urkish warplanes on November 24 shot down a Russian SU-24 fighter jet near the Syrian border after it violated Turkish airspace. One of its two pilots was killed and the other was captured, media reports said. According to Turkish authorities, two F-16 warplanes shot down the Russian jet after it failed to heed at least 10 warnings within the rules of engagement, state-run Hurriyet Daily News reported. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said everyone must respect
Turkey’s right to protect its borders. “Turkey holds no grudges toward its neighboring countries. Undoubtedly, we did our best to prevent the recent incident,” Xinhua quoted Erdogan as saying on November 24 in Ankara. He explained that Turkish F-16 jets “intercepted an unidentified warplane according to globally acknowledged rules of engagement.” The Rusian defense ministry refuted the claim that the fighter violate the Turkish airspace. The jet crashed into tents in Latakia’s Yamadi village near the Syrian border where Turkmens are currently staying, according to Turk-
men sources. Its two pilots were seen landing with the aid of parachutes, witnesses said. One of the pilots was killed and the other was captured by Turkmen forces in the region. Video footage showed the plane crashing into mountains in Latakia province. The Turkish General Staff released the radar trace analysis of the Russian jet. It shows the plane entered the Turkish airspace over the southern province of Hatay while circling over northern Syria. However, the Russian defense ministry said the downed jet, which was at an altitude of 6,000 meters, did not violate Turkish airspace.

He said the plane was shot down by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet in Syrian airspace and the Su-24 fell in Syria four km away from the Turkish border. “The Russian pilots and the warplane have in no way threatened Turkey. This is obvious,” Putin said,
describing the incident as “a the back”. Putin said the incident wo have serious consequences Moscow-Ankara relations as sia would not tolerate crime what happened today”. “We have always regarde not only as a close neighbo also a friendly state. I don’t who needed today’s inciden pen, but Russia didn’t need case,” said Putin. The president promised t fully analyse everything that happened, criticizing Ankara contacting NATO instead of lishing necessary communic with Russia immediately. “As if it were us shooting Turkish plane and not vice v said Putin.
The ministry stressed that “throughout its flight, the aircraft remained exclusively above Syrian territory,” BBC reported. “Objective monitoring data shows it,” the ministry added. Turkey is a member of the NATO military alliance, which views an attack on one member as an attack
on all. A NATO official on November 24 that th was monitoring the event “We are in contact wit authorities and will have see how it develops,” th said. Turkey has warned a lations of its airspace by R Syrian aircraft.

S President Barack Obama will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the first day of the Paris climate talks on November 30 to “generate momentum toward the successful outcome.” Obama’s meetings with Indian, Chinese and French leaders were intended to “send a clear signal” that “he is going to be working with the key players to try to get this done,” White House Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said on November 24. Starting his day with a meeting with Xi, Obama will hold a bilateral meeting with Modi after a lunch hosted by French President Francois Hollande for the leaders attending the Nov 30-Dec 11 UN climate summit attended by 140 nations.
BRIEFS: Comic Ansari mocks Jindal one last time WASHINGTON: Louisiana’s IndianAmerican Governor Bobby Jindal is out of the US presidential race, but that did not prevent Indian origin comedian Aziz Ansari from having some fun at his cost. Bobby Jindal Ansari, who earlier mocked Jindal’s presidential run, was back on The Tonight Show to talk about his next steps in life, including a hit TV show and trying for president again in 2020. Ansari-as-Jindal clarified that he’s only suspended his campaign, in much the same way that Han Solo was frozen in carbonite in The Empire Strikes Back. He remains weirdly optimistic about his presidential bid, and has already picked a 2020 slogan.

s his call to create a database to track Muslims in America created a political furore, Donald Trump said the idea was not his, while presidential rival Ben Carson suggested a database for all immigrants. As Republicans and Democrats rivals alike blasted the database proposal as “abhorrent” and “shocking”, the real estate mogul said the notion that he would implement a database as a way to follow Muslims was not his. “I didn’t suggest a database, a reporter did,” Trump tweeted. “We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America.” In response to a question from NBC News on November 19 night

whether there should be a “database system that tracks Muslims”, Trump said “there should be a lot of systems beyond databases” and returned to his pet idea of building a wall across the US border. When asked whether it was something a Trump White House would
implement, he said, “Oh, I would certainly implement. Absolutely.” Trump has also said that he would close mosques and would not rule out the idea of giving Muslims identification cards noting their religion. “I find it abhorrent that Donald Trump is suggesting we register people,” rival Republican candidate Jeb Bush said on CNBC. “You’re talking about internment. You’re talking about closing mosques. You’re talking about registering people. And that’s just wrong — I don’t care about campaigns,” Bush said. Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton tweeted that the idea of tracking people based on their religion is “shocking rhetoric” and “should be denounced by all seeking to lead this country.”

IS threatens to blow up White House
WASHINGTON: The Islamic State terrorist group in a new video released last week threatened to bomb the White House and launch more attacks in Paris. The six-minute video titled “Paris Before Rome” was produced by the IS in the Dijlah province of Iraq, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute based in Washington. The video showed an IS fighter threatening to attack French monuments and vowing to strike the White House.
Defying Obama, US House votes to halt Syrian refugees IANS, WASHINGTON
D
efying President Barack Obama’s veto threat, the US House easily passed a bill to halt the inflow of Syrian and Iraqi refugees until key national security agencies certify they don’t pose a security risk. The last week House vote in the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks on Paris was 289-137, with 47 Democrats joining 242 Republicans in favor of the bill, just nine votes short of a two-thirds majority need-
ed to override Obama’s veto. It also faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where Democrat Minority Leader Harry Reid said he will try to block the bill. But the high number of Democrats voting for the bill was worrisome for the White House. The administration’s veto threat “baffles me”, Republican House speaker Paul Ryan said, “especially given the fact that his own law enforcement top officials testified that there are gaps in this refugee program.”
Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson praised the House for passing a bill that could limit the intake of Syrian refugees, calling it a positive step. He
compared safeguarding Americans from Islamic terrorists who may sneak into the country as refugees to parents protecting their children from rabid dogs.

