Paradigm shift in US-India ties Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with US President Obama helped reignite US business interest in India, say experts IANS, NEW DELHI
D
id Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s summit meeting with US President Barack Obama in September signal a paradigm shift in bilateral ties? Was it a ground-breaking moment in Indo-U.S. ties that had seen a slump over the years? Experts, including former diplomats, do not think it was a paradigm shift, but agree the visit was trend-setting and helped reignite US business interest in India. Former foreign secretary Lalit
Environment Minister meets US delegation
Mansingh, addressing a panel discussion on ‘Modi-Obama Summit: A paradigm shift in India-US Relation’ at the University of Chicago Center on December 8 evening, said that Modi’s visit was trend-setting and helped repair the damage to bilateral relations of the past four years. “The visit brought back the fizz to bilateral relations, and the mood to US business about India,” said Mansingh at the seminar partnered by the Indo-American Friendship Association. He added that around $40 billion worth of transactions were inked following the Modi
visit. According to Mansingh, the “ground-breaking moment” in bilateral ties was the inking of the civil nuclear deal between then prime minister Manmohan Singh and George Bush in June 2005. Veteran journalist and Rajya Sabha member H.K. Dua said, while the Modi invite to Obama to attend the Republic Day Parade next year is a major achievement, the US president would be expecting some returns from India. “Obama would expect, would like India to be generous in climate change, investments in the defense arena,” Dua said.

he U.S. says “now is not the time for business as usual with Russia” but insists Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming India visit would not cast a shadow on President Barack Obama’s own trip in January. “Let’s wait and see what comes from the visit,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters when asked about reports that a number of trade agreements on oil and gas as also a nuclear site may be signed during Putin’s India visit. “I know there’s a lot of rumors, often of trade deals or economic deals, but let’s see what’s actually put into practice here,” she said. But “as we’ve said before, now is not the time for business as usual with Russia,” Harf said. “We’ve con-

Man jailed for threatening Gabbard WASHINGTON: A US court has sentenced a New York man to 33 months in prison for making a series of threats against Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Tulsi Gabbad Representatives. Aniruddha Sherbow, 44, had entered a plea of no contest on February 21 in the US District Court to two counts of transmission of threats in interstate commerce, according to an FBI release. Sherbow Judge Reggie B. Walton accepted the plea and sentenced Sherbow on December 8. Walton also ordered Sherbow to pay $538,282 in restitution to the US government, as reimbursement for security expenses.
Three online recruited American teens held while trying to join IS CHICAGO: Three online-recruited teens have been caught while trying to join the terrorist outfit Islamic State (IS), reports The Washington Post. This year alone, officials have detained at least 15 US citizens who were trying to travel to Syria to join the militants, added the report. The girls from suburban Denver in Colorado are two sisters, ages 17 and 15, and their 16-year-old friend of ethnic Somali origin. They were reported missing after they skipped school, but their families were unaware of their whereabouts. Their plan was to fly to Istanbul, then drive into Syria to live in the Islamic homeland, or caliphate, established by
the Islamic State, the militant group that has massacred civilians in Iraq and Syria and beheaded Western journalists and aid workers. The Khan teens, U.S.-born children of Indian immigrants, each left letters for their parents explaining their motives. “An Islamic State has been established and it is thus obligatory upon every able-bodied male and female to migrate there,” Khan wrote. “Muslims have been crushed under foot for too long...... This nation is openly against Islam and Muslims... His sister wrote: “Death is inevitable, and all of the times we enjoyed will not matter as we lay on
our death beds. Death is an appointment.” The Khan teens are part of a growing number of young Americans who are joining or attempting to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the Islamic State, the Post reported.. “Their propaganda is unusually slick. They are broadcasting their poison in something like 23 languages,” FBI Director James B. Comey was quoted as saying, adding that the terrorist group is trying to attract “both fighters and people who would be the spouses ... to their warped world.” A U.S. law enforcement official said authorities had been monitoring the communications of at least one of the teens. —IANS

NATIONAL OUTCRY AGAINST UBER Cab driver with the US-based firm held for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman; Many states ban the service IANS, NEW DELHI
U
S-based online global cab company Uber was in for more trouble Tuesday after Delhi Police slapped a case of cheating and violating lawful orders after one of its drivers was arrested for raping a 25year-old woman business analyst. It also emerged that the driver was involved in two earlier cases of rape and one of molestation. The Delhi government has banned “all activities” by Uber in the national capital and also blacklisted the firm from providing transport services in the city in future. Home Minister Rajnath Singh on December 9 said he has asked state governments and union territories to ban all web-based radio taxis following the rape incident. “The ministry of home affairs has advised the state government and union territories to ensure that the operations of web-based taxi services are stopped and such service providers which are not licensed

