rime Minister Narendra Modi connected with thousands of rapturously cheering Indian diaspora at Madison Square Garden here Sunday, promising them he would deliver on the electoral promise of a resurgent India and urged them to join in the mass movement to work for their country of origin. Addressing a 20,000-strong crowd at the venue — that has seen former US presidents and rock stars take to the stage but never an Indian politician — and also thousands watching the event live outside on giant screens, and millions back home and around the world on TV and internet, Modi announced relief measures for the diaspora, including lifelong visas for Persons of Indian Origin cardholders and the merger of the
PIO and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) schemes with a new scheme to be announced soon. Speaking in his chatty style in Hindi for almost an hour, and attired in cream kurta-pyjama and a light orange jacket, Modi praised the Indian diaspora for its contribution to IT, saying India was no longer considered a land of snake charmers but of software wizards. “Our forefathers maybe would play with snakes, but we play with the mouse (computer mouse),” he said, to wild cheers. Referring to the elections that swept him to power in May, Modi thanked the diaspora for their support and said he has not taken even a 15-minute vacation since becoming prime minister. “Winning elections is not for sitting on a seat, it is a responsibility. And I have not taken even a 15minute vacation since becoming

Modi bats for UN reform Addressing the 69th UNGA summit, Prime Minister told Pakistan not to rake up bilateral issues at global forums; asks for structural changes in the UN body
Modi pitches for equitable role in UN decision making NEW YORK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his case for giving nations contributing troops to U.N. peacekeeping operations more say in decisionmaking at his meeting with SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon on September 27. Ban told him he admired his focus on improving the welfare of all Indians. hiding Pakistan for raking up Kashmir in the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on September 27 that the UN was not the forum for resolving bilateral issues and stressed his government’s prioritizing good ties with neighbors even as he pushed for reforms of the UN and touched upon issues challenging the world, including terrorism, poverty, hunger and climate change. Modi, speaking in Hindi in his maiden address to the UN General
Assembly, said: “I am prepared to engage in a serious bilateral dialogue with Pakistan in a peaceful atmosphere, without the shadow of terrorism, to promote our friendship and cooperation. However, Pakistan must also take its responsibility seriously to create an appropriate environment.” In his 35-minute speech, Modi made a strong pitch for reform of the UN, and underlined the Indian philosophy of “vasudeva kutumbakam” or seeing the world as one family. Referring to his government’s outreach to neighbors, he said India “desires a peaceful and stable
ment between countries. “We must reform the United Nations, including the Security Council, and make it more democratic and participative,” he said in his address to the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. “We need a genuine dialogue and engagement between countries. environment for its development”. “A nation’s destiny is linked to its neighborhood. That is why my government has placed the highest priority on advancing friendship and cooperation with our neighbors,” Modi said. Modi called for greater engage-
of the philosophical tradition that I come from. Our efforts must begin here — in the United Nations.” He said the UN would be a 70year-old organization next year and it was time to “ask ourselves whether we should wait until we are 80 or 100”, to bring changes to

the world body. “Let us fulfill our promise to reform the United Nations Security Council by 2015. Let us fulfill our pledge on a post-2015 Development Agenda so that there is new hope and belief in us around the world. Let us make 2015 also a new watershed for a sustainable world. Let it be the beginning of a new journey together.” Modi said that terrorism had spread far and wide and that there was hardly any country that has stayed untouched by it. In a tangential reference to Pakistan, Modi said some countries still allowed terrorism to grow on their “territory or use terrorism as instruments of their policy”. He urged the international community to put aside their differences and mount a concerted international effort to combat terrorism and extremism. “As a symbol of this effort, I urge you to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,” he said.

‘Chalein saath saath’, US tells India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama vow to move forward with a new agenda to realize full potential of a renewed US-India partnership IANS, WASHINGTON
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Barack Obama on September 30 vowed to “chalein saath saath — together we go forward” with a new agenda to realize the full potential of a renewed USIndia partnership for the 21st century. “As nations, we’ve partnered over the decades to deliver progress to our people... Still, the true potential of our relationship has
yet to be fully realized,” they said in a joint op-ed piece published on the Washington Post website. “The advent of a new government in India is a natural opportunity to broaden and deepen our relationship,” the two leaders wrote ahead of their bilateral summit to reboot a stalled relationship. The op-ed noted that their “partnership is robust, reliable and enduring, and it is expanding” involving more bilateral collaboration than ever, including between

