‘Snooping row won’t affect ties’

With widespread protests in India over reports of NSA spying on BJP, the US hopes diplomatic talks won’t be affected IANS, WASHINGTON

A

mid a row over reports that the United States National Security Agency was authorized to spy on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2010, the U.S. hopes it would not impact ties with India. “Well, we certainly hope not,” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters when asked if the incident would impact U.S. ties with India as the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi belongs to BJP. “As you know, there’s been an invitation issued for a visit, and

we’re looking forward to that, hopefully in the fall,” she said referring to President Barack Obama invitation to Modi to visit the U. S. “We look forward to continuing discussion on a full range of bilateral and regional issues,” Psaki said. Citing documents

Psaki, however, declined to “comment publicly on every specific alleged intelligence activity”. She also cited a January 17 speech in which Obama had “made clear that he’s instructed his national security team as well as the intelligence community to work with foreign counterparts to

Psaki said diplomats from the U.S. embassy in New Delhi had met with their counterparts in the External Affairs Ministry “on this issue. Asked if BJP had been taken off the list since it had now become the ruling party, she said: “I’m just

not going to have any more details I can lay out for you, other than to convey that we have a deep and broad partnership with India.” “We will discuss any concerns that are we need to discuss through our private diplomatic channels. And obviously, that is already ongoing, including as it relates to these specific reports,” she added.

India, US keen to revitalize strategic partnership Burns headed to India ahead of strategic dialogue IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he United States has high expectations about the latest momentum of India’s economic growth under the new government, Senator John McCain told Prime Minister Narendra Modi after meeting him on July 3. McCain conveyed the keen desire in the U.S. to work with him to revitalize the India-U.S. strategic partnership. The prime minister said he hoped for forward looking visit to the U.S. in September this year to take the relationship to a new level. “Prime Minister conveyed his desire to further deepen and expand the strategic partnership, based on our shared values and interests, sensitivity to each other’s concerns and tangible progress across the full spectrum of bilateral relations,” said

US to sell Harpoon missiles to India WASHINGTON: The United States Government has notified the United States Congress of its plans to sell to India 22 anti-ship missiles at an estimated cost of $200 million, saying it would help strengthen the US-India strategic relationship. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which handles foreign arms sales, said it had delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale following approval of India’s request by the State Department. India, it said, has requested a possible sale

of 12 UGM-84L Harpoon Block II Encapsulated Missiles, 10 UTM-84L Harpoon Encapsulated Training missiles, two Encapsulated Harpoon certification training vehicles, con-

tainers, spare and repair parts. This Harpoon missile system will be employed on the Indian Navy’s Shishumar class submarine (Type209) and will provide enhanced capabilities in defense of critical sea lines of communication. India has already purchased Harpoon missiles for integration on Indian Air Force Jaguar aircraft and Indian Navy P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. India will have no difficulty absorbing these additional missiles into its armed forces, the agency said. —IANS

top United States diplomat is headed to India to prepare the ground for their strategic dialogue ahead of the first summit meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reset IndiaU.S. ties. Deputy Secretary of William J. Burns “will be the highest-level Administration official to visit since the inauguration of the new Indian Government” headed by Modi, who for long had been persona non grata in Washington before his “resounding” electoral victory in May. Burns, who will be in India on July 10-11, “will discuss the full range of bilateral issues — including economic, energy, and security cooperation — with senior Indian officials,” a State Department announcement said. “This trip is an opportunity to further strengthen and deepen this important bilateral relationship,” it said. Burn’s trip to New Delhi is expected to be followed by a visit of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry later this month for the India-US Strategic Dialogue with the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj although it’s Washington’s turn to host it. The U.S. was much behind its European partners in reaching out to Modi in the run up to India’s parliamentary victory, but his “resounding” victory quickly ended U.S. hesitation. As soon as the results were announced Obama made a call to congratulate Modi and invited him

to the U.S. and Secretary of State John Kerry “echoed” the invitation. But surprisingly Modi too was quick to accept the invitation proving wrong doomsayers who expected a rough road ahead given the 2005 U.S. revocation of Modi’s tourist/business visa for his alleged inaction during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Thus “Washington has largely been pleasantly surprised at how responsive the new Indian Government has been to American outreach,” as Richard M. Rossow, Wadhwani Chair in U.S. India Policy Studies at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, put it. Another expert believes that recognizing India as one of its most important strategic partnerships, the U.S. is keen to push boldly on expanding the envelope of cooperation with Modi government.

Indian-origin doctors discuss plan with India’s Health Minister Harsh Vardhan during AAPI’s annual convention

O

ne of the largest ethnic organizations in the United States, representing about 100,000 Indian doctors settled in the U.S. is working on a plan to help India improve its health services in a coordinated fashion. The outlines of the plan were discussed with India’s new health minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, at a strategic planning session during the annual convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) in San Antonio, Texas last week. “What he wants us to do is to get a firm written commitment from AAPI members about what they can do in India,” Dr. Jayesh Shah, who handed over charge to the new AAPI President Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar at the convention, told IANS in an interview. “Whether they want to spend two days or one week a year in India or want to give money or go to a university to provide continuing medical education (CME) or want to do camps there, they should give a firm commitment.” Once AAPI compiles that data, Vardhan has promised to get “all these things done” through the “Swasth India Portal”, which was officially launched by Vardhan dur-

Dr. Jayesh Shah, former AAPI president.

‘What he wants us to do is to get a firm written commitment from AAPI members about what they can do in India’ ing the convention, Shah said. Shah considers bringing together the diverse group with varied opinions on many issues to get several projects done, a key achievement of his tenure. These included child-

hood obesity issues in the U.S. and a partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA) to reduce stroke and heart attack in India and globally, he said. AAPI also has a partnership with the American College of Physicians (ACP) to develop education networks. Another key achievement from advocacy stand point was winning support for J-1 exchange visa waiver program that would allow international medical graduates from India to continue to stay in the U.S. after completion of their studies.

