If you have lived in San Diego County for some time, are new to the area or are visiting from out of town, you will enjoy this publication. It is organized by neighborhoods in North County, San Diego Central, East County and South Bay. Check page 5 to find all the communities included, then flip to each section to discover fun things to do there. The county map on page 4 may be helpful.

Every year we research the best family activities, updating and adding new locations, so the information is as updated as possible at the time of publication. It’s a great idea to call each location for hours and cost (if any) before you leave home.

If Italian fare is more your family’s style, head to Little Italy to discover a new favorite ristorante. Dine al fresco at Allegro or enjoy Northern Italian street food at Monello, where pizza and pasta are plentiful. Or, grab a bite at Burger Lounge where kids eat free every Tuesday. Enjoy breathtaking views from La Jolla’s secret swing. Locate the small wooden bridge in the back of Birch Aquarium’s parking lot to find the short trail. Sometimes the swing disappears, making it even more mysterious.

Dave’s Rock Garden is a treasured spot for families, artists and passersby. Take a stroll through the garden and enjoy a delightfully landscaped oasis with hundreds of hand-painted rocks placed by locals and visitors. Located at 200-298 B St., Encinitas.

Stop by Harper’s Topiary Garden to admire and snap a photo of 50 life-size topiaries sculpted into playful creatures. 3549 Union St., Mission Hills.

During low tide, you might catch a glimpse of the SS Monte Carlo, which crashed ashore on New Year’s Eve 1936. The ship’s remains can sometimes be seen in front of the Coronado Shores Condos.

Snap a unique photo of your family in front of police lineup wall at The Headquarters at Seaport downtown (the former site of San Diego’s Police headquarters). Find old jail cells, historic photos and police memorabilia, all free to explore. www.theheadquarters.com/history

Sunset Park is a gem in North County. Kids can enjoy one of two playgrounds at opposite ends of the park. One has a splash pad adjacent to it that adds fun on a warm day. Park features include a disc golf course, dog park, basketball half-court, and plenty of walking paths around the park. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy with friends and family.