ndia and Singapore signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership and nine accords on November 24, the concluding day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to this city state, when he called Singapore the Asia’s lion. Modi’s day began with a breakfast meeting with Singaporean leaders, met President Tony Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He witnessed the signing of the accords, attended a lunch hosted by Lee. Modi laid a wreath at the INA memorial marker, visited the Insti-
tute of Technical Education involved in skill development, and addressed the India-Singapore Economic Convention. Singapore was the second leg of his visit that earlier took him to Malaysia for the Asean-India Summit and the East Asia Summit. According to an official statement, Modi and Lee signed the joint declaration to elevate bilateral relations to a “strategic partnership to deepen and broaden engagement in existing areas of cooperation and catalyze new ones ranging from political, defense and security cooperation to economic, cultural and people to people contact”.
Besides, two agreements on defense cooperation and loan of artifacts from India to Singapore, two executive programme/operationalization documents on arts and culture, and white-shipping, and five memorandums of agreement (MoUs) on cyber security, civil aviation, knowledge exchange in the field of planning, urban planning, and combating drug trafficking were also signed. The two prime ministers also released two postal stamps showing Rashtrapati Bhavan and Istana, the Singaporean presidential palace, marking 50 years of both countries’ diplomatic relations.
SINGAPORE, Nov 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sought greater engagement of the diaspora in making the country strong, pointing to the large requirement of foreign direct investment and stating that his only task was development that wipes tears from the eyes of the poor. Addressing a gathering of the Indian diaspora at the Singapore Expo here, Modi spoke of his government’s goals of providing round-the-clock power by 2022, generating 40 percent energy from non-fossil sources by 2030 and generating 175 GW of renewable energy. The prime minister was greeted by slogans of “Modi, Modi” many times during his speech.
Wearing a kurta, churidar pyjama and a light-blue half jacket, Modi spoke for over one hour in Hindi, drawing on the country’s culture but also emphasizing that it was important to script history and not rest on the laurels of the past. Modi evoked smiles with some of his remarks. “India is a great country but it has a lot to learn from Singapore. The diversity that is in India, it is in Singapore but everyone is a Singaporean and is working shoulder to shoulder to build the country. We have to learn a lot from Singapore,” he said. Modi said he had started his journey with one task before him and needed the blessings of Indians in the country and outside.

ndia and Malaysia on November 23 agreed to deepen defense and security cooperation and expand bilateral trade while signing three accords in the areas of cyber security, culture and infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the third and last day of his visit to Malysia that marked the beginning of the bilateral phase, held delegation-level talks with Malaysian Premier Najib Razak, following which the two leaders held a joint press conference. Modi attended the 13th Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)-India Summit and the 10th East Asia Summit here. “I am particularly grateful to you (Razak) for our security cooperation,” Modi said at the press confer-

ence. “It underlines our shared commitment to deal with our security challenges. We will continue to deepen our cooperation in this area,” he said. He said the recent spate of attacks
in different countries, apart from the “ceaseless terrorist attempts against India and Afghanistan”, were a reminder of the global nature of this threat. “We will also make our defense
cooperation stronger, including for advancing maritime security and strengthening disaster response in our region,” the Indian prime minister said. He also said that the agreement to cooperate in cyber-security between the two countries was very important. “As our lives get more networked, this is emerging as one of the most serious concerns of our age,” he stated. While the cyber security agreement was signed between the Indian Computer Emergency Team (CERT-IN) and Cyber Security, Malaysia, the one on culture was inked between the ministries of culture of the two countries. The infrastructure development agreement was concluded between India’s NITI Aayog and Malaysia’s Performance Management and Delivery
Unit (Pemandu). The Indian prime minister also called for scaling up trade and investment relations with Malaysia. The two sides agreed “to promote joint collaboration, especially in infrastructure and construction sectors, and to facilitate joint projects and collaboration between the private sectors of the two countries, in line with the new developmental and business initiatives undertaken by India, such as the Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities and Skill Development that offered significant investment opportunities for Malaysian businesses”, the joint statement issued at the end of the talks said. Modi and Razak later jointly inaugurated a Torana Gate, a traditional gateway to Hindu and Buddhist temples, here.

Aamir stirs hornet’s nest
The actor-producer’s candid remarks on rising intolerance in India at an awards event in New Delhi set Twitter abuzz and left the film fraternity divided IANS, NEW DELHI/MUMBAI
We love India, won't leave: Aamir Khan
B
ollywood superstar Aamir Khan on November 24 found himself in the centre of a political storm over his remarks on intolerance, with the BJP sharply criticizing him and the Congress stoutly defending him. The actor-producer’s candid remarks at an awards event in New Delhi the previous day set Twitter abuzz and left the film fraternity divided. Aamir, 50, had said: “For the last six to eight months, there has been a growing despondency I would say. Kiran (wife Kiran Rao) and I have lived all our life in India. When I sit at home and talk to Kiran, for the first time she said, ‘Should we move out of India?’ Now that’s a very disastrous and a big comment to make to me.” Union Minister Kiren Rijiju sought to contradict Aamir’s assertion and said: “The record shows that the number of incidents of communal violence in the country have come down since NDA came to power. Just to make a blatant statement that during NDA rule, the country has become intolerant, it unnecessarily tarnishes the image of the country.” The Congress, however, supported Aamir, with party vice president Rahul Gandhi suggesting that the Narendra Modi government reach out to the people to know why they felt disturbed. Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “Instead of branding all those who question the government and Modiji as unpatriotic, anti-national or ‘motivated’, the government would do better to reach out to people to understand what’s disturbing them.” A complaint was lodged against the PK star by short filmmaker Ullhas PR with Delhi Police over the