The appointment of Venkatesan, who is also a venture partner at impact investor Unitus Seed Fund, was announced on July 7 by The Rockefeller Foundation, a New York-based philanthropic organization with a mission of “advancing the well-being of humanity.” “With our commitment to catalyse new ideas and innovations at The Rockefeller Foundation, I am delighted to welcome Ravi Venkatesan, a proven leader with strong business and technology backgrounds,” said Board Chair David Rockefeller, Jr. “His experience will be invaluable in advancing the Foundation’s commitment to scaling innovations that expand opportunity, realize shared prosperity, and create jobs for more people globally.” “Our century of investment in Asia has focused on addressing our dual goals of promoting more inclusive economies and building greater resilience against shocks and stresses,” said Judith Rodin, President of The Rockefeller Foundation. “Ravi, with his commitment to philanthropy along with his eye for solutions and relentless drive for innovation, will provide essen-

He was instrumental in creating Microsoft India’s Project Shiksha, a computer literacy program which has so far trained over 40 million school children in India. Prior to Microsoft, Ventakesan was the Chairman of Cummins India, a leader of power solutions and engines. US court to hear woman’s case in Sept NEW YORK: A U.S. court will hear in September the case of an Indian-American woman who has been accused of neglect in the death of her newborn a year ago, a media report said. Purvi Patel, 32, has been charged with Class A felony in connection with the death of her seven-month-old infant, who was found dead in a dumpster in Mishawaka in the US state of Indiana in July last year, South Bend Tribune reported. Patel appeared before St. Joseph

Superior Court Judge for a motion for continuance. The judge officially set September 29 for a jury trial after numerous trial dates had been set for Patel throughout the past year. Patel’s defense attorney, Jeff Sanford, had previously asked for the trial to be postponed for a few more months. Modi prevails over saffron saga Modi government is clearly aware that neither an egregious display of conservatism nor an uncalled-for trip at the tax-payers’ expense will enhance its image of purposefulness Hence the speed with which a Goa minister retracted his disapproval of women wearing short dresses in pubs or bikinis on the beach. A few days earlier, in the same state, a proposal to send a team of legislators to Brazil ostensibly to learn about the handling of World Cup matches was nipped in the bud. he Hindutva fundamentalists may be slowly realizing that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory is unlikely to help their cause as much as they would have liked. For instance, any sense of elation which they felt when Narendra Modi said during the election campaign that the Bangladeshi infiltrators would have to pack their bags and leave on the day the results were announced must have dissipated by now. It isn’t only the good neighborly relations which New Delhi wants to establish with Dhaka which must have disheartened the saffron camp but also the suggestion for visa free entry for Bangladeshis below the age of 13 and above 65 years, which has been opposed by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. What these overtures emphasize is the primacy of development on Modi’s agenda, calling for eschewing any possibility of tension in the South Asian region. Since this may not be feasible where China and Pakistan are concerned, New Delhi is apparently keen to establish benign ties at least with Dhaka, ignoring the earlier imputations by the Rashtriya Swayamsevek Sangh (RSS)-led

What is evident from these turns of events is that development has aspects other than mere economic growth. It is not only a matter of roads and bridges — and bullet trains which seem to hold a special fascination for Modi — but also

reducing all manner of controversies to the minimum since they may queer the pitch for investment. The government’s exhortations, therefore, to its supporters to be careful in their comments on the social scene are in sync with its desire for a business-friendly environment. Any hint of misogyny, or an attempt at what has been called a psycho-analytic explanation for crimes against women, are to be avoided.

But outside the field of economics, Modi’s main achievement may well be the taming of the saffron extremists. clearly aware that neither an egregious display of conservatism nor an uncalled-for trip at the tax-payers’ expense will enhance its image of purposefulness. It is aware that an economic program, which highlights the capitalistic agenda represented by glittering malls and multiplexes, cannot be implemented in an atmosphere where women have to be careful of not offending ultra-orthodox sentiments.

But by openly disapproving of such sections in the saffron ranks, the Modi government has shown an assertiveness which is not common among the Indian politicians who tend to take the line of least resistance, especially where conservative sensibilities are concerned. However, by sidelining some of the key preferences of the Hindutva camp on matters of religion such as the Ram temple, or on the social scene such as women’s dresses, the government has underlined its wish to follow a new course, which is markedly different from what used to characterize the BJP and the RSS in the 1990s when the traditionalists held sway. Modi can be said, therefore, to have prevailed against the traditionalists. His trump card is economic revival. If the growth rates go up and there is hope that the employment situation will improve, his acceptability will be even wider than at present even if his “bitter medicines” in the shape of extracting user charges from the public are criticized by his political opponents. But outside the field of economics, Modi’s main achievement may well be the taming of the saffron extremists.

It’s time to soak in the hills of Himachal VISHAL GULATI, SHIMLA

s life in most of the plains of northern India is still hot and sweaty — and sizzling — owing to delay in the onset of the monsoon, the rain-soaked peaks of Himachal Pradesh’s popular tourist resorts are luring visitors to the state. Hospitality industry representatives say the onset of monsoon in the hills and delay in the plains would definitely draw more holiday-makers from the plains. “Normally the monsoon arrives here (in the hill state) well in advance compared to the plains. But this time there is still uncertainly about its arrival in the plains. The coming weeks hopefully will do brisk business,” Vijay Sharma, deputy general manager of staterun Hotel Holiday Home in Shimla, told IANS. Shimla and its nearby destinations like Kufri, Chail and Narkan-

da, Dharamsala and Palampur in Kangra district, Sangla and Chitkul in Kinnaur district and the entire Kullu-Manali region are chock-ablock with tourists, say officials of the state tourism department. “If the monsoon remains erratic in the plains, we are expecting a good rush even in July,” Sharma added. “An overcast sky, off-and-on drizzle and aroma of chill perk up one’s insipid spirits,” Riya Sharma, a tourist from Mumbai, remarked while enjoying the cool climes of Shimla. Her husband Sukrit said the romance of passing above the clouds and venturing into them was memorable. Manmohan Singh, director of the Shimla meteorological office, told IANS that monsoon hit the state July 1. Though the monsoon was delayed by three-four days the state has been experiencing moderate to heavy rains since its onset, he said. Shimla, popularly known as

Shimla and its nearby destinations like Kufri, Chail and Narkanda are chock-a-block with tourists during summer.

Queen of Hills, experienced 95 mm rain, the highest in the state, on Wednesday. Most of the prominent tourist destinations like Dharamsala, Palampur, Manali, Kasauli, Kufri, Narkanda, Chamba and Dalhousie witnessed rainfall,

bringing down temperatures to comfortable levels. Here are a few tips: Make sure your trip is planned well in advance. Check on general road conditions and confirm whether the high mountain passes are open.

Most of the picturesque destinations in Kinnaur, Chamba, Lahaul and Spiti, Shimla are at high altitudes. During monsoon, you must carry woollens, jackets and some eatables as you may have to remain stranded on the roadside for days.

Iraqi forces poised for Tikrit, clashes on BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces brace for a major offensive to retake control of Tikrit city, as the troops continued to battle insurgent groups across the country, security sources said on July 8. The security forces have been holding control over the perimeter and entrances of Tikrit, 170 km north of the Baghdad, after seizing the areas around the city like Uojah town, lying south of Tikrit, Xinhua reported citing the Iraqi military spokesman Qassim Atta as saying in Baghdad. “We are coming closer to achieve our goal to enter Tikrit, and our forces are ready within very short period to enter

the city, but we also are keen to avoid casualties among civilians,” Atta said. Separately in the northern Salahudin province, Sunni militants, claiming to be from Al-Qaida offshoot Islamic State (IS), carried out attacks to seize the strategic Baiji oil refinery near Baiji, 200 km north of Baghdad, but were repelled by the security forces, Atta added. Atta said the villagers near Baiji clashed with the IS militants, destroying its vehicles. The army helicopter gunships provided aerial support to tribesmen in the village to resist the invading IS militants, Atta added.

