On March 21st 2017, AirAsia X Indonesia just announced a new direct flight route from Bali to Narita airport of Tokyo, Japan. The opening of this new route follows up after the agreement letter issued by Indonesia’s Ministry of transportation which was accepted on March 16th 2017, as well as the same letter from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism a day after. AirAsia X will fly directly from Ngurah Rai International Airport Denpasar to Narita International Airport Tokyo from May 24th 2017 with 4 days a week flight schedules. This route will be served by brand new Airbus A330-300 plane with capacity of 377 seats, including 12-premium flatbed seats unit, which has been awarded as the ‘best seat in the world’ for low-fare flight category. DODDY OBENK AND FRIENDS PRESENT “SATYAN SITA”; A PHOTO AND VIDEO EXHIBITION OF BALINESE CULTURE On April 22nd, 2017, the “Satyan Sita” Photo and Video Exhibition opened for public viewing. Inspired by the immense strength and energy of the people from Tejakula in the preservation of their tradition and culture in its pure, sacred form, a group of artists decided to create an art exhibition dedicated to the dance form which only survives in a few places in Bali. The exhibition documents this sacred art form, and consists of art, photographs and video capturing images of the people, their masks and their dance during religious ceremonies and dance performances. Artists participating in the exhibition include: Doddy Obenk, Tjandra Hutama, Jelena Vuksanovic, Kass Sudrajat and Stefanus Bayu. During the day the Wayang Wong dance group from Tejakula will be performing the “Satyan Sita”; one of the stories from the epic drama of Ramayana. The event is being held in the Rumah Topeng dan Wayang Setia Darma (The House of Puppets and Masks) and will be open for visitors until May 22nd 2017.

If you feel like relaxing on the beach, there is a beach club just minutes away, by foot or buggy, from the main resort. Featuring a 41-metre lap pool, the beach club is set on the volcanic- sand beach with eight lounging bales and offers Indonesian and light western dishes during lunchtime. You can dine wherever you like, Amankila has 2 restaurants: the main restaurant which is popular for breakfast and dinner, and a more casual terrace for lunch. I opted to have my

lunch in one of the bales in the pool area. During my visit the standard of cuisine was a real high point of my stay. The chef has creatively crafted some delicious Indonesian dishes based on traditional recipes such as the ayam taliwang and gulai ikan both of which are beautifully presented without sacrificing the authenticity of the original dish. While at the resort, I pampered myself with an excellent one-hour tailored treatment in the spa pavilion. A rejuvenating treatment applied by an attentitive skilled therapist we started with a 30-minute Aman signature massage which was then augmented by a 30-minute scrub using sea salt and lavender oil.

This is the 4th Aman property I have had the pleasure to experience and my stay at Amankila was nothing short of wonderful. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Mt Agung, Baliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sacred mountain, enveloped by lush vegetation and overlooking the Lombok Strait, the resort is a truly beautiful place to stay. That unique Aman atmosphere which is so hard to find in other resorts has, once again, won my heart. Outstanding service, a view to die for, and the friendly and attentive staff are just a few of the things that stood out for me. The small details also make a difference and before leaving, as usual, a luggage tag in blue leather with my name on it, was attached to my bag and a blessed Balinese string bracelet was tied to my wrist. A delightful end to a magical stay but, as always, too short and it is always hard to leave a resort that makes you feel that you have visited the home of a dear friend rather than staying in a hotel. was given the chance to experience Borneo through the annual Borneo Ultra-Trail Marathon, an event that filled me with anticipation, exhilaration and fulfilment.

After bidding my lovely wife goodbye for the hundredth time, I set off for Borneo armed with only my racing gear, my photography equipment and a sense of excitement. Flying with AirAsia, one of Asia’s best low-cost carriers, my trip to Kota Kinabalu took me about 2 hours 30 minutes As a great believer in cultural immersion, I always stay at hotels or resorts that reflect the rich culture and heritage of the country I am visiting and so, for this trip, I chose Gaya Island Resort to be my temporary home for the next three days. Gaya Island Resort is located on Pulau Gaya, the largest of a cluster of five islands that form the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a nature conservation area on the Northern coast of Borneo, close to Kota Kinabalu.

Visitors paddle up narrow inlets at high tide to see the protected mangroves in their natural habitat and learn how different species of these trees are able to adapt and live in the salty or brackish water further inland.