remarks. Meanwhile, hundreds of activists of the Hindu Sena staged a loud demonstration outside Khan’s residence in Mumbai. And stoking further the ongoing debate on the rising intolerance, Yogi Adityanath said that people were free to leave as it will reduce the country’s population. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal supported the actor, and tweeted: “BJP should stop silencing voices through abuses and threats. It’s time central government took concrete steps to instill a sense of security amongst people.”
Remembering Guru Nanak
MUMBAI: Trying to put to rest a huge row over his comment on “growing despondency”, Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan said on Wednesday that he and his wife love India and have no intention of leaving the country. Aamir said in a statement that while he stood by the interview, the avalanche of criticism directed at him and his wife Kiran Rao only proved what he had stated about the situation in the country. “First, let me state categorically that neither I nor my wife Kiran have any intention of leaving the country. We never did, and nor would we like to in future,” he said in a statement. “Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. “Secondly, I stand by everything that I have said in my interview. “To all those people who are calling me anti-national, I would like to say that I am proud to be Indian, and I do not need anyone's endorsement for that...To all the people who have stood by me, thank you.”
Film fraternity divided over remarks MUMBAI: Several members of the film fraternity, including Anupam Kher, Ram Gopal Varma, Ashoke Pandit and Paresh Rawal slammed Aamir, saying that he must spread hope and not fear. There also were some who backed Aamir — music composer Vishal Dadlani of the VishalShekhar duo, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta and veteran award-winning director Saeed Mirza, to name a
few. Dadlani said: “More power to your voice, @aamir_khan Sir! This is OUR country, it belongs to ALL Indians. Not to rabid lunatics from any party/religion.”
NEWS DIGEST Maggi tests can’t go on: Consumer court NEW DELHI: Following the Rs.640crore class action suit filed by the government against Nestle India, the apex consumer court on November 24 said “unending testing of Maggi samples cannot go on”. A bench of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) reserved its order on the decision on the tests. The bench said it would decide later on the fresh tests on 31 samples of Maggi noodles, as requested by the government counsel. Although the court agreed to having the samples, identified by the government counsel, tested, it reserved the order and said the decision would be made later.
Sheena murder: Peter Mukerjea arrested
NEW DELHI: Former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, arrested over his involvement in the Sheena Bora murder, was on November 24 brought from Mumbai and then taken to the CBI headquarters in Delhi for further questioning, sources said. Peter was arrested three months after the discovery of Sheena’s remains in a forest near Mumbai. Sources said Peter, who was from Mumbai to Delhi early on November 24 by a special team of the CBI, may undergo a lie detection test at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. ujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has blamed the opposition for turning her own Patel community against her through the “reservation conspiracy” to extract political benefit during the local body elections. She, however, claimed that the community was returning to the BJP where it belonged. Trying to strike an emotional pitch at an election rally and a road show in her hometown Patan and
neighboring Mehsana in north Gujarat’s Patel-dominated region, the chief minister said: “They (the Congress) are targeting a woman chief minister. There is a conspiracy to have the Patidars against me.” “According to constitutional provisions, no government can increase or decrease the percentage of reservation to those who are getting it. If I try to make amendments in the prevailing reservation system, it would be my turn to go to jail.” Patel said the opposition Congress was “frustrated” and was using the Patels to fight against the

Bihar alliance one-off case
There are far too many divisions among the anti-BJP parties for them to come together. Even the newly found camaraderie between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav is fragile AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
I
t will be a mistake to see the congregation of various leaders opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony as the beginning of a ‘mahagathbandhan’ or a grand alliance at the national level. Not only are their bases confined to different parts of the country, their respective provincial egos and ambitions are exacerbated by overt enmity as between the Trinamool Congress and the communists. If any reminder was needed about their lack of commonality apart from their dislike of the BJP, it was Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s decision to stay away. On the other hand, the Shiv Sena’s presence underlined the selfcontradictory nature of the gathering. The concept of a mahagathbandhan gained in importance after the success of the experiment in Bihar. But Bihar was a one-time affair. In any case, the idea is no more than a rehash of the united or third fronts which were favored earlier. The difference is that while those groups were directed against the Congress, the target of the latest one is the BJP, which has replaced the tattered Grand Old Party as the numero uno in Indian politics. However, as the back-and-forth statements of Akhilesh Yadav on the subject, and his absenteeism in
(L-R) Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Patna, show, there isn’t much chance of such an alliance taking shape in his state prior to the 2017 elections. Even if similar alliances are set up in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, which go to the polls next year, they will be too rickety to replicate the Bihar experiment against the powerful regional leaders of the two states. Besides, the BJP is of hardly any importance in these states. It’s different in Assam, but there isn’t much chance of an anti-BJP alliance unless the Congress, in its desperation over losing sitting legis-
lators to the BJP, teams up with perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal of the United Democratic Front. What such speculation indicates is that there are far too many divisions among the anti-BJP parties for them to come together. Bihar was an exception because the two former foes, and current friends, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad, demonstrated remarkable maturity to forge the unity of their parties, the Janata Dal-United and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Few would have thought it possible and, even today, it is
believed that their camaraderie is too fragile to last. Arguably, it is some kind of a message which the two leaders received from the ground level, combined with their intense political antipathy towards Narendra Modi, which cemented their alliance. In Uttar Pradesh, however, the fact that Mulayam Singh Yadav is far less antagonistic towards Modi has long been evident. After walking out of the Janata Dal (United)-RJDCongress alliance in Bihar, which
also spelt doom for the proposed Janata parivar, Mulayam Singh predicted the BJP’s victory in the state. Moreover, Mayawati is unlikely to have any interest in reviving the alliance since she believes that she has a fair chance of returning to power on her own. However, the BJP will look with some satisfaction at the motley nature of the gathering in Patna. The mere presence of several chief ministers, a former prime minister and a prime minister wannabe do not make a gathbandhan.
Global terror toll surged nine-fold in 15 years CHAITANYA MALLAPUR, NEW DELHI
T
here has been a nine-fold increase in deaths due to terrorism globally, rising from 3,329 in 2000 to 32,685 in 2014, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2015 report by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a think-tank based in Sydney. The global economic cost of terrorism was $283 billion over the past 15 years, reaching a record high of $53 billion in 2014. The prime targets of terrorist attacks have been citizens and private property. Deaths of private citizens increased 172 percent in 2014 over the previous year. Nigeria-based Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) accounted for 51 percent of total deaths attributed to terrorist groups in 2014. Boko Haram has emerged as the deadliest terror out-
fit in 2014, killing over 6,664 people, an increase of 317 percent over the previous year. Boko Haram pledged its allegiance to ISIS, renaming itself as Islamic State’s West Africa Province in March 2015.
Another terrorist group, Fulani militants, has emerged in Nigeria that killed 1,229 people in 2014. The top five terrorist groups were responsible for 74 percent of all terrorist-related deaths. The ISIS claimed 6,073 deaths
in 2014, the most after Boko Haram. The Global Terrorism report highlights that ISIS inflicts more deaths on the battlefield (20,000) than through terrorism (6,073) attributed to the group. Baghdad (43) has the highest fatality rate per 100,000, followed by Maiuguri (39), Mosul (29), Peshawar (25) and Donetsk (10). The French capital of Paris saw a series of terrorist attacks on November 13, killing 129 people and leaving over 300 injured, the worst violence in France post World War-II. ISIS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has claimed responsibility for the Paris attack. The attacks in Paris were carried out by eight terrorists, of whom seven killed themselves in suicide bombings. As many as 705 bombing attacks by ISIS were reported in 2014. As
many as 117 instances were of suicide bombings, resulting in 1,101 deaths with an average of nine people killed per attack. Almost 78 percent killed in terror incidents are from five countries: Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. These five countries also account for 57 percent of all terror attacks in 2014, while Iraq and Nigeria alone account for 53 percent of all deaths. Deaths due to extremist incidents increased by 80 percent in 2014 over the previous year. These top ten countries accounted for 88 percent of all deaths in 2014. Iraq tops (10) the index, heading a list of 162 nations. The country is one of the worst affected by terrorism, reporting 9,929 deaths in 2014, an increase of 55 percent over 2013. Iraq also accounted for 30 percent of all deaths in 2014.