with the state governments or union territory administration are prohibited to operate till they get registered themselves with the administration,” Rajnath Singh said in the Rajya Sabha.
Delhi Police cracked down on Uber, filing a case under sections 420 (cheating) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sarai Rohilla police sta-
tion in north Delhi on December 9 The tourism ministry also advised state governments and union territories to deploy ‘tourist police’ for the safety and security of tourists. Many metro cities, including
Bengaluru and Mumbai, are verifying online cab services. The Delhi Commission for Women has issued notice to Uber for laxity in verifying the background of drivers and also asked Delhi Police to submit a report on the rape case. The accused driver, 32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, has also been booked for submitting forged documents to get a permit to ply his cab in the capital. Yadav is accused of raping the woman in his cab while taking her to north Delhi on December 5 night. He was arrested on December 7 from his native place Mathura. Yadav, who is in three-day police custody, has confessed to his crime and told police that he raped the woman after parking his car in a secluded spot beside Zakhira bridge in Delhi. He said the woman kept screaming for help for 30 minutes as he slapped and threatened her.
Kashmiris defy separatist boycott to vote IANS, SRINAGAR
B Opposition wants Parrikar to stop ‘chilling’ in Goa PANAJI: After outrage on the social media, the opposition is protesting against Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s presence at a book release function in Goa, hours after a major terrorist strike in Jammu and Kashmir. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress have asked the former Goa chief minister to safeguard India’s borders and not continue to interfere in state politics as a “Super CM”. Congress leader Durgadas Kamat claims that if an Indian defense minister can spare two days a week “chilling” in Goa, there was something seriously amiss. “Defense minister is a full-time job. The country does not want a parttimer in that position. How can (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, himself a workaholic, allow his defense minister to do such a shoddy, half-hearted
job?” Kamat asks. On Friday evening, hours after suspected militants from the Lashkar-eTaiba attacked an army camp in Baramulla killing eight soldiers and two policemen, Parrikar took time to attend a literary festival held on the outskirts of Panaji. Ever since he was elevated as defense minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government last month, Parrikar, who is synonymous with the BJP in the politically non-significant state, has been visiting Goa two to three days almost every week. BJP sources told IANS that Parrikar was in the process of establishing a camp office in Panaji, where he is expected to spend two days each week to oversee political as well as administrative matters in Goa.
raving the freezing cold and defying a call by separatist groups to boycott assembly polls, 58 percent of voters in Jammu and Kashmir on December 9 turned up to cast their ballot in the third round of the staggered elections. “There was incident-free polling in all 16 constituencies. Around 58 percent of voters cast their ballot. The percentage is likely to go up when the final figures arrive,” state Chief Electoral Officer Umang Narula said at a media conference. Out of 8,441 Kashmiri Pandit voters, 55 percent exercised their franchise, he said. The highest turnout of 82.74
percent was recorded in Chrar-iSharief, while the lowest of 30 percent was seen in Sopore. Uri recorded 79 percent, Rafiabad 53, Sangrama 56.15, Baramulla 45, Gulmarg 72, Pattan 60, Chadoora 65, Badgam 70, Beerwah 74, Khansahib 73, Tral 37.68, Pampore 46.48, Pulwama 38.31, and Rajpora 47.07.
Balloting took place after a string of terror attacks Dec 5 left 21 people, including eight soldiers, dead in Kashmir. Voters trickled out in the morning at almost all polling stations to elect their representatives for the 16 assembly segments despite the freezing cold that gripped Kashmir. As the day progressed and the sun peeped out, more voters thronged the polling booths. The electorate comprised 717,049 males, 650,476 females and 23 third-gender voters. Long queues of enthusiastic voters in Kramshore village of Khansahib constituency seemed determined to choose their representatives, and completely ignored the separatist call to stay away from voting.

lectors,” she added. New York-based Klein was in the capital recently for the preview of Christie’s second India sale in Mumbai on December 11, after its successfully debut last year, when modernist artist Vasudeo Gaitonde’s Untitled was sold for ` 237 million — the highest price for a modern work of art in this
country. The resounding success has raised expectation levels, which a team of specialists has been taking care of ever since the catalogue of the first India auction was ready. “We start thinking about what is next when we are done with one catalogue,” pointed out Klein, who handles India, London and New York sales of modern and contem-
porary art. Systematic and wellplanned strategies are building blocks for the grand finale. Looking for “anchor pieces” initiates the process. “Suppose we have an auction of 80 lots, we first start chasing for 20-25 works for the anchor pieces,” Klein explained. T
he U.S. Senate has confirmed Richard Rahul Verma, President Barack Obama's nominee to be the next American ambassador to India, making him the first IndianAmerican envoy in New Delhi. Verma, 46, a former key aide to then secretary of state Hillary Clinton, was approved by the Senate by a unanimous voice vote on December 9, signifying the bipartisan support for better India-US relations. He is expected to take up his position in New Delhi before Obama's visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day, the first US president to get the honor. At his confirmation hearing last week, Verma told the Senate Foreign Relations committee that Obama's “historic visit to India in January” will build on “Modi's highly successful visit to the United States this past September.” “There is no question that this is a defining and exciting time in the US-India relationship,” he said. “There's little doubt the relationship has been reenergized, with renewed enthusiasm to take our partnership to the next level.” Verma, whose parents immigrated from India in the sixties also acknowledged the contribution of

