In a talk at the silver jubilee function of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) here, Hagel referred to ties with China and said both India and the U.S. should “avoid traps of rivalry” in their ties with Beijing. He said he was looking forward to the next meeting of the defense framework agreement to replace the 10-year defense agreement that is due to expire next year. Hagel said there were several proposals that would transfer technology and production expertise to India, including a plan for the U.S. and India to co-produce and codevelop the Javelin anti-tank missile. rime Minister Narendra Modi told United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel that he looked forward to his visit to the U.S. in September that would provide “an opportunity to see how the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy can build a partnership for peace, stability and prosperity in the world”. “The prime minister welcomed the sustained high-level engagement by the United States with the new Government in India,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said. During the talks, Modi expressed

concern about the deteriorating situation in Iraq and its potential implications for the region, where India has vital stakes. Hagel briefed Modi on the announcements by President Obama on the steps that the US plans to take to deal with the situation, the statement said. Modi also noted that early completion of the presidential election process in Afghanistan and a smooth transition of power is essential for sustaining progress towards peace, stability, democracy and development in that country. They also discussed their shared interest in peace and stability in the wider Asia-Pacific region.

F

ormer United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in an interview published on August 10, blamed President Barack Obama’s faulty foreign policy for the rise of Islamic militants in both Syria and Iraq. Talking to the Atlantic monthly, Clinton used harsh words to describe the failure that resulted from Obama’s decision to stay on the sidelines during the first phase of the Syrian conflict, where the opposition has been trying to topple President Bashar al- Assad, Xinhua reported. “The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad — there were Islamists, there were secular-

ists, there was everything in the middle — the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which jihadists have now filled,” she said. Serving as the

top American envoy during Obama’s first term, Clinton is widely expected to make another run for the presidency and is seen as trying to distance herself from the president, whose foreign policy has been under sharp attack in recent months. The U.S. fighters and drones have launched air raids on targets of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in northern Iraq since Obama authorized the move to conduct humanitarian missions. Echoing some Republicans, Clinton said Obama lacked a strategy for confronting the threats posed by Islamic militants. “Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle,” she said.

Pakistan waging proxy war: Modi Prime Minister Modi says Pakistan is sponsoring a proxy war against India as it has lost the capacity to fight a conventional war; Islamabad denies the charge SHEIKH QAYOOM, LEH (JAMMU AND KASHMIR)

I

n his first attack on Islamabad after taking office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 12 accused Pakistan of waging a proxy war against India, saying this had killed more soldiers than the numbers killed in all wars since 1947. Making his second visit to Jammu and Kashmir in less than two months, Modi also vowed to take the country’s war against terrorism to “a logical conclusion”. Hopping from one venue to another before returning to the national capital, the prime minister announced `80 billion to build four major road projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Modi, who became prime minister in May, said Pakistan was sponsoring a proxy war against India as it

Jaswant Singh’s condition grave

NEW DELHI: Former union minister and expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh continued to be in coma on August 13, with doctors describing his condition as “grave”. A statement issued from the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) said Jaswant Singh was “still in coma. On ventilatory support. Vitals stable. Condition continues to be grave”. The statement added that he had fever, “transient hypotension” (low blood pressure) and his condition was “slightly worse than yesterday (August 12)”. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the former BJP leader on August 9. “Visited Jaswant Singh ji. Met his family and enquired about his health. I pray for his quick recovery,” Modi tweeted after meeting Jaswant Singh at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) here.

had lost the capacity to fight a conventional war. “We have lost more soldiers during the proxy war than the country has during the conventional wars fought with Pakistan,” he said, refer-

ring to Islamabad-backed terrorism in Kashmir and other parts of India. Modi was addressing officers and soldiers posted at Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield, at Leh, the capital of mountainous Ladakh.

Islamabad rejects Modi’s accusation

JAMMU: Pakistan Rangers on August 13 opened fire at Indian positions on the international border in Jammu district, an official said. “Pakistan Rangers violated ceasefire in Arnia area in R.S. Pura late on August 12 and today (August 13) morning,” a police officer told IANS here. The officer said the Pakistan Rangers targeted three Border Security Force (BSF) posts — Pital Post, Kaku-de-Kothae and Tent Post.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on August 13 rejected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusation of Islamabad waging a proxy war against India, terming the statement as “most unfortunate”. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said Prime Minister Sharif’s visit to India for Modi’s swearing-in was in the spirit of wanting to establish good neighborly relations with India. The visit “generated a fresh momentum in the bilateral relationship”.

He later interacted with the soldiers. He said his government was committed to making India self-reliant in defense manufacturing, building a strong armed forces, and equipping them with modern arms and

technology. Terrorism, he said, was a global problem and “all humanitarian forces of the world should unite to fight it. India is committed to strengthening and uniting these humanitarian forces”.

ongress chief Sonia Gandhi on August 12 attacked the Narendra Modi government, saying the communal violence in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were “created deliberately to divide our society”. The government rubbished the charges, and called them “baseless”. Speaking at the party headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, she said: “Incidents of communal violence, especially in some states of the north like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and some other states have increased in the 11 weeks since the new government came to power. “And it is something which is of great concern and worry to all of us. “During the UPA government, UPA I and UPA II, there were hardly any such incidents. But in a very short span, we have had nothing less than 600 communal violence incidents in UP and perhaps as many in Maharashtra. power all these communal incidents...,” she said. “...and what we believe and what is pretty clear in many instances is that these incidents are deliberately created to divide our society along religious lines,” Gandhi added. Her attack on the Centre came after her son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi slammed the government on the issue. He held an unprecedented noisy protest and also trooped to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s podium, demanding a debate on rising communal violence in Uttar Pradesh.

Apex court gets four new judges NEW DELHI: Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Justice R. Banumathi, Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant and senior advocate Uday Umesh Lalit on August 13 became the judges of the Supreme Court. They were administered the oath of the office by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha. With the four new judges, the existing strength of the apex court judges has gone up from 26 to 30. The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges. Before his elevation, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre was the chief justice of Gauhati High Court.

New gas price by end-September NEW DELHI: The government on August 13 said it will come out with a new natural gas pricing formula by end-September that would take into account the interests of investors and the public. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the Rajya Sabha that the NDA government had decided to review the gas pricing formula keeping in mind pub-

lic interest and the recommendations of the concerned Standing Committee of parliament. The new formula will be announced by September 30, the minister said replying to questions in the upper house. The existing gas price under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) was approved in 2007 and was to remain valid up to March 2014. Supreme Court now has 30 judges

Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad assured members that the government does not have any intention of interfering in the functioning of the judiciary. The law minister also moved an amendment to change the number of the constitution amendment bill from 121st to 99th, which was passed by the house. While the judicial appointments commission bill was passed by a voice vote, the constitution amendment bill was passed after a division, with 376 members voted in its favor. It is necessary for a constitution amendment bill to pass by a twothirds majority. The bills will now have to be passed by the Rajya Sabha before they are sent to the president for his assent, after which they become acts. The two bills seek to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges and set up a commission for this. The bills propose that the Chief Justice of India will head six-member National Judicial Appointments Commission, other members of which would be the law minister, two senior Supreme Court judges and two eminent people. A collegium comprising the prime minister, the chief justice of India and the leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha will select the two eminent people. One eminent person will be nominated from among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, minorities or women.

Will Priyanka say yes to politics?

