#TheSalonNY
Welcome At a dinner party this year, two gallery owners—one fine art and the other collectable design— got into a rather heated discussion about the nature of fairs. The design dealer was angry that his gallery is prohibited from exhibiting in major art fairs, the art dealer resented that she couldn’t show design material at those same fairs. Obviously, Salon welcomes both. We know that people who collect great art aren’t viewing it from an IKEA chair. Equally, the collectors of important 20th and 21st century design put art on their walls. The first edition of Salon, while not evenly divided between art and design, included art as we do today even though Salon is known primarily as a design fair. We believe that the distinctions between art and design have become deeply blurred. We’re talking about how people live and visions for their homes and it seems somewhat beside the point. In this eighth edition of Salon, as always, we’ve tweaked a few things. We’re extremely pleased to be welcoming new galleries from Moscow, São Paulo and Barcelona. The inclusion of Russian and Latin American art and design enhances the range of material to be presented. We’re also pleased to welcome exceptional partners who have created site-specific installations in the historic rooms of the Armory. We hope you enjoy all of it. Jill Jill Bokor Executive Director

Located in the Colonel’s Room, Park Avenue Armory, New York, Mathieu Lehanneur’s “Soldier’s Retreat” is inspired by the history of the monument. The designer imagined a mental and physical refuge for a soldier. “I wanted to create a space absolutely isolated from the turmoil of the world. A place where time is suspended, an Eden’s Garden. Like a peace found after the battlefields.” Mathieu Lehanneur A vast, cloud-shaped couch (Familyscape), a generous and floating-looking armchair that combines leather and carbon (Elephant), a green marble console, carved as a contemporary reinterpretation of antiquity (Pillars), or an incredible cabinet in marble and metal marquetry (Check Bar). Each piece offers a sense of power and lightness. “Soldier’s Retreat” is a timeless place where natural history merges with the history of humanity. Mathieu Lehanneur also presents his collection “Inverted Gravity.” True visual poetry and technical prowess, these pieces made of marble and blown glass defy the laws of physics and place objects in weightlessness.

Apparatus is a Manhattan based design studio that explores lighting, furniture, and objects in immersive environments, interpreting the historical and the cultural through a modern lens. Drawing on a vocabulary of desire, Creative Director Gabriel Hendifar constructs the studio’s work in narratives. The studio is an ever-evolving articulation of considered spaces and the things that live within them, inspired by the modernist principle of Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art.
Lalique partners with wall covering atelier Fromental to create an installation celebrating the iconic motifs of the French heritage brand. Walls will be lined with varying themes, each telling a story leading the visitor through fountains to a laurel grove decorated with Lalique Bacchantes figures. The concept is lush, bright and heavily influenced by the three F’s; that define Lalique’s brand: femme flora, and fauna. The installation includes classic Lalique creations and introduces a new lighting collection a collaboration with the renowned designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The installation includes the US debut of a “Hirondelles” wallpaper, a handcrafted silk, expertly hand painted and finely embroidered by Fromental’s master craftspeople, cleverly incorporating Lalique crystal.
At the forefront of the international design scene, Mathieu Lehanneur is one of the few designers of his generation with a genuine multi-dimensional approach to creativity. His projects stretch the realms of product design, objects, architecture, craft and technology. He thrives on creating spectacular projects that are intended to enchant and promote wellness. His work defies traditional descriptions of “design,” “science,” and “art.”
Frank Pollaro creates hand-made customer furniture for residence, super yachts, corporate suites, boutique hotels, and retail interiors. For over 30 years, Pollaro has served the most renowned firms in the global design, art and architecture community. His work is produced in his own workshops, with all operations at one location in New Jersey. Each piece is made entirely by hand with minute attention to detail. The work is guided by a single philosophy: to elevate furniture to become art that is soulful, immaculately designed, celebrating extraordinary materials.

Lead Partners Created by the 7th generation Master Blender Yann Fillioux in 2011, Hennessy Paradis Imperial exemplifies the art of selection, maturation and blending. Only 10 out of 10,000 eaux de-vie of any given vintage are eligible to become part of this blend. Hennessy Paradis Imperial defies preconceptions about aged cognacs—the golden hue of the cognac is surprising and unprecedented for eaux-de-vie of this age. On the nose, floral freshness of jasmine and orange blossom blend with the subtle herbal notes. Hennessy Paradis Imperial ultimately made of precision.

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage champagnes are aged wines of distinguished character and represent Cellar Master Benoit Gouez’s individual creation and personal interpretation of a vintage year. Every Grand Vintage wine is original, created from a selection of a single year’s most remarkable wines, and with respect for the individuality of each vintage. The wines are a blend based on the Cellar Master’s subjective and emotional assessment of the personality and potential of each grape variety. A bold example of Moët’s winemaking excellence and savoir-faire, the 2012 Grand Vintage makers the House’s 74th vintage wine since the first release in 1842, and has been aged for 5 years in the House’s historic Grand Vintage Reserve cellars in Epernay for more refined maturity.

Salon Conversation Collecting Fine Jewelry in a Sustainable World Field and Staff Room, 1pm A conversation around jewelry collecting in the 21st century and beyond. Currently, many collectors are holding items such as ivory and coral that are shunned in the market. The extraction of these materials is not sustainable and harms our environment; therefore, they are not in high demand. The future of jewelry collecting is sustainable, natural, nonsynthetic, ethereal, and respectful both to the environment and the people sourcing it. This conversation brings together like-minded fine jewelry professionals, who can act as a concrete resource to collectors looking for guidance in the art of collecting jewelry. As insiders in this field our goal is to promote the best artisanal practices this industry has to offer.

Pollaro's core belief is that the materials are sacred and, when combined with perfect craftsmanship, can elevate the piece to the level of art. The workshop contains the largest and finest privately-owned collection of unique woods. Frank Pollaro personally selects every log, and approves less than 1% of what is viewed every year. This is the most stringently curated inventory found anywhere in the world. The Lignum Theatrum, or wood theater, presents these materials in a dramatic showcase, displaying some of the oldest and most spectacular specimens available. In the face of unprecedented attacks on our mission and the communities we serve, Planned Parenthood continues to provide high quality, confidential sexual and reproductive health care to all New Yorkers, no matter what. And because of supporters like you, we’ve been inspired to think bigger: on January 1, 2020, PPNYC is merging with four NY State affiliates to become Planned Parenthood of Greater New York (PPGNY). This will amplify our work and radically transform the landscape of sexual and reproductive healthcare. Together we will keep our wide range of services available to everyone and ensure NY is a safe haven for all who turn to us!
Very special thanks to our generous donors for underwriting the November 15th cocktail party to benefit Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and Planned Parenthood of New York City:
