Soros After a slap, Kejriwal fears Fellowships British Sikhs urged reception forto4boycott students threat to life LONDON: Sikh groups in Britain have urged the community to boycott the annual Downing Street Baisakhi reception by the British prime minister this month to protest against the findings of the government’s probe into Operation Bluestar in Amritsar city’s Golden Temple in 1984. The Network of Sikh Organisations (NSO), a Sikh body that links 130 UK gurdwaras and other UK Sikh organizations, has urged the Sikhs in Britain to shun the Baisakhi celebrations, marking Sikh New Year, at 10 Downing Street this year, The Huffington Post reported. The British government under Prime Minister David Cameron had launched an investigation in Febru-

ary this year, into alleged assistance by a British officer to Indian authorities during Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple in 1984. The report by British Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood in February found that the nature of the British assistance was purely advisory, limited and provided to the Indian government at an early stage. The NSO, headed by Lord Indarjit Singh of Wimbledon, described the British Government’s review of Operation Bluestar as “deeply hurtful to Sikhs”, and insensitive to others concerned with human rights. “UK Sikhs are deeply disappointed by the UK Government’s attitude to Sikh human rights,” said NSO in its statement.

P

resident Barack Obama resorted on April 8 to an executive order to oblige federal contractors to provide equal pay for women who currently earn less than their male counterparts. The fact that on average a woman is paid 77 cents for every $1 paid to a man is “wrong” in 2014, Obama said during a White House event. “And this is not just an issue of fairness. It’s also a family issue and an economic issue, because women make up about half of our workforce and they’re increasingly the breadwinners for a whole lot of families out there,” he said.

‘Election presents chance Indian travelers to US to grow 54 percent for India-US reset’ ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON: As India began the month-long exercise to elect a new government, the United States media suggested that India’s next prime minister would have an opportunity to start afresh with the U.S. after their recent tensions. “Washington has already opened a door to this, suggesting that (Bharatiya Janata Party leader) Narendra Modi, the current favorite for PM, will be allowed a US visa,” wrote CNN in a piece titled “Why India feels jilted by (President Barack) Obama.” “The last time Washington tried to hit

the reset button — with Russia —things went awry. But the stakes are too high to not try again.” It said. “If it gets this one right, Obama will be vindicated: This century’s defining alliance may yet be the one between the two biggest democracies in the world,” CNN said. The influential New York Times suggesting that Modi “could possibly be India’s next prime minister” ran an explainer video report “on his controversial past and economic promises.” It also ran a report on the release of the national manifesto BJP “which is the main opposition party and is widely seen as the front-runner in the national elections,” focusing “on what it called the five

T’s: tradition, talent, technology, tourism and trade.” Writing in the pro-Republican Washington Times, Charles Ortel also suggested “the Indian electorate seems destined to choose Narendra Modi as prime minister” but said the outcome “threatens the Obama administration with a relentless string of unwelcome comparisons.” “Now struggling with Russia and with China, and having offended Brazil mightily, Washington is also closer to losing influence in India, just when our struggling businesses sorely need new customers,” he wrote. “Cooling relations with India augur poorly for the many American multinational corporations that could help India modernize while also profiting for the country’s investors,” Ortel wrote. Alyssa Ayres, senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at Council on Foreign Relations, a Washington think tank also suggested “the poll horse race, at this point heavily favoring the opposition” BJP. In the ruling Congress party’s manifesto “the most striking aspect for an American reader is the absence of any specific reference to the United States — not one mention,” noted the former deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia, “For now, the Congress Party’s platform puts into writing an approach to the region consistent with its years in government. “It’s the framing of India’s role in the world, however, that officially presents some ideas that sit less comfortably alongside the notion of India as a rising global power,” she wrote. — IANS

The U.S. can expect four percent average annual growth in tourism during the next five years with a record 72.2 million foreign travelers projected to visit in 2014 alone, US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said releasing the Spring 2014 Forecast for International Travel. “A record number of international visitors continue to choose the United States as their travel destination, which is contributing to our economic growth and supporting millions of jobs,” Pritzker said. All top-20 visitor origin countries are forecast to grow from 2013 through 2018. Countries with the largest total

growth percentages are China (139 percent), Colombia (56 percent), India (54 percent), Taiwan (52 percent), Brazil (50 percent), and Argentina (48 percent). Visitor volume in 2014 is expected to increase 3.5 percent and reach 72.2 million visitors who stay one or more nights in the United States. This growth would build on the 4.7 percent

increase in arrivals in 2013, which resulted in a record 69.8 million visitors, according to the report. Asia-Pacific is expected to produce a 44 percent increase in visitors by 2018. High growth rates and large growth volumes are expected for China (21 percent), Taiwan (15 percent), India (12 percent), and South Korea (7 percent) in 2014, says the report.

AP leader and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on April 8 said he faced a threat to life after being slapped by a man while campaigning for his party here. “These attacks are scripted. When they (attackers) are arrested, they repeat the (same) script,” Kejriwal told the media after being attacked by an auto-rickshaw driver who first garlanded the AAP leader. The attacker then gave a whacking slap, stunning Kejriwal. “Why are all the attacks taking place only on us?” Kejriwal later asked. “There will be more attacks, and we can also get killed.” The attack in Sultanpuri, a dominantly low-income area in west Delhi, left the 45-year-old Kejriwal with a swollen left eye. Delhi braces for first threeway LS battle While Congress refuses to acknowledge AAP factor, BJP claims it will have a clean sweep winning all seven seats IANS, NEW DELHI

D

elhi will witness the first three-way Lok Sabha election on April 10 when traditional foes BJP and Congress will have a competitor in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The BJP says it will win all seven seats no matter who the opponent is. AAP feels its foe is the BJP as the Congress is virtually dead, while the Congress thinks people are disgusted with AAP. “We will sweep seven out of seven,” said BJP leader Harsh Vardhan, a loyalist of the party’s prime

ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and who led the opposition when AAP ruled Delhi. His colleague Vijay Goel told IANS: “There will be a triangular contest but we will emerge on top.” Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed told IANS: “People are disillusioned with AAP and voters who ditched us in December have returned to our fold. Our contest is with the BJP.” He quickly added that the Congress was not taking AAP lightly. AAP leader and former Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia is equally sure his party will win all seven seats.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s entry has twisted the battle for both BJP and Congress in Delhi.