Israel steps up attack in Gaza, 23 killed RAMALLAH: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on July 8 accused Israel of rejecting a truce with the Palestinians to end the tension in the Gaza Strip. “I contacted the Palestinian factions in Gaza and they want to reach calm, but Israel rejects reaching calm,” Xinhua quoted Abbas in a televised speech. Earlier on July 8 morning, Israel launched “Operation Protective Edge” in the Hamas-controlled Gaza to quell incessant rockets, projectiles and mortars fired from there into Israel. Medics said 23 Palestinians, including

six children, were killed and more than 122 injured, seven of whom in serious conditions, during intensive Israeli air strikes on Gaza on July 8. Hamas armed wing al-Qassam Brigades has, for the first time ever, claimed responsibility for launching long-range rockets that hit Israeli towns including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. He assured that he will go to the international agencies “to stop the Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people”, adding that “the unity government will do all its best to help the Palestinians in Gaza and Jerusalem.”

massive attack, including suicide bombings, launched on July 9 by Taliban militants against the police headquarters and provincial governor’s office in Kandahar city, the capital of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, left 31 people dead, Abdul Raziq, a provincial police official, said. “A total of 22 suicide bombers launched a massive offensive against the police headquarters and provincial governor’s office this morning and security personnel retaliated, killing all the attack-

ers within an hour,” Raziq said at a press conference. Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, who claimed to speak for the Taliban, spoke to the media via telephone from an unknown location and claimed responsibility for the massive attack and insisted there have been huge casualties and damage in terms of life and property on the government side. Earlier, at least 16 people, including four NATO soldiers, Afghan school children and four Czech soldiers were killed on July 8 in a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan’s Parwan province.

Bangladesh to get disputed waters DHAKA: A United Nations court has ruled that most of the disputed 25,602 sq km exclusive economic zone and territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal belong to Bangladesh. In a press briefing on July 8, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali has welcomed the ruling, saying it was a “victory for both sides”. “The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) verdict awarded us with 19,467 sq km out of 25,000 sq km disputed area with India in the Bay of Bengal,” he said at a press briefing. The official said the island, known as New Moore Island to the Indians and South Talpatti Island to the Bangladeshis, has fallen in India’s part of the Bay of Bengal. The Bangladeshi government Monday received the copy of the verdict from the PCA on the maritime boundary dispute between Dhaka and New Delhi, Xinhua reported. Dhaka lodged the case against New Delhi with the PCA in October 2009 as both the countries failed to come to a solution in the past decades since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. The court conveyed its verdict to both the parties Monday but imposed an embargo on making it public before 24 hours as part of its rules.

Nepal seeks two ALH Dhruvs from India KATHMANDU: Nepal has proposed purchase of two advanced light helicopters (ALHs), generically named HAL Dhruv, from India at a highly subsidized price. The Nepali proposal, forwarded at the 11th Bilateral Consultative Group meeting here, envisages a 40 percent down payment by Nepal and an Indian waiver on the remaining 60 percent, a top diplomatic source told IANS following the conclusion of the two-day talks on July 7. The Indian side was reportedly positive on Nepal’s request but detailed negotiations for procuring the ALHs will be carried out later. Earlier, India had provided two ALHs to the Nepal Army during the second

Constituent Assembly elections in November last year for monitoring of election security. According to the official, the Nepal Army purchases only military stores, weapons and logistics from India but “we hoped the Indian side will be agreeable to providing the helicopters at a modest price”.

Arrest warrant against Pakistan TV anchor ISLAMABAD: A court in Islamabad on July 7 issued an arrest warrant against Pakistani TV anchor Mubashir Lucman, media reported. Lucman is a talk show host on the channel ARY News, Dawn online reported. The arrest warrant was issued during a hearing initiated by the Independent Media Corporation (IMC) and Independent Newspapers Corporation (INC). Lucman has been accused of defaming and ridiculing public officials, including senior court judges, during his talk show. Earlier this month, he was barred by

the Islamabad High Court (IHC) from presenting any more shows. The IHC on July 2 had also issued a bailable arrest warrant against Lucman. The hearing of the case was adjourned to September 6. 13 MILITANTS KILLED IN AIR RAIDS At least 13 suspected militants were killed Tuesday after jet fighters attacked hideouts in Pakistan’s tribal region of North Waziristan. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the air strikes were carried out in the Degan area, destroying seven hideouts, Dawn online reported.

Hope and despair for Kerala nurses Although 46 Indian nurses return back safely, some others working in Baghdad are in a double mind whether to come or stay back following the recent spurt in violence in the country IANS, KOCHI/HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI

nding a tense period, 183 Indians stranded in strifetorn Iraq, including 122 nurses — 46 from Kerala freed by Iraqi insurgents, 52 from Telangana and 24 from Andhra Pradesh — arrived home on July 6 to a grand welcome while 200 more were on their way. A special Air India flight from Erbil, capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, carrying the 183 landed in Kochi close to noon with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his cabinet colleagues, legislators, Lok Sabha members and state government officials waiting to receive them. The 78 from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including the 76 nurses, later reached Hyderabad by the special flight and officials were making arrangements to send them to their respective hometowns.

SHORT NOTES FIRST BULLET TRAIN ON MUMBAI-AHMEDABAD ROUTE NEW DELHI: Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on July 8 said that the first dedicated bullet train project will be launched on the MumbaiAhmedabad route for which many feasibility studies have been conducted. “The Indian railways is on its way to achieve the long dream of the people of India to have bullet trains. The first such train project will come up on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route,” Gowda said, presenting his maiden railway budget in the Lok Sabha.

Officials said that the questioning started around 11.30 a.m. for four hours. Narasimhan was questioned as a witness in the case. It was a mad scramble, with anxious family members hugging and kissing their dear ones. While some cried in happiness, others were seen clutching the hands of toddlers, most of them children of these nurses, who for the past nearly three weeks never imagined such an arrival. Sandra Sebastian, one of the nurses, told the media at Kochi airport that she was very scared when they were taken away by the insurgents. “... very afraid... will not go back,” she said in broken English. Chandy earlier said that at one point of time, he had lost all hope as the plane did not get permission to land in Erbil because of strong winds. He thanked External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for all her efforts.