the two militaries, private sectors and civil society. “Indeed, so much has happened that, in 2000, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee could declare that we are natural allies.” But, “It is time to set a new agenda, one that realizes concrete benefits
for our citizens,” Obama and Modi wrote noting, “With a reinvigorated level of ambition and greater confidence, we can go beyond modest and conventional goals.” “This will be an agenda that enables us to find mutually rewarding ways to expand our col-
laboration in trade, investment and technology that harmonize with India’s ambitious development agenda, while sustaining the United States as the global engine of growth,” they said. At their summit, the two leaders said they would discuss ways in which they can boost manufacturing and expand affordable renewable energy, while sustainably securing the future of our common environment. Also on the agenda would be how their “businesses, scientists and governments can partner as India works to improve the quality, reliability and availability of basic services, especially for the poorest of citizens.” An immediate area of concrete U.S. support is Modi’s “Clean India” campaign, “where we will leverage private and civil society innovation, expertise and technology to improve sanitation and hygiene throughout India,” the oped said. “While our shared efforts will benefit our own people, our partnership aspires to be larger than merely the sum of its parts,” they said. “As nations, as people, we aspire to a better future for all; one in which our strategic partnership also produces benefits for the world at large,” they wrote echoing India’s philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbaa” or “the world is one family” outlined by Modi all through his trip. “As global partners,” the two leaders wrote they were “committed to enhancing our homeland security by sharing intelligence, through counterterrorism and lawenforcement cooperation, while we jointly work to maintain freedom of navigation and lawful commerce across the seas”. They also intended to expand their “recent tradition of working together to empower women, build capacity and improve food security in Afghanistan and Africa”. “The exploration of space will continue to fire our imaginations and challenge us to raise our ambitions,” they wrote noting that both countries having “satellites orbiting Mars tells its own story”.

Modi, after holding over two-hour-long summit talks with President Barack Obama, invited US defense companies to invest in India. “India and US are natural partners and America is an integral part of our Look East, Link West policy,” he said addressing the media. India and the U.S. are to intensify cooperation in counter-terrorism operations and sharing intelligence and have agreed on disrupt-
ing financial and tactical support for terror groups like the Lashkare-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammedm, Dcompany and the Haqqani network, officials said. “Bilateral ties on energy, defense, security, and infrastructure were discussed during the Modi-Obama meeting,” said officials. Khosla loses battle to keep beach private Sun Microsystems’s co-founder bought popular Martin’s beach in northern California in 2008 IANS, WASHINGTON
V
inod Khosla, IndianAmerican co-founder of Sun Microsystems, has lost a court battle against a coastal protection group to keep the public out from a popular beach in northern California with the victorious attorney saying that “great wealth cannot be used to circumvent and ignore the law”. San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Barbara Mallach ruled that Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist, who was sued last year by the Surfrider Foundation, illegally blocked access to Martin’s beach and must open it to the public. “Today’s decision is a huge victory for all of the people of California,” Joe Cotchett of Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, the firm representing Surfrider was quoted as saying by NBC Bay Area. “It affirms that great wealth cannot be used to circumvent and ignore the law. Everyone can again visit Martin’s Beach.” Khosla bought the property, located south of Half Moon Bay, for $37.5 million in 2008. At one point, the beach had a sign welcoming the public, but that sign has since been painted over and the public was warned to stay out, NBC reported. According to the lawsuit, the gate

K Khosla bought the property for $37.5 million in 2008.
‘It affirms that great wealth cannot be used to circumvent and ignore the law. Everyone can again visit Martin’s Beach’ to the beach was closed and locked in 2010 to keep the public out. The lawsuit states that since then, at least 100 people were kicked off the property for “trespassing.” When the county told Khosla he needed a coastal permit to close the gate, he never applied for one. His attorneys argued that no permit was required to simply close a gate that was already there, NBC said.
But Surfrider sued Khosla, claiming that he ignored the law. The non-profit contended that Khosla be required to pay the maximum fine of $15,000 per day, which would amount to something in the range of $20 million. Khosla’s attorney argued in court that the Coastal Commission was a run-away regulatory body that was violating Khosla’s 5th Amendment property rights.
artar Lalvani, the Indian-origin founder of Vitabiotics, the largest vitamins company by sales in the UK, has been conferred an honorary professorship of University of Franche-Comte, one of the oldest universities in Europe, for his work in the field of dermatology. The post, only the second such to go to a Briton in the university’s history, was conferred by university president Dominique Vuitton at a ceremony in Besancon, the capital of Franche-Comte region in eastern France. Lalvani, whose family was displaced from Sind after Indian partion, settled in Mumbai before moving to the UK, studied pharmacy at King’s College, London, and completed a doctorate in medical chemistry at Bonn University before
founding his award-winning company in 1971. Lalvani’s latest invention, an antiageing tablet called Perfectil, successfully passed clinical trials recently and the results were published in the Journal of Clinical Interventions in Ageing. Vitabiotics has entered into a deal with France’s leading centre for dermatological research, CERT, a part of the university. “Ours is the first British company to bring transformative innovation to dermatology and cosmetics... so for us a French scientific partner was a natural choice,” Lalvani said. Lalvani is one of the richest Asians in Britain and Vitabiotics exports several brands to over 100 countries, including India. Its Indian arm, Meyer Vitabiotics, is betting big on the domestic market, and recently launched a few health food supplements in the country.
AAPI doctors take leadership Accused blames her attorney for withholding truth lessons at Yale University IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: The largest ethnic organization of Indian-American physicians has launched a new initiative, a Leadership Retreat to educate, train and enhance the leadership qualities of its members in collaboration with the Yale University. Topics at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI)’s retreat at Yale’s New Haven, Connecticut, campus last week included team building, strategic planning and project management, according to an AAPI media release. SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis and leadership with the mental models and behaviors of abundance and scarcity, and delegation were among
other topics. There was also a “special discussion on relevance and reference to AAPI as it surges into a rapidly expanding role in the future,” according to Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar, , who became President of AAPI in June this year. Dr. Seema Jain, AAPI President-Elect, believes in “bridging the gap between clinical research and medical practice, which is central to AAPI’s mission.” “The Training at Yale was yet another way of providing opportunities for its members to grow and empower, especially for women leaders, who will guide AAPI to new heights,” she said. “Yale leadership program was very well attended and was very informative,” said Dr. Ajay Lodha, vice-president, AAPI.

