MUMBAI: As Indian team is ready to fire from all its cylinders to defend the Champions Trophy, a lot of discontent is reported in the dressing room with the captain expressing lack of confidence in the head coach. Speculations were rife since the BCCI chose not to extend the tenure of Anil Kumble as the head coach and had advertised the position. It is reported that the decision to advertise the position was made was made following feedback from Virat Kohli about Kumble's coaching method, which he is said to have described as "intimidating", espncricinfo reported. The players' concerns are thought to centre mainly around Kumble's man-management skills. Kumble has been conducting himself like a "headmaster" at a school.

South Africa, who are often labelled as chokers due to their poor record in ICC events, will also be looking for a fresh start. With AB de Villiers, Quinton de

s the high-octane ICC Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan draws closer, veteran India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has picked India as the favorites besides counting pacer Mohammed Shami as the key to the prospects of the men-in-blue in the June 1-18 tournament in England and Wales. Irfan, who was part of the victorious India side which lifted the Champions Trophy in 2013, said the mantra of success in English conditions is to hit the seam well, which he felt the in-form Indian pacers, led by Mohammed Shami, are capable of. “What’s important in England is to hit the seam well. If you can keep bowling in the right areas and hit the seam, I think that’s the best way to go for the bowlers,” the 32year-old told IANS.

Trump to nominate former Assistant AG as FBI head

IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US Senate Intelligence Committee has released a statement from former FBI director James Comey, which revealed five exchanges between him and US President Donald Trump since election day. The seven page statement, which the former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director was due to formally deliver in a hearing on Thursday, offered the accounts of three one-on-one meetings and two phone calls Comey had with Trump since this year, Xinhua news agency reported. The exchanges, which took place on January 6, January 27, February 14, March 30 and April 11, focused mainly on the FBI’s ongoing investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign, in particular former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, and Russia. According to Comey’s recollection, Trump has asked the FBI to stop its investigation on Flynn, who resigned in February after his inappropriate contacts with a Russian diplomat came to light. “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,” the statement quoted Trump as saying in the February 14 meeting. Comey said he had replied that “he is a good guy”, but did not say that he would “let this go.”

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced this week that he plans to nominate Christopher A. Wray, a former US Assistant Attorney General under President George W. Bush, to be the next FBI director. Wray, currently a litigation partner at DC-based law firm King & Spalding, would replace acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who took over when James Comey was fired by Trump in May, Fox News reported. “I will be nominating Christopher A. Wray, a man of impeccable cre-

dentials, to be the new Director of the FBI. Details to follow,” Trump tweeted. The announcement comes ahead of a Senate hearing where McCabe, among others, was set to testify. Fired Federal Bureau of Investigation boss James Comey also was set to testify before a Senate committee on June 8. Wray will need Senate confirmation to take over as the FBI chief. Wray headed the Justice Department’s criminal division from 2003 to 2005 under Bush.

The proposal’s main entitlement programs affected by Trump’s plan is Medicaid.

US President won’t block Comey from testifying WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will not block James Comey, former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), from testifying before Congress over the Russia probe, the White House said. “In order to facilitate a swift and thorough examination of the fact sought by the Senate Intelligence Committee, President Trump will not

ing his ability to act on behalf of the country,” the statement said of Trump in the March 30 phone call, adding that Trump had asked

how to “lift the cloud”. During their dinner on January 27, Trump asked Comey for loyalty, to which Comey pledged honesty. The two men later agreed that Comey would give “honest loyalty” to Trump, despite Comey admitting later that “it is possible we understood the phrase honest loyalty differently.” Comey also said all of the records were made immediately after each exchanges based on Comey’s memory, implying that there were no recordings on Comey’s side. The White House has said it would not exercise executive privilege to prevent Comey from testifying in front of Congress.

Trump proposes plan to improve US infrastructure IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has presented a plan to improve the country’s infrastructure and once again make the US a nation of “builders”, giving authorities more freedom of action, fewer environmental regulations and private support. “It’s time to recapture our legacy as a nation of builders,” Trump said this week in Cincinnati on the bank of the Ohio River to business and union leaders, as well as workers in the mining and steelmaking sectors. We will “create new lanes of travel, commerce, and discovery, and we’re going to see all the way

into the future, which is going to be beautiful, and ... bright,” he said. According to Trump, during his election campaign he saw infrastructure all over the country was “crumbling” and he found communities were “desperate” for new highways and bridges, Efe news reported. Saying that the American public deserves the best infrastructure in the world, the President, who made his own fortune in the construction industry, said that the federal government in recent years has spent “billions and billions” of dollars abroad while leaving such projects at home by the wayside. “We will not be content to allow

our nation to become a museum for former glories,” Trump said. “We will construct incredible new monuments to American grit and inspire wonder for generations and generations. We will build because our prosperity demands it and above all we will build because that is how we make America great again.” According to the White House, the US infrastructure system has fallen to 12th place in the world ranking. Trump’s proposal includes $200 billion in federal spending for infrastructure within the trillion dollars he intends to see invested in such projects with the help of the private sector.

It’s time to recapture our legacy as a nation of builders, Trump said. (Photo: IANS)

The President also said that he wants to drastically reduce the wait time for approval of infrastructure projects, which were slowed down due to environmental regulations that have raised costs and pushed back completion dates, according

to the White House. Trump called upon Republicans and Democrats in Congress to join together to approve the investments needed in infrastructure, but his proposal has already been questioned by some lawmakers.

