BY A STAFF WRITER T. PETERS, MO – The police in St. Peters are cautioning residents to be careful when paying for gas after officers were notified of the discovery of skimmers at one area gas station. According to Officer Melissa Doss, a spokeswoman for the St. Peters Police Department, the police responded to the Mobil gas station in the 400 block of Mid Rivers Mall Drive on November 30 morning. Two internal credit card skimmers were found inside two pumps. Credit card skimmers can be placed internally or externally on ATMs and gas pumps and typically utilize Bluetooth technology to relay stolen debit/credit card information. The police released a set of precautions for residents. Investigators think it’s possible the skimming devices were inside the gas pumps for the past few days and are advising anybody who recently pumped gas at the station to check their bank statements.

BY A STAFF WRITER LOOMINGDALE, IL – The Bhartiya Senior Citizens of Chicago (BSC) organized a program to highlight the massive issue of blindness in India and to urge its members to help the needy blind people in the country. Guest speaker Dr. Manu Vora, who is founder, director and president of the Blind Foundation for India (BFI), highlighted the work done by BFI since 1989 to support over 15 million visually challenged people in India. BFI’s mission is to prevent and cure blindness and educate and rehabilitate the sightless in India. BSC members loosened their purse strings and made a generous donation of $20,000 during the program. The funds will be used to purchase a mobile medical van (Tata LP407 Star Bus) for Shri Ravishankar Maharaj Eye Hospital in Chikhodra (near Anand), Gujarat, India. The van will be part of the diabetic retinopathy project (clinic on wheel) for a number of villages in Gujarat. BSC office-bearers thanked the goldenhearted members for their contributions towards a humanitarian mission to help the countless needy people afflicted with eye diseases in India.

Shashi Kapoor, however, surpassed both in sheer variety of acting. Be it romantic heroes, ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels, he brought the same charm and intensity to all of them. Though among his first appearances onscreen were as a young Raj Kapoor in his elder brother’s directorial debut “Aag” and the more acclaimed “Awara”, his first lead role was a Hindu fanatic in Yash Chopra’s bold “Dharmputra” (1961). This happened to be oneoff as Shashi, with his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, was more suitable as a loverboy who always got the girl. In this avatar, he once even pipped Amitabh Bachchan — in “Kabhie Kabhie”. He was also famous as a reasonable foil to the smoldering angry man in a number of films and it was in one of these roles where he once spoke the four most iconic and immortal words in Bollywood’s history — “Mere paas Ma hai” in “Deewar”. Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor not only straddled commercial and ‘art’ cinema, but also became India’s first international star, starring in several acclaimed Ivory-Merchant films among others. In these he was not only cast in

period drama pivots on a weak, predictable premise and is more of a redemption fable than a tale of romance and patriotism. The script is simply formulaic and devoid of creases. But when his English boss in connivance with Maharaja Indraveer Singh plans to start a liquor manufacturing unit in Rasool Pura after relocating the villagers, Manga decides to plead their case. But instead, he finds himself being betrayed and the villagers cheated of their land. With run time of two hours and 41 minutes, the film is a bit too long, but the histrionics keep you hooked.

Trump travel ban in full force The US Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to fully enforce a ban on travel to the US by residents of eight countries, including six Muslim-majority nations IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he US Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to fully enforce a ban on travel to the US by residents of eight countries, including six Muslim-majority countries, while legal challenges will proceed in lower courts. Issued in September, the third version of the travel ban placed varying levels of restrictions on nationals from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia and Yemen. In unsigned orders this week that did not disclose the Supreme Court’s reasoning, the justices lifted the injunctions which had been issued by federal judges in Hawaii and Maryland, the New York Times reported. The decision, supported by seven of the nine justices, was a major victory for US President Donald Trump after his two previous versions of the travel ban were blocked or narrowed in lower courts earlier

Plea to impeach Trump rejected WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives rejected a resolution tabled by Democrat Texas Congressman Al Green to impeach President Donald Trump, the media reported. The resolution was rejected in a 364-58 vote, reports The Hill magazine. Every Republican voted with a majority of Democrats to turn away the resolution, while four Democrats voted “present”. Green’s articles of impeachment did not allege Trump had specifically committed a crime.
US tries to avoid govt shutdown WASHINGTON: The US Congress has begun bipartisan negotiations to reach a consensus on federal funding to avoid a partial government shutdown. White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley confirmed that President Donald Trump was set to meet leading Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, reports Efe news. House Republicans have suggested extending the current funds for another two weeks until December 22 in order to reach a consensus with Democrats. The two parties are also at odds over a replacement for the Affordable Care Act. —IANS

