REGULAR USERS OF THE DRUG FOUND TO HAVE LOWER LEVELS OF INSULIN AFTER FASTING, RESEARCH SHOWS AMSTERDAM

CU PWIN N ER

Cannabis linked to prevention of diabetes Murray Mittleman, of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, and lead author of the study published in The American Journal of Medicine, said previous studies had shown lower rates of obesity and diabetes in marijuana users.

Smoking cannabis may prevent the development of diabetes, one of the most rapidly rising chronic disorders in the world. If the link is proved, it could lead to the development of treatments based on the active ingredient of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), without its intoxicating effects.

Researchers have found that regular users of the drug had lower levels of the hormone insulin after fasting – a signal that they are protected against diabetes. They also had reduced insulin resistance. In the UK latest figures show 2.3 million people used cannabis in the last year, but the numbers have declined in the last decade. Two US states have recently legalised its recreational use and 19 others have legalised it for medical purposes by patients

with one of several conditions including multiple sclerosis and cancer. THC has already been approved to treat the side effects of chemotherapy, nausea in cancer patients, anorexia associated with AIDS and other conditions. The study involved almost 5,000 patients in the U.S. who answered a questionnaire about their drug use and were part of the National Health and Nutrition Survey between 2005 and 2010. The results showed almost 2,000 had used cannabis at some point in their lives and more than one in 10 (579) were current users. Only those who had used cannabis within the past month showed evidence of protection against diabetes, suggesting that the effects wear off in time. Current users of the drug had 16 per cent lower fasting insulin than those who had never used the drug.

Two previous surveys had also shown that although cannabis users consume more calories they have a lower body mass index. The mechanisms underlying this paradox are unknown, the authors say. Joseph Alpert, professor of medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, and editor in chief of the journal, said: “These are remarkable observations that are supported by basic science experiments that came to similar conclusions. “We desperately need a great deal more basic and clinical research into the short and long term effects of marijuana in a variety of clinical settings such as cancer diabetes and frailty of the elderly.” Almost one in 20 adults in the UK has diabetes, of which 2.6 million are diagnosed and 500,000 are undiagnosed. Rates are rising in this country and around the world, driven by Western lifestyles, and the number of cases is expected to exceed 4 million in the UK by 2025. The illness increases the risk of heart failure, kidney failure, and death – and is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK. Source: The Independent

Dutch Passion have re-released Blue Velvet, sister variety to their famous Blueberry. Blue Velvet was first produced in the 1990’s when Dutch Passion and DJ Short collaborated on their now famous Blueberry project. Blue Velvet is a 50/50 indica/sativa though it is the indica genetics which seem to express themselves most clearly producing short, stocky and productive plants which often stay around 60-70cm tall. Outdoors in good conditions she can grow taller, up to 2metres. She has clear fruity tastes with a heavy buzzing stone, and often produces the distinctive blue and violet colourations in both the buds and the leaves. The smoking experience of this variety is said to be very strong yet velvet-smooth, which is where the name came from. Blue Velvet herself is a careful combination of a freaky chocolate Thai, a Mexican Oxacan and a special Afghani Indica. The breeding was done with 20 year old genebank seeds from the original Blueberry/Blue Velvet work. www.dutch-passion.nl

It is with great sadness that Soft Secrets has to announce the death of one of it’s best and longest-serving editors. Bartec Siarna alias Zdenek Vyskoczil, was found dead in his house on friday May 17 2013. Bartec was the chief-editor of Soft Secrets Poland from the start of the magazine in 2008, till his unexpected death last month. With Bartec Soft Secrets not only loses a very enthousiastic, dedicated and able editor, but also a very witty and humourous dear friend. Our thoughts go out to Bartec’s wife Martyna and his 3-year old son Victor, whom Bartec idolised. Because more than a freethinker, a professional and a first-class editor, Bartec was above all a loving father and dedicated husband. Rest in peace dear friend. We will never forget you. Hi Soft Secrets, Here are a few choice pics of my latest project. A Think Different from Dutch Passion. Seed to weed in 75 days under 600w on 18/6 in an oxypot, using Canna’s full range of nutes and extra mollasses, some Cal-Mag and Silicon. Yielding a new personal record of just over 11oz. Not bad considering it came from my veg tent! So sticky and sparkly and so easy to grow. Good lookin Soft Secrets and peace! LADY L Lovely Lady L! We can always rely on you for some super sexy bud pics! 11oz is a cracking weight from any plant, nevermind an Auto. Everyone is going mad for Automatics in the UK and it’s pretty much the same across Europe, looking at these pictures it’s easy to see why! We’ve heard very interesting reports of the Think Different strain; fast to finish and huge yields, the perfect combination. Having said that.... everything seems to get big when Lady L gets her hands on it!

Dear Soft Secrets, Here are some pics of my Northern Lights (Sensi Seed bank). These pics were taken on day 63 and happen to feature my Mrs... Indigo... who loves to pose for your enjoyment. Two clones placed into deep water culture. They were given 3 days veg with Formulex, then 9 weeks flower with Ionic Bloom and Ionic Boost. I think I may have dropped the water level too much in week 4/5. Both plants were under a 600w hps with a 250w warm white eco light for side lighting . We love to read SSUK and look forward to every issue. Thanks for all the top info, G MAN & INDIGO Fantastic! Just look at the legs on those girls! Those plants have grown incredibly tall considering they were only vegged for three days. Northern Lights is an Indica dominant strain, that can stay pretty compact when grown indoors. A longer veg time under a metal halide bulb, will keep them short and stocky and provide a good foundation for bigger yields once you’ve switched to flower. Also, keeping your day and night temps consistant will minimise stretch. Great photos. We look forward to seeing more of the lovely Indigo!

My Garden Angel! Super Cheese grown in small cupboard. As you will agree... nice buds on both! FROM 1 LUCKY FUCKA What can we say? You sure are one lucky fucka! Keep those pictures coming mate.

This is my first ever grow. Not sure what its called, but its definitely some old skool Sativa. I grew it in my wardrobe and this is the biggest bud from the crop, with my girlfriend . Love the magazine, hope you like the pictures. Your girlfriend... in those heels... on that chair! We just can’t stop thinking about the endless possibilities! Great growing friend. Most first timers do well to actually pull a crop, but you’ve managed a very decent looking yield. Also, say hi to your girlfriend from us, we look forward to the next set of pictures!

Dear Soft Secrets, Thanks for the brilliant newspaper! These are two AK X NL, grown from seed. As you can see the buds are rather monstrous! It was mine and my dads first attempt at hydro (AquaFarms) and we were very pleased with the results. Good yield and quality. We used Ferro nutes, tailor made for RO water and all the Canna additives. I very much hope you enjoy the pics of my lovely girlfriend and if you look very carefully there are some plants behind her! PHIL, BARRY AND ANNA Keep it in the family mate! Good work Phil. For a first time in hydro, you guys have pulled an awesome result. Those plants are monsters! The AquaFarm is a great little hydro system that is reknowned for big yields. We love cheeky Anna too. Look forward to the next set of pics, some more big plants and maybe a little less underwear next time. Anna looks like she’s got a great set of buds herself!

GROW WITH LITTLE LEBOWSKI

Outdoor FAQ

the outdoor jackpot! Alternatively, get the tools out and make yourself a nice open spot in the middle of the thorns. When you are visiting the spot and surrounding area, take a look for any signs that other people have been around; fresh litter, dog shit, hedges with straight edges, are all giveaways that other people are visiting the site. Remember that telegraph poles and electricity pylons are usually maintained once or twice a year, so avoid planting out close to these.

Ever wanted to do a crop under that great big grow light in the sky? Growing your favourite plant just as nature intended? Doing an outdoor crop in the UK is a great way of getting yourself some extra bud, without the hassle of electricity bills, filtering stale air out of your house or taking up space in the spare bedroom. If you’ve always fancied trying your hand at an outdoor crop here’s By Little Lebowksi all your questions answered. How much sun do I need?