Sikh woman facing a trial for the murder of her husband’s ex-wife in the United States, recently left many stunned by accusing her own reputed attorney of stopping her from revealing that her husband actually confessed to her killing that woman. Raminder Kaur, 64, was on trial for the murder last month. Her allegation against a reputed attorney, who has been a supervising attorney in the county’s public defender felony division, has left many in the legal circles around Maryland discussing: “Did her own attorney halt her from telling it, and could it have saved her from spending the rest of her life in prison?”, the Washington Post reported. The controversy marks the latest chapter in what already was one of the region’s most colorful murder trials this year, one that led to first-
degree murder convictions against Kaur and her husband, Baldeo Taneja, 63, a Ph.D.-level biostatistician. Both were found guilty on August 7 of killing Taneja’s former wife after the husband became furious about alimony payments. But less than two weeks after their convictions, Maryland’s Office of the Public Defender took the unusual step of immediately asking for a new trial on behalf of Kaur because of what it described as poor lawyering by her attorney.
“This client deserved a vigorous defense, and she didn’t get it,” Paul B. DeWolfe, the chief public defender, said this month about Drew, a staff attorney for the public defender’s office who was based in Montgomery County. Prosecutors have alleged that October 11, 2013, Kaur and Taneja travelled from their home in Tennessee state, spent the night at a Red Roof Inn near Gaithersburg, woke up and drove to the ex-wife’s nearby neighborhood.

RSS rapped BJP for breaking alliance, says Shiv Sena MUMBAI: The RSS has criticized the state BJP for snapping the 25-year-old partnership with it last week, the Shiv Sena said in its party mouthpiece on September 30. In a front-page revelation in Saamana, the Shiv Sena has said that three days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) broke the alliance, a secret meeting was held in south Mumbai. That evening on September 28, the BJP leaders sought the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) guidance on how to approach the electorate under the changed political scenario in Maharashtra where all the five major parties are now contesting independently. “Did you consult us before breaking
the alliance? Why is BJP running away form Hindutva? Or did you break it because of your selfish interests... This has created divisions among Hindus...,” the Sena quoted RSS leaders as saying at the closed-door meeting. Pulling up BJP leaders, the RSS seniors said they appeared least concerned about “serious issues like love jihad, land jihad, cow slaughter and (religious) conversions”. It also castigated the BJP over the move to admit several deserters from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to the party fold and even allotted them tickets for the forthcoming elections. “(NCP president) Sharad Pawar has divided the Marathis and sabotaged Hindutva forces...”

Addressing the Council of Foreign Relations, Prime Minister says US and India should believe how to work for each other’s benefit IANS, NEW YORK
I
ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 29 day said that terrorism in India was not “homegrown” and expressed regret that many countries have never understood the real danger of terrorism. He said terrorism is a danger that needs to be taken very seriously and India’s Muslims will not respond to Al Qaeda’s call. In a speech and later answering questions at the Council of Foreign Relations, a leading think tank, before leaving for Washington after two days in New York, Modi touched on relations between the US and India, which he likened to that between a husband and wife, “never 100 percent comfort”, and also highlighted his government’s policy of less government and more governance. Taking a dig at the US, Modi said that in the 1990s when he would speak to US State Department officials about terrorism, they would dismiss it as India’s law and order problem. But after 9/11 when he visited the US he was being sermonized about terrorism. “That means that unless and until

