DEAR SYMPHONY FAMILY As I look back on my first year as Music Director, I am so proud of the music the musicians of the San Diego Symphony and I created and shared with you. Although some 2019-2020 season programs sadly needed to be postponed for health and safety reasons, the memory of the performances of last season – particularly those featuring Mahler, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and of course, Beethoven – have lifted my spirits at a time when my passion, and that of all the symphony’s musicians, to make music for a live audience has had to suddenly pause. As we very well know, music has the outstanding power to heal the soul. There are no boundaries of language or limits of understanding. The only thing you have to do is to listen and let it do its work. That is why the San Diego Symphony musicians and I are so excited to welcome you back for our 2020-2021 season when you – our audience – will once again fill the hall and we will make music for you. In my second year as Music Director, I look forward to building on the momentum of what we created together last year, inspired by the energy of our audiences, and tapping into the deep talent of our fantastic symphony’s musicians. One of the things I am very excited about is being able to keep bringing some of the most talented soloists in the world today to our San Diego audience. Pianists Inon Barnatan, Jonathan Biss, and Marc-André Hamelin, violinists Veronika Eberle and Guy Braunstein, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and singers Michelle DeYoung, Stefan Vinke, and Dorothea Röschmann will all join us this season along with many more. We’ll continue the exploration of the works of composers close to my heart – Mahler, Strauss, and Shostakovich – and finish our celebration of Beethoven at 250. We will also celebrate Immigrant Composers and their rich musical contributions to the musical life of the United States. I’m particularly excited about the music of Venezuelan composer Reinaldo Moya and conducting Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of my favorite pieces. But most of all, I am looking forward to being out in our community and on stage in front of you with our orchestra again, continuing to change lives through music.

PAYARE, BEETHOVEN, SHOSTAKOVICH Rafael Payare, conductor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 1 SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 8 Music Director Rafael Payare leads the San Diego Symphony in masterpieces by two of history’s greatest symphonic composers. Payare continues his exploration of the symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich with his Symphony No. 8. Composed while Russia was under invasion during World War II and banned for many years by the Soviet Union, it is known as one of Shostakovich’s most powerful and affecting works.

HUMANS & NATURE: MAHLER'S SONG OF THE EARTH

Steven Schick, conductor San Diego Master Chorale ANNA THORVALDSDOTTIR: Metacosmos STRAVINSKY: Suite from The Firebird JOHN LUTHER ADAMS: Become Desert (SDSO co-commission & premiere) Explore the austere mystery of the desert as we begin our annual January festival, "In the Name of the Earth." Based on a Russian fairy tale, The Firebird is a dramatic story of courage and redemption. Stravinsky’s brilliant and colorful fairy tale ballet is bookended by tone poems depicting the vast and beautiful solitude of landscapes: Icelandic composer and UC San Diego alumna Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Metacosmos and John Luther Adams’ Become Desert— the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer's new work where the orchestra surrounds the audience in an unforgettable experience.  Part of "In the Name of the Earth" festival.

Gemma New, conductor Steven Schick, percussion BRITTEN: "Four Sea Interludes" from Peter Grimes TAN DUN: Water Concerto RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade "In the Name of the Earth" continues with meditations on the nature of water, our planet’s most precious resource. Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes depicts the many moods of Earth’s oceans, from peaceful moonlit waves to the menacing power of its storms. In Tan Dun’s Water Concerto, water literally takes center stage, as percussionist and festival curator Steven Schick performs on instruments filled with this life-giving substance. We conclude with Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical portrayal of the story of Sinbad the Sailor’s adventures.  Part of "In the Name of the Earth" festival.

Rafael Payare, conductor Michelle DeYoung, mezzo soprano Stefan Vinke, tenor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 6, Pastoral MAHLER: Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) "No one can love the country as much as I do. For surely woods, trees, and rocks produce the echo that man desires to hear," wrote Beethoven. His Pastoral Symphony captures the joy and awe we feel when encountering nature. Written a century later, Mahler’s The Song of the Earth is a reflective look at these majestic but fragile landscapes. This pivotal, grand orchestral composition features the added power of vocal expression as the mezzo soprano sings, “The dear earth everywhere blooms in spring and grows green once more! The horizon is lit everywhere and forever blue! Forever… Forever...”  Part of "In the Name of the Earth" festival.

