Along with self-help books and online forums as sources of inspiration, open discussions among peers can often have a greater impact in making a work-life balance a more achievable goal. Keynote speaker Dr. Hina Patel, an attending physician at the Advocate Sherman Hospital and a trustee of Village of South Barrington, delivered an insightful message on finding harmony within our various roles. She encouraged women to build pride in their identity through confidence in one’s intrinsic beliefs and practices. She urged women to let go of perfectionism but rather to strive for excellence and create a plan for success and emotional happiness. Additionally,

The first incident took place at 3:30 am on March 15 in the 3100 block of West Madison Street in East Garfield Park. The second incident was at 2 a.m. on March 18 in the 3400 block of West Chicago Avenue.

Beginning of a new relationship The three-day visit marked the culmination of a thaw in relations between Washington and the Communist island that began in December 2014 IANS, HAVANA
B
arack Obama, the first US president visiting Cuba in nearly 90 years, met Cuban President Raul Castro on March 21 on a historic trip that seeks to seal a new chapter in US-Cuban ties. Obama touched down in Havana on Sunday evening, ending a half century of estrangement in a personal demonstration of his core foreign policy principle of engaging with America’s enemies, CNN reported. The three-day visit marked the culmination of a thaw in relations between Washington and the Communist island that began in December 2014 -- 55 years after Fidel Castrol seized power. Obama arrived with First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia. “It’s been nearly 90 years since a US president stepped foot in Cuba, it is wonderful to be here. Back in 1928, President (Calvin) Coolidge came on a battleship. It took him three days to get here, it only took me three hours. For the first time ever Air Force One has landed in
Cuba,” he said during a speech at the US embassy in Havana shortly after his arrival. “This is a historic visit and it’s a historic opportunity to engage directly with the Cuban people and to forge new agreements, commercial deals, to build new ties between our two peoples.” The Obamas later began a walkabout in historic Old Havana. During a press conference in the evening, Obama and Castro acknowledged deep disagreements

on some issues. But the two leaders also found common ground on the topic of the economic embargo on Cuba, which both want lifted. Obama went so far as to declare
that “the embargo’s going to end”, though he did not say when, CNN reported. In an extraordinary sign of shifting attitudes, Castro was willing to answer one question on
Any third party will not affect our ties: China BEIJING: China said on March 21 that its continued mutually beneficial cooperation with Cuba does not target any third party, nor will any third party affect the in-depth development of China-Cuba ties. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to US President Barack Obama’s current visit to Cuba, Xinhua reported. “We have taken notice of Presi-
dent Obama’s visit to Cuba. We are glad to see the normalisation of the relations between the two countries,” Hua said. She said the current positive momentum between the two states is in line with the interests of the Americans and Cubans as well as the peace, stability and development in the region. “We hope that both sides can consolidate the current momentum,” Hua
said, urging the US to completely lift its decades-old embargo against Cuba as soon as possible. As for the association between China-Cuba relations and the USCuba relations by some media recently, Hua said China pays more attention to mutual benefits and winwin cooperation in the modern international relations. China and Cuba will continue to boost the mutually beneficial cooperation, Hua said.
why his regime was keeping Cubans incarcerated for expressing antigovernment views. “Did you ask if we had political prisoners? Give me a list of political prisoners and I will release them immediately,” Castro said defensively. In his own message on human rights, Obama defended his decision to come to Cuba even as government dissent is punished. “We have decades of profound differences,” Obama said when asked what his message on human rights was during his “frank conversation” on the issue with Castro. “I told President Castro that we are moving forward and not looking backwards”. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were later welcomed at a state dinner.
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton win Arizona primaries ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
R
epublican and Democratic presidential frontrunners, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, cruised to big victories in the crucial Arizona primary even as they faced challenges from rivals in other nominating contests. With his easy victory in Arizona’s winner-take-all primary, Trump added another 58 delegates to his tally of 681 delegates, while closest rival, Texas Senator Ted Cruz with 425 delegates hoped to slow Trump’s momentum with a victory on March 22 in the Utah caucuses. A strong victory in Utah caucuses with more than 50 percent support would give Cruz all the state’s 40 delegates and help him narrow the gap with Trump a little in the race
for 1,237 delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. Cruz is backed in Utah with its sizable Mormon population by the 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney, who backed Ohio Governor John Kasich in last week’s Ohio
primary. Romney said he would vote for Cruz in Utah as part of an effort to deny Trump the nomination. “The only path that remains to nominate a Republican rather than Mr. Trump is to have an open con-
vention,” he wrote in a posting on Facebook. “At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible.” Kasich, who entered the day with 143 delegates handily won his home state last week despite a strong push by Trump. But that is Kasich’s one and only victory and he seemed unlikely to add to his win total on Tuesday. Heading into the polls in the shadow of a series of explosions in Brussels, killing at least 30 people, Trump reiterated his proposal for an open-ended ban on Muslims entering the US and for using extralegal means to fight terrorists. Trump called for torturing Salah
Abdeslam, a suspect in November’s terrorist attack on Paris who was captured last week in Belgium. “You know, he may be talking, but he’ll talk a lot faster with torture,” he told CNN. Cruz responded to the attack with his own provocative proposal, calling for law enforcement authorities “to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” But Kasich was more restrained. “We are not at war with Islam; we’re at war with radical Islam,” he said. Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Clinton beat rival Bernie Sanders in the Arizona primary to take at least one of three Democratic presidential contests Tuesday in Western states. Arizona was the biggest prize of the night.

Modi to visit terror-hit Brussels The Indian prime minister to attend 13th India-EU Summit in Brussels and the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) in Washington, DC IANS, NEW DELHI

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi will on March 30 embark on a three-nation tour during the course of which he will attend the 13th India-EU Summit in Brussels, Belgium, and the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) in Washington. “The prime minister will pay his first official visit to Brussels on March 30, 2016, for the 13th India-EU Summit at the invitation of President of the European Council Donald Tusk and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker,” external affairs ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said at a media briefing here. “The European Union (EU) is India’s leading trade and investment partner and biggest export destination,” Swarup said. “India and EU are also strategic partners since 2004. The 13th India-EU Summit aims to deepen the India-EU strategic partnership and advance collaboration in priority areas for India’s growth and development.” According to Swarup, Modi will also hold a bilateral summit meeting with Belgium at the invitation of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel. NEW DELHI: The RSS has expressed its displeasure at BJP leaders describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “god’s gift to India” in the recent national executive meeting while also suggesting the party go ahead with the issue of “nationalism” but add development to it, informed sources said here. Court summons Kejriwal on July 30 NEW DELHI: A court here has summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on July 30 on a criminal complaint filed against him for allegedly giving “misleading information” in his poll affidavit ahead of the 2013 assembly elections. Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria issued summons on a complaint filed by an NGO alleging that Kejriwal had “willfully misled” the Election Commission of India (ECI) by concealing his correct address and suppressing the market value of his property. The court held that furnishing an improper address so that the proper/correct address remained untraceable and also giving an improper valuation of the property “prima facie amounts to willful concealment and suppression and also furnishing of false information and thus, there is sufficient ground for proceeding against the accused Arvind Kejriwal” under section 125 A (penalty for filing false affidavit) of the Representation of the People Act and section 177 (furnishing false information) of the Indian Penal Code”.
on further enhancing the economic partnership. The two prime ministers will also hold discussions on regional and global issues of mutual interest.”
From Brussels, Modi will proceed to Washington D.C., US, to participate in the Fourth Nuclear Security Summit on March 31 and April 1. The first NSS was held in Washington in April 2010 followed by the summits in Seoul in March 2012 and The Hague in March 2014. “Fifty-two countries and four international organizations are expected to attend the 2016 summit,” Swarup said. “The Nuclear Security Summit process has been instrumental in galvanizing leaders’ level attention

From Washington, Modi will fly to Riyadh for a bilateral visit to Saudi Arabia on April 2 and 3. He will be visiting the Gulf kingdom at the invitation of King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. This is first prime ministerial visit from India to Saudi Arabia after the visit of then prime minister Manmohan Singh in 2010.

