brahmaji; Rating: **
because his second attempt is even worse than the first. The story follows the maverick police officer Gabbar Singh, who has a great sense
of humor, and is transferred to the fictional town Rattanpur, where he takes on the oppressive land grabber Bhairav Singh and his gang head on.
It follows a simple pattern action, romance, comedy - with ample crowd-pleasing moments for Kalyan’s fans to celebrate. Towards the fag end, the film gets even more annoying with the musical face-off with a rival gang.
An ensemble cast featuring the likes of Tisca Chopra, Rao Ramesh and Pooja Ramachandran are wasted in silly roles. Kajal Aggarwal as the princess is beautiful, impeccably dressed, but hardly has anything to do other than, you know, just look pretty. Sharad Kelkar is fierce as the antagonist, and when used sincerely can be effective, but he needs to work hard on lip-syncing his dialogues. Even though Pawan Kalyan the actor shines in “Sardaar Gabbar Singh”, the writer fails miserably, and there’s so much he needs to learn from this debacle. As the gun-toting Sardaar, he fails to hit the bull’s eye.

Stars receive top awards
President Pranab Mukherjee awarded Rajinikanth with Padma Vibhushan, Priyanka Chopra with Padma Shri and tennis player Sania Mirza with Padma Bhushan IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he packed Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 12 reverberated to applause when superstar Rajinikanth walked up to receive the Padma Vibhushan from President Pranab Mukherjee who also conferred Padma awards on actress Priyanka Chopra and tennis player Sania Mirza. The awards, conferred in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, were given away to prominent personalities from different walks of life, as the assembled gathering, including relatives and friends of the awardees, kept on clapping and cheering. Looking dapper in a beige churidar kurta teamed with a grey Nehru jacket, Rajinikanth acknowledged the big round of applause and cheering from those gathered with a big smile. His wife Latha Rajinikanth was also among the invitees. The southern super star enjoys a massive fan following and is endearingly called ‘Thalaivar’ by his well-wishers. He has worked both in Hindi and Southern films over his three decade long journey as an actor. Priyanka Chopra, who has garnered international acclaim with her stint in the American TV series “Quantico”, came attired in a lime green sari to receive her Padma Shri. She acknowledged the appre-
Kate’s dress leads to website crash
NEW DELHI: Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s vibrant and fresh look in a creation by popular Indian designer Anita Dongre has caught the eye of fashionistas around the world. The designer says the British Royal’s decision to flaunt her creation has given such a “new high” to her collection that her e-commerce website came crashing. Dongre’s dress — a long, breezy printed tunic with Mughal details — looked perfect on Middleton, who is looked at as a style icon globally, during the first day of her maiden visit to India.

