Welcome to Salon!

As the new Executive Director, I am thrilled to have you join us for this year’s fair, where creativity and community come together in celebration of art and design. Whether you are a visitor to the fair, exhibitor, partner or contributor, you are part of our family, and we value your presence.

This year marks our 13th edition, and I am excited to welcome some wonderful new exhibitors showcasing vintage and contemporary collectible design and fine art. Additionally, this is our second year featuring dedicated jewelry exhibitors, further expanding the diversity of offerings at the fair.

Education is at the heart of Salon, and we have curated an inspiring lineup of panel discussions that will delve into important topics and trends shaping the art and design landscape today. These conversations are designed to inform and inspire, providing valuable insights for all.

We are also proud to collaborate with influential partners in the design space to highlight the work of underrepresented artists and makers. Their voices and visions are vital to our artistic community, and we are committed to providing a platform to showcase their talents.

In line with our ongoing dedication to innovation, you may notice some subtle additions to the fair this year, reflecting our core initiatives—education, diversity, and community—which continue to guide our efforts as we strive to create a space where all feel welcome and inspired. In addition to the invaluable support of our longstanding Honorary Committee, we introduced our new Design & Art Advisory Council, composed of some of the world’s leading interior designers and art advisors who have been lovers of the fair. The contributions from both our Committee and Council members have been invaluable, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and support.

Furthermore, we’ve expanded our collectors program and introduced a new VIP program, both designed to enhance your experience and help you make valuable connections during the fair and beyond. If you are interested in finding out more about these programs please visit our website to apply.

Although I have been involved with Salon for nearly a decade, this year’s fair holds special significance as it marks my first as Executive Director. With that, I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this event to life.

To the Salon/SLSA team—Jennifer Stark, Emillia Vincent, Mary Payne, Percy Stogdon, Jad Abutayeh, Joshua Herrington, and Veronica Wilt—thank you for your constant support and for helping realize my vision.

To our PR team, Andrey Furmanovich and Melissa Olster—for continuously sharing the fair’s magic with the world. To our talented graphic designer, Connor Cowden—for helping us create such a stunning visual identity this year.

To our security team, Dale Davis, Gregory Santangelo, and Chris Davis, for always ensuring we are all safe—your attention to detail never goes unnoticed. To the “blue shirts,” thank you for jumping in whenever needed and handling every task, big or small. And to our carpenters, electricians, teamsters and traffic management team — building and maintaining an event of this scale is no easy feat, yet you consistently get the job done no matter how difficult it can be.

Lastly, to Jill Bokor—your mentorship, support, and belief in me means everything. I hope to carry on your legacy with the same grace and heart you’ve always shown.

And to all of you, thank you for being a part of Salon, and for supporting the incredible artists and makers who inspire us all.

Founder and Chairman, Sanford L. Smith + Associates

July 22, 1939—May 25, 2024

Sandy’s story is well known. A Brooklyn boy who wanted to be a theatrical producer, inherited a prosperous funeral business in which he had little interest; “I was never an undertaker” he used to proclaim. In the early 70’s Sandy and his first wife, Patty, went from flea market to flea market, buying all sorts of Americana and salting it away. After a couple of years, they decided to try the then renowned weekly 26th Street Antiques Market in Chelsea. During their first weekend, they netted $50 and Sandy was hooked.

Having exhibited in a couple of local antiques fairs, Sandy thought that he could provide better management than existed at the time and so The Fall Antiques Show at the Pier was born. Not only was it Sandy’s first fair, or show, as he always called them, it was the first all Americana fair and it included formal brown furniture, country furniture, ceramics, scrimshaw, glass, weather vanes, and other American decorative arts. Of course, it was a smash and the rest is history.

In the ensuing years, he created New York based shows Modernism, Works on Paper, Art20, The Outsider Art Fair, and Salon Art + Design. At his peak, he also managed fairs in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, and Princeton. However, the venue for most of his events was Park Avenue Armory, which was Sandy’s spiritual home. Originally a military facility, in 2006 it was acquired by and, over-time, meticulously renovated by the Seventh Regiment Armory Conservancy to become one of New York’s premier cultural destinations. It’s almost impossible to walk into the Armory without thinking of Sandy. And all of us will remember him sitting on a stool at the front of a show, taking the tickets and counting the gate.

Was Sandy always easy? No. But he was a straight shooter, proud always to say that his word was his bond. After 9/11, when he had to cancel his fall events, he was the only fair producer who returned all of the deposits to his dealers. They never forgot it.

At his core, Sandy was a family man and couldn’t have been prouder of his sons, Colin, Jared, and Ian Smith (from his first wife Patty) and Luc Bokor-Smith (with me). He never stopped talking about “the boys” and his five grandchildren, Isaiah, Shayla, Jasper, Wyatt and Inigo.

Of the many accolades accorded him, he most loved being called an impresario. The kid from Brooklyn realized his dream. He was the quintessential producer.

Creative Synergies: Blurring the Boundaries Between Design, Jewelry, and Art

Saturday, November 9 at 12 p.m.