“There is sufficient material on record to summon accused Arvind Kejriwal for offenses punishable under section 125 A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951...and section 177 of the Indian Penal Code committed by him before holding the post of chief minister of Delhi. Thus, let the summons be issued to the accused Arvind Kejriwal,” the court said. The court order came on a complaint filed by NGO Maulik Bharat Trust, through its office bearers, alleging that Kejriwal “suppressed the actual figures of property owned by him” and deliberately furnished a wrong address of his property in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad.
new government in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be in place, as early as the next week, after PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s “positive” meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi here this week. “Hopefully, the (new) government should be in place by March 29,” a senior Peoples Democratic Party leader and former minister Nayeem Akhtar said in Jammu as Mehbooba met the prime minister at his official 7 Race Course residence here. Jammu and Kashmir has been without an elected government after the death of chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 in All India Institute of Medical Sciences here. The state was put under the governor’s rule on January 9. The new government will end the political stalemate prevailing in the state ever since. The almost half an hour meeting put the PDP’s alliance with the BJP firmly back on track as Modi praised Sayeed as “a visionary” and

Don’t force ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says the new generation needs to be taught to hail Mother India AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
F
ew people will have any objections to chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai (Glory to Mother India)”, but are unlikely to accept the idea of being compelled to say it. They may still do so out of fear, but that can hardly be the kind of patriotism which the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had in mind when he said that the new generation had to be taught to hail Mother India. His directive, however, was promptly taken up by the Maharashtra legislators, including those belonging to the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who decided to expel a Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA for refusing to chant the slogan.
It is now obvious that the catchphrase has become the latest test after the focus on beef by the BJP and the Sangh Parivar to judge a person’s patriotism. If the ostensibly “secular” parties like the Congress and the NCP joined the saffron brotherhood in Maharashtra to ascertain a person’s loyalty, the reason is a pusillanimous disinclination to be branded as unpatriotic by the gung-ho saffron brigade. It will not be easy for the Congress to get over its cowardly faus pas in Maharashtra, which has starkly exposed its secular pretensions. There is little doubt that Rahul Gandhi’s bluster will lose much of its thrust in the coming days. As past-masters in playing a winwin game with the concept of nationalism, the Hindutva warriors
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat
must be delighted with the new card handed to them by their mentor in Nagpur. They undoubtedly believe that it can be used to corner their political opponents and bring them in line with saffron xenophobia. It will take considerable political courage and intellectual virtuosity for the Left-Liberals to challenge the BJP’s latest divisive manoeuvre. The “old” Nehruvian Congress might have been able to point to the fascistic tactics guiding the BJP and the parivar, but not the present self-serving and intellectually vacuous dis-
pensation. Yet, the arguments against the latest saffron offensive are obvious. There are already symbols which represent the country such as the tricolour and the national anthem. A respectful attitude towards these emblems is enough to testify to person’s loyalty. There is no need to add a slogan and that, too, by a quasi-political outfit like the RSS whose contribution to the independence movement was nil. Besides, the danger of vigilantism inherent in making a slogan obligatory for a person to prove his
patriotism is obvious. There may be occasions as in Mumbai some years ago when the Shiv Sena used to accost people in the streets and ask them to speak in Marathi. Those who fumbled were beaten up. Not surprisingly, the Sena now favours the revocation of the citizenship and voting rights of those who refuse to pay obeisance to Mother India. For the saffron camp, a major purpose behind the coinage of the slogan is to needle the Muslims, who are unwilling to bow their heads to any entity other than Allah.
Cheaper renewable energy has soared past n-power AMIT BHANDARI, NEW DELHI
R
enewable energy in India has overtaken nuclear power as the country seeks carbonfree sources of energy to balance its reliance on coal. Such energy generation in India is higher than its nuclear power generation and is growing at a much faster pace because it is cheaper and quicker to install. The cost of renewable energy is now lower than the cost of nuclear power and does not come with attendant risks, such as this week’s radioactive fuel leak in
Gujarat. Renewable-energy generation in India was 61.8 billion units, versus 36.1 billion units of nuclear-power generation during the financial year (FY) 2014-15. Renewable energy accounted for 5.6 percent of electricity generated in India, against 3.2 percent for nuclear power. Renewable energy has been growing at a faster pace than
nuclear power over two years. During 2013-14 and 2014-15, renewable energy grew at 11.7 percent and 16.2 percent, respectively, while nuclear-power growth has been almost flat over the same period. The bulk of India’s renewable energy comes from wind, but solar energy is growing faster with installed capacity reaching 5,775
mega watts (MW) in February 2016. The national solar mission has set a target of 100,000 MW of solar power by 2022. If this target is met, renewable energy will become the second largest source of power for India after coal, and ahead of hydropower, natural gas and nuclear energy. Nuclear power capacity in India is 5,780 MW. Another 1,500 MW is under construction and another 3,400 MW has been cleared — a total of 10,680 MW by the end of the decade. Renewable energy’s growth is propelled by the falling costs of solar and wind energy, as IndiaSpend reported. In November 2015, US based
SunEdison offered solar electricity in India at Rs.4.63/unit. In January 2016, this was followed by a Finnish company, Fortum Finnsurya, offering solar power to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for Rs.4.34/unit. At these prices, solar electricity is already cheaper than electricity coming from newly built hydroand nuclear-power plants. For instance, India is now starting work on a Rs 39,849-crore expansion (2 units of 1,000 MW each) of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Tamil Nadu, due to be completed by 2020-21. Electricity from these reactors-if they are completed on time-will cost Rs 6.3/unit.

Indian family faces wrath of South Africa opposition
Indian traders condemn Brussels terror attack BRUSSELS: An Indian trade body based here on March 22 expressed deep shock over the “heinous and horrible” terror attacks in the Belgian capital that left at least 34 people dead.