this year. Under the executive action, an exception would be made for travellers with “bona fide” links inside the US such as documented business purposes or close family relationships. The ruling did not mean that the apex court accepted the ban as con-
stitutional but that it found persuasive the Trump administration’s argument that an emergency injunction against the ban was unnecessary. The high court is expected to weigh the ban on its merits — and to rule whether it violates constitu-
tional protections against discrimination — in the coming months. The restrictions vary in their details but in most cases citizens of the countries will be unable to emigrate to the US permanently and many will be barred from working, studying or vacationing here. Iran, for example, will still be able to send its citizens on student exchanges though such visitors will be subject to enhanced screening. Somalis will no longer be allowed to emigrate to the US but may visit with extra screening. The Supreme Court’s orders effectively overturned a compromise in place since June when it said that travellers with connections to the US could continue to travel here notwithstanding restrictions in an earlier version of the ban. Attorney General Jeff Sessions hailed the ruling as “a substantial victory for the safety and security of the American people”, despite the advice of terrorism scholars who say that security justifications for the
ban were misleading. A spokesman for the White House, Hogan Gidley, said: “We are not surprised by today’s Supreme Court decision.” He called it “lawful and essential to protecting our homeland”. The progressive Centre for Constitutional Rights decried the ruling. The Trump administration has denied that the ban is discriminatory along religious lines. The President’s first ban, issued in January, was chaotically rolled out and quickly blocked by a series of lower court rulings. The second attempt was also blocked by the lower courts but eventually allowed to come into effect in a limited form. Lawyers challenging the travel bans have argued that each iteration of the restrictions suffered from the same discriminatory intent, evolving from Trump’s pledge as a Presidential candidate to enforce a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the US.
Obama raps Trump over climate pact withdrawal IANS, CHICAGO
F
ormer President Barack Obama has lamented the lack of US leadership in the fight against climate change and without mentioning his successor Donald Trump, who has been dismantling his administration’s environmental policies, he said that the country is in a position that is “difficult to defend”. “Obviously we’re in an unusual time when the US is now the only nation on earth that does not belong to the Paris agreement,” Obama said in Chicago at Mayor
Rahm Emanuel’s mayoral climate summit this week. The meeting was attended by 51 Mayors from the US, Canada, Mexico and France, Efe news reported. “And that’s a difficult position to defend. But the good news is that the Paris agreement was never going to solve the climate crisis on its own. It was going to be up to all of us,” Obama said. A series of commitments were signed by the Mayors at the twoday forum to adhere to the basic world goals for limiting the output of greenhouse gases. They opposed Trump’s decision to pull out of the

climate pact signed by 195 nations. Obama was introduced by Emanuel, who was his first White House Chief of Staff and had invited him to speak for 15 minutes off the meeting’s official agenda. The former President said jokingly that
he was “in the neighborhood” and decided to drop by and he was applauded vigorously several times during his relatively brief remarks, in which he spoke about some of his administration’s achievements in protecting the environment.

Jerome Powell.
There is no date set yet for a vote on his nomination at the full Senate, where he might easily win
enough support as Tuesday’s vote suggested. Powell, who is currently a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors, was nominated by President Donald Trump in November to replace current Chair Janet Yellen, whose term as chair expires in February 2018. At his confirmation hearing, Powell said that he would support the central bank to gradually tighten monetary policy, while ease regulatory burdens on some financial institutions.

Shashi Kapoor once spoke the four most iconic and immortal words in Bollywood's history — “Mere paas Ma hai" in "Deewar”.
India’s first global star

BBC apologizes for Shashi goof-up
T
he youngest of the famous Kapoor brothers of Bollywood, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image -- Raj’s simple, honest ‘tramp’ in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious ‘playboy’ persona. In these he was not only cast in
LONDON: The BBC has apologized after showing two clips of the wrong person while reporting the death of veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor. On News at Ten program this week, two video clips were played as presenter Huw Edwards announced the death of the 79-yearold Bollywood star. But neither of the men shown were Kapoor — one was his nephew Rishi and the other was actor Amitabh Bachchan. predictable roles — a decadent nawab (“Heat and Dust”), a prince-turned-ascetic (“Siddhartha”) or a devious local notable (in “The Deceivers”, opposite Pierce Brosnan) — but also in more realistic, nuanced ones — a lower middle-class teacher (“The Householder”), a flamboyant Bollywood star (“Bombay Talkies”), a narrator to Mohammad Ali Jin-
nah’s life (“Jinnah”) and a poet in the twilight of life and reputation (“Muhafiz”/”In Custody”). But Shashi Kapoor, for all his international prowess, was also a major player in Bollywood with appearances in 148 films between 1945 and 1998, in which he was the sole hero in 61 and a lead hero in 53 multi starrers, supporting actor in 21, did 7 guest appear-
ances and did four roles as a child artiste (including the two RK films). These included such evergreen hits such as B.R. Chopra’s “Waqt” (where he again happened to be the youngest brother to flamboyant elder siblings Raj Kumar and Sunil Dutt), “Jab Jab Phool Khile” opposite Nanda, the madcap “Pyar Kiya Jaa” -- which happened to be
Shashi wrapped in tricolor for the last rites MUMBAI: Veteran actor-filmmaker Shashi Kapoor was wrapped in the tricolor and given a three-gun salute by the Mumbai police for his last rites at the Santacruz Hindu Crematorium. Mumbai police honored Shashi Kapoor by wrapping him in the tricolor and hosted a salute ceremony which included a moment of silence followed by a performance by the Police Company Band. The ceremony also included policemen going down on their knees to show respect for Shashi. Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Shah Rukh
Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Abhishek Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Supriya Pathak, Shakti Kapoor and
Suresh Oberoi among others were present at the cremation. Son of Prithviraj Kapoor and younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor debuted in Bollywood with the 1961 film “Dharmputra” after working as a child artist. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan. Shashi was married to British actress Jennifer Kendal, who died in September 1984. Shashi Kapoor is survived by daughter Sanjana Kapoor and two sons Kunal and Karan Kapoor.
among the funniest movies made in Bollywood, “Haseena Maan Jayegi” opposite Babita, who later became his sister-in-law and mother of Karishma and Kareena, “Fakira”, “Kaala Patthar” — where he held his own against Amitabh and Shatrughan Sinha, “Do Aur Do Paanch”, “Silsila”, “Shaan”, “Namak Halaal” and “New Delhi Times”, where he played a crusading newspaper editor. Then, there were some grey roles in films like “Roti Kapada Aur Makaan”, “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”, “Kalyug” — a contemporary retelling of the Mahabharata in which his character is named Karan, and is totally like his mythological namesake, including in the manner of death. His contribution was recognized with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in 2010 and the highest accolade — the Dadasahab Phalke Award in 2015. A star definitely, he was above all he was an eminently likeable star as all his contemporaries and co-stars attest willingly. And that is ultimately what’s important.