Realistically, your plants will need 5-7

When should I start? Seeds should be sown in early April, so that they are ready for moving outdoors from mid-May to early June. You can start them indoors under a regular propagation light, CFL lamp or even on the window sill or greenhouse. If you’re happy take some larger plants to the grow spot, you could veg them for 3 weeks under a

hours of direct sunlight per day. To achieve this, you’ll need to find yourself a south facing grow spot. So, when you’re scoping out new grow spots, it’s a good idea to visit a potential spot throughout the day and watch the sun’s position. The more direct sunlight the plants get, the more they’ll develop during the vegetative phase and the better the yields you’ll harvest. You can also use mapping tools on the web to try and determine if your plot receives a decent amount of sun. A program like google earth is great as it allows you to check out satellite imagery of your plot. If your plot faces

Treat your outdoor spot with as much secrecy as you would an indoor grow. In fact, it should really be treated with extra secrecy as anyone could steal your precious crop from an outdoor spot, at least when you grow indoors it’s behind lock and key! It’s a good idea to start looking for potential grow spots the year before you want to do the actual

LOADS OF UK OUTDOOR GROWERS ARE NOW INTO THEIR AUTO-FLOWERING STRAINS metal halide lamp. As you get closer to planting out, harden them off outdoors; just a few hours a day at first to acclimatise them to the outside temperatures. The plants will vegetate through the months of May and June and will be triggered into the flowering photo period after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – after which the daylight hours gets progressively shorter. Most strains will take between 8 and 12 weeks to finish flowering, meaning that crops will be ready to harvest between the end of September to the start of November.

Where shall I do it? Unless you’re lucky (or rich) enough to own a nice bit of land or live in a rural area with no neighbours around you, chances are you won’t be growing in the back garden. This means you’ll be growing guerrilla style in a cheeky secret spot.

grow. Visit the spot a couple of times in each month that your intended grow will be there – May to October – and see how the landscape and foliage changes throughout the growing season. An area that may look well protected in the middle of summer could look very open at a different time of the year and could leave your crop exposed. Wasteland, scrubland and woodland can all provide excellent spots. Use the landscape to your advantage, a tall hedgerow will hide your crop nicely, swathes of nettles will do the same, natural clearings within heavily wooded areas also provide perfect grow spots. Preferably, you’ll want a spot that is difficult to access. If it’s difficult for you to access, then it’s very unlikely that it’ll be discovered by an athletic dog walker or hiker. Thorn bushes are a superb natural barrier that will deter any random person that stumbles into an area. Find an area of thorn bushes with an open piece of ground in the middle and you’ve hit

The great outdoors

9 towards the bottom of the web page, then it’s facing south. If it faces more towards the top of the web page then it’s north facing and won’t receive a decent amount of sun. A spot that receives direct sunlight from early on in the day is best as morning dew will tend to get trapped in buds and may form mould over time. Early sunlight will dry out the moisture trapped in your outdoor buds and will reduce the risk of bud rot.

What shall I grow?

How do I get my plants to the grow spot? Keeping your grow spot a secret means being discrete during your visits, that may prove difficult when you’re trying to transport your plants there. Buts that’s not to say it’s impossible to keep your girls hidden when you’re planting out. Taking them to your spot in a cardboard box or a plastic storage container will keep them safe, but could look suspect if you get spotted. A great way of moving plants around when they’re in a small pot is to wrap them in cylinders of newspaper and fold down the ends

method is to make a ‘tube’ of chicken wire – around a foot in diameter – that can be placed around each plant. This will be enough to keep the pesky bunnies at bay whilst the plants are small and vulnerable. In certain areas of the country you’ll also need to protect against deer, who’ll love to munch on tasty new leaves and shoots. Building a deer fence around your guerrilla grow site isn’t usually an option, so you’ll need to look at other protective measures. Some growers believe that urinating around the site

range then you can treat it in the 3 months prior to setting up your grow; add lime to raise the pH or sulphur to lower it. When you’re planting out, you can mix multi-purpose compost or All Mix into the soil if you wish. It’s also a good idea to use slow release organic fertilisers like worm castings, bat guano, bone meal and feather meal. These can be added to the top soil over the roots of plants transplanted directly into the ground and will break down over a few months and release feed to the plants.

The agony of choice! There really is no shortage of seedbanks to choose from, each one of them will have a strain (or several) that they recommend for outdoor growing and the well informed seedbanks will even provide a latitude range in which to grow each strain. A good strategy when you are embarking on your first outdoor grow is to sow a few different strains and see which one performs best. Just make sure you spread the strains across your various grow spots to minimise the risk of losing a few plants. Durban Poison, Passion No.1 and Northern Lights have a proven track record in the UK for outdoor growing. Loads of UK outdoor growers are now into their auto-flowering strains. These non-photoperiod sensitive plants will flower under any lighting conditions and do not require a specific light cycle. So you don’t have to rely on the days getting shorter in order to get them to flower. This makes them a safe bet for pulling some decent outdoor weed, because you can basically plant them out when the weather is already nice and warm, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be ready to harvest within 60 to 90 days. There are a huge amount of regular and auto strains available. Check the

FIND AN AREA OF THORN BUSHES WITH AN OPEN PIECE OF GROUND IN THE MIDDLE AND YOU’VE HIT THE OUTDOOR JACKPOT! forums for feedback and try them out for yourself to see which works best in your spot.

How do I cover up the smell? Put simply, you don’t! When you’re growing in the great outdoors it’s very unlikely - unless you’re doing a very large number of plants - that the smell will carry to the extent that it gets you into trouble. Having said that, there are a few tactics you can employ that will ensure that your precious plants don’t get rumbled. Don’t plant out close to public roads, footpaths or bridleways; this one is pretty much common sense, the smell of your plants will travel a short distance before it disperses. Also, if you’re very concerned, you may want to try to find a spot near to an area that would mask the smell; farmyards or sewage works are a good cover; just make sure your site is hidden.

spot is near to a river or pool, a fishing rod bag. Plastic drink bottles cut in half also make good carriers; simply place the plant inside and tape the two halves back together. This should make the plants discrete to move around whilst keeping them safe and secure.

Others believe that hanging bars of heavily fragranced soap around the edges of the site will deter the deer. Soap will also last longer, meaning you’ll need to visit the site less frequently than if you were using the ‘pissing method’!

How do I prevent attacks from pests?

How do I make sure the soil is ok for growing?

When you’re growing outdoors, you’re never going to eradicate insects. There’s very little point in spraying for pests as you’re not going to visit the spot often enough to maintain treatments. However, two pests that you will need to protect against are rabbits and slugs. The latter can be sorted out with simple pellets, reapplied to your spot during each visit.

Unless you’re adamant on using containers, you’ll be planting into the ground and letting good old Mother Nature do her work. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with giving nature a helping hand and you’ll undoubtedly get better results if you add some additional feed to the soil. The first thing to do is get yourself a soil test kit from your local garden centre or grow shop and check the pH of the soil. The ideal pH is roughly 6-7, if the pH of your spot is not within this

Rabbits need to be kept away from your plants using a physical barrier; the best

Speak to your local grow shop and they should be able to recommend some suitable feeding products.

How often do I feed and water my plants? After they’ve been planted out, you’ll only need to physically water your plants if the UK is experiencing a severe drought, i.e. no rain for 3-4 weeks. If you’ve picked a spot that has sandy soil that is very fast draining, it may be worth paying a few extra visits to you spot and check that your girls aren’t looking too dry. There is no point investing in mineral feeds and additives as they will quickly leach into the soil after it has rained. If you don’t mind visiting the plants often, you could hand feed them with an organic bloom feed once every other week during flowering. If you don’t want to visit the plants that often, just add some bat guano to the top soil – although you will still need to water this in once a week, unless it rains… which is likely! Happy growing!

One Dutch Passion variety which has a reputation for producing the heaviest of harvests is Think Different. According to many customers she is also the strongest of DP’s varieties. And in Mr GanjaMoto’s growroom the Think Different’s enjoyed perfect conditions.