India’s terrorism not homegrown: Modi we have a bomb explosion we don’t understand what terrorism is.” “We are bothered by terrorism... it has been exported to our country, it is not homegrown. The Muslims in India, CNN had asked about it, India’s Muslims will fail the Al Qaeda,” he asserted. Terrorism is the enemy of humanity and anyone who believes
in humanity should come together to challenge the great danger of humanity, Modi said in answer to another question. The prime minister said India has been suffering from the effects of terrorism for the past 40 years and also referred to the jihadist terror group Islamic State and the beheading of journalists.
“We have suffered for 40 years from the effects of terrorism, it is such a deformity that we can’t imagine. And when we see it on TV when a journalist’s throat is being slit, and that in the 21st century such a heinous crime is being committed in front of us... And still we don’t challenge it... we have to believe in humankind, we have
15 to go together, terrorism is the enemy of humanity and anyone who believes in humanity needs to come together to combat terrorism,” he said. He said all countries need to overcome their divisions to combat the challenge of terrorism, and for that there is only one way - that the world should understand the danger of terrorism and those who believe in humanity should join hands. Modi also said there is no good terrorism and bad terrorism, and if we brand it like this then terrorism will take advantage of that. He gave the example of West Asia, saying the region was far ahead in prosperity, “but look at the situation now” — referring to the violence by the Islamic State and other groups. He said that the world should believe in one mantra — for prosperity for everyone and encourage tourism — to encourage peopleto-people contacts. Terrorism divides and tourism unites, and we want that we should meet and get to know each other,” Modi said. India has requested the US not to repeat its mistake of Iraq and instead withdraw gradually from Afghanistan till the country is able to stand on its own in order to prevent the Taliban from again becoming powerful, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday. To a question after his address at the Council of Foreign Relations here, Modi said the US and India “should believe how to work for each other’s benefit”. He said when he met US Secretary of State John Kerry, he explained to him at great length that Afghanistan is a big example where the two countries can work together.

ard selling India with assurances of a business-friendly environment and a stable and simpler tax regime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited top US business to come and invest in India. Addressing the US-India Business Council comprising 300 top US companies doing business with India here on September 30, he promised to replace bureaucratic red tape with a red carpet. The role of the government should be that of a facilitator,
Modi said wrapping up his five day trip to the US all through which he has made a strong pitch for investment in India with a promise of extensive use of technology better infrastructure and labor reforms. He invited US business leaders to come to India and join the “Make in India” campaign saying it’s a win-win situation as India is moving ahead with great speed. Since coming to office four months ago, Modi said his government had cleared a record number of foreign investments though admittedly it had not been possible to make a great many changes in
such a short span. Before coming to Washington Monday, Modi had breakfast meetings in New York with 11 CEOs, including those of Google, Citigroup and Pepsico. It was followed by one-on-one meetings with six other CEOs of companies like Boeing, IBM, GE and Goldman Sachs. There too he had made the same pitch: India is open-minded and wants change. “We want change, but a change that is not one sided” and he is discussing with citizens, industrialists and investors how to go about it. USIBC’s Indian-
American chairman Ajay Banga, who is also the CEO of MasterCard, expressing confidence that India-US trade can grow five fold from the current $100 billion in five years said: “The best days of US-India relations are coming.” US Chamber of Commerce president Tom Donohue also welcomed Modi’s commitment to replace “the red tape with the red carpet” and the government’s commitment to labor and tax reforms. Winding up his whirlwind fiveday US visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi “thanked” America for what he said was a highly
“successful and satisfactory trip” to the country. “Thank You America,” Modi said as he concluded his last official engagement at the USIBC. Then he directly left for the Andrews Air Force Base, from where his Air India One took off for New Delhi. “My visit has been very successful. From here I am going to airport directly,” Modi said. Modi was seen off at the airport by the Indian Ambassador to the US and the assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal.

