Iowa: Narrow win for Hillary Donald Trump fails to translate his media presence into votes while Ted Cruz who spent months touring the state and reaching out to evangelical voters, emerges as a formidable contender ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

H

illary Clinton declared victory over Bernie Sanders in a razor thin contest between Democratic candidates, while arch conservative Ted Cruz scored an upset victory over Republican frontrunner Donald Trump as Americans cast their first votes in the US presidential race. “Hillary Clinton has won the Iowa Caucus,” the Clinton campaign said on February 2 after the first nominating contests in Iowa gave her 22 delegates to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ 21 delegates — with one delegate left undecided. The state’s Democratic Party waited for the full results before announcing a victor. But its figures showed that Clinton appeared to have an upper hand in the remaining count. “As I stand here tonight, breathing a big sigh of relief,” Clinton told supporters at a Des Moines

Obama creates ‘cancer moonshot’ task force

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama signed a presidential memorandum on January 28 establishing a first-of-its-kind federal task force in the country to carry out what was called a “cancer moonshot” to end the dreadful disease. The panel, led by Vice President Joe Biden, will coordinate federal investments, private sector efforts and patient engagement initiatives to support cancer research and enable progress in treatment and care of the disease. “Today, cancer research is on the cusp of major breakthroughs,” according to the memorandum released by the White House.

“It is of critical national importance that we accelerate progress towards prevention, treatment, and a cure — to double the rate of progress in the fight against cancer -- and put ourselves on a path to achieve in just 5 years research and treatment gains that otherwise might take a decade or more.” The task force, which will hold its first meeting on Monday, will include top officials from 13 government agencies, such as the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health. It will present to Obama a report before December 31, just before Obama leaves office, on its findings and recommendations on cancer.

rally. “I will keep doing what I’ve done my entire life. I will keep standing up for you. I will keep fighting for you.” It was an apparent reference to her 2008 loss where a disastrous third-place showing in Iowa that then Senator Barack Obama won, unraveled her first presidential run. For Sanders, the close outcome was a cause of celebration too, showing as it did his remarkable rise against the formidable Clinton machine. “Nine moths ago when we came to this beautiful state, we had no political organization, we had no money, we had no name recognition and we were taking on the most powerful political organization in the United States of America,” he said. On the Republican side with Trump failing to translate his formidable media presence into votes, Cruz who spent months touring the state and reaching out to evangelical voters, emerged as a formidable contender in the delegate-rich, South-

ern states holding primaries in the coming weeks. As he claimed victory, Cruz fired immediate shots at both Trump and the party elites who disdain him. “Iowa has sent notice that the Republican nominee and the next president of the United States will not be chosen by the media, will not be chosen by the Washington establishment,” he said. Trump delivered a short but gracious speech, saying he loved Iowa and vowed to go on next week to win the New Hampshire primary. “We will go on to get the Republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat Hillary or Bernie,” Trump told supporters. “We finished second, and I have to say I am just honored.” After his total washout, former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley dropped out of the Democratic race. So did Arkansas’ former Republican governor Mike Huckabee.

Fed keeps key interest rate unchanged WASHINGTON: The Federal Reserve said late on January 27 that it will maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 0.25 percent to 0.5 percent, pledging to keep the accommodative monetary policy to support economic growth. The labor market conditions improved further even as economic growth slowed late last year and household spending and business fixed investment have been increasing at moderate rates in recent months, the Fed said after its two-day monetary policy meeting. “The committee is closely monitoring global economic and financial developments and is assessing their implications for the labor market and inflation,” the Fed’s policy-setting committee said. The Fed decided to raise benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in December last year, the first interest rate increase since 2006 and marking the end of an era of extraordinary easing monetary policy. The Fed said it will assess a wide range of information including measures of labor market conditions, indicators of inflation pressures and inflation expectations to decide the pace of the future rates hike.