Most political observers, however, feel that the BJP has the clear upper hand in Delhi, and AAP could at best win two of the seven seats Most political observers, however, feel that the BJP has the clear upper hand in Delhi, and AAP could at best win two of the seven seats. If campaigning is anything to go by, the BJP is the clear winner. Delhi is awash with colorful hoardings of

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The Congress has also gone in for heavy advertisement. In contrast, the financially-crunched AAP is virtually absent on the streets and is relying on house-to-house cam-

paigning to reach out to voters. The Congress won all seven Lok Sabha seats in 2009. But in the December 2013 assembly polls, it got only eight of the 70 seats, a dramatic slide in popular support. The BJP, out of power in Delhi for 15 years, won 31 seats. AAP finished with a surprising 28 seats, triggering a nationwide interest in the new party. According to officials, the firsttime voters number 128,000.

Farmer suicides haunt MAHARASHTRA POLLS QUAID NAJMI, NAGPUR

T

repidation has gripped all political parties as they prepare for the first of the three-phase Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra on April 10 in the Vidarbha region. The region, comprising 10 constituencies, has been in perpetual limelight for recurring suicides by farmers steeped in debt. This time around, there is triple tragedy on the minds of the farmers: last year’s drought, followed by floods and this year’s unseasonal rains and hailstorm which have played havoc with their lives. Last month, the desperate farmers even threatened to press the NOTA (None Of The Above) button on voting machines if aid was not disbursed immediately. In view of the election code of conduct, the Maharashtra and central governments could not

rush aid to the affected areas, adding to the resentment and anger among agriculturists. Little wonder that all political parties have gone the extra mile to woo the electorate in the region. From the Congress, for instance, party president Sonia Gandhi shared the dais with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar to launch her maiden rally in Bhandara and Nagpur. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has already made three visits to the region, wooing the farmers and promising to improve their lot. BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi toured the region thrice and conducted a national interaction with farmers. Even leaders of the Shiv Sena, Aam Aadmi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and others have not lagged behind to reach out to the sulking farmers for their crucial votes.

ith a former Indian Army chief, three Bollywood actors and a former top cop of Mumbai in the fray, western Uttar Pradesh is set for a keen battle on April 10 to elect 10 of the state’s 80 Lok Sabha members. The biggest test lies for the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has five MPs from the region in the outgoing Lok Sabha. Faced with caste and community matrix, BSP chief Mayawati is straddled with a never before like situation when her tested social engineering formula is up for a reality check. Then, it has to contain the ire of Muslims who are present in sizeable numbers in all the 10 seats. There is also resentment among sugarcane growers against the two-year-old Akhilesh Yadav government.

SRINAGAR Contending the constitution’s article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir cannot be abrogated without reopening the question of its accession to India, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on April 7 that BJP’s three main manifesto promises are to hoodwink voters and it is not serious about fulfilling them. Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a National Conference (NC) election rally here, Abdullah said: “This is not the first time the BJP is trying to

come to power. The BJP has been in power in the past also. Please remind me what steps the BJP took to address these issues — common civil code, Ram Mandir, article 370? “To come to power, the BJP uses these handles. The moment the BJP arrive at their destination, they put them on the backburner. “As far as article 370 is concerned, it cannot be revoked without-re-opening the entire question of the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India. If the BJP is prepared to re-open that question, we are ready to discuss the issue.” “All this talk about development is negated when Amit Shah stands up and says that this is for revenge. If revenge is their motive, then I think this country has a lot to fear from this personality cult that has been developed,” Omar said.

India Inc. reacts cautiously

T

he Congress and BJP manifestos for the 2014 general elections have talked about revival of economy, job creation and expansion of welfare initiatives but appear to differ in scope, thrust, range and specifics of their promises. Soon after the BJP released its poll manifesto on April 7, the Congress accused the party of “blind copying.” The BJP manifesto ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Great India) has a prominent

released March 26, has a prominent photograph of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi along with those of party president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

NEW DELHI: India Inc. reacted cautiously to the BJP’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, which says the party would attract foreign investment in areas that create jobs and keep foreign capital out of multi-brand trade. “We feel disappointment on the stand on FDI in multi-brand retail, we hold out hope for a possible review in the future,” said FICCI president Sidharth Birla. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) said it

would impress upon the BJP to reconsider its stand on multi-brand retail, as this sector has the potential for a multiplier effect on the Indian economy without disturbing neighborhood stores. According to Rajrishi Singhal of the Mumbai-based foreign policy think tank Gateway House, concerns of mom-andpop store owners have stopped the BJP’s manifesto from eradicating supply chain bottlenecks by encouraging FDI in retail trade.

Not from Congress? You are not secular! Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Ahmed Bukhari has appealed to Muslims to support the Congress. MOHD ASIM KHAN, NEW DELHI

W

hat kind of a deal the Congress struck with Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari in Delhi is not known. But the gist of what transpired in the meeting between Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bukhari is that the former asked the Shahi Imam not to let the secular vote get divided. What the Congress means by “secular vote” is open to scrutiny. If by secular vote the Congress means the Muslim vote (Bukhari in any case has only some clout among Muslims), it is objectionable because it tends to say that only the Muslim vote is secular and the Hindu vote is not. However, in this case the “secular vote” is more a euphemism for the

Muslim vote that the Congress wants en bloc. This is ironical as the Congress wants a community’s vote — and hence it can be called a communal vote — while pretending to be secular.

The issues of development, schools, employment opportunities, Muslim representation in grade A government jobs, inflation, etc hardly find a mention in Congress candidates’ speeches The Congress stand seems to be: If you are contesting on the Congress ticket, you are secular; if on the BJP ticket, you are communal, a hate monger and, in the present scenario, a Narendra Modi stooge. Also, if you are contesting on any

didates, from former Delhi minister Haroon Yusuf to Congress heavyweight Kapil Sibal, taking this line election after election. Irrespective of whether it is a municipal or a Lok Sabha election, the Congress candidates have a sin-

The way Congress party has abused the term ‘secular’ over the last six decades, it has done more harm to the Muslims than good, says the author gle point message for the Muslim electorate: Don’t divide the “secular vote”. The issues of development, schools, employment opportunities, Muslim representation in grade A government jobs, inflation and widening economic disparity hardly find a mention in Congress candidates’ speeches made to Muslim voters. What’s interesting, and tragic, is that they succeed most of the times in garnering Muslim votes. In the current scenario, when the ground is slipping from under the Congress feet, and the writing is almost clear on the wall, the Congress’ only hope is perhaps the “secular” Muslim vote. They have taken this vote for granted in the past. Now that none other than Narendra Modi is spearheading the BJP campaign, the Congress brass must

be seeing a ray of hope in these otherwise disillusioning times. Bukhari must not have suddenly woken up one fine morning to the idea of meeting the Congress president. It is very difficult normally to get an appointment with her or even her political secretary. There must have been some behind-thescenes moves; some carrots must have been dangled for the Shahi Imam’s sake. The horror of the 2002 Gujarat riots have won the Congress Muslim votes in two Lok Sabha elections. Now that the Grand Old party is battling major corruption charges of the last 10 years, it is again raking up the issue. Before deciding who to vote for, Muslims should compare their standing in society vis-à-vis the Sachar Committee findings.