Priyanka Gandhi’s supporters turn to her when it seems clear that neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor vice president Rahul Gandhi is the answer to the organization’s travails AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

here is little doubt that by declining to join “active” politics, Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra will not only cause huge disappointment to her growing body of supporters in the Congress, but may also undermine the party’s chances of revival. To her followers, she represents the last and perhaps only hope of the party’s recovery following its demoralizing defeat in the AprilMay general elections. Accustomed to looking only at the Nehru-Gandhi family to lead them, Priyanka’s supporters evidently turned to her when it seemed abundantly clear that neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor vice president Rahul Gandhi was the answer to the organization’s travails. While Sonia Gandhi has been largely spared any direct criticism, except from writers of books on current affairs, Rahul Gandhi has been the target of considerable carping, ranging from being called a “joker” to being surrounded by rootless wonders with little understanding of Indian politics. However, there was a suggestion that both mother and son should take a two-year sabbatical, an unusual observation in a party which has acquired the reputation of being run like a feudal household with its retinue of servile courtiers. This was also the closest any party member had ever come to saying that Sonia Gandhi was not the answer to the party’s problems and that the organization could perhaps be better off if she kept out of the way for some time along with her darling son.

In this depressing context, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra aroused the most expectations. The reasons have long been obvious. Between the three — mother, son and daughter — Priyanka has been seen as the most naturally endowed with leadership qualities in being articulate and, most importantly, without any hangups in the matter of reaching out to the peo-

In a strange way, Priyanka combines the personal charisma of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, without the former prime minister’s intimidating regal presence ple. Because of her open, extrovert nature, party cadres and ordinary people felt at ease in her company. In a strange way, she combined the personal charisma of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, without the former prime minister’s intimidating regal presence. Rahul Gandhi, unfortunately, does not have any of these qualities. He not only appears to be a reluctant politician as his poor record of attendance in parliament and prolonged periods of absence from the country showed his aloofness inhibited even Congressmen from approaching him, let alone the ordinary people. Some of his ideas have also seemed woolly. His charge, for

instance, that most of the parties are run by a few has never been taken seriously because he himself belongs to perhaps the most exclusive of such coteries.

Notwithstanding his inability to provide inspirational leadership, it can seem odd that Sonia Gandhi insisted on pushing him to the forefront, even egging him on to be

aggressive when he barged into the well of the Lok Sabha to protest against the speaker’s conduct. If anyone was looking for signs of confirmation of Sonia Gandhi’s wish to pass the baton to her son, that uncharacteristic intervention in parliament was the moment. It is probably not a coincidence that within two days of the incident, Priyanka announced her intention to stay away from active politics, which virtually amounted to her “retirement”. The haste may have been occasioned by the announcement by a relatively unknown Congress spokesperson that all three members of the dynasty will be in the leadership. There have also been reports that Priyanka may be made general secretary in charge of the party in Uttar Pradesh. These statements probably reflected the wishful thinking of Priyanka’s supporters rather than any decision taken by the party. But, arguably, the Congress president did not want the speculations to spread any further. There are several reasons for putting a lid on the rumors. One is that Rahul’s image will suffer if there is a clamor for Priyanka to play a major role. As the former Congressman, Natwar Singh, has said in his autobiography, Rahul does not have “fire in the belly”. Another reason why all the gossip had to be scotched is the close personal relations between brother and sister. Priyanka evidently realized that if she is pushed to the forefront by a section of the party men, a rift cannot but appear between the siblings which will be highly distressing for everyone in the family.

India celebrates Raksha Bandhan IANS, NEW DELHI

R

aksha Bandhan, a festival that marks the bond of love between brothers and sisters, was celebrated throughout the country with traditional fervor and enthusiasm on August 10. Sisters express their unstinting love and affection for their brothers whereas the latter reaffirm lifelong protection and security to their sisters. Across the city, tens of thousands of young and older women tied rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, receiving gifts in return. “My brother surprised me this time and came home for rakhi. I am super excited,” Rashmi Soni, a 25-year-old living in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi, told IANS. Her brother gifted her a new

mobile phone. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the Shravan month of Hindu calendar. Women in the capital got free rides in public buses Sunday. Delhi Metro ran extra trips to cater to the rush of commuters. In many instances, women used online web sites to send their love to their brothers. “There were lots of online portals with gift hampers. I am glad my rakhi has reached my brother in Patna on time,” Kavita Shah, 30, told IANS. Even on Sunday, women and men thronged shops to do last minute purchases of sweets, gifts and rakhis. Women from different walks of

life, including widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, tied rakhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Schoolchildren and specially-abled children as well as women MPs from Gujarat also tied him rakhi, an official statement said. Iraq’s new PM calls for unity Haider al-Abadi asks for cooperation of allied nations to fight the jihadists IANS, BAGHDAD

P

rime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi has urged Iraqis to stand united in fight against the jihadists, while controversial incumbent Premier Nuri al-Maliki still refused to say whether he is willing to step down to put an end to the political crisis. Abadi, named on August 11 to form a new government, said that defeating terrorism is his chief priority because it directly threatens the conflict-torn country. The former deputy speaker called on all political movements to believe in the constitution and in the democratic political process and to sit down together, not to form a government, but to develop a national determination to deal with our problems. He also asked for the cooperation of allied nations and international organizations to fight the jihadist Islamic State (IS). Abadi, whose nomination was welcomed by the U.S. and Iranian governments, received congratulations on August 12 from Saudi Ara-

US sends more military advisers to Iraq

LONDON: Three British Royal Air Force (RAF) surveillance aircraft landed at an air base in Cyprus on August 12 to carry out aid drops to Iraqi Yazidi refugees on a mountain top. RAF Tornado jets landed at Cyprus’s Akrotiri air force base after dusk. A statement issued by British Prime Minister’s office said the Tornados could use their excellent surveillance capacity to gather better situational awareness to help with humanitarian efforts.

WASHINGTON: At least 130 additional U.S. military advisers have arrived in Iraq to help with the humanitarian aid in northern Iraq, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said. Hagel announced in California that the new detachment arrived on August 12 in Erbil. The troops were there to “take a closer look and give a more in-depth assessment of where we can continue to help the Iraqis”, Hagel said. They were not there for combat, he added.

bia’s King Abdullah. President Fouad Massoum, a Kurd, turned to Abadi a day after Maliki said he was suing the head of state for failing to nominate him for a third term as prime minister. Maliki’s Dawa party got the largest number of seats in April elections, but the broader Shiite coalition of which it is a part, the Iraqi National Alliance, has soured on the premier, whose rule has alienated many Sunnis and Kurds. Abadi, himself a member of Dawa, extended an olive branch to Maliki on August 12, praising his efforts to combat terrorism and build the Iraqi state, and assuring him he will continue to be a “brother, comrade and key partner” in the political process. Meanwhile, Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops carried on their battle against IS militants on August 12. Over 80 IS combatants were killed in Iraqi air strikes. The air strikes were aimed at “important” IS positions near the northern city of Mosul, the security chief of Nineveh province, Mohammed al-Bayati.

Ebola: No panic among Indians in WA ACCRA: There is no panic movement out of West Africa by Indian nationals living in the region following the spread of the Ebola virus disease, officials of the Indian missions in Nigeria and Ghana have confirmed to IANS. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that a total of 1,848 cases have been reported with 1013 deaths in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone between August 7 and 9. So far, Guinea has recorded 506 cases with 373 deaths, Liberia 599 cases with 373 deaths, Nigeria 13 cases with two deaths and Sierra Leone 730 cases with 315 deaths. “There have been a few calls from people who were anxious about the disease, whilst others have expressed the desire to leave Nigeria, but there has not been any urgent need to move out,” Sharad Srivastava, first secretary in the Indian High Commission in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, said. The mission in Abuja is also accredited to Benin, Cameroun and Chad. “Nobody is packing out and we do not have any information from other countries - that we are accredited to showing that there is any panic among the Indian community,” T.J. Suresh, information counsellor of the Indian high commission in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, said.

Letter found in Osama’s hideout warns of IS brutality IANS, LONDON

A

letter found at slain Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan warned of the rise of a new Islamic extremist group capable of extreme brutality that could damage Al Qaeda’s reputation, media reported on August 12. The 21-page letter, written by one of Bin Laden’s senior officials in 2011, claimed the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), has complete disregard for civilian life, the Daily Mail reported. According to the letter, the IS’s barbaric acts include the use of chlorine gas as chemical weapon, bombing mosques, crucifixions and beheadings. The letter said that the IS was simply too extreme even for the group that killed thousands in the 9/11 attacks. Today, the IS has become a powerful force that has control of areas in Iraq and Syria larger than Great Britain. Its trademark black jihadi flag has fluttered in the background of “promotional” videos of executions, including crucifixions and beheadings.