S
outh African opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA), threatened on March 20 to lay criminal charges against an Indian family “for what now amounts to further prima facie evidence of an attempt to improperly benefit from public resources”. This followed media reports on Sunday that former Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) CEO, Themba Maseko, was called by President Jacob Zuma prior to a meeting with the Gupta family from India in Johannesburg and asked to “help them”, Xinhua reported. At the meeting, it is alleged that the Guptas wanted government advertising to be channelled to The New Age newspaper run by the Gupta family. The DA said it will write to Pub-
Short takes Indian-Canadian man found dead in car TORONTO: The man found dead in an accident in the Newton area of the city is an Indian-Canadian man who was allegedly involved in the local drug trade, police in the Canadian city of Surrey said. Police found Lucky Dhanoa on March 11 in a car that hit a tree. Dhanoa was allegedly involved in the local drug trade and was found with drugs and money at the time of his death, The Link reported on March 20. Police found Dhanoa inside the vehicle with injuries “inconsistent with a car crash,” the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said in a release.
Indians in Qatar mourn accident victim DOHA: Scores of the Indian expatriate community members mourned the death of five-year-old Adien Mathew Shaji, who was killed in a bus accident, a media report said. Adien’s body was flown to India and laid to rest in Thiruvalla in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, the Gulf Times reported on March 20. A kindergarten student of Sarvodaya school, Adien died last week when his school van overturned. Four others sustained injuries.

may now explain why it is that the Department of Communications spent more than 10 million rand ($640,000) on advertising in The New Age in 2013/14. This amounts to 11.2 percent of government ad spend across 248 publications,” the DA claimed.
The party said it will continue to pursue all possible steps available to ensure that this attempt at “State Capture” by the Gupta family -aided and abetted by Zuma -- is halted and justice is obtained. The former chair of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Vytjie Mentor, publicly revealed recently that she was offered the job of Minister of Public Enterprises by the Guptas on conditions that she “drops the SAA (South African Airways) flightroute to India and give to them”. Mentor further alleged that Zuma was on the Guptas Saxonwold premises in Johannesburg at the time, in a room next door. Mentor’s utterances have led to several African National Congress members speaking out on similar encounters with the Guptas, including Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas.
Europe India Chamber of Commerce secretary general Sunil Prasad said the “barbarity” was against humanity. “We condemn these attacks and the terrorists who carried out this heinous and horrible barbarity.” Such a terrorist attack would have far-reaching geopolitical consequences for the entire Europe, he said. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Brussels to attend the EU-India Summit on March 30. “We hope the security situation in Brussels will significantly improve and the Belgian authorities will take all necessary security measures for a successful visit of Modi,” Prasad added.

TERROR STRIKES EUROPE At least 34 people killed in two deadly explosions at the Zaventem airport in Brussels and a more powerful blast at a metro station; Islamic State claims responsibility
IANS, BRUSSELS
A
t least 34 people were killed on March 22 as two deadly explosions rocked the Zaventem airport in the Belgian capital and a more powerful blast ripped through a train coach at a metro station in the heart of Brussels in the worst terror attack in Europe in four months. Fourteen people were killed as two quick explosions took place in the country’s biggest airport just before 8 a.m. in a departure area, breaking windows, furniture and machinery, leaving it looking like a war zone. Over 80 people were injured in the huge blasts, which triggered a panic run by hundreds of stunned passengers and staff from the airport building. Authorities said a suicide bomber was to blame for one explosion and that someone was heard shouting in Arabic and open fire moments earlier. A Kalashnikov was later found near the body of a dead man. An hour later, another explosion shattered the middle of a three-

Islamic State claims terror attacks ROME: The Islamic State group has reportedly claimed the terrorist blasts at the Brussels airport and a city metro station on March 22 and pledged to stage similar attacks in Europe. IS’s Amaq news agency took credit for the Brussels attacks, praising their “planning, rapid execution and dynamism” on the Telegram messaging application, Egyptian

daily El-Watan reported. The message also vowed “further similar operations in Europe”, according to El-Watan. At least 14 people are believed to have died in two explosions at the Zaventem airport and 20 more in the bombing at the Maelbeek metro station about an hour later. At least one of the explosions was caused by a suicide bomber, authorities said.
included, rallied in solidarity with Belgium, Prime Minister Charles Michel called it a “moment of tragedy” and blamed it on “blind, violent and cowards”. He declined to link the blood-
bath with the March 18 arrest in Brussels of Salah Abdeslam, the suspect in the Paris terrorist attack which killed 130 people in November last year. The injured included two employees of the privately-owned Indian airline Jet Airways. A Slovenian diplomat, said to be a man, was also injured, although the authorities did not release his name. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the terror attacks were “disturbing” and “condemnable”. Jet Airways said it quickly moved guests and staff on the landside at Brussels airport away from the terminal and transit guests in the terminal building to hangers in coaches. Prime Minister Michel said: “We were already fearing attacks. That has happened now.” He said Bel-
France urges ‘global response’ to fight terrorism IANS, PARIS
F
rench President Francois Hollande on March 22 called for “a global response” to combat terrorism which was targeting at Europe in a series of “cowardly and heinous attacks” in Brussels. “We are facing a global threat, so we need a global response. The war against terrorism must be conducted in all Europe and with the necessary means,” Xinhua quoted Hollande as saying. “We have to ensure that decisions are effectively implemented,” he added in the wake of a series of deadly explosions which rocked Brussels earlier in the day.
French President Francois Hollande
The French president warned that the battle to eradicate terrorist cells “will be long”.
“The war against terrorism must be conducted calmly, with clarity and determination. We have to deploy the necessary means,” he said. Earlier on March 22, twin blasts hit Brussels airport, leaving at least 14 dead. Another explosion hit a metro station close to the European Union institutions, killing 20 people and making other 106 passengers injured, triggering high alert to neighboring countries where security was reinforced. “In these circumstances, the French government decided to further strengthen security measures, police units at borders, and in
transport,” Hollande’s office said in a statement. Speaking after a security meeting, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said he had deployed a further 1,600 police to bolster security at its borders and on public transport. The Brussels attacks came a few days after Belgian police captured Salah Abdeslam, a suspect of the Paris attacks on November 13 last year in which 130 people were killed. On March 22, Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon warned the country was on high alert for a possible terror attack in the wake of Abdeslam’s arrest.
gium was determined to deal with the situation, and that a suicide bomber was involved in the airport attack. The airport and all public transport were shut down after the bloodbath. So was the European Union headquarters, near the Maalbeek station where 20 people died. Belgium’s nuclear plant in Huy town was evacuated. “The Metro was leaving Maelbeek station for Schuman when there was a really loud explosion,” Alexandre Brans, 32, told the media, wiping blood from his face. An intern working at the airport told Al Jazeera: “When I heard the first explosion, lots of people started screaming and running. When I heard the second explosion, which was about 30 seconds after the first, everything got chaotic. I could see panic on everyone’s face, blood on their bodies.” Hundreds of people fled the airport building, some with blood on their faces. First reports said the blasts were centered at the American Airlines check-in desk. The false ceiling in the building came crashing down.
US issues travel alert after attacks WASHINGTON: The US government alerted its citizens to “potential risks” of travelling to and throughout Europe following a series of attacks at Zaventem airport and a Metro station in Brussels, which killed at least 34 people and injured over 200. “Terrorist groups continue to plan near-term attacks throughout Europe, targetting sporting events, tourist sites, restaurants and transportation,” the State Department said in a statement on March 22. The government, which urges the US citizens to “exercise vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation”, stated that the travel alert expires on June 20 without explaining the choice of this date. “European governments continue to guard against terrorist attacks and conduct raids to disrupt plots,” the State Department added in the warning. “We work closely with our allies and will continue to share information with our European partners that will help identify and counter terrorist threats.” Authorities on March 22 reinforced security at main airports and subways all over the US.