‘Selfie monkey’ can sue IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he black macaque in the world-famous “monkey selfie” which it took after pressing a button on a camera owned by a wildlife photographer four years ago in Indonesia has another chance to fight for the copyright ownership, media reported. “The organization [People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals] has means to amend — meaning that if it wants, PETA can try yet again to get damages from nature photographer David Slater and the self-publishing company Blurb, Inc,” a report on motherboard .vice.com said. The situation has been uneasy for Slater as he is claiming the photo to be his but entities like Wikimedia contested this claim, “concluding that the selfie is in public domain because it was

taken by a non-human”. Animal rights organization PETA has taken Slater to court, claiming that the monkey selfies are neither in public domain nor the property of the photographer - in fact, they belong to the black macaque named Naruto. “The attorney for Naruto, David A. Schwarz, suggested that a ruling in favor of the macaque would be a progressive step forward similar to women’s emancipation or the liberation of the slaves,” the report said. In September last year, PETA filed a lawsuit in the federal court in San Francisco against Slater and his company, Wildlife Personalities Ltd., which both claim copyright ownership of the photos that Naruto indisputably took. The macaque is known to field researchers in Sulawesi who have observed and studied him for years as they work in the region.

T

he investigation into the Pathankot airbase terror attack has made no headway even after a month as the evidence provided by India is not enough, Pakistan’s probe team has said and has asked Islamabad to seek more evidence from India. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif formed a six-member investigation team, headed by the additional inspector general of Punjab’s counter terrorism department, in the second week of January to look into India’s allegations that Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) was behind the Pathankot terror attack. “The team has almost completed its investigation into five telephone numbers, allegedly used for making calls from Pakistan to India, provided by the Indian government. No further leads were found from these numbers because they were un-registered and had

Islamic State growing threat in Libya: Kerry ROME: The US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State has pushed back the jihadist group in Syria and Iraq but it is a growing threat in Libya, where it could seize its oil wealth, US Secretary of State John Kerry said. “In Libya, we are on the brink of getting a government of national unity, and that will prevent Daesh (IS) from turning Libya into a stranglehold on that country’s future,” Kerry told an anti-IS summit in Rome. “That country has resources. The last thing in the world you’d want is a false caliphate with access to billions of dollars in revenue,” he said. At the opening of the Rome conference attended by 23 nations from

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will lead his country at a nuclear summit in March in which the outgoing Obama administration is likely to reach some understanding with recognized and unrecognized nuclear states to control proliferation, a local media report said this week. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be among the leaders expected to attend the meeting, Dawn reported. US President Barack Obama will host the fourth and the final Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) on April 1 in Washington. Leaders from 50 countries and international organizations will participate.

The Foreign Secretary-level talks between the two countries have been put on hold as India wants Pakistan to act against the perpetrators of the attack before going ahead with any bilateral dialogue. India has maintained that it has provided several proofs to Pakistan, including call records, which reveal the hand of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar in the Pathankot attack. Sharif recently admitted that the attack has derailed the Indian-Pakistan dialogue. “Talks with India were progressing but the Pathankot attack has affected the dialogue process,” he said and added that the findings of the probe will be made public. “Whatever facts come out, we will bring them forth before everyone.” Six terrorists stormed the Indian Air Force base in Indian Punjab’s Pathankot town, killing seven security personnel. Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, California, said it plans to lay off about 1,500 employees and exit five offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Milan. By the end of 2016, the company expects to have approximately 9,000 employees and fewer than 1,000 contractors. It represents a workforce 42 percent smaller than it was in 2012, and save $400 million annually, the company said. It will also simplify its product portfolio.

Had there been any further delay, the man would have slipped away,” a source said. “He had shaved his beard and had packed up. His taxi was intercepted and he was picked up after positive identification,” said the anonymous source. Waheed, who is in his early 30s, said the planning of the attack that left at least 20 people killed and many others injured had been going for six months in Achin district of Afghanistan, the base of the Tareek-e-Taliban Pakistan group’s militant commander Khalifa Omar Mansoor alias Omar Naray. Zika virus threat to India real India has to be on the alert because international travel from central and South America and Africa can potentially carry the virus into our country

crowding and hygiene issues. So till such time that diagnostic facilities are available, best option is mosquito control measures to prevent mosquito breeding,” she added. A patient suffering from fever with rash should be protected from further mosquito bites during the first few days of illness so that he does not pass the virus into more mosquitoes and cause local transmission of disease. “Zika virus is a vector-borne disease. Currently, it may not be here in

India, but if a person lands in India with the active infection and gets bitten by Aedes mosquito and that mosquito bites other peoples this can be spread in India as well,” Dr J.S. Bhasin, senior consultant and HOD (peadiatric and neonatology department) at BLK Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi. According to Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), “the level of alarm is extremely high, as is the level of uncertainty. Questions abound. We need to get some answers quickly.” “Arrival of the virus in some countries of the Americas, notably Brazil, has been associated with a steep increase in the birth of babies with abnormally small heads and in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a poorly understood condition in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis,” a WHO statement read. The WHO was criticised last year for reacting slowly to Ebola epidemic that killed over 10,000 people. “A causal relationship between Zika virus infection and birth defects and neurological syndromes has not been established, but is strongly suspected,” the WHO statement added. The virus was first isolated in 1947 from a rhesus macaque monkey from Zika forest in Uganda.