Democrat Barve, 56, elected to his 7th four-year term last month, has been named chairman of the newly designated Environment & Transportation Committee by Speaker Michael E. Currently Verma is a senior counsellor at Steptoe & Johnson law firm and the Albright Stonebridge Group, a business advisory company, led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011. US Senate report slams CIA for detainees’ torture WASHINGTON: A scathing Senate report on December 9 slammed the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for its “brutal” interrogations of terrorist detainees during the Bush era, saying they delivered no “ticking time bomb” information that prevented an attack. The majority report issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee also accused the spy agency of routinely misleading the White House and the Congress about the information it obtained from the detention and interrogation of terrorism suspects. The interrogation techniques branded by critics as torture — deployed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack were “deeply flawed” and often resulted in “fabricated” information, according to the report. Based on more than six million internal agency documents, the report said detainees were deprived of sleep for as long as a week. ‘Indian fishermen will be released by Bangladesh soon’
JHARKHALI (WEST BENGAL): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 8 said she has written to the Centre to facilitate talks with Bangladesh for ensuring the return of Indian fishermen who had unknowingly entered the neighboring country’s territory. Banerjee said fishermen from the Sunderbans region, who are in custody of Bangladesh authorities for straying across the boundary, will return home soon. “Since there were some changes in the boundary recently, the fishermen were unaware. I have written to the Centre to initiate discussions with the Bangladesh government,” she said. Earlier, two Bangladeshi fishing boats, with 56 fishermen on board, were apprehended for illegally fishing in Indian waters off the West Bengal coast, officials said on December 7.

OSLO: Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for refusing to quit school, and received their Nobel Peace Prizes on December 10 after two days of celebration honouring their work for children's rights. Malala became by far the youngest laureate, widely praised for her global campaigning since she was shot in the head on her school bus in 2012. Some groups in Pakistan, however, have accused her of being a puppet of the West and violating the tenets of conservative Islam. “I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not,” said Malala, 17, better known by her first name, which is also the title of her book and the name of her foundation. “It is the story of many girls,” she said in Oslo's ornate city hall on the anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's death. Although the focus was undoubtedly on Oslo, Nobel Prize winners in literature, chemistry, physics, medicine and economics were gathering in Stockholm, due to receive their prizes from the King of Sweden later in the day.
Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labor sometimes in violent confrontations, kept a modest profile in Oslo. “I've lost two of my colleagues,” Satyarthi said about his work. “Carrying the dead body of a colleague who is fighting for the protection of children is something I'll never forget, even as I sit here to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.” Arriving in Norway with friends and young activists Malala met children, walked the streets to greet supporters and will open an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. “She's very brave and tough, fighting even after the Taliban shot her in the head,” said Andrea, 12, who was among thousands of children hoping to greet Malala in downtown Oslo.

A high level committee of the Tamil Nadu-based party passed a resolution to this effect at a meeting here. The MDMK said that when it joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party made it clear that the BJP-led government should not support Sri Lanka and its President Mahinda Rajapaksa. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had gone against the earlier promise and started supporting the Rajapaksa government, it said. The MDMK, which has no

Vaiko’s party complained that the central government had also failed to help the fishing community in Tamil Nadu vis-a-vis attacks and arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy. Although the MDMK’s exit will in no way affect the central government, it becomes the first party to quit the BJP-led alliance since Modi took power in May this year. As long-standing supporter of the vanquished Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, Vaiko had recently criticized Modi for warming up to President Rajapaksa. On November 26, the MDMK took a leading part in celebrating the 60th birth anniversary of the slain Tamil Tigers leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, all over Tamil Nadu.