The ‘caliphate’ the Islamic state has claimed to have established, represents the biggest shift in the political geography of the Middle East since the borders of modern Iraq and Syria were drawn under the Sykes-Picot agreement between Britain and France in 1916. The IS was founded by 43-yearold Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, a cleric held prisoner for four years by American troops in Iraq. The leader, a Sunni Muslim who despises the Shia-run Iraqi government, now commands more than 10,000 fighters, many of whom are former Saddam Hussein-era soldiers or disenchanted Sunnis who lost power and influence after the fall of the dictator’s regime. The group is estimated to have amassed a staggering £1.2 billion. It has even sold 8,000-year-old antiquities it has seized.

Sharif refuses to come under pressure ISLAMABAD: In a televised address to the nation on August 12, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rejected demands for his resignation and reiterated that his government will complete five-year constitutional term. Sharif’s remarks came at a time when opposition leader Imran Khan was demanding his resignation as he claimed that last year’s elections were rigged, Xinhua reported. The announcement came just one day ahead of the protests planned by Imran Khan and influential cleric Tahirul Qadri. The Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) had won the parliamentary elections in May last year. Khan has planned an anti-government march Aug 14 in Islamabad. He said his supporters will not end protests unless Sharif resigns. The prime minister also announced formation of a Supreme Court commission to investigate the allegations of rigging in last year’s polls.

Sushma takes part in ASEAN foreign ministers meet NAY PYI TAW (MYANMAR): Tensions in the South China Sea figured in talks between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her counterparts from the region, with the Philippines minister elaborating on the country’s three-stage resolution of territorial disputes in that sea. At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting here, the Philippines’ Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario presented a proposal meant to reduce tension in the South China Sea. The Philippine proposal appealed to the ASEAN to call for cessation of activi-

ties that escalate tension in the sea. It asked the ASEAN and China to manage tensions further by working for the effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

Eight militants killed in Afghan clashes

India, Lanka to free fishermen quickly

KABUL: At least eight militants were killed and 11 others injured in a military operation in eastern Afghanistan, authorities said on August 12. “Afghan security forces conducted a night operation and battled the militants in Chak district in eastern Afghan province of Wardak killing eight militants, including five Pakistani militants,” Xinhua quoted a provincial government statement as saying. The foreign militants came from the Maidan Shar province, 35 km west of Kabul, the statement said. Three Afghan Taliban local leaders named Mullah Hahad, Mullah Hamdullah and Mullah Muhib were among the dead.

NEW DELHI: The Indian and Sri Lankan Coast Guards have agreed to work for the speedy release of fishermen arrested for violating the maritime boundary, the government said. Defense Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha that the directors general of the Coast Guards of the two countries met in New Delhi June 25. The major issues discussed included training and cooperation on maritime search and rescue, maritime pollution response, conduct of joint maritime exercises and speedy release of arrested fishermen. Sri Lanka frequently arrests Indian fishermen who stray into its waters.

High-powered diplomacy for Modi Come September and PM Modi will have a packed diplomatic schedule. Prime Minister has bilateral meetings fixed with the leaders of China, Australia, Japan and US IANS, NEW DELHI

S

eptember is set to be a very busy foreign policy month for the Narendra Modi government, with five high-priority visits — incoming and outgoing — on the anvil, including President Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Vietnam — his first abroad under the new dispensation. The beginning of the month will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking off to Japan for the annual bilateral meeting, during which the civil nuclear talks will be very much on the table. The prime minister heads to the U.S. at the end of the month for his summit meeting with President Barack Obama. Before he embarks for the U.S., India will have two important foreign guests — Chinese President Xi Jinping in the middle of the month and before that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott. In between these, President Mukherjee travels to Vietnam, taking forward the Modi government's policy of connecting with the immediate and extended neighborhood. Ahead of the presi-

dent’s visit, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Vietnam by August-end to lay the groundwork for the presidential visit. Vietnam's most powerful leader Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Vietnam Communist Party, was in India on a state visit last November during which he had invited India to look for oil and gas in the South China Sea. Earlier this month, an Indian warship took part in exercises with the Vietnamese navy in the tense waters of the South China Sea whose sovereignty is claimed by China. A naval flare-up between the

two countries in the disputed waters led to riots in Vietnam, which saw many Chinese-owned factories attacked and Chinese nationals being killed. India had voiced concern over the South China Sea tensions and stressed that “freedom of navigation in the South China Sea should not be impeded”

and urged for cooperation to ensure the “security of sea-lanes and strengthening of maritime security”. Ironically, the Chinese president will be in New Delhi just after President Mukherjee returns from Vietnam. During Tony Abbott's visit, India and Australia are likely to ink the civil nuclear agreement, for which negotiations are complete. Inking of the agreement will pave the way for uranium imports from Australia, making it one of India's top

strategic partners. Australian Prime Minister Abbott is scheduled to visit India September 3, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his first visit to Japan. Modi is scheduled to visit Australia for the G-20 summit in November. India is also keen to ink the civil nuclear deal with Japan. In her bilateral meeting with her Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in Myanmar, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had conveyed that India is “very keen” to conclude negotiations on the bilateral civil nuclear deal.

After unfurling the Tricolor, Modi will address the nation. On arrival at Lahore Gate of Red Fort, the Prime Minister will be received by Defense Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Defense Rao Inderjit Singh and Defense Secretary RK Mathur. The Defense Secretary will introduce the General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, Lt. Gen Subroto Mitra to the Prime Minister. The GoC Delhi Area will then conduct the Prime Minister

to the Saluting Base where a combined Inter-Services and Police Guards will present general salute to the Prime Minister. Thereafter, Narendra Modi will inspect the Guard of Honor. The Guard of Honor contingent for the Prime Minister will consist of one officer and 24 men each from Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police. The Guard of Honor will be positioned directly in front of the National Flag across the moat below the ramparts. Build a new India, says PM Modi Wearing his trademark white half-sleeve kurta pyjama with a polka-dotted orange turban, Narendra Modi asked the people to give up the ‘poison’ of casteism and communalism KAVITA BAJELI-DATT, NEW DELHI

I

n his maiden Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to work for a new and clean India by shedding the “poison” of communalism and making the country the world’s manufacturing hub. In his maiden Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to work for a new and clean India by shedding the “poison” of communalism and making the country the world’s manufacturing hub. Addressing tens of thousands of cheering people gathered at the Red Fort complex on a bright morning, Modi spoke for over an hour, focussing mainly on nation building and underlining the need to forge national consensus on major issues. In the process, Modi, 63, who took charge of India May 26, outlined his vision for the country, frankly admitting the faults within and calling on neighboring countries to team up with India to battle poverty. He also announced a burial of the Planning Commission, saying it was not needed any more. He said a new institution will take its place. For the first time in years, there was no reference to Pakistan in the Independence Day address. Indeed, he made no mention to

any other country except neighboring Bhutan and Nepal which he recently visited. Indians, he said, needed to give up the “poison” of casteism and communalism and added it was a shame that these plagued India even so many years after independence. “How long will this continue?” he asked, sounding emotive. “We have fought enough, we have killed enough. Turn back and see, has anyone gained anything?” He said decades of bloodshed had caused deep wounds to “Bharat Mata”, adding there should be no violence for 10 years. Wearing his trademark white half-sleeve kurta pyjama with a