ciation from the crowd but kept her eyes downwards while returning to her seat. Priyanka, who looked stunning, was being followed by admirers after the function was over. In fact security persons had to escort her from the main hall to the other room. The former Miss World has hit
international headlines with her role of an FBI agent Alex Parrish in Quantico. The actress, who is currently riding high on the success of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, has even bagged a Hollywood film, Baywatch, alongside Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Sania, who took to twitter to comment: “Humbled. Honored.
And truly thankful .. #PadmaBhushan,” was also turned out smartly in a long pinkish dress for the occasion. She received her Padma Bhushan from the president. Sania is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. Sania and her partner Swiss legend Martina Hingis took the tennis world by storm for much of last year with a 41-match winning streak which finally came to an end with a shock loss at the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open earlier this year. The Indo-Swiss pair won 10 titles together, including nine consecutive ones. On April 11 night, Sania was also honored at the NRI of the
Year Award 2016 where she was conferred with the Global Indian Icon of the year award. The president presented five Padma Vibhushan, 11 Padma Bhushan and 36 Padma Shri awards at the function. Three of the listed Padma Shri awardees could not make it to the function. Padma Awards, the most prestigious honors in the country, for the year of 2016 were announced in January this year and were conferred in two ceremonies. On March 28, actors Ajay Devgn, Anupam Kher and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar received their Padma awards along with many others.
‘The Jungle Book’: Visually breathtaking Film: “The Jungle Book”; Director: Jon Favreau; Cast: Neel Sethi, Ritesh Rajan; Voices of: Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, Christopher Walken, Garry Shandling and Brighton Rose
A
bundant with moral lessons, Rudyard Kipling’s tales of young Mowgli’s adventures with anthropomorphic animals in the Indian jungle have always fascinated kids and have revived childhood memories for adults. Whatever the reasons, the audience has always waited with baited breath for a Jungle Book release. And, the much awaited Disney production with its live action-anima-
tion, is a brilliantly mounted film that enthralls you for most of its runtime. Visually, the film is breathtakingly stunning. Director Jon Favreau makes his film palpable with its wonderfully detailed characters in the dense jungle which anyone would swear is real. A tale of self-discovery, narrated
from Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), the panther’s point of view, you witness Mowgli (Neel Sethi) in the thick of the jungle. His experiences are captivating and enthralling. The story remains the same: of how, an orphaned human boy, raised by wolves, Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o) and Akela (Giancarlo Esposito) along with their packs, live in har-
mony with the other animals of the jungle. Till one fine day, Shere Khan, the scarred tiger drives Mowgli away from the jungle to join his own species. How Mowgli survives in the wilderness, forms the crux of the narration. Justin Marks’s script does not veer too far from its source material. The plot has limited dramatic tension. The screenplay is well-designed in the typical Disney fashion with each character being given its due screen time. While every animal is engaging, it is Mowgli’s interaction with the hedonistic Baloo that brings life into the otherwise dry narration. It is interesting to watch him con Mowgli into getting him his winter supply of honey. There is not one boring scene, despite the fact that the tension is mild and frisky throughout the film.

‘We shouldn’t make big deal about women empowerment’
A
ctress Neha Dhupia says she doesn’t understand the hue and cry around women’s empowerment in showbiz as change has already seeped in. The former beauty queen feels that “the more we talk about it, the more we sound like we need it”. “I really don’t think that we should make a big deal about women empowerment because the more we talk about it the more we sound like we need it and we don’t need it. I think it (demand for empowerment) is just something that is used by a certain set of people,” Neha told IANS.

‘I respect Anant Ambani’s willpower’
S
uperstar Salman Khan, who is known for his fit physique, says he has immense “respect” for Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son Anant, who underwent a major weight loss session in just 18 months. The Dabangg actor, tweeted: “So happy to see Anant Ambani, lots of respect and so happy for him. Takes a lot of willpower to loose 108 kg in 18 months.” The “Wanted” star also shared a selfie of himself along with the 21-year-old. Anant lost an average of six kgs every month – and that too, the natural way, an official said on April 9. For this, like his illustrious family, he kept a ‘target’ – losing fat and getting absolutely fit by his 21st birthday, and achieved it. To stick to his commitment, he followed a strict regimen of zero-sugar, low-carb diet, along with adequate intake of fat and protein.
Talking about herself, she added: “I am an independent single woman and I don’t need to be empowered by anything, except that drive to do better everyday in life. So, I really don’t understand what the hue and cry is about.” Pointing out a positive change, the actress shared: “If you are talking about roles, then it is all changing. Now, there are so many author-backed roles for women.” “As a citizen of the country, the one thing that I would pledge or want people to provide us with is safety and nothing else. Women are at par as to men.”

Travel agent swindles Pakistani immigrants Armed robbers attack BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN , NY-- A Brooklyn travel agent took advantage of dozens of Pakistani immigrants who shelled out thousands of dollars for flights that were never purchased, prosecutors announced on April 7. Juniad Mirza faces up to 15 years in prison for using his companies, Pearl USA Travel, Inc. and Travel Treat, Inc. to steal over $350,000 from 25 people over a span of four years. “Many of the victims were hardworking Pakistani immigrants who trusted the defendant and were cheated out of a lifelong dream of taking a pilgrimage to Mecca,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson. From July 2011 to September 2015, Mirza advertised discounted trips and tickets in Urdu-language newspapers such as the Pakistan Post and Urdu Times and in pamphlets distributed in mosques. Mirza, 50, gained trust with his victims by speaking their native language and convinced them to spend between $1,000 and $14,000 for the trips. Some allegedly spent $6,000-per-