Indian laborers’ arrival in South Africa commemorated JOHANNESBURG: A South African organization working for indentured Indian-origin laborers commemorated the 155th anniversary of their arrival in the country, a media report said on Thursday. The 1860 Indentured Laborers’ Foundation on Sunday performed a play at a Civic Centre in Verulam town of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province and launched a brochure about work that foundation has done to educate people on the history and heritage of indentured laborers of Indian-origin. Anand Jayrajh, chairman of the foundation, said the history of indentured laborers should always be on the radar as far as community awareness is concerned, News 24 reported. “We are all aware of the fact that these indentured laborers worked in almost slave-like conditions and faced a lot of hardships,” Jayrajh said. “Despite all these difficulties, with diligence and hard work they were able to overcome almost unsurmountable odds to make the lives of their dependents much more comfortable than what they enjoyed,” he added. Indentured Labor was a system of bonded Labor that was instituted following the abolition of slavery. Indentured laborers were recruited to work in British colonies in the West Indies, Africa and South East Asia. The foundation works for upholding and preserving the history and heritage of the indentured laborers of Indian origin who were brought to the Colony of Natal — a British colony in southeastern Africa founded in 1843 during 1860-1911. The majority of Indian indentured workers brought to develop the sugar industry. In 1911, India prohibited the indentured labor to Natal because of the ill treatment of its citizens.

An old photograph of Veerender Jubbal holding an iPad was doctored to make it look like the photograph of a terrorist and was posted on social media shortly after the terror attacks in Paris, NBCnews.com reported. Jubbal’s doctored photograph showed him wearing a suicide bomb vest and the iPad in the pho-

a terrorist. “By photoshopping an image of a Sikh man to depict him as a ter-
rorist, and, worse, amplifying it through social and print media in the guise of legitimate news, an entire group of people is subjected to discrimination and hate violence,” said Prabhjot Singh, director of a New York-based medicine school. “I know this first hand, both as an advocate for quantifying the impact of hate crimes on Sikhs, Muslims and other targeted groups, but also as a person who had his jaw fractured in a hate crime,” he added. Jubbal had earlier in the week said he was deeply disturbed by the incident.

One of its two pilots was killed and the other was captured, media reports said. He explained that Turkish F-16 jets “intercepted an unidentified warplane according to globally acknowledged rules of engagement.” The Rusian defense ministry refuted the claim that the fighter violate the Turkish airspace.
The ministry stressed that “throughout its flight, the aircraft remained exclusively above Syrian territory,” BBC reported. “Objective monitoring data shows it,” the ministry added. Turkey is a member of the NATO military alliance, which views an attack on one member as an attack

‘Spectre’ — Not as spectacular as past Bond films Film: Spectre; Director: Sam Mendes; Cast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci, Ralph Fiennes and Jesper Christensen; Rating: ***
S
pectre starts off on an inspiring and intriguing note with a visually exciting oeuvre. In Mexico City, on The Day of The Dead, while the carnival is in full swing, Agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) trails some criminals in a continuous tracking shot. He shoots them, blowing up the building they are holed up in and escapes the crumbling structure only to land up fighting the criminal inside the helicopter over the town square.
This entire opening sequence is extremely thrilling and electrifying, but after that nothing measures up to it. What follows is Bond hunting the organization responsible for the deaths of those closest to him,
namely the prior M (Judi Dench). His path leads him to the nefarious terrorist organization, SPECTRE and its feared leader Franz Oberhauser who has his own personal agenda for causing Bond misery. For a long time the narration
cruises in holiday Bond mode, globetrotting between set pieces; from Mexico to London to Rome to Austria to Tangier in Morocco. Daniel Craig, in his fourth James Bond avatar, is suave and stylized. But unfortunately, his quip-heavy, flippant killing machine and womanizer reputation seems forced and it shows in the awkward passionate scenes or in the prolonged action sequences. Lea Seydoux as Madeleine Swan, James Bond’s love interest, is pale in comparison to all the previous Bond girls. Their relationship is never as interesting or as properly developed as a Bond film should. Due to this, they lack onscreen chemistry. Overall, Spectre is a dazzling film, but it lacks the lustre and adrenaline rush of a 007 film from the bygone Cold War Era. The chutzpah and the aura are missing. —Troy Ribeiro

The team from University of Cambridge also reported that sex addicts are more susceptible to environment ‘cues’ linked to sexual images than to those linked to neutral images. “We can all relate in some way to searching for novel stimuli online it could be flitting from one news website to another, or jumping from Facebook to Amazon to YouTube and on,” explained Valerie Voon from psychiatry department. “For people who show compulsive sexual behavior, though, this becomes a pattern of behavior

COMMUNITY NEWS/ny-nj Couple pleads guilty to healthcare fraud FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2015