polka-dotted flaming orange turban, Modi reached the 17th century Red Fort after paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Before beginning the speech, Modi — in a departure from convention — took salute from the armed forces. He spoke mostly extempore, occasionally looking down for a peek at his notes. Asking the world to “Come, Make in India!”, Modi urged global investors to make this country a manufacturing hub. “I tell the world, Make in India! Sell anywhere but manufacture here. We have the skill and talent.” He said it should be every Indian’s dream to see “Made in India” products around the world -- green

friendly and with zero defects. Reiterating his dream to make India a clean place, Modi asked: “Do we want to live in filth?” He said India should become clean and hygienic by 2019 -- the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a staunch believer in cleanliness. Modi made special reference to women’s safety and the girl child. Despairing over India’s skewed sex ratio, he told Indians to end female foeticide. “I appeal to parents not to sacrifice the girl child.” Modi added: “Our heads hang in shame when we hear news about rape.” Dubbed by critics as a divisive personality, the prime minister

underlined the need to take everyone along. “Let us walk together, think together, and make a determination to take ahead the nation together.” Lending a personal touch, the prime minister hailed Indian democracy for allowing a person from “a poor family, an ordinary family” to assume the country’s top post. “I stand before you today not as the prime minister but as the Pradhan Sevak (Chief Public Servant).” The remark, made at the start of his speech, drew thunderous applause. Modi also called himself “an outsider to Delhi. But an outsider came to Delhi and got an insider view (of the administration)”. Modi has announced a financial inclusion mission to mark India’s 68th Independence Day and extend banking, credit, insurance and pension services to all households. Named as “Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana” or Prime Minister’s People’s Wealth Mission, it will provide two bank accounts, at least, to every household and an insurance scheme for the poor, among other numerous benefits. “We want to integrate the poorest of the poor people with bank accounts,” the prime minister announced during the course of his I-Day speech from the historic Red Fort here.

Signs of economic revival visible in the country: President IANS, NEW DELHI

E

xpressing concern over rising food prices, President Pranab Mukherjee on August 14 said that the Indian economy nonetheless was showing signs of revival and higher growth was on the horizon. “Signs of revival are visible,” the president said in his customary televised address to the nation a day prior to the country’s 68th Independence Day. “Our external sector has strengthened. Fiscal consolidation measures are beginning to show results. Notwithstanding occasional spurts, inflation has started moderating,” he said. “The stage is now set for our economy to move on a high growth trajectory of 7-8 percent, which is essential to ensure the availability of adequate resources for equitable development.”

President Pranab Mukherjee in his customary televised address to the nation on August 14.

President Mukherjee said even though the Indian economy grew

at an average 7.6 percent in the past decade, and the expansion was sub-

dued at 5 percent in the past two years, he still saw optimism.

“I sense renewed vigor and optimism in the air,” he said. He said India’s external sector had strengthened, fiscal measures were beginning to show results, inflation had started moderating, employment had increased and manufacturing was the rebound. “However, food prices still remain a matter of serious concern. Record food grains production last year helped agriculture sector to grow at a healthy 4.7 percent.” Greeting the people ahead of IDay, the president also said India was still young at 68 and therefore had the will, energy, intellect, values and unity to claim the 21st century. “The vision to win the battle of freedom from poverty is set. The journey will seem formidable only to those without conviction. As an old saying goes, ‘Sidhir Bhavati Karmaja’, which means, success is born of action.”

xactly 157 years after they were pushed into a well by the British rulers, the remains of 282 martyrs from the first war of independence in 1857 which were dug up from a well in Punjab’s Ajnala town this year were paid their last respects on August 1. The remains were dug up from the “Kalian wala khu” (well of the blacks), now referred to as the “shaheedan wala khu” (well of the martyrs), at Ajnala near Amritsar. The victims, mostly Indian soldiers in the British Army who had rebelled, were mercilessly pushed

into the well and killed after being covered with soil by British troops. An all-faith prayer service was held to pay tributes to the martyrs at Ajnala town. Scores of people attended the event. These included historians, eminent locals and members of the Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj. “Tributes were paid to the martyrs whose remains were recovered from the well,” said historian Surendra Kochhar, who was actively engaged with the digging process in February this year. Following three days of digging, the volunteers recovered 90 skulls, 170 jaws, over 5,000 teeth and hundreds of bones.

Scores of volunteers, including men, women, children and even the elderly, were engaged in digging the well, located inside the premises of Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj at Ajnala. Other things recovered included coins of the British times, gold items and medals. The gurdwara had come up at the site as a tribute to the martyrs. The martyrs were troops comprising Indians from the 26th Bengal Native Infantry posted at Mian Mir cantonment near Lahore who revolted against the British and were marching towards Ajnala after hearing reports of the mutiny in Meerut and other places in 1857.

The remains were dug up from the ‘Kalian wala khu’ (well of the blacks), now called ‘shaheedan wala khu’ well of the martyrs.

These soldiers, numbering about 500, had dared to challenge the British empire by killing two British officers near Lahore. The then British deputy commissioner of Amritsar, Fredrick Cooper, ordered action against the troops. While many were killed, 282 were captured and brought to

Ajnala. Here, many were killed and thrown into the well while others were pushed into it alive. A 10-foot layer of soil was put on them. The gurdwara committee and others involved in the excavation said a suitable memorial and a museum would be built at the site to honor those who laid down their lives for the country.

s Delhi gears up to welcome a team from Unesco in September to evaluate the national capital’s bid for the World Heritage City tag, an NGO spearheading the move says this idea should have been proposed earlier and reveals how “frustrating” it can be to negotiate with different government bodies. “Delhi should have been nominated for the World Heritage City tag a long time ago, but the problem is that these things require a lot of time and effort. And, unfortunately, most of the officials think of these things as a headache and not about national pride,” INTACH Delhi Chapter convener A.G.K. Menon told IANS. The Delhi chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is involved in several conservation projects in the national capital. “We are not blaming different bodies because they have to fol-

Part of it will function as a hostel for two to five years,” the official added. “It will be comfortable for students because classes would be held at the nearby convention hall of the state government,” the official also added. Rajgir attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. It is the second-most visited tourist place in the Buddhist circuit in Bihar after Bodh Gaya, considered the birthplace of Buddhism, where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment over 2,500 years ago. low certain procedures, but what happens, at times, is that these bodies don’t even communicate with each other. So we act as interlocutors and communicate, but these negotiations take time and sometimes can be difficult,” Menon told IANS. Despite the bureaucratic hurdles, Menon took up the task to have Delhi inscribed in Unesco’s list of World Heritage Cities. The decision will be announced in June 2015. On behalf of the Delhi government, INTACH prepared a 367page mini bible on the capital, contending it is a city of “Outstanding Universal Value”. Menon and his team of researchers compiled the voluminous dossier, which follows Unesco’s stringent submission guidelines, in three years. It is substantiated with doublespread photographs and the necessary documentation and maps. The two specific areas listed in it are: Shahjahanabad in old Delhi, which has Mughal-era her-

itage, and Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone (LBZ) in New Delhi. The argument INTACH is making is that Delhi is an outstanding example of an imperial city encompassing two stages in the Indian subcontinent’s history: the peak of the Mughal Empire and apogee of British rule. “We chose these sites because their respective rulers at that time chose to leave their earlier capitals and made these two sites their new capitals,” said Menon. He further said that Delhi is also the city that has three World Heritage Sites — Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and the Red Fort. To increase awareness about heritage and conservation, Menon feels children are the best target audience. “Children are the best target audience to generate awareness about heritage,” Menon contended. “Preservation is still not a priority for people. eglected by civic and state authorities all these years, both the union and Uttar Pradesh governments are now competing to clean up and develop Varanasi, now represented in parliament by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Minister of State for Tourism Sripad Naik announced here that Varanasi was on top of the Modi government’s agenda and that results will show up soon. He said `177 million has been released to beautify and maintain Varanasi’s famed ghats along the Ganga. “The priority is to ensure that the ghats retain their heritage look and are clean. Pilgrims must get due facilities,” Naik told IANS. Six of the ghats have been hand-

ed over to NGO Sulabh International to ensure cleanliness and for maintenance, officials said. Round-the-clock work is on at the Varanasi Cantonment railway station as part of New Delhi’s mission to upgrade 24 railway stations across India. The flooring of the stairs are being changed from concrete to granite, platforms are getting a new face, new eateries are opening and the waiting rooms are being spruced up. A sum of `125 million was released in July for the initial upgrade. Naik said the central government was committed to promoting religious tourism. A sum of `1billion

had been earmarked, while `5 billion has been given to promote the Buddhist circuit. Varanasi Mayor Ram Gopal Mohile told IANS that the Prime Minister’s Office was taking deep interest in the development of Kashi — as Varanasi has been known. “Very soon the wheels of development will begin moving faster,” the minister said. Uttar Pradesh’s Akhilesh Yadav government has also begun a major exercise to make its present felt in the temple town. Meetings have taken place to fast-track development work. Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan held a high-level meeting in Lucknow last week and gave officials in Varanasi “timelines” to complete projects. Taking a cue from Modi’s plans to clean the Ganga, the state government has taken up the Varuna river here as the center of its development matrix, an official said.