Aiyar’s ‘neech’ jibe sparks row

Rahul asks Aiyar to apologize
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attacked Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for calling him a “neech jaati” (low caste) man and said by this he has insulted all the Gujaratis who will give a befitting reply to the Congress by voting for the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections. “They can call me ‘neech jaati’. Yes, I am from the poor section of society and will spend every moment of my life to work for the poor, Dalits, tribals and backward classes. That is my culture. They can keep their language, we will do our work,” Modi told an election rally here. He was responding to Aiyar who had earlier in the day called Modi “bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai” in Delhi. “He is a very cheap
Kumbh Mela on Unseco list NEW DELHI: Kumbh Mela, the mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith, has been inscribed on the Unesco’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage under Unesco inscribed Kumbh Mela at its 12th session at Jeju in South Korea, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday. This inscription is the third in two years for India following the inscriptions of yoga and Nouroz. The Unesco Convention for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted in 2003, defines intangible cultural heritage as the practices, representations, expressions as well as knowledge and skills that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognise as part of their cultural heritage. According to the ministry, the Intergovernmental Committee observed that Kumbh Mela is the largest peaceful congregation of pilgrims on earth. The festival, held in Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik, represents a syncretic set of rituals related to worship and ritual cleansing in holy rivers in India, Unesco said. The statement said that the Committee “also took note of the fact that knowledge and skills related to Kumbh Mela are transmitted through the Guru-Shishya ‘parampara’ (guru-student relationship) by way of saints and sadhus teaching their disciples about traditional rituals and chants.

NEW DELHI: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asked senior party leader Mani Shankar Aiyar to apologize for his “neech” barb against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Expressing his thoughts on Twitter, Gandhi said that it is not the Congress party’s culture to use such language against political opponents. Aiyar quickly apologized claiming his knowledge of Hindi was not good. He also maintained that he never called Modi a “low born”. BJP said the Congress leader’s remark reeked of feudal arrogance and sycophancy that is inherent in the Congress party.
Minister. Targeting Aiyar, Modi said he came from a good family, has a number of university degrees, was a diplomat for a number of years and remained a Minister in the Manmohan Singh government, but was resorting to such insults. “This is an insult to Gujarat. Not just to Gujarat but to the entire nation.” “You are the people who discriminated on the basis of caste. Not we. They feel troubled. You call us ‘gandi naali ka keeda’. You call us low caste people but we won’t lose our culture.” He said Aiyar was speaking out of the “Mughlai mindset” that “sees everyone as ‘neech’”. Hailing the work of BJP governments in Gujarat in the last two decades, Modi said earlier there used to be frequent powercuts but the problem has been solved now.
Hearing on Ayodhya title suit in February IANS, NEW DELHI
G
iving a new twist to the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, the Sunni Waqf Board on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to defer hearing in the Ayodhya title suit till July 2019 when the next Lok Sabha elections will be over, but the top court brushed aside the plea and fixed February 8, 2018 for commencing final hearing in the case. As the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer began hearing the matter on Tuesday, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, Rajiv Dhavan and Dushyant Dave urged the court not to go ahead with the hearing which would have repercussions for the country’s polity.

“The court should not hear the matter which has repercussions on the polity of the country,” Sibal, who appeared for the Waqf Board,
urged the court to have the hearing in July 2019, suggesting that it would have a bearing on 2019 general elections.
China was informed about drone: India IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndia on Thursday said it had informed China about a drone that crashed in Chinese territory, after Beijing claimed the Indian UAV had “intruded” in its area. India will go through diplomatic channels and ask for return of the drone. Sources said the drone was an Israeli Heron UAV, and it crashed on the Chinese side of the border across north Sikkim. The source said the drone had gone missing earlier this week, but the exact date
Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
of the incident was not revealed. The Defense Ministry in a statement said that the Indian UAV was on a regular training mission inside Indian territory when it lost con-
tact with the ground control due to some technical problem and crossed over the Line of Actual Control in the Sikkim Sector. “As per standard protocol, the Indian border security personnel immediately alerted their Chinese counterparts to locate the UAV,” the statement said. The Chinese side got back with the location details of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, the Defense Ministry said. “The exact cause of the incident is under investigation,” the statement said.
Senior counsel Harish Salve countered Sibal. He told the bench that whatever the repercussion outside the court was not the court’s lookout. As far as the court was concerned, it was “just a case” like any other case before it, he stressed. Urging the bench to commence hearings in December itself, Salve took exception that “it is being presumed which way the verdict will go... You have it (hearing) in December”. Telling the bench that hearing would take long and would not be completed till October next year when Chief Justice Misra retires, Dhavan along with Sibal pushed for deferring the hearing till July 2019. But the court ordered that the hearing would commence on February 8.
Rahul set to become Congress President NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday moved a step closer to be the Congress chief as he was the only candidate left in the fray in the election for the post after all 89 nominations filed in his favor were found to be valid on scrutiny. “A total of 89 nomination papers, all proposing the name of Rahul Gandhi, have been received. These nomination papers have covered all the states,” said Returning Officer for the election Mullapally Ramachandran in a statement. —IANS