“What you see on television or read in newspapers is different from what you experience live. In our plays, when the audience sees a man crying because he cannot afford to feed his children, or a woman who is vulnerable to rape, it leaves a lasting impression,” Rajeshwar Nagpal,

head of BJP Delhi’s Right to Information cell, explained. Nagpal added that such activities have a direct impact on the voters and gets them thinking. “What they see is very much happening in their lives, and hence they can relate to the situation.”

Wooing the voter: Anything to catch the eye and the ear IANS, NEW DELHI

I

t was hard to miss the welldressed man holding aloft the trademark AAP broom, standing on a road divider in South Delhi. Donning the ‘Main Hoon Aam Aadmi’ cap, the supporter was silently campaigning for the 16month-old party near Lajpat Nagar. With the polling date drawing closer, political parties are not leaving any stone unturned to woo the voters. From street plays and musical performances to interactive sessions over a cuppa are some of the unusual, yet impactful, methods they are employing to catch their imagination. While the AAP is “silently” touching the voter’s emotional chords, the

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has plastered the city with posters of its prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi screaming out to vote for a “Modi Sarkar”. Though not as visible as its counterparts, the Congress too is promoting its achievements. According to Pankaj Gupta, national secretary, Aam Aadmi Party: “It is very easy to recognize our party members and supporters even from a distance because the caps and brooms have become a powerful symbol of our party and ideology.” Amid this visible clout of expansive campaigning, the BJP is also relying on traditional means like ‘nukkad natak’ (street plays) and puppet shows.

Kashkari hopes to EMULATE BUSH

Republican Neel Kashkari is trailing in polls in his bid to challenge California Guv Jerry Brown IANS, WASHINGTON

I

ndian-American Neel Kashkari is seeking to emulate his one time boss, former Republican President George Bush, as he mounts a long shot bid to challenge California’s Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. It was to Bush he turned for advice when in late 2012, Kashkari first pondered the idea of jumping into the governor’s race, according to CNN. For Bush was an underdog when he tried to unseat Texas Governor Ann Richards in 1994, and he ended up winning in that year’s Republican landslide, Bush who went on to win the presidency six years later had in 2008 also

entrusted to Kashkari as a treasury department official, the crucial job of administering the $700 billion Wall Street bailout at the height of the global financial crisis. He asked Bush why he had the confidence to run against the tough-to-beat Richards. “He said, ‘The facts were on our side.’ He thought that she was light on the subject of issues. He was going to focus on the real issues facing Texas as the time,” Kashkari

recalled in an interview with CNN. The channel said “barely anyone believes Kashkari can win in the Democratic state, even in a midterm year that looks more and more hostile toward Democrats.” Kashkari himself expressed some honest skepticism about the enterprise, it said noting he recently compared himself to a smurf, and Brown to the evil wizard Gargamel. After announcing his campaign in January, Kashkari is polling at a paltry 2 percent. Not only is he trailing Brown by 45 points, but

he’s also trailing Tim Donnelly, a tea party Republican. In California’s nonpartisan primary system, the top two finishers square off in the general election. Kashkari told CNN: “I play to win at everything I do.” He has raised $1.3 million since joining the race in January, CNN said. But his opponent Brown is sitting on $20 million.

From 2003 to 2006, Sabharwal was Senior Vice President of Strategic Investments at First Data Corporation/Western Union. From 1997 to 2003, he held several positions at GE Capital, including Managing Director. British Sikhs urged to boycott reception LONDON: Sikh groups in Britain have urged the community to boycott the annual Downing Street Baisakhi reception by the British prime minister this month to protest against the findings of the government’s probe into Operation Bluestar in Amritsar city’s Golden Temple in 1984.

Ukraine seizes back Kharkiv from Russia Two pings heard from search site Authorities hope to free other government buildings seized by the pro-Russian demonstrators soon IANS, LONDON

U

kraine authorities said they have seized back control of the regional administration building in the eastern city of Kharkiv from pro-Russian separatists on April 8. The authorities said they hoped government buildings seized by the pro-Russian demonstrators in Luhansk and Donetsk on April 7, would also be freed shortly, BBC reported. Russia recently annexed the peninsula of Crimea following a referendum. Kiev and the West held as illegal the referendum in the territory, where the majority of people are Russian speakers. Eastern Ukraine was the political heartland of its ousted president Viktor Yanukovych and has a large Russian-speaking population. Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danylo Lubkivsky told the BBC

‘Russia creating chaos in Ukraine’ WASHINGTON: United States Secretary of State John Kerry accused Russian agents of stirring unrest in eastern Ukraine that could be used t for military intervention. “What we see from Russia is an illegal and illegitimate effort to destabilize a sovereign state and create a contrived crisis with paid operatives across an international boundary engaged in this initiative,” he told a committee.

Radio 4’s program on April 8 that the situation in eastern Ukraine was “under control but remains dangerous”. Pro-Russian protestors gathered at a barricade outside the offices of the SBU state security service in Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine, the report said. The Security Service of Ukraine (Sluzhba Bespeky Ukrayiny, or SBU) is a law enforcement agency responsible for protecting the state security of Ukraine. Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov said several Ukrainian policemen have been injured in the operation to free the Kharkiv regional state administration, the report added.

CANBERRA: Search equipment has detected two new signals that could be from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Australian officials said on April 9. The two signals yielded more than 12 minutes in transmissions, retired Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston told reporters at a briefing in Perth. That could help search operators to narrow the area they need to find out whether they’re closing in on Flight

370, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board, he said. “What we’re picking up is a great lead,” he said. The signals could help searchers to survey “a much more sharply defined search area — a much smaller search area underwater,” Houston said. That’s important because the jet’s “pingers” are already crossed the expected 30-day life of their batteries, he said.