India rubbishes Trump’s claim Paris accord not for money, says External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj

Youth from Telangana shot, critically injured in US

IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia has rubbished US President Donald Trump’s charge that it signed the Paris climate accord to get “billions and billions and billions” of dollars from developed nations. “This is completely not true,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said about Trump’s claim while announcing the US exit from the Paris deal. Trump alleged that India had made its participation in the accord contingent on receiving foreign aid from developed countries. Sushma Swaraj, however, said the American move on the Paris climate agreement had not changed IndiaUS ties and the relationship between the two countries was progressing as it did during Barack Obama’s presidency. “India signed the Paris agreement because of Indian culture and ethos and not under duress or out of greed (for monetary benefits). We are committed to the environment and this commitment is 5,000 years old,” she told reporters at a press conference here

Presidential election in India on July 17 NEW DELHI: The election of the next President will be held on July 17, the Election Commission announced on Wednesday setting in motion the process to Pranab Mukherjee choose the successor to Pranab Mukherjee. Counting of votes will take place on July 20. Announcing the schedule at a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said the filing of nomination will begin on June 14 and the last date for the purpose will be June 28. Scrutiny will take place on June 29 and the last date for withdrawal is July 1. “The date on which polling will be held, if required, is July 17. Counting, if required, will be done on July 20,” he said. The term of Mukherjee, the country’s 13th President, will end on July 24. Zaidi said members of the electoral college — comprising members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and state assemblies, including Delhi and Puducherry — will be provided special pens to cast their ballot and use of any other pen will render the vote invalid.

HYDERABAD: A youth from Telangana was critically injured when unidentified assailants fired at him in the United States, his family said here on June 8. Mubeen Ahmed (26), a native of Sangareddy district, was on June 4 shot twice in the stomach at a California store where he works, though the family came to know about it only on June 8. He family said that some men

went to the store posing as customers and got into an argument with Mubeen before firing at him. An injured Mubeen was rushed to a California hospital, where he underwent surgery. to highlight the achievements of Narendra Modi government in the last three years. She said that to accuse India of signing the agreement because it was pressurized by some countries or out of greed for foreign aid is completely baseless and unfortunate. “I would like to officially make this clear. I clearly dismiss both accusations.” The Minister said she has always

respected, even worshipped, nature and would be “committed to the Paris agreement, irrespective of what the US decides”. On President Trump’s executive order for tightening the rules of the H-1B visa program that could affect Indian professionals going to America for better employment and impact India’s $150 billion IT industry, the Minister said New Delhi was in talks with US Con-

gress and Trump administration officials. “Yes, the concern is there. We are talking to members of the Congress. Efforts are on to make sure the Trump administration’s move doesn’t impact Indians,” she said and added that no changes have been made in the visa policy “as of now”. “There are amendments that cannot be made through executive orders,” she asserted and denied

that the proposed changes in the policy had affected India’s ties with the US. The Minister said the relationship between India and the US since Trump took charge were growing with the “same speed” as was the case when Barack Obama was President. “There has been no change (in the ties). We are moving forward as we were moving.” She said India and US have a relationship “of mutual benefit”.

Modi in Kazakhstan, to meet Jingping; India to become full SCO member ASTANA, IANS

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on June 8 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and held his first bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On June 9, India and Pakistan were expected to be granted full membership of the SCO which also includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India has been a observer to the SCO since 2005. Soon after his arrival here, Modi called on Nazarbayev and discussed ways to expand bilateral ties. “Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan met PM @narendramodi and discussed ways to expand bilateral ties,” the Prime Minister's Office tweeted. On Friday, Modi was also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Summit. Modi said full membership of the SCO would help India in terms of connectivity and economic and counter-terror cooperation with the Eurasian bloc. Stating that once India becomes a

full member of the SCO, the bloc “will represent over 40 per cent of humanity and nearly 20 per cent of global GD”, Modi said in a predeparture statement: “ I look forward to deepening India's association with the SCO which will help us in economic, connectivity and counter-terrorism cooperation, among other things.” He said India launched the process of full membership of the SCO in the Tashkent meeting last year.

Modi said that India has longstanding relations with SCO members and he looked forward to “progressing them further through the SCO for mutual betterment and growth of our countries and our people”. “Together, we will harvest new opportunities for beneficial engagement and redouble efforts to address common challenges that may come in the way of realizing our full potential,” the Prime Minister said.

According to G.V. Srinivas, Joint Secretary (Eurasia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, India has signed 38 documents of accession to become a member of the bloc. “There are broadly two legs of collaboration which are being pursued in the SCO platform,” Srinivas said. “One is trade, economy, connectivity, energy, transport, banking, that set of issues,” he said. “The second thing is, of course, the fight against terrorism.”

Will US withdrawal stop India’s actions against climate change? The withdrawal of US support to the Green Climate Fund would substantially reduce the resources available to it, and so will inhibit acceleration of climate actions in developing countries, including India AJAY MATHUR, NEW DELHI

W

ill the US withdrawal from the Paris agreement impact India’s efforts to tackle climate change? To a limited extent, yes. Will it stop India’s actions against climate change? No. President Trump’s announcement of the US withdrawal from the Paris agreement leaves a huge void in the global efforts to stabilize our climate. The US is by far the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gases, and its actions in reducing emissions are central to global efforts to address climate change. The Paris Agreement had provided an innovative framework for all the countries of the world to pledge what they could do to address climate change; it brought all countries on board, with each country pledging what it expected to achieve. The sum total of all the pledges made at Paris are clearly not sufficient to ensure that global temperature rise remains well below two degrees Celsius, which scientists believe is the maximum to prevent irreversible climate change. The absence of the US leadership would delay actions to address climate change in that country itself, as

U.S. President Donald Trump delivering a speech at the White House in Washington D.C. where he said that he has decided to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement, a landmark global pact to fight climate change.

