publisher’s note

As the old wisdom says ‘travel broadens the mind’ and, while a new year doesn’t always mean you need to choose a new holiday destination, it is always a good idea to keep adding new places and new experiences to your travelers bucket list. Living in Asia, with its wealth of travel options, is a major advantage but, as travel becomes easier and the tyranny of distance recedes, your dreams of far flung destinations can be realised even if your busy life allows only short getaways. In this edition, we present some of the best destinations that offer you not only endless choices of sumptuous accommodation and decadent dining but, most importantly, unforgettable experiences. We’ll take a look at some of the premium resorts around Bali such as the InterContinental Bali Resort, Soori Bali, Kupu Kupu Barong and, further afield, the new chic St. Regis Langkawi and the impressive Rachamankha in Chiang Mai. For enthusiasts of the culinary arts, Bali is never short of choice in its ever increasing array of offerings and we feature a selection of restaurants on the island that provide excellent food, refreshing drinks and gorgeous venues such as Sayan House, Arsana, Da Maria Bali and many more.

ucked away in an exclusive enclave in its’ own tranquil, private cove on Langkawi’s southern tip, The St. Regis Langkawi is fringed by a 600-meter private white sand beach overlooking the Andaman Sea. The architectural footprint of the resort closely adheres to that of a luxurious private residential palace nestled within steep rocky hills forming two small peninsulas along a sandy shore. In keeping with the design concept, the resort thoughtfully blends indoor spaces naturally with the outdoors, and consists of a six-storey central mansion with two lagoon suite wings cascading outwards towards the shorelines. Capitalizing on its expansive beach, The St. Regis Langkawi is the first luxury all-suite resort on the islands, offering four overwater villas and 85 suites, including 20 private pool suites with cabanas. A four-bedroom overwater villa and three one-bedroom overwater villas offer unrivalled sunset views. To arouse the senses of its guests, the resort features a number of dining choices both in venue and experience. Kayu Puti, the resort’s Asian-influenced restaurant and bar, is conceptualized as a vintage beach house, evoking the relaxed glamour of the Malaysian Riviera from its perch over the lagoon. Another of the resort’s signature restaurants, L’Orangerie, evokes the design of a traditional European greenhouse of citrus

trees. The restaurant showcases a potted orange tree at its centre, an open kitchen, and extends to a wide courtyard terrace with panoramic vistas of the sea. Specifically designed for chilling out, The St. Regis Bar features a stunning hand carved wooden mural depicting a banyan tree, providing guests with a rich atmosphere influenced by scenic views of the dense rainforest, while the Decanter Wine Cellar, an exclusive bar within The St. Regis bar, has floor-toceiling wine cabinets housing an impressive collection of more than a thousand bottles. Offering a space for rejuvenation, the resort’s Iridium Spa offers guests a rare and refined wellness experience that is set in a quaint interior wrapped within a cocoon of waters cascading on the windows of the treatment rooms.

Revealing Ancient Serenity at RACHAMANKHA

SITUATED IN THE HEART OF THE 700 YEAR OLD ANCIENT CITY OF CHIANG MAI IN NORTHERN THAILAND, RACHAMANKHA IS RENOWNED FOR ITS PRIVATE AND PEACEFUL SETTING. THE HOTEL’S WONDERFUL ARCHITECTURE PAYS HOMAGE TO CHIANG MAI’S GOLDEN AGE, THE LANNA PERIOD, AND OFFERS GUESTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE ONE OF THOSE UNIQUE PROPERTIES WITH A DEEP SEATED SENSE OF PLACE IN THE WORLD.

As

one of the leading luxury hotels in Thailand, Rachamanka does not blatantly reveal itself to the passerby, instead its presence excites curiosity and a sense of inquisitiveness. Only after passing through the hotel forecourt and the Zen-like simplicity and sophistication of the colonnaded courtyards is the inner world of serenity and contentment revealed. As a member of Secret Retreats, a curated collection of small charming boutique hotels in Asia, Rachamankha was designed by Thai architect Ong-ard Satrabhandhu in the style of residential living which stimulates a genuine feeling for the history and culture of Lanna Chiang Mai. The hotel’s distinctive architectural aesthetic was inspired by the eleventh century B.C. traditional Chinese dwellings, in which Northern Thai architecture has its roots.

