Trump meets his match in Carson
Trump and Carson are tied at 23 percent, according to the Monmouth University survey – first poll since July 26 to not show Trump ahead of other Republican candidates ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
F
inally neurosurgeon Ben Carson has caught up with the frontrunner Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump in Iowa, one of the first four nominating states in the party primary, according to a new poll. Trump and Carson are tied at 23 percent, according to the Monmouth University survey, making it the first time since July 26 that a poll in the first four states to select a Republican nominee did not find Trump substantially ahead of all other candidates. Farther behind Trump and Carson were former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, at 10 percent; Texas Senator Ted Cruz, at 9 percent; Wisconsin Governor Scott
BRIEFS: Court allows NSA to continue surveillance WASHINGTON: A US federal appeals court has overturned an earlier ruling by a lower court against the federal government’s controversial bulk collection of Americans’ phone data. The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the district of Columbia circuit said the previous ruling by the lower court in Washington, D.C., which declared that bulk metadata collection program of the National Security Agency (NSA) was unconstitutional, had no sufficient grounds, Xinhua reported. It means the massive metadata collection program, first disclosed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013, would continue till it expires in November.
Obama to rename tallest US peak WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is set to restore the name of the tallest North American mountain peak — Mount McKinley in Alaska — to the native Alaskan name of “Denali”. According to a statement issued by the White House on August 30, President Obama is scheduled to officially rename the mountain. Mount Denali, an Athabascan name used by generations of Alaskan natives, means "the great one". The White House statement said the renaming of the peak is aimed at improving relations with Native Americans. Denali carries cultural importance to many Alaska natives.

Walker, at 7 percent and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush at 5 percent. Louisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal polled
below one percent. The results are a stark contrast from Monmouth’s last Iowa poll, taken before the first Republican debate. In late July,
Walker led with 22 percent, Trump had 13 percent, Carson had 8 percent and Fiorina was at 3 percent. A CNN/ORC poll taken earlier this month found a similar top tier of candidates, but with a much stronger lead for Trump. In that poll, Trump was at 22 percent, Carson was at 14 percent, Walker was at 9 percent, Cruz was at 8 percent and Fiorina was at 7 percent. In Monmouth’s survey, when voters said they had strongly made up their mind on who they were voting for, Trump led Carson 30 percent to 22 percent. But those with only slight preferences backed Carson 25 percent to Trump’s 16 percent. Meanwhile, during a campaign stop at Storm Lake, Iowa, Jindal suggested Trump’s popularity is
Email saga: Fresh headache for Hillary IANS, WASHINGTON
H
illary Clinton may not be in legal trouble over the use of a private email server for official correspondence, but release of some 7,000 new emails with information redacted from 150 of them added to her political headaches. Information was redacted from the emails because it has now been deemed to require classification, the State Department said as it released the material to meet a federal court direction to release 25 percent of Clinton’s emails by end August. A State Department official said that the approximately 150 emails from Clinton’s four year tenure as Secretary of State that are being upgraded and subsequently classified are all at the “confidential” level — the

lowest level of classification. Newly classified emails include correspondence Clinton had with an aide about an Iran speech she delivered at American University in 2010, and another from the minister counselor for public affairs in Pakistan with the subject “Facebook
Freed in Pakistan,” according to NBC News. None are “Top Secret” as were two of the emails released last month, it said. In a 2010 note, Clinton asks colleague Philippe Reines if he can help her learn to use her new iPad, or “hPad,” as Reines dubbed it. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said: “We’ve always been very clear that nothing that we’ve seen so far was ever marked classified,”. Classification is “not often a black-and-white process,” he added. As part of its investigation, the FBI, according to Washington Post, has reached out to a Denver technology firm that Clinton hired to manage her server and to her attorney, who had kept a copy of her work e-mails on a thumb drive.
part of a “summer of silliness.” “We don’t need another talker in the White House,” said Jindal. “We need a doer, not a talker. So I think voters are going to focus on who can do this job.” “This is an important election. Not just who can give a great speech, but who can actually get the job done,” he said. Jindal said Trump and other candidates have tapped into frustrations that voters have with insiders in Washington. Current polls show that Jindal may not be among the ten Republicans on stage for CNN’s live televised debate in California on Sep 16. The seven Republican candidates, who don’t make the cut, will take part in a separate debate, on the same day.
Bobby Jindal warns of immigrant ‘invasion’ WASHINGTON: Republican presidential candidate Bobby Jindal, son of immigrant parents from India, says that immigrants who do not Bobby Jindal adopt American values represent an “invasion”. Pressed on what he meant by “adopt our values”, Jindal, currently polling an average of 1.8 percent votes, said that U.S. must avoid what has happened in some European countries. “You’ve got second-, third-generation immigrants that don’t consider themselves part of those [European] societies, those cultures. We shouldn’t be giving freedoms to people who want to undermine the freedom for other people,” he said.
Can America curb gun violence with a cue from India? ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
I
f only US had taken a leaf out of India’s book and imposed stricter guns laws, a tragedy like the killings of two Virginia journalists on live TV by a former disgruntled employee may have been avoided. For India, the country with the second highest number of guns in the world after the US, with 46 million guns for over 1.25 billion people, does not figure even among the top five countries with the most shootings, according to the Pew Research Centre. Whereas America which has an estimated 270 million to 310 million firearms in circulation or nearly
one for every one of its 319 million people, has seen 90 mass shootings between 1966 and 2012, according to a new study cited by CNN.
More restricted gun laws do make a difference, according to the study by Adam Lankford from University of Alabama.
While FBI, which defines a mass killing as four or more victims, has counted 172 cases of mass killings between 2006 and 2011, Mass Shooting Tracker website puts the number at 249 in 239 days since the beginning of this year alone. Each time an incident like that takes place, there is an angry reaction and calls for stricter gun control laws, but then nothing happens. It happened this time too with President Barack Obama lamenting Republican stance, “We’re willing to spend trillions of dollars to prevent terrorist activities, but we haven’t been willing, so far at least, to impose some common sense gun safety measures.”