First, a bit of luxury, I set off to sample the lunch menu at the resort’s Pool Bar & Lounge – an al fresco-style bar that overlooks a tranquil infinity pool with floating cabanas.

It was late afternoon when I got back to the resort and, with some time to spare before dinner, it was time to sample the treatments offered at the Gaya resort’s Spa Village to relax my body and revitalise my spirit.

Lunch over, I thought I’d take a mangrove kayak tour to better understand the mangrove ecosystem and the resort’s conservation work with an in-depth explanation from the resident naturalist.

The Indigenous Massage – also known as Urutan Pribumi – is an 80-minute treatment that brings together age-old healing traditions from multiple tribes with Spa Village’s signature blend of Island Spice aromatic oils to improve circulation. I ended what had been a wonderful day with a hint of Japanese in the ‘Land Beneath the Wind’ as Sabah is known, a scrumptious dinner at Omakase – a two-storey Japanese restaurant surrounded by an ancient rainforest and perched on a hillside with a stunning view of Malohom Bay and the imposing Mount Kinabalu. The following day over lunch I sat talking to the resort’s resident naturalist who explained about the Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre and its inspiring conservation work. Spreading my culture vulture wings after lunch, I decided to dabble in some Borneo traditional handicraft to test my creative skills. There are over 32 ethnic groups in Sabah each with their own unique handicrafts which reflect their traditions, cultural identity and history. There is the brightly hued beadwork of the Rungus while the Kadazandusun are noted for their weaving using plant fibres. Visitors are taught to create their own handicraft memento so they can take a piece of Borneo home with them.

It was a tough day, and the next morning I was feeling the pain. As I opened my eyes to take in my surroundings, my legs were aching, and it was excruciating for me to get out of bed, but the feeling of achievement made it all worthwhile. On my itinerary for the day was a visit to Weston Wetland Park – one of the large river mouth wetlands in North Borneo. The park is approximately 2 hours’ drive away from Kota Kinabalu and is home to rare proboscis monkeys, fireflies, flying foxes, wild pitcher plants and other exotic wildlife (there is even a floating village), it really is a must-see place for nature lovers.

I made a bracelet as a homecoming gift for my wife, a ‘one of a kind’ piece made by my own fair hands and encapsulating the sentimental value of a special time in my life, a gift with true meaning and, to me, a priceless treasure. It was my last day on the island, and I finished it off with a delicious dinner at Fisherman’s Cove – a quaint restaurant situated on a rooftop with a breath-taking view of Mount Kinabalu. The restaurant features a symphony of their own seafood-themed dishes. The day of the Borneo Ultra-Trail Marathon finally arrived. For the uninitiated, this is an extreme, outdoor event that takes runners through a combination of native jungle and cultivated landscapes on trails, dirt tracks and back-roads of the Kiulu Valley North of Kota Kinabalu.

To see the wildlife up close you can opt to go for a river cruise up the Nabahan & Siudan rivers. But, as the time for my river cruise crept nearer, the skies opened, and it started to rain heavily, effectively stranding those waiting for the cruise at the dock. Even with a canopy on the boat, cruises can only be conducted in fair weather conditions. The unrelenting weather eventually won, disappointed I gave up and headed back to my accommodation in Kota Kinabalu to prepare for scaling Mount Kinabalu the following day. Climbing Mount Kinabalu is not a feat to be achieved in one day; an average climber will take two days to scale the mountain and all climbers must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide from the local Mountain Guide Association,

On the first day, I had to trek 6km up the mountain to the ‘Pendant Hut’ - an elevation gain of around 1,300m. As a professional triathlete, my body is conditioned for extreme conditions, so I was already well prepared for the trip but, if you are considering the challenge of climbing Mount Kinabalu, it is advisable that you physically prepare yourself for the challenge. I started my trek around mid-morning and along the way the trail passed through fascinating ‘montane’ forest adorned with pitcher plants, rhododendrons, and orchids. I reached Pendant Hut around mid-afternoon, just in time for the mandatory safety briefing for the ‘Via Ferrata,’ an exciting side-adventure I would come to later.