only booked a one-way flight and were left stranded at the airport in Pakistan. Prosecutors said that the investigation was ongoing and more victims were coming forward. Mirza may face additional charges to the 31-count indictment. During Mirza’s arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court, several of the victims were in the courtroom and smiled as the judge set bail at $250,000. He was also ordered to turn over his passport.
Green Cards sold in NY for $300-$3,000 BY A STAFF WRITER ACKSON HTS, NY -- Green Cards, the document which is testament to permanent residency in the United States, is being sold on the streets of Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, for $300-$3,000, says a report by Fox 5 News. All types of businesses are booming on Roosevelt Avenue, even the illegal ones, says the report. “It’s easy to get a Resident Alien card, better known as a green card, from street corner hustlers. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. The $300 version will not be as good as the $3,000 version,” Lisa Evers of Fox News said. Evers then went to the Department of Homeland Security Office of Investigations to find out more about this. Special Agent in Charge Angel Melendez told her fake green cards and documents were part of a bigger problem. “Our true concerns are those people or those individuals that obtain these fake documents to continue to perpetrate criminal activity and pose a threat to national security,” Melendez says.
J
Melendez says technology advances have enabled forgers to make very realisticlooking fakes and that green cards are not used just to get work but also cash in on fraudulent welfare and even veterans benefits. “With a green card there are certain benefits you can obtain. You can be able to open bank accounts and you can be able to gain lawful employment,” Melendez says.
Homeland Security investigators work closely with local district attorneys, like Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. Last year, Vance indicted an English teacher who allegedly bilked foreign students of tens of thousands of dollars for promising green cards. “If you find a person who has a fake document, you need to report it to law enforcement,” Melendez says.
Indian student killed in off-campus firing BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ– Shani Patel, a 21-yearold Indian-origin student studying at Rutgers University, was shot dead and his roommate seriously injured after unknown assailants opened fire at their apartment outside the university campus in New Jersey on April 10. According to Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Patel, who was pursuing third-year economics major at the university, was shot by two unidentified people who entered her off-campus apartment in Newark. The Emergency medical personnel who reached the spot declared Patel dead and moved her roommate to University Hospital where he underwent a surgery.
N
Shani Patel The authorities confirmed that Patel’s roommate was present during the shooting and is seriously wounded. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
According to various other reports, the roommate of Patel is believed to be a 23-year old alumnus of the university who graduated last year. The New York Times reported that the shooting was a targeted attempted to kill Patel. About 12,000 students live in the downtown campus of the university and the Rutgers Police department said that they need not be alarmed. In a letter addressing the student community of the university, the Chancellor Nancy Cantor expressed her grief and shock at Patel’s death. According to the Rutgers police, the attackers in their early 20s soon fled the scene after the shooting. The Essex County Sheriff Crimestoppers Program has offered up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest of the shooters.
Amrik Singh Bal
BY A STAFF WRITER RESNO, CA -- A 70-year-old man was bloodied and bruised after armed robbers found him and his wife not far from their Fresno home. The robbers struck after sunset on April 11 on the northwest side of town, near the intersection of Polk and Acacia. The neighborhood doesn’t feel so much like home now for the man and his 69-year-old wife. The victims were taking their nightly walk along Polk when up ahead in the distance they noticed three young men turning the corner and walking towards them. At that point, they turned around. They walked back in the other direction but not fast enough to get away. Two of those guys caught up and one of them was armed. “He pulled out a folding knife and told the male victim he wanted money and his cell phone,” said Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez. “He repeated that three times.” The man didn’t have any money, but he gave up his phone. As soon as he did, the guy without a knife launched an attack of his own. “He just rushes and kind of cold cocks the victim in the face, really for no reason,” Gomez said. The victim fell to the ground as blood spilled all over his clothes. The robbers patted down his wife to make sure she had nothing of value and then they took off. Just a couple blocks from the scene of the attack is a new Sikh temple and members there have been on high alert in light of recent assaults classified as hate crimes against Sikhs. Alexis Mendoza and Daniel Wilson,Jjr., are also charged with a hate crime for attacking Amrik Singh Bal, including by running him down in a car -- an act caught on surveillance video from a home in the area. But the police say this one is not a hate crime. “It looks like young robbers picking on older people. That’s what the motivation is here,” Gomez said. No matter the motivation, the attack is unsettling to the Sikh community and the 70-year-old victim has the injuries to prove it.