India’s biggest murder mystery turns murkier Former media mogul Indrani Mukherjea charged with conspiring to kill her son Mikhail around the time she allegedly strangled and burnt her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012; more details emerge IANS, MUMBAI
A
court here has extended till September 5 the police custody of Indrani Mukherjea and two others accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012. And in a fresh development, police also charged Indrani with conspiring to kill her son Mikhail around the time she allegedly strangled and burnt her daughter with the help of her driver Shyamvar Rai and her ex-husband, Sanjeev Khanna. Indrani, wife of former media baron Peter Mukherjea, briefly fainted in the Bandra court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S.M. Chandgade as the public prosecutor argued that her custody and those of the other two be extended. Vidhie, Indrani’s other daughter from Khanna, broke down after seeing her mother in the court. Indrani is accused of killing Sheena in a moving car with the help of Khanna and Rai en route from Bandra here to a forested region of Raigad, some 95 from Mumbai, on April 24, 2012. Sheena’s body was later allegedly doused with petrol, set

on fire and buried in the area. Indrani, 47, as well as her former driver Rai, 43, and ex-husband Khanna, 50, were in the court room when the ruling came. All three were later driven to the lock-up in Khar police station where Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria and other officers reached to continue their interrogation. Police are expected to question them jointly and individually to
unravel the murder motive, the suspected involvement of others, a possible money angle, how the murder was planned on Skype, and other aspects. The public prosecutor said investigators suspect the involvement of some others outside Maharashtra in the murder and so Indrani, Rai and Khanna needed to be questioned further. Police also wanted to ascertain where the accused dumped the vic-
tim’s clothes, mobile phone and other belongings after the killing, the court was told. Khanna’s lawyer H. Mundergi argued that police were only awaiting the reports of the forensic tests, and there was no need to extend his police custody. Indrani’s lawyer Gunjan Mangla alleged that police were using pressure tactics to force a confession from her and that she was allegedly slapped while in custody.
Development must be the agenda in Bihar: Modi

BHAGALPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 1 said that development should be the main agenda in the Bihar assembly polls. “Development should be the main issue,” Modi told a huge rally here in Bhagalpur, about 200 km from Patna. Modi reminded people that he had announced a Rs.1.25 lakh crore special package for Bihar’s development last month. He said he had forced the alliance of the Janata Dal-United, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress to talk about development. “I am happy that development has become an issue for them also.” But Modi targeted the alliance leaders by saying they were silent at their Patna rally on Sunday on how to develop Bihar. “All of them only chanted Modi, Modi, nothing else, to target me.” The Bharatiya Janata Party leader urged the people to ask the “grand alliance” to provide a balance sheet of their 25 years of rule in Bihar. This was Modi’s fourth rally in the run up to the assembly polls.
Siddhartha Das - the latest piece in the Sheena puzzle Sheena’s email ‘fights’ being probed MUMBAI: Email exchanges of an aggressive nature between Sheena Bora and her mother Indrani Mukherjea are being probed by Mumbai police to ascertain the motive leading to the former’s killing, official sources said here. Sometime before Sheena’s gruesome murder on April 24, 2012, there were at least 20 heated email exchanges with her mother, prime

T
he Sheena Bora murder case, which has created a countrywide sensation, saw yet another intriguing development this week, as Siddhartha Das emerged claiming to be the biological father of the victim and having shared a live-in relationship with prime sus-
pect Indrani Mukherjea. A day after reports emerged that he was in hiding and may have fled to Bangladesh, Das came out in public adding to the array of twists and turns that have emerged since Indrani — wife of former media honcho Peter Mukherjea — was arrested by Mumbai police on August 25 for the murder of her
daughter Sheena. Now settled in Kolkata with a wife and a son, Das, with his face covered, called up media persons to a place far away from his residence in Dum Dum, to tell his side of the story. Calling Indrani an “ambitious woman” who “yearned for a high lifestyle”, Das described how he met the woman while she was studying in a college in Shillong in 1986 and went on to father their two children — Sheena and Mikhail — while liv-
accused Indrani. Investigators are hoping that these emails could provide clues to the motive leading to Sheena’s killing, allegedly by the trio comprising Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in connivance with Indrani’s driver Shyamvar Rai.
ing as live-in partners at her parents’ residence. “We did not marry. We had a livein relationship,” Das, with his face covered with a handkerchief and sporting a helmet, told media persons near the Eastern Metropolitan bypass on the city outskirts. “Sheena was born in 1987. Mikhail in 1988. Sometime later, Indrani dumped me,” said Das, asserting he was willing to undergo a DNA test to prove his paternity.
All these days, there were endless rumors about the identity of Sheena’s father, and the nature of his relationship with Indrani, who had for decades passed off the girl as her sister. Das’s claims may help investigators put in the right pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is the Sheena murder case. Charging Indrani with dumping him and his children, Das did not hesitate to indict her for the murder. “Indrani dreamt of having a nice home, a high lifestyle, so maybe money could be the reason. In today’s world, anybody can kill for money,” said Das, as he went on to add “if she has really committed it she deserves to be hanged”. As the volley of media queries kept on multiplying, Das sped off on his bike promising to hold a press conference in the evening at the city’s Press Club. A few hours later, Das emerged at the studio of a vernacular news channel as he patiently answered questions about his life and times with Indrani and their two children.

Modi’s Gujarat model P losing its sheen? Behind Patidars’ quest for safety in the reserved categories is the evident failure of the so-called ‘Gujarat model’ flaunted by Narendra Modi AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
N
othing shows more starkly the distortions that have vitiated the policy of reservations as the agitation by the financially and politically influential Patel community in Gujarat for inclusion in the backward-caste category to avail of the quota system in the allocation of government jobs and educational opportunities. Behind their quest for safety in the reserved categories is the evident failure of the much-vaunted ‘Gujarat model’ of development which was touted by Narendra Modi as the panacea for the entire country. Yet, since the preference for reservations is a throwback to the days of scarcity during the licencepermit-control raj, the latest upsurge shows that little has changed in the economy. The scourge of joblessness remains as potent under the pro-market dispensation as it was under the controlled economy. Even then, there is something odd about an enterprising community like the Patels wanting the government to act as their nanny, as it were. The OBC (Other Backward Class) of the Hindi belt, too, comprised dominant groups in the countryside when they secured 27 percent reservations for themselves in 1990. But unlike the Patels, they occupied a lowly position socially. As B.P. Mandal, a former chief minister of Bihar and author of the Mandal commission report recommending 27 percent reservation, said, he was not allowed as a school student to

eat with his upper caste companions by the Brahmin principal. Mandal was discriminated against although he belonged to a wealthy landowning family. But the Patels or Patidars — the word means the same as zamindars — never experienced such social disadvantages. Not surprisingly, they were part of the anti-reservation movements in Gujarat in the late 1970s and early 1980s directed against the Congress-led state government’s KHAM vote bank com-

