East Midlands Women’s Awards
2017
It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural East Midlands Women’s Award in this prestigious venue, The Falcon Hotel in Uppingham, Rutland. I am glad you have joined us to hear about and celebrate the achievements the women in this room. I wish to congratulate all our nominees. It is because of your contribution, your tenacity, hard work and persistence that we are all here and the East Midlands Women’s Awards proudly applaud your contribution across all of the sectors we represent. I am sometimes asked if we need Awards like this one. My reply is usually to ask this: ‘Why do we still have the issues of unequal pay where men and women undertake the same jobs? How can we change this? And how can we see that the work that women do is just a good, valuable and impactful across all sectors as that of our male counterparts.’ The East Midlands Women’s Awards aims rebalance some of these issues by bringing men and women together for the cause of profiling, recognising and celebrating the contribution women, the difference they have and are making and to encourage the support of leaders of both genders to recognise what we clearly see. Yes, this evening has been arranged to recognise and celebrate your achievement and we will certainly do that, but let’s not forget the opportunity for you to connect with the other amazing people in the room. There is nothing more powerful than engaging with like-minded people; people who are achievers, self-starters, highflyers, and passionate about making a positive impact on the world around them. So, do please ensure that you use the time to make connection and contacts. I would like to thank our sponsors and partners for their support with our work in bringing this awards event together. The Uppingham Business Forum, The Falcon Hotel, Uppingham First, DLUXE Magazine, Azore Boutique, Arbonne (Beverley Sankey), Inspiring You, Open Mind Coaching and Women In Management UK. I would also like to thank our judges Kevin Urquhart, Kate Green, Beverley Sankey, Rachel Hargraves, and Sonia Thompson. I am grateful for your support, time, energy and input in the judging process. The calibre of the nominations was quite high so the judging was not an easy. And finally, huge appreciate goes to Rupal Rajani and Maurice Flynn, whose skilled presenting has demonstrated humour, understanding and panache. Thank each one of you, those who have nominated someone and those nominated. Without you all playing your part, this would not be possible. We look forward to next year with pride.

2017
Friday 20 October 2017 at The Falcon Hotel, Uppingham The EMWA aims to highlight the contribution made by women from all sectors within the East Midlands counties. There are three main ideas behind the East Midlands Women’s Awards: To acknowledge the work carried out by an array of talented and successful women across the region who continue to make an outstanding contribution to the East Midlands in their chosen field, but, whatever the reason, fail to be recognised on a regional scale. To bring these outstanding women together to enable connection, introduce opportunities and allow the further development of ideas and potential synergies. To raise the profiles of the individuals and their organisations (from a wider business, community and economic stand point) to promote to audiences further afield exactly who and what we have here in the East Midlands that is delivered, envisioned and created by women.

1. Uppingham in Rutland – A brief history
The 6th century Anglo - Saxon farmstead that came to be known as the settlement of the people on the hill, otherwise Uppingas, developed where the ancient track from Oakham to Rockingham crossed the ridge. In Saxon and Norman times Uppingham was one of the seven small hamlets included in the King’s Manor of Ridlington. The town gained its Market Charter in 1281, although a market had existed long before this date. The Market Place is the focus of the town and reflects a long history of a place Women’s to trade as well as EastasMidlands Awards 66Uppingham
a place to reside. This partnership between business and the residents is still a key feature of the town today. Opening from the Market Place, St Peters & St Pauls church forms an integral part of the town. In Anglo - Saxon times it was one of the three attached to the Royal Manor of Ridlington. The church was rebuilt and enlarged early in the 14th century and its tower built several decades later. The early 1300s were prosperous times for Uppingham until the Black Death ravaged the town in 1348-9 AD. In 1584 Robert Johnson, Rector of North Luffenham, founded two grammar schools, one each at Oakham and Uppingham, to provide free education for the sons of local people. They are both now co educational and fee paying. The Elizabethan Schoolroom, built in 1584, is one of the three oldest buildings in Uppingham. It is listed as a Grade I building of architectural and historic interest deserving of protection and preservation. During the 17th Century, Uppingham was an important stop for coaches on the route between Stamford and Leicester. When the North/South route was opened in 1754-55 the London Mail coaches would stop at Uppingham and it was during this period that some fine coaching inns were built in the town. Two of them, the recently renovated Falcon Hotel and the Crown, are still in existence to this day and feature in the town’s Heritage Trail, acting as vibrant destinations for visitors and locals alike. Uppingham experienced a period of major expansion during the 19th Century. Firstly Uppingham School attracted a very influential Headmaster, Edward Thring, who oversaw a significant expansion of the school, both in terms of pupil numbers and buildings. Secondly, the people of Uppingham wanted to embrace the new technologies available to them at the time and, in 1894, after a lot of pressure and subsidy by the townsfolk, a railway station was built. This serviced a branch line
between Seaton and Uppingham for both goods and passenger traffic. For many years the line was an essential element in the social and economic framework of the town but the increasing popularity of the motor car and the decline in freight traffic meant that closure in 1964 under the Beeching axe was inevitable. The station buildings were demolished and the area is now the town’s Station Road Industrial Estate. The motor car is still a vital part of daily life in Uppingham and key to its social and economic development. Yet every November it gives up its market place parking to host a Fatstock Show, the only one of its kind in the UK. Uppingham has many residents who live in the town centre, the central part of which is a conservation area. Community and business services provided in the town support the many villages in its hinterland with elderly residents tending to relocate to the town once they are unable, for reasons of age or health, to drive. In the 1980s the A47 bypass was built and over the last 30 years the town has expanded its housing stock to reach a total of around 1900 properties occupied by a population of approximately 4700. In 2009 Uppingham formed its first economic development partnership, Uppingham First, a company limited by guarantee. See www.uppinghamfirst. co.uk. By 2010 the town had secured runner up status in the finals of the East Midlands Enterprising Britain Awards.
In March 2013 The Times newspaper listed Uppingham as 18th in the UK’s fifty most desirable places to visit. In April of the same year it joined the top 1% of communities in the world for broadband speed with phase 1 of its 1Gb ‘fibre to the premise’ (FTTP) network. In 2014, 2015 and 2016 the town was its category winner in the East Midlands in Bloom Awards. In 2014 the Uppingham Webcam (see www.uppinghamfirst. co.uk) was voted the best UK market town project to promote local business. Also in 2014 the town’s Business Forum launched its first Women’s Network with around 40% of its town centre businesses now being led by women. In 2015 Uppingham High Street was announced as one of the top five market town high streets in Britain in the Great British High Street Awards. This brief history sums up what Uppingham is all about. It is a town that is passionately proud of its heritage whilst always looking forward. Today it continues to reflect the spirit of its forefathers, who welcomed new innovations such as stage coaches and railways, as it succeeds in bringing 21st Century technologies such as low carbon vehicles and superfast fibre optic broadband to the town. Uppingham has a proud history of being proactive and its much acclaimed Neighbourhood Plan was a government front runner. It has now published a forward looking Town Centre and Business Zones Plan covering the period up to 2036. See all Uppingham’s plans at www.uppinghamneigh bourhoodplan.info