well as in other countries to reduce global emissions and to adapt to the adverse impacts of the climate change that has already occurred. Climate action, whether to mitigate emissions or adapt to adverse impacts of climate change, requires access to financial resources and

technology. New technologies that would address these issues are always more expensive than technologies currently in use, and the countries of the world have created the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to manage these costs. The withdrawal of US support

to the GCF would substantially reduce the resources available to it, and so will inhibit acceleration of climate actions in developing countries, including India. The US will now put out more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than it would have had it remained

in the Agreement. This will have adverse impacts for India and many other vulnerable countries. In any case we have to manage the unavoidable climate change that has occurred due to the carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere. This would be further exacerbated, implying that India would need to enhance its adaptation actions so that it can continue to manage the impact of inaction or delayed action in the US. The good news is that the last few years have seen a major downward trend in the prices of renewable energy and energy efficiency, the pillars for action to combat climate change. These positive trends suggest that climate mitigation is becoming increasingly viable across the world — and, as a result, many countries, and many states in the US, are preferentially moving towards larger shares of renewables in their energy mix. This trend will continue across the world and in the US, irrespective of the US decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement. The favorables long-term trends in the costs of renewables and energy efficiency are clear. Chances are, the world, US included, would transition to low and zero carbon technologies ahead.

s per the latest global report on childhood, 31 million of India's children are a part of its workforce, the highest number in the world. This, along with early marriage and parenthood and lack of education, has pushed India to 116th position among 172 nations assessed for threats to childhood, according to the recent Stolen Childhoods report by Save the Children, an international non-profit working for marginalized and deprived children. Globally, 700 million children have had their childhood curtailed early, said the report which was released on June 1, the eve of International Children's Day.

Three of India's neighboring countries did better on the index — Sri Lanka was ranked 61, Bhutan, 93 and Myanmar, 112. Nepal (134), Bangladesh (134) and Pakistan (148) fared worse than India. The index focuses on a set of

CHARI IS NEXT ASTRONAUT IN THE MAKING

BRIEFS Lawyer dies after being hit by train WASHINGTON: An Indian-origin lawyer died after he was hit by a train at a crossing in a northern California town. Kirtee Kapoor, the head of Davis Polk & Wardwell's India group and a partner at the firm in Menlo Park, California, died in the accident near Atherton, the Mercury News reported. Indian-origin lawyer Kirtee Kapoor is survived by his wife and daughter, who live in Menlo Park.

fter screening a record 18,000 applications, the US space agency has finally picked 12 astronaut candidates — its largest astronaut class since 2000 — and IndianAmerican Raja Chari, a Lieutenant Colonel with the US Air Force, has bagged a most sought-after seat. If all goes well, Chari may become the third person of Indian origin from the US after the late Kalpana Chawla and current NASA astronaut Sunita 'Suni' Williams to fly to space. Shawna Pandya, a Canada-born neurosurgeon, is also in the race to go on a space mission with NASA after being shortlisted under its 2018 Citizen Science Astronaut (CSA) programme earlier this year. The selected 12 - seven men and

five women — will be trained for missions into the Earth orbit and conduct key research for deep space missions, including Mars. The term astronaut candidate refers to individuals who have been selected for the NASA astronaut corps and are currently undergoing a training programme at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Chari, who will report for duty in August this year, graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1999 with bachelor's degrees in astronautical engineering and engineering science. Hailing from the state of Iowa, he earned a Master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated from the US Naval Test Pilot School as well as from US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Indian-origin Leo Varadkar set to become first gay PM of Ireland IANS, DUBLIN

I ACCRA (GHANA): An Indian origin charitable organization, Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF), has provided public healthcare to over three million disadvantaged children and adults in Nigeria. TCF achieved the feat in the past two decades through its three key programmes: Mission for Vision, Mission for Primary Health and Mission for Water. TCF, which started operations in 1994, is the charity wing of the Chanrai family which set up the first Indian company in Nigeria in 1923. The company has since become one of the most successful and respected business houses in the country.

The TCF report for 2015-16 said the Chanrai family has businesses in the areas of trade, manufacturing, agriculture and finance and currently employs about 30,000 people in Nigeria. It is one of the largest employer of local staff among the private sector in Nigeria. The Nigerian government has accorded TCF the status of an International NGO. Since its inception, the TCF report said, more than 100,000 eye surgeries had been performed in Nigeria, restoring vision to the poor. Also, over 1.5 million mothers and children have been provided access to basic healthcare services.

ndian-origin and openly gay Leo Varadkar is set to succeed Enda Kenny, who has been taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland since 2011. Varadkar was elected as leader of Ireland’s Fine Gael, the country’s biggest political party. Varadkar secured 60 per cent of the total weighted vote in the contest while his only rival Simon Coveney, minister for housing, planning, community and local government, only took 40 per cent. In mid May, Kenny retired as leader of Fine Gael under pressure from both inside and outside of the party. In a statement after Varadkar’s victory, Kenny congratulated his successor as leader of Fine Gael, saying that he wanted to extend his “heartiest” congratulations to Varadkar. “This is a tremendous honor for him and I know he will devote his life to improving the lives of people across our country. He will have my full support in the work that lies ahead,” Kenny said. The current taoiseach said he will now provide a “brief but appropri-

I know that Leo has the capacity to provide the leadership required in order to achieve this,” Kenny said. Varadkar, while delivering his victory speech, said he was honored to be elected as party leader.