shutdown, protests and meetings marked the 22nd anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, which passed off peacefully on December 6 in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. A shutdown was observed in parts of Hyderabad on a call given by some Muslim groups to demand reconstruction of the demolished mosque at its original site in Ayodhya. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions were closed and vehicles were off the roads in the old city and other Muslim-majority areas as police
stepped up security to prevent any untoward incident. The usual hustle bustle around historic Charminar was missing while the roads in the centuries-old
markets wore a deserted look. Shops downed the shutters in response to the shutdown call given by the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Majlis Bachao
Tehreek (MBT) and other groups. Police arrested few youngsters, who tried to take out a rally defying the ban orders in Moghalpura near Charminar. The youth were raising slogans in support of their demand for reconstruction of the mosque. Over 5,000 policemen and personnel from paramilitary forces were deployed in different parts of the city. Special security measures were taken near historic Makkah Masjid. A tight vigil was maintained across the old city as the attempts to take out rallies by some organisations and also celebration of Vijay Diwas by some others led to violence in the past. Chitrangada Singh won’t go bald for fun
moves on to next generation of co-stars
NEW DELHI: At a time when actors are leaving no stone unturned to portray their onscreen character with conviction, actress Chitrangada Singh says she won’t shave off her tresses for any role, but only for something meaningful. “I have cut my hair for a role in a movie where I played a corporate person. But I won’t go bald for fun. The role has to be that good and exciting. It has to be amazing and different,” the actor told IANS over phone from Mumbai. Chitrangada has maintained a likeable blend between serious and commercial cinema with movies like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Desi Boyz, Inkaar and I, Me Aur Main. “For me, oiling has always been very important. I make it a point to do it twice a month,” she said.
MUMBAI: Having worked with most of the A-listers from her own generation of actors, including Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt has now moved to the next elder generation. In her next two releases, to be directed by Vikas Bahl and Ayan Mukerjee, Alia is paired with Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, respectively. Though she is tight-lipped about the project with Sushant Singh Rajput to be directed by Homi Adjania, Alia happily admits to being part of Mukerjee's next film starring his best friend Ranbir who has featured in both the directors' films so far — Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. “The only project I am officially part of is the film directed by Ayan with Ranbir in the lead,” she said.
I’m not insecure: Anushka Sharma MUMBAI: Actor Anushka Sharma, who is part of Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, says that she is not insecure working in the multi-starrer as the role matters more to her than anything else. In fact when Zoya offered me this role, she thought I will not take up. Priyanka’s role is bigger in the film but I think the film matters (to me). I said yes to Zoya the moment I heard the role,” she said.

He has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1999. Gupta’s appointment was announced by West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) Cabinet Secretary Karen L. Bowling. Since 2009, Dr Gupta has served as the executive director and health officer of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, the largest local health department in West Virginia. He also serves as the executive director and health officer of the Putnam County Health Department. Prior to that, he was assistant professor
Dr Rahul Gupta
of medicine of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn.; assistant professor of medicine at the University of AlabamaBirmingham, and a primary care physician at Florida Medical Clinic. “I am deeply honored to be appointed to this position by Secretary Bowling,” Dr Gupta said. “Working with professionals and partners across our great state, I look forward to the opportunity to help West Virginians build a healthier future by achieving positive and lasting health outcomes.” In the wake of last January’s Elk River
chemical leak and the public’s loss of confidence over the contaminated water system, Dr Gupta and Dr Tierney expressed quite different views on the ongoing crisis. Dr Tierney repeatedly said she was drinking and using the water for all purposes and said that flu season, unwashed hands and anxiety were the reasons why people were going to the hospital with water-related symptoms. A month after the leak, at a congressional hearing, Dr Tierney declined to say if the drinking water was safe. Dr Gupta, from the start, expressed more hesitancy. He said he would like to drink the water, but, a month after the leak, it still smelled and it was difficult to get past that. He led the push for a long-term medical monitoring program to check on the health effects of the crisis. Dr Gupta said he did not know who would replace him at the local health department but that he would be working on transition plans for the next few weeks. He said he wanted to work on integrating the Bureau for Public Health’s various programs with each other and with health-care providers. He also said he wanted to meet with communities and local boards of health to receive input and to make sure that the bureau’s health services are “socially and linguistically competent.”

man convicted for making a series of threats against Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard has been put behind bars. Aniruddha Sherbow, 44, whose last known address was in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was sentenced to 33 months in prison for holding out several threats against the Congresswoman. Sherbow entered a plea of nolo contendere on February 21in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, to two counts of transmission of threats in interstate commerce. Under a nolo contendere plea, a defendant is convicted of the offense, accepts responsibility, and agrees that the government could prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendant in such a plea, however, does not admit to the facts of the case. The Honorable Reggie B. Walton accepted the plea and sentenced Sherbow on December 8. Following his prison term, Sherbow will be placed on three years of supervised release. During that time, he is barred from any direct or indirect contact with Congresswoman