prising Kshatriyas, Harijans, Adivasis and Muslims. It is strange, therefore, that the Patels of the Patel-motel fame - they run a large number of roadside hotels across the US - should now want to take a step back into the backward caste category. Such a regressive outlook is all the more curious because the Patels, like most Gujaratis, are known for their entrepreneurship. For them to seek reservations in government establishments cannot be easily explained when the country has opted for a pro-market economy. This kind of a backward march is the result of dwindling employment opportunities at a time when the private sector is not expanding fast enough to make up for the reduction of government jobs. Besides, the Gujarat model may be more hype than reality.
IANS, NEW DELHI
atel community leader Hardik Patel has announced his intention to join hands with other communities to launch a nationwide movement for reservation in education and jobs, while criticizing the current government policy. He asserted he will continue to fight for the poor people in his Patel/Patidar community. “We are demanding reservation for the 95 percent poor people belonging to the Patel community. So the entire community should demand it, isn’t it? Only five percent of Patidar community is prosperous, not the entire community,” the Patidar Arakshan Andolan Samiti convener told media persons after arriving in New Delhi from Gujarat. “In my community, 95 percent people are poor. About 10,000 farmers belonging to our community committed suicide in the last decade. I am fighting for them. If other communities come forward, I’ll support them as well... I am talking to everyone,” he said. Patel claimed that because of the current reservation policy, “the country has gone back 60 years. If you want to give reservation then give it to all... Reservation should be given to meritorious students and candidates, who deserve reservation but don’t get it. “The day a proper blueprint of reservation policy is drafted, that day, many can become a part of the country’s development. If this done, then (India) will turn into a superpower ahead of China.” Patel came here on the invitation of Gujjar and Kurmi communities, which had organized a meeting at the Gujjar Bhavan in Kotla village. “I had come to Delhi on the invitation of Gujjar and Kurmi communities in Delhi. They are our brothers and had arranged a sabha here. Very soon the movement will gain ground in the capital. It is marathon struggle and will go on for 1-2 years... They will support us and when need be will block the National Highway,”
he said. On the issue of getting any political support, Patel said: “I don’t have support from any political party or politician. There is no politician or political party involved in our struggle...neither do I want to become a politician.. I have the support of 7 million people in Gujarat and need to mobilize 27 crore Patels across the
Patidars in Madhya Pradesh stage rallies BHOPAL: Three rallies were taken out in Madhya Pradesh in support of Hardik Patel of Gujarat who has been championing the cause of Patel community for bringing it into the other backward classes (OBC) category. The rallies were staged in Bhopal, Sihor and Rajgadh districts with participants riding motorbikes and cars. They later participated in a meet to demand the state’s Patidar community, a part of Patel community, be brought into the OBC category. The demonstrators raised slogans against BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government’s policies and submitted a memorandum for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
country. This is a struggle to secure reservation for Patel community under OBC quota.” “If it is like (late Shiv Sena chief) Bal Thackeray’s style... what is wrong in it? I also like (Delhi Chief Minister) Arvind Kejriwal’s principles, (Narendra) Modi ji’s style of wearing kurtas and his policies on national security. But I won’t take help from anyone, the entire country will help me,” he added. On future plans, he said: “Very soon a ‘maharally’ will be organized in Lucknow. We will also call the Patels from across the country at Jantar Mantar here. We’ll continue to fight for our rights till we achieve success. We will launch our struggle in 12 states initially.”

DENTAL IMPLANTS
THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO DENTISTRY AND A REASON TO SMILE AGAIN.
If you are missing any of your teeth, you have some big decisions to make and important questions that need to be answered: What are various ways to replace missing teeth? Why are dental implants considered the gold standard of tooth replacement? What can happen to your health when you live without teeth for a prolonged period? Starting with Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark's serpenditous discovery of osscointegration (implants fusing to bone) dental implants have revolutionized dentistry. Today in our offices we can regenerate patients* form, function and esthetics. We are truly changing lives to the highest level with the miracle of dental implants. Here are some facts and trends to consider. More thank 20 million people in the US are missing all of their natural teeth. More than 100 million peole are missing from 11-15 teeth. Maintaining good, healthy teeth is certainly a worthy goal but keeping teeth for a lifetime is not always possible, despite the impressive achievement of preventative dentistry and the best efforts of our patients. Trauma, systernic disease, dental decay, periodontal disease, poor genetics, dental phobia, and normal wear and tear are just few of the reasons for tooth loss. Almost 80 percent of consumers with missing teeth are now aware of dental implants and realize the advantage of a permanent solution that mimics nature in function and fit and looks even better than nature may have originally provided. It is now possible to treat virtually every odentulous patient with aesthetic and functionally fixed no dentures solutions. We work with patients missing as few as one tooth or as many as all of their teeth In our office Dr. Atcha focases on giving his patients options with either a few implants or a full fixed restorations as a cost-effective way to treat patients with failing or missing teeth. With the revolutionary All On-4 TM dental implants Dr Atcha uses 4 specially placed implants per jaw to secure dental implants teeth without bone grafting even when failing teeth have to be removed. The All-On-FourTM dental implant technique is a clinically proven solution for those who have lost or are about to lose all of their upper and/or lower teeth. With this procedure, you can come as close to having a new set of permanent teeth as is currently possible. Those who replace their dentures with All-On-FourTM dental implants will never have to remove their replacement teeth again for cleaning because their new teeth can be cleaned and maintained just like a natural set of teeth. US COP PUT ON TRIAL

The trial of a former Alabama police officer who slammed down an Indian grandfather walking in his son’s neighborhood in February begins in the US Arun Kumar, Washington
T
he trial of a former Alabama police officer who slammed down an Indian grandfather walking in his son’s neighborships in February has begun with the first day spent in selection of the jury this week. Eric Parker, 26, is accused of using excessive force against an unarmed Sureshbhai Patel and charged with violating his civil rights. Patel, 57, arrived for court early, steadying himself on a walker as he slowly moved down the sidewalk outside the federal courthouse in Huntsville before the trial began Tuesday, according to local Al.com. “He’s reached the max, in my opinion,” said Chirag Patel of his father’s recovery. He said his father has regained some independence. “He is able to get around and take care of himself.”
Chirag Patel, an engineer in Madison, said his father (seen in the photo) has lost the ability to grip with his left hand. (File photo)
But Chirag Patel, an engineer in Madison, said his father has lost the ability to grip with his left hand and has learned to move around by dragging his left leg. On February 6, on a cold Friday morning in a quiet suburban lane in Madison, Parker and a trainee
responded to a non-emergency call about a “skinny black guy” walking around near the homes. Parker and the trainee stopped and detained Patel, who was taking a morning walk in front of his son’s home. Patel spoke no English and had arrived days earlier from India
to help care for his new grandson. Dash cam footage shows Parker and another policeman approach Patel. Parker, while holding the older man’s arms behind his back, is seen slamming Patel face-first into the ground and falling on top of him. He required emergency surgery to repair damage to his spine and remains partially paralysed. Parker, who was subsequently fired by the Madison Police Department, faces up to 10 years in prison on the federal charge if convicted. He also faces a misdemeanor assault charge in Limestone County, but that case has been put on hold pending the outcome of the federal trial. Prosecutors for the federal government and the defence attorney for police officer Eric Parker spent all of Tuesday instructing, organising and questioning 55 potential jurors. In the end, only four were dismissed, including one man who had difficulty hearing.
NY shooting case: Indianorigin man pleads not guilty IANS, NEW YORK
A
fter giving authorities the slip for nearly 16 years, an Indian-origin man accused of killing a person outside a New York wedding in 1999 has finally been arrested in Trinidad, media reported. Balkumar Singh, 37, from Guyana apologized to the people as he was led into a court on Long Island in New York on August 31, India West news portal reported. He, however, pleaded not guilty to murder, assault, weapons and
other charges and was ordered to be held without bail. “I am sorry for the pain I caused the family,” Singh was quoted as saying. According to the prosecutors, Singh got into an argument while attending the wedding in Hicksville, New York. He fired numerous times outside the wedding hall, killing 19-year-old Abzal Khan. Singh was featured on popular US television series “America’s Most Wanted” in 2009. Acting district attorney Madeline Singas said Singh used numerous aliases while on the run and