He said it is the start of a more democratic, more engaged and more inclusive Fine Gael party. Earlier, his only rival Coveney pledged full support to the new party leader. Coveney said Varadkar was a worthy winner of the contest and that he would work side by side with him to do everything he could to help the new leader. Protest against cops’ savagery Fresh violence erupted in Madhya Pradesh after police kills eight farmers who were demanding relief from debts and higher crop prices

Rahul detained in Mandsaur

Sena seeks waiver of farm loans MUMBAI: Building further pressures on major ruling ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena stayed away from a state cabinet meeting, reiterating its demand that the government immediately announce a full waiver of farm loans. Senior Sena leader and minister Subhash Desai said the decision was taken to highlight the government’s “indifference” to the cause of farmers of the state, who are on an indefinite strike for the past one week. “We met and informed the Chief Minister that we shall not attend cabinet meetings till the government announces a waiver of farmers’ loans,” Desai told reporters. Playing down the issue, senior BJP Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that the Sena ministers met Fadnavis and took leave of absence. “They had informed of their intention to keep away from the cabinet and informed us the reasons for it. Since there were no major issues to be discussed, they were permitted,” Mungantiwar said. The development came amid speculation that the CM was planning to take up the issue of holding mid-term assembly elections in the state with BJP President Amit Shah, who is coming for a threeday visit to Mumbai next week. This is first time that Sena has skipped a cabinet meeting, indicating the worsened relations between the two major allies over several issues, the latest being the farmers’ strike.

F

resh violence erupted in Madhya Pradesh as protesting farmers indulged in arson, a day after the police gunned down up to eight peasants demanding relief from debts and higher crop prices. Hundreds defied curfew in Mandsaur where police opened fire at a mob of farmers, leaving five dead according to official count and eight according to farmer leaders. And some 200 km away, a group of farmers marched to a police station in Dewas district and set fire to vehicles parked there. The government of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tried to douse the fires by announcing financial compensation for those killed in the violence and said he was ready for talks with farmers. “I am a farmer and understand your problems. You can be assured your government will implement all promises,” Chouhan tweeted, urging people to maintain calm and not pay heed to rumors.

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has promised to double farmers’ income by the end of his first term in 2019, met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The Home Ministry has sent 1,100 anti-riot police to Madhya Pradesh. The extra forces would be deployed in violence-hit Ujjain, Dewas, Mandsaur, Neemuch and Sehore, an official said. But tension was still high as angry farmers blocked roads and also attacked two senior officials at Mandsaur. Mobile connectivity has been cut and thousands of police in riot gear were deployed. Mandsaur District Magistrate Swatantra Kumar Singh and Indore Superintendent of Police O.P. Tripathi were roughed up when they reached Barkheda Pant where the farmers were squatting on a road with the body of one of those killed. The ruling BJP accused the

MANDSAUR: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was detained when he tried to defy ban orders enforced in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district where five protesting farmers were killed in police firing. He was taken into preventive custody by the police in Neemuch district which borders Rajasthan. Before his detention, Gandhi charged the Narendra Modi government with writing off the loans of rich industrialists to the tune of Rs 1,50,000 crore but did not waive the loans of poor farmers. “He (Modi) can’t waive farmers’ loans, he can’t give them rate. He can’t give them bonus. He can’t give them water. Kisan ko sirf goli de sakhta hai (He can only give bullets to farmers),” Gandhi said. Asked who was responsible for the farmers’ plight, Gandhi said: “Both. Narendra Modi and Chief Minister (Shivraj Singh Chouhan).” Earlier, in a series of tweets Gandhi said: “Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments are doing their best to prevent me from entering Madhya Pradesh and meeting the families of the farmers killed in

Congress of inciting the violence “The violence is very unfortunate. The Congress is trying to give it a political angle,” Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said. The Congress and the Left said the deaths in Madhya Pradesh proved that the Modi government had no strategy to help debt-ridden farmers in a drought-hit region. “Farmers were seeking loan waivers and right price, but the BJP killed them. This is the sad

Mandsaur.” “Which law of the land says that it is illegal to stand in solidarity with farmers who were killed simply for demanding what is their right?” the Congress leader asked. Earlier, Gandhi sent his security personnel into a tizzy after he took a bike ride to reach Mandsaur to meet the families of the dead farmers. Gandhi entered Madhya Pradesh by car from Rajasthan in a cavalcade of Congress leaders and activists. As he entered Neemuch, he saw a group of policemen near a toll plaza deployed to stop him. He immediately switched over to a motorcycle and gave them — as well as his own NSG personnel — the slip. A party activist drove the bike. Congress leader Sachin Pilot also took a motorcycle and followed Gandhi.

reality of Mandsaur,” Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have been protesting crop prices since June 1, complaining that their incomes have not risen despite steady hike in agricultural production. The demands for loan waiver gained momentum after the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath waived off nearly Rs 36,400 crore worth of farmers’ debt.

he one-day special Kerala Assembly session began with a quick beef fry breakfast as lawmakers were set to discuss the Centre’s new cattle trade and slaughter rules. The Kerala legislators started their day at the assembly canteen here before heading to debate on the new central rule that they say infringes upon the states’ rights. An employee of the canteen told IANS on normal working days when the assembly is in session generally beef is served only after 11 a.m.

“But today, with the session wholly devoted to discussing the beef issue, we brought 10 kg of beef early in the morning. By now a

good number of MLAs have already had beef fry before heading to the assembly floor,” said the employee on condition of anonymity.

“Devikulam CPI-M legislator S. Rajendran was the first to be served steaming hot beef fry,” the canteen attendant said. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan began the daylong session by moving a resolution against the manner in which the Centre has gone ahead floating the new rule in May. “This new rule is nothing but a blatant violation on the rights of individuals to eat what they wish and want. This new rule will hugely affect the agrarian society of our state and also our country,” Vijayan said. “To take care of a cow that has

stopped giving milk, a farmer has to spend Rs 40,000. A huge majority of our society are non-vegetarians and this new law is in no way acceptable to us,” the Chief Minister added. Former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan also slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (BJP-RSS) combine for the “senseless” new law on beef. “This is nothing but a fraud. It has been supported by fraud Swami’s for various reasons best known to them. The BJP has an agenda to castrate certain rules,” Achuthanandan said.

