CELEBRITY FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN AT CELEBRITY RANCH
O
n the fringes of the Temecula Valley, a world away from traffic congestion, noise, peer pressure, gangs, violence and drugs, there is an oasis for underprivileged kids who could use a bright spot in their lives. Celebrity Foundation for Children, a registered charitable organization, operates on over 80 acres in the Temecula Valley. This non-profit organization invites kids from neighborhoods where a camping experience isn’t likely to happen. The Ranch provides them with an opportunity at no cost, to enjoy special memories that will last a lifetime. Most of the 5,000 children that visit The Ranch each year are from foster care, boys and girls clubs, scout troops and children of military families. While here, they get to enjoy a weekend away sleeping in a wooden bunkhouse with a group of their peers. They are able to explore and experience a unique place full of adventure. Opportunities to hike, play games, have a picnic, treasure hunt, rock climb and relax around a campfire. Remember when the ghost stories told around the fire ring seemed real enough to envision a visit from the past such as “White Face”, the Great Indian War Chief? Or searching in the dark of night for the Big Dipper? We all should have those special memories. Our campers are able to come up close to exotic animals such as buffalo, llama, camel, goats, sheep, horses, a zebra and even an ostrich! They play baseball, soccer and shoot at the archery range. A favorite spot is always the adventurous fort above the outdoor dining and amphitheater setting. Throughout the weekend, there are classes on a variety of subjects such as positive ways to prepare themselves for the future. Exercising compassion, responsibility and learning the art of self-sufficiency are popular topics. There is time for an old-fashioned hayride and some special moments where they make new friends. They are welcome to attend a service on Sunday morning in a non-denominational church recently built and located on the grounds.

W
hile somewhat unknown, the City of San Diego has a long-held tradition of polo; one that dates back to the start of the 20th century. San Diego was the home of the first significant polo match in California, and its organizer, John D. Spreckels, is often referred to as the grandfather of the sport. Spreckels was an entrepreneur from San Francisco and during a business trip to

San Diego, he was captivated by Coronado. Spreckels immediately began investing in the area, most notably in the emerging Hotel Del Coronado, and eventually he became the owner. Hoping to entice well-to-do visitors to the hotel, he built the Coronado Country Club on the property. It featured an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, an arena for national horse show competitions and, most importantly, three polo fields.
1906 POLO FOUNDED IN SAN DIEGO
In 1906, Spreckels sponsored the first major polo tournament in Coronado. He imported a team of English Lords to play against the American team, which was comprised mostly of Naval officers. This match garnered significant attention, and Coronado quickly became known for the quality of its fields, the perfect climate and, most importantly, for the skilled players and horses it was attracting. Over the years, many prestigious polo tourna-
ments were held on Coronado Island and the best players and teams would travel from around the world to compete alongside millionaires and movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin. The grandstand often held the nobility and aristocracy of Europe as well as Americans of great wealth and distinction.
THE NAMES OF OUR CURRENT CHAMPIONS ARE ENGRAVED ALONGSIDE THE POLO GREATS OF THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY The most notable of these matches was the Polo Challenge. In 1909, Spreckels commissioned a two-foot silver trophy to be presented to the winners of the Polo Challenge and the tournament then became known as the Spreckels Cup. Each year, the trophy was engraved with the names of the winning team members. The Spreckels Cup was played every year from 1909-1921 (with the exception of the World War I years), and the last team to capture the trophy was the famous Midwick Country Club team led by Carleton F. Burke. After he passed, his widow donated the Spreckels Cup to the Coronado Historical Society. Not fully understanding the trophy’s historic significance, it was stored away. Interest in polo began to decrease with the emergence of World War I and there was less European participation, most notably amongst the English teams. Professional teams had to be brought in to replace the English ones, but these costs significantly increased the club’s expenses. By the time the Second World War had come to an end, so had Coronado’s opulent polo era. Coronado Country Club was eventually sold to developers who quickly transformed the area into housing tracts and, overnight, polo in San Diego disappeared. While the sport continued to be played, it would take over 40 years before polo would find a permanent home in San Diego again.
There was a resurgence of polo in the 1970s and 1980s and a man named Willis Allen set out to establish a new club. He began searching for a location in Rancho Santa Fe with his son-in-law Harry Collins and his grandson Chris Collins. Allen had a deep connection to the sport. As a youth, he had played arena polo at the Coronado Country Club. After years of tireless work, the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club opened its gates, and in 1986, the first match was held on the same fields where we play today. Over the past 30 years, the club has welcomed countless players and fans from around the world.
the Spreckels Cup. It is one of the many tangible links that connects our current club to the Golden Age of polo. The names of our current champions are engraved alongside the polo greats of the early 20th century, and the tradition of polo in San Diego continues on.
In 1988, the glory of the Spreckels Cup found its way home as well. In the previous year, Julie Mulvihill-Mayer was able to locate the Spreckels Cup at the California Breeders Association. At that time, it was being used as a punch bowl. However, with the help of Jessops Jewelers, the trophy was restored to its previous splendor and every year since, it is filled to the brim with red roses and presented to the winning team of