ARTFORD (CT) -- Three of the six samples sent by the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested positive for Enterovirus-D68, the hospital said in a release Monday. “We already knew there was a strong possibility it was here,” said Dr. Nicholas Bennett, medical director of infectious diseases and immunology at Connecticut Children’s. “We sent in samples to help the CDC track the virus and its spread across the nation.” The hospital said news of the virus being detected would not change the way it provided care to patients.
Fire hits Newark airport flights BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EWARK (NJ) -- Flights have resumed in and out of Chicago, but more than twodozen arrivals and departures in Newark Liberty International Airport are cancelled even in the evening on September 29. An early morning fire in a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) control center in Aurora, Illinois led to a fivehour ground stoppage at O’Hare and Midway airports. Authorities found the man suspected of setting the fire in the basement with self-inflicted wounds as well as burns to his body. By midday, nearly 1,800 flights in and out of Chicago alone had been cancelled. As of 4 pm, 35 flights to and from Chicago and Newark airport were cancelled, said Ron Marisco, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In Newark, American Airlines had cancelled eight arrivals and eight departures through 8 pm, Marisco said. United Airlines cancelled five flights in and out of Newark through 4:30 pm. Southwest had cancelled five arrivals and four departures, Marisco said. Southwest flights are to and from Midway.
The CDC said that there was no specific treatment recommended for the illness caused by Enterovirus-D68 and that there was no vaccine.
“Because Enterovirus is a virus, there is no treatment, except for treatments for the wheezing, the same as you would for any other asthma attack,” said Dr. Bennett. “It seems to be easily treated and kids are generally getting better quickly, in a few days.” The hospital said parents should monitor their children for signs of the virus, which could include sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, aches and fever. Enterovirus-D68 typically lasts about a week in children and does not usually lead to lasting health issues.. A case of Enterovirus-D68 was reported on September 17 at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. It was the state’s first reported case of the virus.
The service will take requests for rides through an app and hopes to appeal to women who might feel uncomfortable with a male taxi driver. Potential riders will be asked if there is a woman in their party. If not, they’ll be automatically redirected to other car services. Stella Mateo is behind the livery service. Her husband is Fernando Mateo, founder of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers. The group represents 30,000 taxi and livery drivers. The mother of two says she was inspired to launch the service because she would have liked the support of a woman driver to help ferry her daughters between after-school activities.

AHWAH (NJ) -- The police on September 22 night arrested three Bronx men for passing counterfeit $100 bills and seized $2,000 in legitimate cash the trio apparently received as change from the bogus money. Christopher Moore, 27, Br yan Guillermo, 28, and Youraj Baljit, 29, have been charged with theft by deception and criminal simulation. Township police Chief James Batelli said the arrests came after officers were called to a Franklin Turnpike pizzeria, where two men ordered food and paid with what appeared to be a counterfeit $100 bill. Officer Keith Iorio was responding when he spotted a dark colored vehicle with New York plates heading north on Franklin Turnpike. Another Mahwah officer, Ryan Hill, found the vehicle at a nearby CVS, where they came upon Moore behind the wheel. “Moo re prov ide d in con si ste nt statements to the officers and stated he had traveled to the area by himself,” Batelli said in a statement.

After getting permission to search the vehicle, officers discovered bags of various good purchased from different stores. In checking with local merchants, the police said they learned a liquor store clerk had turned away three people matching the description of the men after they tried to buy a small bottle of alcohol with what looked like counterfeit $100 bills. Officers found a shirt matching the
description given by the pizza shop worker dumped in a trash bin at the CVS, according to Batelli. They also recovered a pizza box and nine more counterfeit $100 bills. Authorities fielded another report of a person who tried to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at a local gas station, the chief said. In that case, the person wasn’t charged because he received the bogus money from making change with a customer at a Dunkin Donuts in town.