GABRIELI: Selected Canzonas for Brass DVOŘÁK: Serenade for Strings MOZART: Serenade No. 10 for Winds, Gran Partita STRAVINSKY: Scherzo fantastique Each instrument group of the San Diego Symphony takes their turn at centerstage in the special program. Renowned British conductor and early music expert Trevor Pinnock opens with Baroque music for brass that once rang through St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. We then encounter Dvořák’s bucolic Serenade for Strings, and Mozart’s sublime Serenade for Winds. Stravinsky’s early Scherzo fantastique gathers the whole orchestra back together for a rousing finale.

Experience the full power of orchestral drama with three pieces that pushed the boundaries of music. The tragic yearning of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde includes some of the most passionate music ever written. Marc-André Hamelin brings his renowned virtuosity to the intricate melodic evolutions of Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto. And in Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra - originally commissioned for the Boston Symphony Orchestra - the virtuosity and artistry of our own San Diego Symphony’s musicians are on full display.

In vibrant bursts of sonic color, Images demonstrates why Debussy remains the unmatched master of atmospheric soundscapes. With sonorous harmonies and playful folk songs, the composer paints scenes from England, Spain, and his native French countryside. Soprano Dorothea Röschmann returns and joins the San Diego Symphony in performing Strauss’ sublime swansong Four Last Songs, that soars with lyricism. You’ll be enchanted by the expressive brilliance of these stunning works.

ANNA CLYNE: Abstractions SCHUMANN: Piano Concerto RACHMANINOFF: Symphonic Dances

HAYDN: Symphony No. 96, The Miracle BRAHMS: A German Requiem

In his only Piano Concerto, Schumann gave us an intimate portrait of the love he shared with his wife, Clara. Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter joins us as soloist in this iconic Romantic work. Then, experience a work praised by the Baltimore Sun for its “clarity and expressive nuance”. Anna Clyne’s atmospheric tone poem, Abstractions, paints musical portraits of five works of contemporary visual art. Rachmaninoff’s vibrant Symphonic Dances - the only piece he composed in America brings the concert to an energetic finale.

Music is at its most compelling when it brings us face to face with our own humanity. With A German Requiem, Brahms gave voice to the grief he felt upon the loss of his mother. Yet this work strives to do more than mourn the dead. With its powerful setting of biblical texts, Brahms’ masterpiece for voices and orchestra brings a poignant message of comfort and hope to the living.

This is our home. This is what connects us. Planet Earth is a miraculous place. And, San Diegans are especially blessed by the unique beauty of our region, where the ocean, desert and mountains meet, and where two countries share not just a border but also a delicate ecosystem. Our planet offers abundance and sustenance for all human life, but its fragile balance is increasingly threatened. Curated by Steven Schick, our January Festival “In the Name of the Earth” offers music that reflects nature’s power and majesty, and mirrors its turmoil. The San Diego Symphony, conducted by Schick, Gemma New, and music director Rafael Payare, performs works ranging from Beethoven and Mahler to contemporary masters like Tan Dun, Anna Thorvaldsdsottir, and John Luther Adams (whose Inuksuit was performed at the US-Mexico border in January 2018.) Additional performances by artists from various disciplines, and events featuring environmentalists and other partners will be announced at a later date. Join us in January for music inspired by our beautiful blue planet. And as we praise its bounty, let us also pledge to preserve it for future generations. Join us “In the Name of the Earth.”

For me, the earth itself is sacred John Luther Adams, composer

Be moved by MAHLER’s Song of the Earth. Find serenity in BRAHMS’ A German Requiem. Laugh at the antics of Till Eulenspiegel. You’ll enjoy the best of San Diego Symphony’s season with performances of BEETHOVEN, RACHMANINOFF, and more.