Gabbard. Judge Walton also ordered Sherbow to pay $538,282 in restitution to the US government as reimbursement for security expenses incurred as a result of his threats. Finally, the judge ordered Sherbow to get a mental health evaluation and treatment, if necessary. Sherbow was arrested on August 28, 2013 in Tijuana, Mexico. He has been in custody ever since. In addition to New York, Sherbow has lived in California, Mexico, and Hawaii. According to the government’s evidence, Sherbow had been harassing Gabbard since

around February 2011, including making threats via email and telephone. The charges relate to two such threats made in August of 2013. On August 1, 2013, Sherbow left a voicemail message on the Congresswoman’s office phone in which he threatened to kill her. Gabbard was in Washington, D.C., when she received the threatening message. Two days later, Sherbow, identifying himself by name, sent an e-mail to Gabbard and others, including the FBI, that also contained threats directed at the Congresswoman.
Student foils move for extension of law-makers’ term BY A STAFF WRITER

ARYLAND -- Voters in Prince George’s County, Maryland, narrowly rejected a ballot measure that would have extended term limits for the county executive and members of the county council. The margin was about 51% to 49 percent. One of the main opponents of the measure was Shabnam Ahmed, a sophomore enrolled in letters and sciences at the University of Maryland, according to the college newspaper, The Diamondback. Ahmed created an online initiative opposing the ballot measure — Question J — and partnered with local organizations to campaign against it, the newspaper reported.

Diamondback. “Extending term limits would only increase the likelihood of creating a regime in politics, and voters don’t want that. The measure failed despite many elected officials coming out in favor of it, including Prince George’s County chief executive Rushern Baker III, who just ran unopposed for a second term. Since the margin of defeat was closer than a similar measure in 2000, Ahmed said she felt it could “come up again, especially if you look at the history of the movement. At the same time, I don’t think it would pass. Voters have spoken twice now, in 2000 and 2014, and their minds haven’t changed. They don’t want extensions.”

5 Indian students hurt in car-truck collision
BY A STAFF WRITER
C
LEVELAND (Texas) -A group of engineering students from Texas A&M returning by car from a holiday road trip to New Orleans crashed into a pick-up truck on a dark road in Montgomery County Sunday night. The pick-up truck apparently veered across the yellow line in the middle of the two-lane road, and the student driving the car tried but failed to veer out of its path. The collision mangled the car so badly that emergency workers spent roughly half an hour cutting all the students out of the wreckage All five of the students--Pranan Kannan, 22; Akshay Jain, 22; Chiranjibi Boere, 23; Shachit Iyer, 23; and Kishan Bajaj, 24--were rushed to area hospitals. Kannan, the driver, was taken to Kingwood Hospital in stable condition. Jain, sitting in passenger seat, was reported in very critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. All of the young men came from India to attend Texas A&M, a university official said. Their Thanksgiving holiday trip to New Orleans was documented in photographs posted on Facebook showing the smiling friends enjoying themselves on Bourbon Street and on the banks of the Mississippi River. The truck driver, identified as Roman Polawco, 35, of Cleveland, was not seriously injured. What caused his vehicle to cross out of its lane is still under investigation but neither alcohol nor speeding was believed to be a factor.
NJ police are hot on trail of credit card fraudsters BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW PROVIDENCE (NJ) – The police believe there may be a link between credit cards used in a New Providence business and the fraudulent use of credit cards elsewhere. The police are investigating the use of the cards which detectives have linked to a business in New Providence, according to a release from the department. After being used locally, they are then used to make fraudulent purchases at various stores in Plainfield, Branchburg and mall stores at Jersey Gardens, Short Hills, Menlo Park and Woodbridge. Sgt. Daniel Henn said the department has “had several victims come forward during this investigation and it is important to disseminate this information in an effort to locate any further victims in the area.” The police are looking for anyone who has noticed fraudulent purchases after November 1 on their credit or debit cards, who still has the cards in their possession and who used their credit or debit card within New Providence before the fraud took place.