UN to deploy 12,000 peacekeepers in CAR BANGUI: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has reaffirmed the UN’s determination to deploy 12,000 peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR), a country that has witnessed deadly violence for over a year. Ban was speaking over the weekend after arriving in the country’s capital Bangui for a surprise brief visit that lasted for a few hours, Xinhua reported. The visit comes a few days before the UN Security Council votes on the proposal to send peacekeepers to the

CAR to take over the charge from the African Union-led International Support Mission for the CAR (MISCA). “I want to continue to urge the international community to act promptly to deploy the soldiers,” Ban said.

SOuTH ASiA TTP’s double game on talks? ISLAMABAD: Is the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) playing a double game -- holding peace talks with the government on one hand and on the other quietly urging its “informal affiliates” to stage attacks in cities like Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta? It would seem so from an alert

Ballot count in Afghan prez poll starts KABUL: The counting of ballots cast in the Afghan presidential election started on April 7 with the partial results declared on April 8, an election official said. More than seven million Afghans, out of 12 million eligible voters, cast their votes on April 5 to elect a successor for outgoing President Hamid Karzai for the next five years in the first democratic transfer of power through polling in the country's history. The preliminary results will come out April 24 and the final result will be announced in midMay. Meanwhile on April 9 the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) urged candidates in the Asian country's presidential elections and their supporters to respect the two national electoral institutions as vote counting continues. India hails Afghan polls turnout NEW DELHI: India on April 5 saluted the people of Afghanistan and its security forces for the huge turnout in the presidential elections, terming it a “resounding rejection” by people “of the designs and ideology of terrorists and their supporters”. In a statement, the external affairs ministry spokesperson said that “India will continue to work to support the people of Afghanistan”. al's special representative for Afghanistan, called on the candidates to wait for the release of official results, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman told reporters.

Sri Lanka rejects international probe COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Government on April 7 refused to cooperate with an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses in the country. External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris said the government will not allow international investigators to visit Sri Lanka to conduct a probe, Xinhua reported. Peiris told reporters in Colombo that an international investigation cannot take place on Sri Lankan soil without the cooperation of the government. The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) had recently passed a resolution calling for an international investiga-

tion into the war in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tiger rebels fought a 30-year civil war before the rebels were defeated in May 2009. Human rights groups and some Western countries pushed for an investigation into alleged war crimes committed during the final stages of the war. Sri Lanka, rejected an international probe and instead appointed a local commission to probe the allegations. The UNHRC had last month adopted the U.S.-sponsored resolution which claimed that the domestic investigations fell short of expectations.

Nepal Prime Minister expands cabinet issued by the interior ministry last week that the newly-formed Ansarul Hind would attack Pakistani cities, Dawn reported on April 8. The source, who issued the alert, however, did not know when the militants would strike, adding that the TTP leadership had wished its “informal affiliates” to create the new group, the report said. “TTP will choose the targets and the informal groups under its umbrella will provide support to the Ansarul Hind activists with weapons and other materials,” the source added.

KATHMANDU: Three months after being elected as the country’s executive head, Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on April 7 inducted three more members into his 21-member cabinet. With the expansion, the number of ministers reached 24, Xinhua reported. Sunil Thapa of Rastriya Prajatantra Party took oath as the Minister for Commerce and Supplies while Giri Bahadur KC was sworn in as the state minister for the same ministry. Nilam KC, a leader of the Com-

munist Party of Nepal- United MarxistLeninist (CPN-UML), was sworn-in as minister for women, children and social welfare. Sunil Thapa is the son of former prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa and Nilam KC is the spouse of CPN-UML general secretary C.P. Mainali. Prime Minister Koirala had been under fire for failing to expand the cabinet for a long time. Koirala is yet to appoint ministers for defense, peace and reconstruction and science and technology.

SRI LANKA break losing jinx Beat India by six wickets to script their first World Cup title win after a series of four losses in the finals IANS, MIRPUR (BANGLADESH)

K

umar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene signed off their Twenty20 international careers guiding Sir Lanka to their maiden ICC World Twenty20 title, beating former champions India by six wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here on April 6. India couldn’t stop the two Sri Lankan legends from ending their Twenty20 international careers on a high note despite heroics from Virat Kohli, who starred again with a fine 77 off 58 balls as the 2007 champions struggled to get 130 for four in 20 overs. Kohli was also adjudged Man of the Tournament.

Sangakkara struck a match-winning 52 off 35 balls while Jayawardene made a run-a-ball 24 as Sri Lanka cruised to 134 for four with 13 balls to spare. Thisara Perera, 23 not out from 14 balls, finished off the match in style with a four. Sangakkara was declared Man of the Match. It was an otherwise clinical performance by the Sri Lankans and the win was sweet revenge for their loss to India in the 2011 World Cup ODI final in Mumbai. It was also Sri Lanka’s first ICC World Cup win after a series of four losses in the finals. They lost the 2007 and the 2011 50-over World Cups and the 2009 and the 2012 Twenty20 World Cups.

Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain Lasith Malinga was bang on target as he opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Indians were done in by their inability to rotate strike and some smart death bowling by Malinga (1/23) and Nuwan Kulasekara (1/29) as they surprisingly managed just 19 runs in the last four overs. Both Malinga and Kulasekara bowled full and wide making it tough for the Indian batsmen to reach for them. Malinga expectedly bowled a fine final over giving away a mere four runs to leave the Indians disappointed.

M

alaysia’s Lee Chong Wei proved why he is the World No.1 badminton player by thrashing No.2 Chen Long of China in straight games to clinch his third $250,000 India Open Super Series men’s singles title in four years here on April 6. The top seed needed only 55 minutes to better Long 21-13, 2117 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. In a repeat of last month’s All-England Open final, Lee won to take a 9-8 lead in career meetings. Earlier, reigning All-England women’s singles champion Shixian Wang of China continued her fine run this year to beat compatriot and Olympic champion Li Xuerui to clinch her first title here. The Asian Games gold medalist took 47 min-

utes to come out on top 22-20, 2119 in a tough contest. The top seed was at game point (20-18) but Shixian showed nerves of steel to, first, save both game points and, then, took two more points to bag the game. The second game was also a neck-and-neck affair with the scores level at 18-all but the second seed pulled out

led from the start. He looked effortless in using his deceptive drops from the back of the court which left his Chinese guessing till the bird landed on court 2.

It was a perfect game for Sri Lanka: Dhoni MIRPUR: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on April 6 admitted that his batsmen couldn’t execute the plans well in the last four overs against Sri Lanka in the final of the ICC World Twenty20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here. “In the middle overs, our batsmen tried our best to get going, but we couldn’t convert the good start,” said Dhoni, after India’s six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the final.