T

he widows of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh will send 1,000 hand-made, colorful rakhis and sweets to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made his debut into the Lok Sabha from this holy city, an NGO said. Hundreds of old widows who are spending the twilight years of their lives in ashrams here will send rakhis to their “new brother”, an official of Sulabh International said. Among these, a dozen-odd widows, all in their 80s, in Birla and Durgakund ashrams are presently engaged in making the rakhis. Also, a group of Nepalese elderly widows in Meera Sahabhagi and Chetan Vihar ashrams are busy in rakhi making. They started in the last week of July and have so far prepared around 500 such sacred bands that a sister ties on the brother’s wrist on the occasion of rakhi. “We have planned a target of sending around 1,000 rakhis to our prime minister,” said a 80year-old widow of Birla ashram.

The widows will also tie rakhis to local saints and brahmins to mark the occasion, Sulabh spokesman Madan Jha told IANS. In places like Varanasi and Vrindavan, hundreds of widows lead an isolated life and often live in small rooms in narrow alleys. In the absence of family support, they spend most of their time praying and looking for food. After the death of their husbands, widows at times face humiliation and insult from the family. They are asked not to be present on auspicious functions in the family. They are also not supposed to wear colored clothes or ornaments. “My idea is how to change thoughts, behavior and attitude of people of this country towards widows of India who are their mothers, sisters...,” said Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International. Nearly 900 widows and some 200 children from various schools of Delhi and Mathura-Vrindavan will take part in rakhi celebration at Meera Sahabhagini ashram on August 9.

he central government has assured TRS MPs that the Home Ministry’s directive for special powers to Telangana governor for maintaining law and order will be kept in abeyance. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has agreed to convene a meeting with the MPs from the state on August 18 to resolve the issue. “He has assured that till then, the orders will be kept in abeyance,” Vinod Kumar, one of the MPs of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) told reporters after a meeting with Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The MPs met the minister after raising issue in the Lok Sabha. They urged the central government to withdraw the directive, granting special powers over law and order in Hyderabad to the governor. TRS MP booked for sedition HYDERABAD: TRS Lok Sabha member K. Kavitha, who is also the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, has been booked on sedition charges for an alleged controversial statement on Jammu and Kash-

mir. On the direction of a city court, a first information report (FIR) was registered against Kavitha, a Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Lok Sabha member from Nizamabad, at the Madannapet police station.

Andhra Pradesh Bifurcation Act 2014, Vinod Kumar said the legislation merely mentions the governor will have special powers to deal with any hate crime. “But the central government has given powers to the governor to call for reports from police, even post and transfer police officials,” the MP said, reiterating this was against the spirit of federalism. The home ministry last week communicated to the Telangana government that the governor will have the final say in all matters of law and order, including transfer of top police officers in greater Hyderabad area. It also suggested 13 norms. The TRS government, however, refused to implement the norms saying the governor has to act on the advice of the council of ministers. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao also sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to withdraw the orders.

BJP condemns KCR’s remarks HYDERABAD: Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Aug 10 condemned Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s description of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “fascist”. Speaking to reporters, Naidu asked Rao — widely known as KCR — to withdraw his remark. Naidu took strong exception to the comment by the chief minister while criticizing the central government’s directive to handover to the governor powers for maintaining law and order in Hyderabad. Naidu said Rao had given a new definition to “fascism”.

oa chief minister Manohar Parrikar on August 12 advised a theatre director who has received death threats by phone to switch off his mobile phone or change his SIM card. “The problem will be over,” Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly while blaming the media for inciting “cockfights”. Parrikar was referring to a local Konkani play Akantvadi Goeant Naka which was staged by director Tousif de Navelim under tight security last weekend. Tousif had claimed that he received 190 threat calls over several days before the play, whose theme was against communal outfits.

tudents seeking admissions or already studying in professional colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are caught in a crossfire between the two Telugu-speaking states engaged in a bitter row over reimbursement of fees. While the Supreme Court’s direction early this week to complete admissions in engineering colleges by August 31 came as a relief to the students, the lack of clarity over fee reimbursement is still causing anxiety to thousands who passed Engineering, Agriculture and Medical

Common Entrance Test (EAMCET). Telangana’s decision to scrap the existing fee reimbursement scheme and to extend financial assistance to only those students whose parents were residents of Telangana as on November 1, 1956, has put many in a quandary. The two states are locked in a bitter wrangle over many issues since bifurcation in June, but the tussle over reimbursement of fee is proving serious as it involves the future of thousands of students. The Congress government in undivided Andhra Pradesh introduced a scheme in 2008 to reimburse the fee of students belonging

“If he switched off the phone, the problem would have been over... There are attempts being made to bring peaceful Goa to a boil,” Parrikar said, also referring to the director as “Tousif-Fousif”. Parrikar also promised to give a detailed account of the alleged threat calls received by Tousif during the ongoing monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly. With the play and the threats to Tousif making front page news for several days in some papers, Parrikar said that the media was encouraging a “cockfight” between two groups. Chandrasekhara Rao said many colleges and students exist on papers to claim the money. He instead introduced a new scheme called Financial Assistance to Students of Telangana (FAST) and made it clear that the government will not pay the fee of the students of other state (Andhra Pradesh) studying in Hyderabad. Under FAST, only those students will be treated as locals whose parents were residents of Telangana in 1956 when Telangana was merged with then Andhra State.

ollywood actor Bipasha Basu, who decided to refrain from promoting Humshakals prior to its release, says she won’t work with Sajid Khan, the film’s director, ever again. Bipasha, who was seen as one of the six key characters in the comic film which wasn’t received well, has nothing against the film’s co-producers Vashu Bhagnani and Fox Star Studios. But she is glad she took a stand against promoting Humshakals when it was required. She had said she was “extremely disturbed by the end result” of the film and “didn’t know how to promote the film with all honesty”. Asked if she will work with Sajid again, Bipasha said here in an interaction: “No, I will never work with him.” “I have nothing against Vashu-ji and Fox Star Studios. They have put in so much money and I respect that. I love Vashu-ji, it’s just that I didn’t want to come to a podium

I did this film on the basis of trust. Anyone who has seen the film will understand why I didn’t promote it. “I was six minutes into it and I don’t know what I was doing in it,” The actor said of the movie, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, Ram Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Tamannaah Bhatia and Esha Gupta in the cast.