FRASER URQUHART MEDIA CELEBRATES 18TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ICONIC TITLE media and online content consumption. Fraser Urquhart Media offer these publicity skills to external companies looking to increase their profile through print and online; including contract publishing, copywriting and content providers but also through Public Relations, Events and Introductions.
Fraser Urquhart Media – Leicestershire’s leading publishing and publicity consultants – are proud to be celebrating the 18th Anniversary of their SIXTY9° magazine title, which is one of three luxury print and online titles in their portfolio that now also includes publicity consultants to the luxury sectors. “To say we’re proud is an understatement. To say we’re surprised is also something of a moot point, too. But, what’s not in question is how glad we are to be here. What started off as a drunken conversation in a questionable bar in Leicester quickly became reality, albeit rough round the edges. We like to think SIXTY9° had charm and personality from the off. It also suited a purpose: connecting you to the very best of the Midlands in terms of fashion, clubbing, socialising, arts and all things in between”, says founder, Kevin Urquhart. Group Editor, Jonathan Fraser continues; “From these humble beginnings, we’ve worked longer and harder than we ever thought possible – as many of us SMEs do - developing the business into a multi-media, multi-title publishing business that now includes luxury title, dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND. The remit of being ‘key to the city’ hasn’t changed although how we do it has. The magazines are still super important to us, but we’re massive online and social media publishers these days, too. Across our channels, we reached over 547,000 people last month alone. If you’re not following or liking our platforms yet, we’d urge you to get on board, as there is so much up to the minute content online that never appears in print – and vice versa”. It’s this cross-platform expertise that is leading the publishing market in Leicestershire, as many titles are struggling to find their audience and how to reach them successfully, especially in this era of social

Equation’s goal as a charity is for everyone to have equal, healthy relationships, in a society free from domestic abuse, sexual violence and gender inequality. 1 in 4 women will be abused by a partner, ex or family member at some point in their lives and on average 2 women a week lose their lives because of domestic violence. Working primarily in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, Equation delivers education to the whole community to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence, promote gender equality and raise aspirations for healthy relationships. We provide practical tools and guidance to support the well-being and safety needs of survivors. Previously know as Nottinghamshire Domestic Violence Forum (NDVF), we were founded in 1989 to bring together all the experts working against domestic violence in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. In addition to partnership working, the organisation developed vital services to meet local needs: in 1996 the organisation was the first in the area to establish a central domestic abuse training and awareness programme for local community professionals; in 2000, we supported the launch of the first 24-hour domestic violence helpline in the country by developing safety information cards that promoted the new local service; in 2002, we delivered our first schools healthy relationships project. Our work has continually expanded to meet demand. In 2012 we rebranded as Equation. We maintain our founding ethos of partnership working and our aspirational vision of universal healthy, equal relationships. Equation remains the central local organisation for domestic abuse training and best practice guidance for frontline community professionals, promotion of local domestic violence services and prevention work in schools in addition to running the only helpline for male survivors of domestic abuse in the local area. Presenters Maurice Flynn is a presenter and senior journalist with BBC News. He’s been presenting and producing the weekend news for East Midlands Today for 8 years, but has been with the BBC on-and-off since he was a teenager; inspired to be a journalist after seeing Newsround and Press Gang when he moved from Ireland. In that time, Maurice has worked in news on both radio and TV, but also in rural affairs, lifestyle and entertainment programming. A variety that has helped him hone a warm authority and light-touch approach, and which saw him - aged 31 - become the oldest person ever invited to audition for Blue Peter.
