Hopping from one venue to another before returning to the national capital, the prime minister announced `80 billion to build four major road projects in Jammu and Kashmir. The statement added that he had fever, “transient hypotension” (low blood pressure) and his condition was “slightly worse than yesterday (August 12)”. Apex court gets four new judges NEW DELHI: Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Justice R. Banumathi, Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant and senior advocate Uday Umesh Lalit on August 13 became the judges of the Supreme Court. They were administered the oath of the office by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha. With the four new judges, the existing strength of the apex court judges has gone up from 26 to 30. The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges. Before his elevation, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre was the chief justice of Gauhati High Court.

New gas price by end-September NEW DELHI: The government on August 13 said it will come out with a new natural gas pricing formula by end-September that would take into account the interests of investors and the public. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the Rajya Sabha that the NDA government had decided to review the gas pricing formula keeping in mind pub-

lic interest and the recommendations of the concerned Standing Committee of parliament. The new formula will be announced by September 30, the minister said replying to questions in the upper house. The existing gas price under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) was approved in 2007 and was to remain valid up to March 2014. Supreme Court now has 30 judges

The law minister also moved an amendment to change the number of the constitution amendment bill from 121st to 99th, which was passed by the house. While the judicial appointments commission bill was passed by a voice vote, the constitution amendment bill was passed after a division, with 376 members voted in its favor. It is necessary for a constitution amendment bill to pass by a twothirds majority. The bills will now have to be passed by the Rajya Sabha before they are sent to the president for his assent, after which they become acts. The two bills seek to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges and set up a commission for this. The bills propose that the Chief Justice of India will head six-member National Judicial Appointments Commission, other members of which would be the law minister, two senior Supreme Court judges and two eminent people. A collegium comprising the prime minister, the chief justice of India and the leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha will select the two eminent people. One eminent person will be nominated from among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, minorities or women.

Will Priyanka say yes to politics?

Priyanka Gandhi’s supporters turn to her when it seems clear that neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor vice president Rahul Gandhi is the answer to the organization’s travails AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

here is little doubt that by declining to join “active” politics, Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra will not only cause huge disappointment to her growing body of supporters in the Congress, but may also undermine the party’s chances of revival. To her followers, she represents the last and perhaps only hope of the party’s recovery following its demoralizing defeat in the AprilMay general elections. Accustomed to looking only at the Nehru-Gandhi family to lead them, Priyanka’s supporters evidently turned to her when it seemed abundantly clear that neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor vice president Rahul Gandhi was the answer to the organization’s travails. While Sonia Gandhi has been largely spared any direct criticism, except from writers of books on current affairs, Rahul Gandhi has been the target of considerable carping, ranging from being called a “joker” to being surrounded by rootless wonders with little understanding of Indian politics. However, there was a suggestion that both mother and son should take a two-year sabbatical, an unusual observation in a party which has acquired the reputation of being run like a feudal household with its retinue of servile courtiers. This was also the closest any party member had ever come to saying that Sonia Gandhi was not the answer to the party’s problems and that the organization could perhaps be better off if she kept out of the way for some time along with her darling son.

In this depressing context, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra aroused the most expectations. The reasons have long been obvious. Between the three — mother, son and daughter — Priyanka has been seen as the most naturally endowed with leadership qualities in being articulate and, most importantly, without any hangups in the matter of reaching out to the peo-

The haste may have been occasioned by the announcement by a relatively unknown Congress spokesperson that all three members of the dynasty will be in the leadership. There have also been reports that Priyanka may be made general secretary in charge of the party in Uttar Pradesh. These statements probably reflected the wishful thinking of Priyanka’s supporters rather than any decision taken by the party. But, arguably, the Congress president did not want the speculations to spread any further. There are several reasons for putting a lid on the rumors. One is that Rahul’s image will suffer if there is a clamor for Priyanka to play a major role. As the former Congressman, Natwar Singh, has said in his autobiography, Rahul does not have “fire in the belly”. Another reason why all the gossip had to be scotched is the close personal relations between brother and sister. Priyanka evidently realized that if she is pushed to the forefront by a section of the party men, a rift cannot but appear between the siblings which will be highly distressing for everyone in the family.

LONDON: Three British Royal Air Force (RAF) surveillance aircraft landed at an air base in Cyprus on August 12 to carry out aid drops to Iraqi Yazidi refugees on a mountain top. RAF Tornado jets landed at Cyprus’s Akrotiri air force base after dusk. A statement issued by British Prime Minister’s office said the Tornados could use their excellent surveillance capacity to gather better situational awareness to help with humanitarian efforts.

