The program opens with American music—William Grant Still’s 1924 tone poem of grief, hope and prayer, intended, as the composer wrote, to be “representative of the American Negro and suggest the triumph of a people over their sorrows...” 4

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is adored for its extremely catchy tunes and for its vivid depiction of early eighteenthcentury Italian life through the year. Several hundred years later, the great Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla wrote his own version as an ode to Buenos Aires infused with melodic yearning and tango rhythms. Conductor Christopher Dragon leads the Orchestra and is joined by the young American violinist Elena Urioste for an evening of music in which different worlds reach out to one another.

In the first half, concertmaster Jeff Thayer joins Music Director Rafael Payare and the strings of the orchestra for a violin concerto by the Black French composer, the Chevalier de SaintGeorges (a contemporary of Mozart). In the second half, the wind instruments of the orchestra give us Mozart’s glorious Gran Partita. This was the music, in the film Amadeus, which made Salieri exclaim: “It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” 6

Written in 1945 at the end of World War II, this symphony was expected by the Soviet authorities to be a loud and noisy public celebration; when the composer created instead this lovely work of lightness, delicacy, charm and personal sorrow, he was roundly criticized. South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son, well known for her interpretations of Mozart, makes her San Diego debut with one of that master’s greatest concertos.

Rising-star violinist Aubree Oliverson plays Mendelssohn’s astonishing masterpiece, one of the best-loved violin concertos of all time, with its heart-tugging melodies and virtuoso fireworks. Edo de Waart leads the Orchestra in Mozart’s dark and dramatic “Prague” symphony, and the concert begins with Haydn’s Symphony No. 93, the first of the set of 12 that he created for London audiences at the end of his career.

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park™ The triumphant launch of the $85M Rady Shell at Jacobs Park™ in August of 2021 has signaled a new era for The San Diego Symphony and all of San Diego. This stunning new venue is the first permanent open-air performance space in the San Diego Symphony’s century-long history. This amazing bayside entertainment space and cultural destination attracts top musicians and artists from around the world and accommodates a wide range of audience sizes. Your support ensures that The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park will continue to provide San Diegans and visitors from around the world an extraordinary experience.

Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center One of the most beautiful and architecturally relevant theaters in San Diego, Copley Symphony Hall is home to the San Diego Symphony. It first opened in 1929 as The Fox Theatre and today it is one of the few remaining Fox Movie Theatres in the United States that still retains its original décor and design. We are excited that work has now begun on important infrastructure improvements to Jacobs Music Center. Your support ensures that Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center will continue to be the spectacular home of the San Diego Symphony, a home that deserves to match the brilliance of your orchestra.