POLO GLOSSARY CHUKKER: a period of play in which games are divided, similar to an inning in baseball. Each chukker is 7 1/2 minutes long and most games are made up of 4 chukkers. HANDICAP: Players are rated from -1 to 10 depending on their skill level. A -1 goal player would be a beginner and a 10-goal player would be among one of the very best players in the world. It is difficult to attain a 10-goal handicap and there are less than a dozen players worldwide with that ranking. A game or tournament is put together matching the overall handicap of all the players. TEAMS: There are four players on each team and no goalie. MALLET: Bamboo stick ranging in length and weight used to hit the plastic ball. GOALS: The direction of the game changes after every goal. LINE OF THE BALL: This is the “right of way” in polo, created to avoid dangerous situations. It works like a two-way highway and changes everytime the ball is hit. The line may never be crossed by other players. If it is, the result is a penalty. RIDE-OFF: One of the most common defensive moves, a ride-off is when another player pushes another player off the line of the ball to gain possession. A player may only bump their opponent if they are traveling in the same direction and at the same speed as their opponent. HOOK: When a ride-off is unsafe, a player may reach his mallet to hook the other player’s mallet in order to prevent him from hitting the ball. UMPIRES: There are two officials on horseback on the field to ensure the safety of the players and enforce the rules. The “third man” is another official on the sidelines who keeps score and will settle a dispute among the mounted officials.

rom champion-level players to devoted amateurs, the marriage of a rider and his horse in polo is a bond unrivaled in sports. Memo Gracida, perhaps the best polo player in the world, checks on them before he sleeps. Pablo Llorente, president of the Argentina Polo Players Association and a top breeder, says that a good pony makes all the difference in competition. Elite players are so attached to their best ponies—bred for speed, agility and demeanor—that today they’re willing to pay upwards of $100,000 to harness new technology and clone their most beloved horses. Spearheaded by the cloning of renowned Argentina player Adolfo Cambiaso’s star stallion Aiken Cura, the practice of creating replica ponies for play has been growing steadily over the last five years. Daniel Juarez, a head pro and former breeder based in West Linn, Ore., calls it “probably the most interesting and exciting thing” happening in the polo world. He pointed to the recent US Open in Florida, where Cambiaso played two clone horses. Llorente says that the best horse he’s ever seen play is Cambiaso’s mare Cuartetera. She’s been cloned as well, with her offspring playing in matches today.“It’s awesome to see four or five clones of one ‘crack’ playing together in a match,” Llorente says. The cloned horse, created from the cells of a top equestrian athlete, will resemble its predecessor right down to the markings—which may not be exact, but will certainly be in the same place. Players have found that despite being raised at a different time or in a different environment, these “children” of the original pony will have the same athletic ability, temperament and disposition. But the high cost of cloning means the majority of polo ponies are still being bred via embryos carried in a surrogate mare, as they have been for the last couple of decades, Juarez explains. That allows the top mare to continue playing in matches while the colt spends the four or five years it needs to be fully trained under the care of another mother.

