L E T T E R O F M OTIVATIO N A Brief Summary

With a rich and diverse histor y influenced by many different cultures, as a Taiwanese, it is often a complicated question to define one’s identity. However, in recent years, the importance of cultural identity slowly dawn on the young generation in Taiwan. Events like Sun Flower Student Movement, such grassroots movements revealed the social cohesion the young generation obtain. Since space and society are closely connected and inseparable, urban landscape plays an important role in delivering a space with collective memor y and shared value for the nation. I believe that cherishing histor y is to respect the trace that time have left behind. I’m especially interested in “memorial space”, which interpret the invisible human feelings. I’d like to work on a memorial space project in Taiwan, focusing on the unspoken histories that were once hidden and sensitive due to political manipulation, therefore, to create a memorial space toward transitional justice with tenderness. Cultural landscape preser vation is cr ucial to a sustainable human society, however, aside from the beauty of fine craftsmanship and natural landscape, there is a shared dilemma swaying

I would like to explore a way to deliver a mechanism that will bring the society to higher citizenship through the design process of open space and therefore hope to for m bottom-up community awareness for a sustainable urban landscape.

Settling in a liberal national with modern design, rich histor y and diverse culture, TU Delft has the top design training that values both practical application and academic theor y. It provides me a possibility of different perspective and critical distance. I believe that landscape architecture not only brings nature elements to human society but also merges cultural legacy with nature in har mony. Pos-