Bipasha Basu feels that the competition in filmdom is so cut throat that a feeling of insecurity creeps in. “This industry can make you insecure because it’s do or die for you all the time,” the actor told IANS. “If you are enjoying it, I know it’s rare, like me, you kind of sail through your 14 years peacefully. You never know that much time has passed. Also, I a m one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have an agenda,” added the 35year-old. Bipasha, who entered filmdom with 2001 hit Ajnabee, has worked in various genres like action thrillers Dhoom and Race, comedy No Entry and off beat drama Corporate and Lamhaa.

he canine-hero’s name in the list of actors in the credit titles comes first because that’s how Akshay Kumar wants it. This film tells you to love animals. It’s a simple straightforward premise structured around a comical plot about a gold-digger wastrel whose father leaves his billions to his dog. Playing the predatory retriever with an evil glint in his eye and wicked smirk on his face, Akshay Kumar has a ball in the film. He does a wickedly amiable mean act trying to poison, electrocute and drown the canine. Admittedly, the characters on screen seem to enjoy themselves more than the audience. Not that we don’t share their enjoyment. For a large part of the narration, Entertainment is fun to watch. The script is deftly and devilishly put together. If only writer-turned-co-director Sajid-Farhad did not trip over the cascade of word-play, the going would have been much

more pleasing. Lamentably every character speaks in a tumble of puns and word play, some of them painfully plodding and self-conscious. My most cringe-worthy ode to filmy word-play is, Aapna Sonakshi seena taan ke chal. Really, now. Where there are the saints there are also the Sinhas. The character played by the comically vibrant Krushna Abhishek crams in actors’ names

in every sentence. This would have been infuriatingly obtrusive in a film of a more serious nature. No such calamity befalls Entertainment. The biggest USP of the reasonably entertaining Entertainment is that it never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. In the hilarious opening, where in a product-endorsement spoof with Riteish Deshmukh, Akshay establishes his character as a rogue and a charlatan, the film hops skips and jumps through hilarious hoopla, sometime generating a reluctant laughter in the audience, at other times leaving you a little numbed by the fatuous flavor of the farce. Some scenes walk on thick ice, quite literally. The moral turningpoint for Akshay’s character vis-avis the canine happens in a scene spread out on a dangerously thin ice-bed. It defines what the film tries to achieve given its flimsy premise and nebulous moral ground. Tamannah has preciouslittle to do, and she does it not so well. — Subhash K. Jha

Post ‘24’, I was offered 3 similar roles: Mandira NEW DELHI: Actress Mandira Bedi, who delivered a power-packed performance as government agent Nikita Rai in 24, says the success of the TV series led producers to offer her three more such roles. Mandira returned to the fictional world on the small screen after nine years with 24, which marked Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor’s debut on television. “It was exciting. It was a character that I really enjoyed playing and I got three more roles (such as that) after that show. This means that people could only see me as a cop,” Mandira told reporters during a recent visit hereto open an apparel store.

MUMBAI: Actor Evelyn Sharma, who has thrice been approached for Bigg Boss, has praised the reality program as one of the most entertaining shows on Indian television but says she “can’t be stuck in one house for so long”. The eighth season of the show will soon go on air and the names of prospective contestants are already doing the rounds. Evelyn too has again been approached for the forthcoming season. However, she has turned it town. “I think ‘Bigg Boss’ is the most entertaining show on Indian television. However, I’m claustrophobic and I can’t be stuck in one house for so long. Plus, my new film start shooting soon so my dates too were becoming an issue,” she said in a statement. The actress, who is of half-Indian and half-German lineage, has been seen in films like From Sydney With Love, Nautanki Saala, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Issaq, Yaariyaan and Main Tera Hero.

The model-turned-actress was in the capital Sunday night, and when asked about her wedding plans, the 28-year-old said: “Oh my god! Ask me about ten years from now. Injured Shraddha gives heels a miss for catwalk NEW DELHI: Actor Shraddha Kapoor, who experienced a muscle pull on her leg while rehearsing for her upcoming film ABCD 2, gave towering heels a miss to walk as the showstopper for couturier JJ Valaya at the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) here. Criticism makes me work harder: Anil Kapoor MUMBAI: Actor-producer Anil Kapoor, whose career in the filmdom spans over three decades and who has garnered fame in Hollywood as well, says criticism motivates him to work harder and that’s why sometimes he waits for people to make fun of him or criticize him. The 57-year-old shared his thoughts while speaking at a panel discussion organized for the Hollywood film The Gentleman’s Wager here. “I told my friends that I wanted to be an actor and I was criticized and was made fun of. But whenever anybody makes fun of me or criticizes me, it motivates me more, inspires me more and makes me work harder,” Anil said here. “Sometimes I wait for people to make fun of me or criticize me because they don’t know what they are in for. It just makes me work much harder,” he added. The National Award winner started his career in 1979 with a small role in the film Hamare Tumhare and later gave successful films like Mashaal, Tezaab, Beta and Pukar.

CHICAGO’S SENIORS HAVE A GALA TIME BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- About 160 members of the Indian Seniors of Chicago met at Manav Seva Mandir, Benselville, IL on August 9 for the celebration of members’ birthdays, India’s Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtmi and an entertainment program. The meeting, which was conducted by Ashwin Dwivedi, started with prayers followed by Hanuman Chalisa after which Hira Patel presented the detailed accounts for July. Speaking on Independence Day, Sharad Shah narrated how the big day was celebrated in India and he also discussed Article 370 of the Indian constitution, a law that grants special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir. Manu Shah said that Raksha Bandhan was an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrated the love and duty between brothers and their sisters, and explained its significance.

AAFA research grant for Dr Vikas Anathy BY A STAFF WRITER

ERMONT -- The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has announced that Dr. Vikas Anathy is the 2014 recipient of its Sheldon Siegel Investigator Grant Award. The annual research award provides $20,000 a year for two years to selected projects that are highly rated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) but which it is unable to fund. These ‘bridge grants’ have been awarded by the AAFA for more than 30 years to help promising researchers continue their important work. Anathy is an assistant professor in the University of Vermont’s Department of Pathology. The Indian American educator earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the Madurai KamarajUniversity in India,

Dr Vikas Anathy

and completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Vermont.

His winning research proposal to AAFA, entitled “Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress Signaling in Allergen-Induced Airway Remodeling,” will help researchers better understand how allergens affect the lungs. “Long-term repeated exposure to allergens can trigger a cycle of repair and remodeling in the lungs leading to stiffness of the lungs and respiratory failure,” says Anathy. The AAFA is the only patient organization in the United States that funds basic science research for asthma and allergies, according to the organization. MMThe foundation’s research program is dedicated to enhancing the overall understanding of asthma and allergic diseases, developing improved treatments, and searching for cures.

Pramila vanquishes rivals to win primary

S

BY A STAFF WRITER

OUTH SEATTLE, WA -Immigration activist Pramila Jayapal not only won convincingly in the primary for state Senate seat 37 in South Seattle, Washington, on August 5 but also received more votes than all of her five opponents combined. The Indian American Democrat left four fellow Democrats and one Republican trailing in her wake, as she received 9,845 votes (52.59%), with Democrat and former teacher Louis Watanabe barely within shouting distance in second place with 3,120 votes (16.67%). The lone Republican candidate received 11.03% of the ballots, while three other Democrats polled 9.9%, 7.83% and 1.99%, respectively. If elected, says Jayapal, she would become the first South Asian elected to the Washington state Senate. Watanabe has the unenviable task of facing off against the prohibitive favorite in the November election, as the two top finishers, regardless of party, advanced. Jayapal, who had endorsements from Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and women’s advocate Gloria Steinem, and held a huge fundraising

edge over her opponents, was ebullient about her win. According to her, the keys to her victory were her 20 years as an activist and organizer for immigrants and human rights issues and endorsements from labor, environmental and women’s groups. “We also knocked on more than 18,000 doors. I don’t think the district has ever seen a campaign organization like this before,” she said. An attorney, Jayapal founded Hate Free Zone, which organized after the Septemebr 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to combat racially motivated bias and violence against Muslim and