might have spent time in Canada and Guyana. According to the district attorney, he was arrested in Trinidad in March this year after
authorities were tipped off to his whereabouts. He apparently was homeless and living on the streets, the report added.
Aaron Chatterji
NEW YORK: An Indian American professor from Duke University is set to be presented with the “2015 SMS Emerging Scholar Award” from Illinois-based Strategic Management Society (SMS). Aaron Chatterji will be honoured at the 2016 SMS annual international conference and will receive $5,000 as prize money. He will also present his research at the conference, India West news portal reported. The prize is awarded to a relatively young or new scholar who displays exemplary scholarship that promises to have an impact on future strategic management practice. Chatterji served as a senior economist with the White House Council of Economic Advisers where he worked on a wide range of policies relating to entrepreneurship, innovation, infrastructure and economic growth. He has authored several columns in The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, has appeared on TV and radio and was recently profiled in The Financial Times and Fortune. Chatterji is a term member of the US Council on Foreign Relations and previously worked as a financial analyst at global investment firm Goldman Sachs.
Indian-origin babysitter to serve 14 years for toddler’s death IANS, NEW YORK
A
29-year-old Indian-American baby sitter will serve 14 years in prison in the US after she was found guilty of the death of a toddler in her care. Kinjal Patel pleaded under the Alford doctrine, in which a defendant does not admit guilt but concedes that there is enough evidence for conviction at trial, New Haven Register reported. Patel was found guilty by court for the death of Athiyan Sivakumar, who was 19-months-old when he died at Yale-New Haven Hospital on January 19, 2014. Sivakumar sustained fatal injuries while he was under Patel’s

care. Medical examiners involved in the case ruled that the child’s death is a homicide and the cause of his death was blunt force trau-
ma. Patel’s attorney Kevin Smith asserted that the boy’s death was an accident. “There was zero intent on her part to harm this child,”
Smith was quoted as saying. “This was a horrible, tragic accident, probably due to her lack of experience with small children and not knowing how to handle these types of situations,” she added. “The physical evidence (if the case had come to trial) would not show a plan or thought on her part. It was just split second reactions with unintended but tragic consequences,” Smith said. According to the police warrant, the toddler gave Patel a hard time about eating rice and spat water on her face. A furious Patel picked up the boy and slammed his feet onto the kitchen floor three times and shook his head back and forth. She later pushed the boy in the face
and he fell backward, hitting his head, the warrant added. The prosecutor did not comment and said she will talk in detail about the case during the sentencing hearing scheduled for October 29. Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford will impose a 20 year sentence, to be suspended after Patel serves 14 years, and she will also serve five years probation, the report in the daily said. Smith argued that since Patel is not a US citizen she must be deported to India after she completes her sentence. The boy’s parents also face charges in the case. They allegedly lied to detectives about the incident in which their boy was injured, the report said.

Obama-Jindal face off The Obama administration is challenging Louisiana’s Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal’s efforts to stop Planned Parenthood program

T
he Obama administration is challenging Louisiana’s IndianAmerican Governor Bobby Jindal’s attempt to terminate Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, a non-profit providing reproductive health and maternal and child health services, from the state’s Medicaid program. Republican presidential contender Jindal’s effort to terminate Planned Parenthood was launched following the release of a series of undercover videos by abortion opponents that have raised questions about clinic operations. Most of the others in the crowded field of 17 Republican presidential contenders have also vowed to stop federal funding for the program if elected. In a brief filed in a Louisiana federal court, Justice Department lawyers said the state had not provided appropriate “justification” to strip the provider from the federal-

ly-subsidized Medicaid program, USA Today reported. The action is ahead of a scheduled hearing where Planned Parenthood is moving to block Jindal’s
effort. The hearing was set in Baton Rouge before US District Judge John deGravelles, who was nominated to the federal bench by Pres-
ident Barack Obama. He was confirmed in January. “States do not have unfettered discretion to determine that a provider is not qualified for purposes of federal Medicaid law,” according to the brief as cited by USA Today. “To conclude otherwise would not only strip the Medicaid Act’s free choice provider of all meaning, but also would contravene clear congressional intent to give Medicaid beneficiaries the right to receive covered services from any qualified and willing provider.” “President Obama is so committed to protecting Planned Parenthood’s baby harvesting operation that he sent his lawyers from the Department of Justice all the way to Baton Rouge to sue me and try to stop us from canceling these contracts,” Jindal said in a statement issued by his campaign. “President Obama won’t watch the videos but he’ll take time to file a lawsuit. Well, I’ve got news for him. We are not backing down.”
Do more to tackle terror: US to Pak WASHINGTON: Asking Islamabad to do more to confront terror groups based in Pakistan, the US says the issue will be on the agenda when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif comes to Washington next month. During her recent visit to Islamabad, US National Security Adviser Susan Rice invited Sharif to visit the White House in late October, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters this week in a meeting. “And we certainly are looking forward to that visit. There are obviously a lot of important issues to discuss,” he said. “We have indicated on a number of occasions that there is more work we believe that the Pakistani government can do to confront extremist groups and others that pose a security threat to the interest of the Pakistani people as well as the national security interests of the US,” Earnest said. “And that certainly was part of the discussion that Ambassador Rice had with the Pakistani officials, and I’m confident that will be on the agenda when Sharif visits the US later this fall,” he pointed out.