The 22 luxurious superior and deluxe bedrooms and three exquisite suites of Rachamankha were conceived according to an oriental concept of simplicity albeit with extraordinary attention to detail. Walls are made with traditional lime plaster over handmade brick, the same technique used in temples since the founding of Chiang Mai in 1296. The common design theme is the uninhibited mix of antiques from different periods and from around the world; from Europe, Africa, China, Burma and Thailand; which are scattered throughout the hotel. All rooms are fully equipped with every amenity for either work or leisure: wireless internet connection, cable TV with large LED screen and CD/DVD player. The owner himself oversees every detail of each lodging and is continually working to improve and develop the furnishing and decoration so regular guests will always find something new each time they visit. The restaurant of Rachamankha boasts elegant interior settings for both Al Fresco areas on the patio and fully indoor spaces. It offers rare tastes of Chiang Mai with arrays of traditional dishes celebrating Lanna, Burmese and Shan cuisines paired with an extensive selection of quality wines. There is also a variety of events to keep guests entertained during their stay; from a celebration of Lanna heritage to Burmese evenings with marionette performances, guitar recitals, charity concerts and book launches to family weddings. Rachamankha also owns an old Library that houses over 2,000 books ranging from novels to works on Thai history of art and architecture, design and culture. The library serves as a lounge to relax, chat and take refreshments. An enchanting open-air massage pavilion is also available, overlooking a tranquil 20-meter pool where drinks and light snacks are served pool-side throughout the day.

The secret is out, people are starting to know about the Gili Islands, their popularity has sky rocketed and they have become one of Indonesia’s most visited destinations for both domestic and international holidaymakers. The three Gili Islands lie just off the northwest coast of Lombok and each has its own character and is attractive to a different type of person. Party people and the young at heart choose to go to Gili Trawangan with its host of bars and entertainment venues. It has become known as “the party island and parties are in full swing particularly around the time of the full moon. From Gili Trawangan visitors can catch a short boat ride to Gili Air, the most populated and closest of the three islands to Lombok. The island is blessed with great snorkelling and diving sites accessible from its white sandy beaches. Sandwiched between the other two islands and the smallest of the three, Gili Meno is a total contrast. Quiet and laid back it offers tropical island tranquility, a place to contemplate the world in peaceful solitude.

The island’s most popular activities are diving and snorkeling but this is a place that lends itself to relaxation. Holidaying in Langkawi, Malaysia is recommend. Despite of being one of the tourist main attractions since decades ago, the development of Langkawi Island is well balanced. The government kept the original face of the island—a rural Malaysian region where traditional kampung (village) clustered and continue their daily lives as they have done for generations. Langkawi is actually a collection of 104 islands just off the coast of Kedah, but only the largest one that act as a tourist destination—conveniently named ‘Langkawi Island for that functional reason. Mainly, Langkawi is a gorgeous island blessed with pristine white-sandy beaches, lush forest area, and clear blue water surrounding its vicinity. On 2008, the archipelago officially entitled as ‘The Jewel of Kedah’ for its mesmerizing natural landscape.

NATURE - A WORD THAT WE ALL KNOW WELL BUT A WORD TO WHICH WE CAN ASSIGN DIFFERENT MEANINGS. SOME MAY THINK OF IT AS AWE-INSPIRING AND HEALING, A FORCE THAT CAN REJUVENATE THE BODY, MIND, AND SOUL, WHILE OTHERS MAY SEE IT AS A FORCE OF DESTRUCTION THAT CAN LEAVE TRAILS OF UNPARALLELED DEVASTATION.

journey

Sri Lanka is a country that is misunderstood by the many but raved about by the few. The country boasts a wide array of immersion opportunities that appeal to all types of traveller from the culture vulture seeking rich cultural heritage, to the paradise pilgrim in search of scenic landscapes and to the adventurous daredevil exploring an untamed side of Sri Lanka filled with the natural wonders of its wildlife.

Trip Preparation As an avid travel photographer, I constantly dwell upon the very definition of people, things, and environments. At a more philosophical level, you could say that it is about the exploration of polarities in life. Patience is the most fundamental quality that any photographer needs to possess if he is to capture those stunning moments that speak through the still. When one is out in the wild waiting for that single perfect shot, he is at the mercy of nature. It was the feeling of absorbing everything that Mother Nature has to offer, contrasting with the excitement of fulfilling one’s passion for photography that led me on a journey to Sri Lanka.