WASHINGTON: At least 130 additional U.S. military advisers have arrived in Iraq to help with the humanitarian aid in northern Iraq, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said. Hagel announced in California that the new detachment arrived on August 12 in Erbil. The troops were there to “take a closer look and give a more in-depth assessment of where we can continue to help the Iraqis”, Hagel said. They were not there for combat, he added.

Ebola: No panic among Indians in WA ACCRA: There is no panic movement out of West Africa by Indian nationals living in the region following the spread of the Ebola virus disease, officials of the Indian missions in Nigeria and Ghana have confirmed to IANS. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that a total of 1,848 cases have been reported with 1013 deaths in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone between August 7 and 9. So far, Guinea has recorded 506 cases with 373 deaths, Liberia 599 cases with 373 deaths, Nigeria 13 cases with two deaths and Sierra Leone 730 cases with 315 deaths. “There have been a few calls from people who were anxious about the disease, whilst others have expressed the desire to leave Nigeria, but there has not been any urgent need to move out,” Sharad Srivastava, first secretary in the Indian High Commission in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, said. The mission in Abuja is also accredited to Benin, Cameroun and Chad. “Nobody is packing out and we do not have any information from other countries - that we are accredited to showing that there is any panic among the Indian community,” T.J. Suresh, information counsellor of the Indian high commission in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, said.

Letter found in Osama’s hideout warns of IS brutality IANS, LONDON

letter found at slain Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan warned of the rise of a new Islamic extremist group capable of extreme brutality that could damage Al Qaeda’s reputation, media reported on August 12. The 21-page letter, written by one of Bin Laden’s senior officials in 2011, claimed the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), has complete disregard for civilian life, the Daily Mail reported. According to the letter, the IS’s barbaric acts include the use of chlorine gas as chemical weapon, bombing mosques, crucifixions and beheadings. The letter said that the IS was simply too extreme even for the group that killed thousands in the 9/11 attacks. Today, the IS has become a powerful force that has control of areas in Iraq and Syria larger than Great Britain. Its trademark black jihadi flag has fluttered in the background of “promotional” videos of executions, including crucifixions and beheadings.

The ‘caliphate’ the Islamic state has claimed to have established, represents the biggest shift in the political geography of the Middle East since the borders of modern Iraq and Syria were drawn under the Sykes-Picot agreement between Britain and France in 1916. The IS was founded by 43-yearold Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, a cleric held prisoner for four years by American troops in Iraq. The leader, a Sunni Muslim who despises the Shia-run Iraqi government, now commands more than 10,000 fighters, many of whom are former Saddam Hussein-era soldiers or disenchanted Sunnis who lost power and influence after the fall of the dictator’s regime. The group is estimated to have amassed a staggering £1.2 billion. It has even sold 8,000-year-old antiquities it has seized.

Sharif refuses to come under pressure ISLAMABAD: In a televised address to the nation on August 12, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rejected demands for his resignation and reiterated that his government will complete five-year constitutional term. Sharif’s remarks came at a time when opposition leader Imran Khan was demanding his resignation as he claimed that last year’s elections were rigged, Xinhua reported. The announcement came just one day ahead of the protests planned by Imran Khan and influential cleric Tahirul Qadri. The Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) had won the parliamentary elections in May last year. Khan has planned an anti-government march Aug 14 in Islamabad. He said his supporters will not end protests unless Sharif resigns. KABUL: At least eight militants were killed and 11 others injured in a military operation in eastern Afghanistan, authorities said on August 12. “Afghan security forces conducted a night operation and battled the militants in Chak district in eastern Afghan province of Wardak killing eight militants, including five Pakistani militants,” Xinhua quoted a provincial government statement as saying. The foreign militants came from the Maidan Shar province, 35 km west of Kabul, the statement said. Three Afghan Taliban local leaders named Mullah Hahad, Mullah Hamdullah and Mullah Muhib were among the dead.

NEW DELHI: The Indian and Sri Lankan Coast Guards have agreed to work for the speedy release of fishermen arrested for violating the maritime boundary, the government said. Defense Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha that the directors general of the Coast Guards of the two countries met in New Delhi June 25. The major issues discussed included training and cooperation on maritime search and rescue, maritime pollution response, conduct of joint maritime exercises and speedy release of arrested fishermen. Sri Lanka frequently arrests Indian fishermen who stray into its waters.