Al Fatah, Bridgewater reach $7.75m settlement
B
BY A STAFF WRITER
RIDGEWATER (NJ) -- The Al Fa l a h C e n t e r h a s re a c h e d a $7.75-million settlement agreement with Bridgewater Township that will allow Al Falah to move forward with its plans to build a mosque in Bridgewater, ending a three-year land use dispute. The settlement reached last week includes a $5 million payment from the Township’s insurance carrier for alleged damages, costs and attorney fees in exchange for Al Falah’s dropping its lawsuit against the township. The settlement represents a significant step in Al Falah Center’s goal to build the first mosque in Bridgewater Township. “We applaud the Mayor and the Council for entering into this agreement and look forward to working cooperatively with them to reach our objective,” said Yasser Abdelkader, president of Al Falah Center. “And we want to thank our legal team who stood by us throughout.” Al Falah Center is represented by The Brennan Center for Justice, Arnold & Porter LLP, Archer & Greiner, P.C., and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. A Federal District Judge granted a preliminary injunction in the Al Falah Center v Township of Bridgewater case in October 2013, allowing the Al Falah Center to move forward with its application to build a mosque and community center in Bridgewater, NJ. After years of searching for a location for the local Muslim community to pray, Al Falah purchased a property in Bridgewater, NJ, that met its requirements. The site of the former Redwood Inn had the space to become a mosque and community center and was located in an area that was zoned to allow such a facility. But following an anti-Muslim internet campaign, hundreds of people showed up to protest the mosque

project at a Planning Board meeting to consider the proposal. In response, the town of Bridgewater illegally rushed through a change to its zoning rules that effectively blocked the mosque. The Township cited supposed traffic concerns, but the Township’s own documents and actions show that these concerns were not legitimate and were not the real reason for the zoning changes. The suit, filed on April 26, 2011, alleged that in changing the law to exclude the mosque, Bridgewater violated the Al Falah Center’s federal constitutional rights under the First Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, as well as the corresponding protections of New Jersey’s Constitution. A number of federal and state statutory claims are also alleged in the complaint, including multiple violations of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA). In June 2011, the Court denied Bridgewater’s motion to dismiss the suit. And on September 30, 2013, Judge Shipp issued a decisive ruling for Al Falah enjoining the town from applying the
G N I M O C P U
new discriminatory law to its mosque application. In doing so, Judge Shipp found that Al Falah had not only demonstrated irreparable injury to the Muslim community that had been deprived of a house of worship for years, but had also demonstrated that it was likely to succeed on the merits of at least its statutory claim. Following this ruling, the parties engaged in extensive settlement negotiations that have now resulted in an agreement designed to allow Al Falah Center to build its house of worship in Bridgewater. Under the terms of the settlement, the Township has agreed to exchange a 10.75-acre piece of land on Route 202/206 in Bridgewater for the Redwood Inn property. The exchange will occur only after Al Falah Center has obtained all approvals necessary to construct a mosque on the new property; if those approvals are not obtained, the settlement provides that the preliminary injunction will be made permanent so that Al Falah Center can pursue the construction of a mosque at the Redwood Inn site without reference to the challenged ordinance.
DISON (NJ) -- The former president of a Middlesex County investment company has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for defrauding investors out of more than $250,000. According to US Attorney Paul J. Fishman, Shreyans Desai, 27, a local resident, president of Shreysiddh Capital LLC, located in the Iselin section of Woodbridge, previously pleaded guilty before US. District Judge William J. Martini to two counts of wire fraud. A third count in the indictment, securities fraud, was dismissed after Judge Martini imposed the sentence in Newark federal court. Documents filed in the case and statements made in court revealed that Desai misled several investors about his licensing status and the registration status of the company to induce them to entrust their money to him so that he could trade securities on their behalf. Desai then sought to retain control of the funds by providing investors with an inflated value of their investments and also inflated the amount of commissions he purportedly earned through trading those funds. In addition to the prison term, Judge Martini sentenced Desai to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay restitution of $121,250.

T LOUIS, MO-Soorya Performing Arts, which has been making marathon efforts to see that classical art forms survive the test of time and flourish for generations to enjoy, came up with the “Soorya Performing Series for Young Talent”. Its Fall-2014 series held on November 15 included three highly talented artists from Chicago, IL --a solo veena concert by Divya Pariti, a disciple of Rajaveena School of music, Chicago; a Mohiniyattam performance by Elizabeth Nellamattathil, a disciple of Aanada Dance Theater) and Vidya Govind (a disciple of Guru Hema Rajagopalan). Young Divya Pariti played veena with a confidence and the music was very vibrant

and colorful. She presented “Mayaatheetha swaroopini” in raga Mayamalavagowla, followed by “Subramanyena” in raga Shuddha Dhanyasi. Elizabeth started her Mohiniyattam performance with a composition of the 18th century Tamil poet Oothukkadu Venkata Subba Iyer ‘s Pranavakaaram Siddhivinayakam, which was followed by an expressive Jagadhodhaarana, in which she portrayed the mischievous nature of young Krishna very effectively. Vidya Govind, disciple of Guru Hema Rajagopalan, began her recital with a crisp presentation of Mallari, followed by a second half of Varnam – Suma Sayaka. Her Nritta was very clean and Abhinaya was rendered well through sanchari Bhavas (moving story lines) based on stories of

Gajendra Moksha and Kaliya mardana. She presented Narsi Mehta’s Gujarati poem depicting the negative nature of Lord Rama in doubting the purity of his wife Seetha and putting her through the test of fire (Agni Pariksha). The youth series by Soorya Performing Arts provided a much-needed opportunity for Indian American youth. This was supported by parents of Soorya Dance, Music and Yoga School; by funds received from Missouri Arts Council (MAC), a state agency of State of Missouri; Regional Arts Commission (RAC) – a city organization of St. Louis and may other patrons. The event was ably supported by many volunteers and was attended by more than 200 art patrons.

