WELCOME
Design aficionados are always curious to hear about the latest trends. Asked frequently if The Salon is a bellwether, it occurs to me to say that The Salon Art + Design both reflects and predicts the currently and imminently trend worthy. That The Salon boasts the best material in the world is due to our 57 extraordinary exhibitors—each unparalleled in their fields. This year we welcome two leading dealers in ancient art, which preordained all things to come. Moving swiftly through millennia, the next stop is a quick glimpse of early 19th century wallpaper paired with Oceanic material. The tour of the 20th century begins with a jaw-dropping chandelier attributed to Koloman Moser. The breadth and depth of twentieth century art and design continues, not missing a movement or genre from Deco to International Mid-century to the mischievous iconoclasm of the ‘80’s and 90’s. Among so many extraordinary installations, there’s a complete Frank Lloyd Wright installation, never before presented to the public. The contemporary design is a comprehensive view of the best work from the beginning of the 21st Century through this moment. Each year our purview becomes more inclusive; we welcome our first South African gallery, bringing a breathtaking exhibition of artists not previously seen in New York. The Salon is a labor of love for our unbelievable team. George Tsaoussis-Gouveia, our Director of Operations, has been with The Salon since its beginning and is responsible for the construction and design of 57 booths. Jennifer Stark, our Director of Marketing, creates the website, so often visited, along with all matter of collateral and branding. Nicky Dessources, our Director of Client Services, facilitates the needs of 57 galleries—no easy feat—and acts as our institutional memory from year to year. Arlette Landestoy runs the show office, Wendy Buckley seamlessly manages our sponsors and programming partners, and Marialuisa Monda, works on social media and the Salon’s messaging. Finally, Sanford Smith, who founded this business and had the vision 40 years ago to understand that the public’s hunger for collectible art and design would only grow stronger. From all of us to all of you, enjoy The Salon! Jill Bokor Executive Director

AT THE SALON
Azucena, The Colonel’s Room. Founded in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella, and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, renowned Italian brand Azucena, combines formal elegance, understated luxury and pure design, all manufactured to the highest standards. Azucena offers a range of iconic pieces such as the “Catilina” chair, known for marrying various refined materials, reworked into traditional stylistic forms. B&B Italia acquired the historic brand in 2018 intending to preserve it as part of Italy’s rich heritage relaunching a series of “modern classics” designed by architect and original founder, Luigi Caccia Dominioni from the late 1940s and onwards. The collection includes chairs, sofas, tables, and lamps that represent ‘Made in Italy’ design which has returned as a showcase of style and quality.
Callidus Guild and Jeff Lincoln Art + Design, Applied Arts Partner, The Library. Creative Director artist Yolande Batteau has prepared a site-specific installation of her work for the fair. Batteau’s installation in the Historic Library at The Armory—designed by Louis C. Tiffany, Associated Artists with Stanford White—consists of a series of stelae built as towering plaster and canvas monoliths. Draped, collapsing, soft and amorphous, they serve as rigorous experiments rooted in material culture both ancient and modern. Surfaces are encrusted and embellished in metals, stone and tooled marble dust plaster and play against the formality of the space’s wood vitrines and stained-glass windows. Like carved marble worn by time and touch, the sculptures serve Batteau’s continued investigation into art for architecture. Gallery partner Jeff Lincoln Art + Design curates collectible and historical design elements that reinforce and expand upon the notion of tactility and organic movement in contemporary design inherent in Batteau’s work and installation. The gallery’s program examines the ongoing intersection of collectible design and contemporary art for collectors seeking a unique vision. New work by renowned glass artist John Pomp to master ceramic artist Lee Hun Chung, among others, provide a narrative that sharpens and contextualizes the meaning of materiality and form in contemporary design. Maison Goyard, Entrance to Exhibitor Floor. Maison Goyard presents an exclusive installation on the theme of “In Praise of Slowness,” inspired by a famous Haiku by the legendary Japanese poet Kobayashi that celebrates the virtue of taking things slow, and the great achievements this approach to life can bring. A playful, oneiric and poetic metaphor for slowness as the ultimate indulgence and the epitome of luxury, the “In Praise of Slowness” installation reveals a most unlikely star: a snail pulling a net of Goyard trunks. A nod to the Goyard family history—the origin of the Goyards is Burgundy, a region renowned for its vineyards and gastronomy, and in particular the notorious Les escargots de Bourgogne, a delicacy consisting of land snails cooked in garlic butter. This tongue-in-cheek “mise-en-scène” also highlights the unparalleled skills of the Goyard trunk makers, who have taken their time to master the art of crafting exceptionally light and easy to handle trunks and luggage, despite their seemingly grand appearance. Ever since its establishment in 1853, Maison Goyard’s artisans have worked tirelessly to create and perfect their recipe for the classic trunk. Today, the very same ancestral techniques and methods are still used to ensure unparalleled quality and timeless elegance.

In Memoriam: Barry Harwood, PhD I was fortunate to know Barry for over 40 years. Although he is best known as a curator, he participated in two of my early shows: The Fall Antiques Show at The Pier and Modernism—A Century of Style and Design. At the time he specialized in bentwood furniture and was the first and most prominent dealer of Thonet in this country. Barry was truly one of the great scholars of furniture and design of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Having spent lots of time in his youth prowling around museums, it was no surprise that he spent most of his career as a curator, teacher, and author. As the curator of decorative arts at the Brooklyn Museum, he produced such wide- ranging exhibitions of: The Furniture of George Hunzinger, The Modernist Jewelry of Art Smith, Invention and Innovation in Nineteenth Century America and Tiffany glass. As a teacher and author he was generous in his knowledge. Students in The Cooper Hewitt/Parson’s master’s program were the recipients of his vast knowledge and entertaining teaching. Barry was a unique and talented individual whose personality never failed to entertain. We will miss him.