The beginning of the month will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking off to Japan for the annual bilateral meeting, during which the civil nuclear talks will be very much on the table. The prime minister heads to the U.S. at the end of the month for his summit meeting with President Barack Obama. Before he embarks for the U.S., India will have two important foreign guests — Chinese President Xi Jinping in the middle of the month and before that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott. In between these, President Mukherjee travels to Vietnam, taking forward the Modi government's policy of connecting with the immediate and extended neighborhood. Ahead of the presi-

They are also not supposed to wear colored clothes or ornaments. “My idea is how to change thoughts, behavior and attitude of people of this country towards widows of India who are their mothers, sisters...,” said Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International. xactly 157 years after they were pushed into a well by the British rulers, the remains of 282 martyrs from the first war of independence in 1857 which were dug up from a well in Punjab’s Ajnala town this year were paid their last respects on August 1. The remains were dug up from the “Kalian wala khu” (well of the blacks), now referred to as the “shaheedan wala khu” (well of the martyrs), at Ajnala near Amritsar. The victims, mostly Indian soldiers in the British Army who had rebelled, were mercilessly pushed

into the well and killed after being covered with soil by British troops. An all-faith prayer service was held to pay tributes to the martyrs at Ajnala town. Scores of people attended the event. These included historians, eminent locals and members of the Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj. “Tributes were paid to the martyrs whose remains were recovered from the well,” said historian Surendra Kochhar, who was actively engaged with the digging process in February this year. Following three days of digging, the volunteers recovered 90 skulls, 170 jaws, over 5,000 teeth and hundreds of bones.

Scores of volunteers, including men, women, children and even the elderly, were engaged in digging the well, located inside the premises of Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj at Ajnala. Other things recovered included coins of the British times, gold items and medals. The gurdwara had come up at the site as a tribute to the martyrs. The martyrs were troops comprising Indians from the 26th Bengal Native Infantry posted at Mian Mir cantonment near Lahore who revolted against the British and were marching towards Ajnala after hearing reports of the mutiny in Meerut and other places in 1857.

Menon and his team of researchers compiled the voluminous dossier, which follows Unesco’s stringent submission guidelines, in three years. It is substantiated with doublespread photographs and the necessary documentation and maps. The two specific areas listed in it are: Shahjahanabad in old Delhi, which has Mughal-era her-

he inauguration of this traditional stone mandir marks the completion of the second phase of the Swaminarayan Akshardham complex that is currently planned for the site. The mandir is 133 feet long and 87 feet wide, comprising 98 pillars and two domes (ghummats) 30 feet wide and 34 feet high. The entire mandir has been covered by a permanent structure to increase the structure’s life and accommodate darshan and worship during the region’s harsh winter. The Mandir is made entirely of Italian marble and was completed in three years at a cost of $18 million. This was made possible by the dedication and selfless service of professional volunteers, including engineers and architects, who helped to minimize the cost of the mandir. “Thousands of volunteers have dedicated themselves and sacrificed immensely to help create this lasting legacy. It is through the selfless service of hundreds of professional volunteers—engineers, architects, and project managers—that this Mandir has come up so swiftly and at a relatively low cost”, said Dipal Patel, a BAPS volunteer. Devotees and well-wishers from across the world gathered on the Mandir’s campus to celebrate its opening. While children frolicked on the grass holding their parents’ hands, women in their bright saris held their breath as they saw the Mandir for the first time even as elderly devotees raised their heads and bent their backs in awe to appreciate this traditional house of worship that would encourage a fresh undertaking of religious rituals and beliefs in the community. Also in attendance during the celebration were United States Senator from New Jersey, Cory Booker and US Representative from Maryland Steny Hoyer, US Representative from Pennsylvania Mike Fitzpatrick, US Representative from New Jersey Frank Pallone, Attorney General of the State of New Jersey, John Jay Hoffman and Indian Consul General Dnyaneshwar Mulay (New

York). Speaking on the occasion, Hoyer said, “This Mandir will surely not only be a place of worship, but a place of service. The saying, ‘in the joy of others, lies our own’ is translated here from words into action. As followers of this movement have done throughout the world for the benefit of millions and millions of people.”