AN EXEMPLARY LIFE Mahant Swami Maharaj has been continuing the legacy of Pramukh Swami Maharaj ever since his earthly departure with an extraordinary willingness. As the sixth and the current spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan his life and times have been an example for millions. He was born in the year 1933 in Jabalpur,

the same values even as a child and was blessed by Shastriji Maharaj, the founder of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. He attended his school in Jabalpur and went on to attend College of Agriculture in Anand, Gujarat. When he was in college, he was attracted to the life and teachings of Yogiji Maharaj, the then spiritual leader and guru of BAPS. Called by the nickname of Vinu, that his family gave him, Vinubhai spent his summer holidays with Yogiji Maharaj, where he imbibed the values of the guru. He was inspired to lead a monastic life and at the age of 24 he got parshad diksha and was also renamed Vinu Bhagat. During his early years spent under the guidance of Yogiji, he whole-heartedly looked after Yogiji Maharaj’s correspondence with his devotees. During this time, Yogiji was particularly impressed with Vinu

work and once on his 48th birthday he spoke about Mahant Swami in glorious terms stating: “I feel at peace when I see Mahant Swami.” Mahant Swami kept the utmost regard for the trust Pramukh Swami

Mahant Swami Maharaj will be participating in some of the most important and auspicious events during his stay in Chicago Maharaj. During that time he was amongst the 51 most extraordinary youth selected for initiation in the monastic order of life. The group was placed in Mumbai to study Sanskrit and Keshavjivandas Swami was appointed as their group head and also the mahant of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Mumbai. It is from here that he began to be fondly known as Mahant Swami – a name that continues to give a spiritual reverence to countless men and women. Yogiji Maharaj found in Mahant Swami an extraordinary diligence towards their mission and he would often cite his example to other members of the group. He was won over by Mahant Swami’s discipline, devotion and spiritual discourses. He placed innate trust in Mahant Swami. Mahant Swami’s dedication impressed many senior swamis too. His love for an aesthetic way to please the God was reflected in his practice of making garlands ad hindolas or swings for the God. His quest for doing the best was so profound that while making garlands he used to painstakingly ensure that the flowers are of the same size and color to maintain symmetry. It was in 1951, that Mahant Swami had the pleasure of meeting Pramukh Swami Maharaj and he traveled extensively with him. After Yogiji Maharaj passed away, Mahant Swami Maharaj served under Pramukh Swami Maharaj in various religious activities across the world. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was moved over by Mahant Swami’s hard

had in him. In July 2012, Pramukh Swami Maharaj revealed in presence of other senior swamis in Amdavad, Gujarat that Mahant Swami Maharaj would be his spiritual successor upon his own passing. Just like his guru Mahant Swami Maharaj is a shining beacon of all the extraordinary values and principles that were promoted by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Despite being the leader of such a large spiritual organization his humility is a quality that is worth taking a lesson from for all human beings. VISITS TO AMERICA During his previous visit to America, Mahant Swami Maharaj has always set a meaningful example. From his events to festivities that he has been a part of everything follows the legacy of the spiritual gurus and instills in his followers a sense of renewed faith and trust. Back in 1977, when he came to America with Pramukh Swami Maharaj he travelled in a car all the way from New York to Los Angeles visiting homes of devotees. He spent Diwali and Annakut in Flushing, NY. He came again in 1986, for the groundbreaking for Houston Mandir and spent Diwali and Annakut in LA. In 1990, he was on an elaborate tour when he visited 49 states in USA and attended the kickoff ceremony of Cultural Festival of India ceremony in Manhattan. He was also involved in the Murti Pratistha in Toronto and Boston. In 1991 he was back again for

Cultural Festival of India in Edison, NJ and also for Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Platinum Tula in NJ. He attended the Raksha bandhan festival in Atlanta in 1995 and again travelled to 36 centers in America in 1997 including Murti Pratistha in Birmingham, Al. In 2002 he celebrated Diwali and Annakut in Houston Texas and was present for Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s 82nd birthday celebrations in San Jose, CA. During 2011-12 he attended North America Shilanyas ceremony in Robbinsville, NJ and spent Diwali and Annakut in LA. CT 2017: Sri Lankan batting trumps India Mendis was the highest scorer with 89 runs off 93 balls; India must beat South Africa to qualify for the semis IANS, LONDON

S

ri Lanka rode on a solid batting display to register a seven-wicket victory over India in their Group B Champions Trophy match at The Oval here. Set a challenging target of 322 runs, the Lankans rode on halfcenturies from Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka to cross the line in 48.3 overs and register their first win the tournament. The duo dominated the Indian bowlers to add 159 runs between them and lay the foundation of a successful run chase. Mendis was the highest scorer among the Sri Lankans, producing a steady 89 runs off 93 balls before being run out thanks to an excellent piece of fielding by Indian pacer Buvneshwar Kumar off

Brief scores: India 321-6 in 50 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 125, Rohit Sharma 78, MS Dhoni 63; Lasith Malinga 2-70, Thisara Parera 1-54). Sri Lanka 322-3 in 48.2 overs (Kusal Mendis 89, Danushka Gunathilaka 76, B Kumar 1/54).