Emergency lifted at Kakrapar nuclear plant An emergency was declared after a leak was detected in the nuclear plant’s coolant channel on March 11 IANS, CHENNAI
T
he leaking coolant channel in the first 220 MW nuclear power reactor at Gujarat’s Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) has been plugged and the plant emergency has been terminated, said an official in the sectoral regulator’s office. “The leak in the coolant channel has been plugged after isolating the leak. The plant emergency has now been called off,” Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) secretary S.Harikumar told IANS over phone on Tuesday. A plant emergency had been declared following the leak on March 11, signifying heightened state of alert for the plant personnel and management, the AERB had said. According to Harikumar, 12 fuel bundles have been removed safely from the coolant channel before plugging the leak. A 220MW pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) like the one at KAPS has
Cong claims ‘conflict of interest’ against Maharashtra ministers NEW DELHI: The Congress on March 22 sharpened its attack on the Maharashtra government, alleging existence of a few cases of “Maha conflict of interest” as a number of ministers are holding key positions in construction and other private companies. “Maharashtra health minister (Deepak Sawant) is also director of an Eye Hospital. If this isn’t conflict of Interest, then what is it?” Congress’ official twitter handler INC India said in a tweet about the Bharatiya Janata PartyShiv Sena government. It cited similar instances of other ministers, like Minister of State for Housing Ravindra Waikar, PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil, Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde, Minister of State for Industries Pravin Patil and Minister of State for Finance Deepak Kesarkar. The Congress said in another tweet: “Maha conflict of Interest in @Dev_Fadnavis’ Government. Shouldn’t these Ministers step down?” The Congress alleged that while Pankaja Munde is on the board of at least five companies, Minister for Housing Waikar is on the board of a construction firm. Similary, junior minister Pravin Patil is on the board of Pravin Builders and Developers, the Congress alleged.

306 coolant channels and each channel will have 12 fuel bundles. On March 11 morning, the first reactor at KAPS belonging to Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) shut down automatically on following leakage of heavy water from its coolant channel. According to Harikumar, the investigations as to the cause of leak will be carried out and it will take some time to be completed.
“The lessons to be learnt will be known after the investigations have been completed. Then necessary action that needs to be taken will be taken,” he added. The coolant channel at the affected reactor was changed only in 2011. Presently KAPS Unit 1 is in cold shut down state and all the plant systems are functioning normally, AERB said in a statement on March 22.
BENGALURU: The Karnataka legislative assembly on March 21 saw uproarious scenes and heated exchanges between lawmakers of the ruling Congress and opposition BJP on the government setting up the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in a bid to ‘scuttle’ the Lokayukta (ombudsman). Though the lower house was to debate on the state budget for the ensuing fiscal (2016-17), which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented last week, opposition leader and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar of the BJP urged Speaker K. Thimmappa to allow a discussion on the controversial ACB, which has
enraged the people in the state. Sensing the mood of the opposition benches, as the Janata DalSecular (JD-S) supported the BJP demand, the speaker allowed a discussion on the ACB. The ACB was notified on March 14 when the anti-graft watchdog Lokayukta had not been in limbo in the absence of its head (ombudsman) and one of its two UPA lokayuktas (Justice Subash B. Adi) going on protest leave till the monthend. “It should be called Corruption Protection Bureau (CPB) and not PCB as its formation is an attempt to shield the chief minister,” Shettar claimed.
Indian cities celebrate Earth Hour 2016 IANS, MUMBAI/SHIMLA/CHENNAI
T
housands of people across the country joined the global community by switching off extra lights in private and government buildings on March 19 evening to mark Earth Hour 2016. In Mumbai several government and private buildings, public landmarks as well as common citizens contributed to ‘cooling’ the Earth by switching off lights for an hour between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. Those who participated included several celebrities, film and television stars, industrialists and common people in the global initiative of the WWF which turns 10 this year. This year, the WWF is also promoting ‘clean and green country’ with multiple solar energy reforms following the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015. Mumbai-based NGO Young Environmentalists organized a cyclothon at daybreak on March 19 and closed with a carnival at Bandra’s coastal Carter Road where solar and paper lanterns were distributed to slum kids from Dharavi. Reports of lights being switched off were received from other major cities in Maharashtra like Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Nashik. to young people directly. “We did not approach any government organization. The idea is to create awareness in the minds of young people. He said that from March 14 onwards, they have been visiting various colleges in and around Chennai and have spoken to college students on climate change. “We also took with us Tiffany Maria Brar, a blind social activist running an NGO in Thiruvananthapuram to all the colleges to address the students,” he said.

he Indian middle order’s most trusted soldier Virat Kohli anchored a tricky chase to enable his side humble arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets in a rain-curtailed World Twenty 20 group 2 tie at the packed Eden Gardens here on Saturday. The hosts thus kept intact their all-win record against the neighboring nation in World Cups. Kohli top-scored with an unbeaten 55 of 37 balls, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni remained
22 mn T20 fans use Facebook NEW DELHI: The World Twenty20 encounter between India and Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata saw 22 million interactions between 8.2 million unique Facebook users showcasing support for their teams. The most mentioned cricketers on Facebook were Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi, and from women’s match were Mithali Raj and Sana Mir, Facebook said on March 20. Indian celebrities added profile frames to their ‘profile pictures’ supporting Team India. With a tagline saying “Go Team India” on her profile frame, actress Priyanka Chopra wrote: “I’ve arrived a little late to this party... blame it on my endless days and different timezones! But I’m super excited to support team India at the ICC World Twenty 2016.”
Kohli top-scored with an unbeaten 55 of 37 balls, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni remained unconquered
unconquered on 13. For Pakistan, Mohammad Sami returned figures of 2/17, as the visitors suffered their first loss to India at the historic venue in any limited over game. Having set a target of 119 runs, Pakistan pacers were able to make early inroads in the famed Indian batting line-up. Yuvraj Singh and Kohli — the pair instrumental in India’s Asia Cup victory against the same opponents a few weeks back -- then came together in a 61-run stand. After 10 overs India had recovered to be at 60/3.
Thereafter, both batsmen delighted the crowd with some stupendous stroke play which included a monstrous hit from Yuvraj against Wahab Riaz. But the same shot led to his undoing four balls later. Kohli then tried closing the innings in style with some scintillating boundaries against the likes of Amir and Shahid Afridi. At the other end, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was content in running the singles and giving his partner the strike. But with seven runs needed Dhoni lofted Mohammad Irfan for a straight six.
Earlier, put into bat, Pakistan managed to set India an asking rate of 6.61 runs per over with Shoaib Malik (26) being the top scorer. For India, spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja returned economical figures of 0/12 and 1/20, respectively. Off spinner Ashwin was able to get quite some purchase off the Eden strip from his very first over. At the other end, Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah were able to keep a tight leash on the willowers, who managed only 24 in their power play of five overs.
Indian sport langdi could see ‘achche din’ IANS, PANAJI
I
t was perhaps around 60 years ago, says Rama Kerkar, a 66year-old housewife from Mapusa, that she last played landgi with her friends and neighbours. “We hardly had television at the time. Friends and neighbours would gather in the evenings. We would split ourselves into two groups. Every two minutes, one person from each group would chase the rest by hopping and running after our opponents on one foot. It was tiring, but there was so much thrill,” Kerkar recalls. Langdi, she rues, has all but disappeared from the fun radar of children today, who are more obsessed with either mainstream sports like cricket, football or mobile and computer-based games. But if one goes by the newly
nominated president of the Asian Langdi Federation and Goa’s sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar, traditional Indian sports like langdi, which was once extremely popular in western India, may still have hope. Tawadkar claims that the langdi is being pushed as a preparatory sport for young footballers in Europe and could well see ‘aachche din’ in the
coming years. “The BJP government both in Goa and the Centre is committed to promoting more than 50 traditional Indian sports which are slowly disappearing or fading from public memory. Langdi is one of those sports. The federation plans to make langdi not just popular in Goa and India, but in the rest of Asia too,” Tawadkar told IANS.
Part-time off spinner Suresh Raina Athen got rid of Sharjeel. The left-hander’s mistimed loft was gobbled up by Hardik Pandya who took an outstanding catch diving forward much to the delight of the 67,000 vociferous supporters. Shahid Afridi promoted himself up the batting order to have a go, but he too found it difficult coping with the turn. Shahzad, feeling the pressure at the other end, tried a heave against Bumrah but only managed to get it to point, where Jadeja took the catch running back a few steps.
Afridi harps on Kashmir at Mohali MOHALI: On the backfoot after his team’s loss to arch-rivals India in Kolkata last week, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi chose to raise an unexShahid Afridi pected controversy - raking up Kashmir, of all things - before the start of a World T20 here on March 22. Asked by commentator Rameez Raja if he and his team had support from the crowds here, Afridi said that “a lot of people are here for Kashmir”. “Ya, a lot of people, a lot of people are here from Kashmir as well. And I want to thanks people of Kolkata, they really support us as well,” Afridi said just before the start of the Pakistan vs New Zealand group match.