Indeed, I give reverence to an extraordinary structure (the Mandir) which will stand in all of North America as one of the greatest places of faith we have but I am more impressed with the people of this community.” Rinali Patel, 27, of Cherry Hill, NJ called the Mandir a home. “The Mandir has traditionally been viewed as a home for God. I think it is also a home for the devotees, for the community. You can come to the Mandir and breathe a sigh of relief, experience peace, and feel relaxed. Spirituality becomes a tangible thing here.” She had been waiting for this day for years. The inauguration festivities, spanning over two weekends, included a yagna or Vedic ritual for world peace, an evening of cultural programs performed by children, Mahila Sammelan (women’s cultural program) and the murti pratishta rituals or ceremonies to invoke the spirit of the deity’s into the murtis or sacred images. Prior to the consecration ritual that took place on August 10, after which the murtis were to reside permanently in their shrines, they were taken on a festive procession around the complex. Young and old lined up on the side of the road, some dancing in excitement, some singing, and others watching the murtis and procession. These events infused a sense of jubilance into the devotionallycharged atmosphere. As the culminating event of these celebrations, the Mandir was officially inaugurated in a Vedic ceremony performed by BAPS Swamis in the presence of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj. HICAGO (IL) – Emirates, a global connector of people, places and economies, has commenced a daily nonstop passenger service to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. A joint VIP delegation from the US and Dubai was aboard the inaugural flight on August 5 as well as a contingent of international media. The flight carried passengers from more than 20 different countries to Chicago, demonstrating how Emirates connects people across the globe. “The Chicago route extends our passenger network to America’s third-largest city and complements our existing dedicated freighter service that operates to O’Hare,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates executive vice-president and chief operations officer. “The launch of this route will enable us to offer Emirates’ unique product and awardwinning service to passengers flying to and from the Midwest to our home in Dubai or onwards to more than 140 global destinations including the Far East, Africa and India.”

The new service will operate as flight EK235, departing from Dubai International Airport at 9:45 a.m. and arriving at O’Hare at 3:25 p.m. The return flight, EK236, will depart O’Hare at 8:35 p.m. and arrive in Dubai at 7:10 p.m. the next day. The route will be served by the US-built Boeing 777-200LR aircraft powered by GE90 engines. Emirates began passenger service to the US in 2004 with service to New York. The airline has steadily added more US routes over the past decade. Chicago is the ninth US gateway to join the Emirates network, following the launch of Boston service in March. In the past decade, Emirates has flown more than 9 million people to and from the US and carries the most passengers between the US and Middle East. Chicago is home to 2.7 million residents. Nyanteng, 33, was taken into custody at about 6 am when detectives executed a search warrant at his Leslie Street home, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Nyanteng has been charged with perjury, false swearing and conspiracy. Bail has been set at $30,000 with a 10 per cent option, and he is expected to make his first court appearance later this week. The arrest was made by detectives with the prosecutor’s office, the US Department of Homeland Security and its division of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A naturalized American who was born in Ghana, Nyanteng has been working for the last three years in the Newark office of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an agency within the Homeland Security department, prosecutors said. As an ‘immigration services assistant’ Nyanteng performed administrative support duties, said USCIS spokeswoman Anita Moore, and added that he had been placed on administrative leave. At the time of his arrest, Nyanteng was in line for a promotion. Before working for Homeland Security, Nyanteng worked for the US Department of Defense. Prosecutors allege that Nyanteng submitted fraudulent documents and knowingly made false statements to immigration authorities in order to bring another person into the US from Ghana.

EW YO R K - - A n In d i a n American couple in Queens, New York faces 31 years in prison for brutally torturing their 12-year-old daughter by violently beating her, locking her in her room without food and water for months on end, and making her take cold showers as her father beat her, often with a baseball bat. Queens, New York District Attorney (DA) Richard Brown announced on August 5 that Rajesh Ranot and his second wife Sheetal Ranot were arrested last week and charged with multiple counts of child endangerment and assaulting their daughter Maya repeatedly for more than two years. They are currently being held on a combined total bail of $85,000. The case came to the attention of law enforcement in May when Maya had to be hospitalized after her mother hit her with a broken metal broom handle that severed the young girl’s wrist to the bone. The girl was found by emergency medical technicians lying in a pool of blood.