HICAGO (IL) -- Hari Om Mandir organized its 27th Annual ‘FundRaising Dinner-2014’ at India House Banquet Hall, Schaumburg, IL, on November 22. The event, which was attended by many devotees, friends, and well-wishers, was packed with great food, entertainment and fund-raising activities. Devotees recognized and praised the progress and work done for the temple and donated generously for the upcoming projects. After puja by Pandit Dinesh Kumar, fundraising chairman Anil Saxena greeted everyone present and thanked both boards for their continuous support, hoping that the lofty goals the Mandir has set would be achieved. President Indrajit Sarkar praised the contribution of Saxena and BOT chairman Ayodhia Salwan and added that but for their support many religious programs like Sankat Mochan Mahayagya could not have been held.
He spoke about the mandir’s Go Green project, health camps, a fabulous Youth Talent showcase organized by the youth group, and said that the new education classes would be a boon for the children preparing for ACT/SAT. BOT chairman Ayodhia Salwan said that plans were afoot for expanding parking facilities for devotees, an elevator for senior citizens and a new room for coats and shoes. He said that donations would be used to provide better facilities at the place of worship and make children aware about India’s rich cultural heritage and preservation of Hinduism in the land far away from their roots. Both the Boards recognized Ravinder Kalia, Subhash Saluja and Satyajit Sarkar (Youth President) for their efforts towards the growth of the temple. A grand program was organized mixed with dance by Ayushi and Palak Tripathi and performances by Shali Dhawan, Satyajit Sarkar, Ram Verma with MC Gayatri Rathod and DJ Nilesh Pardiwala.

ASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a landmark moment for the Hindu Indian American community, the Texas State Board of Education voted last month to adopt new textbooks that dramatically improve the way Hinduism is depicted. The Hindu American Foundation was involved in the adoption process from the beginning, working with scholars and historians to ensure a constructive and accurate understanding of Hinduism. As a result of the changes made by publishers in response to HAF’s reviews, the textbooks now present a picture of Hinduism that emphasizes the religion’s core philosophies with accurate explanations of key concepts. “This is a game-changing moment for our community,” said Houston-based HAF board member Rishi Bhutada, who testified before the state board in September, urging changes to the proposed content. “This is the first time that this type of textbook reform has ever been accomplished on a statewide level anywhere in the U.S., and to do it in Texas, one of the two
biggest textbook markets in the country, is amazing,” the Indian American activist said. Educators, several publishers, and other advocacy groups worked closely with HAF to make sure the representations of Hinduism were not steeped in the archaic and inaccurate “caste, cows, and karma” approach that has dominated textbook content for years. With 100 errors corrected, additional changes include the inclusion of Hinduism and Hindus in contemporary world history and geography, and greater context in the explanation of caste, including the definition of terms such as varna and jati. Another publisher mentioned the Hindu saint Adi Shankara, the first time such a reference has been made in an American K-12 textbook. HAF’s director of Education and Curriculum Reform, Dr. Murali Balaji, said that the changes reflected rigorous academic feedback and a fact-based approach to teaching about Hinduism. Balaji credited an engaged Hindu Indian American community in Texas as well as the leadership of Bhutada and HAF executive council member Dr. Rajiv Pandit of Fort Worth who worked to get members of the Dallas-Fort Worth community engaged in the importance of the review. The textbook vote is final, and the textbook changes will reflect in materials next year. The Hindu American Foundation’s evidence-based efforts in education reform have been acknowledged in Texas and across the country, including by prominent social studies and history organizations such as the National Council for the Social Studies.