Nurses in double mind Seventy-four nurses from Kerala working at the Baghdad Medical City are in two minds — whether or not to return to India — following the violence in the West Asian nation, a nurse said. The nurse told IANS over phone from Baghdad that at the moment things were normal where the nurses were located, and the situation remains as it was when they arrived in January. “Occasionally, we hear sounds of explosions... and by now, we know when a car bomb has exploded. This has been like this since we came. If you ask us, right now things are the same as we first came, so honestly we are in two minds,” the nurse said. “If there are no issues here, we want to be here and working. If not, we want to return. Even though we came here in January, we inked our contract in September 2013.”

indi, which is India’s national language, isn’t an official language in the Kerala assembly, Deputy Speaker N. Sakthan told legislators who were taken aback. Sakthan was occupying the chair in the assembly during question hour when opposition legislator Jameela Prakasam in her question to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, spoke in Hindi. She asked him what happened to his promise that he would increase the number of women police offi-

cials in the state police force from five percent to 10 percent. At the end of his reply, Chen-

nithala turned to Hindi and assured the house that his promise would become a reality soon.

Sakthan promptly intervened and pointed out that Hindi cannot be used in the house as it’s not the official language. According to him the official languages that can be used on the floor of the assembly include Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and English. However, Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed, known to be an authority on the rules and procedures of the assembly, said that Hindi has been used on the floor of the assembly previously. But Sakthan said as per rule 305 use of Hindi is not allowed as it is not one of the approved languages.

roposing to hike the tax exemption limit by `50,000 for all individuals, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on July 10 presented the national budget for this fiscal with concerns over economic slowdown while promising bold corrective measures to unburden the poor from rising prices, revive investor confidence and cut excessive expenditure. “People of India have voted decisively for change,” Jaitley said in what was the maiden budget for himself and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. “Steps I unveil in the budget aim at 7-8 percent growth over the next threefour years, lower inflation, less fiscal deficit and a manageable current account deficit.” The finance minister said he proposed the tax exemption limit for individuals below 60 years at `250,000, subject to parliament’s approval, and `300,000 for senior citizens. Deductions allowed under various heads such as investments in insurance, pension and house rent are also proposed to be raised by `50,000 to `150,000. The minister said given the state of the economy today, high inflation, low growth and moderate rise in tax collections, the fiscal deficit target of 4.1 percent of India’s gross domestic product set by his predecessor P. Chidambaram was a “daunting” task. “But I have decided to accept this target as a challenge,” he said, adding he will seek to further bring

down the fiscal deficit to 3.6 percent for the next fiscal and to 3 percent in the year after. He said the country cannot be made to suffer due to indecisiveness and populism and there was an urgent need to revive growth in manufacturing and infrastructure. “We will also examine proposals for more autonomy to banks.” The finance minister said the possibility of a poor monsoon and

the Iraq crisis were key challenges with a bearing on both government finances and inflation. But he said the situation will be monitored closely to initiate immediate corrective steps. “Financial stability is the foundation of our recovery.” Jaitley also promised early introduction of the pan-India goods and services tax, while assuring the domestic and global investment

community of predictability in the tax regime to restore confidence about the country’s prospects. The budget for current fiscal comes against the backdrop of the Economic Survey 2013-14, the annual report card on the state of the nation, which has termed inflation-control, job creation and pushing growth as the three main challenges, while calling for a fresh dose of reforms. Expectations have been high from the budget after Modi came to power with a landslide victory in the general elections, mainly on the promise of ushering in happy days for India’s 1.2 billion people by creating more jobs, providing relief from price rise and reviving growth. Among the various measures, Jaitley announced a national multi-scale programme called Skill India for providing training to youth and their employment, a national irrigation scheme and a smart city with an investment of over $1 billion as part of the larger plan for 100 such projects. He also announced many other schemes, such as one to help farmers realize right prices for their produce, at least four more institutions modelled on the All India

Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), more money for people’s welfare, many new airports on public-private partnership mode, a target of total sanitation in five years, greater autonomy for banks and higher investments by staterun enterprises. OPPOSITION SLAM BUDGET Opposition parties on July 10 criticized the union budget, saying it did not reflect the aspirations of the common man. “The budget does not reflect the aspiration of the common man. Most of the announcements are ministry programmes, which the finance minister is announcing encroaching upon their domain,” Congress leader Veerappa Moily told IANS. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said it lacked direction. “There is no policy direction in the budget. There are no clear measures to improve revenue deficit,” Tharoor told IANS. Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar termed the budget disappointing. “The announcements made in the budget are only a bouquet of words. There are no real measures,” said Pawar.

ullet trains are set to become a reality in India with the first service between Mumbai and Ahmedabad as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government sought to make Indian Railways — one of the world’s largest — run like a “commercial enterprise but serve like a welfare organization”. In the railway budget presented to parliament Tuesday, Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda unveiled many new measures to make Indian Railways, which runs about 20,000 trains and ferries 23 million passengers daily, a modern, efficient and commercially viable utility. He presented proposals, subject to parliamentary approval, for introduction of 58 new trains, paperless office in five years, digital reservation charts, wi-fi in select stations and trains, wake-up call for passengers, separate freight terminals, office-on-wheels for business travelers, more money for cleanliness and safety, food courts at stations, expansion of rail tourism and better connectivity in hilly areas and northeastern states. He also promised a diamond quadrilateral project of high-speed rail connectivity between the four metros. He said some identified stations will be developed like modern airports. Having already hiked passenger fares by 14.2 percent and the freight carriage charges by 6.5 percent, which is expected to fetch additional resources of `80 billion, Gowda focused on ways to earn revenues from other sources, such as allowing foreign equity in areas excluding

He said `5000 billion will be required over the next 10 years to fund the modernization plans of the network, as against the actual spend of `184 billion in the past 10 years, but noted that freight and passenger fare hikes alone could not fetch such large requirements. But Gowda also made it clear that commercial viability cannot be sidestepped. “An organization of this magnitude vested with varied responsibilities, is expected to earn like a commercial enterprise but serve like a welfare organization. These two objectives are like the two rails of the railway track, which travel together but never meet,” he said in his hour-long speech. Prime Minister Modi was quick to react. “The railway budget keeps in mind the development of India. We can see the great use of technology also,” he tweeted, adding: “This budget strengthens institutional mechanism. It focuses on transparency and integrity,” Modi said.