However, Mendis joined Gunathilaka in the middle and the duo proceeded to turn things around with some superb batting. After Gunathilaka’s dismissal, Mendis and Kusal Perera added

26 runs between them off 29 balls. However, poor communication between them coupled with an accurate throw by Bhuvneshwar Kumar deprived Mendis of what would have been an extremely well-deserved century. Angelo Mathews joined Perera in the middle to produce another crucial partnership for Sri Lanka. The duo added 75 runs between off just 62 deliveries before Perera had to retire due to an injury to his right hamstring. Perera scored 47 runs off 44 balls with five hits to the fence. Mathews continued to battle on and remained unbeaten on 52 at the end. He received excellent support from Asela Gunaratne who scored a quickfire 34 runs off 21 balls with two boundaries and a couple of sixes.

ndia earned a hard fought 2-0 win over Nepal in an international friendly match at the Mumbai Football Arena here. Goals from Sandeep Jhingan and Jeje Lalpekhula sealed the match for India. Jhingan broke the deadlock in the 60th minute followed by a clinical finish from Jeje in the 77th minute which allowed India win a match which saw them miss quite a few scoring chances. Placed 69 spots below 100th

ranked India, Nepal gave the hosts an extremely tough time throughout the game. The hosts had the better start and dominated the first half. Even though the Nepal defense did commit the occasional error, poor finishing ensured that the Indians were unable to take the lead in the first half. Though India showed appreciable fluidity in midfield and were equally solid in defense, their were decidedly below par in the final third.

ndian star Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski have won a tough three-set battle to clinch the mixed doubles title at the French Open tennis tournament here. The seventh seeded Indo-Canadian combination overcame the unseeded pair of Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Robert Farah of Colombia 2-6, 62, 12-10 in 56 minutes. Bopanna is the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam title after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza. Bopanna is also the fourth Indian to become mixed doubles champion at the French Open. Bhupathi was the first — he won the title with Rika Hiraki of Japan in 1997. Bhupathi achieved the feat for a second time in 2012 with Sania Mirza before Paes partnered Swiss star Martina Hingis to win the title last year. Indians have now won a total of 20 mixed doubles titles at Grand Slam tournaments. Dabrowski also created history on Thursday as she became the

first Canadian to win a Grand Slam title. He qualified for the Grand Slam final of his career in 2010 when he and Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi entered the title clash of the US open. The Indo-Pakistan combination had registered several superb performances in that tournament, including a straight sets win over second seeds Daniel Nestor and Zimonjic in the third round. However, the 16th seeds ran into the legendary Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the final.

Bopanna and Qureshi put up a fight before going down 6-7, 6-7 to the top seeded Bryan brothers who were also World No.1 at that time. “We didn’t start off a great today, but we kept pushing and working hard together, and we finally got through. “We relaxed a little more in the second set, and we started playing our game. We were trying to do too much as a team. Because it was a final, we were trying to go for too much maybe on the returns or even on the serve,” Bopanna was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

SUNNI TERROR HITS IRAN

17 killed as Islamic State targets Iran Parliament, Khomeini mausoleum IANS, TEHRAN

A

t least 17 people were killed in the first terror attack claimed by the Islamic State in Iran, with two bands of killers targeting the Parliament House and Ayatollah Khomeini’s mausoleum in the heart of Tehran this week. The Islamic State, a Sunni jihadist group, claimed responsibility for both the attacks in the Shia majority nation, media reports said. The IS posted a video showing what it claimed was footage from inside the high-rise Parliament building. Iranian officials said they foiled a third attack. It was not clear whether the death toll of 17 included the attackers or whether the victims were killed in both incidents or only at the Parliament, BBC reported. At least 40 people were injured, according to Emergency Services chief Pir Hossein Kolivand. In the first incident, four gunmen armed with assault rifles forced their way into Parliament when it was in session and opened

fire at security guards and visitors. Some reports said the terrorists entered through a public entrance, apparently dressed as women.

Iranian media reported that all four attackers were killed by the security forces. But by then damage had been done.

Iranian authorities denied there had been a hostage situation inside Parliament even as hundreds of security personnel, some in civilian

clothes and armed with revolvers, ringed the building. Speaker Ali Larijani downplayed the events, describing them as a “minor issue”. But a lawmaker admitted that it was a major attack. Minutes after the Parliament attack began, terrorists opened fire at the mausoleum of Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic state. The Governor of Tehran said one attacker detonated a suicide vest and another had been killed by security forces, state broadcaster IRIB reported. Images from the scene showed grenades and magazines for automatic weapons, recovered from the body of an attacker. The suicide attacker was a woman. Several visitors at the mausoleum were injured. This was the most serious terrorist incident in Tehran since the early years of the Islamic revolution of 1979 led by Khomeini, the BBC reported. The Islamic State has no following in Iran but has stepped up its Farsi language propaganda in a bid to woo the country’s Sunni minority.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Mauritania and the Maldives have broken diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Trump to solve Qatar crisis now? WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has proposed to convene a summit to resolve the crisis caused by the decision of Saudi Arabia followed by several other countries to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar. Trump spoke by telephone with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and offered to host the meeting if it would help them resolve their differences, the White House said in a statement. “The President emphasized the importance of all countries in the region working together to prevent the financing of terrorist organizations and stop the promotion of extremist ideology in his call with the Qatari ruler,” the White House said. The White House did not specify if the meeting proposed by Trump

would include just the member nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council -- Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia -- or also other nations which have joined the diplomatic boycott of Qatar, Efe news reported. So far, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Mauritania and the Maldives have broken diplomatic ties with Qatar, while Jordan announced it will reduce its diplomatic representation in that country and Senegal has called its envoy to the emirate home for consultations. The rupture is based on the accusation that the Qatari government finances terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State, Al Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood.

K Prime Minister Theresa May’s ruling Conservative Party has failed to win an overall majority in parliament, and the country is now set for a hung parliament, media reports said on June 9. With 629 results in out of the total 650, the latest party figures are: Conservatives: 42 per cent (up 5); Labour Party 40 per cent (up 10); Liberal Democrats 7 per cent (down 1); Scottish National Party (SNP) 3 per cent (down 2); UK Independent Party 2 per cent (down 11); and Greens Party 2 per cent (down 2), reports the Guardian. The Conservatives are projected to get 316 seats, Labour 265, the SNP 34 and the Liberal Democrats 13. According to the BBC, the hung parliament would be a humiliation for Prime Minister May, who chose to call snap general election to try to strengthen her hand in talks with the European Union over Britain’s exit from the 27-nation bloc. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged May to resign soon after exit polls on Thursday night indicated a gain for the opposition party, but she said her party would “ensure” stability in the UK. “At this time more than anything else, this country needs a

Get NOC from Sonia, Manmohan: Nihalani CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani is happy that Anupam Kher is stepping into the shoes of Manmohan Singh for a film SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

entral Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani is happy that Anupam Kher is stepping into the shoes of Manmohan Singh for a film, but says the movie’s makers will need to obtain no-objection certificates (NOC) from the former Prime Minister himself as well as Congress President Sonia Gandhi for film certification. Nihalani has warned that the film’s makers would have to abide by the guideline regarding all films based on real-life characters. “The makers of ‘The Accidental

This rule applies without fail. There are no exceptions,” Nihalani said. “And although my current tenure as the CBFC chairperson ends in January 2018 and this film will come up for censorship after that, I am sure the guidelines regarding biopics would remain unchanged.” He hopes the film’s team is aware of this. “Anupam Kher was himself the CBFC chairperson not too long so. Ashoke Pandit who considers him-

And Hansal Mehta who is writing the film, claims to be a victim of the censorship guidelines every time his film is on release. I can’t imagine how these people cannot be aware of the NOC required for censor clearance of films based on real-life figures,” Nihalani added. When IANS contacted producer Sunil Bohra, he said he was travelling. Nevertheless, Nihalani is confident Anupam Kher will give the role his best shot. “He’s such a versatile actor. ‘Dangal’ a film to be proud of: China A IANS, BEIJING

NEW DELHI: Bank Chor has passed the censor test with a U/A certificate, with minor audio dubs and without any visual cuts. With actors Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Anand Oberoi in lead roles, it is the story of three men who choose the worst day possible to rob a bank. The three ‘chors’ — Champak, Genda and Gulab — are simpletons and their banter has no adult humor, read a statement from Y-Films. The team wanted the film to appeal to family audiences. “Throughout the making of the film, we kept family audiences in mind and we are so glad that the film has got a rating that will attract all kinds of people to the theatres on June 16,” said Riteish. Vivek said: “Even though my character plays a badass cop in the film, we refrained from showing him smoking or using any cuss words as we didn’t want to alienate younger audiences and families from the film. So Bank Chor now earns the accolade of being one of the cleanest comic thrillers ever.” The film is directed by Bumpy and produced by Ashish Patil.

In a meeting with a group of editors and journalists for the BRICS Media Forum, Liu Yunshan, a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee, said Dangal was one of the most “successful and influential” films shown in China in recent years. “India and its media should be proud of what the film has achieved... Dangal, which released here as Let’s Wrestle, Dad, is about a determined father in a patriarchal society, training his daughters to become

world class wrestlers. Aamir is one of the most popular Indian actors in China and the media here has been writing about the phenomenal success of the movie as it has struck a chord with the Chinese, also a male-dominated society. The movie has grossed more than 1.2 billion RMB, said Liu, who met select BRICS Media Forum delegates at the Great Hall of the People. That puts Dangal — released on May 5 across around 7,000 screens in China — among the top foreign film grossers. The Mermaid is the highest-grossing movie (over 3 million RMB) in China, followed by likes of Monster Hunt, The Fate of the Furious and Furious 7.

ased on a short story which was inspired by true events written by Mukul Sharma, the film sounds more autobiographical than fiction. Set in the late 1970s, in the small hilly town of McCluskieganj in the erstwhile state of Bihar, as the title suggests, is about a death that occurs at this place. The narrative begins with a corpse being transported from the hospital and it keeps you glued to the screen till the very end as to who is dead? Apart from the homecoming, it is the reunion of friends that the tale focusses on. The bulk of the

narrative, however, is about the mundane life of each character described in microscopic detail during the fun-filled holiday activities, which include indulging in

While all the actors are ace performers and they shine in their roles, your heart bleeds for actor Vikrant Massey who plays the lonely and depressed Shutu who is taken for granted by the motley group, because he is 23 years old, the youngest of the adults and malleable. He is charming and sincere. How he bonds with little Tanya portrayed by Arya Sharma or gets hurt when accused by all, are some of the heart-rending moments. Ranvir Shorey as the recently wedded Vikram Choudhary is the big bully who at his age “still behaves like he is a 23-year-old”, is aggressive and a chauvinist.

Stardom! What is this, asks Salman

S

uperstar Salman Khan says he does not take his celebrity status seriously. Asked what he wants to achieve in life, Salman told the media: “I live my life moment to moment. If I can make this moment the best one, I know I will get something out of it... “As an actor I’m doing my job. The persona you are seeing on screen is a contribution of more than 100 people from the different departments like camera, make-up and lights. How can I take that madness that you guys (media and common people) call stardom so seriously? I don’t.”

‘Would love to do dance-based film’

B

ollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput said he would love to do a film like Black Swan that has dance as the central theme. “If a dance-based film like Black Swan comes my way, I would readily say yes to it. I really do not pick my films thinking that I would be able to dance in it but if I get a film that has dance as the central theme, I would jump into it,” Sushant said. Stating that dance has been a major communicating medium in his life, the actor said even while doing the films he thinks from the perspective of a dancer. “Before joining theatre, I used to be a background dancer. So I have learnt to communicate through rhythm. Even on the sets, I keep thinking like a dancer. I keep thinking about the rhythm of the scene and the character,” Sushant added.