BY A STAFF WRITER OCKAWARY, NJ -- A New Jersey-based Indian-American couple owning a mobile diagnostic testing company received more than $4.3 million from Medicare and private insurance companies over the past several years by providing fake patients’ medical diagnostic testing reports, and used the money for personal expenses. The couple, Nita and Kirtish Patel from Rockaway, Morris County, pleaded guilty before US District Judge William H. Walls in Newark federal court on November 17. New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said that the couple owning and operating Biosound Medical Services Inc. and Heart Solutions of Parsippany provided diagnostic testing reports that were never interpreted by a licensed physician. The fraudulent practice by the couple, both of them 53, had been going on since 2006. They were each charged with one count of healthcare fraud. According to the documents filed in the case and statements made in court, from 2006 through June 2014, Nita and Kirtish ran their laboratory providing mobile diagnostic testing, including ultrasounds, echocardiograms and nerve conduction studies that were used to

Drug-resistant TB patient treated successfully
Dr Sanjay Jain BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- A team of specialists at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, including an Indian American, has successfully treated a child with a highly virulent form of tuberculosis known as XDR TB, or extensively drug-resistant TB. The case provides the first detailed account of a young child in the US diagnosed and treated for XDR TB, according to the researchers. “We are thrilled that our patient is doing so well,” said TB expert Sanjay Jain. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for TB, is estimated to cause almost ten million new cases of TB disease worldwide each year, with strains impervious to drug therapies rapidly spreading. The child was brought to The Johns Hopkins Hospital for evaluation of unrelenting fever and malaise upon her return from India, where she and a sibling spent three months. Biosound technicians would travel to the office of a primary care physician in the New York and New Jersey area to conduct diagnostic testing. Biosound was responsible for sending the tests to a “reading physician”— an appropriate specialist who would interpret the results. After the reading physician prepared a report, Biosound was responsible for providing it to the referring physicians. Biosound was paid millions of dollars by Medicare and other payers for the
diagnostic testing, the reading physician’s interpretation of the results and the reports. Kirtish Patel admitted to fraudulently interpreting and writing diagnostic reports produced by Biosound despite having no medical license and knowing that the reports would be used by the referring physicians to make important patient treatment decisions. Nita admitted assisting her husband in forging physician signatures on the “fraudulently produced reports” to make them appear legitimate. The duo also admitted falsely representing to Medicare that the neurological testing performed by Biosound was being supervised by a licensed neurologist. According to the information, more than half of the diagnostic reports generated by Biosound between October 2008 and June 2014 were never actually reviewed or interpreted by a physician. The couple was paid more than $4,386,133.75 by Medicare and private insurance companies for the fraudulent reports, which they used for personal expenses, including multiple residences and luxury vehicles. The health care fraud charge to which Nita and Kirtish pleaded guilty carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.

Postal worker ‘harasses’ two Muslim women BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY -- Two Muslim sisters have made some disturbing allegations against a US Postal worker in Brooklyn. The man in the post office uniform came frighteningly close to the two Muslim women, one of whom was with her baby. He appeared to be yelling at them, but it got even worse. “The man with a postal uniform approached them, harassed them and even spat on them,” said Sadyuia Khalique, of CAIR. The women are so frightened; they step into a deli for safety. But the man in the postal service uniform followed them in. “Telling them ‘I’m going to bomb your temple,’ and when he followed them inside the Yemeni grocery store after the customers there pushed him out, he told them, ‘I’m waiting outside, come so I can attack you,’” Khalique said. “He makes a lot of noise all the time,” said Jamaal Abdulla, a resident. Major security lapse at NY’s JFK airport BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- In a major fiasco, officials at the JFK Airport in New York City let 150 passengers arriving from an international flight, from Cancun, Mexico, leave the airport without going through customs. American Airlines Flight 1671 arrived at JFK from Cancun, Mexico, at 8:50 pm on November 20. When the plane landed, passengers walked out of the airport without having their passports or bags checked by Customs and Border Protection. A source familiar with the matter said passengers disembarking the plane “just followed” a gate agent. The security snafu came just two days after ISIS released a video threatening New York City with a terrorist attack

.“Some passengers on Flight 1671 did not complete immigration and customs process upon arrival when they were inadvertently directed to the domestic terminal,” American Airlines said in a statement. American Airlines contacted the passengers and directed them to return to JFK for customs processing. According to an official, 144 passengers had returned to the airport and gone through customs. The six that remain are all US citizens. American Airlines is working with Customs and Border Protection to ensure they “complete the process and to prevent this from happening in the future,” the company also said in the statement. “None of us went through immigration or customs,” said a passenger, adding, “There were
no signs for customs or anything. The only signs we saw were baggage claim and exit. “The passenger complained on November 21 that agents have “been harassing me with phone calls — they’re coming from high-up people at American Airlines, (Transportation Security Administration) and customs . . . . They’re very aggressive.” Another passenger also said that agents had been reaching out constantly.“They’re telling me that I am here illegally, that I’m trespassing!” the passenger said. “They said, ‘If you don’t come in, we’re sending FBI agents to your house.’ ” A spokesman for the US Customs and Border Protection, part of the Department of Homeland Security, said the agency was “aware of and looking into the incident and is working with our counterparts to resolve it.”

Trump, Hillary differ on illegal immigrants BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -Presidential candidate Donald Trump has during a debate reiterated his desire to institute a ‘deportation force’ that would facilitate the mass roundup of around 11 million men, women, and children who are living in the United States unlawfully. Pressed for specifics on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Trump stated, “You’re going to have a deportation force, and you’re going to do it humanely. … you have millions of people that are waiting in line to come into this country and they’re waiting to come in legally. And I always say the wall, we’re going to build the wall. It’s going to be a real deal. It’s going to be a real wall.” Trump has said that he will remove all undocumented immigrants from the country “so fast that your head will spin” — specifically, in under two years. According to a report, that pace would require “significantly more troubling, blunt methods--predicting a police state is