America has provided opportunities for immigrants. And immigrants have provided America with their unique gifts. Among these immigrants have been the performers and composers who have gifted our nation with its vibrant musical identity. America provided educational and growth opportunities for those like Anna Thorvaldsdottir, who completed her graduate studies at UC San Diego in 2011 and went on to win recognition from the likes of New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center. Anna Clyne and Chen Yi also came to America as students, and their music has now been embraced by orchestras across America and the world. Others created a life straddling two cultures. Reinaldo Moya’s Siempre lunes, siempre marzo may tell stories from his South American homeland, but it was composed in New York and premiered in New Jersey. Academy Award-winner for Best Original Music Score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tan Dun still draws much of his inspiration from his childhood in a small Chinese village. “I spend so much of my time to recompose this kind of memory,” he says. In the Water Concerto, “I transpose those memories...into my orchestrations.” But many others left their homes behind to seek refuge in a foreign land. Bartók fled Nazi Europe and found success in America late in his life when Boston Symphony Orchestra premiered his ever-popular Concerto for Orchestra. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances – the only piece he completed in his new home - includes the distinctively American and jazzy sound of the saxophone. Never monolithic and constantly evolving, our culture has always derived its richness from a constant influx of new people bringing new ideas which grow and blend to produce something new and uniquely American. This season, the San Diego Symphony highlights some of the voices that have blended together in the American chorus. They came from all corners of the globe, but each of them became, in their own way, an essential part of America. sandiegosymphony.org | (619) 235-0804

CELEBRATING IMMIGRANT COMPOSERS

Since its inception, America has been a land of new beginnings, new opportunities, and new ideas. As Finnish conductor-composer Esa-Pekka Salonen has said, moving to California made him realize that “for the first time in my life, free to do whatever [he] wanted in terms of [his] own work.”

MAHLER AND STRAUSS They knew one another for more than 20 years. They championed and conducted each other’s music.

sandiegosymphony.org | (619) 235-0804

17

Their careers—one in Austria, one in Germany—paralleled each other in many ways. Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss are, without doubt, the two giants of the early 20th-century Germanophone musical world. And yet, for all their similarities, they represent two very different approaches to music.

Strauss and I are like two miners,” quipped Mahler, “tunneling into the same mountain from opposite sides.” Their relationship could not be summarized more succinctly. Strauss embraced the tone poem— popularly thought of as his “film scores without a film”—infusing the genre with the strengths of symphonic form while expanding its narrative and dramatic potential, most famously in Don Juan, Don Quixote, and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. Mahler, meanwhile, devoted himself to the symphony, creating arguably the last great body of symphonic works. And yet, his symphonies were infused with the same programmatic elements as Strauss' tone poems. For Strauss, the stage became a second home. Many of his greatest artistic achievements were born on the operatic stage. Salome, Elektra, Rosenkavalier… A century later, these iconic works of music theater remain central to the repertoire. But even onstage, Strauss' symphonic sensibility remains clear. Salome is, after all, a single continuouslyunfolding act— essentially a sung and dramatized tone poem. Conversely, Strauss' love of operatic voices -- especially sopranos -extended into the concert hall, in

18

works such as the orchestral song cycle Four Last Songs. Curiously, Mahler never composed an opera—despite a lifetime spent leading the world’s greatest opera companies, including the Vienna Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. And yet, it’s impossible to miss the increasingly theatrical sensibility of Mahler’s symphonies. How can one experience The Song of the Earth without sensing the stealthy incursion of the operatic stage into the concert hall? The connection becomes even more explicit in his eighth symphony, with its operatic musical setting of the finale from Goethe’s Faust. It was, however, from their fundamentally opposed worldviews that most of their differences arose. Strauss engaged enthusiastically with contemporary culture, both aesthetically and topically. He experimented with innovations in form and adapted works by controversial authors like Oscar Wilde. His works are infused with the psychological and philosophical trends—Freud and Nietzche are ever-present—of the time. Mahler, on the other hand, was the last of the great Romantics, and his music displays a detachment from society and an embrace of the abstractly spiritual that betrays the nostalgia at his core. Despite a life lived in Vienna and New York, his work consistently draws on imagery of village life, with the Bohemian folk tunes, Austrian dances, and drinking songs of his childhood making frequent appearances. In The Song of the Earth, it's not hard to hear Mahler as a 20th century descendant of Beethoven and Schubert, his fellow Viennese.

These aesthetic and philosophical differences led to the key difference in their music. The Viennese scholar Hans Keller described it most clearly:

Strauss is all about blending. He takes different voices and weaves them together so they become a single tapestry of sound. Mahler, by contrast, is about separating the music out, so each voice takes on a life of its own.”