Sikh Americans. She said many South Asians and Sikh Americans, including some young teenagers, volunteered for her campaign. In 2008, Hate Free Zone changed its name to OneAmerica to reflect its advocacy on broader issues related to immigration and social justice. She stepped down as executive director of the group more than two years ago to focus on national issues. Her work led her to being named among 14 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as White House Champions of Change in May 2013. Born in India and raised in India, Indonesia and Singapore, Jayapal is currently a fellow at the University of Washington School of Law and a former worker on Wall Street. The 37th District seat, which includes Southeast Seattle and Renton, became open when the incumbent, Democrat Adam Kline, announced he would vacate the post to spend more time with his family. Another Indian American, Satpal Sidhu, finished first in his primary for the Position 1 seat in District 42 in the statehouse race in northwest Washington and could become the first South Asian elected to the lower house in November.

songs and convetd their best wishes to ‘birthday boys and girls’. Suthar was also the master of ceremony for the entertainment program, calling in his typical style singers like Jayshree Sheth, Nalini Shah, Hira Patel, Sharad Shah, Sharmi Trivedi, Veena Mayani and Rajui Patel to render songs and himself crooned a film song. Manu Shah thanked Suthar and all the participants. For the celebration of the Independence Day, Rasik and Hema Janak, Madhu and Hemlata took out a procession holding the Indian Flag and sang a patriotic song gathered in front of the audience and gave Salami to the Indian National Flag. Vice-president Dr. Rasik Shah spoke on his book with Sharad Shah and Mayank Chhaya also praising the book. The members bade goodbye to each other but not before enjoying delicious food arranged for the occasion.

St. Louis shoe store looted

T. LOUIS (MO) -- A south St. Louis shoe store was looted on the night of August 11. The police said some 10 carloads of people smashed windows and looted the Shoe Carnival in the 3500 block of Bamberger at 11.54 pm. According to police, numerous items were taken from the store. Following the incident, there was broken glass, socks and shoes scattered around the floor of the store. The store was able to reopen, but south St. Louis residents are concerned that the crime will continue. “You don’t destroy businesses. That’s not going to accomplish anything. It’s only going to put a bad stigma on the neighborhood,” said one resident. “Everybody in the neighborhood is not bad. But you do have people who want to take advantage of the situation.” There is surveillance video from the store, but nobody has been arrested. A Radio Shack store two doors away was also targeted by looters, but they were not able to get inside.

ore than 10,000 Illinois residents who bought insurance through President Barack Obama’s health care law could have their coverage canceled if they don’t send citizenship and immigration documents to confirm their eligibility by Septmber 5. Federal officials say they are sending letters to approximately 10,300 Illinois consumers asking for their paperwork. The letters caution that coverage will end by September 30 without the documentation. The letters were sent in English and in Spanish. Illinois is on the top-10 list of states with unresolved cases. People living in the country illegally are not allowed to get coverage. Officials say the letters tell consumers with unresolved citizenship and immigration issues that they can upload their documents to the HealthCare.gov website, or mail them in.

Moreover, Modi has to prove his mettle when it comes to governing a country like India which is truly diverse’ the former federal minister added. Thirunavukkarasar was addressing a meeting organized by the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the Indian National Overseas Congress (I), US in Hicksville, New York on August 3. “Congress Party is in no hurry to get back to power. If unchecked, this trend could lead to divisiveness and chaos instead of unity and harmony. ‘Congress party is the only truly national party in the country that could bring all segments of the society together. We have the best network, political maturity and infrastructure in the country and we will introspect and bounce back sooner rather than later.’ John Joseph, president of Tamil Chapter, who chaired the meeting, said: “We should not count or rely on the failures of the BJP but rather our successful track record and the vision for the future”. Juned Qazi, president of the INOC (I), US, applauded the Tamil Nadu Chapter and its officials for keeping the congress flame alive in this part of the world by convening such meetings with visiting dignitaries on a regular basis.

George Abraham, chairman, requested the AICC secretary to take the message back to New Delhi that there shouldn’t be any further delay in restructuring the party machinery that had of late become very despondent to the man on the street. “If one writes to President Obama, you are certain to get a response. However, try writing to any Congress leader in the country, you may be met with silence. The situation has to change if we are to regain the favor of the people”, he added. Abraham presented a letter of recommendation from INOC (I), USA as input into the process of introspection and action plan that is undertaken by the AICC. PRINGFIELD (IL) -- Governor Pat Quinn has announced a plan to name the Illinois State Museum Building in Springfield after the late US Senator Alan Dixon. He initiated and is working with the Illinois General Assembly to pass a joint resolution making that designation official. “Alan Dixon served with distinction on the local, state and federal levels and was an integral part of our state’s history for four decades,” Governor Quinn said. “Naming this building in his honor will help serve as a reminder of his lasting legacy of public service and his dedication to the people of Illinois.” “This is a very fitting way to honor the career of Alan Dixon who served the residents of our state with honor and energy for decades. I will be proud to sponsor this resolution,” Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan said. “Alan Dixon’s legacy of bipartisanship, leadership and commitment to seeking the common good represents the best aspects of public service in our state and country,” Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said. The Illinois State Museum at 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield will be named the Alan J. Dixon Building of the Illinois State Museum upon passage of the joint resolution. Businessman sues brother-in-law over IIFA profits

Chetan “Jason” Shah

T

AMPA (FL) -- A Florida businessman of Indian origin is suing his brother-in-law, a noted Indian-American philanthropist, for robbing him of of his due profit share earned by hosting a Bollywood film award show. The ongoing legal dispute involving the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), US edition, has entered a contentious new phase. Plaintiff Chetan “Jason” Shah has accused his brother-in-law Kiran Patel, a philanthropist and healthcare entrepreneur, of fraudulently adding his name to IIFA host committee official documents and later cutting him out of his share of the profits, the report said. Shah, a Tampa Bay real estate professional, is suing Patel, who is credited as a top funder and organizer of the IIFAs, a series of Bollywood events held in Tampa Bay, Florida, in April. Shah maintains being the rightful founder of the American edition of the awards show, and claims that it was him who persuaded event organizers to bring IIFA’s first-ever show in America. He claims Patel and other IIFA principals conspired to cut him out of event organizing and profits. The four-day IIFA Weekend reportedly brought significant economic benefits to the Tampa Bay region. The event drew an estimated 30,000 visitors who generated over $26 million in total spending, according to a June 1 press release from the Visit Tampa Bay tourism organization. In a July 3 court filing, , Shah claimed Patel coerced him into signing a document late last year just as Shah was being rushed to the hospital for heart surgery. That document allowed Patel to negotiate a new deal with IIFA organizers that cut Shah out of any profits, Shah told the paper.

C

HICAGO (IL) -- The Hi n d u Ma n d i r o f L a k e County celebrated the birth anniversary of Sant Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ram Charitmanas, with utmost gaiety as it is also celebrated with lots of respect and honor to him all over the world. He is the Hindu poet-saint who is renowned for his devotion for Lord Rama and Hanuman. More than 100 devotees from different Indian communities gathered at the temple to revel the event and listen to the discourse on ‘Sant Tulsidas and his work’ given by wellknown preacher and speaker Pt Joshi Ji as a gift of tribute. The program was started by him with Lord Ram Parivar, Hanuman Ji and Sant Tulsidas Ji pujan. Special Archans were also performed for the welfare and prosperity of the society on this occasion. Melodious devotional songs were sung by Sangeetha Singh, Rita Patel, Atul Soni, and Avinash Kotagi. Prabhakar Joshi narrated to the devotees the life of Sant Tulsidas Ji. President Harsh Kumar honored a group of young and senior volunteers for their services and support to the temple. Finally, Pt, Joshi Ji spoke with a great amount of enthusiasm and devotion about the ‘importance and relevance of Ram Charitmanas in modern times and paid his tribute to the great Sant by enlightening devotees about his work and devotion. and act as role models to teach and inspire us to build our own personality and identification in life. Family is a basic unit of a society. A good and cultured family becomes a role model to the whole world. Sant Tulsi Das Ji very cleverly depicts the ideal roles of a father, mother, step-mothers, son, brothers, and wives, said Pt. Joshi Ji and added that the role of parents, teachers, and especially mother was great in making children cultured and become responsible citizens. Selfishness, greed, egoism, superiorcomplexity and lack of tolerance and sacrificing nature for others happiness ruins the close ties between the members of the family. In the real sense, Ram Charitmanas is an Achar Manas that has solutions to each and every problem of our lives.

