The season begins with an overwhelming musical and theatrical experience: opera’s grandest version of the Faust story—an emotionally thrilling, philosophically rich retelling that features a witches’ Sabbath, angelic choruses of cherubs, and the most vivid portrait of the Devil in the entire musical repertoire.

SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRODUCTION

Music Director Nicola Luisotti leads Boito’s monumental work of “choral grandeur and melodic richness” (The New York Times) with a superb cast: Ildar Abdrazakov, “a singer of elegance and refinement” (Washington Post) with “a dark, powerful sound” (Chicago Tribune), Patricia Racette, an “honest, intelligent and expressive singer” (The New York Times) and Ramón Vargas, a tenor with “a clear, big voice” (Toronto Star).

GIUSEPPE VERDI

Warmth, wit and wisdom abound in Verdi’s autumnal masterpiece, a tale of a foolish old man who enjoys a good prank—even when he is the target. Based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV, this delightful comedy is led by Music Director Nicola Luisotti and stars internationally renowned baritone Bryn Terfel, whose celebrated portrayal of the title character “commands the stage … making him the kind of irascible charmer you’d like to have a beer with” (The New York Times). TheBarber Gioachino Rossini

o Seville

Bubbling with charm and bursting with beguiling melodies, Rossini’s eternally fresh comic masterpiece, in which love (with the help of a cunning barber) conquers all, returns with two charismatic casts. Resident Conductor Giuseppe Finzi, who leads the San Francisco Opera Orchestra with “vigor and clarity” (San Francisco Chronicle), is at the podium.

New Production

One cast features the “lively” Isabel Leonard with “a radiant lyric voice” (The New York Times); Lucas Meachem, who displayed “vocal brilliance” and “theatrical panache” as Don Giovanni (2011) (San Francisco Chronicle); and Javier Camarena, praised by Opera News for his “exquisite finesse.” The other cast features Daniela Mack, who sings Rossini “with technical command and expressive ease” (Opera News); the “smooth-voiced” Audun Iversen (The New York Times) and Alek Shrader, whose “bright singing” is matched with “matinee-idol good looks” (The New York Times).

TheFlyingDutchman Richard Wagner

A condemned ship captain navigates the world’s seas in search of true love in Wagner’s hypnotic, achingly resonant tale. Patrick Summers, beloved by San Francisco audiences for his “eloquent musical leadership” (San Francisco Chronicle), will conduct an impressive cast of renowned Wagnerians led by Greer Grimsley, a “thunderous” (San Francisco Chronicle) bass-baritone with “a sumptuously beautiful voice, smooth as silk, precise of text” (Opera News). The new production is by Petrika Ionesco, memorable for the “handsome combination of grandeur and expressive intimacy” (San Francisco Chronicle) he brought to Cyrano de Bergerac (2010). ShowBoat

Music by Jerome Kern · Book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Based on the novel Show Boat by Edna Ferber

A classic of American musical theater receives the operatic treatment it so richly deserves. Edna Ferber’s tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism. COMPANY PREMIERE

Francesca Zambello’s magnificent production brings to life the expansive saga in which “one memorable song follows another, each an enduring thread in the fabric of American popular culture—from ‘Ol’ Man River’ to ‘Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man’ to ‘Make Believe’ to ‘You Are Love’” (Chicago Tribune).

AILYN PÉREZ STEPHEN COSTELLO

La Traviata Giuseppe Verdi

Violetta Valéry may be the most heart-wrenching character in all of opera: A high-spirited but deceptively delicate woman who unexpectedly finds, and then selflessly gives up, the love of her all-too-short life. Two casts bring this tragic tale to life: June features Sonya Yoncheva, who sings with a “superbly florid coloratura” (Opera Britannia) and Saimir Pirgu, who performed the role with “shattering emotional power” (Financial Times). The July cast is led by Ailyn Pérez, whose performance of the role was hailed as “an unalloyed triumph” (The Guardian, London) and Stephen Costello, “an ascending voice in opera” (Philadelphia Inquirer).