And no matter how the pony is born, players—many of whom can own dozens of horses and play nine different ponies in a game—are looking for specific characteristics. Historically, polo horses were about 14 hands tall; today, they range in the 15 to 16 hand range. Juarez says his top mare, Dairy Queen, is just over 15 hands. “She’s the complete package,” he says. “She’s compact, powerfully built, she’s got speed, and she’s got the ability to change directions without even thinking about it. I don’t even have to think about what I do, I just do it.” Training, veterinary care and nutrition have all improved tremendously, players say. Former Governor of the USPA Pacific Coast Circuit, Glen Holden, says, “The biggest change in polo in the last ten years has been the quality of the horses. In the early days of American polo, many of the ponies resulted from the breeding of ranch mares to Thoroughbred stallions. In contrast, many of the polo ponies today are Thoroughbreds from the racetrack. A well-built horse of a player’s dreams includes physical characteristics—known as a pony’s conformation—including large muscling in the hindquarters, strong, clean legs and a supple neck. A good feature is a close-coupled back, which allows for those critical tight turns during play. Training is also key. Experienced breeders know that even if the pony has the best athletic ability, it still has to have its skills harnessed and broken to the demands of polo play. Those early years are spent training and conditioning a horse to “accelerate to full speed, change direction or slow down to zero in the shortest distance,” Gracida has said. The horse must also be able to act as one with its rider, and must be conditioned to “have patience and perseverance and to play and play and play,” Llorente says. Horses are brought on slowly: players will put four-year-olds into club chukker matches and really immerse them in tournament play at six. A pony isn’t considered “made,” or completely trained, until it has has two full seasons of polo. The time and effort of training and care mean starting with a well-bred pony that has success in its very genes is of utmost importance. “The horses are paramount,” Juarez says. “They’re the most important thing. You can overcome a lot of deficiencies in other parts of your game if you’ve got top horses.”

I started playing polo because I love horses and I wanted to impress my daughter who is active in Pony Club. I participated in an introductory lesson through the Polo Training Foundation in 2013 as a clinic to our South OC Pony Club. A few years ago, I enjoyed a summer of lessons at the Temecula Valley Polo Club, where I met my Pro Alvaro Tadeo. I kept showing up to play practice chukkers and learn more about the sport, and now I have horses, equipment, tack... I love it. Polo is a sport that requires complete focus, otherwise you pay the consequences. Coming off the horse is no fun and it has cost me quite of few cases of beer at the Crash & Burn Party at the end of the year.
ALVARO TADEO Like many young kids, I grew up playing soccer on fields in Morelos, Mexico, while my father tended polo fields in Southern California. I always dreamed about playing polo as a career, and after years of hard work and practice, I feel truly blessed.

ELLEN GREENHILL Ellen continues to surprise and delight herself throughout her many travels. Last spring at the Necker Island compound of Sir Richard Branson, Ellen was conversing with David Geffen about her famed talks at the 2013 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Intrigued to learn more, Mr. Geffen extended an invitation for Ellen to join his family onboard the magnificent 337-foot megayacht, “Pelorus.” Cruising through the Western ports of the Mediterranean, down through the Suez Canal to Tanzania, “Pelorus” makes her last port in Dubai. Ellen disembarked to attend a multitude of prestigious events with her dear friend, Sheik Mohammed bin Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of UAE. Starting with the Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge at Ali Albwardy Desert Palm, followed by the New Year’s gala celebration at the Burj Al Arab, and finally on to the camel races at Al Marmoum. Ellen and Sir Richard Branson rendezvous to pursue their next adventure; a skydiving expedition over the Sudan and Sahara. The two board a Virgin private jet bound for St. Moritz, Switzerland, scheduled to attend the Cartier Snow Polo World Cup; the only “high-goal” polo tournament played on snow. At the opening gala evening, Sir Richard
elaborates on a previous conversation with Ellen about accompanying the first Virgin Galactic space flight as an honorary Captain onboard the VSS “Unity.” Ellen is an enigma; her reputation preceding her, the way lightning precedes thunder. She is currently at Spaceport America immersed in spaceflight and aerospace instruction for her junior space voyage with the Virgin Galactic fleet. The beginning of the San Diego Polo season is a welcomed break from her jet-setting lifestyle. Her passion has always been polo; the people, the players, the game, she will continue to play until her health or cash runs out, whichever comes first.

NOUR-DEAN ANAKAR NICOLE DEBERG There is one thing that this year’s charity sponsor for Opening Day of Polo, the San Diego Film Festival, and polo here in San Diego have in common; they are both stacked with interesting casts of characters that make the main feature match a very entertaining game to watch. Polo Team BMW, captained by Nour-Dean Anakar, who is also the President of the San Diego Polo Club, will be matched against the J. Craig Venter Polo Team, led by the COO of the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla, Nicole DeBerg. As everyone at the San Diego Polo Club knows, as much as these polo players may like each other off the field, when on their horses playing against one another, they are sure to take no prisoners and it is going to be an action driven match. Moroccan raised Anakar is a polo veteran who has been playing internationally for the past 25 years in prestigious high goal tournaments with various polo icons such as Gonzalo and Alphonso Pieres and Lucas Criado. Anakar, wearing a vest from his hometown in Tangier in Morocco, also captains the Moroccan Polo Team. German born and raised DeBerg, is described by her friends as the Lara Croft (“Ball Raider”) of the polo field, is wearing a “tough girl” American designer version of her hometown’s German dirndl. While DeBerg is known as an energetic, fearless and fun competitor who will do anything to bend the rules and who would rather die than give up on any ball, Anakar plays a strategic, deliberate and controlled game and knows every move that will happen on the field before it happens. Under his leadership, the BMW team will be giving the Venter team a run for their money. DeBerg laughs, “I adore Nour-Dean and he has taught me a lot, but it’s like Hunger Games, only one of us can come out the winner.” Anakar says, “she is going to do anything to win and if she does, I will actually be really proud of her. I hope I have mentored the renegade out of her enough to see her play a great polo game this season without too many fouls! ” Game on!