He comes to the sets, looks at a step and starts dancing. All that it takes him to learn a step is just a few minutes. And since he’s so good at dancing, it encouraged me to work harder,” Adah told IANS. In the film, Simbu and Adah will dazzle with the introduction song Maaman waiting. “It’s a fantastic number with a very catchy tune,” she said, adding that Simbu is very strong at portraying the right expressions. ‘Allow personal space to celebrities’ IANS, MUMBAI

ctress Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday urged the media to allow “personal space” to celebrities, when she was repeatedly questioned on her ongoing legal tiff with actor Hrithik Roshan. “Sometimes you guys have to allow personal space to celebrities also... It can be very overwhelming. (Being) Strong doesn’t mean you can just walk through life without being affected or intimidated.
Being strong means that standing up against things in spite of all of this. “So, you guys need to give me some personal space. It is not that I won’t talk about it. I will. As of now, please grant me that space,” Kangana said when asked for her comments on the sidelines of an event meant for the announcement of the “Queen” actress’ appointment as the Melange by Lifestyle brand ambassador. Kangana is said to have been in
a relationship with her Krrish 3 costar Hrithik in the past. A controversy came into being when Kangana hinted at Hrithik being her ‘ex’ as she said in an interview that she fails to understand “why exes do silly things to get your attention”. The topic of discussion was Hrithik’s purported hand in getting Kangana replaced by Sonam Kapoor in Aashiqui 3. The matter took an ugly turn with both of them slapping legal notices against each other.
‘Kapoor & Sons’: Joy and woe are woven fine

ollywood film Kapoor & Sons is a saga of a dysfunctional family, which makes you laugh and cry with its members, as you become an intrinsic part of their lives. It is a complete family entertainer with a universal appeal. Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra) and Rahul (Fawad Khan) are two siblings based in New Jersey and London respectively and arrive at Coonoor to visit their ailing grandfather (Rishi Kapoor) who lives with their parents Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah). Film: “Kapoor & Sons”; Director: Shakun Batra; Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor; Rating: **** accusations, lies and yet, bound by love, form the crux of this film. Clearly, the film is on a dysfunctional family, and some realistic elements interwoven in its narrative add to its effectiveness in being relatable to the audience.
Writer-director Shakun Batra can take a bow for his astute handling of a simple story, with a complicated plot owing to the complex lives of the characters. His dealing of human emotions along with the treatment of the subject is what
makes the film stand apart. The characters are etched to perfection, their lives almost unfolding before our eyes in the two hours. The screenplay is taut and full of unexpected twists which keep you riveted to the screen, never letting
Indian filmmakers denied Pakistan visa NEW DELHI: In a unique apolitical ‘exchange’, some Pakistani filmmakers came to India as part of a peace initiative called Zeal for Unity last week. Indian filmmakers who were to visit Pakistan were denied a visa, though. From India, filmmakers like Tigmanshu Dhulia, Tanuja Chandra, Ketan Mehta and Bejoy Nambiar were slated to go over to the other side on foot through the AttariWagah border checkpost for Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd’s (ZEEL) Zeal For Unity (ZFU). But they couldn’t.
The ZFU team maintains the applications were made in time, but information on visas was delayed Manzoor Ali Memon, a diplomat from the Pakistan High Commission here, said: “We have checked with our concerned officers, but we don’t have any such applications... We have no details and applications of such kind.” The ZFU team maintains the applications were made in time, but information on visas was delayed beyond March 16 when they were to travel and then the passports came back without the visa. An initiative to use the “strength of creative thought leadership” from both the countries to bridge the divide between the two, ZFU involves six Indian directors. Pakistani filmmakers, except Mehreen Jabbar, walked into India on March 15. After a day in Amritsar, they were to walk back into their country with the Indian entourage. But since the Indians didn't get the visa, the Pakistani filmmakers decided to stay an additional day, thereby not dissolving, but strengthening the purpose of the exchange.
your interest wane. Performance-wise, Kapoor & Sons is impressive too. Siddharth Malhotra as the “runner up” or “second best” of the two brothers, portrays his angst and resentment, in an understated manner. He is every inch the son who tries hard to prove his worth to his parents to make them proud. Playing his love interest, is Alia Bhatt as Tia Malik, a Mumbai-based girl who is an orphan and misses having a family. She renders a zesty performance with oodles of spontaneity and panache and is equally the heart stealer in emotional scenes. She lights up the screen with her joie de vivre. Fawad Khan as the successful novelist and older sibling essays Rahul with restraint and yet, has his moments when he lets his guard down, if only to express his anger, disappointment and hurt.

This year, the legend of Radha Ji’s Sakhiyan from Barsana was brought live. BAPS hosts Midwest women’s conclave BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- In conjunction with the International Women’s Day, BAPS hosted its 10th annual Women’s Conference at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, Illinois on March 12. Attracting over 400 participants, this year’s conference explored the theme, “Life in Resonance” and discussed ideas for approaching three major aspects of one’s life: cultural identity, work-life balance, and emotional health. In today’s world, everyone is constantly striving for balance and self-fulfilment, whether it be at school, work, or at home. Additionally,
C
(L-R) Dr. Sonal Patel, Anesthesiologist & Dr. Hina Patel, Physician
Pharmacist Komal Patel, born and raised in America, also shared how a dual cultural identity was in fact an asset, rather than a limitation, in today’s diverse, multicultural society. “We often believe we have to choose one identity over the other, forgetting that we have the opportunity to bring together the best of both worlds.”
Circling the ever-debatable topic of maintaining a work-life balance, Dr. Purvi Parikh explored various practical methods and solutions, including selfintrospection, for seeking clarity and focusing on purposeful priorities in our chaotic lives. She also emphasized the importance of living a healthy lifestyle by highlighting wellness and meditation as ways “to keep ourselves centered as we juggle a variety of commitments.” Sushma Patel, a medical testing professional at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center, reminded the attendees of the immense power that spirituality holds in life through the connection between the mind and the body. Spreading this message of science, practicality and spirituality across the nation, the conference was held in 12 cities with attendees from various personal and professional backgrounds. Panel discussions and Q&A sessions enabled the speakers to effectively communicate their experiences and thus, enrich the audience with practical applications to bring balance into their lives. The conference attendees were reminded not only of the necessity for maintaining stability, but also of their inherent strengths which allow them to pursue this very goal.