STARS DESCEND ON TIMES SQUARE TO GLITZ UP MAHA TOURISM FETE BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK, NY - After months of anticipation, Maharashtra Tourism Diwali At Times Square organized by Event Guru finally kicked off on September 27. The festival began with a Ganpathi procession with Dhol Tasha led by Maharashtra Tourism, Ms. Neeta Bhasin, CEO of Event Guru, and prominent dignitaries such as Consul-General of India Dnyaneshwar Mulay, Congressman Joseph Crowley and Councilman Paul Vallone as well as visiting dignitaries from India. Besides the sponsors and vendors displaying their products and services throughout the day, the event featured mouth-watering food, free attractions for the kids, complimentary henna, turban tying demonstrations and much more. The title sponsor had an impressive booth display which showcased artifacts from Maharashtra, handicrafts, souvenirs, a photo booth, etc to attract the audience. Apart from the busy Diwali Bazaar, thrilling traditional Maharashtra acrobatic performers were invited to show the first female Dahi Handi and Malkhamb. The main stage had traditional performances by local dance troupes and wellknown singers and stars like Shaan and Shalmali. The evening show kicked off with the Wells Fargo sponsored pre-show, wherein famous choreographer, Marzi of the Shiamak Dawar Dance Company, kicked off the segment along with Culture Shock. The NASDAQ screen was used to display the Diwali smiles of the festival goers through photographs jtaken by Wells Fargo’s team of lensmen. The full on concert started with the interactive diya lighting on the Thomson Reuters Screen at 6pm. After that, star after star graced the stage at this year’s Diwali At Times Square concert. Names like Shaan, Shalmali, Aditya and
NJ youth held for false terror alarm BY A STAFF WRITER AIR LAWN (NJ) -- The police evacuated about 50 residents in the Radburn section of Fair Lawn on September 28 night after a 22-year-old man told authorities there was a biological weapon in his apartment. The incident, which occurred around 6:45 pm, prompted the response of numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Bergen County Police Bomb Squad. According to Detective Brian Meltzer, John Edwards III called 911 saying there was a biological weapon inside the apartment on High Street. Two police officers who were evacuating residents noticed Edwards attempting to scurry off. While detained, he told police that the biological weapon was in his kitchen. A search of the 22-year-old’s apartment found no weapons or material that could be used to make a weapon. Edwards was charged with making terroristic threats and creating a false public alarm. Bail was set at $15,000 with no 10 percent option. He was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus for evaluation.
Pankhudi, Sunny Brown, Mickey Singh, DJ Baba Kahn, Arjun, famous choreographer Marzi and the headliners – Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra lit up Times Square with their amazing performances all through-out the evening. They enthralled the audience with their melodious voices, exciting dance numbers and Bollywood glamour. Lights, camera, action all came to life on this one stage shared by so many talented performers. Aditya and Pankhudi of Pyar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara (A popular soap on Star Plus) did a romantic dance sequence. Sunny Brown, DJ Baba Kahn, Mickey Singh and Arjun energized the audience and they unveiled their new Diwali song which they composed specially for this event of which gaana.com was one of the sponsors. The highlight of the program was the performance by the Consul-General Dnyaneshwar Mulay and his poetry written specially for Diwali at Times Square. People from the audience were given a chance to come up on stage and interact with the hero and heroine from the new Yash Raj Films movie, Daawat-e-Ishq. One lucky audience member had the opportunity to be chosen by Parineeti Chopra as her Mr. Universe. The Air India sponsored autograph/photograph booth was a hotspot for all the stars and gave the fans the ability to interact with their favorite stars. Fans were able
to take pictures there with their favorite stars. Event Guru and its dynamic team did a tremendous job organizing and managing this event. Neeta Bhasin, president and CEO of Event Guru and ASB Communications, said: “We wanted to show the world the beauty of Diwali and the dynamic and exciting culture of India. As far as the eyes could see, there were people packed into every inch of Times Square that evening. Two men held for driving without certified licenses BY A STAFF WRITER
S
TATEN ISLAND (NY) -- Port Authority Police Department officers arrested two suspects who stand accused of driving without valid licenses near Staten Island bridges in two separate cases within an hour last week. Walter Bartsch, 42, of Tompkins Avenue in Tompkinsville, and Wayne Mc Intosh, 49, of Hyattsville, Md., each face charges of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in separate incidents, said Joe Pentangelo, senior Port Authority Police public information officer. At 6:10 p.m. on September 24, a Port Authority police officer in a marked auto allegedly saw Bartsch driving a blue, 2008 Honda at the intersection of Eaton Place and Innis Street under the Bayonne Bridge in Elm Park. Bartsch initially attracted the attention of the officer by using a cell phone while driving. The officer stopped Bartsch and asked for his license and vehicle insurance paperwork. After the suspect didn’t produce his driver’s license, a computer check revealed that the suspect’s license had been suspended four times and that he had two outstanding warrants on Staten Island. The suspect was placed under arrest and the vehicle was picked up by the owner. Less than an hour later, Port Authority police pulled over Mc Intosh on a traffic violation of not having a front plate and also an expired registration at the Outerbridge Crossing toll plaza. He was arrested for allegedly operating his Mercury sedan with a suspended driver’s license.

ILLIAMSPORT (PA) -- A Lycoming College honors graduate has agreed to plead guilty to helping a man take his three sons to Saudi Arabia illegally. A new charge of misprision of a felony was filed on September 24 in the US Middle District Court against Cori Lyn Mancuso, 22, of Stroudsburg. According to charging documents, she was aware of a felony and concealed it. A plea agreement also filed states the government will not make a
recommendation as to her sentence. The maximum she could receive is three years. Charges on which she was indicted in April of conspiracy to remove a child from the United States and three counts of international kidnapping are to be dismissed if the guilty plea goes through. Mancuso, who is free on personal recognizance, is accused of helping Majed Sayed flee the country with his sons on November 24 last in violation of a Lycoming County court order. Sayed was indicted on the same charges as Mancuso. Since the United States and Saudi Arabia do not have an extradition treaty
in child custody matters, Sayed will not be arrested unless he travels to a country that does. Interpol has been made aware of the arrest warrant, the FBI said. Mancuso was arrested April 1 after getting off a plane in New York City from Saudi Arabia. Sayed and Mancuso were married in an Islamic ceremony in Williamsport prior to him taking his sons to his native Saudi Arabia. The marriage is not considered legal in the United States or Saudi Arabia. The boys’ mother, Jessica Socling, of the Jersey Shore area, has been trying unsuccessfully to work with the Saudi embassy to get her sons back. Sayed, who was enrolled in a master’s degree program at Shippensburg University, had his sons for an approved visit but instead of returning them to Socling as required, he took them to Saudi Arabia on flight out of Washington’s Dulles Airport. Mancuso, a 2013 graduate from Lycoming College, flew on December 7 last to Saudi Arabia to join him, the April indictment states. She told the FBI Sayed planned the kidnapping beginning in October because Socling had used the American court system to gain custody and his ability to see his sons was limited, the indictment alleges.