Join 1stDibs Editorial Director Anthony Barzilay Freund for a dynamic conversation with trailblazing and multidisciplinary artist Michele Oka Doner, and influential art advisor Allan Schwartzman. This panel will explore the fluid relationships between design, jewelry, and art, examining how creativity transcends traditional boundaries. Oka Doner, celebrated for her powerful, nature-inspired sculptures and installations, will discuss how her past works have inspired her latest jewelry collection, exploring the interplay between vast and intimate scales. The discussion with Schwartzman will delve into the synergies between these art forms, the creative process that bridges them, and the evolution of Oka Doner’s artistic vision. Through this dialogue, they will explore how innovation and inspiration can flow seamlessly across disciplines to create timeless works of art. Presented by 1stDibs.

ALCHEMY: The Art & Collectability of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne

Saturday, November 9 at 3 p.m.

Join New York magazine’s Wendy Goodman along with author & gallerist Evan Lobel, actress Julianne Moore and interior designer David Kleinberg as they discuss the astonishing breadth of work and lasting impact this father and son artist team has earned at the forefront of 20th-century art, design and collecting. For the first time, Lobel reveals, in a comprehensive book ten years in the making, the importance of the LaVerne’s decades-long collaborative process resulting in hundreds of unique and complex works, some engraved with historical references of past civilizations, some in cast bronze, and some hand-welded.

David Kleinberg was an early supporter of Lobel Modern after Evan Lobel’s decision to leave finance and open his showroom in the late nineties and the two have since collaborated to curate works for Kleinberg’s discerning clients, ranging from avant garde furniture to sculpture and painting. Julianne Moore, an accomplished artist in many fields, was also an early supporter of Lobel Modern and her own artful interiors have been published to great acclaim. With Goodman, the trio will explore the LaVerne’s unique artistic approach and artisan processes, drawing out what makes their body of work so coveted by collectors.

What is ‘Collectible’ in Collectible Design?

Sunday, November 10 at 12 p.m.

With the increasing presence of design in today’s culture, collectible 20th century and contemporary design has become one of the most exciting, dynamic, and influential areas, dominating global interior design. Yet, the term has been frequently misused and distorted to give objects which are not collectible that allure. In this talk, design connoisseur Daniella Ohad and her guests, Robert Kaplan, Founder of the Robert Kaplan Collection; Michael Jefferson, a collector and advisor; Mark McDonald, a collector and gallerist; and Jeffrey Graetsch, Founder of Raisonné Gallery, will investigate what is really collectible in collectible design.

Interiors and the Passage of Time

Sunday, November 10 at 3 p.m.

Adam Charlap Hyman, designer and co-founder of Charlap Hyman & Herrero, and Elena Clavarino, Senior Editor at AIR MAIL, in conversation about Interiors and the Passage of Time. The two will discuss how to keep the passage of time in mind when first designing your home; how to avoid buying into trends; how to leave room for growth in your home; how to update your home throughout the years; how to identify evergreen pieces; and more.

Presented by AIR MAIL.

Maison Rapin | A5

True to its modern baroque style, Maison Rapin presents an atypical mix of historical creations from the 20th century and exclusive contemporary works. Here the eras collide, creating an original universe. The works of major 20th century artists such as Robert Goossens, faithful craftsman to Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, and goldsmith

Jean Després rub shoulders with the contemporary “jewel furniture” of KAM TIN.

NATUZZI ITALIA | COLLECTORS LOUNGE

Natuzzi Italia - an Italian furniture company founded in 1959 by Pasquale Natuzzi - is designing the Collectors Lounge at Salon Art + Design, a space for Collector-level ticket holders to relax and socialize during the fair. Natuzzi Italia’s design will be comprised of pieces from various collections and collaborations including:

• Uragano: A sculptural table, in which the highest expression of Made-in-Italy craftsmanship is manifested. Made in a limited edition, Uragano pays tribute to the beauty and richness of the nature of the Apulian territory, a southern region in Italy.

• Tempio: Their Tempio coffee table designed by commands attention, exuding grandeur and elegance like a precious sculptural piece. In 2024, the Tempio collection expanded with new organic forms and finishes.

• Memoria: Designed by Karim Rashid, the Memoria sofa reinterprets the enveloping and generous lines that have long defined Natuzzi’s design history. Rashid envisions a sofa as an ode to Mediterranean warmth and hospitality. Memoria, a modular sofa, captures the essence of Apulian culture—hospitality and togetherness—through its organic shapes and sinuous lines, reminiscent of the region’s soft, rolling hills.

STUDIO GIANCARLO VALLE | MINIATURES

Studio Giancarlo Valle is an award-winning international design practice dedicated to creating spaces that are playful, studied and unexpected. The studio’s holistic approach encompasses architecture, interiors and the decorative arts, across residential and commercial disciplines, from thoughtful refinement to total reimagination. The studio’s furniture collection is showcased in their immersive gallery space, Casa Valle, and has additionally been presented with Magen Gallery, New York City; Seventh House, Los Angeles; and at Salone del Mobile with Rossana Orlandi.

The studio creates highly detailed maquettes of all its projects, down to its own custom pieces. These handmade miniatures, arranged and rearranged, function as a living sketchbook, an elastic analog of the studio’s way of thinking. They allow for a sense of playfulness and human gesture.

For the 13th Edition of Salon Art + Design, Studio Giancarlo Valle will unveil a site-specific miniatures installation, highlighting these dollhouse-like maquettes—a handmade clay sofa, a 3D- printed table, a detailed model of the dining pavilion for a villa recently completed in St. Barts. The result is a lens into Valle’s world—at one’s fingertips.