he graffiti “Death to America” will remain on the walls of former US embassy here, Iran’s Basij Student Organisation announced this week, reported semi-official Fars news agency. “Basij Student Organization announces this to the Iranian people that the slogan of Death to America will ever decorate the walls of this place (former US embassy),” an announcement by the public relations of the organization said. The announcement came following the recent news that the graffiti “Death to America 2015” and “Death To America 1394 (Iranian calendar)” were painted over the walls of former embassy.
Although five painted patches on the eastern blank wall of the former US embassy in Tehran confirms the erasure of graffiti posted by some radical anti-US elements, the eye-catching and bold slogans against the US still remain on the southern wall on Taleghani street. “Death to the US” at the entrance of the main gate of the former US embassy, which has turned now into a museum and a cultural complex, is dramatically noticeable by every passerby. “Not only the Iranian people but all the Muslims and the world people are entitled to shout ‘Death to America’ due to the oppressive policies of the US,” the announcement by Iran’s Basij Student Organisation also read.
oogle revealed its new logo, which keeps the red, blue, yellow and green colors of the tech giant’s original logo but changes the lettering to a simpler, rounded “Product Sans” font. Until now, the firm has used a serif typeface for its logo for more than 16 years. The tech firm said on its blog that it has changed a lot over its 17 year history and today it is changing again, slightly revising the logo’s shades of colour, along with the typeface, reported Efe. It includes a YouTube video that gives a quick review of the company’s evolution, from its first steps as a search engine through the creation of Gmail, the Chrome browser and high-definition Google Earth maps of virtually anywhere on the planet.
The new Google logo (below).
“This is not the first time we have changed our look and it probably would not be the last, but we think today’s update is a great reflection of all the ways Google works for you across Search, Maps, Gmail, Chrome and many others,” the firm said in its blog. “We think we have taken the best of Google (simple, uncluttered, colourful, friendly), and recast it not just for the Google of
today, but for the Google of the future,” the company said. Despite its meteoric rise, which has enabled it to rack up annual sales exceeding $60 billion, the company says that there is still a lot to be done and that what it has accomplished so far is just “the tip of the iceberg.” The logo redesign comes just two weeks after the firm based in Mountain View, California, announced the creation of a new conglomerate, Alphabet, which will include Google and six other companies. The company has been funnelling huge amounts of money into many diverse projects across the board with little or no connection to its main business of online search and advertising, Efe reported. As a result, it is now preparing to place everything under the Alphabet umbrella.

Andhra stops land acquisition
The state government has decided not to go for land acquisition for construction of the new state capital and instead continue with the land pooling system by persuading farmers ‘Don’t commit suicide over special status’
IANS, HYDERABAD
T
he Andhra Pradesh government has decided not to go for land acquisition for construction of the new state capital and instead continue with the land pooling system by persuading farmers. With the opposition parties up in arms against the land acquisition, and ruling party TDP’s ally Jana Sena led by Pawan Kalyan also expressing solidarity with farmers, the government decided not to go ahead with the land acquisition. Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, who is supervising the process of land acquisition for the capital, told reporters in Vijayawada that forcible acquisition was never the intention of the government. Stating that people voluntarily came forward to give 33,000 acres of land under the land pooling system, he said the remaining 1,900
acres would be acquired under the same system. He was confident that the entire process will be completed by Monday. Narayana remarked that they will resort to acquisition of land only if it became inevitable. He clarified that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was never
Jaya still popular choice for CM post: Survey CHENNAI: An opinion survey by students of Loyola College here released on Saturday predicted the AIADMK would retain power with J.Jayalalithaa turning out to be the popular choice as the chief minister again. Following her are DMK’s M.K.Stalin and M.Karunanidhi, DMDK’s Vijaykant and PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss. Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu are slated for 2016. The survey was conducted among 3,370 people in 28 districts spread over 80 assembly constituencies between Aug 13-26, Loyola College People Studies director S.Rajanayagam told reporters here. As many as 31.56 percent of those who surveyed prefer Jayalalithaa over others for the chief minister’s post while Stalin was preferred by 27.98 percent. However, 21.33 percent of those surveyed favored former chief minister and DMK president M.Karunanidhi while Vijaykant and Ramadoss were preferred by 6.24 percent and 2.27 percent of the survey sample. Out of those who were surveyed, 34.1 percent said they would vote for AIADMK while 32.6 percent preferred DMK, showing a marginal difference between the two major parties. Further 12.8 percent of those surveyed declined to reveal to whom they would vote while 3.2 percent said they would choose “none of the above” option.
The DMDK was preferred by four percent and PMK three percent. Reacting to the survey, PMK founder S.Ramadoss said the results are laughable. The survey seems to create an opinion in favor of DMK and more particularly for Stalin, he said in a statement. Normally only one choice per party would be given for the best chief ministerial candidate whereas two choices were given for DMK, Ramadoss said, adding the survey has several contradictions. He said 31.56 percent of those surveyed had preferred Jayalalithaa for the chief minister post while 34.1 percent said they would vote for AIADMK. Meanwhile, the total percentage of who prefer Stalin and Karunanidhi for the chief minister post comes to 49.31 percent whereas those who prefer DMK to come to power are only 32.6 percent.
in favor of land acquisition. Taking the blame on himself, the minister said it was he who announced land acquisition. “I did this only with a view to ensure that the process of building the state capital begin as early as possible,” he said.
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has appealed to people not to be driven by emotion and commit Chandrababu suicide over the Naidu issue of special status to the state. He said that his government was making all efforts to get justice to the state. The Andhra assembly on August 31 passed a condolence resolution mourning those who committed suicide over the delay in the award of special status to the state. Moving the resolution, Naidu said some people were getting emotionally disturbed. He appealed to the people not to resort to the extreme step. The Speaker announced the passing of the resolution.
The minister assured farmers that injustice will not be done to them, and appealed to them to cooperate with the government in constructing the best capital city. The land pooling began on January 2 and within two months, land owners came forward to give 33,000 acres. Under the land pooling scheme, land owners are offered benefits such as a share of the developed land rather than a simple monetary compensation. The government last week issued a notification to acquire agricultural land in 10 villages in Guntur district, triggering protests by some farmers. Pawan Kalyan had also visited some villages on August 23 and demanded the government to immediately withdraw the land acquisition notification. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naidu on Friday asked officials to be on alert.

India end drought against Sri Lanka
Wins series against Sri Lanka after 22 years; Virat Kohli’s first series triumph as captain of the Test team IANS, COLOMBO
I
ndia claimed an away Test series win against Sri Lanka after 22 years as they clinched the decisive third match by 117 runs for a 2-1 triumph on the fifth day at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground here. This week, in pursuit of 386 runs for victory on the final day, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 268 in their second innings despite strong resistance from captain Angelo Mathews (110) and Kusal Perera (70). Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up figures of 4-
69 and was ably supported by pacer Ishant Sharma (3-32). The win marked India’s first away Test series victory since 2011 when they defeated the West Indies. It was also Virat Kohli’s first series triumph as captain of the Test team. And it was the third time that India have won a Test series after losing the first match. Ashwin took 21 wickets to be declared the Man-of-the-Series. Ishant also became only the fourth Indian pacer after stalwarts Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan to bag 200 Test wickets. Cheteshwar Pujara was declared
the Man-of-the-Match for his unbeaten 145 that propelled India to 312 in the first innings. Resuming the day at 67/3, the islanders were put under relentless pressure from the very beginning, especially with Ishant bowling his heart out. At the other end, Umesh Yadav reaped the reward as he got right-hander Kaushal Silva caught while trying to pull a bouncer. He only succeeded to hand it to Pujara at short mid-wicket. At the post-lunch session, the partnership between Mathews and Perera flourished, igniting hopes of a possible draw for the hosts.