10 schools targeted by bomb threats BY A STAFF WRITER ASSAIC, NJ -- Authorities were investigating bomb threats made against at least 10 schools in and around Bergen and Passaic counties on April 13 morning. Englewood, Fair Lawn, Paramus, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Leonia, Lodi, Midland Park, and Elmwood Park reported threats. The police were searching the schools but nothing harmful was immediately discovered.

Indian researcher leads planet finder mission
BY A STAFF WRITER TATE COLLEGE, PA-- After an intense national competition, a Penn State University research group led by Suvrath Mahadevan, an Indian American assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State, has been selected by NASA’s Astrophysics Division to build a $10-million, cuttingedge instrument to detect planets orbiting stars outside our solar system. When completed in 2019, the instrument will be the centerpiece of a partnership between NASA and the National Science Foundation called the NASA-NSF Exoplanet Observational Research program. “We are privileged to have been selected to build this new instrument for the exoplanet community,” Mahadevan told journalists. “This is a testament to our multiinstitutional and interdisciplinary team of talented graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists.”
S
Prof. Suvrath Mahadevan
The instrument, named NEID, will detect planets by the tiny gravitational tug they exert on their stars. “NEID will be more stable than any existing spectrograph, allowing astronomers around the world to make the precise measurements of the motions of nearby, sun-like stars,” said Jason Wright, associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State and a member of the science advisory team. The NEID team is a multi-institutional collaboration, consisting of exoplanet scientists and engineers from Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, University of Colorado, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Macquarie University in Australia, Australian Astronomical Observatory, and Physical Research Laboratory in India. “NEID is a transformative capability in the search for worlds like our own,” Mahadevan said.

21 charged in bogus student visa scam BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- Federal authorities in New Jersey have arrested 21 people in what they say is a visa scam that involved more than 1,000 foreign nationals. The US attorney’s office announced on April 5 that it created a fake university in 2013 staffed by undercover agents and which had instructors, classes or curriculum. They allegedly were given cash for helping the purported students in the visa process. The defendants are charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud and conspiracy to harbor aliens for profit. The second charge carries a maximum prison term of 10 years. Most of the foreign nationals who benefited from the alleged scheme hailed from China and India. US Attorney Paul Fishman says the students have been identified and will be dealt with by immigration authorities.

Denver company in dock over head scarves BY A STAFF WRITER ENVER, CO -- A federal jury will decide whether a ground services operator at Denver’s airport discriminated against Muslim employees by not allowing them to wear head scarves. Jurors in Denver began hearing evidence in the lawsuit brought against JetStream Ground Services by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on April 11. The EEOC sued the Jupiter, Floridabased company on behalf of six Muslim women in 2013. It claims the company violated their civil rights by refusing to hire them, firing them or cutting their hours for following their religious beliefs. Sources said an attorney for the company, Raymond Deeny, denied the allegations during opening statements. He said the company laid off several employees when it lost a contract and twice offered to rehire the women but only one accepted the offer.

Will Purvi Patel’s plea fall on deaf ears?
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- Come May 23, the Indiana Supreme Court will hear the oral arguments in the Purvi Patel foeticide case in which a 33-year-old Indian American woman has been sentenced to a stiff 20year prison term after being convicted of illegally inducing the abortion of her foetus. But the harsh verdict delivered a year ago has been stirring a hornet’s nest, triggering a debate on the misuse of a foeticide law that was not intended to punish women who try to end their pregnancies. No wonder, women’s organizations have been raising a hue and cry day in and day out. Indeed, the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, the South Asian Americans Leading Together, the National Advocates for Pregnant Women and the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice have backed the appeal filed by Patel’s lawyers. 5 years’ probation Patel, a resident of Granger, Indiana, was initially sentenced to a six-year prison term for foeticide, a 20-year prison term for felony child neglect, with a 10-year suspended sentence on the neglect count, to be followed by five years’ of probation, which results in total of 41 years’ worth of punishment for what may as well have been a miscarriage. Her case has caused an international controversy about the prosecution of pregnant women accused of intentionally or recklessly causing miscarriages or stillbirth. She is the first woman in the United States to be charged, convicted, and sentenced on a foeticide charge. According to prosecutors, Patel was 28 weeks pregnant, just two months away from being able to naturally give birth to her baby. Instead, she self-induced her abortion, cut the umbilical cord, put the foetus in a grocery bag and tossed it into a trash can behind her family-owned Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurant. Patel was a child any parent would dream of. For eight years, which means from the age of 23 when lesser mortals would be busy in fun and frolic, she ran her family’ business Moe’s Southwest Grill. She worked for seven days a week, round the year, then came back home, took care of cooking at home and also managed her elderly grandparents who were in their nineties. Conservative family Eight long years, she did it nonstop

as the main support base of her ageing parents. She could not think of marriage, that too from outside the conservative Hindu circle of her family. And then in 2013, her life turned upside down. To put it simply, while in her unmarried lonely state, she had sex with a non-Hindu, non-Asian, co-worker, which resulted in an unwanted pregnancy. With her family’ conservative background, she was frightened and scared of not just society but even her own parents and the intense rebuke that she would face for that. Not surprisingly, she was completely lost and dumbfounded and did not know what to do. She knew that she would not get any support from her family, nor the
Cops alert as fake $100 bills are in circulation BY A STAFF WRITER ANESVILLE, WI -- On April 13, the Janesville police were dispatched to three different area businesses after receiving reports that counterfeit $100 bills were being used. Schnucks, a grocery store on Creston Park Drive, accepted a counterfeit $100 bill with the serial code F50082829A. The police believe the same person tried to use similar bills at the CVS Pharmacy and the Walgreens drug store, both on Milton Avenue. Those businesses refused the bills. The police are urging area businesses
man who was the cause of her situation, nor could she run the risk of going to medical clinic lest her family’s name be disgraced in society. She turned to private help, spoke to one of her friends and then used internet to try and find ways to carry out abortion. Ultimately in approximately 20th week of her pregnancy, her foetus was aborted in her bathroom and then scared as hell, she wrapped it in a bag and put it away in a dumpster near her restaurant. Unfortunately the bleeding was not stopping and she went for medical help to a hospital. What she got in return was an accusation and a further trial, dominated more by the desire to deliver an agenda of the conservative society, which changed her life. Patel was charged in 2013 for ‘feticide’ and ‘child neglect’, was convicted and is now serving a 20 years prison term. Laws against feticide were drafted to prevent violence against pregnant women by a third party assailant, be it a significant other, a spouse, a family member or a stranger. Alas, here the same law was used against the woman herself, the very person the law was supposed to protect. Contradictory charges Furthermore, she was accused of both ‘feticide’ and ‘child neglect’, two entirely contradictory situations at the same time, to ensure that she would be convicted of one crime or the other, come what may. She became only the second woman in US, charged for killing her foetus and the first one to be convicted.
Advocates in Indiana and people around the nation have rallied around Patel. Reproductive rights organizations called the prosecution a back-door attempt to criminalize women for abortions and a misguided use of feticide laws - which are intended to protect pregnant women and punish people who harm them, such as abusive partners. As it stands now, laws that criminalize abortion mainly target doctors. Patel’s case represents a new effort to punish women as well. Moreover, the prosecution and conviction of Patel set a precedent for punishing women who use medication abortion, who give birth at home and their baby does not survive, or who suffer a miscarriage or other pregnancy complication. Abortion laws As Shivana Jorawar, a reproductive health and justice policy advocate and a board member of Jahajee Sisters, a New York-based organization empowering IndoCaribbean women, advises, it is time to raise one’s voice on sex-selective abortion laws, and learn about how pregnant women continue to be criminalized. Even Deepa Iyer, noted author and former director of SAALT, wants women to host a discussion in their communities about the impact of Patel’s case and reproductive rights affecting Asian American women. Patel’s case opens the door for any woman who expresses doubt about her pregnancy to be charged if she miscarries or has a stillbirth. It’s a terrifying thought, but one that is already impacting real women.