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has blasted Trump’s idea for a deportation force, throwing a verbal haymaker at the real estate mogul over social media.“The idea of tracking down and deporting 11 million people is absurd,

inhumane, and un-American. No, Trump.” Clinton tweeted. Included in the immigration proposal Trump released in August is a call to triple the number of immigrations and customs enforcement agents. He also proposed ending birthright citizenship, which is included in the 14th amendment of the Constitution and grants automatic citizenship to anyone born on.
‘Clock Kid’ sues school district for $15 m
BY A STAFF WRITER RVING, TX-- Clock Kid’ Ahamed Mohammed has sued the City of Irving, in Texas, and the Irving School District for a whopping $15 million, and also demanded an apology for his humiliation and arrest in September. Ahamed, the former MacArthur High School freshman, was accused of bringing an item that looked like a bomb to school. It turned out to be a clock. Attorneys representing Mohamed and his family have sent letters to both the City of Irving and the Irving School District, demanding $10 million and $5 million, respectively, for the way the incident was handled earlier this year. They claim 14-year-old Ahmed has suffered severe damages as a result of his interrogation and arrest at the school. They also point the finger at Irving’s Police Chief and Mayor for the way they portrayed Ahmed to the media once the story gained international interest. The attorneys claim that both the school

district and the police department violated Ahmed’s rights, which led to a chain of events that ultimately forced the family to move out of the country to Doha, Qatar. The family wants to return to Irving, Texas, when they feel safe again. Several hardships are spelled out in the nine-page letter to the school district, which states, “Ahmed’s reputation in the global community is permanently scarred.” Among the damages his attorneys claim

include: Ahmed’s face being super-imposed onto a famous image of Osama bin Laden, Ahmed being portrayed as a clock boy on a Halloween costume website, and Ahmed’s address being tweeted out, which forced his family to leave their home. In the days after his arrest, support poured in from across the world for Ahmed. President Barack Obama invited Ahmed to attend the White House, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and a NASA scientist also voiced their support. During the controversy, an Irving School District spokesperson said the district supported Ahmed’s English teacher’s action when she confiscated the homemade clock. “A teacher heard beeping in her classroom, and then this device was brought to her. So, what she saw was a case with exposed wires and a timer attached to it,” said Lesley Weaver, director of communications for the Irving ISD. “She did the right thing. She followed the correct procedures. She involved the school resource officer and school administrators.”
BY A STAFF WRITER IAMI, FL -- An Indian national has pleaded guilty to his role in a racket that involved smuggling and selling counterfeit cigarettes in the United States. Gaurav Joseph Jayaseelan, 25, was arrested on August 28 after the trail from a shipping container with 53,740 cartons of knockoff cigarettes arrived at the Broward County port in Florida last year. Authorities said he and his father operated the Indian tobacco plant and supplying business that manufactured the cigarettes and illegally copied the Newport brand’s packaging and trademarks. Jayaseelan, his father Joseph Rayappan Jayaseelan, and a third man, Pedro Ivan Flores, were indicted in September 2014 on conspiracy, counterfeit trafficking and false labeling charges. Jayaseelan is the only one of the three who has been arrested so far, according to court records. He now faces a maximum possible punishment of 13 years in federal prison and potential fines of $2.25 million when sentenced in January. The prosecution and defense said he played a relatively minor role and will likely receive a sentence of two to 2.5 years in prison. “A key part of FDA’s mission is to protect consumers from counterfeit products --including cigarettes--that the agency regulates,” said Robert J West, Acting Special Agent in Charge, of the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations’ Miami Field Office. “We will continue to focus our efforts and resources on removing harmful counterfeit products from the US marketplace,” he continued.

Chinmaya Mission LA’s fundraising program BY A STAFF WRITER ULLERTON, CA -- The annual fundraiser program of Chinmaya Mission, Los Angeles (CMLA), “Sevanjali,” held this year at the Plummer Auditorium here on November 1, featured Padmabhushan K. J. Yesudas ensemble performing a repertoire of multilingual musical pieces. Swami Ishwarananda, head acharya of CMLA who spoke at the “Shruti Laya” event, said that Shruti was a pleasant musical sound, but when the listener was transported and transformed completely by the music, then Laya (dissolution) happened and the mind dissolved into a meditative space at the pinnacle of the experience. Acharya Mahadev of CMLA also elaborated on the theme of the divinity of sound.. Yesudas began the program with the classic “Vallachi Vachi,” followed by a rendering of the ever popular “Vaatapi Ganapathim” from his Carnatic menu. He then moved on to improvisational territory, straddling different genres in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada and Telugu.

11-year-old Indian girl sells secure passwords
Mira Modi
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- An enterprising 11-year-old Indian-origin girl in the US has started her own business selling cryptographically secure passwords generated by dice rolls. Mira Modi, a sixth grader in New York City, has her own website and generates sixword Diceware passphrases for her customers at $2 each. Diceware is a well-known decades-old system for coming up with passwords. It involves rolling a dice as a way to generate random numbers that are matched to a long list of English words. Those words are then combined into a string that exhibits true randomness and is therefore difficult to crack. These passphrases have proven relatively easy for humans to memorise. “This whole concept of making your own passwords and being super secure and stuff, I don’t think my friends understand that, but I think it’s cool,” says Modi’. Modi’s mother, Julia Angwin, a veteran journalist and author of Dragnet Nation, employed her daughter to generate Diceware passphrases as a part of research for her book. That is when Modi had the idea to turn it into a small business. For every order, Modi rolls a physical dice and looks up the words in a printed copy of the Diceware word list. She writes down the corresponding password string onto a piece of paper and sends it by postal mail to the customer. “I think good passwords are important. Now we have such good computers, people can hack into anything so much more quickly,” Modi said.
N
Swami Ishwarananda, head acharya of CMLA, addressed the audience.
Yesudas was accompanied by Krishna Parthasarathy of the Bay Area on violin, Santosh Chandru on ghatam, Vidwan T.S. Nandakumar on mridangam, and Mayuri Vasan, a past Chinmaya Mission balavihar student, on tanpura. His wife Prabha received a token of honor and appreciation for her support for her famous husband. Yesudas’s parting message to Indian American youth was to be strong and disciplined in their sadhana and to seek a good guru who could observe and correct their flaws so that they could truly excel and evolve in their craft. Swami Siddhananda of Chinmaya Mission, Philadelphia, who was a special guest at the event, performed a short, inspired piece of his own composition based on Yesudas’s “Jab Deep Jale.” CMLA’s Foundation Committee chair Dr. Shashi Acharya disclosed the financial fundraising goals and successes of the organization while praising the volunteers at CMLA. The evening was emceed by Nimmi Raghunathan.
Indian driver killed in van-tanker crash BY A STAFF WRITER INDEN, NJ -The driver of a van carrying mattresses and box springs that fell onto the New Jersey Dalip Kumar Turnpike, leading to a crash that claimed the life of an Indian American man, has been issued a summons, state police said. Adam Abuhamoud, 26, of Linden, N.J., was cited for not properly securing the mattresses to his vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court November 19. Dalip Kumar, 40, of Newark, N.J., was carrying about 8,500 gallons of gasoline from a Linden refinery in his tanker truck. While traveling on the highway’s western spur in Kearny on October 7, Kumar lost control of the tanker attempting to avoid the fallen bedding and crashed. The tanker, which overturned over a guardrail onto the opposite side of the highway, burst into flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Barred from study group, boy goes on a stabbing spree BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- An 18-yearold California university freshman went on an elaborately planned rampage with a hunting knife because he was barred from a study group. Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said a two-page ‘manifesto’ detailing Faisal Mohammad’s motive and plans to terrorize and kill several classmates at the University of California, Merced was found on his body during his autopsy last week. The campus police shot and killed Mohammad after the teen stabbed two students, a university employee and a construction contractor shortly after 8 a.m. on November 4 on the rural campus in the farm-rich San Joaquin Valley, 120 miles south of Sacramento. The four victims are out of danger, doctors said. Mohammad’s plan for revenge discussed his anger with being kicked out of the study group, the sheriff said, but he didn’t know why the computer science and engineering major was excluded from the group. Warnke said Mohammad planned to use plastic ties to bind the hands of his classmates to their desks in his morning class. He was then going to call the police with a fake distress call and ambush responding officers with a hunting knife and steal their guns. He planned to use the guns to shoot a list of students he named in his ‘manifesto,’ including those in his study group. Warnke said Mohammad’s plan was written

