Winter/Spring 2018

Volume 26, Issue 1

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE: Sandusky Library rings in the new year with stories new and old. The Library continues work on its strategic plan, charting its course for the future. During the process, we reaffirmed our mission: Giving all people opportunities to enrich their lives. Thanks to community members for contributing through a survey and focus group session. We look forward to sharing more as plans develop. Sandusky Library will join the City of Sandusky’s Bicentennial celebration. Programming in 2018 will reflect the City’s rich history with the theme, One City, Many Stories: Celebrating Sandusky. Stay tuned as One City: Many Stories continues throughout the year.

National Library Week, celebrated April 8-14, 2018, will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event held in 1958. The American Library Association and the American Book Publishers formed the National Book Committee, a nonprofit citizens group, in 1954, out of concern that Americans were reading less based on research at the time. The National Book Committee developed the plan for National Library Week in an effort to motivate people to read more, and thus support libraries. The first National Library Week theme was Wake Up and Read! This year, libraries nationwide will celebrate the theme Libraries Lead! Molly Carver, Executive Director

LOCAL FOUNDATIONS SUPPORT LIBRARY INITIATIVES

Through generous grants from The Mylander Foundation and the Erie County Community Foundation, Sandusky Library will introduce several new programs in 2018.

ONE CITY, MANY STORIES: CELEBRATING SANDUSKY The Mylander Foundation

In honor of Sandusky’s Bicentennial the Library will celebrate throughout the year the theme One City: Many Stories: Celebrating Sandusky. Phase one of the grant program includes speakers on local and Ohio history, starting with our popular Brown Bag Lunch series. The next phase includes a two-part local history timeline exhibit to be unveiled during National Library Week in April. One will be a traveling exhibit, available for loan to other locations as a mobile history center and one will be displayed at the Library.

PARENTING PACKS The Mylander Foundation

The Library will add 11 Parenting Packs to the TOYbrary collection. Each pack centers around a specific theme, child development topic, or event occuring in the home and features books for children and their caregivers and toys that relate to the theme. Some of the themes include manners, a new baby in the family, and a hospital stay.