“We could have always got those 1015 runs, but cricket is about those runs. The last four overs they executed their plans very well and for our side that doesn’t play scoops well, that worked for them. Malinga with that slingy action kept bowling it wide. It was a perfect game for them,” said Dhoni. The skipper lauded Kohli for his consistent performance and said the Delhi boy has a bright future ahead of him. — IANS

S

ergio Perez scored Force India’s second ever podium in the team’s seven-year history after the Mexican driver finished third in the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit here on April 6. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton clinched victory after he overtook teammate and pole position man Nico Rosberg at the start. The Briton maintained the lead throughout to win his consecutive Grand Prix in the first ever night race in the gulf nation. Meanwhile, Perez’ teammate Nico Hulkenberg made sure that the team got a double points finish by coming home in brilliant fashion with fifth position. The first and the last time the Vijay Mallya-led team got a podium was in 2009 when Giancarlo Fisichella finished second behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at the Belgian Grand Prix.

India enter Davis Cup World Group play-offs IANS, BUSAN (SOUTH KOREA)

T

op tennis player Somdev Devvarman pulled off a stunning win in the first reverse singles to enable India enter the Davis Cup World Group play-offs with a 3-1 historic win over South Korea in their Group I Asia/Oceania second round tie here on April 6 . India entered the third day of the match with a 2-1 lead and Devvarman sealed the tie for the visitors

with a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 61 win over Yong-Kyu Lim. Somdev, who also had a hard fought win over Hyeon Chung in the opening round, displayed great fighting spirit in the reverse singles as well. Lim, Korea’s top singles player, cracked under pressure despite doing well in the first two sets. Though Somdev won the first set, Lim came back strongly by winning the second set. However, Somdev was in his elements and easily won the last two sets.

The second reverse singles match between Chung and India’s Sanam Singh was cancelled since the tie was already decided. “Unreal effort by @SomdevD to give us the win against Korea! fightttttt @rohanbopanna, #teamindiaaaaaa..” tweeted Singh. For India the win was sweet revenge for the 1-4 thrashing they had suffered against Korea last year when top players boycotted the tie. India now have 4-6 head-to-head record against Korea.

BAPS HOSTS WOMEN’S CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO

Leaders not just in their careers but also in their personal lives.

BY A STAFF WRITER

T

he BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a worldwide sociospiritual organization dedicated to community service, peace and harmony, recently hosted a Women’s Conference themed “Lead from Within” at 10 centers across North America. The March 22 event was aimed at recognizing the “unparalleled leaders we know and admire, to acknowledge the leaders amongst us, and to enrich the leaders within us”. Some 450 women gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, IL to participate in the annual event, now in its seventh year. The conference is inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, in an effort to highlight the empowering role of women in the 21st century society and also to ensure their spiritual growth as it will help them sail smoothly through life’s vagaries. Speaking on the occasion, Ilupi Patel (MBA in Finance, University of Houston), examined who we may consider to be leaders and why. “Are we not leaders when we take charge of a task or project at work, in educating our children, when we care for aging parents, when we make everyday decisions impacting our careers, homes, and families? In truth, everyone is a leader in their own way”, she said. The conference proceeded to discuss leadership essentials that would make everyone a good leader. Sonal Pakvasa, an IT program manager, emphasized the need to understand one’s self, one’s belief system, one’s values, and one’s spirituality. Her talk focused on the need for a connection with one’s conscience as it plays an important role in day-to-day actions. The conference aimed at portraying real-life accounts of people who have not only cultivated, but also strengthened, their leadership qualities with spirituality. Kailas Sanghani, an accounting/finance professional, shared fundamental qualities exemplified by leaders she emulated. She spoke of her ultimate role model, her guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj;

conveying touching examples from his life exemplifying sacrifice, humility, stillness, and courage. She emphasized how his examples provide courage and stability in life’s challenging situations, guide her in everyday interactions and choices, and how that enables her to be an effective, poised leader in all her roles. Andrea Sreshta, CEO & Co-Founder of LuminAID, conveyed the message to “Lead from Within” through her various educational and business endeavors. Sharing her thoughts on leadership, she said, “Realizing the opportunities that you have and not taking them for granted because they aren’t a guarantee to so many other people in the world is a lesson in leadership that I’ve learned so far through different situations in our business.” The audience took inspiration from the conference and realized how they faced similar challenges in their lives. They understood that the choices they make everyday make them true leaders. Sharing her thoughts on the conference, Karishma Patel, an undergraduate student at Marquette University, stated, “By drawing on the experiences of these ladies, who have proven to be excellent leaders in not only their careers, but in their personal lives, this conference has shown me how I can imbibe similar leadership skills.” Khyati Anjaria, mother of three, reflected on the conference in a personal way saying, “It was great to hear of inspiring examples of many women, leading their families not just physically, but also morally and spiritually while exceling in their careers. It has helped me introspect on how I want to imbibe those qualities both as a mother and as a working professional.” After the conference, attendees also enjoyed the opportunity to network and share their perspective on the talks of the day. Members of the audience took notice of their own belief system and gained confidence in their ability to lead in their pursuits. Others recognized their strengths, contributions, and recognized themselves as leaders, some for the very first time. The 3,300-odd international centers of BAPS support character-building activities under the guidance and leadership of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

‘We don’t realize the power of our vote’ Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui dons the role of a TV news reporter for an election special show IANS, NOIDA

hen methodical Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui interacted with people in four Indian states for his new role of a TV reporter in a news channel, he was shocked to see that many don’t realize the power of the vote — and discovered why “development” is just another word in politicians’ dictionary. The Gangs of Wasseypur actor was in the office of Focus News Network in Noida, in the NCR region, that has roped him for its election special series called Kehta Hai India that will go on air from April 12 at 9 p.m. Making his small screen debut with the show, the 39-year-old actor traveled to Patna, Lucknow, Varanasi and Jaipur where he interacted with the locals: from rickshaw

ment doesn’t want people to get educated because that will give power to people and they don’t want that,” he said, adding that it is an “ugly truth” to see most of the people are “clueless” about the power of the ballot. It was also for the first time the actor, who is known for his roles in Kahaani and The Lunchbox, has directly interacted with the politicians and asked them uncomfortable questions related to development and political rivalries. For the show, he interviewed Rajasthan Chief Minister