Sri Lanka were in attacking mode as Perera latched onto any loose ball that came his way. Perera went after leg-spinner Amit Mishra, hitting him to the boundary twice in an over. All-rounder Stuart Binny also
suffered considerable punishment. The tourists finally broke the 135-run partnership as a rush of blood prompted Perera to reversesweep Ashwin but the miscued shot found Rohit Sharma at point.

China claimed a historic silver medal in 38.01 seconds and Canada won the bronze medal in 38.13 seconds. The United States foursome of Trayvon Bromell, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Mike Rodgers finished second behind Jamaica, but they were stripped of their place because the third and final baton exchange was out of the zone.

Gatlin looked like he might gain the advantage but then Bolt extended his strides to pull away from Gatlin towards the finish.

N
ational Award-winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil’s film “31st October”, starring Soha Ali Khan and Vir Das, was screened at the Sikh International Film Festival Toronto (SIFFT) as part of its three-day celebration of Sikh stories and storytellers. “31st October”, a film based on the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the events that followed, was screened on Saturday at the Rose Theatre, Brampton,” read the festival’s official site sikhfoundationcanada.com. The movie is said to be a true life story of a Sikh family in 1984. “We begin the film with Indira Gandhi’s assassination and we show how a family survives. People have died, become drug addicts, and we have a widows’ colony. The impact of 1984 has been disastrous and permanent. “By making this film, I am not inviting controversy or stirring a debate, but I want people to realize that such acts should not be repeated,” said the film’s producer Harry Sachdeva. Soha also took to micro-blogging site Twitter to share the response of the film at the special screening. “Receiving so much love from people out in Toronto, glad to hear that you all loved the film. @SIFFToronto @31stOctFilm, Soha, who had earlier shared that the makers of “31st October” are looking forward to release the film on the same date in India, tweeted on Sunday. The three-day festival will conclude on Sunday.
Gurinder’s film big success in Jodhpur NEW DELHI: Popular British filmmaker of Sikh origin Gurinder Chadha’s “Viceroy’s House”, which reportedly chronicles the Gurinder Chadha last months of Lord Mountbatten and his wife Edwina’s stay in India before British rule ended, has gone on the floors for eight weeks in Jodhpur. The project marks the first time collaboration of Indian media conglomerate Reliance Entertainment with Britain’s Pathé. Chadha of “Bend It Like Beckham” fame, along with Berges and Moira Buffini, has done screenplay.
Big B’s Twitter account hacked, complains against ‘abusive sms’ MUMBAI: Cinematic icon Amitabh Bachchan approached the police this week to solve a mystery over “dirty abusive sms” that he had been receiving for a year when his Twitter account was hacked. “OKAAY...!! Plot thickens! Had been getting several really dirty abusive sms for a year... just handed all of them to the POLICE,” the 72-year-old tweeted. The actor is an active user of social media and keeps in touch with scores of his fans worldwide. Earlier in the day, he shared that his Twitter account had been hacked. “WHOA !..My Twitter handle hacked! Sex sites planted as ‘following’! Whoever did this, try someone else, buddy, I don’t need this,” the thespian tweeted. Big B has over 16 million follow-
ers, including celebrities like Dilip Kumar, Hema Malini and Shah Rukh Khan on Twitter. The “Paa” actor regularly uses the platform to stay connected to his fans, whom he fondly calls his “extended family” to share news about his personal and professional life.
Expect new cast in second season of ‘24’, says Anil
NEW DELHI: Anil Kapoor, who starred in and produced “24”, the Indian adaptation of the eponymous show, is geared for its second season, and says viewers will be treated to some new cast members. Anil, who has starred in a season of the American “24”, brought a ‘desi’ version of the show to Indian
TV screens with the same title via Colors in 2013. It was a refreshing change not just in terms of the concept and production values, but also had an impressive line-up of actors like Shabana Azmi, Tisca Chopra and Mandira Bedi. Now a second season will soon be in place. “We will have a new star cast, a lot of new people are going to be there,” Anil, who himself essayed Anti-Terrorist Unit chief Jai Singh Rathore in the show, told IANS here. Asked if the trend of adapting foreign TV shows for the Indian small screen can be equated to the idea of ‘playing safe’, the 58-year-old shared: “There is nothing wrong with adaptations. It is, after all, a business. You can get a good story from anywhere, so why not?
‘Phantom’: Snappy avenger’s tale for action film freaks Film: “Phantom”, Language: Hindi; Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub; Director: Kabir Khan; Rating: ***
P
hantom’ is aimed at stirring the patriotic fervor in every Indian making them feel good, as the death of innocents in the 26/11 carnage in Mumbai is avenged. Loosely based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s book, “Mumbai Avengers”, the film is a fictionalised version of how the masterminds of the terrorist attack are eliminated, albeit unofficially. Disgraced after the attack and
humiliated with the terror operation, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), a primary foreign intelligence agency of India, opts for “an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth” approach to beat the
opponents at their own game. Roy (Sabyasachi Chakrabarty), the head of RAW and his team search for the perfect candidate for this secret mission. They zero down to Daniyal
Khan (Saif Ali Khan) an ex-Army officer who has been court martialled and dismissed from the armed services on grounds of abandoning his battalion at a crucial time. As he lives a life of anonymity in the remote wastelands of the Himalayas, they feel he is the perfect foil for their mission. They cajole Daniyal to accept the assignment. Seething under his ignominy and longing to get back his lost honor, Daniyal agrees. He is then introduced to Nawaz Mistry (Katrina Kaif), an agent working with Darkwater, a security consulting firm that works closely with RAW. “Phantom” can be a treat for lovers of action films, but for the rest, it will appear like a cheap contrived fiction drama.