in English and referenced the Muslim god Allah several times. But Warnke said the student was motivated by personal animosities and the attacks had nothing to do with religion or terrorism. The sheriff said Mohammad was born in the United States. He said investigators didn’t find any evidence of mental illness. Mohammad began his rampage by attacking a fellow student with a knife in a required general education course on November 4 morning. Byron Price, 31, a construction worker doing remodeling next door, ran into the classroom
and is credited with preventing Mohammad from killing his initial stabbing victim. Price said he thought he was breaking up a fistfight when Mohammad charged at him with the knife, stabbing him in the side. Mohammad fled the room and stabbed two others— one in a stairway, the other on bench outside— before the police shot him on a nearby pedestrian bridge. The police found zip-tie handcuffs, duct tape and a hammer in a backpack near his body. It also contained two plastic baggies of petroleum jelly, which Warnke called a ‘poor man’s explosive’ if ignited. Officials said background checks with the help of the FBI and Homeland Security showed the 18-year-old had no connections to organized hate or terror groups and no past behavior to suggest he would lash out violently. Investigators also found a list of items Mohammad planned to pack in his backpack before the attacks. “He was quiet, but he was really friendly,” Ish Patel said. “He was intelligent, too — he performed well academically.” Patel said Mohammad enjoyed basketball, going to the mosque to pray and playing video games with his friends. He lost contact with Mohammad after they graduated from high school in June. The four injured have been discharged from hospital.

Bartlett BAPS mandir celebrates Diwali BY MINA PATEL ARTLETT, IL -- The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett celebrated Diwali and the Hindu New Year on November 11 and
B
12.
Celebrations began with children learning about cultural traditions at the Kids’ Diwali Celebration. The program included skits and fun-filled games to engage a younger audience. Arts and crafts stations were set up to illustrate traditions and teachings of Diwali. Reflecting on the scenes of the day, Sapna Jadav, a mother from Hanover Park, said, “It’s extremely prideful to see my two young sons learn more about their culture and traditions and how they celebrate them as young Indian-Americans.” The five-day celebration continued the day after Diwali with the beginning of the Hindu New Year. As a time of renewal, reflection and resolution, it is also an occasion for giving thanks, and is traditionally celebrated with the Annakut – literally meaning, ‘a mountain of food’. This is a grand offering of over a thousand different vegetarian food items, prepared lovingly by devotees, to thank God for His providence over the past year and to seek His blessings for the year ahead.
Office vandalized
BY A STAFF WRITER EST ENGLEWOOD, IL -- Shattered glass was the first thing a turkey delivery crew found at the 15th Ward office on November 21morning. Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) is helping distribute three tons of free turkeys to residents in the ward at 2 pm at 1650 W. 63rd St. He said he was notified by the company that the front door, which is made of glass, was completely shattered. Someone threw a piece of concrete through the main door of the building. There was also damage to the walls and desks inside the office. He estimated there was at least $1,000 in damages, but nothing was stolen. “I was shocked,” Lopez said. “Thankfully, it was just vandalism. I’m very proud of the community. Many residents came to check on us.”
W
Each year, the BAPS mandir in Bartlett also holds a themed exhibition to showcase important values that inspire IndianAmericans. This year’s exhibit, ‘Mandir… Transcending Above,’ drew inspiration from a book written by the late former President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam, about his encounters with His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, spiritual leader of BAPS. In his book, Dr. Kalam, explains how through his interactions with Pramukh Swami Maharaj he was able to transcend above all the obstacles in his life and
experience spiritual peace. The mandir represents a place of paramount peace where everyone, regardless of ethnicity or creed, can experience tranquility and spirituality. The idea of spreading peace to everyone and getting involved with community and charity work to become a better person inspired many to change their lives as they started the new Hindu year. Dressed up in traditional, colorful clothes, families and friends wished each
other sentiments of prosperity. Adults, community members, and young children eagerly visited the mandir to view the colorful décor, various food dishes, creative fruit carvings, and imaginative artwork. The community from all over the Chicago area gathered to offer prayer, express their wishes for the year ahead, and partake in the Annakut offerings. The dedication and tireless efforts of the volunteers was evident in every aspect of the celebration. The Mayor of the Village of Bartlett, Kevin Wallace, expressed his gratitude to BAPS. Similar celebrations took place at BAPS centers across the globe. On November 4, BAPS also co-hosted the Diwali in DC at the Jefferson Hall in the Library of Congress. Over 1,200 prominent Indian Americans and their Congressional representatives from across the United States attended the event hosted by the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. The Diwali celebration continued till November 15 with a special cultural program, followed by a grand fireworks show with music, videos, and traditional dances. Community members left the mandir with the hope that the coming year would bring joy and peace to their family.
Sonia Shah Organization lauded for girl education
Iram Shah with Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, honorable Consul General of Pakistan & invited guest.
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A fundraising dinner for Sonia Shah Organization, an Evening of Hope, Celebration, and Dedication, was organized at Pearl Banquets, 1480 W. Lake St. Roselle, Chicago, IL on November 20. The event was attended by a large number of eminent people belonging to different elite sections of society. Sonia Shah, an exceptionally bright 17 year old young girl, born and raised in the US and Europe, went to build a stateof-the-art girls’ school in order to offer free education to poor girls in the village of Kangra Pakhtoonkwa Pakistan, where only 3 out of 10 girls ever go to school. The amazing lineup of eminent dignitaries, who graced the evening, made a fervent appeal to people to sponsor girls’ education in Sonia Shah Memorial School. Yohannes Abraham, special assistant to the President and Chief of Staff for
C
the Office of Public Engagement and the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, in his keynote address, said that Sonia Shah was the youngest intern in the President’s Campaign of 2012. Abraham read out the message of Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the US, who conveyed her greetings to those gathered to celebrate the Sonia Shah Organization and encouraged young people to take charge of their future through education. Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, honorable Consul General of Pakistan said: “We must try to gain strategic advantage by focusing on educating and empowering women in order to build stable societies less vulnerable to extremist manipulation, considering the fact that their illiteracy, ignorance, and oppression create the Petri dish in which extremism can flourish”. Iram Shah, chairwoman of the Sonia Shah Organization, gave insight as to how she turned a personal tragedy to a meaningful
cause and legacy of her daughter. She quoted statistics to drive home the point that Pakistan is among the few developing countries at the bottom of the rankings when it comes to girl’s education. Iram Shah announced Sonia Shah Scholarship program for talented girls aspiring to go to college or higher education. She said that she came to US over 20 years ago for higher education which changed her life and lives of others around her. The scholarship will be a gift that will keep giving. The Vagabonds of the Runaway Circus, a local circus entertainment company, presented a customized and unique performance piece, exclusively for the Sonia Shah Organization, in order to pay tribute to this evening’s key components: Hope, Celebration, and Dedication. The program also included the live and silent auction of a number of rare items in order to raise funds.