STUNTS GIVE ME A HIGH, SAYS HRITHIK AHEAD OF
‘BANG BANG’ RELEASE BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK - Superstar Hrithik Roshan is all set to break records with his adventure romance BANG BANG which will release in more theaters in North America than any Bollywood film ever has done before. Opening on October 2, the globe-trotting action film reteams Hrithik Roshan with Katrina Kaif and has set the music charts ablaze with its string of smash-hit songs. The actor sat down recently to discuss his latest role in an interview: 1. Why did you decide to do Bang Bang? I always look to do something that is challenging and Bang Bang excited me right from the word go. It is a very special film for me, in fact, it is one of best films to date. Bang Bang has everything - action, romance, music, fun, adventure. It is a total entertainer and I enjoyed everything about this movie. It has been an honor to work with Siddharth Anand who has made this incredible movie and Katrina Kaif who I think is one of the most professional actors that I have worked with. Her dedication is unparalleled and that is why she is where she is today. 2. You have done some death-defying stunts in the film. Why take the risk? I love the adrenaline rush. I’m an extreme guy and I love doing the action myself. It gives me a high. I have never shot such action sequences in my life - it is definitely a first in Bollywood and I thoroughly enjoyed doing them. We had an incredible crew who took care of me when I was jumping of rooftops or driving a bike or the F1 car and water skiing while attached to a sea-plane or doing the
incredible stunt with the fly board that people are really loving. I mean I had a great time doing these extreme action stunts. The risk involved is the high but when you have a team that looks after you and makes sure that you are safe, there is nothing to worry. I trusted them with my eyes closed. 3. You said Bang Bang has everything but how would you describe the movie? Bang Bang has everything for everyone. It is a masala movie, a complete family entertainer. I know people are calling it an action film but to me it’s a romantic film at its core. Yes, there is action and incredible neverseen-before action but it revolves around a simple, beautiful love story between my character and Katrina’s. That’s the differentiator of the film. I loved the film when I read it and
G N I M O C P U
it was the love story in the middle of the thrill and action that attracted me a lot. 4. Everyone is going ga-ga about your MJ moves in the Bang Bang title track. Yes, the reaction to the song has been incredible and I thank everyone for the love that they have showered on me and Bang Bang. When Sid first told me about the concept, I wasn’t sure as no one can do what MJ did. But then I thought MJ was an inspiration to me and now that I’m getting a chance to give a tribute to him why should I not. I have given the God of dancing my humble tribute in my own style. I’m very happy that people are liking that. I have not tried to copy because you can’t copy MJ so I danced his moves in my own way and I had a blast. I love the title track. It’s subtle and a really cool dance number. And I

danced with all my heart and so did Katrina. She is an outstanding dancer and we had a great time dancing to this song. 5. Your chemistry with Katrina is being talked about a lot. Katrina and you team up after the successful Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. How was it working with her? I’m really happy that our pairing has been accepted by the audiences and that they are liking what we have done in Bang Bang. It was great working with her as usual. She is a fantastic co-worker. She is extremely professional, very hard-working and has great work ethics. If you see her career graph, these are the values that have made her one of the most successful actors today. Katrina is fun to work with and I hope people love the work that we have done in Bang Bang