Welcome to the newlyopened Tawak in Sector 63, an eclectic combination of office and apartment blocks that takes you on a wonderous Indo-Oriental culinary journey. “Tawak (Sanskrit for cinnamon) has been one of the most revered and traded spices since ancient times. Ours is an endeavour to take you on a stimulating journey across Asia to experience the rich diversity in flavors of the Indian and Oriental cuisines,” cofounder Deepankar Arora said as he served the cucumber afterwork welcome drink. Light on the palette, the drink came in a mason jar with a huge slice of cucumber adorning the side. “We have different glasses for different drinks,” explained the 33-year-old Arora, a quintessential “Purani Dilli” boy who studied at St. Xavier’s and was previously the executive chef at Mum-

martphones are affecting the love lives of nearly 70 percent of women, says a study, adding that technology and the screens that consume us are creating a “technoference” in couples. “The ‘technoference’ ranges from picking up the phone while partners are casually hanging out to checking Facebook while in the middle of an argument,” said study author Sarah Coyne, psychologist at the Utah-based Brigham Young University in the US. The poll, which was conducted
by Brandon McDaniel of The Pennsylvania State University and Sarah Coyne of Brigman Young University in Utah, surveyed 143 women. In it, 62 per cent of women

One quarter ever said their partner has been known to compose texts during face-to-face conversations, according to the findings, which were published in Psychology of Popular Media Culture. “Over time, individuals feel less satisfied with their relationship as well as with the way their life is currently going. eople who adopt a healthy lifestyle in their teenage years face a significantly reduced risk of contracting heart diseases, says a new research. Maintaining a healthy heart while young may help prevent future disease and disability, the findings showed. “People should adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle at all ages, especially young,” said Thanh Huyen T. In the study spanning more than

to a heart attack. Atherosclerosis is the disease process that causes plaque build-up in the arteries, which narrows them and restricts blood flow. “If you’re hanging out in a room where people are smoking a lot of marijuana, you may be harming your blood vessels,” said senior author of the study Matthew Springer, associate professor of Medicine at the University of California in the US. “There is no reason to think marijuana smoke is better than tobacco smoke. Avoid them both,” Springer added. In the study, blood vessel function in lab rats dropped to 70 percent after 30 minutes of exposure to second-hand marijuana smoke.

The researchers co-related the data to the participants’ responses to a 2003 health survey about functional disability and quality of life. The findings were presented at the “American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2014” in Chicago, Illinois.

We are trying to show that analysing tweets could uncover similar results but could do so more quickly and at a much lower cost,” Coppersmith added. NEW YORK: Too much salt in one’s diet increases the risk of contracting kidney problems, says a new research. The researchers found high sodium intake (an average of 4.7g a day) is linked with an increased risk of needing dialysis, but no benefit was seen for low sodium intake. “Our findings show that the consumption of a healthy diet may protect from future major renal events,” said Andrew Smyth from the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Your week ahead... Aries After the pressures you have had to deal with since late October you can now move onto the next stage of giving consideration to priorities that should take precedence during the next 2 years.
Taurus Applying determination to anything you have little choice but to be responsible for will pay dividends until mid January. Your view of the future can begin to have a greater sense of optimism from this week.
Gemini You could feel invisible this week when it comes to gaining appreciation from others or any form of recognition for what you have done. It might be what you need to rethink your position with them.

While neither of these findings is surprising, analysis of Twitter posts could become a useful yardstick in quickly measuring mental health trends, particularly after events such as natural disasters and military conflicts. The computer algorithms used to discover mental health data from tweets look for words and language patterns associated with these ailments, including word cues linked to anxiety and insomnia.
Cancer Dealings with other people will still maintain a strong focus though this week more pleasant interaction and willingness from others can come into play. Those who are determined to have control will now begin to hide them.
Leo You come to a turning point this week in the new 12-year cycle you began in mid July. Reflect, from now to early March, upon where you are at and what you must change about yourself for better tomorrow.
Virgo There can be conflict this week between what you want to do for yourself and habit patterns that are already in place, particularly within a family situation. Be careful about letting things nag at you to mid January.

Researchers found that asthma and heart disease are associated with increased levels of inflammation in the body. The study was presented at the ongoing American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions.
(December 14-19) Libra You can begin to relax when it comes to matters you have had to restructure since late October. It all moves to an easier stage from now to mid January, opening up opportunities for greater enjoyment.
Scorpio You have likely considered many options since late October. Now you need to move towards putting the foundation in place for what you want to bed down over the next 2 years. Aim to be convivial in conversations to early January..
Sagittarius Someone is under your influence more than you realize. They are likely having difficulty in determining what your aims are in the long term. This does not necessarily mean you have to spell out your thoughts or position.
Capricorn Venus, the planet of pleasure, peace and balance moves into your sign this week where it will remain until 4th January. This will encourage you to enjoy yourself as well as generate much social activity.
Aquarius You have begun a new 2-year personal cycle with Mars now in your sign, where it will remain until January 12. Your energy level should pick up as well as your self confidence. A turning point with others.
Pisces Your energy level will likely be low from now to mid January — this is a time where you need to ensure you get plenty of rest. You need to find time to turn your energies towards contemplating your position.