AMC’s martial arts series to air soon
BY A STAFF WRITER EVERLY HILLS, CA -- AMC’s new martial arts drama series ‘Into the Badlands’ starring Asian American actors Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero) and Aramis Knight (The Dark Knight Rises) will premiere on November 15. In a land controlled by feudal barons, ‘Into the Badlands’ tells the story of a ruthless, well-trained warrior named Sunny (Wu) and a young boy named M.K. (Knight) who embark on a spiritual journey across a dangerous land. Loosely based on the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West”, the genrebending, six-part martial arts series was created by writers/showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar (Shanghai Noon, “Smallville”). They will serve as executive producers along with Wu and fellow Hong Kong film star/director Stephen Fung. “The series is an exciting moment for us in that martial arts is not only a new genre for an AMC series, but also one that has been largely absent from television for 15 years,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming for AMC and SundanceTV. “The team behind ‘Into The Badlands’ comprises some of the best martial artists and martial arts filmmakers in the world, and they have crafted a show that overdelivers against two big goals we set for the show: to create a compelling character drama, and to introduce the highest calibre of martial arts filmmaking to a

FBI to fire Indian agent for killing unarmed man
Navin Kalicharan
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- In a rare case, the FBI is planning to fire an Indian American agent for intentionally shooting a suspect after finding that the officer violated bureau policy when he wounded the unarmed man in a 2012 incident. The agent, Navin Kalicharan, was off duty and fired at the man from a second-story window, hitting him in the back in July 2012. The man claimed that he was running away when the agent shot him, but a government investigation concluded otherwise. Still, the bureau deemed the decision to fire a “bad shoot,” in agents’ parlance. A media report said it was “extraordinarily rare” for the FBI to deem improper an intentional shooting by one of its agents. The bureau faulted the agent for violating its lethal force policy about six months after the report said the FBI had found to be justified at least 150 consecutive shooting episodes dating at least to 1993. The disclosure of the disciplinary action against Kalicharan, who is fighting the dismissal, comes at a time of heightened national scrutiny of shootings by law enforcement officials. Under the FBI’s lethal force policy, agents may fire their weapons only if there is an imminent risk of death or serious bodily injury. A 12-member shooting incident review group that examined Kalicharan’s case said there was insufficient evidence to believe that a man “involved in a minor property crime out on the street” posed any immediate danger to people indoors and upstairs.

BY A STAFF WRITER VONDALE, AZ -- An Arizona man was indicted on September 3 for helping a New York City college student obtain ISIS training in Syria. Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal, also known as Jammie Gammal, 42, of Avondale, Arizona, was arrested on August 31. Court records charge that El Gammal began communicating through social media with the 24-year-old sophomore in August 2014. The pair eventually met in Manhattan in October 2014 to make plans for the student’s travel to the Middle East. The student traveled to Turkey in January 2015, and received training from ISIS in Syria between February and May 2015. “This is another example of how social media is utilized for nefarious and criminal purposes around the world,” said Diego G. Rodriguez, assistant director of the FBI’s New York Field Office. El Gammal appeared in federal court in Arizona earlier this week. The case has since been assigned to US District Court Judge Edgardo Ramos of the Southern District of New York.

Kavina & Kaya Amin
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Talented young singers from across America will follow in the footsteps of music legends when they take center-stage in front of a packed stadium at the 2015 US Open. A dozen vocalists, all aged 14 and under, will perform patriotic songs prior to the night sessions of this year’s tournament. The line-up features talent from throughout the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area, as well as from Michigan, Florida and Georgia. Earlier this summer, the performers were selected via a nationwide online audition, through which a record number of more than 300 hopefuls auditioned. Performances were then reviewed by a panel of judges from the music and entertainment industries.

These children will join the group of music industry leaders who have performed at the event, ranging from Rob Thomas and Aretha Franklin to Diana Ross and Earth, Wind & Fire. This year’s Opening Night Ceremony will feature special musical performances from Josh Groban and Vanessa Williams. For the first time in 2015, the audition age was extended to children 14 years of age or younger. Previously, the casting call was only open to those 12 and under. Performing at his second consecutive US Open will be Christian Bautista of Jersey City, N.J. The remaining 11 performers will be making their Arthur Ashe Stadium debuts in front of anticipated capacity crowds. Additional highlights include twins Kavina and Kaya Amin, from Roslyn Heights, N.Y., who will be performing together during the second week of the tournament, and local Queens resident Madison Zamor, who will sing “America the Beautiful,” on September 2, in honor of 100 years of tennis being played in Queens. NY’s restaurateur in soup for loan scam
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- An Indian American businessman has been implicated in a money-moving scandal in which Town of Oyster Bay officials in New York helped him secure loans by arranging with lenders to have the town pay in event of any defaults, potentially exposing taxpayers to millions of dollars in liabilities. Records indicate Harendra Singh, a restaurateur who holds several lucrative contracts with the Town of Oyster Bay, secured a $1.5-million line of credit in 2010, due to a guarantee from the town that it would pay the lender in the event that Singh defaulted within a time period just short of five years. Singh secured two more loans totaling $14 million in 2011 and 2012, and emails obtained by Newsday show that Deputy Town Attorney Frederick Mei negotiated directly with lenders to structure those loans with a township-backed guarantee similar to the first. “The way it was structured is that the town became a guarantor, so that if Singh was to default, the town was a guarantor and the bank would be able to go after them as well,”

said Singh’s lawyer, Joseph Conways. Municipalities are not legally permitted to guarantee private debt, as is stated in New York’s state constitution. In fact, emails obtained by Newsday show that outside attorneys explicitly warned town
officials that their plans to guarantee Singh’s debt were illegal and in violation of the state constitution. Another potential issue for Oyster Bay is that the Singh loans do not appear to have been disclosed in the town’s audited financial statements or bond prospectuses. The glaring omissions could expose the town to sanctions from the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Town of Oyster Bay’s bizarre complicity in aiding Singh’s pursuit of funding came just months after Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano first took office in January 2010, following a narrow victory over incumbent Thomas Suozzi. Newsday had previously reported that Singh, a long-time friend of Mangano, arranged and paid for vacation trips for Mangano and his family, as well as separate trips for Mei. One financial expert reviewed the town’s documents and told Newsday Oyster Bay officials “could be in very serious trouble with the SEC, and it wouldn’t surprise me that it would spark a federal investigation.”
BY A STAFF WRITER EW HAVEN, CT -- A Connecticut baby-sitter charged in the death of a 19-month-old boy has been found guilty of first-degree manslaughter. Kinjal Patel (29) entered a plea under the Alford Doctrine which means she does not agree with the state’s case, but concedes there is enough evidence to secure her conviction. She will serve 14 years in prison. The police say Patel told detectives she was baby-sitting the child on January 16, 2014, Patel told police after the toddler would not eat rice and spat in her face, she became angry, she picked him up and slammed his feet onto the kitchen floor three times, then shook his head back and forth, according to the court documents. The boy died days later. His death was ruled a homicide caused by blunt force. Patel’s lawyer says his client didn’t intend to harm the child. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 29. Patel is not a U.S. citizen and federal immigration officials will likely deport her to India upon her release, her lawyer said.

ingle mothers are far more likely to live in poverty than single fathers and their condition deteriorates with each additional child they have, new research has found. The income of single fathers, on the other hand, remains the same or increases with each added child in their family, the findings showed. “Single mothers earn about twothirds of what single fathers earn,” said Karen Kramer, assistant professor of family studies at University of Illinois in Chicago, US. The single most important factor that allows single-parent families to get out of poverty is working fulltime, she said. “Single fathers are more likely to become single parents as the result of a divorce; single mothers are more likely never to have been married,” Kramer added. “Divorced single parents tend to be better off financially and are more educated than their nevermarried counterparts,” she
explained. The most common living arrangement for children after a divorce is for mothers to have custody. Single fathers with custody are more likely to have a cohabiting partner than single mothers, and that partner is probably at least sharing household tasks. Single mothers are more likely to be doing everything on their own,” she said. She also noted that sadly society still stigmatizes single mothers. “People think: How did you get in this position? It is irresponsible to be a single mother with so many kids,” Kramer said.
In Jaipur, gorge on pyaz ki kachori IANS, JAIPUR
T
hink of this Rajasthani capital, think of food, and it’s a dead heat between dal bati churma for a meal and pyaz ki kachori or (onion kachori) — a spicy round flattened ball made of refined flour and filled with onions, garlic and potatoes. Soaring onion prices — it sells for around Rs.70 a kilo against Rs.30 a month ago — have had nary an impact and the savory is flying off the shelves as quickly as it comes out of the frying pan. Arguably, there is no better place to gorge on these hot onion filled kachoris than at the Rawat Misthan Bhandar in the walled city. The outlet claims to have
“invented” these kachoris many years ago and they have become so famous that any visit to Jaipur is incomplete without Rawat’s kachoris. Each kachori, is the size of a quarterplate costs Rs.25 and goes well with tea, coffee or sweet lassi. Considered a favorite teatime snack, the Rawat kachori is eaten at just about any time of the day. “Three things which are an integral part of the kachori onion, garlic and red chilli - are grown in our farm near Jodhpur. The groundnut oil we use to fry these kachoris is brought from Gujarat in tankers, “ Bhudev Deora, managing director of the Rawat Group, told IANS.

Antibiotics may cause diabetes Researchers have found that people taking antibiotics regularly were more likely to develop risk of Type 2 diabetes, and those taking more than normal dose were at a higher risk all the more tofte Hospital in Hellerup, Denmark. “Although we cannot infer causality from this study, the findings raise the possibility that antibiotics could raise the risk of Type-2 diabetes,” Mikkelsen noted. Another equally compelling explanation may be that people develop Type-2 diabetes over the course of years and face a greater risk of infection during that time, he pointed out. For the study, the researchers tracked antibiotic prescriptions for 170,504 people who had Type-2 diabetes and for 1.3 million people who did not have diabetes. People who used more antibi-

requent use of antibiotics might increase your risk of developing Type-2 diabetes, a new study warns. Danish researchers have found that people who developed Type-2 diabetes tended to take more antibiotics in the years leading up to the diagnosis than people who did not have the condition. “In our research, we found people who have Type-2 diabetes used significantly more antibiotics up to 15 years prior to diagnosis compared to healthy controls,” said one of the study authors Kristian Hallundbæk Mikkelsen from Gen-
otics were more likely to be diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. A person develops diabetes, which is characterized by high blood sugar levels, when the individual cannot produce enough of the hormone insulin or insulin does not work properly to clear sugar from the bloodstream. Past research has shown that antibiotic treatments can alter the bacteria in a person’s gut and that certain gut bacteria may add to the impaired ability to metabolize sugar seen in diabetic people. This explains why higher use of antibiotic use are linked with Type-2 diabetes, but further research is needed, Mikkelsen said.
Knee replacement may TV viewing may trigger lung condition be bad for your heart IANS, LONDON
W
atching an average of five or more hours of television per day can block one of the key pulmonary arteries in your lungs, leading to a fatal lung condition called pulmonary embolism, researchers have said. Prolonged television watchers have a higher risk of fatal pulmonary embolism, a condition associated with long-haul flights, found the 18-year long study in more than 86,000 people. “The association between prolonged sitting and pulmonary embolism was first reported among
NEW YORK: Knee or hip joint replacement surgery, known as arthroplasty, may put people at increased risk of heart attack immediately following the operation, warns a new study. However, the research indicates that long-term risk of heart attack does not persist, while the risk of blood clot in veins and lungs may remain for years after the procedure. “Our findings provide the first general population-based evidence that osteoarthritis patients who have total knee or total hip replacement surgery are at increased risk of heart attack in the immediate postoperative period,” said lead study author Yuqing Zhang, professor at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, US. Osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis, and as the joint cartilage and bone deteriorates, knee or hip replacement surgery may be the only option to reduce pain and stiffness. Previous studies estimate that 1.8
million arthroplasty procedures are performed each year worldwide, and that number may increase as the population ages. The present study included 13,849 patients who underwent total knee replacement surgery and 13,849 matched controls who did not have surgery. Patients were 50 years of age or older and diagnosed with knee or hip osteoarthritis between January 2000 and December 2012. Findings stated that 306 patients in the arthroplasty group and 286 in the non-surgical group had heart attack during the follow-up period. Risk of heart attack was more during the first post-operative month in those who had knee replacement surgery than those in the non-surgical group. “The risk of heart attack was insignificant, but risk of blood clots in the lung remained for years after surgery to replace a hip or knee damaged by osteoarthritis,” Zhang pointed out.
air raid shelter users in London during World War II,” said Toru Shirakawa, public health research fellow at Osaka University in Japan. A long-haul flight in an economy class seat is a well known cause of pulmonary embolism that is called “economy class syndrome”.
In the study, the length of television watching was divided into three groups: less than 2.5 hours, 2.5 to 4.9 hours and five or more hours per day. During the follow-up period, there were 59 deaths from pulmonary embolism. The researchers found that people whose average television viewing time was more than five hours per day had twice the risk of fatal pulmonary embolism as those who watched less than two and a half hours daily. “We found that long TV viewing can cause death from pulmonary embolism,” Shirakawa said.
Women prone to anxiety than men IANS, LONDON
W
omen living in poor areas in Britain are almost twice as likely to develop clinical anxiety as women in richer areas, finds a new study to assess the impact of socio-economic factors on mental health. However, whether men lived in poorer or richer areas made no difference to their levels of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). “Women living in poor neighbourhoods were at an almost two times higher risk of developing GAD than those living in less deprived neighbourhoods,” said lead researcher Olivia Remes from Cambridge University. “This link between deprivation and mental illness, however, does not appear to exist in men. This is intriguing,” she added. Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental health conditions in modern society.
The study, of over 20,000 men and women in Norfolk, also found that men who perceive themselves to be in poor health are over five times more likely to develop anxiety than men who perceive their health to be good. However, women who believe they are in poor health are only three times more likely to develop GAD.
In general anxiety decreased significantly with age, in both men and women. “Our study also showed that people with poor self-perceived health were at a much higher risk for developing GAD. It is unclear yet why the link between self-perceived health and GAD should exist,” Remes said.