considerable faith in his pro-development programme even if it is yet to reach the take-off point. But what the BJP has to be wary of is, first, the significance of the party’s lower approval rating and, second, the fact of its inconsequence in states like West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puduchery which will go to the polls this year. Only in Assam,

which will also go to the polls, can it expect to fare reasonably well, but it is still a touch-and-go affair. To give the party a nationwide edge, Modi will have to crack the whip much harder where the saffron fundamentalists are concerned, for even an eight percent growth rate will not help him to usher in the missing achhey din if extremists continue to flourish.

NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

T

he mosquito-borne Zika virus - a pathogen which was virtually unheard of till some days ago - is spreading so fast that it can infect nearly four million people in the Americas in next 12 months if not tackled well within time and the threat has now reached India. In May 2015, Brazil reported its first case of Zika virus disease. Since then, the disease has spread within Brazil and to 22 other countries and territories in the Americas. Pregnant women are at greater risk. According to health authorities, the virus may trigger a brain abnormality called microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head) in newborn babies though the link is yet to be established. Zika virus is transmitted by the bite of Aedes species mosquito which breeds in water-holding containers. Like dengue, it is a day-biting mosquito. “India has to be on the alert because international travel from central and South America, Africa and the Caribbean Islands can potentially carry the virus into our country,” said Dr Monica Mahajan, senior consultant (internal medicine) at Max Super Specialty Hospital in the capital. The union health ministry said on Friday that it is making sure that

According to health authorities, the virus may trigger a brain abnormality called microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head) in new-born babies though the link is yet to be established. (Photo: IANS)

India is well prepared against cases of Zika virus that has already caused much damage in the Americas. In its latest advisory, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also cautioned pregnant women to avoid travelling to countries at risk of Zika virus transmission. However, most cases are mild and only one in five humans bitten by the mosquito will develop the disease. Symptoms are similar to chikungunya and dengue but fortunately, complications are rare.

“The recent concern is two-fold: There have been cases reported in more nations compared to outbreaks prior to 2015. Secondly, there is concern about possible birth defects in case a pregnant lady gets infected by Zika virus,” Dr Mahajan told IANS. According to her, past experience with dengue epidemic shows that mosquito breeding in India is rampant and difficult to control. “So any mosquito-borne illness tends to spread easily owing to over-

Modi’s ‘achhey din’ a mirage? AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

o most supporters of Narendra Modi, including those outside the saffron fold who welcomed his economic agenda, the prime minister’s tenure so far has been disappointing. That he has sensed the uneasy public mood is evident from his directive for action against nonperforming bureaucrats. But, apart from disciplining the officials, what is expected of him is the kind of sternness which he showed as the Gujarat chief minister. As a result, he was able to marginalize his predecessors like Keshubhai Patel and silence rabble-rousers like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Pravin Togadiya. In Delhi, he has taken similar effective action against incorrigible trouble-makers like Yogi Adityanath and seems to have persuaded Rashtriya Swayamsevak

Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat to refrain from saying that all Indians are Hindus. But his task remains incomplete as the hooliganism of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists recently showed in Allahabad University where they held a senior journalist hostage in the vice chancellor’s office to prevent him from speaking at a seminar. Their charge against the journalist was that he was “anti-national”, a label which they also used to defame the Dalit student, Rohith Vemula, who recently committed suicide in the Hyderabad Central University. It is patent enough that Modi’s call for upholding constitutional governance, under which antinationals are to be identified only by the state and not vigilante groups, is not being heeded by some of his party members and associates.