Earlier this year, India has also extended visa on arrival (VoA) facility to 180 countries and barred eight countries from this service. These eight countries - Pakistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Somalia - are categorized as “sensitive countries”. This facility is available at international airports of Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bengalore, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

An industry expert told IANS that the move will be beneficial mainly for the life insurers and not for the non-life insurers. India opened up the insurance sector for private players in 2000, setting the cap on FDI at 26 percent.

sequence in horror film Pizza left actor Dipannita Sharma in excruciating pain. The movie required her to shoot some intense sequences, and for one such scene, she was hung from a wall and was secured with a harness for a long time. “It had led to a temporary muscle pull,” a source said. “Dipannita was manually taped to the wall and she had to stay on the wall for the entire shoot of the day as it was an ongoing action sequence and they couldn’t break vitality.” For the scene, Dipannita wore a pretty white gown and she could also feel the blast of the air conditioner.

‘Hate Story 2’ is much more than an erotic film: Jay Bhanushali

The film is produced outside but its heart is completely Indian, says Vinay, a co-star.

MUMBAI: The trailer of Bollywood film Hate Story 2 starring Surveen Chawla and Jay Bhanushali indicates that it is an erotic thriller. But lead actor Jay says the erotic scenes are restricted to just one song, and that there’s a lot more to the film than bold scenes. Hate Story 2, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, stars with Jay. “Frankly speaking, Hate Story 2 is not at all related to the first film. That was an erotic thriller, but this is a thriller. The bold scenes are only in one song and after the song, the whole film runs on a story,” Jai said in an interview. The sensual song Aaj phir tum pe pyaar seems to makeover Jay’s image and he’s happy about it. “Earlier people used to call me cute and mama’s boy but now they call me hot and sexy and all those taglines. Every girl is coming to me and complimenting me on Aaj phir tum pe pyaar,” he said.

Salman is keenly interested in bringing the cast of Dr. Cabbie to India for the release. “While Salman has convinced Izabelle Kaif (Katrina’s sister) who has a pivotal role in Dr. Cabbie, to be in India for the film’s Indian release, Adrianne was not so keen until her co-star Vinay convinced her that a trip to India would be just the stress-buster she needed,” said a source. “We do want to come with Dr Cabbie to India. The film is produced outside but its heart is completely Indian. It’s the story of a qualified Indian doctor who ends up as a taxi driver in Canada,” said Vinay.

Vidya steals the show in ‘Bobby Jasoos’

CHENNAI: After winning hearts with films such as Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Akaash Vani, actor Nushrat Bharucha, who is all set for the release of her Tamil debut Valeba Raja, directed by Sai Gokul Ramnath, she says. I always like to work with directors who want to work with her. “I don’t like running after directors for films. I happened to sign Valeba Raja because the director saw his character in me. When Gokul narrated the script, what I really liked is that he wanted someone like me for the character. He felt that I was part of his vision. I like to work with such directors who want to work with me,” Nushrat told IANS.

obby Jasoos, a detective comedy-drama by debutant director Samar Shaikh is a very special film. If the truth be told, and it’s the truth that our endearing Hyderabadi Nancy Drew is drawn to — there are two heroes in Bobby Jasoos. One, of course, is Vidya Balan. But the other more surprising hero is the city of Hyderabad. Bobby Jasoos is that colorful flow of vibrant drama and humo Another hero cinematographer Vishal captures the bustle, jostle, aromas and attitudes of Hyderabad with the same affection of a non-tourist as he did when he shoot Raanjhanaa and Issaq in Varanasi. kind of bouncy volatile energy that somehow eludes today’s cinema. With Vidya’s impeccable

coming timing, flawless dialogue delivery and eyes that don’t only speak volumes, they chant reams of poetry on the hurt and healing process of existence, Vidya just nails her goofy free-spirited character. This is her best performance till date. Yes, even better than Kahaani and The Dirty Picture. In the title role she sparkles, shines and shimmers providing us with more proof her versatility. Babby Jasoos also left us with one of the most heartwarming romances in recent times. Bobby brittle relationship with a television journalist Tssavur (Ali Fazal) grows in the plot with nurtured natural niftiness. Not for a minute does the relationship appear unre-

al or manipulated. This is the kind of romantic writing that cinema today sorely misses. And when was the last time we heard the Santoor playing in the background in a romantic sequence? Claps for Shantanu Moitra’s dreamy and fluent background music. Bobby in her salwar-kameez, sneakers and various super disguises, is a fearless, brazen bundle of bumbling energy. Like Vidya’s multiple disguises, the film’s ability to surprise never flags. If Bobby revels in a sense of adventure the narration doesn’t lag behind. You can find flaws here. But you won’t hold them against the film. That’s a guarantee!

Deepika voted the ‘sexiest woman in the world’ MUMBAI: Actor Deepika Padukone has been voted the sexiest woman in the world in a poll conducted by the FHM magazine. She will feature in the new edition of the magazine and the actor Wednesday unveiled the edition featuring her and the other girls in the top 100 list of sexiest women. However, Deepika believes that her physical appearance has got nothing to do with this poll and it is only her work that led her to this. “I think something like this is really the result of the work that I do. I don’t think it has got anything to do with me physically. I also think that the brand endorsements are also the result of the films that you do,” the actor said here. “I have been very fortunate that the roles I have done in the last 2-3 years have been very different from each other. So I guess this and the endorsements are a result of that and, of course, the success of that and the relatability of the characters,” she added. Deepika was last seen in the Tamil film Kochadaiiyaan Her look in her upcoming film Finding Fanny is also out. The film has been directed by Homi Adajania and also stars Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia.

CBI to probe Jiah Khan’s mystery death MUMBAI: Thirteen months after actor Jiah Khan was found dead in her Mumbai home, the Bombay High Court Thursday ordered the city police to hand the case over to the CBI. A division bench of Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice P.D. Kode ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe from a Special Investigation Team (SIT), on a plea filed by Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan last October. “The case is handed over to CBI for further investigations and to assess whether Jiah Khan committed suicide or was murdered,” the division bench said. Not satisfied with the probe, Rabia Khan had moved the high court, submitting reports by independent experts to support her contention that Jiah was murdered. The court also pulled up the CBI for its reluctance to take up the case investigation on grounds of shortage of manpower, as stated by CBI counsel. “It is not expected of CBI to come out with such an excuse, that they do not have enough officers to conduct a probe. In a country of one billion people, an agency like CBI should not take such a stance otherwise, where will the citizens go to seek justice,” said Kanade Police however again stated that Jiah had committed suicide and charged Sooraj for abetting it. Fearless in her quest for solving the truth behind her daughter’s death, Rabia mentioned several circumstances in her petition which indicated that Jiah could have been killed, and how police had allegedly refused the opinion of a private forensic expert she had provided.