Ban on texting while walking on cards
BY A STAFF WRITER NDIANAPOLIS, IN-- We already have a law making it illegal to text and drive, but some towns are now enforcing laws against texting and walking. Lawmakers in Arkansas and New York are trying to pass laws to ban pedestrians from using their cell phones while crossing the street. Videos showing people doing the same have gone viral on YouTube. A news chopper captured a bear wandering around a California neighborhood last month. It had television viewers’ attention, but not that of a man walking down the same street, focused on his phone and texting. He looked up just in time to avoid what would likely have been an unforgettable encounter with nature on four legs. Then there was the lady so engrossed in texting on her cell phone in the mall, she didn’t see the fountain in front of her, until it was too late. You can hear the laughing of the people who posted the video. Most states have already tackled drivers distracted by texting, now New York and Arkansas are trying to pass laws banning the use of mobile devices while walking. “If you’re walking and texting and you happen to walk out into traffic, you’re on your own and there’s a good chance you could get hurt badly,” said Dr. Joseph O’Neil with IU Health. O’Neil helped draft Indiana’s ban on texting while driving, but he’s not sure the same is necessary for texting pedestrians. “I think common sense should prevail. I don’t know if we need to legislate down to that,” he said.

Shaukat Sindhu, 56, of Warren, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, one count of corrupt interference with the administration of the Internal Revenue Service and one count of marriage fraud. structuring real estate transactions that defrauded banks out of millions of dollars and lined their personal pockets. The duo skirted income tax regulations by using multiple Social Security numbers, dealing in cash, and concealing income and
assets in the names of others. Sindhu owned several gas stations and other commercial properties, and off and on, faulted on mortgage payments on these properties. Between 2008 and 2014, Sindhu, Iqbal and others submitted false and misleading information about their ownership of these properties to cheat the First Midwest and Consumers National banks of millions of dollars. Iqbal acted as a straw buyer for Sindhu in a short sale, enriching Sindhu by reducing or eliminating the principle owned on the properties. Iqbal also served as a straw buyer for Sindhu for a 16,800-square foot, nine-bedroom, 13-bathroom home in Oak Brook, Illinois. That home will be forfeited as part of the plea agreement. The two will be sentenced on June 21.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- On March 7, devotees celebrated the festival of Maha Shivaratri, in the Hari Om Mandir, with great joy and enthusiasm. Thousands of devotees came to the shrine to perform the rituals and sing the glory of Lord Shiva. The temple authorities had made special arrangements to perform these Poojas at two stations. The Mandir Priest, Pandit Dinesh Kumar recited the holy Mantras and helped devotees to perform the special “Rudrabhishek Pooja” at the regular Shiv Darbar, which is also open every Monday. Another station was set up with a huge Brass Statue of Lord Shiva, the Shivling & Nandi raised on a tall pedestal, shining bright amidst lights, exhibiting His Glory, Charm and Might. The whole ambience of this setup reminded people of the Heavenly Abode of Shiva on the Kailash Parbat. A special Bhajan Sandhya was organized in the evening, where two well-known singers of the Midwest region: Padmini and Uma Nath mesmerized the audiences with their soulful Bhajans. The president of the temple board, Vipan Wadhera, thanked his team members and the volunteers who had worked hard to make appropriate arrangements for this day. Priest Pandit Dinesh Kumar recited the Shiv Mantras nonstop, all day, did Poojas and helped the Bhakt Jan who came to the temple, to seek solace and peace in the lap of their Lord Shiva on this pious day of Maha Shivaratri.

Electricity from tomato waste possible: study BY A STAFF WRITER APID CITY, SD -- Damaged tomatoes unsuitable for sale can be used as a powerful source of generating electricity, says a study involving Indian American scientists. “We have found that spoiled and damaged tomatoes left over from harvest can be a particularly powerful source of energy when used in a biological or microbial electrochemical cell,” said Namita Shrestha from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. “The process also helps purify the tomato-contaminated solid waste and associated waste water,” added Shrestha, who is working on the project with Venkataramana Gadhamshetty, an assistant professor at South Dakota, and Alex Fogg, an undergraduate chemistry major at Princeton University. The research findings were presented at the 251st National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society held in San Diego, Calif., on March 16.

Grains cause Type 2 diabetes: new book
Dr John Poothullil
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- In “Eat, Chew, Live,” Dr. John Poothullil argues it is time to re-evaluate the accepted theory of insulin resistance as the cause of Type 2 diabetes, because medical research has yet to explain how it happens or why. In his view, it is illogical that millions of people are suddenly developing insulin resistance. After 20 years of research, Poothullil has demonstrated that Type 2 diabetes is not caused by the hormonal disease of insulin resistance, but rather by a very normal metabolism that goes haywire when people over consume grains. In Western nations, it is the consumption of wheat-flour breads, rice, corn, packaged foods, cakes, pizza, donuts, and other grain-based flour products. In many developing nations, it is the increasing consumption of rice. With illustrations of the science involved, Poothullil explains that muscle cells, the largest share of cells in the body, can get their energy from glucose or fatty acids. When people over consume grains over a period of time, they eventually fill up their natural allotment of fat cells. The further consumption of grains means that the fatty acids broken down from the glucose in grains have nowhere to be stored. The fatty acids thus start to flow freely in the bloodstream, and are easily used as fuel by muscle cells rather than glucose. This metabolism, which Poothullil calls the “fatty acid burn switch,” leaves the glucose in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar and eventually to the diagnosis of diabetes. The key to preventing or reversing Type 2 diabetes, Poothullil said, is to stop consuming grains as much as possible.
W
Prof. Venkataramana Gadhamshetty & Doctoral student Namita Shrestha
“Microbial electrochemical cells use bacteria to break down and oxidize organic material in defective tomatoes,” Shrestha explained. The oxidation process, triggered by the bacteria interacting with tomato waste, releases electrons that are captured in the fuel cell and become a source of electricity. The power output from the team’s device is quite small--10 mg of tomato waste can result in 0.3 watts of electricity. But the researchers note that with an
expected scale up and more research, electrical output could be increased by several orders of magnitude. Incidentally, in January 2015, Gadhamshetty had received the National Science Foundation’s prestigious CAREER award that carried a $500,000 research grant, which funds over five years the Indian American scientist’s research that could pave the way for the next generation of minimally invasive, corrosion-resistant coatings for infrastructure.

