DECONSTRUCTING THE WALL: A Prototype for Alternative Housing

Spring 2018: Graduate Thesis There are over 200 detention centers in operation, including federal and privately own.

This thesis is an exploration in Alternate housing, to address the social injustice of the treatment and living conditions of immigrants. Specifically, immigrants detained in detention centers and private facilities. Families, usually women and children, are placed in prison like conditions for long periods of time; these places are not suitable for children to live or experience. The purpose of this exploration is to create a better environment for families to be placed while waiting for the justice system.

Juan Juan and his mother fled El Salvador when he was 6 years old due to domestic abuse and gang violence. Upon reaching the border and asking for asylum, they were instead sent to a family detention center. They have been waiting for their case to be reviewed for the past 6 months.

Carlos Hildalgo Mr. Hildalgo has been living in The United States since he was a young boy and spent 11 months at Adelanto Detention Facility.

Jessica Colotl Jessica came to this country when she was 11 years old. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and college. Jessica has been in an immigration detention center for the past 9 months because of a minor traffic violation. www.aclu.org

Miguel Chavarria Miguel Chavarria lives in Connecticut with his wife Sandra. He is still fighting his immigration case. Miguel nearly lost his life in the immigration detention center. He was transferred from Massachusetts to the Etowah County Detention Facility in Alabama. Due to medical neglect at this facility, he suffered a massive heart attack that led to kidney failure.

PROPOSED SITE AND CONCEPT Further research led to Bastoy, Norway where an island is fully occupied by inmates. However it is far from a normal prison, situated of the coast, inmates live in cottages, attend workshops and care for the island. Paving the idea that humans do not belong in cage, instead nature is the main tool for rehabilitation. Bastoy Prison has proven that most inmates go back into society as reformed inmates and contribute to society in a positive way. In our history we have Ellis and Angel Island, that were initially used to welcome and process immigrants. Although these are no longer in service, the concept to have a place that can be welcoming and useful is not far fetch. The Proposed site is located off the coast of Maryland. Poplar island is an existing island that is built up by dredged material from the Chesapeake Bay. With the premise that one day, it would become a recreational destination. This island is the proposed site for a conceptual alternative housing to detention centers. Bastoy, Norway

community atmosphere and places for social engagement.

A Place to Heal: Poplar Island was chosen as the site for redevelopment for a proposal of a community of detainees. Of the 1,800 acres available, 27 acres was developed. This particular area was chosen for its close proximity to the existing boat access channel. It also created the opportunity to add barrier islands to the east to provide flood mitigation and ease the force of tidal waves entering the harbor. Following Bastoy Prison, Norway, the premise is to create ac community for migrants using restorative justice for low risk migrants. Most migrants were forced to leave their country of origin and suffer emotional trauma. Poplar Island would serve as a place for healing for those residing on the island.

Pathway: Journey to healing

Upon arrival at the dock, residents would be welcomed and would journey up a meandering path of healing where they would get a glimpse of the cottages through the allee of trees. The journey allows views towards the barrier/habitat island, terraced wetlands and recreational ares. Living clusters surround a central courtyard, where each neighborhood houses a small community hub. These small clusters of neighborhoods are part of a larger plan that includes a community center, library, small school, medical building, and training programs. COMMUNITIES

A MIXED SALAD: EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF RACE AND INCOME IN COLUMBIA, MD. James W. Rouse dreamed of creating a racially diverse “garden for the growing city”. Columbia’s village neighborhoods are culturally diverse in race and income. With income ranging from $50,000 and under, $100,000, $150,000, $200,000, $250,000. Each dot represents 2000 people of different races (White, African American, Asian, and Hispanic) and are evenly distributed throughout Columbia.