Sunny to be showstopper for Apala by Sumit MUMBAI: Actor Sunny Leone is all set to walk the ramp for Sumit Sawhney’s jewellery brand Apala by Sumit at the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW). She will wear his latest collection —The Royal Tribe — and don the avatar of a tribal queen for it. The Jism 2 actor feels thrilled to be the showstopper for Apala by Sumit at IIJW. “For the first time, I am going to experiment with my look completely and turn into a royal tribal queen, which will be a ideal shift from my image. It’s going to make me feel inherently royal and rustic,” Sunny said in a statement. “I find the jewellery pieces so enticing that I would be the happiest person to aquire the collection,” she added. “Apala” means the “most beautiful” in Sanskrit and the collection with 22 carat gold layering incorporates the richness of the royalty and rugged styling of the tribals. Meanwhile, Sunny’s next with Ram Kapoor will target families for a change. In fact, it could well turn out to be her first film with a U rating, as Sunny will play a Bollywood actor in the film and Ram, a boisterous middle-aged Gujarati married man, who fantasizes about her.

Kissing is not a big deal: Shraddha Kapoor MUMBAI: Actor Shradhha Kapoor can’t make head or tail of the hue and cry over her kissing scene with actor Siddharth Malhotra in Ek Villain even though she is “conservative at heart”. “I wonder why the kiss is such a big deal in today’s day and age? Audiences don’t make a fuss about a kiss. By now, our audience is used to it,” Shraddha said. Kissing scenes for the actor are okay as long as she believes in her director’s vision. “If it’s used to market a film, I wouldn’t know why. I am no marketing expert. As for doing kissing scenes, I am quite conservative at heart. Performing intimate moments doesn’t come easily to me. I will do them only when necessary. “I won’t do a kiss to titillate the audience. I am a sucker for an authentic narrative. I must have faith in my director’s vision before doing such a shot. But it has to make sense to me. Otherwise I won’t do it,” added the Aashiqui 2 actor.

PeeCee’s success as a SRK, Sallu hug at singer inspires me: Alia Iftaar party again MUMBAI: For Alia Bhatt, actor Priyanka Chopra is an inspiration and she feels confident that even she can cut an international album one day. Priyanka turned singer in 2012 and has released three international singles since then. Her album is expected to be out soon. “I think the one person who has done our country and the industry proud is Priyanka Chopra. She has cut an international album. She is an inspiration for me to make me believe that I can also do something in that space,” the 21-yearold said in an interview. Besides acting, Alia has also taken to singing and has already sung two songs — Sooha Saha for Highway and now Main tainu samjhawan ki for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Alia Bhatt has proven that she is the girl with the midas touch in Bollywood.

20-YR JAIL FOR KNIFE ATTACK ON PROF BY A STAFF WRITER

U

RBANA (IL) — A 26-yearold man who slashed A.U. Dhammika Dharmapala’s throat while making an apparent reference to the victim’s race, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 16. Joshua Scaggs will have to serve at least 17 years for the attempted first-degree murder of 44-year-old Dharmapala, a University of Illinois law professor. Dharmapala, a US citizen of South Asian origin, was sitting in the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign waiting for a train to Chicago about 5.40 am on December 7, 2011, when Scaggs jumped from a nearby seat and lunged at him with a knife, shouting “This is my country. I will kill you.” Scaggs retreated for an instant before plunging the knife into Dharmapala’s neck. After being in a mental institution for more than two years to become fit to stand trial, Scaggs pleaded guilty in May to attempted first-degree murder in exchange for a promise from Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Ziegler that he would seek no more than 20 years in prison. a person he thought was from a different country and attacked that person in a way that his intent was to kill him,” Clem said. Scaggs cried as he sought forgiveness from Dharmapala. “I can’t say ‘I apologize’ enough to you, sir, for what I did to you and your family. I’m sorry for your emotional stress and pain

HESTERFIELD (MI) – The police have warned homeowners in west St. Louis County about thieves attempting to go into mailboxes during the day and stealing the mail. Dharmapala took 11 minutes to read aloud a three-page victim impact statement detailing for the judge the physical and emotional toll the attack has taken on him and his wife. He said he has had three surgeries, will need continued therapy for at least another five years, and no longer feels safe living in Champaign. “While any violent attack is traumatic, being targeted for killing because of the color of one’s skin in exceptionally horrific. This is an immutable characteristic and an attack of this nature gives rise to constant anxiety about the possibility of future attacks,” Dharmapala said. Because Scaggs does not have the means to pay, Ziegler did not seek restitution for Dharmapala’s out-of-pocket expenses, which Dharmapala put at more than $19,000. Dharmapala, an authority on tax policy, public economics, law and economics, and political economics, joined the Illinois faculty in 2009 from the University of Connecticut. Residents along Isle View Drive said they had noticed mailboxes on the block were open, but wondered how they could protect their mail? ILES (IL) -- A stolen golf cart that was reportedly discovered at the home of a Niles boy led the Park Ridge police to arrest 10 youths in connection with the crime. The cart was reported stolen on May 22 from the Park Ridge Youth Campus, 733 N. Prospect Ave., by employees of the Park Ridge Park District who were working on the site. Park Ridge Police Cmdr. Jason Leavitt said the employees observed someone riding the golf cart off the property and heading north on Prospect Avenue. Leavitt said investigators learned that several incidents of vandalism had occurred on the Youth Campus property as well, including building windows broken by rocks or tools, with graffiti and other damage estimated at $12,800. The police located the stolen golf cart the following day at the Niles home of a 12-year-old boy who was charged with theft, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass. “The investigation into that led to the other nine [suspects],” Leavitt said. Another 12-year-old Niles boy was charged with burglary, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass, while the police also leveled charges of criminal damage to property and criminal trespass against two other 12-year-olds from Niles and three Park Ridge boys, ages 12, 13 and 14. HICAGO (IL) -- Some travelers flying out of O’Hare International Airport may have to give themselves more time before their flights, starting next week when the People Mover train will stop serving the economy parking lots. Through October, the train will operate only among the four passenger terminals, city officials are alerting travelers. Drivers using the economy parking lots will need to ride shuttle buses between the lots and

the airline terminals, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. The People Mover will shut down from July 14 night and shuttle buses will operate between economy parking lots E and F and Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5, officials said. Beginning July 15 morning, and until November, the automated trains will operate only among Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5. The trains will not operate between Economy lot E and Terminal 5, which is the international terminal.

The service changes are needed to accommodate a bridge project for the Balmoral Drive extension of the People Mover into O’Hare. During the next 3 1/2 months, shuttle buses will run between the lot E station and terminals 1, 2 and 3, along with a separate shuttle from lot E directly to and from Terminal 5. He has a clear image of three things he’d like the college to build upon — recognition, reputation and rankings. “I want to build on the recognition of our brand, strengthen the college’s reputation and increase the rankings of all our programs,” he says. “And all points are for everyone to help with through engagement, execution and excellence.” Gupta first joined the university as the chair of the accounting and information systems department in July 2007. Prior to coming to MSU, Gupta held various positions at Arizona State University, such as first Henry and Horne Professorship in Accountancy and the Faculty Director of the Master of Accountancy and Information Systems and the Masters of Taxation programs. Roger Calantone, director of the institute for entrepreneurship and innovation in the college who has worked closely with Gupta, said Gupta’s work at Arizona State University, a university even larger than MSU, makes him a strong choice for the position of dean.