G N I M O C P U

Pt. Joshi Ji further added that every speaker on any Indian holy scriptures, Vedas, and Puranas conclude their speech by quoting some examples from Rama Charitmanas as it comprises facts and information about any situation that happens in our lives. In addition, he said that for any great nation, the cordial, reliable, and trustworthy relationship between ruler and citizens is important. The greatest hero of Hinduism ever created by Sant Tulsidas Ji is Lord Rama--the ideal ruler who said that Rama is incomplete without his servants especially the most obedient Hanuman. If one follows any one value of any characters of Ram Charitmanas, he or she will definitely attain the ultimate goal of life. At the end, he blessed all the devotees for their health, wealth, and progress.

Team India’s

Nadal to decide on participation in US Open title

England win fourth Test in three days, leading the series 2-1

MAJORCA (SPAIN): Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is recovering from a wrist injury, said he will decide latest by august 16 whether he can take part in the U.S. Open to defend the title he won last year against Serb Novak Djokovic. “My dream is being there and I will work for it,” said Nadal, who added he planned to see his doctors in Barcelona Tuesday for final examinations that will determine if the slight fracture in his right wrist has healed, reports EFE. “If it has healed I’ll have to try and see how I feel when I train and Friday or at latest Saturday a decision will be made”, he said during the inauguration of a tennis and paddle club in his hometown, Manacor, on the island of Majorca on August 11. However, “time is short and we’ll have to wait and see if it is enough or not”, the nine-time Roland Garros champion and World No.2 said, referring to the beginning of the U.S. Open on August 25. — IANS

poor run continues IANS, MANCHESTER

T

he Indian batting crumbled against the gentle spin of Moeen Ali as England won the fourth Test by an innings and 54 runs inside three days at the Old Trafford on August 9, leading the series 2-1. India’s second innings lasted 43 overs before being bundled out for 161 runs against an England attack that was one man down in pacer Stuart Broad, who was taken to hospital after a shortpitched delivery from Varun Aaron broke his nose. Ali picked up four for 39 while pacers James Anderson and Chris Jordan got two wickets each. Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 367 runs in the first innings and opened up a huge lead of 215 runs. India, skittled out for 152 runs in the first

innings, were 33 for one at tea. India’s task of saving the Test got even tougher when they lost opener Murali Vijay (18) early on in their second innings. After play resumed, India’s batting collapsed like a pack of cards with five wickets going for just 13 runs. Gautam Gambhir (18), Cheteshwar Pujara (17), Ajinkya Rahane (1), Virat Kohli (7) and Ravindra Jadeja (4) all fell in a space of five overs as India slumped from 53 for one to 66 for six. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (27) tried to delay the inevitable and along with Ravichandran Ashwin (46 not out) helped India get past the 100-run mark. Dhoni became Ali’s fourth victim as he tried to hit him out but could only drag to Gary Ballance at mid-wicket. Ashwin watched wick-

ets tumbling. Earlier in the day, riding on a 134-run seventh wicket partnership between Joe Root (77) and Jos Buttler (70), England reached 367 for nine. After the English pair was dismissed just before lunch, 42 more runs were added. Chris Broad and Chris Woakes

India can still square the series ASHIS RAY, LONDON

A

fter two terribly disappointing cricket Test matches -especially the last one that ended at Old Trafford, Manchester Saturday, a 1-2 deficit in the series and only one more encounter yet to come, India have no alternative other than to pull out all stops in pursuit of squaring the series against England. It is, of course, easier said than done, but coach Duncan Fletcher has got to re-motivate his wards to make a final, face-saving effort. An overwhelming majority in the current Indian squad arrived in England this summer sans the scars of the 2011 whitewash. But after the reverse at Southampton and now the drubbing at Old Trafford, they are wounded as well. Yet, all is not lost. The present lot of Englishmen are not world beaters. If India get their act together in batting, including finding an answer to James Anderson (who may not be as incisive at The Oval as at Old Trafford and could also be tiring), turning the tables is not

(26 not out) tried to take on the Indian bowling to get runs quickly. After smacking two consecutive sixes of Varun Aaron, Broad was left bleeding when the Indian pacer’s short pitched ball crept inside the helmet. The English fast bowler had to be taken to hospital.

I would not pick Woods for Ryder Cup: Azinger IANS, LONDON

F

impossible. The Indians must, though, erase the memory of the last two tests, think of it as a bad dream and focus on what they did right in the second Test, which they won. At the Oval, wickets in August have historically been good for batting, except for a little life for quicker bowlers on the first morning and for spinners on the last

one-and-half days. India must gamble in order to try and level the contest. If they replace Ravindra Jadeja with a faster bowler — Ishant Sharma they would be well equipped for a wicket with a bit of grass and moisture, which the curator under guidance from the England and Wales Cricket Board could be persuaded to retain.

ormer U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Paul Azinger on August 10 said he would not pick Tiger Woods in this year’s event and feels that the 14-time major winner will rule himself out of the contest slated on September 23-28 at Gleneagles, Scotland. The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. Azinger led the United States to their only victory in the 21st century at Valhalla in 2008, when Woods was ruled out through injury. “I don’t see how you can take an injured player who is not playing well,” Azinger told the Golf Channel. “I don’t think I would. And also Tiger has not necessarily been the formula for success either. I just ready’, make Tom’s decision easier,” don’t see how you can pick him at said Azinger. this point.” Six-time major winner Nick “I am guessing he will call Tom Faldo thinks the era of Woods domand beg out of this and say ‘I am not inating the game is now finished.

Key molecule to treat heart failure found Researchers have discovered a molecule that provides the heart with a tool to block a key protein IANS, NEW YORK

T

here could soon be an effective treatment for heart failure and its prevention. Researchers have discovered a molecule that provides the heart with a tool to block a key protein that leads to heart failure. Named ‘Myheart’, the newly discovered non-coding RNA helps the heart to block BRG1, a protein that orchestrates genetic disruptions when the heart is subjected to stress, such as high blood pressure, the findings showed. “I think of Myheart (myosin

heavy-chain-associated RNA transcript) as a molecular crowbar that pries BRG1 off the genomic DNA and prevents it from manipulating genetic activity,” said Ching-Pin Chang, an associate professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the U.S. When the adult heart is subjected to significant stress such as high blood pressure or damage from a heart attack, the protein BRG1 begins altering the heart’s genetic activity, leading to heart failure. In mice with stress-induced high levels of BRG1, the researcher were able to restore Myheart to normal levels using gene transfer

technology. Restoring Myheart levels blocked BRG1 actions and prevented heart failure, they said. Although the results in mice would suggest testing Myheart against heart failure in humans, it is too large — by molecular standards — to be delivered as a drug, Chang said. The researchers now are working to identify smaller portions of the Myheart molecule that are key to its ability to block BRG1. Such a subsection of the Myheart molecule could lead to a compound to test in human trials. The study appeared online in the journal Nature.

‘Love hormone’ helps autistic kids NEW YORK: The “love hormone” oxytocin helps autistic kids improve social skills. Researchers from Stanford University have found that oxytocin has a tremendous effect on such kids’ ability to function socially. “Children blessed with naturally high levels of oxytocin are more savvy at communicating with others and interpreting social signals or situations,” said Karen Parker, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Stanford. The higher your oxytocin levels, the better your social functioning, Parker added. During the study, researchers

examined 79 children with autism. “All children with autism have social deficits but these deficits were worst in those with the lowest blood oxytocin levels and mildest in those with the highest oxytocin levels,” Parker said.