Hatchet-wielding man shot by customer
Kuldeep Singh
BY A STAFF WRITER HITE CENTER, WASH -- A man with a concealed carry permit reportedly shot and killed a man who entered a convenience store and began attacking people with a hatchet on March 20, and the police said they were grateful the regular customer was present when the attack occurred. In Seattle, the King County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 7-Eleven in White Center, Washington around 5:45 am. A clerk, Kuldeep Singh, at the store reported that a masked man entered the store and immediately began to swing a hatchet toward a customer before turning his sights on the clerk. The attacker did not speak during the attack. Singh suffered minor stomach injuries, but at that time a customer armed with a pistol shot and killed the suspect. The police said the shooter did not appear to have done anything wrong and they were happy he was present. “Fortunately, because of this customer with his concealed weapon, this could have been a lot worse,” said King County Sheriff’s Sergeant Cindi West. Singh said the customer who fired his weapon was a 60-year-old Seattle man who visited the store daily, and the clerk reported the man was drinking his morning coffee when the attack began.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW ORLEANS, LA -- A federal jury in New Orleans has convicted the owner of a health care company and an Indian American physician for their roles in a $34-million Medicare fraud scheme that operated for seven years in New Orleans and surrounding communities in Louisiana. Elaine Davis, 59, and Dr. Pramela Ganji, 66, both of New Orleans, were each convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of health care fraud last week after an eight-day trial before Chief US Judge Kurt D. Englehardt of the Eastern District of Louisiana. The duo will be sentenced on July 6, 2016. Evidence introduced at trial showed that Davis owned and controlled the operations of Christian Home Health Care Inc., and Davis and Ganji caused Christian to bill Medicare for home health care services that were not needed and/or were not provided, according to the Justice Department. In her role, Davis paid employees to recruit new patients from communities in and around New Orleans and Hammond, Louisiana. Christian then sent the new patients’ Medicare information to doctors, including Ganji, to obtain their signatures to certify that the patients qualified to receive home health care services, which trial evidence showed they did not qualify for or need. BY A STAFF WRITER LMONT, NY-- An Indian American woman based in Elmont, New York, Raina Massey, who claims to be a medical doctor from India with a long history of complaints of cheating against her, has been arrested on charges of H-1B visa fraud, for luring foreigners with nonexistent jobs and charging them unnecessary visa fee. Massey, the head of Newark, New Jersey-based Care WorldWide (CWW), is facing charges of wire fraud, visa fraud and identity theft after she allegedly conducted a multifaceted immigration scheme from February 2012 to March 2015, federal authorities said. According to federal prosecutors, from February 2012 through March 2015, Massey and others executed the fraud scheme through her company, which purported to be a clinical research company, but was actually a shell company that did little to no legitimate work of any kind. Massey and others sought out and advertised for qualified foreign professionals, purportedly to work for CWW in clinical research positions as beneficiaries of H-1B visas. Evidence introduced at trial showed that from 2007 through June 2015, Christian submitted more than $34.4 million in claims to Medicare, a large number of which were fraudulent. Medicare paid Christian approximately $29.6 million on these claims. The FBI and HHS-OIG investigated the case, which was brought as part of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force under the supervision of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section and the US Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Indian actor Punam Patel gets role in ABC comedy
Seminar on diabetes
2 Indians indicted for harboring six aliens BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- A federal grand jury has indicted two Indian nationals for allegedly smuggling foreign nationals into the United States through the Newark Liberty International Airport. Nileshkumar Patel, 41 and Harsad Mehta, 66, both of India, were arrested on October 21 at the airport and remain detained. They were charged with one count of conspiracy to bring in and harbor aliens and one count of conspiracy to launder money, the indictment says. Additionally, Patel was charged with six counts of smuggling foreign nationals into the US for private financial gain. Mehta faces four counts on that charge. According to the office of US Attorney Paul J. Fishman, US Homeland Security Investigations received a tip that Patel and Mehta were planning to smuggle individuals into the US. Prosecutors said a smuggling group brought in people via land, air or sea routes using false documents. Beginning in April 2014, Patel and Mehta began meeting with an undercover law enforcement agent posing as a smuggler. They agreed with the informant to bring the foreign nationals from India to Thailand where the agent would smuggle the individuals to America on commercial airline flights. According to Fishman’s office, Patel and Mehta agreed to pay a $10,000 down payment on each person to be smuggled, with a balance to be collected later. The indictment says they wired nearly $140,000 into an account for four individuals in 2014. In all, they arranged to smuggle six people. The charge of conspiracy to bring in and harbor aliens carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The money laundering charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison and each charge of alien smuggling carries a minimum of three years in prison up to five years.

The project hails from Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland, Scott Foley and Greg Grunberg. Written by Foley and Grunberg and directed by Gail Mancuso, ‘Toast’ revolves around engaged couple Max (Jono Kenyon) and Page (Jerrika Hinton), who, over their wedding rehearsal dinner, have their eclectic family and friends give toasts recalling anecdotes about the couple. But flashbacks reveal that the toasts don’t always get it right, as we watch the true story of their complicated, funny and relatable road to marriage. Patel will play Arden, a charmingly spoiled life of the party who is first up to give a toast at the rehearsal dinner and definitely says more than she should. Patel, who cut her teeth in Chicago’s Second City, is also an alum of CBS’ Diversity Showcase. SUGANDHA RAWAL, NEW DELHI
T
he ramp of the Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) Autumn-Winter 2016 turned out to be a canvas for designers to paint a sartorial journey of Indian traditional weaves and textiles with a modern touch and with strokes of socially relevant messages. Not just were the designs contemporary, but comfort and functionality turned out to be high on the agenda of the fall lookbook. The fashion extravaganza, which started on March 16 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, saw a fitting finale on March 20 with nine designers, including names like Rahul Mishra and Samant Chauhan, presenting Indian traditional craft with a contemporary twist and in a more global format with 'India Modern' theme. The autumn-winter edition was special in many ways - change in the venue, dedicated menswear shows, special accessory show and spotlight on healthy life with focus on pushing the idea of being 'fashionably fit'. Apart from Mishra and Chauhan, stalwarts from fashion industry like Rajesh Pratap Singh, Anju Modi, Abraham and Thakore, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna,
Fashion designers during the Grand Finale of Amazon India Fashion Week 2016 in New Delhi, on March 20.
Amit Aggarwal, Pankaj and Nidhi and Aneeth Arora came together for the finale. They blended traditional craft and weaves to showcase their modern styles and sensibilities of contemporary India. Trends that stood out this edition were layered looks, asymmetrical hemlines, suede sleeves, capes, contemporary mould to 'desi' saris, suits, comfort dressing, pant suits, long coats for women, and