Why hangovers get worse as we grow older As brain degenerates with age, the toxic products tend to hit the brain harder, say doctors who advise to drink in moderation; severity of hangover depends on amount of alcohol intake NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI
T
he next time a hangover hits you hard the morning after a late-night party, look in the mirror to see if your hair is turning white or your hairline is receding. Yes, age is a major factor in the way drinking affects you. Worsening impact of hangovers are a reminder that drinking in moderation would be a better idea, say health experts. “The capacity of our liver to cope with alcohol reduces with age. The alcohol metabolizing enzyme reduces and the body fat increases reducing muscle mass, thus increasing the effect of alcohol,” Dr Rahul Tambe, general physician from Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital in Mumbai told IANS in an email. “Elderly people are often on multiple medication which interferes with alcohol metabolism. Losing weight causes reduced distribution of alcohol in body causing greater intoxication and hangover,” he
added. According to Dr Yogesh Batra, senior consultant (gastroenterology) at BLK Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi, with age, there is an accumulation of substances like acetaldehyde in the liver which are the by-products of alcohol metabolism and are one of the “incriminating agents” responsible for hangovers. “There is brain degeneration with age and the toxic products tend to hit the brain harder. There is a tendency towards dehydration as the aging population tends to drink less water which leads to hangovers,” Dr Batra said. Hangover or veisalgia is usually experienced after an alcoholic over-indulgence. The symptoms experienced range from a simple headache to severe nausea, vomiting, giddiness, fatigue and sweating. In some people, it can even lead to anxiety or panic attacks. Severity of hangover depends on amount of alcohol intake, frequency of heavy drinking and food intake.
‘The capacity of our liver to cope with alcohol reduces with age’
Good sleep enhances memory IANS, NEW YORK
D
o you want to better remember new names and faces? Go, hit the sack. According to researchers, people are better at remembering faces and names if they get eight-hour sound sleep after seeing those faces and names for the first time. Many different kinds of memories are improved with sleep. While a couple of studies have looked at how naps might affect our ability to learn new faces and names, no previous studies have looked at the impact of a full night of sleep in between learning and being tested. “We found that when participants were given the opportunity to have a full night’s sleep, their ability to correctly identify the name associated with a face - and their confidence in their answers - significantly improved,” explained Jeanne F Duffy from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Participants in the study were shown 20 photos of faces with corresponding names from a database
of over 600 color photos of adult faces and asked to memorize them. After a 12-hour period, they were then shown the photos again with either a correct or incorrect name. In addition to answering whether or not the correct name was shown, participants were asked to rate their confidence on a scale of one to nine. When given an opportunity to sleep for up to eight hours, participants correctly matched 12 percent more of the faces and names.
The findings suggest that sleep after new learning activities may help improve memory. “Sleep is important for learning new information. As people get older, they are more likely to develop sleep disruptions and sleep disorders, which may, in turn, cause memory issues,” Duffy noted. “By addressing issues with sleep, we may be able to affect people’s ability to learn things at all different ages,” the authors concluded.
Loneliness is deadly for elderly NEW YORK: For older adults, perceived social isolation is a major health risk that can increase the chances of premature death by 14 percent. The researchers found that loneliness leads to fight-or-flight stress signalling, which can ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. Essentially, lonely people had a less effective immune response and more inflammation than non-lonely people, researchers from the University of Chicago and UCLA. The team examined gene expression in leukocytes, cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against bacteria and viruses. As expected, the leukocytes of lonely humans and macaques showed an increased expression of genes involved in inflammation and a decreased expression of genes involved in antiviral responses. “Leukocyte gene expression and loneliness appear to have a reciprocal relationship, suggesting that each can help propagate the other over time,” the researchers noted. These
results were specific to loneliness and could not be explained by depression, stress or social support. “The ‘danger signals’ activated in the brain by loneliness ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. The resulting shift in monocyte output may both propagate loneliness and contribute to its associated health risks,” the researchers said.