There is little doubt that their words and deeds are reflexive in nature. Having being tutored in the RSS shakhas (schools) to regard themselves as the epitomes of patriotism, the saffron-tinted activists have routinely dubbed those not adhering to their creed as enemies of the nation. Their pursuit of the same line, despite Modi’s restraining efforts, is the main reason why sections of the intelligentsia have expressed misgivings about the prevailing intolerance in their view. Had the prime minister followed up his general advice with firm admonitions on specific occasions, the sense of despondency might have been dissipated. It is not surprising, therefore, that an opinion poll has shown Modi’s ratings to be higher than the BJP’s. There is little doubt that at the national level, the people across the board continue to repose

It’s a clean romantic entertainer with some family values,” she said. ‘Irudhi Suttru’: Packs a punch with solid performances

hen was the last time a leading star played a grumpy, foul-mouthed and ill-mannered womaniser in Indian cinema? In “Irudhi Suttru”, director Sudha portrays Madhavan (Prabhu), who plays a boxing coach in the Indian squad, in ways most heroes won’t be willing to see themselves on the screen. In his introduction scene, he wakes up with a woman in bed who cribs about travelling 20 km to spend time with him, only to be humiliated by his actions. He’s used to sleeping with random women ever since his wife eloped with another boxer. Cut to next scene, charged with sexual harassment, he’s transferred from Hisar

to Chennai. In Chennai, Prabhu finds a potential boxing champion in Madhi, a fish dweller, who is grumpier than him. He wants to train her and is willing to pay her

Rs.500 per class. She gives in to the lucrative deal, not because she aspires to be a boxer, but so that she could buy her mother a new sari. Sudha beautifully explores the

mentor-mentee relationship again and merely uses the sports angle as a metaphor. The story is about a washed-out coach’s shot at redemption when he finds a protege with all the qualities of a champion, but the spotlight also stays on the unison of two eccentrically diverse personalities and their common goal.

‘Saala Khadoos’: Clearly a champ IANS, NEW DELHI

S

aala Khadoos” is an inspirational sports drama, based on some true incidents. The film revolves around the theme of exalting women to join and shine as sports stars. Adi Tomar (R. Madhavan), an embittered boxing coach, whose boxing career is ruined owing to a devious plan executed by his then coach, Dev Khatri (Zakir Hussain), has lost all hope, till he spots a poor local girl Madhi (Ritika Singh) in Chennai who sells fish but is keen on boxing. He then trains her to represent India. Through the lives of Madhi and her sister Laxmi aka Lux (Mumtaz Sorcar), the film highlights issues

like politics in sports, girls being discouraged to take up sports by their families and the fact that girls too are equally talented and can become champions. R. Madhavan essays the title role playing Adi Tomar, the disgruntled

boxing coach full of angst against the system, to perfection. Ritika Singh as Madhi, is the star of the film, not merely because she is the protagonist, but because she puts her heart and soul into her character.

my!! This will be an insaaaan night!” Priyanka tweeted on Mon day night. The former Miss World, who currently riding on the success o Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani, is also th first Bollywood personality to b feted with People’s Choice Awar in January, this year for her inter national acting debut as FBI agen Alex Parish in the American TV thriller series Quantico. Mike Tyson eager to watch ‘Saala Khadoos’

MUMBAI: Legendary boxer Mike Tyson has expressed a desire to watch Bollywood film Saala Khadoos, which delves into the story of a boxing coach. “I’d like to see this boxing film,” Tyson, who has also acted in a couple of international films, posted on his Facebook page, along with a link of a review by an Indian publication about the inspirational sports drama Saala Khadoos. Tyson’s interest in the movie seems to be natural given that he holds the record of being the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles at 20 years of age. Saala Khadoos has also been made in Tamil titled Irudhi Suttru.

‘Mastizaade’: Crude, crass, unimpressive, low on IQ

A

sex comedy, high on testosterone and low on IQ, Mastizaade is a blow to your sensibilities. It even slips notches below Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. Designed specifically to cater to the adult front benchers with everything crass and obnoxious, the film is about two friends Aditya Chotiya (Vir Das) and Sunny Kele (Tusshar Kapoor) who are addicted to sex. Their modus operandi is to join the various addiction centers to ensure easy prey for their despicable yearnings. They boast among their friends for possessing ‘Chick-rays’, an X-ray vision that enables them to scrutinize easy girls.

Film: “Mastizaade”; Director: Milap Zaveri; Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Vir Das, Sunny Leone, Riteish Deshmukh, Suresh Menon and Shaad Randhawa; Rating: * The duo chance upon twin sisters Laila and Lily Lele, effectively played by Sunny Leone, only to realize that their ‘Chick-rays’ is ineffective on them and that according to them is the sign of true love. What follows is their pursuit to woo and convince the sisters. The script pivoting on a flat,

wafer-tin plot is injected with equa ly frivolous, insufferable sub-plo and blatant below-the-belt jokes. With lazily crafted exposition the film tilts heavily on done-to death scenes and dialogues with sex ual innuendoes which are loade with puns, rhymes, double enten dres and names like Lele, Kel Chotiya, Urashit and Sondas. Th characters are one-dimensional wit most of them obsessed with sex. On the performance fron Tusshar and Vir Das lack the chari ma of macho beefcakes. They mak this film a drudgery. Riteish Desh mukh in an undeveloped characte in a miniscule role is charming.

‘Social media helps people in clarifying their stands’

B

ollywood actress Kangana Ranaut says that she is inactive on social media because of “nasty trolls and frustration” from different people, but she feels that one of its advantages is that people can use the medium to clarify their stands and dispel rumors. “Certainly one of the good things about such mediums is that you can actually clarify your stand when you are sort of facing rumors and misunderstood. “The bad things is that you are susceptible to all kinds of nasty trolls and frustrated people who are just out to show their frustration regardless of whosoever it is and get subjected to hatred which is inhuman,” Kangana.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC- An Indian American graduate student at the University of South Alabama, Naga Annamdevula, was recently awarded an American Heart Association grant. Annamdevula, as well as fellow University of South Alabama graduate student Emily Turner, will put the $52,000 grant towards helping support doctoral research as part of an interdisciplinary biomedical engineering track. It is a collaborative effort between the university’s College of Medicine graduate program in basic medical science and the College of Engineering. “The ultimate goal of this merger was to develop a synergistic educational environment that promoted collaboration between the various disciplines,” College of Medicine dean Dr. Samuel J. Strada said in a statement. The biomedical engineering track was launched six years ago. “Naga and Emily are both very qualified and promising doctoral students working on highly interdisciplinary biomedical engineering projects,” said Dr. Silas Leavesley, who teaches in the program. The research — half engineering; half biological science — helps provide more insight towards biological approaches. Hospital sued for disease deaths

BY A STAFF WRITER LINT, MI -- Victims of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Flint, Michigan, have filed a suit against a public hospital and six state workers, saying the water crisis there led to sickness and death. The suit only specifies damages above $25,000, but lawyer Geoffrey Fieger said he was seeking $100 million for his four clients, including a man whose mother died of Legionnaires’ at McLaren Regional Medical Center. “A hospital won’t make money if it discloses a Legionnaires’ outbreak from contaminated water, and a Governor will stop hearing whispers that he’s being considered for higher office if he reveals a water and Legionnaires’ crisis,” Fieger said in a statement. State officials are still investigating whether two spikes in Legionnaires’ disease in 2014 and 2015 can be attributed to the city’s switch to the Flint River for its drinking water — a move that also exposed residents to lead-poisoning, E. coli bacteria and toxic chemical byproducts. More than a dozen of the 87 Legionnaires’ cases involved patients who were treated at McLaren before they fell ill with the disease, a type of pneumonia. Eleven people who had Legionnaires’ eventually died, including Debra Kidd, who initially went to the hospital for a headache, was discharged after several hours and fell gravely ill two days later. Kidd’s son, Troy, is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The court papers blame the disease outbreak on a failure to treat the river water with anti-corrosion agents in violation of federal regulations and point the finger at six Michigan Department of Environmental Quality employees, two of whom have been suspended.

community news / east coast IRS phone scammer faces deportation Carjacking on SLU campus 2

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER EONIA, NJ -- An Indian national busted by a Leonia detective in a $170,000 IRS phone scam that claimed 70 victims in 32 states has been sentenced to time served in exchange for a guilty plea and a promise to cooperate with prosecutors. Her lawyer said that Nikita Patel, 25, “plans to stay in the area and go back to school.” But the INS has placed a deportation detainer on her, so she must remain in the Bergen County Jail for now. Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Brian Lynch said he would work hard to see that Patel--who was in the US on an expired visa--is sent back to India. Her partner, Akash Patel, also pleaded guilty and was deported. The Patels acted as runners, collecting funds wired by unsuspecting victims. “In some cases, the victims lost their life savings,” Leonia police chief Thomas P. Rowe said last fall. One of those victims contacted the Leonia police from Lexington, KY in early September. A scammer threatened to have him arrested if he didn’t pay a $1,400 tax debt, then had him wire the money to