athleisure. The quirky elements that added spunk was the use of sneakers with almost anything, animal print shoes, red socks and chic eye make-up. A touch of India through fabrics, weaves, work, hand embroidery, prints, intricate and detail work of zardozi, brocade and experiments with khadi, stood out; while designer Namrata Joshipura captured New York's energy and
spirit with her prêt collection. The runway was also used to bring attention to causes as designer Gaurav Gupta brought the issue of climate change on the ramp through his collection 'Melt', in which he tried to create awareness about the effects of climate change and pollution on the environment, and designer Pallavi Mohan showcased 'Synthesis' with a message of tolerance. The main focus of the edition was
fusion wear, which suits international needs. Designer Gautam Gupta told IANS: "One trend that is still going strong is the androgynous collection, apart from that we are seeing a lot more handloom stuff being done in a contemporary wear. The handloom is being given more importance. It is being used to make contemporary way so that it can go well with international sensibilities." Textures like ikat, patola, batek and tribal prints have come back to the ramp, he pointed out and added that these art forms are being "modified, modernized and used so that foreigners can use it". Organized by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) - the country's apex fashion body the runway of 27th edition of the event, in association with Maybelline New York, turned out to be a platform for 45 designers, who showcased their collections at the five-day event through 30 shows. On the business front, FDCI president Sunil Sethi told IANS that though it has been an "encouraging season", numbers can't be shared. The designers played with earthy tones, white, blue, indigo, browns, beige, gold with an occasional splash of orange, red, and pink.
Comfort dressing, layered looks: Top trends from AIFW 2016 IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Winter-Festive 2016 edition of Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) 2016 has concluded leaving behind many fashion trends for the fashionistas to follow. From a romantic look with lace, comfort dressing to layered looks, one can take the pick from a plethora of designs. Narendra Kumar, creative director at Amazon Fashion, shares the top five looks from the fashion gala that was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and ended on Sunday, here. l Romantic look with lace: Designers Shantanu and Nikhil showcased gowns in vintage lace during their fashion show and it is definitely a trend setter. l Comfort dressing: We also saw comfort dressing by brand Bodice
and Malini Ramani. Relaxed silhouettes or anti-fit silhouettes is definitely the show-stealer this season. l Men’s wear inspired looks: Another unique look that we saw this season was men’s wear inspired looks! A lot of designers used fab-
rics that are used for men’s wear to seek inspiration for women’s wear. Rajesh Pratap Singh’s pant suits and long coats for women and Namrata Joshipura’s selection were inspired by men silhouettes. l Layered looks: Both Pankaj &
Nidhi and Jaya Rathore used surface texturing across their collection. Pankaj & Nidhi with intricate quilting made the layered dresses look even more stunning l Athleisure and sports detailing: Another look that stood out
was athleisure and sports detailing. Designer Sanchita showcased an athleisure collection using elements of sports and technology, combining them with traditional silhouettes. Even the sports detailing by Chandrani Singh Fllora was very interesting and unique.

Rooting for robotic surgery
Calcium can ensure good night’s sleep
Robotic surgery has proved its efficacy in India and it is time for government intervention so that more people can opt for robot-assisted surgeries NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI
M
ulti-disciplinary robotic surgery has proved its efficacy in India in just five years and it is time for the government to step in to ensure that it benefits the masses, say top robotic surgeons. The intervention is needed so that more people can opt for robot-assisted surgeries to treat various medical conditions -including cancer. Such surgeries involve minimal blood loss, quick recovery, shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal life. “The Centre and state governments must provide robotic surgery units at premier institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), PGIs and 200 medical colleges across the country so that the benefits reach
Vegans may lack vital nutrient intake NEW YORK: Vegans need to guard against neurologic disorders, anemia, reduced bone strength and other health concerns as their diet may lack vital nutrient intake, a new study has warned. The US study points out that some vegans rely heavily on processed foods and may not eat a sufficient variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
The findings showed that a whole food, plant-based diet is commendable and a well-planned vegan diet can be adequate to achieve proper nutrition, but requires some education. Researchers recommend that healthcare providers monitor vegan patients for adequate blood levels of vitamin B-12, iron, ferritin, calcium and vitamin D. “We found that some of these nutrients, which can have implications in neurologic disorders, anemia, bone strength and other health concerns, can be deficient in poorly planned vegan diets,” said Heather Fields from Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Vegans consume strict plantbased diet that excludes all animalderived foods. With the growing popularity of plant-based diets, the researchers compiled a review to monitor and advise vegans to ensure proper nutritional intake.
the needy,” said Dr Mahendra Bhandari, CEO, Vattikuti Foundation, a US-based non-profit promoting robotic surgeries across the world, including India. In 2015, nearly 190 robotic surgeons in India performed over 4,000 procedures in the areas of urology, gynaecology, thoracic, pae-
diatrics, general surgery, head and neck and bariatric surgeries. “The government has the responsibility to ensure treatment to people who can’t afford private health care. I do believe that twofifths of Indians below the poverty line can’t be deprived of medical attention for long,” Dr Bhandari
told IANS. Robotic surgery is preferred over traditional laparoscopic techniques because robots operate in 360degree mode and can reach difficult-to-access parts -- such as stomach blood vessels -- with ease. Moreover, robotic suturing is far more accurate, causes less blood loss, sees faster recovery and leaves practically no scars. “Those undergoing robotic surgeries are back home in twothree days and return to normal activities within three weeks,” says Dr Arun Prasad, robotic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. The greatest impact has been in cancer surgery; it is now possible to remove tumors from almost any organ in the abdomen or chest with great precision and accuracy while saving normal and healthy tissues.
TOKYO: Calcium has been known long as good for our bones, but it might also be the key to a good night’s sleep, says a new study, unveiling a new theory how sleep works. The study showed that sleep depends on the activity of calcium inside neurons. Moreover, it was also revealed that a mechanism regulated by calcium ions is indeed responsible for controlling the sleep duration. The study, published in the journal Neuron, contributes to the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders like insomania and sleep apnea and other associated neuro-degenerative diseases.

malfunction and anticipate the occurrence of birth,” explained lead study author Gabriele Masselli from Sapienza University in Rome. To learn more, researchers used an MRI technique called diffusion-
weighted imaging (DWI) to examine pregnant women who had been referred for suspected fetal or placental abnormality. DWI has been increasingly used for abdominal and pelvic diseases, but has not been tested for the evaluation of the uterine cervix in pregnant patients. Each of the 30 pregnant women in the study had a sonographically short cervix and a positive fetal fibronectin test between 23 and 28 weeks of gestation. Of the 30 women, eight delivered within a week of the MRI examination. The other 22 delivered an average of 55 days later. “Our results suggest that MRI has emerged as a powerful imaging biomarker in evaluating patients with impending delivery,” the authors stated.

or mothers-to-be, going for an MRI of the cervix area can give more accurate results than ultrasound to predict if some women will give a preterm birth, say researchers. Early dilation of the cervix, a neck of tissue connecting the uterus with the vagina, during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery. Women in their second trimester of pregnancy with a cervix measuring 15 millimeters or less, as seen on ultrasound, are considered to be at higher risk of preterm birth. However, ultrasound has limitations as a predictor of preterm birth, as it does not provide important information on changes in cervical tissue in the antepartum phase just
before childbirth. “A better understanding of the process of antepartum cervical remodeling, loosely divided in two distinct phases called softening and ripening, is critical to improve the diagnosis of cervical
Overeating? Your brain cells may signal ‘stop eating’ IANS, NEW YORK

re you obese and still unable to control munching those gastronomical delights? Do not worry, scientists have identified brain cells that can send signals to stop over-eating, paving the way for potential new anti-obesity treatments. The study, conducted on mice, showed that when the cells fired and sent signals to other parts of the brain, the mice decreased the amount they ate in a day by about
25 percent. “When the type of brain cells we discovered fire and send off signals, our laboratory mice stop eating soon after,” said Richard Huganir, director at the Johns Hopkins University in the US. But switching off the satiety cells in the brain caused the mice to eat more, and double their weight in three weeks. The findings, published by the journal Science, adds significant detail to the way brains tell animals when to stop eating and, if con-
