DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

“Libraries Transform” was the message delivered to the general assembly in Columbus on Ohio Library Legislative Day, April 13. Library advocates met with Senator Randy Gardner and Representative Steve Arndt to tell the stories of how Erie County Libraries transform the lives of residents in their district. Examples of the statistics we shared can be found on our web site.

Transform your life at the Library. Please join us for “Kindness Week” in May. In support of Serving Our Seniors and its effort to create a Compassionate Community, the Library will host a series of programs during the week of May 16-22 that foster compassion and kindness.

Transform your summer at the Library. On Your Mark, Get Set . . . Read!, our summer reading program for children, will kick off on June 11 with Imagination Station’s Healthy Habitat Workshop on Wheels. Adults can get in the action, too, with Exercise Your Mind.

READ! All ages can sign up to earn tickets for prizes. Children who reach their reading goals receive a Library Superstar yard sign!

The latest one was installed recently in Perkins Township at Strickfaden Park. The Kiwanis Club of Sandusky (pictured above) will be the stewards who make sure it is stocked with books.

KICK-OFF EVENT: Imagination Station’s Healthy Habitat Workshop on Wheels!

Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Join us at the Library for our Summer Reading Program Kick-Off. The Healthy Habitat Workshop on Wheels’ focus is on healthy eating and exercise. Registration is required and limited to 30 children per session. You can also participate in other fun activities in the Children’s Services area.

Registration is required and begins Monday, June 6, for all ages. To register, visit our Registration Desk in Children’s Services (adults can also register at the Readers’ Advisory Desk).When you register, you will receive your Reading Log and a special prize. At this time you can also register for the Mighty Movers, Superstars, or Hi-Tech Tweens and Teens programs that begin June 13.

Children’s Summer Reading (birth-16 years)

Keep track of how much time you read (or listen to a book), and activities you do by recording them on your Reading Log. Receive one drawing ticket for each hour of reading (maximum 10 tickets) and for each activity completed (maximum 10 tickets).

Drawing tickets can be placed in whatever prize box you want for a chance to win. Bonus tickets can be earned for each program you attend. Bring your completed Reading Log to the Library for a yard sign. The Erie County libraries are building teams this summer to compete in a Regional Battle on Saturday, September 24. If you want to join Team Sandusky Library, plan to attend the Informational Meetings.

Practice sessions will be held before the Regional Battle.

Battle of the Books is a literary trivia competition for students entering grades 4-7, with all the questions derived from eight preselected books for tweens. For more information about joining Team Sandusky Library, call or stop by the Children’s Services Desk.

TAI CHI 101

Election Reflections Series “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.”

To coincide with the 2016 Presidential election year, we will be taking a look back at Presidential history, with a particular focus on Ohio and local history. This program series, made possible by a grant from the Mylander Foundation, kicked off in February and will run through Election Day.

Cathedrals Built by the Masons

Russell Herner, Author, presenter Here the the story and see illustrations of how the master builders and craftsmen designed and built European cathedrals. He will bring some of the tools that would have been used to build these buildings. In addition, he will sell his book for $40.

Genealogy Fair

Saturday, May 14, from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Get together with other family history researchers to show what you have learned about your ancestors and see what others have done, too. Share your research and “show off” the documents and other sources you have discovered. Tables will be available to display your records and research, with plenty of opportunity for individual and group discussions. Documents from the Library’s Special Collections will also be on exhibit, with Library staff to describe what you will see.

There is no one like the Doo-Wah Riders! For over 30 years they have possessed the rare combination of seasoned experience and youthful energy, fired by a love for what they do. They define their sound as “high energy country with a Cajun twist”. Their powerful arrangements of classic, contemporary, and original songs have made them favorites wherever they go.

The Doo-Wah Riders have appeared in concert with countless country stars, including Garth Brooks, George Strait, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Willie Nelson, and John Denver, to name only a few.

Also, the Doo-Wah Riders have served as a back-up band for Pam Tillis, Glen Campbell, Billy Ray Cyrus, and many other stars. They have appeared on TNN’s “Prime Time Country”. The Doo-Wahs have been featured entertainment at The Grammys, the Academy of Country Awards, festivals, and dozens of resorts and casinos.