NOEL NOEL FAMILY The San Diego Symphony invites you to make Copley Symphony Hall your home for the holidays at our annual “Noel Noel” Family concert. Amp up your Christmas mood with a selection of favorite holiday classics. Sing your heart out with the symphony during the audience sing-along. The whole family will enjoy this festive afternoon concert!

Experience the orchestra as one magnificent musical ecosystem! Within an ecosystem, balance is key in maintaining harmonious interaction between organisms and their environment. Balance is also a vital component in music. A composer’s concern for balance can be heard in the orchestration of musical parts and manipulation of musical texture. Musical aspects of each ecosystem are performed by specific instruments, sections, and instrument families! We'll explore various ecosystems to understand the role of living organisms to sustain a balanced environment and hear how various sections of the orchestra create balance in a musical composition.

Expect this West Coast native to unveil the charms of cabaret chestnuts with sweetness, sincerity, and levity that have made her a beloved artist.

PATTI LUPONE DON’T MONKEY WITH BROADWAY*

Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra were two undisputed masters of “The Great American Songbook.” During their storied careers, they appeared together several times on television and on stage. Great fans of one another’s work, their mutual admiration transformed into pure magic when performing together. Sadly, they never realized a recording immortalizing their collaborative legacy. Join Capathia Jenkins and Tony DeSare as they recreate some of that magic live. Featured songs include: "This Could Be the Start of Something Big," "Come Fly With Me," "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "The Lady Is A Tramp," "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "New York, New York," and more.

In Don’t Monkey with Broadway, two-time Tony Award® winner Patti LuPone explores, through indelible interpretations of classic Broadway show tunes by the likes of Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin, how her life-long love affair with Broadway began and her concern for what the Great White Way has become today. *The San Diego Symphony does not perform on this program.

Fivetime Grammy® Award winner Dianne Reeves is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today — her arsenal of talents is richly on display in each and every song of her limitless repertoire. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the greatest musicians in jazz history,” Grammy® Award-winning saxophone titan Joe Lovano has distinguished himself as a visionary and pathfinding force in the arena of creative music.

THE JOEY ALEXANDER TRIO

DIZ N’ BIRD THE QUINTET: JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL

A funny thing happened to Joey Alexander over the past five years, a whirlwind period during which he became the most brilliantly precocious talent in jazz history—that is, a renowned festival and concert-hall headliner; the youngest musician ever nominated for a Grammy® Award in a jazz category; and a media favorite who’s earned a profile on "60 Minutes", a frontpage profile in The New York Times and other premier coverage.

Join Charles McPherson in an all-star quintet as they recreate Dizzy Gillespie’s and Charlie Parker’s historic 1953 performance of Jazz at Massey Hall. “Perdido,” “Salt Peanuts,” “A Night In Tunisia,” and “Hot House” are a few of the most influential and ever-so relevant selections of the jazz repertoire for musicians and listeners today. This amazing take on these compositions stands the test of time.

SUN NOV 22, 7:30PM

Steve Hackman, conductor Andrew Lipke, vocals Bill Prokopow, vocals Kéren Tayar, vocals Following on the huge success of Beethoven vs. Coldplay, Brahms v. Radiohead is conductor Steve Hackman’s epic symphonic synthesis of Radiohead’s album OK Computer and Brahms' first symphony, utilizing a full 70-piece orchestra and three pop vocalists. The piece stays in the romantic sound world of Brahms, using only the instruments he would have used to debut his Symphony, but woven in, superimposed, and inserted are the melodies and music of Radiohead. At times we hear the melodies and words of Radiohead suspended over Brahms’ original music; at times we hear the orchestra playing the music of Radiohead but with the dense Brahms counterpoint. Every combination is explored, and we constantly move from one to the other—but the piece is seamless and many times the audience is left wondering which is which, and how the combination was even possible.

Boys have been singing at the Viennese court since the 14th century. Today, the Vienna Boys Choir consists of 100 boys between the ages of ten and fourteen, from dozens of nations, divided into four touring groups. They visit virtually all European countries, and are frequent guests in Asia, Australia, and the Americas. The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music like waltzes and polkas by Lanner, Lehár, and Strauss.