Hasya Kavi Sammelan an astounding success BY A STAFF WRITER T L A N TA , G A – T h e Atlanta Hindi Association, in collaboration with International Hindi Association, once again brought people together to appreciate poetry that cuts across all borders of age, class and nationality. The number of people who thronged Berkmar High School on April 29 evening proved that the Hasya Kavi Sammelan was an eponymous success. The legendary names of Padmashri Dr. Sunil Jogi, Gajendra Solanki and Sudeep Bhola in contemporary Hindi realms served as beacons to attract Atlanta literati to come and enjoy the laughter riot. Over 500 people enjoyed the show this year. The insane, infectious laugh-A -Thon began with 6-plus-feet tall Sudeep Bhola. He explained how professional habits die hard and how he stayed faithful to being a poet even during his wedding ceremony in a sing-song, tell-tale fashion. Funny parodies on socio- political issues in his overly soulful voice kept the audience enthralled with continuous kicks of laughter. Gajendra Solanki, had a different brand of humor and floored the listeners as he recited his poetry with a punch of everyday humor.

charmed men and women alike. The Hasya Kavi Sammelan this year was a well-organized event with great attention to detail. The event was supported by Shiv Mandir Of Atlanta, BAJA Atlanta, Agarwal

Samaj of Georgia, Dr Deepak Das and Shilpi Das, Dr. Shalini Pandey, BM Yadav, Kaushal Tripathi, Dhananjay Gupta, Indian Bazaar and Shivam Grocery. The memorable event culminated with Raffle drawing and prize distribution.

Too much texting may be ‘uncool’ IANS, NEW YORK

P

eople who spend too much time texting may be at increased risk of having “smartphone thumb”, a painful condition caused by repetitive movements of typing that may lead to arthritis in the thumb, doctors have warned. Formally known as tendinitis, the condition was earlier only seen in factory workers. It causes the tendon that bends and flexes the thumb to become inflamed. But with increased use of smart-

phone for our daily activities, this type of pain has become more common over the years in the US, according to a CBSNews.com report. “One of the hypotheses is that, you know, the joints get loose and lax, and because of that the bones kind of move differently

than they would in a normal situation,” Kristin Zhao, a biomedical engineer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester was quoted as saying by CBS Minnesota. The movements we require our thumbs to make as we hold our phones are awkward, Zhao said. “It’s also a movement that requires some force through the thumbs. It’s not just free movement in space,” she explained. “Our hypothesis is that abnormal motion of bones in the thumb could be causing pain onset and eventual osteoarthritis,” Zhao said.

Malaria infection may also cause bone loss Sustained long-term accumulation of parasite by-products leaves the bone in a state of chronic inflammation IANS, TOKYO

M

alaria infection may result in bone loss as a result of chronic inflammation induced by accumulated by-products in the bone marrow left by the parasite that causes the disease, say researchers. Malaria caused by Plasmodium parasites is a life-threatening infectious disease that kills at least half a million people annually while causing over 200 million new infections. New gene therapy can ‘turn off’ asthma IANS, SYDNEY

R NEW YORK: Older adults with persistent pain show quicker memory decline as they age and are more likely to have dementia years later, an indication that chronic pain could be related to changes in the brain, researchers have found. The study, led by researchers from the University of California San Francisco, showed people suffering from chronic pain tend to have less attention capacity and impaired memory.

esearchers have developed a new gene therapy that may help to ‘turn-off ’ the immune response which causes allergic reaction such as asthma, or potentially lethal food allergies. “When someone has an allergy or asthma flare-up, the symptoms they experience results from immune cells reacting to protein in the allergen,” said Ray Steptoe, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. The findings showed that the single treatment may give life-long protection from asthma as well as those who have severe allergies to peanuts, bee venom, shell fish and

Experimental ovarian cancer treatment ‘promising’: Study LONDON: An experimental new treatment for ovarian cancer led to a dramatic shrinking of tumors in a small, early-phase study, the media reported this week. Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London were testing a drug, known as ONX0801, for safety, but found that tumors in half of the 15 women studied shrank during the trial, a response they called, “highly unusual” and “very promising”, reports The Guardian. Researchers believe the drug could hold promise for women whose ovarian cancer has stopped responding to traditional treatment. Besides, as the drug specifically tar-

other substances by de-sensitizing the immune system to tolerate the protein. “The challenge in asthma and allergies is that these immune

cells, known as T-cells, develop a form of immune ‘memory’ and become very resistant to treatments,” Steptoe said.

“We have now been able ‘wipe’ the memory of these T-cells in animals with gene therapy, de-sensitizing the immune system so that it tolerates the protein,” he added. For the study, detailed in the journal JCI Insight, the team took blood stem cells, and inserted a gene which regulated the allergen protein and put that into the recipients. “Those engineered cells produced new blood cells that express the protein and target specific immune cells, ‘turning off ’ the allergic response,” Steptoe noted. The eventual goal would be a single injected gene therapy, that is simpler and safer which could be used across a wide cross-section of affected individuals, he said.

Breastfeeding reduces C-section pain IANS, LONDON

M

others who breastfed their babies for more than two months after delivery via Caesarean section were three times less likely to experience persistent pain, researchers found. Chronic pain after C-section delivery, lasting for more than three months, affects around one in five mothers. Though it is widely accepted that breast milk is the most important and appropriate nutrition in early life, little was known about the effect of breastfeeding on a mother’s chronic pain after C-section. The findings showed that around one in four (23 per cent) of the mothers who breastfed for two months or less still experienced

chronic pain in the surgical site four months post their operation compared to just eight per cent of those who breastfed for two or months. “The preliminary results suggest breastfeeding for over two months

protects against chronic post-caesarean pain, with a three-fold increase in the risk of chronic pain ,” said Carmen Alicia Vargas Berenjeno from the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de Valme in Spain.