The plants were grown in a Secret Jardin 3m x 1.5m tent with 200mm air-extraction and 150mm air-inlet. A CO2 boost bucket was used to supplement CO2 levels. The plants were harvested over approximately a three week period the earliest (plant 7) being ready at around

It is unusual to see Plasma lighting, it is an expensive addition to a grow room but Plasma-light enthusiasts will tell you that the spectral output of plasma allows

The photo’s are all from the original diary on the Autoflower Network. Below are comments from Mr Ganjamoto on his special Think Different grow. Mr. Ganjamoto: “Since I lead an organic lifestyle I usually grow organically and achieve some outstanding results, this time however since I’d heard a lot about the DWC technique and the new autoflowering varieties I thought I’d give both a go. I chose Think Different as the Autoflower of choice due to its reputation excellent germination rates, heavy yields and good medicinal qualities.

your plants and your bud to reach new levels of quality. Carbon Dioxide enrichment is used by some growers to improve production levels. Normal atmospheric levels of CO2 went over 400ppm for the first time in May 2013, but pot growers increase CO2 levels to around 2000ppm by supplementing with a yeast/sugar bucket system or a more professional compressed gas cylinder What made this such a special grow was the way Mr Ganjamoto combined all the different elements of expert growing into one single masterclass. The Think Differents were grown in deep water culture, also known as DWC or ‘bubblers’. DWC is complicated to master, but it allows massive levels of growth when combined with quality genetics. In DWC the roots of the cannabis plant grow down into a buck-

et of nutrients. Normally the roots would rot, however DWC uses an air-stone which bathes the root-ball in oxygen and keeps the roots healthy, preventing root-rot. The 20 litre nutrient reservoir is changed every few days and the best growers monitor the pH and EC a few times every day (EC = Electrical Conductivity, the same thing as nutrient concentration). The best DWC growers use experience to gradually increase nutrient concentrations at the cor-

The seeds were purchased and 8 were germinated at the beginning of January and amazingly had a 125% germination rate. Out of the 8 seeds, 10 plants were obtained since 2 seeds contained twins! All the seeds germinated within a 12 to 36 hour period. As reliable as ever from Dutch Passion. Of the ten plants 8 went into bubbler (DWC) pots and two into organic soil which were given away. Each DWC pot was individually maintained and aerated with a 15cm airstone. The nutrients used were Dutch Pro Autoflower Grow & Bloom and Dutch

The smoke quality is enough to satisfy organic connoisseurs despite being DWC grown. Citrus overtones with one or two plants having a minty bouquet, very smooth after an extended flush. The effect through a Volcano vaporiser is extremely pleasant, the world becoming brighter and distinctly chilled, more cerebral than physical - probably due to being harvested with more cloudy than amber lollipops.

Next time I think I’d use 2 x plasma and 2 x 600w Gavita just to enable better control of heat and humidity. BATMIX FROM PLAGRON

SUBSTRATE / FERTILISED

DUTCH PASSION GIVE THEIR BACKING TO VAPORIZERS Support continues to grow for vapourising as a healthy alternative to smoking weed. Dutch Passion explained that they have been impressed with the recent advances to the quality and performance of hand-held vapourisers. Not only are vapourisers ‘smoke-free’ and healthier, they also allow canna-fans to use their pot more efficiently. Converts to vapourisers often claim their stash lasts twice as long compared to smoking joints.

Growing for the best taste and smell Plagron has a comprehensive range of substrates. Each substrate is unique and has quite a few characteristics which can only be expected from the quality substrates of Plagron. Test it yourself and experience the benefits of Batmix!

One other benefit of a vapouriser over a joint is the stealth factor. You can use a vapouriser without anyone nearby being able to smell a thing. A joint can be smelled from some distance. So for some home growers converting to a vapouriser could be a good way to maintain a low profile with neighbours.

Plagron Batmix is organic and a mix of the finest, carefully selected types of peat. It contains various types of fibre and perlite which results in a high level of lightness and oxygen. The abundant presence of unique Plagron worm castings ensures vigorous plant growth and increased water retention. The main nutrient in Batmix is bat manure (Bat Guano). Bat manure is naturally rich in phosphorus and potassium, guaranteeing abundant growth. Only under closely controlled conditions can Bat Guano be processed into the top quality product Batmix.

Visitors to the Dutch Passion website can buy either the Da Vinci or Wispr vapouriser which comes bundled with the Dutch Passion Pro-grinder. Most good grow and head shops and all of the important distributors offer a wide range of vaporizers including the Da Vinci and the Whispr, Dutch Passion does not sell vaporizers to shops and distributors but only offers them to consumers through their website, www.dutch-passion.nl

On the outdoor terrace, with great views of Valencia, we enjoyed the catering area and musical events sponsored by Resin Seeds. Apart from feasting on the delicious food, we also danced to the rhythms of the Rototom Festival, the largest Reggae festival in Europe, which is also held in August in Valencia, a city that has become a landmark in the world of cannabis. Rototom fully expresses the ‘cannabic’ spirit of the city and that they would show this much confidence in Growmed is a great honour. Another event we should mention is the live show with the finalist bands of the Urban o Rama festival, during which 50 bands competed against each other to get to play at Growmed on Friday. After the semi-finals, held on April 6 at Ghandara beach, three groups qualified to play on Friday, April 19, on the outdoor stage; these were Grandma R, T.H.M. and La Caravana, new bands from Valencia who all put on a great show. They had so much fun playing together that they decided to stop competing against each other and share the prize between the three bands. We loved having these promising new faces in the Valencian music scene play at Growmed. We also had an area for indoor activities: dance performances, fixed-gear bikes, long boards and urban sports, as well as a fantastic mural by artist Mike Castelló.

The inaugural Growmed press conference was held on April 19 at 11 am. We started with a superb speaker, Miky Perez,

provided. Being able to help these people is an accomplishment we are extremely proud of, and we are looking forward to follow it up with more successes during the next editions.

He was followed by Dr. Ester Aso, who talked about the ways in which cannabinoids can help Alzheimer’s patients and sufferers of other neurodegenerative disorders. David Ripper gave a class on medical plant extraction and Dr. Gaspar Gonzales talked about the cultivation of cannabis. dedicated to informative lectures on the topic. An inaugural talk to mark the opening of the Medical Area was given by Fernando Caudevilla, who talked about the Use Responsibly campaign, which aims to promote the responsible use of cannabis. Following Caudevilla, Josep Pamiés gave an iconoclastic and revolutionary talk on the use of Stevia and other medicinal plants. Jorge Cervantes, the renowned cannabis guru and Soft Secrets collaborator, shared his wisdom on cultivation for medicinal cannabis users and connoisseurs. The day concluded with a presentation of the BESFES project by Dr. Javier Pedraza. The project aims to give patients honest information about which medicinal plants to use for various symptoms. The BESFES project is just a modest first step towards raising public awareness on medical cannabis, in an area where there is still much research that needs to be done. This year, the symptom studied was pain. The following were declared to be excellent pain relievers: Black Valley by Ripper Seeds, Black Domina and Jack Herer by Spanish Seeds, Somango and Juanita by Philosopher Seeds, and Blue Rhino by Positronics. The following were declared to be good pain relievers: Houchie Kouchie Kush by Makka Seeds, Dance World by Royal Queen Seeds, Jack Flash by Sensi Seeds, Dieseltonic by Resin Seeds, TNT Kush by Eva Seeds, CBD Shark by CBD Crew, Widow by Seedmakers,

Companies and Sponsors Growmed 2013 would not have been possible without the trust of all the exhibitors that attended the fair. We would like to particularly thank Plagron, our main sponsor, as well as the rest of our sponsors: Atami, Greengo, Hesi, Hortitec, Canna, Dinafem, Agrobeta, Sweet Seeds, Future Care Worldwide, Advanced Nutrients, Grass O Matic, Ripper Seeds, Soilless, Kera California and Resin Seeds. They all had excellent stands, which were grouped together in a central aisle, a fantastic choice for Growmed in terms of appearance. In fact, there were so many exhibitors that we’re not going to attempt to list them all, for fear of forgetting someone! It’s fair to conclude that visitors had at their disposal a large sample of companies related to the cultivation of cannabis, from the largest and most important seed companies, fertilizers or tools for indoor growing, to the smallest and most humble grow shops. We are especially proud of the support we received from the Valencian industry, both from seed banks and major wholesalers, as well as the large group of Valencian grow shops that attended as exhibitors and visitors. by Buddha Seeds. which are awarded to the best cannabis products in Europe. The public votes for the best cannabis product, first online and then through a live vote. The products were exhibited in the centre of the fair, where we set up a chill out area, where Victor Santana, the official DJ of the event, selected the music for the entire indoor area. Victor Santana is at an important juncture in his career, with the recent suc-

the marijuana products classified by the BESFES project as being “good” or “excellent” pain relievers. Fair awards were also given; these were voted on by the exhibitors. The award for the best medicinal information went to Pure Seeds, for its excellent medicinal information post presided over by Dr. Marino García de Palau.

