Fall 2016

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE Congratulations to all of our summer readers! The Library experienced its highest participation in three years with 1,110 children and teens and 317 adults enrolled in the program. We hosted 99 summer events for 1,742 children, teens, and adults. Thank you for making this a banner year! We are pleased to announce that the Library has been selected by the State Library of Ohio to host an AmeriCorps Volunteer for a third year, September 2016-August 2017. The AmeriCorps volunteer will assist the public with technology use at the Library and in the community as part of the Guiding Ohio Online initiative. The Library will host Sandusky Reads: The Other Wes Moore in preparation for the author’s visit this fall. We look forward to having you join us for this community-wide reading event!

Sandusky Reads: The Other Wes Moore

Join us this October for Sandusky Reads: The Other Wes Moore. The Library is grateful for two grants received in support of this initiative: one from the Erie County Community Foundation and another from The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Erie County. Grant funding will pay for copies of Wes Moore’s books, which will be distributed to participating schools and community groups. Sandusky Reads coincides with the author’s public performance on November 2 (details on back), sponsored by The Norbert A. Lange and Marion Cleaveland Lange Trust. He will be speaking to the students of Sandusky High School and classes from Margaretta, Perkins, and St. Mary Central Catholic high schools at the Sandusky High School Auditorium the following day, which is also sponsored by The Lange Trust. Look for a postcard with program details in the mail soon!

Erie County Chamber Honors Norbert A. Lange

On Tuesday, May 3, the Erie County Chamber of Commerce posthumously named Norbert A. Lange to its Gallery of Achievers, Class of 2016. This honor is bestowed on individuals who have achieved high distinction in their chosen field. Selected honorees have made a significant impact on society and exhibit personal qualities that serve as an example to others. Representatives of Sandusky Library were present and accepted the Award on behalf of Mr. Lange for his gift of the Lange Trust, which has been administered by the Library for more than four decades. Mr. Lange’s Certificate of Award will be displayed at the Library. The Norbert A. and Marion Cleaveland Lange Trust of Sandusky Library was created by Dr. Lange in his Last Will and Testament. He died October 12, 1972. Mrs. Lange augmented the Trust under the provisions of a Living Trust that she established on October 10, 1974, which was implemented at the time of her death, December 23, 1975. In their own words as set forth in the Trust, the Library was to use the income from the Trust for “the promotion of cultural and educational enterprises in the City of Sandusky, Ohio, and the adjacent area within Erie County, Ohio. All such enterprises shall be open and free to, and for the cultural and educational benefit of the general public of said Erie County.” The best evidence of the fact that this laudable objective has been fulfilled is the popularity of the many programs and activities presented under the auspices of the Trust during the past 43 years. The people of Sandusky and Erie County are now and will be eternally indebted to the Langes for their generosity and kindness.