The next day, I was up at 2.30am, and bid Pendant Hut a final goodbye before continuing my ascent to the summit. This part of the ascent is a 2.7km trek with an increase in elevation of 800m. Over 3,000 metres the air starts to get noticeably thinner and, with lower oxygen levels, breathing becomes laboured and the trek gets more difficult as one nears the summit. The lower level of oxygen and extremely low temperatures (around 1 degree Celsius) was slowing me down, but I pressed on with determination. Standing at the summit of Mount Kinabalu at dawn, the sun rose from its slumber and no words could do justice to that magnificent sunrise.

The sunrise signalled the start of my side-adventure – the Via Ferrata walk. ‘Via Ferrata’ is Italian for ‘Iron Road’ and is a route through mountains following ledges, ladders and fixed anchor points on the rock. The climbers are protected from falling by being connected to a steel cable with a harness. In Kinabalu there are two distinct Via Ferrata routes to choose from – the ‘Walk the Torq’ and the ‘Low’s Peak Circuit’ – and climbers can choose from three distinct itineraries ranging from 2 days 1 night to 4 days 3 nights whichever fits their schedule and satisfies their adventurous spirit. I had chosen the Low’s Peak Circuit a route would take an average of 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on the fitness level of the participants.

It was exhilarating but not for people who are afraid of heights. Completing the Via Ferrata, I headed back to the Pendant Hut for lunch before descending to the foot of the mountain. My journey through magical Borneo was a truly inspiring experience, the winds of grace from this land uplifted my soul. In the immortal words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “always do what you are afraid to do. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

The History, Spirituality and Natural Beauty of Karangasem

itting in the shadow of Baliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holy Mount Agung (this is where the gods dwell) and close to the Besakih temple complex, Besakih is the most sacred temple on the island and is known as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Mother Templeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, this is an important area for the Balinese Hindus. Karangasem itself is a historical town and was ruled by the Karangasem Royal Family; it is best known for its two water palaces. The first Taman Sukasada Ujung is a garden palace built 5 klms from Amlapura in 1909 and was used by the Karangasem Royal family during their golden era. The palace itself sits in a large pond filled with huge Koi fish which is fed by a natural spring and surrounded by lush gardens. The park was used as a place of recreation during the Dutch colonial era and was redesigned both in its architecture and layout with a well-polished European style. The site has now been refurbished once again and is a popular place to visit with its royal tropical beauty.

THE EASTERN PART OF BALI IS AN INTERESTING AREA QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE WESTERN PARTS OF THE ISLAND AND WELL WORTH A VISIT. BALI’S MAIN HIGHWAY FROM DENPASAR TO THE EAST IS BEAUTIFULLY SCENIC WITH ITS LUSH GREEN TROPICAL VEGETATION. THE ROAD PASSES ALONG THE SOUTH EASTERN COAST THROUGH GIANYAR AND KLUNGKUNG, PAST THE QUAINT SEAPORT OF PADANG BAI AND ON THROUGH THE TOURIST AREA OF CANDI DASA BEFORE REACHING THE MAIN TOWN OF KARANGASEM.

The second is the royal water palace at Tirta Gangga which was built in 1948 by the King of Karangasem. Set in an area of picture-postcard rice paddy fields Tirta Gangga has a maze of pools and fountains surrounded by lush gardens and decorated with stone carvings and statues, the centrepiece of the complex is a tall eleven tiered fountain. Tirta Gangga was badly damaged by a volcanic eruption in 1963 but has been lovingly restored to its former glory. If we carry on along the main road from Karangasem, we turn North passing through ricefield terraces and tropical forest as we climb over a couple of passes before heading on to Amed and the East coast of Bali. Halfway to Amed, a small road turns off southwards to Pasir Putih, a secluded bay with beautiful white sandy beaches. Amed, a long stretch of coast running about 14 kilometres to the East from the village of Culik and passing through several

villages with small hotels and losmen, is well known for its world-class diving sites which attract both novice and experienced divers alike from around the world. The two most popular sites for diving at Amed are Jemeluk Bay and Tulamben. Tulamben is particularly popular with a wrecked ship to dive on within easy reach of the beach. The wrecked ship is the USS Liberty which was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine in 1942. From Amed, the main road turns North West, and we are met with a spectacular sight, the slopes of Bali’s highest mountain, the sacred Mount Agung, sweeping dramatically down from the dizzying heights of the summit 3,000 metres above us right down to the edge of the blue sea of the Lombok Strait. Through this strait is the world famous ‘Wallace Line’ and, 35 miles away on the other side (visible on a clear day), is the island of Lombok. The strait is very deep, and the waters are troubled with strong currents and whirlpools which have kept Bali and Lombok isolated from each other through aeons of time. It was the remarkable difference in the fauna and flora on the two sides of this strait that lead to Alfred Wallace’s discovery of natural selection and the key to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Eastern Bali is a place with a deeply spiritual and historical significance and, with its natural beauty, places of interest and unique identity, is well worth a look.