Next came the trophies given to the best stands of the fair. This was certainly a hard fight, as all our exhibitors set up very high-quality stands. In third place we had another tie: Canna with its impressive stand which included a large space devoted to the Canna foundation and, on the other hand, Soilless, a new Valencian distributor, with a two-level stand as well as an underwater light installation inside a fish tank, which they had no trouble switching on with absolute safety. Second place for best stand went to Advanced Nutrients, with its impressive stand, the largest at the fair, with 120m2 first level and a second level with an exclusive VIP area, as well as all manner of attractions for the public, such as a roulette, dancers and merchandising gifts. In first place, we had Yervagüena. The main attraction of their stand was, of course, the race car bearing a Soft Secrets

cess of “Vector”, the LP he recorded with his band at the Red Bull studios. On the last day of the fair, we announced the results of the EPA and ran a prize draw, giving voters a chance to win some of the products competing for the award. The award for the best Spanish product was given to a ladybug farm that used ladybugs for natural pest control. The award for the best Dutch product was given to the Filtip filter tips, made of high-quality plastic. The award for the best UK product was given to The Neutralizer, an essential oil vaporizer that eliminates odours. The award for the best German or Swiss product was given to an aeroponic system. The award for the best Italian product was given to Filter It, a range of ceramic filter tips. The award for the best French product was given to the soil substrate Sure to Grow. The award for the best Czech product was given to the vaporizer Discreetvape. Finally, the award for the best European product was given to The Neutralizer, a simple and effective product for odour removal that received the support of many voters.

sticker. The exhibitors clearly had fun taking the Yervagüena Formula1 race car for a spin. Finally, the Soft Secrets magazine gave out two of its most important awards for the year. First, the Cannabis of the Year award for 2013 was given to Skunk #1 by Sensi Seeds. It was about time this veteran got this recognition. And secondly, Cannabis Man of the Year was awarded to Luc y Matej, as well as the rest of the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour team. Finally, we can only say: a huge thanks to the exhibitors and visitors; thanks to the professionals who attended, to the bands and artists, the whole Growmed team and to all who helped promote the event. Of course, many thanks to the readers of Soft Secrets, who are always the most avid supporters of our events! Thanks, thanks, and more thanks! Together, we made it all happen. See you at Growmed 2014!

The award for most fun stand was shared between two companies: Advanced Nutrients, for the great show they put on throughout the show, and Yervagüena, which had a race car as part of their stand. The award for most responsible team went to Canna, for their great teamwork with the Canna foundation, which strives to gather as much information as possible on cannabis and its therapeutic applications. The award for best promotional campaign went to Advanced Nutrients, who did a fantastic job at promoting their brand.

Moby Dick, winner of the Soft Secrets Girl of the Year Award (2010), is one of Dinafem’s best known and most popular cultivars. Dinafem sells its seeds packed in Eppendorf vials, with absorbent color-

The pots were set in a tray, and handwatered with a hydroponic nutrient solution. This type of passive hydroponic system is similar to using soil in pots and is commonly used by both novices and experts. One advantage to using a hydroponic media over soil is that the plant containers can be smaller. The plants remained in these pots for the entire grow. Perlite is difficult to over-water, and is forgiving of minor errors in watering. It can be used alone, as in this grow, or as part of a mixture. Another benefit of perlite is that it can be rinsed and reused repeatedly. The Fox Farm line of nutrients was used, and no deficiencies developed.

Buds are dense but air flow is not a problem

All the seeds were plump and healthy looking, and sprouted quickly in a domed seedling tray. The plants were grown in a small, white plastic-lined indoor closet (.75 m x 1 m x 2 m). five weeks; the Moby Dick was ready for harvest in fifty-nine days, one day shy of the sixty- to seventy-day window given by Dinafem. The final plant height was 101 cm. Manicuring the buds was easy and fast. Dried buds are attractive and hold together well. While not a heavy producer, it is a respectable one. Buds were hung for three days, then went into a closed plastic container to allow inner moisture to work its way out to the leaves. The container was opened at regular intervals to allow condensation to evaporate, and then the buds were enclosed in jars to finish curing.

Moby Dick is a very nice offering from Dinafem: the Haze x White Widow heritage has given this strain dense, tight buds and a strong effect when smoked. It is very mild when dried, and benefits well from a good cure, as the subtle flavors develop as they mature. Mildly spicy in aroma, with a nice mental stone, she’s more psychoactive than most. When dried, the buds hold their integrity well. Moby Dick is worth getting your hands on to try at home, perfect for sitting around with a group of friends, relaxing and talking over snacks. I will definitely make room to grow more of this, next time around.

Northern Light Blue Auto Guanokalong way The buzz about autoflowing varieties, their greater yields and increasing potencies seems to be gaining in intensity. With that in mind, for this grow I decided upon Northern Light Blue Auto by Delicious Seeds. Being mainly Indica, it is a 3rd generation strain, a cross between their Northern Light AUTO and their Blueberry AUTO, which itself was derived from a clone of the famous Original Blueberry developed by DJ Short.

roots, but I reiterate, I wanted to make this grow as simple as possible to see just what the potential was. With this simplicity in mind, I used a 400w HID with a grolux bulb and Maxibright ballast from start to finish. The bulb was fitted into an Enforcer Adjust-a-shade to help increase the available light within the Secret Jardin tent in which the plant was housed. Through the grow, the plant was maintained under an 18.5 hour light

this is a medium sized plant. By now, the roots were much in evidence creeping out from the holes in the bottom of the 18L pot. There was no slouching with growth through the bloom phase either, it was rapid too and soon the branches were laden with bud sites, all of which were quickly swelling and growing. It was easy to see that the plant had now turned its efforts toward the production

The seed had germinated by its second day in a wet and warm environment and it was placed directly into a Root Riot cube which in turn was put into a propagator until there were signs of roots coming from the bottom of the cube. At this point, it was potted up into a small pot before being transferred into an 18L pot to provide more room for root expansion and then watered in with Dutch Pro Take Root into Guanokalong Soil Mix. This soil is a rich composition of macro and microelements as well as additional enzymes which help stimulate advantageous life within the soil and root zone. Within the soil there is a natural source of phosphorus which is present in abundance, but as with the other minerals in the soil, it is gradually released, which helps in reducing the risk of any root burn. To complement the Guanokalong soil choice, I also used their one part grow and one part bloom feeds and adhered to their suggested grow chart. I was very keen to keep this grow as simple a process as is possible in order to see what results just might be achieved. ‘How simple a grow?’ you might ask...well, I never once checked or made any alteration to the pH ....’Arghhh a sin!’, I think most growers may be shouting, but I am fully aware that a correct pH makes a difference in what micro and macro nutrients a plant can access through its

period to benefit from the autoflower’s ability to utilise these extra hours of light. Watching throughout the entirety of its life cycle, the potential of this plant could soon be appreciated. It grew well and rapidly through the vegative stage and around 23 days in, changes toward the flowering stage started to become visisble around about the primordia. During this part of the growth cycle the plant was still continuing to gain in height and the process went on for just over another week, even though it has to be said that

of flowers. As an additive to help facilitate this process I used Future Harvest’s Ton-o-Bud bloom booster. This plant has a large central bud, but it also has numerous fine densely packed lateral buds, which were so easily observed, as was the delightful and delicious looking frosting from the numerous trichomes. After a number of times checking and rechecking the trichomes through a microscope, the day for harvesting finally arrived, we were 11 weeks in and

by Packed Nicely

the plant was looking very well and packed nicely with bud. At this point it is important to say that when it came to trimming, this plant was an absolute delight, displaying a great calyx to leaf ratio which made the process rather quicker than expected and brought a nice smile to the face. After the trim was complete, the buds were weighed...and I must confess, then weighed again to re-check, as I felt I may have miscalculated. I was delighted to find that I hadn’t, this plant had provided a very satisfying 851g of freshly cut and trimmed sweet smelling bud. So considering that there was no control made of the pH throughout the complete grow, I think we might presume that there had been a decent natural stability maintained with this soil and feed schedule as there was no sign of any suffering from the plant and there certainly could be no quams about the yield it provided. Once the drying process was complete, the crystal covered bud was placed onto the scales once more and gave a final weight of just a tad under 7 ounces from this single plant. The buds have a rather delicate aroma, reminiscent of forest fruits and happily, this continues on and through into the taste. Northern Light Blue Auto is said to be of high medicinal value and ideal for relieving chronic pain. I found it an amiable smoke, that gave a nice peaceful state and was ideal for chilling out. I have to say that on the whole, I am rather impressed with this plant and its output. This satisfying yield works out at over half an ounce of dried bud for every week of the plant’s life. The guys at Delicious Seeds say they are proud of it and well, I think they have every right to be!

EPA 2013: BEST EUROPEAN CANNABIS PRODUCTS CHOSEN

The Neutralizer: a champion amongst champions

The Relexy: an instrument for rolling perfect cones with any sort of paper and filling. It allows you to prepare perfect joints

This edition of Growmed brought back the European Product Awards, the cannabis industry’s great celebration where the best products from Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany/ Switzerland, Italy, France and Czech Republic, as well as the overall European champion, are awarded prizes. Until now, the EPA always took place during a great party in Amsterdam, together with the Highlife Cup, but, starting this year, they moved to Growmed Valencia. A panel of judges made the first selection of the best products entered by each country. The finalist products were voted for by the public on the website www.epa. nu, which contains descriptions and photos of each product. The online votes were audited by an independent company. The final points came in during the Growmed 2013 fair, where the public voted for the products they saw exhibited, with the possibility of asking the producers questions on the spot. Each ballot included the telephone number used in random auditing samples.

Switzerland saw the triumph of Growsystem’s aeroponic system. The Italian winner was Filter It, ceramic smoking filter tips. The winner for France was the substrate Sure to Grow and for Czech Republic the Discreet Vape vaporiser. And the moment of announcing the European champion finally arrived: The Neutralizer, a product capable of completely eliminating all cannabis odours during flowering and drying periods and use. This proven effectiveness, along with a marketing campaign characterised by enthusiasm and inter-

Spain The winner for Spain was one of the most original products in the contest, “Cria 7puntos”; a ladybug farm designed to carry out a biological fight against aphids with the help of friendly ladybugs and their larvae. Aside from providing effective and natural pest control, this kit is also very educational for explaining the circle of life to children. Another quite successful Spanish product was the acclaimed Quick Grinder, a grinder with a self-emptying mechanism thanks to two side buttons. Everything is excellently designed in the Quick Grinder, from the inner container that allows a perfect grip to the layout of the inner teeth for perfect grinding. Made with topquality materials. Align: natural insecticide of vegetable origin, produced with Azadirachta Indica seeds, effective for interfering in the pest reproduction cycle. Harmless for human beings and pets.

Spanish product of the year: Cria 7Puntos. The winners’ moment finally came at the end of this long journey, with the award ceremony honouring the European Product Awards. The winner for Spain was Cria 7puntos, a ladybug (and larvae) farm for biological control. The winner for the Netherlands was Filtip, plastic smoking filter tips. The winner for the United Kingdom was The Neutralizer, to neutralise cannabis odours. Germany/

Receiving this well-deserved prize was a special moment for the The Neutralizer team, after a year of hard work in presenting the product. This definitely won’t be the last we’ll hear of the The Neutralizer, since several expert growers have tried it and swear by its working perfectly.

Northstar Recto: professional reflector made with high-quality European aluminium. Designed to not retain the heat produced by the lamp and reduce heat on the plants. Its square design is perfect for grow boxes.

Big Buddha Cheese Auto I decided to try out the relatively new Cheese Auto from Big Buddha Seeds, which has taken them over three years to develop by crossing Big Buddha Cheese with a 3rd generation automatic (reversed). We all know how popular the Cheese variety has become, so I just had to give these autoflowers a go. I thought I would try a comparison using two of the plants in the same Secret Jardin tent, the only major difference being that one of the plants was put into Gold Label Light Mix soil and the other plant was potted up into Guanokalong soil mix. I was keen to give this soil another go after the encouraging results obtained from an earlier assessment. Both seeds responded well and it has to be said, very quickly, once they were placed into a warm environment to begin germination. Within one day there were good signs of the initial root pushing out from both the seeds and they were transferred directly into Root Riot cubes at the end of their second day. I must confess, this quick and very positive response from the seeds is something I have come to

anticipate from the range offered by the guys at Big Buddha Seeds. The seedlings were potted up into small pots within four days of germination. Little did I know at that point, that this speedy impressive growth would continue with such admirable vigour throughout the entire grow. Photo 1 shows the remark-

able development of these plants from their second week through toward the end of their fifth week. There was a rather impressive flourish of growth from both plants during this period, with a profusion of leaves and they were nice healthy looking plants throughout. If any comment were to be made at this point, it might be said that the plant growing in the Guanokalong soil mix looked somewhat greener and more lush. That said, they both displayed similar growth in both height and width.

third and fourth week of the flowering stage to help increase flowering sites on the plant and also to aid in ensuring nice firm buds. When bud formation got into full swing it slowly became evident that there was a slight difference in the appearance between the buds on each of the plants.

glistening effect upon the swelling buds. It was, as ever, a comforting site to behold. At harvest both plants were cut and then individually weighed. There was a visible difference between the flowers on the two plants. The buds on the plant that had been grown in the Guanokalong soil mix certainly had a much frostier appear-

They were grown beneath a 400w Grolux bulb and an Enforcer Adjust-a-shade to help spread the useful light and both of the plants were fed throughout the vegative stage with Guanokalong Grow feed, a one part nutrient. After a couple of weeks the feed schedule was switched to the Guanokalong Bloom, another one part formula, in order to provide the necessary nutrients to facilitate flower production. Oh, how we love our flowers! The pH when untreated had a propensity to linger around a value of 7, so with Cannabis preferring a slightly acidic pH of around 5.8 - 6.5 to better access the full range of micro and macro nutrients, I periodically added pH Down to their feed schedule accordingly, to bring it within this range and maintain it. I used CO2 tablets within the tent, to supplimented the supply of this gas to the plants and provide adequate amounts for photosynthesis. Along with the single part bloom feed I also introduced a bloom booster. I finally decided on using Future Harvest’s Ton o’ Bud, which again was used on both plants. It is a highly concentrated NPK 0-49-32, turbo milled granular formula that needs to be made up into solution and happily, it can be used in conjunction with any other nutrient range. One beauty of this product is that it doesn’t degrade over time like some liquid feeds may. So the boost was on! I used it through the

The buds forming on the plant grown in the Guanokalong soil mix were looking tighter than those on the plant in the Gold Label Light Mix which seemed to be somewhat fluffier in appearance. On the other hand, this difference did dissipate as the flowering progressed toward the final few weeks. There came a point where the use of some plant yoyo’s was really essential. The heavier buds on the plant tops were beginning to weigh too much for the plant stems to support...though I can’t say I was complaining at all. The lateral shoots didn’t look too shabby either. They were all sustaining the weight of their own nicely formed buds. Both plants were demonstrating very nice trichome formation at this point and this provided a

ance, the resin glands looking much more prominent than those of the plant grown in the Gold Label light mix. However, in actual bud production there didn’t at that point look to be much difference between the plants. As it turned out, both plants yielded well, with that in the Guanokalong soil mix providing 666g when freshly cut and just under 6 ounce when dry and the plant grown in Gold Label Light Mix produced 623g wet weight and just over 5 and a half ounce when dry. So it has to be said a very pleasing return for their ten weeks of growth. Between them, the plants provided plenty of nice cheesy goodness with that old familiar classic skunk taste and those wonderfully enchanting fruity overtones.

Anticipation peaked when the cycling clothing was unpacked. We were impressed by the professional-looking sets, on which sponsors like Rabobank and Garmin had

Noteworthy with cycling is always how quickly it improves the condition of its participants. While at the start of the first climbs drivers often sound like they should be immediately connected to an oxygen device, on the second day they are already taking the slopes with much more ease. The peloton was regularly whipped apart, sometimes by a very steep or long climb, sometimes by dizzying descents where even the following vehicles could not keep up with us. But we always found each other again. When someone had a flat tire, or when climbing expert Roos was frequently plagued by a loose chain, there was

Goosebumps and tears Unfortunately, the second stage of MC Biketour was not without mishaps. On a piece of dirt road three riders crashed on a corner. As if by a miracle, the damage was limited to abrasions, although unlucky Jaka had to be checked for sprains in a hospital. Fortunately for him the damage was relatively moderate.

Doping That there is such a thing as a runner’s high has long been known. But that you can also reach an unprecedented state of euphoria from cycling is something you never hear about. Yet the rush you get from cycling through your pain threshold day after day is phenomenal. She finished the rest of the route at her own pace, though oddly she would go on to arrive first in Valencia. The peloton dives yet another ravine.

As we entered the outskirts of Valencia in close formation I saw tears welling up in the eyes of some fellow travellers. I myself also struggled with emotion. I felt like we were mythical warriors, proudly returning to the home castle after heavy battles. We really did achieve something

GROW WITH LITTLE LEBOWSKI

The Race To The Bottom

By Little Lebowski

Not so long ago, growing indoors was an exclusive club, like a secretive society. There was just a handful of grow shops in the UK. Growers travelled for hours to pick up their grow equipment and receive expert advice from the bloke behind the counter. Equipment was imported from Holland and the prices reflected this. Nowadays, things have changed significantly. While it’s not exactly true to say that growing has become mainstream – plod might have something to say about that! – it has certainly become far more widespread. There are several hundred grow shops in the UK and, unless you live in the highlands of Scotland, you’re never really more than 10-15 minutes’ drive from picking up your grow gear. In some regions, it’s more like 2 minutes’ drive; there are over 60 shops in Birmingham and the surrounding area alone! As with any business market that grows in popularity (and profitability) the number of products available to the consumer has increased. We still import products from Holland, but they now share shelf space with grow gear from the US, Canada and Australia, plus a huge volume of products that are designed and manufactured right here in the UK. For us, the growers, this seems like good

Unfortunately, the only loser in this race is us… the growers.

they’ve reluctantly taken stock of the budget items.

Now, I’m not saying that I’m adverse to value products. In fact, there was a stage in life that my very existence depended on the availability of value bread and beans from a certain large supermarket chain! But, those value products were fit for purpose. The ones we’re discussing in this article are not. A quick browse online will pull up all the examples you need. Some of the complete tent packages available on eBay are just ridiculously cheap. Not necessarily because the components themselves are crap – although we’ll get to that shortly – but because the parts are mismatched and not fit for purpose. For example, a 2.4m x 1.2m tent package with two 600w light kits is offered with just a 4” filter and a TT fan as an outtake. It may be cheap

If you’re new to indoor growing and have seen cheap equipment advertised online, or even in a grow shop, there’s no need to be put off completely, just educate yourself and ask a few well-placed questions to the seller and you’ll find out if the products are of a good enough quality to spend your hard earned cash on. Let’s start with having a look at one of the products that has seen some serious reductions in price over the years; grow tents. Back in the day, there was one brand of grow tent available. Now it seems there’s a new brand being released every month and, usually, they are at the cheaper end of the market. Put simply, a grow tent is a portable room in which a light and fan / filter unit can be hung above the plants. Historically, many growers created their own ‘room within a room’ by putting together a simple wooden frame and fixing reflective sheeting (either white or silver) to the walls, floor and ceiling. The grow tent follows this concept, but is easier and quicker to put together, is light proof and waterproof, and can be easily dismantled and hidden away in-between grows.

A true 600w will run at around 655w So, what products are we talking about specifically? It’s the hardware that compromises the very foundations of growing indoors; tents, lights, fans and filters. The key components that regulate the environment that your plants grow in and, as any good grower will tell you, environment is everything.

Putting some of the more advanced features of the top end tents aside, if you’re going to go for a grow tent rather than knocking together a cheap and simple frame with sheeting, it needs to be able to meet the following basic criteria; Be easy to dismantle and reassemble between grows – this is one of the main points of having a grow tent rather than a permanent grow room set up.

SHOPS ARE FACED WITH AN ONSLAUGHT OF NEWBIE GROWERS COMPLAINING THAT THEY CAN GET EVERYTHING CHEAPER ONLINE news and, for the most part, it is. More competition between manufacturers and shops means more product innovation, better quality products being made available and – most importantly - lower prices. Walk into any decent grow shop and you’ll see that this is all true. There’s a huge amount of product choice out there and a lot of it is of a high quality, which – in theory – will help you pull a bigger yield. But, as the industry gets bigger and competition becomes fiercer and fiercer, something else is happening. Rather than striving to produce better products and compete through innovation, some manufacturers are participating in a race to the bottom of the price / quality spectrum.

as chips, but with such an underpowered extraction kit it will cause huge problems for the inexperienced grower that’ll most likely buy it, after they’ve been seduced by that cheap price. These cheap packages also create a problem for the grow shops, who are now faced with an onslaught of newbie growers complaining that they can get everything in the shop cheaper online; not realising that the products aren’t of the same quality. So, the shops have had no choice but to get the cheap gear in… if you can’t beat them, join them. Right? I’ve spoken to several shop owners who, in the past, refused to stock cheap light kits on the basis that they were of dubious quality and output. However, after a few months of seeing customers turn on their heels and walk out of the shop,

Good quality tents support a large filter and fan

29 You should be able to easily dismantle it after a crop, store it away and then

Be lightproof – important for two reasons; a tent that leaks light into a room

RATHER THAN STRIVING TO PRODUCE BETTER PRODUCTS AND COMPETE THROUGH INNOVATION, SOME MANUFACTURERS ARE PARTICIPATING IN A RACE TO THE BOTTOM set it back up when you’re ready to do another grow. This means it’ll need to have robust zips that will last a few goes and reinforced corner material that won’t rip when you’re setting up or taking the tent down.

could attract unwanted attention from nosey neighbours or house guests, which could lead to your grow being rumbled. Also, if the tent material allows light into the growing environment it will adversely affect the way that your

plants grow. Plants that are not given 12 hours of complete darkness during the flowering stage can start to re-veg. At the very least the flowering stage could be prolonged, which will cost you time and money. Worst case scenario, it can make you girls go hermaphrodite. Be waterproof – good quality grow tents will have a waterproof liner to put into the base of the tent. It’s not essential if your tent is in a basement or garage, but it’s very handy if the tent is in an upstairs room or loft. Even if you’re just hand feeding your plants, there’s always the odd occasion that you spill water or overfeed slightly and it’s good to have that waterproof base for added security.

Be strong enough to hang your equipment from – even a budget tent should be strong enough to hang a single fan, filter and euro reflector for the duration of a full grow without bending or snapping. If you’re considering a larger tent, where 2, 3 or 4 lights will be required then you really need to make sure that the corner pieces and tent poles are going to be strong enough to handle the weight of the lights, plus a larger fan and filter. There’d be nothing worse than arriving to check on your grow, only to find that your tent had collapsed under the weight of the equipment! Next up is the fan and filter combo. To be perfectly honest, cheap carbon filters

Give your plants a good environment and they’ll pay you back!

30 aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Carbon, whether it’s pelletised or granular, is so effective at scrubbing the air that even the cheaper filters on the market will still do the job provided that the carbon has been tightly packed. This ensures that the grow room air extracted through the filter has to pass through the carbon bed and will be scrubbed of odour. Air will pass through the path of least resistance, for example, any gaps in the carbon or loose carbon. This will affect the performance of the filter and, worst case scenario, will render the filter useless. This will obviously cause you problems. There is an easy test for this, if you’re buying the filter in a shop; pick it up and shake it. There should be no movement

There are plenty of cheap inline fans available, with varying degrees of quality. The key is to match the fan and filter size to your grow space; you’ll want to be replacing the air in the room about once a minute. If you’re buying a larger fan and filter set up, make sure that the fan has enough torque to pull the correct volume of air through the filter. One trick that some of the retailers use to keep the price down is to sell the kit

won’t grow without it! It’s seems bizarre that some growers want to scrimp and save on such an essential piece of hardware. A 600w light kit with a magnetic ballast is possibly the one item that shops compete over the most and, predictably, there are some seriously crap products out there!

PAY THAT LITTLE BIT EXTRA FOR THE BASICS IN YOUR ROOM AND YOUR PLANTS WILL REWARD YOU TENFOLD! of carbon whatsoever. If there is, avoid that filter. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible when buying online. So, it’s best to avoid unbranded products altogether or ensure that you’re buying from a reputable online retailer. One important question to ask the retailer, whether in the shop or online, is the recommended lifespan of the filter. Some of the budget filters on the market have a life expectancy of just 9-12 months. For peace of mind; replace the filters 3 months before the recommended life expectancy.

with a low torque fan that has really been designed as an intake fan rather than an outtake. Last thing, but by no means least, is the grow light. Undoubtedly the most important component of your grow room, Buying filters online? Stick to your plants simply reputable brands

The most important part of the light kit is the ballast; it’s the big heavy box that provides the correct amount of power to your grow lamp. We could debate how manufacturers save money by cutting corners in the internal workings of their magnetic ballast, but that’s for another article, the most important point is this; a true 600w ballast will pull between 650-660w of power. Around 50w of energy is lost as heat and the remaining 600w are then used to power the lamp. Some of the cheap magnetic ballasts on the market do not run at anywhere near 650w, some of

A Scientific Challenge The other evening I met up with my old friend Eddie. We catch up once or twice every year and chat about this and that. We’ve been friends since we were in our mid teens, and, without giving too much away, that’s a lot of years. Back in the day, Eddie and I used to spend a lot of time drinking beer and smoking dope: lots and lots of dope. We did this for a number of years and neither of us came to any grief or harm because of it. But then, of course, time passes, things change, you grow up and get different priorities. All of that kind of stuff has to move down the list a bit. Eddie carried on and stayed in the getting stoned out of his tits at every opportunity place for a number of years after I’d stopped it, but then even he had to wave a reluctant goodbye to that lifestyle as various responsibilities encroached on his life. I’d have to say that for many years Eddie was possibly one of the most serious stoners I’ve known. Anyhow, the other evening the chat turned to weed and he confessed that it’s something he still really, really misses. He hasn’t touched it in nearly fifteen years and yet he still, on occasion, dreams about being stoned. The problem Eddie has is that he works for the railway and therefore could potentially be subject to a random drug test at work. Any sign of dope at all and he gets the boot, end of story, and nothing neither he nor his union can do about it. It all comes down to the fact that residual dope can lie about in the human body for up to 28 days. Eddie’s place of work – along with all the others who

them run as low as 550w! This is bad for two reasons, the first is that you are basically being ripped off and are not getting what you paid for, the second is that you are under-powering your lamp and this has serious implication for your plants. A good quality 600w HID grow lamp, whether it be metal halide, high pressure sodium or dual spectrum is designed to run at 600w. The chemical elements in the bulb have been specifically included to provide the optimum amount of usable light when powered at 600w. If that bulb receives 10% less power than it requires, it doesn’t just mean that it emits 10% less light. It could actually mean it’s emitting the wrong light altogether, because when the gasses in the bulb are ignited with a lesser amount of power the light that is generated won’t be within the manufacturers intended spectral distribution. A larger portion of the light will not be usable for the plant and this will seriously affect yield. If in doubt, get the electricity meter out and check the ballast, you may be surprised at what you find! Put simply, the old saying “you only get out what you put in” has never been truer! You don’t have to spend a fortune to set up a decent grow, but pay that little bit extra for the basics in your room and your plants will reward you tenfold! Happy growing!