3 Indians found guilty in $7-m student visa fraud BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Three IndianAmericans have been sentenced by a US court to terms ranging from six months of home confinement to a year in jail for involvement in a student visa fraud scheme. The Manhattan court sentenced Suresh Hiranandaney, Lalit Chabria and Anita Chabria-all relatives--in the $ 7.4-million fraud. US District Judge Paul Oetken sentenced Hiranandaney and Chabria to one year in prison, while Anita was sentenced to six months of home confinement. The three were also found guilty of having roles in a student financial aid fraud scheme in which they defrauded the Department of Education of $1 million in grant funds. “Suresh Hiranandaney, Lalit Chabria, and Anita Chabria exploited our nation’s financial aid and foreign student visa programs, engaging in a long-running fraud scheme that generated millions of dollars,” US Attorney Preet Bharara said. “The defendants greedily took advantage of programmes meant to help people get a higher education, and in the process, committed federal crimes,” he said. In addition to the prison and home confinement sentences, the three were ordered to forfeit $7,440,000 to the US from the proceeds of their student visa fraud, and pay $1 million in restitution to Department of Education for losses from their student financial aid fraud. According to court documents, the three were associated with the Micropower Career Institute (MCI), or the Institute for Health Education (IHE), both of which offered vocational, language, and other classes to domestic students whose tuition was partially covered by Department of Education, and foreign students who were allowed to stay in the US on student visas. Hiranandaney was MCI’s president; his brother-in-law Lalit was MCI’s chief executive officer and IHE’s president; and Anita, the sister of Hiranandaney and wife of Lalit, was MCI’s vice president and the director of MCI’s Mineola Campus in Mineola, New York.

a MoneyGram account in the name of “Vincent Arora” at a CVS store on Broad Avenue, he said. Detective Michael Jennings got a surveillance video of the pickup, created screen shots and issued a statewide alert. C o n t a c t i n g Mo n e y Gr a m , h e discovered that a “Vincent Arora” conducted 30 or so transactions in a week in various statewide locations. MoneyGram later alerted Jennings that a scheduled transaction in Watchung. The police missed their target by 10 minutes, but the surveillance video showed that it was the same man as in Leonia.

MoneyGram again alerted Jennings to a scheduled transaction at an Elizabeth CVS in early September. The manager gave him a description of the thieves and a license plate number. The Elizabeth police followed the car and seized the Patels. The Leonia police picked up the pair and found $9,140 in cash in the car, along with MoneyGram receipts from throughout the state. They also found $10,822 in Nikita’s apartment. Authorities hope they can now find the ringleaders. The Patels said that they got victim information from call centers in India.

BY A STAFF WRITER T. LOUIS, MO – The police are hot on the trail of a suspect after a carjacking on Saint Louis University Campus. The graduate student was paying for parking near the intersection of Laclede and Spring on February 2. A young man grabbed her keys and tried to steal her car. He drove up on a curb as the two struggled over the keys. The police, who were looking for a black Ford Focus travelling after the suspect drove west on Laclede, later recovered the vehicle which was abandoned in Pine Lawn. The suspect is described as a white male, 6’ tall, wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans. The victim was not injured.

Hundreds mourn death of 4 Indians in crash BY A STAFF WRITER CRANTON, PA -- Mourners attending the funerals for four of the five people killed in what authorities call a wrong-way crash on a northeastern Pennsylvania interstate say their communities are devastated by the loss. About 500 people from the south Asian communities in the region attended the joint funeral services on January 30 at Chipak Funeral Home. Vinodchandra Patel, 68; Komal Vyas, 30; Bhaveshkumar Patel, 42; and Shilpa Patel, 29, were from India and were coworkers at a Scott Township factory. They were killed and another person was injured as they were returning home from work on January 23. The Pennsylvania State Police say their vehicle was struck head-on by a car that apparently was heading north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81. A

passenger in that car was also killed. Funeral services for 32-year-old Ashley Wheeler, of Scranton, was held last week. Shashikant Kalariya of Waverly, who knew Vyas and Bhaveshkumar Patel, said the Indian community was reeling from the accident.

“So sad,” Kalariya said. “And the way it happened. Those people were here (in America), five years, 10 years, to get a better life.” Hina Patel, of Scranton, also knew Vyas and called her “a good human being.” “It’s very heartbreaking you know. She definitely didn’t deserve this,” Hina Patel said. Two mourners displayed framed portraits of the married couple, whose survivors include an infant daughter and a young son. Kuldeep Dhaliwal, of Dupont, said he didn’t know the victims but came out of respect for them and to support their survivors. “Those little babies (will) never know mom and dad,” she said. Gennadiy Manannikov, 28, of Lake Ariel, has been charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangering and traffic-related violations; prosecutors say more charges are possible.