here are a number of mustvisit spots around Lembongan. First there is Mushroom Bay to the southwest of Jungut Batu, a quaint, attractive and sheltered bay with a great white sandy beach and some cosy little water-side restaurants. Here you can see traditional boats of various colours docking on its shoreline. It is one of the best beaches in Lembongan, with relatively calm water suitable for swimming. You can explore a bit further into deeper water if you want to see the coral reef. While you are in the area, make time to visit the famous Devil’s Tears. A rocky outcrop that is continuously dashed by high ocean waves, creating a mesmerising, magnificent yet menacing sight of mother nature’s violent beauty.

Be careful not to stand to close to the edge though, it would be easy to be swept away the large waves that can reach as high as 15 metres! Even so, this is a great place to take some memorable pictures. From the Devil Tears, your next stop should be Dream Beach; a place to unwind where soft white sand meets the blue ocean. Time to get up, close and personal with the raw forces of nature but be very careful, water is powerful and the waves here are considered rough so this is not a place for swimming. Hanging around the shoreline you will feel the heavy crash of the waves and the power of the water.

In his profession as a Dalang (a traditional puppeteer), he was inspired by an episode in the famous Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata, known as “Wana Parwa” or twelve years in exile in the forest. In the story Pandawas decided to build a cave, Gala-gala, to protect his family from Korawas who wanted to find and kill all his family. The cave has seven exits (three of which are for ventilation) and facilities which include two kitchens, a sitting room, two bedrooms, and so on. It is interesting to note that Made Byasa used nothing but a crowbar to excavate the Gala Gala cave, he started digging in 1961 and didn’t finish the project until 1976.

he Gili Islands are made up of three small islands called Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno, of these Gili Trawangan is the largest and acts as the entry point for the group. The most convenient way to travel to Gili is by high-speed boat from the Serangan area of Bali. Bluewater Express operate a high-speed boat service that sails regularly to the Gili Islands. Usually, with a brief stop at the Bali port of Padang Bai along the way, the journey takes about 2 hours to reach Gili Trawangan. The Gilis have established themselves as a very popular destination for international visitors looking for a remote island to ‘get away from it all’. If you’re lucky, you might see seahorses and turtles lurking in the depths. Gili Meno is the smallest of the Gili Islands and is sandwiched between the other two. Gili Meno is visited by fewer tourists and is a perfect place for honeymooners or for those who really want to get away from the madding crowd. Whatever you’d like to do, the Gili Islands have much to offer. From the beachside to the underwater marine life, from the tranquillity of island retreats to the exiting international party scene, the Gili Islands have it all.

As I stepped on board I was awestruck with what I found, it was huge and more like a floating five-star hotel than a ship. Not only that, unlike my previous nautical adventures, this ship did not pitch and roll; it was silky smooth gliding effortlessly through the water like a bird. Singapore is one of Asia’s most vibrant and dynamic cities. Some may think they know the place, where to shop and where to dine, but, as I was reminded on a recent visit, Singapore is forever evolving and changing. No matter how often you visit, there is always much more to discover. Here are some of my recent discoveries.