Many challenges for Rahul as party chief
Rahul Gandhi, 47, will be the sixth member of Nehru-Gandhi family to take the top position of the 132-year old party PRASHANT SOOD, NEW DELHI
C
ongress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s longdelayed elevation as party chief is eventually taking place at a time when Congress faces an “existential crisis”, as a party leader puts it, and has huge electoral challenges in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi, 47, will be the sixth member of Nehru-Gandhi family to take the top position of the 132year old party. The change at the top is coming on the eve of assembly elections in Gujarat and the outcome there would be interpreted in terms of Rahul Gandhi’s ability as a campaigner and vote getter. But, the next round of assembly elections in 2018 — in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh — will be absolutely crucial for Rahul Gandhi for building the momentum to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections. The state elections, with Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) as the key rival, will also be first major elections directly under Rahul Gandhi’s charge as party chief. Assembly elections will also be held next year in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. The challenges for Rahul Gandhi include fostering a new energy and enthusiasm in the Congress and evolving a new strategy to galvanize the party after a string of electoral
ties. He was the face of Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He has been perceived as a reluctant politician due to some of his longish trips abroad, the delay in stepping up to the role of party chief, his not taking up a ministerial responsibility in two UPA governments and not properly following through some of the issues he raised. Of late, he has been able to
In Gujarat, where success will be a big morale-booster for the Congress, Rahul Gandhi has sought to create a broad social coalition and has forced Modi to react losses since the 2014 Lok Sabha debacle. The Congress has to work hard at the grassroots to take on the relentless election machine of BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party chief Amit Shah. Gandhi has to take a call on forging a larger opposition alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections under a “collective leadership” or projecting himself as the alternative against Modi with support of different par-
counter the perception with his sharp and aggressive attacks on Modi and the BJP. A trip to the United States where he had interactions with think tanks appeared to have done a sea change to the image about him. In Gujarat, where success will be a big morale-booster for the Congress, Gandhi has sought to create a broad social coalition and has forced Modi to react.

Congress’ only major success since its debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has been Punjab, while the BJP, in comparison, has tremendously expanded its footprint by winning states it had never done in the past. The BJP is making efforts to expand its base in states it has been weak,
including West Bengal, Kerala, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Another major challenge for Rahul Gandhi is to revive Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the state having 80 MPs. Gandhi has twice led the party’s campaign in the assembly elections but had come a cropper.
US firms commit continued investments in India Representatives of around 45 American companies at Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad focused on deepening business relations between the US and India, says top Indian American leader AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI
R
epresentatives of around 45 American companies met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) held in Hyderabad and expressed their commitment to continue investing in India, a top Indian American business leader has said. These representatives were part of a delegation of the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), a newly set-up nonprofit organization focused on deepening business relations between the US and India and enhancing the strategic relationship between the two countries. “I can’t talk about the specifics (of the meeting with Modi) because it was off the record. But basically the companies did meet with the Prime Minister and they showed their commitment to continued investment into India,” USISPF President Mukesh Aghi told IANS in an interview.
USIBC President Mukesh Aghi with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar earlier in Washington, DC. (Photo: IANS)
The US looks at building its relationship with India on two broad principles. “One principle is that economic prosperity of India is good for America, and the second principle is that a militari-
ly strong India is good for regional stability,” Aghi said. “If India became economically more prosperous and there was more disposable income, people would tend to buy more US goods, or send
more of their kids for education to the US,” he further said. “If you look at this year, the enrollment of Indian students in the US went up by 12 percent. So we have 186,000 Indian students
in the US,” he stated. “That’s one. Two, if you look at companies like Amazon, look at Uber, look at WhatsApp or Google, you know they have a tremendous market share in the Indian market. Their businesses grow because consumer spending is growing in India because of economic prosperity.” On the defense side, Aghi said that if India became more prosperous, it would spend more money on defense. “If you look at the last three years, the procurement with India has gone up to $15 billion,” he said. “We are talking Make in India also from the manufacturing perspective of defense equipment. So, I think those principles are driving this relationship.” Regarding business environment in India, Aghi referred to the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings which saw India jumping from the 130th rank to 100th. “When this government came in 2014, India’s ranking was 142. And now it has come to 100,” he stated.

Pramila Jayapal in ‘Politico Power’ list She gets featured in the Politico magazine for having assumed the mantle of a House ‘leader of the resistance’ IANS, WASHINGTON
I
ndian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, a fast-rising Democratic star, has featured in the Politico magazine’s “Power List for the year 2018” for having assumed the mantle of a House “leader of the resistance”. Jayapal, 52, is in the fifth position and the only Indian American in the power list. She is described by Politico as a “feisty freshman Democratic lawmaker from Washington state’s 7th Congressional District who knows how to punch back”. “Jayapal, a fast-rising Democratic star and determined critic of President Donald Trump, has
assumed the mantle of a House ‘leader of the resistance’,” the report said. “From her spot as first vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, she has worked as a relentless advocate of civil rights and immigration reform on Capitol Hill,” said her friend and fellow freshman House Representative Ro Khanna. Her most recent drives are a legislative pushback against Trump’s threats to end Temporary Protected Status for thousands of Haitians and Salvadorans by allowing them to apply for permanent residency if they can prove they would face extreme hardship if they return to their home countries. Jayapal also wrote a letter to the
NRI couple gifts Kennedy Centre $1 mn for India fund WASHINGTON: An Indian-American couple has gifted $1 million to the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts to create an India Fund for producing and presenting Indian programming through 2025. The gift from entrepreneur Ranvir Trehan, a leading Indian-American patron of the arts, his wife Adarsh and their Trehan Foundation would provide seed money for the fund. “Our idea,” said Trehan, a member of the Kennedy Centre’s Board of Trustees, “is that there is reinforced programming - that there is more of it, both well-known artists as well as experimental forms, fusion forms. “Now I see in India, there is also comedy in the English language that is coming up and so, maybe there is something to tap up.” The seed money, he hoped, would inspire others’ gifts, particularly from his Indian-American colleagues on the board. “The India Fund will exclusively be used to create and present performing arts, artistic exhibits and/or festivals showcasing the history, traditions, literature, music, dance and/or culture of India,” said the Kennedy Centre president Deborah F. US ‘golden visa’ scheme may be extended AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI
T
hough the three-month extension of the US’ EB5 visa scheme ends on December 8, experts are of the view that the scheme, popularly known as the “Golden Visa”, is likely to be extended. “Although the discussions over revising the EB5 visa programme have been long due, investors continue to apply as EB5 Visa offers an attractive path to permanent residency in the United States,” Jeff DeCicco, CEO and Chief Compliance Officer of CanAm Investor Services, told IANS. Stating that the current US administration is “very active” in reforming immigration laws, DeCicco said: “While it is highly unlikely the programme will be done

away with, there is a high likelihood that the investment amount will be increased. In our opinion, the said increase will not be effective immediately. We feel Congress will give a 30 to 60 days’ notice prior to implementing the new laws.”
Introduced by the US Congress in 1990, the EB5 visa programme allows an individual to invest $500,000 in either of two Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) — a high unemployment area in a US metropolis or a rural area outside of a metro — or $1 million in a nonTEA area that can create 10 or more jobs and get US citizenship in a shorter time than H1-B visa holders. With US President Donald Trump calling for stricter norms for issuance of H1-B visas, largely availed by Indian IT firms, the EB5 visa has been in demand for the shorter route to citizenship it offers. A private member’s bill was also introduced earlier this year by Democrat Zoe Lofgren which seeks to increase the minimum salary of an H1-B visa holder to $130,000 from the current minimum of $60,000.

US shift on Jerusalem flayed Donald Trump reversed decades of US policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital
India declines to comment
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital triggered global flak, including from some of America’s closest allies, amid fears it could strengthen extremists and destroy the region’s faltering peace process. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Trump’s decision on Wednesday had made for a “historic day” and was “an important step towards peace”. But furious Palestinians condemned it and warned that had diminished Washington’s role as a peace mediator. Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas called the decision “deplorable” and said it will not change Jerusalem’s status as the “eternal capital of the State of Palestine”. Palestinians took to the streets in Gaza and the West Bank.

Australia legalizes same-sex marriage CANBERRA: Australias Parliament legalized same-sex marriage on Thursday, overcoming years of conservative resistance with an overwhelming majority vote. Cheers and applause broke out as ministers voted in favor of the bill following hours of debate and emotional speeches at the House of Representatives. Only four MPs voted against the bill, the Australian media reported. “This is Australia: Fair, diverse, loving and filled for respect for everyone,” said an effusive Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as he introduced the bill for a final vote. “Today we’ve voted for love, for equality,” said Turnbull.

Putin was first elected as President of Russia in 2000 and reelected in 2004. From 2008 to 2012, he served as Prime Minister. In 2012, he was elected President again.

Chasing an improbable 410, a defiant Sri Lanka rode on Dhananjaya de Silva’s third Test century and debutant Roshen Silva’s unbeaten half century to score 299/5, before both the captains decided to shake hands with seven overs to go before the mandatory close of play. Roshen remained unbeaten on 74 while stumper Niroshan Dickwella was on 44 when the match ended. With this, India clinched the three-Test rubber against the islanders 1-0 and also equalled Australia’s record of nine consecutive Test series wins from 2005-

NEW DELHI: The 1-0 win in the three-Test rubber against Sri Lanka saw the Virat Kohli-led Indian team equal Australia’s record of nine consecutive Test series wins. In 2016, India thrashed New Zealand 3-0 at home before humiliating England for a 4-0 whitewash. he decision of the International Olympic Committee to bar the Russian national team from taking part in the 2018 Olympic Games is “controversial,” Russian Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov said. “The decision is controversial...Fair competition has always remained the basis for developing sports in our country. However, it will be too early to give detailed
comments before official documents regarding the results of the IOC board meeting are scrutinized,” Kolobkov said on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency. Igor Lebedev, deputy Speaker of the lower house of the Russian parliament, said that Russia must refuse to participate in 2018 Winter Olympics as competing under a neutral flag will be a humiliation for the country. The IOC announced on Tuesday its decision to ban the Russian
national team from taking part in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games over multiple doping abuse allegations. However, IOC stated that doping-free athletes from Russia could still be able to compete at PyeongChang Games as neutral athletes, be in uniforms bearing the name “Olympic Athlete from Russia” under the Olympic Flag, and that the Olympic Anthem would be played in any award ceremony.

In wide-ranging interview, Messi also added his voice to calls for Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli to include Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain in his World Cup plans. Higuain has yet to play a competitive match under Sampaoli, who took charge of the team on June 1. But the 29-year-old has been in prolific form for Juventus this season, scoring nine goals in 14 Italian Serie A matches, and Messi believes his experience will be “vital” in Russia.

Gum disease linked to cancer: Study NEW YORK: There is now one more reason to brush your teeth regularly. Researchers have found that some bacteria that lead to gum disease may also increase the risk of esophageal cancer that affects the tube running from the throat to the stomach. This study, published in the journal Cancer Research, examined whether oral microbiota were associated with subsequent risk of esophageal cancer. Tracking the oral health of 122,000 people in the US for a decade, the researchers found that two bacteria species linked with common gum disease can increase the risk of the cancer. Esophageal cancer is the eighth most common cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer death worldwide, said one of the researchers Jiyoung Ahn, Associate Professor at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. Because the disease is often not discovered until it has reached an advanced stage, five-year survival rates range from about 15 to 25 percent worldwide. “Esophageal cancer is a highly fatal cancer, and there is an urgent need for new avenues of prevention, risk stratification, and early detection,” Ahn said. The study, published in The Lancet, highlights the need for stricter air quality limits and better traffic-control measures in our cities as well as greater access to urban green spaces for people to exercise, the researchers said. According to a UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) report, children’s exposure to air pollution can permanently damage their brains. Pregnant women’s exposure to traffic related air pollutants -- especially PM2.5 — were associated with two-to-six percent increased odds of low birth weight and oneto-three percent increased odds of being small for gestational age, revealed a study published in the journal BMJ.

Quality of life is a broad concept comprising various aspects and is divided into eight dimensions: social, emotional, physical state, physical pain, physical functioning, vitality, mental health and general health. “It is interesting to note that the emotional dimension, which was the one with the lowest values at the beginning, was the one with the highest values at the end of the exercise programme,” said Yaira Barranco Ruiz OF University of Granada in Spain.

Voters all set to overshadow caste in Somnath Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited the temple but a controversy erupted after his name figured in the Non-Hindu visitors book
Prime Minister Narendra Modi BRAJENDRA NATH SINGH, SOMNATH
T
he entry of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s name in the Somnath temple’s nonHindu visitor book may have kicked up a row, but voters in this temple town seem to be sailing with caste, not religion. With a sizeable numbers of Kolis and Muslims forming the winning combination in the Assembly segment of Somnath, the BJP has pitted its outgoing MLA Jasha Bhai Barad while the has Congress fielded 35-year-
Congress VP Rahul Gandhi
old Vimal Bhai Chudasama from the Koli community. Barad won the Somnath constituency in 2012 on Congress ticket but joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. He again won the seat and became a Minister of State for Tourism in the Vijay Rupani government. Pradip Bhai Advani, a selfconfessed BJP supporter who runs a Pan Parlour in the heart of Veraval taluka, doesn’t hesitate to say that the Congress is going to win this seat. He explains why. “Being a Koli, Vimal Bhai is getting most votes of his community. Muslims too will vote him. Besides he will get votes of Ahirs
and some others.” Vimal Bhai belongs to Chorwad village where businesstycoon Dhirubhai Ambani was born and is a Nagarpalika Pramukh. Manish Gohil, an employee of GIDC, said: “Vimal Bhai is our brother and one among us. Definitely those close to BJP would vote for Barad but a majority of Kolis would favor Vimal Bhai.” Bhagwan Bhai Jala, who runs a hotel in Somnath, said his village Bhalpara has around 12,000 voters consisting of Ahirs, Dalits, Bharwars and Prajapatis and most of them would vote for the Congress. “Barad has done nothing for the development of the area. There is scarcity of water and power cuts. Our area produces peanuts but farmers find it difficult to sell them,” he said, expressing his anger vis-a-vis the BJP government. Hira Bhai Nagora and Ram Bhai Nagar echo the same sentiment. Businessman Suresh Goswami in Tower Chowk area of Verawal said Kolis may support the Congress now but as the elections come close they all would vote for the saffron party.

How father’s typewriter inspired Jeet Thayil As a young boy, up till the age of 18, Thayil traveled a lot and wherever he was, his father kept inspiring him SAKET SUMAN, NEW DELHI
T
he clickety-clack from the typewriter of acclaimed T.J.S. writer-journalist George night after night was so soothing that it would lull his young son Jeet Thayil to sleep in the next room. “Perhaps that’s what first introduced me to the world of writing,” says Thayil, shortlisted in the past for the Man Booker Prize and whose latest offering, “The Book of Chocolate Saints”, was released in November. “For me, even now that’s a very soothing sound. If I hear it I can fall asleep... Because it is something that I heard a lot as a child... So I think, if you are a child and you see the adults in your life reading, you become a reader. In the same way, when you are a child and see the adults around you writing, you become a writer,” Sahitya Akademi recipient Thayil told IANS in an interview. As a young boy, up till the age of 18, Thayil travelled a lot. Every time his father got a new job somewhere, the whole family would move with him. From Bombay to Patna, then to Delhi, back to Bombay, followed by Hong Kong and then New York, and back again to Hong Kong. But the inspiration too was continuous. “The first time I read poetry was from his bookshelf,” recalls Thayil -- a hardcover first edition of the
“Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas”. “I read Dylan Thomas, Ulysses and James Joyce when I was just 14 or 15.” Thayil said his travels shaped his perspective of the world. “When you are not in one place for very long and when you are exposed to many cultures as a child, I think it makes you more accepting, less judgemental; it makes you more open-minded about the world,” he elaborated. The author-poet’s self-discovery as a writer came at the age of 14 when he first read the English translation of a French poem “Le Léthé” by Charles Baudelaire, which translates into “The River of Forgetfulness”. “I remember it had a physical effect on me, on my body. I felt it physically when I read this poem. My hair stood up. It had a very profound physical effect on me for a few seconds. I found it thrilling. And then I wanted to write something like that. Once that happened, you are changed. You are never the same person again,” Thayil maintained. What followed was a “totally natural process” of learning the art of writing. “In fact, it was so undisciplined because I was teaching myself. I had no idea, I just read everything that I could read. And then I tried to write. No one was there to tell me what’s good or what’s bad. And actually, that’s the only way to do it,” he added.

Fashion now more competitive: Designer NEW DELHI: Designer Abhinav Mishra, who started his eponymous fashion label in 2009, feels fashion in India has now become a more competitive market. So, he says it is important for young entrants in the industry to have more knowledge about trends. “Nowadays, people are more clear about fashion and about what they need. It has become a more competitive market, so I feel young designers should have more knowledge about fashion and trends. It is critical to understand the pulse of the market and what consumers really want,” Mishra told IANS. “Obviously, the digital age has helped us with a lot more visibility outside of our local markets and that
has definitely changed the landscape of the fashion industry. “There’s a whole world outside of Delhi-NCR and we get orders from all parts of the world and this is an advantage young designers definitely have benefitted from,” he added. It will give a warm feeling. Use soft and fluffy fabrics. Plush rugs for the floor: Do not walk on the cold floor. Add a few rugs and carpets that not only keep your feet warm, but also bring in
color and character. Choose those carpets only that fit the style and shade scheme of your home. Warm colors for the walls: Painting is another way to beat winter blues. Most of us cannot make major changes to furnishings ahead of
every season, and hence a simple paint job does the trick. Bring in lots of candles: Add natural accents and lots of candles to light up the place. Candles play an important role in bringing warm and romantic feel to the space.

40th anniversary of Dances of India BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Dances of India, one of the oldest, continuously running classical Indian dance companies in the United States, celebrated its 40th anniversary with a spelendid performance on during November 17-19 at the Skip Viragh Center of the Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. The company pulled out all the stops as it presented a strikingly original take on Cinderella, in Devi of the Ashes—Cinderella in India. In a script written and narrated by Nartana Prem, artistic director Asha Prem’s daughter, Devi of the Ashes took viewers to the ancient courts of India, complete with two sets of swayamvaras! Theckla Mehta, co-director of the company, choreographed this Indian spin on a beloved Western tale. The performance also featured a feast of traditional Bharata Natyam; company dancers were graceful and playful in a piece entitled Yenimahanandave, which ended with dancers presenting an enchanting take on a solar eclipse. Guest performer Sanjay Shantaram of ShivaPriya School of Dance in Bengaluru, choreographed a dynamic Arishad Varga, in which dancers brought to life six basic emotions in vividly portrayed classic Indian stories. BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL -- After a busy pageant weekend, Suhanee Patel of Lake Zurich was crowned Miss Illinois High School America 2018. Being one of the 24 contestants in various age divisions, Suhanee finished with the overall title of Miss Illinois High School America 2018. “It seemed surreal to hear my name next to the words, your new Miss Illinois High School America is,” smiled Suhanee when asked what were her immediate thoughts. At the November 26 pageant, she also earned the following awards in her age division: Best High School Pride Attire, Best Evening Gown, and Highest Combined Overall Score. Under the coordination of directors Vicki Misuraca and Peter Fosco, along with their exceptional staff, this year’s pageant was held in Rosemont this past Thanksgiving weekend. The 24 young ladies had a fun weekend full of festive rehearsals and competitions. The judging criteria consisted of interview, runway
C
fashion and evening gown competitions. Suhanee is well known in her community for her compassion and desire to help others. An added bonus is her thirst for knowledge and public speaking abilities. These traits keep her quite busy through her Glitter for the Golden: an Elderly Enrichment Program and the newlyadded tasks of Building Respect and Values for Everyone Campaign (BRAVE): an anti-bullying campaign; BRAVE is the national platform for MHSA Pageant System. Suhanee plans to use her title to spread the word of BRAVE to groups such as Girls Scouts, local schools and libraries, churches and more. Also, she will continue work as the founder of Glitter for the Golden Program. This month, she will be delivering December Holiday Party PopUp Boxes to local senior living centers. In June, Suhanee will represent Illinois at the Nationals Pageant in Little Rock, Arkansas. As one of the approximate 200 contestants, her plan is to bring home the crown. “I start each day by telling myself that something better is yet to come, ” says Suhanee.

Indian couple charged with H-1B visa fraud BY A STAFF WRITER OCHESTER, NY-- An IndianAmerican couple in upstate New York, has been arrested and charged with visa fraud, money laundering, false statements, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Anjaneyulu Katam and Mahalakshmi Cheruvu, of Rochester, NY, were arrested and charged by criminal complaint, according to the US Attorney for the Western District of New York James Kennedy, Jr. The charges, announced by Kennedy, carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, a November 30, press release said. The criminal charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. According to the complaint, between 2011 and 2016, Katam and Cheruvu ran businesses in which they allegedly falsified immigration documents for Indian nationals to enter the US and work in tech industries involving computer programming.

The husband and wife allegedly manipulated the H-1B visa program, which allows US employers temporarily to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. The complaint states that Katam and Cheruvu falsified visa applications, work experience documents and work contracts, which they then submitted to the US Department of Labor, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of
State, in order to secure H-1B visas for Indian nationals. Their efforts resulted in the unlawful entry and employment of several Indian nationals within the US, authorities alleged. The defendants made an initial appearance before US Magistrate Judge Jonathan Feldman and were released on conditions not specified in the press release.
Four men charged in $3.5-million tax fraud BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Four men of Indian descent, including Indian Americans, have been charged in a $3.5 -illion fraud scheme in which they allegedly posed as tax officials and then threatened and collected money from over 7,300 people. Wisconsin Eastern District prosecutor Gregory Haanstad on November 30 said the scheme was “likely originating from India.” Moin Gohil, 22, was picked up by law enforcement authorities in Georgia on November 24, and Pratik Patel, 26; Parvez Jiwani, 39; and Nakul Chetiwal, 27, were arrested on November 28 by federal authorities. Participants in the scheme, which is based “likely in India,” call victims in the US, pretend to be officials from the federal tax agency – the Internal Revenue Service – and typically claim the victims owe taxes. They then threaten and intimidate the victims, saying they will face arrest or legal action if they do not send money through services like MoneyGram and Western Union, or provide gift cards with cash value.

peaches. She was sworn in on December 5 as Yuba City’s new mayor, making her the nation’s first female Sikh American Mayor. The single mom, whose daughter Arianna began college this year at Willamette University in Oregon, said she had never thought of running for elected office. But her father’s death in 2011 made her rethink her destiny. Didbal formerly served eight years on the Yuba City Planning Commission and two years on the Sutter County Planning Commission. She has spent 19 years as a civil servant, working primarily for the California Correctional Health Care Services before transitioning to the State Compensation Insurance Fund in 2015. Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., named Didbal “Woman of the Year” in 2015. Didbal also wants to enhance Sikh American cultural activity in the city. The local Sikh community annually holds a mela in May, and a parade in November.

Bronx mugger beats old man, steals $6 BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY- It was a workday like any other for Khalid Mehmood: Pack a lunch and grab his briefcase, out the door by 4.15 am and off to the downtown subway. And then his routine witnessed a sudden turn of events--a brutal pre-dawn Bronx beating and robbery. The Pakistani immigrant was nearly killed on November 29 for $6 in cash and a MetroCard. Mehmood, 64, remained hospitalized for four days after his cruel attacker left the Penn Station newsstand employee with a massive head wound, multiple facial fractures and bleeding on the brain. The Bronx resident was initially placed on life support after a passerby found him bleeding and disoriented on the street minutes after the assault that happened during his three-minute stroll to the No.

6 train. His wallet and briefcase were missing, along with his cash, his MetroCard and his typical bag lunch of two boiled eggs. According to the police, Mehmood was gasping for breath and was not able to describe the attacker who remained on the lam three days later. The victim and his wife, Rukhsana, have been married 30 years. They moved to the Bronx in 1989 after he lost a job with the railroad. Mehmood took his job at Penn Station that same year. Family members became worried when the reliable Mehmood never appeared at his job of 28 years and failed to come home at his usual time of 6 pm. Co-workers confirmed Mehmood never showed up, and then family members heard worshippers were praying at the mosque near their home for a man who was beaten early on November 29.
Rohina Bhandari
BY A STAFF WRITER ANHATTEN, NY -- Rohina Bhandari, 49, an Indian American private equity director from Manhattan, New York, was killed by a tiger shark on November 30 while diving off a Costa Rican island in the Pacific Ocean. The attack also badly injured the 26-year-old male Costa Rican diving guide leading the group that included Bhandari. The shark savaged the two as they were surfacing after a dive off Cocos Island, a pristine national park located 300 miles off the Costa Rican mainland. The environment ministry said in a statement that Bhandari had sustained fatal bite marks on both of her legs, adding that the attack was ‘an isolated incident’ and the first one of such seriousness recorded for the island. The guide noticed the shark approaching his group underwater and tried to scare it away.

Detecting prostate cancer through urine sample NEW YORK: Researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio are working towards developing a noninvasive method to detect prostate cancer through urine sample. Since cells from the prostate are shed into urine naturally, the new method, which aims to make use of a novel microscope based on a photonic crystal bio-sensor, could offer a
more accurate diagnosis. “The system we are developing utilizes a sensitive bio-sensor, which allows us to distinguish cancer cells from normal cells based on a unique feature of the cells,” said Jing Yong Ye, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). “If you can detect a cancer cell,
you’re starting from a more precise place and you can give a more accurate diagnosis,” he added in a statement released by UTSA. To support the development of this non-invasive method of detecting prostate cancer, the US National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute has offered Ye a two-year grant of $354,617.

As per the report, Early Moments Matter for Every Child, two years of free pre-primary education, paid breastfeeding breaks during the first six months of a child’s life followed by six months of paid maternity leave as well as four weeks of paid paternity leave help lay a critical foundation for optimal early childhood development. “These policies help parents better protect their children and provide them with better nutrition,” said the report.
NEW YORK: Researchers have identified a mechanism that leads to bone loss in older adults, an advance that may help develop therapeutics to treat the age-associated bone loss condition. Osteoporosis — the thinning of bone and the loss of bone density that increases the risk of fractures — is a major health problem in older people. Often the condition is accompanied by an increase in fat cells in the bone marrow. The study led by Yi-Ping Li, Professor, University of Alabama at Birmingham, found a protein called Cbf-beta that plays a critical role in maintaining bone-producing cells.
One in five US teens suffers Anti-dengue antibody may fight Zika from concussion, says study IANS, WASHINGTON
CHICAGO: Researchers from the University of Michigan found that one out of five teens in the US reported at least one concussion diagnosis, and 5.5 percent of them have had more than one concussion, according to a new study released this week. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), also indicated that teens playing contact sports, which emphasize or require physical contact between players, are more likely to suffer from concussions. Among all the adolescents included in this study, the findings showed that 19.5 percent of teenagers who’ve been playing one of the 21 different sports in the past 12 months, reported at least one diagnosed concussion in their lifetime, Xinhua reported.
A
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, concussions can lead to headaches, nausea and irritability, while between 10 and 20 percent may experience symptoms like depression, headaches or difficulty concentrating. The findings come at a time as interest in concussions among professional athletes, especially those in the National Football League, has increased in the US.
n anti-dengue antibodybased drug could potentially protect a mother and her foetus from the deadly Zika virus as well, suggests new research. In experiments with mice, the researchers found that an antibody that protects against dengue virus is also effective against Zika. “We found that this antibody not only neutralizes the dengue virus but, in mice, protects both adults and foetuses from Zika disease,” said Michael Diamond, Professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and senior author of the study published in the journal Nature Immunology. Antibodies remain in the bloodstream for weeks, so one or a few doses of an antibody-based drug given over the course of a woman’s pregnancy potentially could pro-
tect her foetus from Zika, with the added benefit of protecting her from both Zika and dengue disease, the researchers said. Dengue causes high fever, severe headaches, and joint and muscle pain in children and adults but does not directly harm foetuses. Since dengue and Zika are related viruses, the researchers reasoned that
an antibody that prevents dengue disease may do the same for Zika. The findings suggested that for the antibody to effectively protect foetuses from Zika infection, it must be administered soon after infection. The researchers have a version of the antibody that would be therapeutic against both viruses and safe for use in a dengue-endemic area.