Mary Kom strikes gold in Incheon Backed by a boisterous Indian crowd, Mary Kom, a mother of three, defeats her Kazakh opponent at Incheon Asian Games IANS, INCHEON

ndia's M.C. Mary Kom punched her way to India's first women's boxing gold in Asian Games, defeating Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (48-51kg) final here on October 1. Mary, a five-time World Champion, defeated Shekerbekova 2-0, with one judge scoring the bout 38-38 in the 17th Asian Games at the Seonhak Gymnasium. The 31-year-old Indian took some time to be at her attacking best and got just 27 points in the first round. Backed by a boisterous Indian crowd, Mary Kom, a mother of three and police officer in India's northeastern state of Manipur, banked upon her experience and mixed aggression with caution to counter the speed of her 25-year-old opponent. Mary Kom, a bronze medallist from the 2012 London Olympics, won the second round 29-28. The Indian boxer kept her intensity up in the third round as well and while the Kazakh girl looked physically stronger, her jabs and punches lacked accuracy that helped the Indian to take the third

iscus thrower Seema Punia and the mixed doubles tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Saketh Myneni brought home the gold medals for India as seven medals came in on what was an impressive Monday for India at the 17th Asian Games. Myneni teamed up with Sanam Singh to win the silver in the men's doubles while wrestler Bajrang bagged the second silver of the day in the men's freestyle 61kg. Middle-distance runners O.P.Jaisha, Naveen Kumar, wrestler Narsingh Pancham Yadav won the bronze medals. Seema gave the first gold medal from the track and field event while the day, which rather started slow, ended on a golden note as Myneni completed a memorable Asian Games campaign for the country bagging two medals — a mixed doubles gold — partnering Sania — after winning the men's

doubles silver with Sanam — at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts. Seema, a silver medallist in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, hurled the metal disc to 61.03 meters in her fourth attempt to win the gold medal while her team mate Krishna Poonia, bronze medallist in 2006 and 2010 Asian Games, finished fourth with a below par 55.57m. Chinese Xiaoxin Lu (59.35m) and Jian Tan (59.03m) picked up the silver and bronze, respectively.
itated her historic win. Overall, the first and the third judge favoured Mary, bronze medallist in 2010 Asiad, with scores of 39-37 while the second judge gave a tie 38-38. With this win, Mary Kom, who took some time off the ring after the London Olympics due to the birth of her third child, completed her comeback and also gave a fitting reply to Indian officials who had dropped her name from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in August.
INCHEON: Indian wrestler Bajrang had to remain content with the silver medal after losing his final bout while his compatriot Narsingh Pancham Yadav clinched the bronze in the 17th Asian Games at the Dowon Gymnasium here Monday. Bajrang lost the men’s freestyle 61kg final 1-3 to Iranian Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari and settled for the silver medal. After a short while, Bajrang’s compatriot, Yadav won the bronze medal in the freestyle 74kg beating Japan’s Daisuke Shimada in a play-off match. Yadav was trailing his opponent 12 after the first period. The second period turned out to be an interesting battle that saw the Indian make a come-from-behind victory. The Indian
grappler lost a challenge in the second round giving Shimada a total of four points that also helped the Japanese open a 7-5 lead. However, Yadav was in no mood to give up and quickly drew parity at 7-7 and stretch the bout to additional 35 seconds and pulled it off in style winning 10-7. Yadav was declared the winner 3-1 on the basis of classification points. Meanwhile, Indian boxer L. Sarita Devi lost her semi-final bout in controversial circumstances and had to be content with the bronze medal in the women’s light weight (57-60kg) event. The 32-year-old Indian lost 0-3 in an unanimous decision to South Korea’s Jina Park at the Seonhak Gymnasium.
No tee time for Indian golfers in Asian Games INCHEON: Indian golfers fared badly in the 17th Asian Games as both the men’s and the women’s teams finished sixth and tied eighth respectively at the Dream Park Country Club here on September 28. The men’s team of Manu Gandas, Mane, Feroz Garewal and Samarth Dwivedi carded 211 in the fourth round to take its total to 839. Mane scored three under 69 while Gandas contributed 71. Samarth came up with 71 and Feroz scored the lowest 73. The best three scores are taken into account for the team event. Gandas, Garewal and Dwivedi finished 11th, joint 19th and 32nd, respectively in the individual event. The team gold went to Chinese Taipei while South Korea and Thailand won silver and bronze. The individual gold was clinched by Tsung Cheng Pan of Chinese Taipei, who scored 271 and the silver was won by South Korea’s Namhun Kim, who scored 273 to finish ahead of Chinese Taipei’s Yan Chun Yu. — IANS

our members of the Incheon Asian Games medal-winning Indian squash team —Dipika Pallikal, Joshna Chinappa, Harinder Pal Sandhu and Aparajitha Balamurukan — were accorded a rousing welcome on their arrival here in the wee hours of September 28. They were accompanied by officials S. Maniam, national coach Cyrus Poncha, Bhuvaneswari and
physio Arthi. The members were received by sports officials, coaches of the Indian Squash Academy and a few trainees. Speaking of his experience, the member of the gold-medal winning men’s squad, Harinder said: “I certainly played the best match of my career. Winning the gold was a dream come true. I had never played this opponent Iskandar Mohammed Azlan Bin before, but the coaches and Saurav also gave me enough tips on how to handle him.