The Ultimate Food Journey The Ultimate Food Journey is the creation of Tribe Tours and offers privately guided tours curated by local people who wish to interact with travellers and tourists and share their knowledge and experience. Our tour started at the Geylang Serai Market, which sells a lot of halal products, giving us a glimpse into the lives of local people and their typical daily visit to the market. Just a short walk across the market and a 2-minute walk from the Joo Chiat Complex, we make a stop at the Sha Zah confectionery, a famous curry puff factory selling a variety of snacks including curry puffs, samosas, epok epok and Sha Zah pies. Next, we headed for the Kway Guan Huat (Joo Chiat Popiah & Kueh Pie Tee) nearby. Here we found ourselves hands on and rolling popiah (fresh spring rolls). Je t’aime Perfumery Fancy your own perfume with your name engraved on the bottle? Look no further than Je t’aime Perfumery, a perfume-making workshop you’ll find at the Goodman Arts Centre. After a brief introduction, you are asked to answer a series of questions that indicate your personality. This identifies which ingredients suit your character and from there you can start choosing the oils and combining them in a bottle. The end result is your very own signature scent. Vespa Tour by SG Sideways One of Singapore’s latest attractions and launched at the end of April, SG Sideways presents the world’s first vintage Vespa sidecar tour service, a tour that will take you to experience Singapore’s sights, sounds and flavours up close and personal. Don’t expect to be taken to the usual major tourist traps; this is a tour that will take you off the beaten track as you breeze across unexplored open rooftops and down quaint alleyways where you’ll come face-to-face with the locals. I was lucky enough to try the Vespa tour before it was officially launched, my tour started from the Malay Heritage Centre and cruised through Kampong Glam, passing many places I’ve never seen before.

Tulipmania @Garden by the Bay Tulipmania is an annual highlight on the Gardens’ calendar of floral displays, offering visitors the chance to see flowers not normally seen in Singapore. In its fifth edition, the well-loved tulip festival has transformed Singapore’s Flower Dome into a floral art gallery with two of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, his self-portrait and The Starry Night, both recreated with tulips and hyacinths. The displays feature over 30,000 blooms, made up of some 90 different varieties of tulips and hyacinths and all from the Netherlands. A highlight this year are Darwin hybrid tulips, known for their vibrant and large cup-shaped blooms.

On my visit, I opted for a Kir Royal, a French cocktail of blackcurrant liquor and white wine and one of my favourite drinks.

As the name suggests, the Cocoon Mask is a process in which the face is wrapped like a cocoon. The treatment proper can now begin with the application of an active ingredient ampoule and base face mask. A face mask and a gentle soft foam enveloped my face like a cocoon for around 15 minutes, delivering highly concentrated active ingredients to the skin, giving it improved energy and suppleness and leaving it more healthy. The wrappings warm the skin allowing the healing nutrients to be more easily absorbed.

Since his childhood, A. A. Ngurah Anom Manik Agung, S.Sn., A.FPSI was always a true adorer of art, especially paintings. Using only a sheet of paper and few colouring implements, he has been able to express his feelings, emotions and creativity through beautiful works of art. Anom Manik Agung was well on his way to becoming recognised as one of the island’s painting maestros, however, during his time at college, he became distracted caught up in the alluring world of photography.

With a mindset that photography is an endless journey of learning, Anom Manik Agung has become recognised as an adept photographer in many different fields; from culture, fashion, wedding, architecture, travel, street, documentary, to product photography. He is ready to explore anything that catches his eye. As a Balinese, Anom Manik Agung pays particular attention to the island’s culture, capturing spiritual events with his lenses and turning them into magnificent, timeless images. His skill in this field can be seen in some of his best-known images ‘Ramayana Epic’, ‘Smile’ and ‘Super Woman’. Further establishing his presence in the world of photography, Anom Manik Agung has never been afraid to stray from the commercial path to prove his skills taking part in prestigious competitions at local, national and international levels. His achievements speak for themselves, Anom Manik Agung has won not only one or two competitions, but many. Gerald Clayton has been nominated four times for Grammy awards, he won second place in the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition and earned a 2010 Grammy nomination for ‘Best Improvised Jazz Solo’ for his arrangement of Cole Porter’s ‘All of You.’ Mr Clayton will be accompanied by Joe Sanders; one of the most sought-after young bass players of his generation. Recently Joe was placed 2nd in the finals of both the International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and the Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Bass Competition. This highly talented trio is completed with Gregory Hutchinson on drums. According to Martin Kunzler, his highly differentiated, “lively” style is reminiscent of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe Jones and, according to Jazz Magazine, he is “the drummer of his generation”. As part of their cultural support programme, the Australian Embassy is sponsoring Steve Barry and his group to visit Bali. Steve Barry is a pianist, organist, composer and improviser based in Sydney, Australia. He is the winner of the 2013 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz
