Volume 23, Issue 2
DIRECTOR’S UPDATE Signs of summer indicate it is almost time for our annual summer reading event for all ages. Our statewide theme this year is Every Hero Has a Story! We look forward to celebrating the fun of reading with you this summer and hope that your story will include many visits to the Library. Take a peek inside this newsletter for some highlights of our Superheroes activities. Stay tuned for the grand opening of our new Early Literacy Center and Digital Media Studio this summer. Our children’s area has recently been renovated to include interactive learning stations to facilitate early literacy development through play. The focus of the Early Literacy Center, Dive Into Reading, is to offer an exciting opportunity for preschoolers to be engaged with the learning process and have fun at the same time. Our popular Play. Learn. Grow. Family Place early literacy program continues with its second series in July. Additionally, the Library will soon open an audio recording studio, video recording studio with green screen, and a digital editing room available for public use. We thank the following foundations for their support of these projects: The Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation, The FrostParker Foundation, The Mylander Foundation, The Sam S. and Rose Stein Foundation, and the Erie County Foundations’ Council of The Erie County Community Foundation. While many new and exciting opportunities appear inside our doors, the core of the Library is rooted in history. Sandusky Library is home to three historic properties: the original Carnegie Library, built in 1901, the former Erie County Jail, built in 1883, and the Follett House Museum, built 1834-1837. Each of these buildings requires constant attention to maintain their integrity for current use and future generations. In April one of the three rooftop air conditioning units on the Library was replaced as part of long-term maintenance. This extensive project was planned over twelve months. The work was invisible to the public and the installation was completed without disruption to library service. The unit is in place just in time to keep us cool this summer. Our newest Little Free Library (LFL), sponsored by Murray & Murray, was recently installed by the City of Sandusky in Lions Park. The Sandusky Lions Club will be the Stewards of the LFL and make sure it is stocked with books (pictured left). The other four Little Free Libraries are in the following locations: the SPARC bus stop next to the Merry-Go-Round Museum on Jackson Street (Sandusky), near the gazebo in Facer Park on Shoreline Drive (Sandusky), near the large playground and Shelter #2 at Osborn MetroPark (Perkins), and in the church yard on North Water Street in Castalia. Thank you to the City of Sandusky and to all of our Little Free Library Stewards. For more information about LFL, visit littlefreelibrary.org. Enjoy your summer, and please visit the Library to attend one of our programs, to use a computer, or simply to find a cool place to read.
Gardiner crews hoist the new air conditioning unit to the roof of the Library by crane in April. Photo provided by Gardiner. If visiting the Lake Erie Islands is part of your summer, remember to stop by our Kelleys Island Branch!

Author Event: Joe Hurley Ten Million Steps on Route 6 Saturday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m. Joe Hurley, Author, presenter
Children’s Services took on a new look when the “Dive Into Reading” Early Literacy Center opened in the spring. This area is designed to capture the imaginations of children and parents, and provide a fun and effective way to develop early literacy skills.
In 1999, Joe came to the startling realization that he knew almost nothing about the other side of his home state, even though Connecticut is small. That year, photographer David Harple and Joe walked across Connecticut on Route 6 to give News-Times readers a better picture of their home state. He later realized that Route 6 is one of the few coast-to-coast highways, and so, after he retired, he and photographer Travis Lindhorst (in the comfort of a car) traveled the “ten millions steps on Route 6.”

With the passage of time, Sandusky’s restaurants and their menus have evolved to suit the modern palate. Take a look back at popular restaurants of days gone by and at what was on the menu.

Ohio Library Legislative Day & the Public Library Fund The Ohio Library Council hosted Library Legislative Day on April 28. Representatives from across the State gathered in Columbus to meet with their legislators on matters of importance to public libraries. Top on the agenda: Restore public library funding in Ohio. Library Legislative Day was planned to coincide with the State’s biennial budget process. Library constituents from across the State made their case for why Ohio citizens need their public libraries to receive a fair share of state funding. Namely, public libraries provide early literacy and workforce development opportunities and information resources to all Ohioans. Public libraries in Ohio depend on the Public Library Fund (PLF) to deliver essential library services. PLF has been cut substantially since 2008. In 2014, Ohio’s libraries received the same revenue from the State funding as they did eighteen (18) years ago in 1996. Adjusted for inflation the cut is even greater. Sandusky Library receives nearly half of its operating revenue from the State PLF. Local property taxes provide the other essential portion. The erosion of State funding in recent years has increased dependency on local tax levies. Additionally, tax reforms and the phase out of the Tangible Personal Property Tax (TPP) have kept Sandusky Library funding flat since 2009. Sandusky Library’s two main operating revenue sources are the State’s Public Library Fund and local property taxes. Both sources of revenue have been reduced significantly in recent years as a result of the State budget, tax reforms, and tax collections.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
Monday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m. David Swaldo, Sandusky Library, discussion leader At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State — and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce
Wednesday, July 29, at 6:00 p.m. John Montag, Retired, Nebraska Wesleyan University, discussion leader Not much ever happens to Harold Fry, a recent retiree who lives on the south coast of England. Then one day, he receives an unexpected letter which spurs him out of his chair. Queenie Hennessy, an old colleague, has written from a hospice to explain that she has cancer and has little time to live. Harold composes a brief, sympathetic letter, and sets out to mail it, by foot, in an 87 day journey of atonement and accepting the strangeness of others.
Participants may pick a recipe from the chosen cookbook(s) to bring and share. A discussion will follow the tasting. Please bring a copy of the recipe you choose. Stop by the Readers’ Advisory Desk to pick up a copy of the book(s). The pops program features upbeat and entertaining selections to engage listeners of all ages. Alison took an unusual path to becoming an internationally recognized banjoist. But she missed the bluegrass music she’d grown up playing in Southern California so much that when Alison Krauss called looking for a banjo player, she made the decision to leave her Wall Street career to pursue music. She then toured with Alison Krauss and Union Station and Michelle Shocked before forming her TICKETS ARE NOT REQUIRED. own group, The Alison Brown Quartet, in 1993. The quartet has toured throughout the US and abroad with stops at some of music’s most prestigious venues, including The Kennedy Center and numerous festivals.