After receiving surgical treatment, Maya was turned over to New York City’s Administration of Child Services (ACS), who placed her with relatives. According to a statement released by the DA’s office, Sheetal repeatedly hit her stepdaughter, causing bruising and pain. In one instance, She allegedly kicked Maya in the face while wearing footwear, causing bruising, swelling and substantial pain near her eye and face. While in ACS custody, the young girl began opening up to her relatives to tell them about the torture she had received at the hands of her parents, said Kevin Ryan, a spokesperson for the Queens District Attorney’s office. Based on the girl’s heartrending story, the police arrested the Ranots on July 29. Step-mother Sheetal was arraigned on August 1 and charged with first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault and child endangerment. She faces a 32-year prison sentence if convicted on all charges. Rajesh, a short-tempered taxi driver, was

also arraigned on August 1 and charged with second- and third-degree assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. The father faces an unfathomably light sentence of seven years if convicted on all charges. Ryan explained that Sheetal Ranot was facing a harsher sentence because she severed her daughter’s wrist to the bone with a broken metal broom handle. Had EMTs not arrived in time, the child might have died of her injuries that day. The Ranots are due back in court Aug. 13. They have received an order of protection which bars them from seeing Maya. Four other siblings live in the Ranot household in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens. Ryan said all had been taken into ACS custody and placed in foster care, which could include a relative’s home. Announcing the case, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said: “This young victim was subjected to years of unspeakable physical abuse at the hands of her father and stepmother.

E W Y O R K - - Fo u r individuals, including an Indian and a Pakistani, described as a ‘criminal group’ operating in New York City, have been indicted by a grand jury for bringing dancers from India on false pretenses and forcing them to dance at nightclubs and engage in prostitution. In an indictment filed July 9 and unsealed recently, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara accused Rashmikant Patel, Mehmood Hassanali Dhanani, Sabja Khimani and Riyaz Mazcuri of committing human trafficking offenses and visa fraud. Mazcuri, whose first name is also spelt ‘Riaz’ in news reports, is a psychiatrist from East Texas and was also known as ‘The Doctor.’ He was arrested on July 24, and released on a $300,000 bond according to sources. More people are expected to be charged. The grand jury indictment which was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York charged the group with four counts of – forced labor conspiracy, visa fraud conspiracy, visa fraud, and foreign labor contracting fraud conspiracy. According to the indictment, the group hired Indian dancers telling them they would be performing at cultural events in the US. It’s a simple straightforward premise structured around a comical plot about a gold-digger wastrel whose father leaves his billions to his dog. Playing the predatory retriever with an evil glint in his eye and wicked smirk on his face, Akshay Kumar has a ball in the film. He does a wickedly amiable mean act trying to poison, electrocute and drown the canine. Admittedly, the characters on screen seem to enjoy themselves more than the audience. Not that we don’t share their enjoyment. For a large part of the narration, Entertainment is fun to watch. The script is deftly and devilishly put together. If only writer-turned-co-director Sajid-Farhad did not trip over the cascade of word-play, the going would have been much

more pleasing. Lamentably every character speaks in a tumble of puns and word play, some of them painfully plodding and self-conscious. My most cringe-worthy ode to filmy word-play is, Aapna Sonakshi seena taan ke chal. Really, now. Where there are the saints there are also the Sinhas. The character played by the comically vibrant Krushna Abhishek crams in actors’ names

in every sentence. This would have been infuriatingly obtrusive in a film of a more serious nature. No such calamity befalls Entertainment. The biggest USP of the reasonably entertaining Entertainment is that it never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. In the hilarious opening, where in a product-endorsement spoof with Riteish Deshmukh, Akshay establishes his character as a rogue and a charlatan, the film hops skips and jumps through hilarious hoopla, sometime generating a reluctant laughter in the audience, at other times leaving you a little numbed by the fatuous flavor of the farce. Some scenes walk on thick ice, quite literally. The moral turningpoint for Akshay’s character vis-avis the canine happens in a scene spread out on a dangerously thin ice-bed. It defines what the film tries to achieve given its flimsy premise and nebulous moral ground. Tamannah has preciouslittle to do, and she does it not so well. — Subhash K. Jha

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has agreed to convene a meeting with the MPs from the state on August 18 to resolve the issue. “He has assured that till then, the orders will be kept in abeyance,” Vinod Kumar, one of the MPs of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) told reporters after a meeting with Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The MPs met the minister after raising issue in the Lok Sabha. They urged the central government to withdraw the directive, granting special powers over law and order in Hyderabad to the governor. On Rajnath Singh’s clarification that the norms suggested by the ministry are in accordance with the