‘Government doesn’t want people to get educated because that will give power to people and they don’t want that’ pullers to paanwaalas, and from students to shopkeepers — and got a sense of their outlook towards the general elections and governance. He will be shooting for the last episode in the Capital on April 11. “It was sad to see that there are many people who have no idea why their vote is important. Some are voting because someone has suggested that they should vote for a particular party, and there are many who vote for those candidates who pay them to vote,” Siddiqui told IANS in an interview. “I have personally felt that the govern-

Biopics are a new trend in the Hindi film industry. So, asked if she would be fine with a film on her journey, she told IANS: “I am (over) 75. Now it’s a long journey...it has to be made in four parts. But personally, I am not okay with it.” In the last decade itself, the actress featured in movies like Rang De Basanti and Delhi-6. arun Dhawan-starrer Main Tera Hero has earned over `200 million in its opening weekend. The entertainer has collected a whopping net amount of `223 million in its opening weekend, said a statement. Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, actor Tusshar Kapoor is happy with the figures as the movie performed well despite the World Twenty20 final between India and Sri Lanka in Bangladesh on April 6. It is a mix of the commercial content, Varun’s screen presence and the movie’s promotions that have worked in favor of the entertainer, says an expert.

“So, Main Tera Hero withstood the opposition of the two big T20 World Cup matches (with India playing) to safely collect a `200 million+ weekend, cheers,” Tusshar, the brother of producer Ekta Kapoor, tweeted. Main Tera Hero is more commercial than Jal, which also released on April 4. It’s got the combination of Varun and David and since it is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, it is well promoted,” Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines told IANS.

Deepika-Ranveer in ‘Bajirao Mastani’ MUMBAI: The RamLeela couple is back! Actress Deepika Padukone will play historical character Mastani with Ranveer Singh playing Bajirao Peshwa in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali was keen on Deepika for Mastani’s part. But she couldn’t seem to accommodate the long schedules required for Bajirao Mastani, specially since she gave the nod to Karan Johar’s Shuddhi which would take up close to 150 shooting days,” said a source. However, later Deepika is said to have informed the director that she would be able to fit Bajirao Mastani into her schedule. —IANS

t’s not easy being David Dhawan. Over the last 20 years he has constantly kept the laughter alive. Having generated barrels of mirth with Govinda and Salman Khan in the past, now it is time for David’s son to have a blast. Playing Seenu, the no-good wastrel who cons his way through a series of outrageous escapades, Varun Dhawan is to be seen monkeying around in every frame. To his credit, the Dhawan scion carries off the incessant demand on his performing skills. Varun is a like a Govinda on steroids. He pumps up the energy level to the extent that even his two discernibly dheeli-dhaali heroines end up looking they are having fun. It could be just an act. We will never know. Every character is in the wink-wink mode. Cleverly David Dhawan builds on Varun’s contagious gusto. Scene after scene give the star-kid a chance to flex his muscles and

demonstrate his skills at holding a frame up with gravity-defying laughter. Main Tera Hero is the kind of loopy, askew-me plot that

makes no claims to any intellectual gratification. Its naked, unassuming goofiness is its greatest USP. And who goofier than Varun

Dhawan who starts off as a student in a college where the campus beauty Ileana d’Cruz is an untouchable. The neighborhood goon-like cop, played by Arunoday Singh, has put a proprietorial seal on her. To be honest Arunoday has the most difficult part in this anygoes comedy of hell-raising errors. He is shown to be a goon in khaki with serious anger-management issues. Although the plot is skimpier than the two heroines’s costumes put together, it derives terrific energy and sustenance from its leading man’s zest for life. The film is low on aspirations and high on hi-jinks. Moving from Mumbai to Bangkok, the plot is bolstered by a blizzard of low-brow episodes. Even the song and dances are engaging knickknacks, more memorable for being forgettable than anything else. – Subhash K. Jha

Kangana not keen to work with Aamir? MUMBAI: Kangana Ranaut has impressed one and all with her performance in Queen and superstar Aamir Khan is no exception to it. While Aamir has expressed his desire to share screen space with the actress, she doesn’t see it as her “immediate goal”. Kangana says she has had a word about a future opportunity with Aamir, “but there is nothing concrete as yet”. “We would definitely like to work with each other. But I don’t think that as actors, that’s the priority we have. Our goal is to do things that excite us and along the way if we find an opportunity, it’ll be great! But I don’t think that’s the priority...that’s not my immediate goal, “ the actress told reporters here at the launch of Krux stationery products range on April 5. Kangana will next be seen in Revolver Rani releasing on April 25.

Priyanka finds ‘Mary Kom’ inspiring MUMBAI: National Award-winning actress Priyanka Chopra, who is yet to devote 15 days to complete shooting of the biopic on India’s champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom, says every scene in the film is inspirational. “‘Mary Kom’ is the story of every woman who wants to be larger than she is meant to be. Inspiring to do every scene...can’t believe only 15 days left to complete the film. It’s been so tumultuous yet wonderful,” Priyanka posted on her Twitter page. The actress is currently busy shooting for the film, based on the Olympic medal-winner.

MUMBAI: Actress Sonakshi Sinha is working with Arjun Kapoor for the first time in Tevar and says she respects her co-star for being a thorough professional. “He is cordial with everybody. He is not overtly friendly, but he is a very chilled out guy and good to work with,” she said. “What I really respect and like about him is that he is a good co-star and very professional on the sets and knows what he is doing despite the film being his father’s production,” added the 26-year-old. Both Arjun and Sonakshi are star kids — while Arjun is the son of producer Boney Kapoor, Sonakshi is the daughter of actors Poonam and Shatrughan Sinha. Sonakshi knows her co-star since her school days as she, Arjun and his cousins—actress Sonam Kapoor and her sister, producer Rhea went to the same institution.

Soundarya wants 15 years to be a star MUMBAI: Soundarya may have played it safe with her directorial debut Kochadaiiyaan by teaming up with her superstar father Rajinikanth, but she is feeling the pressure of high expectations. She said if her dad took over three decades to attain stardom, she should be given at least half the time to prove herself. She said: “It’s a tough life for star kids...for people they are stars; for us, they are the people that we know.” “As star children, we face the expectations, which is as much as that of the achievers who are the fathers or mothers who took so much time to achieve it. My father is a superstar now, but he took 31 years to reach here, at least give me 15 years,” the 30-year-old, who is married to Chennai-based businessman Ashwin, told IANS.