Dr Dee

employ random testing – don’t seem able to differentiate between someone who is stoned on the job (not good, obviously) and someone who got stoned almost a month earlier and apart from a trace of THC in his or her urine is completely compos mentis. My personal view on this is “what makes it any of their business what someone does on their days off work”, but I’m not the employer. Eddie made the point that the majority of his colleagues drink alcohol like it’s going to be banned tomorrow and turn up at work with hangovers of the type that make them pretty much useless and in some cases a danger to themselves and others but that this is okay because booze is legal. We spoke about a whole lot of different stuff, legal highs, synthetic cannabinoids, designer cannabinoids, weed modified for a higher THC content, weed modified for a higher CBD content, the whole kit and caboodle, in fact. And at this point, we had an idea that, if it’s in any way doable, would amount to total genius. Rather than all the farting about with the potency of the weed and all the “it’s a heavy stone” or “it’s a light stone” kind of stuff, it would be really great if the minds of the individuals who do that kind of thing might be focused on something really and truly useful, which is to say a strain of weed that’s completely out of the system within, say, 48 hours. As Eddie said, it wouldn’t have to be anything stronger than your average weed, as long as it was 100% guaranteed out of the system. I reckon that would be worth a prize of some sort, plus the creator would have the eternal gratitude of millions of wage slaves the world over. Anyone out there up to the challenge?

GROWING TIPS

Manipulating Bigger Buds I was lucky enough to learn about plant manipulation from a friend long before I got my hands on any cannabis-related reading materials. After seeing the effects it had on my plants, I wanted to know why

newer top growth. Our girls spend a lot of energy keeping any damaged or sick leaves going, so it’s always better to get rid of them at first notice and get the energy flowing to where we want it most.

DON’T PANIC IF YOU SEE SOME LIQUID OOZE OUT OF THE PINCHED SPOT, IT’S JUST WATER! damaging branches and leaves increases the yield and what other techniques are there that I can use to manipulate even larger harvests. I’m often asked, “How many plants can I grow under this light?” My response is always to start with a different question: How can you fill the space? To answer that, you’ll need to first think about what techniques you’ll use to grow those plants.

Lastly, foraging also involves the removal of larger fan leaves toward the top that heavily shade out the bottom of the plant, allowing light to penetrate further down.

Super croppingThe first plant manipulation technique I learned was taught to me by a longtime

friend whose garden was always producing enviable harvests. When I asked him for pointers so that my plants produced like his, he proceeded to kneel down over one of my plants and said, “Don’t freak out. I promise I won’t really hurt anything. The plant will be better than ever tomorrow.” I took a deep breath and gave him my utmost trust. I watched as he wrapped his thumb and a finger around the main stem (meristem) near the top of the plant, and then squeezed. He applied just enough pressure to damage it without breaking the stem completely. Then he gently folded over the stem at the point of the pinch, and stepped away. It was my turn to try. He pointed to another opportune spot on the plant, and told me to pinch just enough to feel

a ‘pop’ between my fingers. This was my introduction to super cropping. A major advantage to super cropping is that it strengthens the whole integrity of the plant, more specifically the stems, to support more vegetative growth and cola weight down the road. It can also be used to control the physical size and height of the plant without the need for chemicals that claim to have the same effect, such as bush load or phosphoload, which alter plant hormone regulation. Using this technique, we are intentionally damaging the inner vascular tubes to force the plant to heal itself, creating scar tissue and a ‘knuckle’ at the pinch point. It will eventually get the juices flowing again to the top growth but for the next 24-48 hours

At the heart of plant manipulation is the redirection of plant energy. Depending on the technique, this could mean a temporary redirection or a permanent redirection. In doing so, we’re asking the plant to concentrate on specific areas during its growth cycle to bring about certain consequences: stronger plant body, larger buds, etc. Similar to bonsai, we are changing the shape, size and energy flow within the plant to create these effects. We’re able to use these manipulation techniques to make any number of plants fill any size room, and all the while maximizing the harvest potential.

ForagingSomething we all do as growers to care for our plants is to remove any foliage that looks unhealthy or that is damaged. Foraging, the most basic form of plant manipulation, refers to the removal of leaves that may appear discolored, damaged or necrotic. This allows the plant to displace the energy it would normally spend on those lower or damaged leaves and send it to the extremely efficient

FIM- Using fine tip scissors or a blade, remove just a bit of the center growth

34 ing tendency for all things plants do. The apex bud (also called the terminal bud) of cannabis plants will always end up as the biggest and strongest due to its close vicinity to the light. The plant knows this bud is the best shot it has at reproduction and applies what is called apical dominance, sending the most energy up to the top growth. It’s like giving the best player on your team the most playing time to ensure your shot at the finals. During normal growth, a

TOPPING COULD EFFECTIVELY DOUBLE OR TRIPLE YOUR FLOWERING POTENTIAL.

TOPPING- The arrows point to the 2 nodes that will become apically dominant once the top is removed the plant will redirect the energy it would have expended on apex growth down to the foliage below the pinch point. It will ultimately result in a stem that is visibly thicker and stronger than one that was never super cropped.

GROWER TIP: running silicates as an additive also strengthens the cell walls of the plant, and when used together with cropping you will have an even strong plant.

ToppingTo begin, select a plant that has a few sets of leaves and nodes at least 6-8” tall. The idea is to apply this technique at a location on the plant with the most active growth in order to redirect that energy to all areas below the point of pinching. Next, place your thumb and forefinger around the main stem in between the top two sets of nodes and squeeze. Apply only enough pressure to feel the xylem pop, much like relieving pressure on a blister. Don’t panic if you see some liquid ooze out of the pinched spot, it’s just water. The most important thing is to avoid severing the stem completely which would result in ‘topping’ the plant instead. The plant should fully recover within a few days, with the folded over stem once again reaching up toward the light and scar tissue forming the knuckle at the pinch point. You can repeat this technique as the plant grows vertically in between each ascending node; the scar tissue makes it too difficult to pinch the same spot twice and doing so may cause irreparable damage. But as for the rest of the plant, my personal super cropping motto is ‘If there is a spot to pinch, I’m pinching’.

top off with your fingers. I suggest always using scissors or a blade whenever you’re cutting anything off your plant. Otherwise it’s very easy to cause damage by trying to rip off leaves and branches; plus using tools ensures accuracy. As to not confuse this method with the pinching done for super cropping, we will call it topping. Removing the top transfers the apical dominance from the one terminal bud to the two nodes immediately below the point of cutting. Then, what was one

plant will send suppressive hormones to the auxiliary or lower shoots, slowing down their growth and saving the majority of the plant’s energy for the apex bud. “Topping” is a term used by cannabis growers to refer to the cutting of the top main shoot. Some call it pinching because you can literally just pinch the

apical dominant cola becomes two apical dominant colas. Admittedly, neither of these colas will ever be as strong as the main cola you just lopped off, but two is better than one in this case, or three or four! Topping could effectively double or triple your flowering potential. In addition, this process will also encourage rapid growth to all branches below the cut point, not just the two nodes direct-

LOLLIPOPPING- Follow the stem down sliding your pressed fingers to remove unwanted lower growth

35 Lollipopping isn’t ideal for every grower; some people don’t mind having the whispy buds grow toward the base of the plant, are happy with their cola size as is and choose not to apply this method. For those of us that want our plants to produce the biggest nuggets possible, this is the technique that will help provide those buds with enough energy to achieve their full potential mass. As we’ll discuss later on, this manipulation is used very heavily in the SCROG method.