PRANA PRATHISTA FETE OF THE HINDU TEMPLE OF ST. LOUIS

S

BY A STAFF WRITER

T LOUIS-The Hindu Temple of St. Louis celebrated Prana Prathista Mahotsavam of Sri Ayyappa, Sri Kanyaka Pramesweri and Sri Veera Anjaneya (Sri Hanumanji) from June 6 to 8. Prana Pratishta literally means “establishing the life” within the sacred deity. Around 2,000 devotees from the states of Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan and California experienced the divine energy through various spiritually related programs – Pujas, Homams, Ratha Utsavams of Kanyaka Paramesweri, Anjaneya, and Ayyappa, recital of Sunder kanda, devotional lectures, Siva-Parvathi Kalyanam, Pathinettu Padi Pooja and finally, Irumudi submittal to Lord Ayyappa. In order to maintain the tradition of the Hindu festival, the devotees were served banthi bhojan with banana leaves. Sri Ayyappa Prana Prathista began on June 6 with the formal handover of the ritualistic authority to Brahmasri Tantry Divakaran Namboodri by the Hindu Temple management. After this, the Tantry performed Prasada Shudhi, the rituals to purify the Maha Sannidhanam. Sri Ayyappa idol was formally handed over by the shilpis and the Tantry performed Jaladhivasam with an objective to emphasize the importance of water in our Vedas. Lord Ayyappa was in Jaladhivasam (water bed) for the entire night. The Tantries conducted Vaastu homam, Rakshobha homam and Vaasthu kalasa pooja for forgiveness and peace. The Tantries also performed Tantric style poojas to wade off the evil forces away from the Maha Sannidhanam. On June 7, Sri Ayyappa was taken out of

the water. The Tantries prepared the Idol for the next day’s Prana Prathista. Each and every ritual was performed to incorporate energy into the idol and finally the idol was covered with sanctified white cloth and put in a bed for rest the whole night of Saturday. On June 8, the Tantries focused their energies on conducting poojas for the Peetam for consecrating Sri Ayyappa on the Peetam (holy seat). At that time, Kalasa and navarathna sponsors brought the holy water and navarthnas to the Maha Sannidhanam. The Tantry placed the yantra and navarathnas alcove under the Peetam along with other sacred ingredients as part of the ritual. In the meanwhile, with rituals and chenda melam around, the chief shilpi opened the eyes of Sri

Ayyappa. The grand finale of the Prana Prathista was Jeeva vahana, where the Chief Tantry with the assistance from the other Tantry and Temple priests consecrated Lord Ayyappa in the Peetam and secured the deity to its Abode using a paste of sacred ingredients. All happened in the midst of vadhiya gosha and sarana gosha of Geetha Mandalam group of Chicago and hundreds of devotees respectively that filled the air of the entire Temple. When the Tantri removed the white cloth, Nithya Brahmachari showered his blessings to all who were waiting this to happen in St. Louis for close to ten years. It was a moment of extreme vibration and the devotees were in full throttle to realize the presence of Lord

Ayyappa as if He came from Sabarimala to St. Louis to bless us. The divine energy was experienced by one and all. The Tantries did the alankarana of Lord Ayyappa with Maharaja ornaments and turban in the head (visiri madippu) in closed doors and opened the door for devotees for mangala arathi of Alankara priyan. When the Maha Sannidhanam door was opened, the entire Mahasannidhanam was filled with sarana gosha. Devotees witnessed the Shantha swaroopa Ayyappa in raja alankaram. The Tantris also consecrated Upadevatas of Sri Ayyappa Maha Sannidhanam – Sri Kannimoola Maha Ganapathy, Sri Nagaraja and Maligapurathu Manja Matha. On the evening of the Prana Prathista, The Tantry performed a special Padi Pooja to invoke the Padi as part of the Maha Sannidhanam which was witnessed by hundreds of devotees. It was a delightful experience to witness lamps on the holy steps that were already decorated with flowers. Kids sang “deva saranam” in synchronization of the Tantry’s pooja for every step. These 18 steps signify the spiritual path to self-realization. Sri Ayyappa Maha Sannidhanam is the second of its kind in the U.S with Sri Ayyappa in Shantha Swaroopa posture, the architecture of Sabarimala temple and the Sanctum Sanctorum resembiling Sabarimala. The Maha Sannidhanam also serves as a spiritual center for exhibiting Ayyappa avatars (forms) from five Ayyappa temples in India – Erumeli, Achankovil, Ariyankavu, Kulathupuzhai and Pandalam. The Prana Prathista Mahotsavama ended by a memorable, unique, once-in-a-lifetime ‘experience-the-divine-energy’ event in St. Louis, Missouri.

It’s Argentina vs Germany,

Devastated Brazilian fans in mourning the world over Germany and Argentina to revive memories of World Cup finals of late 80s and 90s as they face each other once again IANS, SAO PAULO

fter a goalless 120minute of play, Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-2 in a penalty shootout, thanks to impressive saves from keeper Sergio Romero, in the FIFA World Cup semi-final here on July 10. Argentina will face Germany in the final in Rio on July 13. The Germans thrashed hosts Brazil 71 in the other semifinal on July 9, leaving the Brazilian fans in tears worldwide. In the second semi-final, the 27-year-old Romero denied two penalty kicks from Dutch defender Ron Vlaar and playmaker Wesley Sneijder in the first and third round while his teammates converted all the four kicks to claim the victory after both teams were tied 0-0 at the end of extra time, reports Xinhua.

Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal did not repeat the successful goalkeeper substitution strategy in the quarterfinal penalty shootout win against Costa Rica, which saw reserve keeper Tim Krul come into the pitch in the last minute of extra time and block two kicks in the following penalty duel. Both sides played cautiously as Netherlands’ Arjen Robben and Argentina talisman Lionel Messi were both strangled with tight defense. After the break, the Dutch boss made the first substitution of the match, bringing in Daryl Janmaat to replace Indi. The change witnessed a bit of a reshuffle in the Dutch defending line as their starting left back Blind, who was under tremendous pressure in the first half, moved inside to replace Indi and veteran right back Dirk Kuyt

went to the left to make place for Janmaat. In the 75th minute, Argentina broke defense in the right flank and Perez slipped in a through pass to meet a dashing Gonzalo Higuain. In the last minute of the regular time, Robben burst into the area from middle but his close range left-foot effort was blocked by Javier Mascherano. Both team remained patient in extra time with Argentina’s substitute Rodrigo Palacio and Maxi Rodriguez each wasting a chance to score a winner. Palacio’s header inside the box was just too tame to threat a wellpositioned Cillessen in the 115th minute while two minutes later Messi chipped a ball to the far post but Rodriguez’s volley scuffed into the ground and was easily caught by the keeper.

the third session of the game. Opting to bat first, India made a good start scoring 106 runs in the first session. But England struck back in the second by picking two quick wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara (38) and Virat Kohli (1) to leave India at 107 for three. In the third and the final session, India lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane, who had worked hard for his 32, but Vijay and Dhoni took the visitors to a position of strength with their unfinished 81-run stand for the fifth wicket. It wasn’t the classiest of the knocks from Vijay but nonetheless valuable and came at the right time for India, who are keen on putting behind the 0-4 whitewash they suffered on their last tour in 2011. — IANS

7.2 feet tall Bhullar to be part of NBA WASHINGTON: Sim Bhullar has become the first player of Indian-origin ever to be part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bhullar, 21, a center from New Mexico State University, has signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings, a professional basketball team, The American Bazar reported. Bhullar, 7.2-foot tall, has parents hailing from Punjab. Although he may not end up playing for the Kings when the 2014-2015 season begins, he will be on the roster, and that marks an historic first for Indian-American athletes. He proved adept at playing in the paint, averaging 7.8 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, and 10.4 points per game in his two-year career in the New Mexico state. Those numbers may not jump off the page, but they are solid and point towards significant potential in the big leagues. “Guys

my size don’t have very long careers and you have to take advantage of it and do the best you can with the time you have to play,” Bhullar was quoted as saying in an interview with The Globe and Mail. “I didn’t want to get hurt in another college season and ruin my chances. And I’m not the kind of guy that’s doing it just to make money right away, I just want to play at the highest level,” he said.

If you are a shift worker, donating blood could be an easy option to reduce the risk of heart disease, says a new study

T

he high incidence of heart disease seen in shift workers could be due to the tiredness resulting from the disruption to the body’s biological clock as jetlag has a severe effect on red blood cells. These effects can be counterbalanced by fresh, young red blood cells — making blood donations a potential therapy for shift workers,

the findings showed. “Blood donations in humans also stimulate the generation of new fresh erythrocytes. Therefore, blood donations on a regular basis might be a very simple measure to help decrease the cardiovascular risk in human shift workers,” said Margit Egg from University of Innsbruck in Austria. The scientists worked on

zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model organism which, like humans, is active during the day. The fish were subjected to alternate short (seven hour) and long (21 hour) days, resembling shift patterns common in industry. It was found that “jet-lagged” animals showed higher numbers of aged red blood cells, which accumulated in the blood vessels.

Normally there is a balance between newly produced red blood cells and old ones which are removed from the blood.

“Normally there is a balance between newly produced red blood cells and old ones which are removed from the blood,” Egg noted. Old cells are less flexible and become stuck in the spleen and liver, where they are engulfed by white blood cells. Jetlag appears to disrupt this removal process.

releases oxytocin (bonding hormone) after orgasm that creates an atmosphere of emotional comfort. At the same time, levels of the stress hormone cortisol go down. The combined effect of these two hormonal changes provokes a state of mind that eases positive conversation, researchers noted. In the study, 253 individuals

aged between 18 and 45 and who had been in sexual relationships were analyzed. Researchers asked participants to log their experiences within two hours after sexual activity. They were questioned about the nature of the experience concerning alcohol consumption, intimacy, conversation and the activity itself.

Chemical switch may Orgasm opens protect against brain loss up partners NEW YORK: Scientists have stumbled upon a chemical “switch” in the brains of Alzheimer’s and stroke patients that prevents the generation and survival of neurons. The chemical switch, MEF2, may be a potential therapeutic target to protect against neuronal loss in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and autism, researchers said. “We have shown that when nitric oxide (NO) — a highly reactive free radical — reacts with MEF2, MEF2 can no longer bind to and activate the genes that drive neurogenesis and neuronal survival,” said Stuart Lipton, of SanfordBurnham Medical Research Institute. ou have got another reason to go for some action tonight. According to a promising study, orgasm not only reinforces intimate bonds between partners but also improves communication between them. “Post-sex communication is likely linked to sexual and relationship satisfaction. For this reason, pillow talk may play a pivotal role in maintaining intimacy,” said Amanda Denes, assistant professor at University of Connecticut. This happens because the body

Your week ahead... Aries You have a goal in mind big time. Be careful about trampling on others to get there — it’s bad for your karma! You’re more of an idea person rather than an action gogetter. Pen down those dreams and tune into those visions.

Taurus If you’ve been thinking about getting out of town, go ahead and firm up those plans. Those who know and love you best energize you, and vice versa. On weekend you just might be ready to dive into something new.

Gemini You’re likely to sense the dawning of a useful point of view. Consider the most outlandish options and seek out advice from an odd source. Your feelings will come across beautifully on weekend.

Cancer Working from home might not be a bad idea as your regular routine may present some irregular issues now. Be sure to direct negative feelings duly. Spread the good stuff around. On weekend, do what it takes to truly unwind.

Leo Somebody’s quirks may make you crazy. Try to loosen up or laugh it off. Your work or personal priorities require attention at the end. The most appealing possibilities may not yet satisfy you. This weekend, try something different.

Virgo Start with a little flirtation, a quick coffee whatever it takes to kick the week off right. You have the tenacity to apply yourself to a situation. Don’t overlook esoteric ideas. Watch your wallet this weekend.

(July 14 - 20) Libra If you find yourself dragging a bit, consider why you’re feeling this way. You’ll want to have your emotional state sorted out. Expect some romantic interlude. Find opportunities to cooperate and compete.

Scorpio You’re a people person and super aware of opportunities. A little maintenance of your relationships and vicinity now, prevents issues later. Leave mundane stuff behind. Think big, think bold, think beautiful — and think romance!

Sagittarius A penny saved is a penny you can spend on something bigger and better later. You have a bright, shiny quality that attracts others; your pure interest in them keeps ‘em around. You’re prone to lose most things, so be careful.

Capricorn Hop out of bed early, and make the most of the limitless possibilities the stars are sending your way. You’re busy refining a scheme or looking for an alternative approach to a certain situation. Balance work and play.

Aquarius If possible, delay bigger, better agenda items when the stars serve you some electric, inspiring stuff, and give you natural allure and extra shine. What do you want now? Go for it! Weekend looks great for self-discovery.

Pisces Why be a martyr when a friend or coworker’s happy to help? If you feel funny asking, arrange for a mutually useful trade. Fuse your imagination and your intellectual side for amazing results. On weekend, get to the root of an unclear situation.