MUMBAI: Sajid Nadiadwala, producer of upcoming Bollywood film Heropanti, the launchpad for Tiger Shroff, says he feels as responsible towards the young actor as any parent. Tiger is actor Jackie Shroff’s son. “It’s a very strange mix of parental pride and a teacher’s concern. I’ve been part of Tiger’s life from the time he was a child. I was there when he was born. Luckily, I’m also part of his second birth, when his career takes off. So you could say I feel a double responsibility towards Tiger,” said Nadiadwala. He has never felt so nervous about any of my films before. “Tiger is the first actor I’m launching in my entire career as a producer. That he’s being launched during the same year when I make my debut as a director (with Kick) gives me an added feeling of identification with Tiger. “I know what he must be going through,” he said with a nervous laugh, dismissing the contention that being his father’s son would help Tiger get a larger audience.

NEW DELHI: Actress Deepika Padukone, who gave four backto-back hits last year, has been signed as the brand ambassador of Lifestyle International Pvt. Ltd.’s ethnic wear brand Melange by Lifestyle. The 28-year-old recently shot for the latest spring-summer campaign for the brand and she will also be endorsing the brand for its autumn-winter range. “Melange by Lifestyle has an amazing range of salwar, kurtas and churidars. The most amazing part about it is that it is ethnic yet so contemporary. I think it is perfect for modern Indian woman,” Deepika said in a statement. She was also recently appointed the brand ambassador of cereal brand Kellogg’s.

Residents told to guard against ATM hacking

C

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) -- The Illinois attorney general is warning residents about hackers gaining unauthorized access to bank accounts and illegally withdrawing money from ATMs. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the warning follows a report by federal banking regulators that there has been an increase in the number of illegal withdrawals from banks. Authorities say criminals are engaged in sophisticated scams that involve obtaining bank employee login information. They then create fraudulent ATM cards and delete or alter systems that alert banks to unusual ATM activity. Madigan’s office says residents should monitor bank and credit card accounts daily and report any unauthorized charges or other activity. Here are more tips offered by Madigan: 4Set up an alert on your account to receive notification when your credit or debit card is used over and above a certain dollar figure. Many banks offer this feature as a “transaction alert.” 4Beware of callers who claim to be with your card issuing bank. These calls may be a scam. You should contact your bank first at the tollfree number on the back of your card before disclosing any personal information.

11 immigrants held after protest against deportations BY A STAFF WRITER

ROADVIEW (IL) -- Eleven immigrant rights activists were arrested for forming a human chain and blocking an intersection near the Broadview Detention Center last week. Crowds were chanting “Not one more,” and “Two Million Too Many” referring to the President’s record deportations and their demand that he act immediately to stop them. “If the President will not stop deportations, then we will,” said Karen Picazo, whose mother is undocumented and lives under the threat of deportation.

“The President continues to deport our families, his administration has gotten us two million deportations. We need immediate action from the President and it needs to start with administrative relief and a stop to deportations now.” The latest actions are part of the national ‘Not-1-more-deportation’ campaign calling on President Obama to put a stop to deportations with more than 80 events occurring over the weekend nationwide. By the middle of April, President Obama will have carried out two million deportations, more than any other President.

The group asserts that President Obama doesn’t have to wait for Congress to use his executive authority to stop the suffering. He could expand the deferred action program he created for immigrant

he South Asian Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis recently held its official kick-off event at the Saint Louis University School

of Law. Judging by the impressive roster of government, business and civic leaders in attendance, the association will be a mainstay in the regional legal community. The group was co-founded by Commissioner Sreenivasa Rao (Sreenu) Dandamudi, who is also serving as its inaugural president. Currently seeking new members, every licensed attorney, retired attorney, and law student in the metropolitan St. Louis region (both sides of the Mississippi river) is eligible for membership in the association. “During our first year we will focus on building the association from the ground up,” says Dandamudi. “Once we’re established, our goal is to provide a legal network of opportunities for attorneys as well as assistance to those in need.” Commissioner Dandamudi notes that founding the group was a team effort. “There is a core group of over a dozen attorneys that worked to form the association,” he explains. His personal experience growing up in St. Louis was also a motivating factor. “We

Jason Kander & Charlie Dooley created this organization to complement other efforts, such as the Mosaic Project, to continue to bolster the St. Louis region.” An impressive list of legal, business and community leaders attended. They included former Missouri Supreme Court Judge and Saint Louis University Law School Dean Mike Wolff, Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary R. Russell, Missouri Supreme Court Judges Laura Denvir Stith, Zel Fischer and George W. Draper, III. Also present were Missouri House Speaker Timothy W. Jones, Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and State Representative Jill Schupp among many others. At the group’s launch, Judge George W. Draper, III, of the Missouri Supreme Court, congratulated the founders. “The first official event of the South Asian Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis clearly demonstrated the commitment of the founders and future leaders,” he says. “Commissioner Sreenu Dandamudi and the other members of the organization have opened the eyes of the Missouri legal community to the presence and sophistication of the South Asian legal community.”

Even adults could be seen applying colors to the faces and greeting each other. Within half an hour, most of them were covered in multiple colors from head to toe. Bal Vihar continues to strengthen the community while instilling the core values of the Indian culture in younger generation. orking out in the morning may seem like a pain but it’s the best way for a healthy start to the day. Working out in the morning kickstarts one’s metabolism and helps you in burning more fat during the day. So make sure you rise early and be prepared to hit the gym, reports femalefirst.co.uk. n Alarm: Adjust your alarm clock to get up earlier than usual to head to the gym, fit in a run or do some pilates to wake up. n Bag: Prepare your bag or kit the night before. If it’s not done then you’ll only use it as an excuse to not get out of bed. n Snack: If you can’t work out without having eaten first, then

it would be advisable to eat a banana. Just a small one, plus bananas are great for slow releasing energy too. Try and prepare a healthy snack for afterwards too, something that’s rich in protein to help repair your body; boiled eggs are an easy snack as they can be prepared the night before. n Alcohol: Don’t drink too much alcohol the night before a morning workout as it will only give you a headache and another excuse to stay in bed. n Bedtime: If you’re getting up earlier than usual then it makes sense to go to bed earlier than normal time. Now, do you have an excuse for skipping a morning workout sessions.