Nowadays, the sight of a woman charging down a polo pitch at breakneck speed, her legs thrown on each side of her pony as she flies after the ball is a gloriously common one—especially as female riders make up the fastest-growing segment in US Polo today.
In 1908? Not so much. That didn’t stop Eleonora Randolph Sears of Boston. As sugar magnate John D. Spreckels built up the storied polo fields and stables on Coronado Island in the early 1900s, players from all over the United States and the world were drawn to the top notch play—including Miss Sears. The renowned athlete was among the glitterati who spent warm winters taking in tournaments near the Hotel del Coronado, according to research by the Coronado Historical Society. Sears, a national tennis champion and early advocate for women in sports, visited Coronado annually from 1908 to 1917, and spent each trip advocating for women’s tournaments—an effect that is felt by the ever-growing ranks of female polo players more than 100 years later.

“Miss Sears, who has attracted considerable attention at the Hotel del Coronado during the recent tournament by her mannish riding costume and fearless riding is enthusiastic over the proposition” of women’s polo teams, the Union wrote in April 1909. And while she was never successful in organizing an all-women’s event in Southern California, she did blaze trails by playing in a coed match in Coronado in March 1915, playing with two women on each side with a man deployed as defensive back. It marked her the first woman to play polo on a men’s team. Her brash flaunting of gender norms guaranteed her enraptured newspaper coverage: Such as the fact Miss Sears rode astride instead of side saddle—and she did it wearing pants. “Mounted in costume Miss Eleonora Sears appeared on the polo fields of the Coronado Country Club yesterday afternoon and promptly became the center of interest,” the Tribune reported on February 19, 1915. “Dressed in polo boots and breeches, a great polo coat reaching to her boot tops and a large black slouch covering her hair, Miss Sears is with difficulty distinguished from the men polo players.” And perhaps that was Miss Sears’ point all along, say the ladies who play the sport of kings today. “Once you step in the arena, we become equal and only your merit and ability matters,” says Julie Empey, an arena player with a rating of one. “There is something beautiful about standing around a group of men that may normally intimidate me hearing them say that they are scared of me in the arena!”

Nicole DeBerg, a San Diego player, says the face of polo in America is changing. “Just like enrollment of women in colleges, the number of women playing polo is steadily increasing,” DeBerg says. “At the San Diego Polo Club for example, membership of women last year exceeded 40 percent.”
ANY WOMAN COMPETING OUT THERE IN A SPORT AS TOUGH AND DANGEROUS AS POLO, ROYALTY OR NOT, DESERVES THE TITLE. Along with the competition and constant challenge of growing as a player, Sue Landis says that she also has relished the opportunity to build vast networks across the globe through polo. Landis, a United Kingdom Women’s Open Polo and the Women’s World Polo Championship winner says that lifestyle element along with the sport is what keeps her coming back.

“As a woman, I love the family focus in polo – it’s great when my daughter can join me at a game, either behind the scenes, or at the après polo celebrations,” says Landis, who lives in San Diego and will play with the Hollywood Girls Polo Team this year. Empey says the most intense games she has ever played were women’s tournaments. “I think when women go out and play, they are so used to giving it all—just trying to make it in a man’s world,” Empey says. “We are serious and we want to be taken seriously. We know if we work hard, we can be respected as an athlete.” It’s a future that Miss Sears, who died in 1968 at age 86, would have been delighted to see. “What the suffrage leaders did for the political status of women, the Boston maid has done for women in the realm of sports, rescuing them from stupid age-old fetters of tradition,” a publication noted. And despite the long way women polo players have come since the days Miss Sears played, current riders say they can’t wait to see what the coming decades hold. “If the current trend continues, maybe someday the sport of the kings will also be referred to as the sport of the kings and queens,” says DeBerg, “As in my mind, any woman competing out there in a sport as tough and dangerous as polo, royalty or not, deserves the title.”