Indian mariticide’s appeal rejected
Shreya Patel
BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX -- The Texas Third Court of Appeals on April 7 upheld the sentence of Shriya Patel, who was convicted in 2014 of arson for setting fire to her Indian American husband, shortly after she arrived in the US. Patel is serving 20 years in prison for setting fire to Bimal Patel on April 17, 2012. According to the police, Patel had recently married Bimal in an arranged marriage in India and arrived in the US just seven days before the fatal crime. She lured her new husband into the bathtub of their apartment home, promising him a sensual massage with hot oils. Instead, the new bride poured gasoline on her husband and set him on fire. A neighbor, hearing the husband’s pleas for help, called the police, who transported the battered young man to a nearby hospital. Bimal Patel was put into a forced coma and died at the hospital four months later. Shriya Patel was charged with felony murder and arson. Two years later, a Texas jury found her not guilty of the murder charge, but guilty of arson. The defendant’s lawyers claimed that Bimal Patel was attempting to commit suicide because of his financial troubles and his new bride was simply following his orders.

sing cocaine and alcohol together at the same time can lead to an increased risk of committing a suicide, warns a study. According to researchers, specifically those using both, the chance of attempting suicide again were 2.4 times greater than among people in the study who were not. "However, reporting both alcohol misuse and cocaine use was significantly associated with a future
suicide attempt," said lead study author Sarah Arias from Alpert Medical School of Brown University in the US. "Patients who have potentially comorbid alcohol and cocaine use may
be at a higher risk. Findings like these can be useful for informing suicide risk assessment," Arias added. Of the entire study population, 298 misused alcohol, 72 were using cocaine and 41 were using both. The researchers found was that although people in the study reported misusing many different substances, including marijuana, prescription painkillers, tranquilizers and stimulants, but only cocaine and alcohol appeared to have a significant association with suicide risk.

Beware! Daily stress can lead to diabetes People with diabetes are regularly stressed and are more likely to have poor blood glucose control VIVEK SINGH CHAUHAN, NEW DELHI
B
e it physical or emotional, taking unnecessary stress can not only give you headache or neck pain but, if left unattended for long, can also trigger elevation in blood sugar levels leading to Type 2 diabetes, health experts have warned. Owing to changes in lifestyle and daily routine, stress is now seen as a reason behind several health hazards, including the rise in diabetes in India. Marked stress causes release of several stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol which, in turn,

Similarly, blood pressure elevation becomes elevated constantly. Stress also causes change in eating pattern, resulting in ‘binge eating’, thus increasing weight which may also add to elevation of blood sugar,” Dr. Anoop Misra, Chairman, Fortis C-DOC, told IANS. Stress can affect diabetes control, both directly and indirectly. It is widely recognized that people with diabetes are regularly stressed and are more likely to have poor blood glucose control.
e-cigarettes can harm lungs in asthmatic young smokers LONDON: e-cigarette smoking is increasingly promoted as a safer alternative to cigarette smoking but a team of researchers has found that e-cigarettes have immediate effects on pulmonary function in mild asthmatic young smokers. The findings showed that e-cigarette smoking caused acute pulmonary function impairment, lasting for less than 30 minutes after smoking. “The results show that as it happens with cigarette smoking, e-cigarette smoking has more deleterious shortterm effects on asthmatics,” said Andreas Lappas from the Hellenic Cancer Society in Athens, Greece.