Tricks for a toned stomach LOS ANGELES: Crop tops are a must-have fashion trend this season, but before you choose to flaunt them, get rid of your belly fat. Try torso rotations or leg lifts for a toned stomach. Femalefirst.co.uk lists four exercises, along with some cardio and healthy eating tips that can help in getting abs in no time. n TORSO ROTATIONS: Torso rotations are great for working your whole abdominal area, including your lower back. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, hands on your hips whilst keeping your lower body still, rotate your upper body as far to the left and right as possible. n LYING TWIST: The lying twist also works the oblique muscles and improves flexibility. Lie on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and your arms are out to the side, with your palms flat on the floor. Lift your legs so that they are at a 90 degree angle to the ceiling, then slowly lower them down to the right. n LEG LIFTS: Leg lifts are achieved by lying with your legs straight. Raise them from the floor and hold them for 30 seconds. n THE PLANK: This exercise is performed at the end of a workout. You need to be in a similar position as a press up but rest on your forearms instead. Ensure you have a straight back and neck and hold this position for as long as you can.

UDF, LDF battle for Kerala’s 24 million votes For the first time in Kerala’s electoral politics, the performance of BJP is being hotly discussed IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

‘Congress made Kerala nursery of terrorism’

A

t the end of a long, sustained, acrimonious electoral campaign, the fate of Kerala’s traditional political foes, the Congress-led UDF and the Left-led LDF, will be decided on April 10 by some 24 million voters. Perhaps for the first time in Kerala’s electoral politics, dominated by the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), the performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is being hotly discussed. The BJP, which has never won even an assembly seat in Kerala, put up a spirited campaign. In the outgoing Lok Sabha, the UDF has 16 members and the CPIM-led LDF has four. The campaign, which began in the third week of March, was marked by slanging matches on issues ranging from the murder of Left leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, a

multi-million-rupee solar scam and a row over the Western Ghats. National leaders who campaigned in Kerala, including the prime minister, touched on these issues. On the surface, the UDF appears upbeat. The otherwise soft-spoken Defense Minister A.K. Antony went hammer and tongs against the

Communist Party of India-Marxist. Antony ruffled many a Left feather when he called the LDF a non-entity and pointed out that the Left will only a dozen seats even nationally. The Communists, especially former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan, believe otherwise. Kerala’s most fierce Lok Sabha battle will be fought at Kollam,

TDP returns to NDA, signs poll pact with BJP IANS, HYDERABAD

T

he NDA got a shot in its arm with TDP returning to its fold after a gap of a decade and joining hands with the BJP for the assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the poll pact with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of BJP and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders. The TDP, which had fought the

1999 election in alliance with the BJP and played a key role in propping up the NDA government, had pulled out of the alliance after the 2004 elections, which saw TDP

losing power in the state and the NDA biting the dust at the Centre. Naidu told reporters that the TDP entered into an alliance with the BJP to serve the national interest. The former chief minister said the TDP and BJP were capable of freeing India from corruption. On the protest by a section of TDP leaders over allocating some seats to the BJP, Naidu said losses and gains were common in an alliance. He said the party would try to do justice in future to the leaders who felt aggrieved.

KASARAGOD (KERALA): BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on April 8 said the Congress has done nothing for Kerala, which has led the state to become a “nursery of terrorism”. Taking a dig at the Congress-led United Democratic Front alliance, the BJP leader said that despite having the potential to become a tourism hub, the state has fallen prey to terrorism. “The life of tourism has become the nursery of terrorism. Kerala had the potential to become a tourist hub, but its potential has stagnated,” Modi said at a rally here.

joined forces with the UDF recently. The other interesting battle will be fought at Thiruvananthapuram where union minister Shashi Tharoor is pitted against Bennet Abraham of the CPI and the BJP war horse O. Rajagopal.

Congress trying to win back expelled Seemandhra MPs IANS, HYDERABAD

T

he Congress is trying to win back former union minister of state and MP A. Sai Prathap to its fold. Prathap, who was one of the six MPs expelled from the party in February, met Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh in New Delhi. The central leader on April 6 had invited

him for talks. He is likely to return to the Congress and contest from Rajampet Lok Sabha constituency for a third consecutive term. He had joined Jai Samaikhya Andhra party floated by N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.

SC stays trial in case against Balakrishnan seeks to change system Jayalalithaa for three weeks FAKIR BALAJI, BANGALORE

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on April 7 stayed the day-to-day trial in a case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minis-

J Jayalalithaa

ter J. Jayalalithaa while permitting a plea by special public prosecutor in the case G.Bhawani Singh seeking three weeks adjournment on health grounds. Bhawani Singh, who was restored as special public prosecutor

by the apex court on September 30 last year, moved the apex court challenging the Karnataka High Court decision declining his plea for adjournment of hearing so that he could undergo medical treatment. The high court had also dismissed his plea against the order of the trial court that had imposed a penalty of `60,000 a day for seeking repeated adjournments and causing delay to the case which is pending for more than one and a half decade. The case of owning assets disproportionate to income against Jayalalithaa relates to the period from 1991 to 1996 and involves an amount of `666.5 million. The trial in the case was shifted outside Chennai to Bangalore by the apex court in 2003 to ensure free and fair trial.

F

ormer Infosys idol V. Balakrishnan is determined to use his clean image to fight “the corrupt system” but finds the going tough in the Lok Sabha battle here. “I am aware of my limitations that are in line with my party’s limitations in fighting a parliamentary election at such a short notice,” the Aam Aadmi Party candidate said in an interview. “Though I do not have the infrastructure and human and financial resources rivals have and flaunt, I have a clean image, proven credentials and an agenda to change the corrupt system,” Balakrishnan told IANS. He is pitted against P.C. Mohan, outgoing BJP MP, and Rizwan Arshad of the Congress in the Bangalore Central constituency. In Bangalore, it has the largest

V Balakrishnan

number of electorate — a whopping 2.3 million. After seeing the money being spent by the BJP and the Congress, Balakrishnan feels that contributions to political parties, especially for funding elections, should be made public. “Like charity, accountability and transparency should begin with political parties to eliminate quid

pro quo and make the system immune to corruption.” Balakrishnan, who joined AAP after the Delhi assembly elections, said he was ready for a long haul in politics and public life irrespective of the Lok Sabha outcome. “As we have to make a beginning somewhere, general election is an ideal platform to intensify the war against corruption by creating awareness and involving the people to become agents of change.” As head of India business unit at Infosys and earlier as its chief financial executive for years, Balakrishnan had vast exposure to the way the “system” works in the corridors of power, and how difficult it is to get anything done in the government without influence or quid pro quo. After he quit Infosys in December, he got attracted to AAP to “join the crusade against the system that needs to be changed”, he said.