FIMA newer practice that has risen in popularity among growers is the accidentally developed FIM (Fuck I Missed) technique. This method can have crazy effects on cola development when the cut is done accurately. This technique, like topping, also involves cutting the top (apex) flower site, but instead of cutting the whole thing off from the stem you leave a small percentage of it. Almost like, “Oops, I missed some of this node when I tried topping the plant.” This can result in up to 6-8 shoots forming out of the one node that was partially cut. SUPERCROPPING- Select a spot to pinch, fold over at the pinch point and allow 24-48 hours for the plants internal healing process ly beneath. Similar to super cropping, topping is another form of intentional

To apply this method, hold the stem between your thumb and pointer fin-

ALL OF THESE MANIPULATION TECHNIQUES INVOLVE STRESSING OUT YOUR PLANTS – THE KEY IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT CONSTITUTES A HEALTHY AMOUNT OF STRESS damage to the plant for the purpose of redirecting energy, but with vastly different results in comparison. To apply the topping method to your plants, first select a space in between nodes near the top of the plant where you would like to cut, then simply cut and remove the top. Instead of just throwing these cuttings away, some growers will cut enough of the top off to be able to use them for clones and start a perpetual harvest cycle.

LollipoppingThis next method involves removing a significant amount of healthy growth from your plant, and for this reason it scares a

just one or two plants. That way your entire harvest won’t be ruined if executed incorrectly, and you’ll have a side-by-side comparison with the plants that didn’t get the new treatment. Lollipopping is on the opposite side of the spectrum from topping and yet can be used in conjunction with it. Here, instead of cutting or damaging new growth, you’ll concentrate on it by removing everything except the newest growth at the end of a branch. The term lollipopping comes from the way the branch looks after applying this manipulation. You’ll wind up with what looks like a lollipop stick with a delicious cola adorning the top (hence, a lollipop).

ger, starting just below the top 3-4 sets of nodes or wherever you anticipate

Being fairly new, this technique has mixed reviews from growers and it’s probably because the results definitely vary from plant to plant even when performed exactly the same on each one. 100% accuracy when trying to cut just part of the node is almost impossible, but between trial and error and knowing your strain, you will find a happy medium for how much to cut. This technique is done by using fine tip scissors to cut a chunk out of the middle of the very top new growth, located on the main stem. It will look like a bunch of small leaves bunched up, but

your canopy to be. With your other hand, hold the stem at a point above your fingers. Apply a small amount of pressure and gently pull all the way down the stem to the base of the plant, taking care not to damage the stem this time. The growth that is in the path of your traveling fingers should come off fairly easily. Removing this lower growth channels all the available energy to the flower sites that are left at the top. With fewer flowers per branch to worry about supplying energy to the plant will inevitably produce bigger, denser buds.

be careful to not cut it all off which would essentially be topping. So far we’ve focused on plant manipulation to produce the biggest yield off of a plant. Now let’s talk about filling the space with plants. Because it’s not always more plants that gets you more yield, it’s also how you fill your space with the plants. With indoor grows the light source is typically coming from the same direction: overhead. Without a “sunrise” or “sunset” the triangular shape of most cannabis plants make it difficult for the stationary overhead light to penetrate down to the

37 lower parts of the plant. This is where the importance of reflective material on the walls and even supplemental side lighting comes into play in your grow room, which is another option to contain and spread out the light you have. Height will also be an issue for the typical indoor grower, especially when growing sativa dominant

does create a down side however, allowing for almost no mobility, which in turn could make accessing the inner plants a task. Before you install the trellis netting, be sure to complete all your manipulations and verify that there are no pest issues that will require access to all the plants later on.

your branches to grow horizontally for a while along the screen, tying them to it along the way. You can either use a back and forth or a spiral pattern with the ties to fill the trellis. This technique brings every node to the same height of the screen and sends them reaching up vertically toward the light to create your

air flow from the base of the plant. Top and super crop the upper branches as many times as it takes to even out the canopy. The key to a successful SCROG is to train the branches to be spaced out evenly and at approximately the same in height. You won’t have lower whispy looking buds with this type of grow, but big main colas that receive the same intensity of light at the same height. SCROG requires enough veg time as it takes to train the plants properly, and a diligent grower. Training your branches to grow horizontally for this is a type of Low Stress Training (LST). LST involves using plant stakes, string, wire, velcro, trellis nets, twist ties or anything else you can use to tie and train your branches, all without cutting or damaging them. Up until now we have only discussed High Stress Training (HST) techniques: cutting or damaging a plant obviously causes a higher level of stress than coaxing the stems one way or another with ties. When it comes down to it, all of these manipulation techniques involve stressing out your plants – the key is understanding what constitutes a healthy amount of stress. Don’t forget that too much stress can cause your girls to hermaphrodite (among other things), possibly leading to an eventual loss that could set a grower back. So exercise caution and remember to test on a few plants before applying to the whole crop. As effective as these plant

strains that love to stretch. Growers have gotten creative of the years, coming up with a variety of ways for us to gain control over these issues. For example, the Sea of Green (SOG) method which is great for banging out harvests quickly and is all about space and time management. The SOG method attempts to use every inch of lighted space by packing small plant containers (½ L-1L) side by side and sending them into bloom after only 1 week (2 weeks max) vegetative time. Here, instead of filling your grow room with only a few big plants that would require a longer veg period, you will have a larger number of plants but with less yield per plant. This means a constant rotation of blooming plants which translates into less waiting time in between crops. The Screen of Green (SCROG) method is one of the most popular grow room setups among indoor gardeners because you can grow full-size plants that produce heavily, in any size space. This technique combines lollipopping with topping, and introduces a trellis net or screen to act as a support system for the plant (and also to restrict its vertical growth). In doing so, it also creates a visible ‘sea of green’ with a stationary canopy of colas. A very beautiful sight I must add! This varies from the SOG method because you are not simply filling the space with as many plants as you can to get the sea of green look. Instead, you’re using a few plants and manipulating their size and shape to fill the space. This stationary canopy

FIM- Remember for FIM to leave a small percentage of the new growth in tact and remove the rest To use the SCROG method, you’ll need to manipulate the plant during early vegetation to multiply the number of main colas it will have. Start with a plant that has grown to at least 6-8” and place in your desired pot. Make sure it’s big enough to handle your plants root system for the full cycle. Use the above topping instructions to get your desired number of branches, depending on the size of your space and container. Train

cola canopy. To sustain the increased production with this number of colas you should then use the lollipop method on the rest of the plant, removing everything below the level of your trellis will be. With this setup the light will not be able to penetrate below the canopy that your colas will create, so removing this vegetation is the best way to direct that energy to where it will be most useful. It also inadvertently allows for more

manipulations are they won’t get the job done on their own. Your plants also need a full feeding schedule of light, water and nutrients to produce those picture-perfect buds. This is where physics, chemistry and biology all meet in the garden. Getting the balance just right requires some tinkering but the result is reaching your maximum potential.

Soft Secrets is published by Discover Publisher BV P.O.Box 362, 5460 AJ, Veghel, Netherlands Telephone: +31-(0)73-5498112 Fax: +31-(0)73-5479732 E-mail: info@softsecrets.nl Editor: Cliff Cremer Contributors: Little Lebowski, Ed Rosenthal, Jorge Cervantes, Dr. John Dee, Grubbycup, the Professor, Kali Mist, Buddy Kush, Sativa Diva, Ganjah Selecta and others Comics: Jim Stewart Editorial adress: E-mail: ssuk@softsecrets.nl Advertisements: E-mail: info@softsecrets.nl A word from the publisher: The UK government has embarked on a process of relative liberalisation towards the use of cannabis, and cannabis activists are engaged in broadening this engagement. Several local councils and police chiefs now actively support a Dutch-style coffeeshop system as a way of separating soft and hard drugs, as it has proven to do in Holland. Whether they are finding their way to new coffeeshops or growing for their personal supply, cannabis users are a menace to no one, and are causing no discernable social problem. Some politicians and commentators are calling for the outright legalisation of marihuana. Let’s wait and see how the debate develops during a period of relative peace between all sides of the argument. In the meantime, the publisher hopes Soft Secrets will show the public a positive side to the normalisation of cannabis use, and is anxious to offer a forum to both pro- and anti-legalisation advocates. This assumes that the publisher does not necessarily agree with everything that appears in articles and advertisements. The publisher therefore distances himself explicitly from published statements or images that might give the impression that an endorsement is being made for the use or production of cannabis.