Elusive Leopards and Humanity This was my second visit to Sri Lanka and words alone cannot describe the beauty of the country, one of my favourite places in Asia. Through my photographs and this accompanying article, I shall attempt to bring you into the world of the wildlife in Sri Lanka and to immerse you in the wonders of it. I contacted Sri Lanka Tourism Board for assistance on the best places to visit for capturing wildlife animals, specifically the leopards, and was recommended three national parks – Wilpattu National Park, Gal Oya National Park, and Yala National Park. I was especially recommended to stay at Gal Oya Lodge when visiting the Gal Oya National Park as the lodge offers boat safari rides to guests – the one and only boat safari experience

journey

in Sri Lanka. The charm of it lies in the opportunity to observe various birds and animals, particularly elephants, seen in their natural habitat while cruising down the river.

I was told that leopards and sloths have been sighted in the park and these are the main attractions and I find myselfexcited at the thought of seeing these animals close up.

Although leopards are the smallest of the big cat species, they are still a powerful force to be reckoned with. The dominant colour of the coat and the variation in size is dependent on the habitat that the leopard lives in. These characteristics piqued my interest in photographing them in their natural habitat.

When we got to the park wefoundmany different species of birds, elephants and other animals which I was able to capture in their natural habitat. But – no leopards and, after a few days of revisiting the park, the elusive leopards were still nowhere to be seen.

Wilpattu National Park

Gal Oya National Park

My trip started out in Colombo where I took a bus to Palagama Beach Resort. The resort is located on a private beach that is well away from the usual hustle and bustle of beaches that we are all too familiar with. The tranquillity was a refreshing change from the fast-paced society that I usually find myself in.

In between the ongoing hunt for leopards, I took time out to enjoy the sand, the sun, and the sea at the Palagama Beach Resort. Then, feeling fully rejuvenated and having bid farewell to the resort’s pristine beach, I decided to travel on to Gal Oya National Park for a change of environment and a whole new experience.

After completing the check-in process I deposited my luggage and, armed with an XT1 camera and 100 - 400mm fujifilm, I set off in a jeep to Wilpattu National Park accompanied by a local naturalist.

On my arrival I was greeted at the charming Gal Oya Lodge – an eco-friendly lodge set deep within its natural surroundings. Spread over 20 acres of private forest, the lodge disconnects travellers from the world outside and transports them into a

world of wonder. Pushing the boundaries and championing the idea of sustainability, each of Gal Oya Lodge’seight bungalows are constructed from locally-sourced materials. Visitors to Gal Oya National Park can choose from a myriad of activities to satisfy the adventurous soul! From wild jungle drives to adrenaline-pumping mountain biking rides and nature walks, Gal Oya National Park has got all your needs covered. Taking time off from hunting the ever elusive leopards, I took the opportunity to visit the Veddas, an indigenous group of Sri Lankan people. The Veddas speak Tamil and Sinhala as their indigenous language is almost extinct and so, with the help of a translator, I was able to learn from the tribal chief about the tribe’s traditional use of medicinal plants, their ancient hunting grounds and their cave dwellings.

Yala National Park The last stop of my Sri Lanka trip was at the Yala National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the whole of Sri Lanka and home to a wide range of wildlife animals including - leopards. What is so captivating about wildlife photography is the uncertainty involved and the excitement that comes along with it. You prepare yourself carefully ready to capture some wild moments, you set your mind to it, pursuing your target and staking out likely places sometimes even risking your life for it. Once prepared all you need is for the stars to align and for that magical moment to happen.

Well, as it happened lady luck was with me this time. I was able to track down not only one, but two leopards at different locations within the park. The sight of their agile, gracefulforms with theirdensespotted coats was truly majestic. Taking in the breathtaking magnificence of it all, I feel truly blessed to have been able to enjoy such special moments and for the immense feeling of accomplishment that came with them.

Beauty of Sri Lanka My trip to Sri Lanka was a rollercoaster ride for me – from anticipation to disappointment and ultimately, the exhilaration of seeing leopards up close and personal. Hailed as one of the most culturally, historically, and spiritually-diverse countries in the world, Sri Lanka is indeed a land of wonders only visible to those who seek them out. There is, of course, so much more to do in Sri Lanka and I am sure to return one day. We each have our own approachto travel and my personal motto is: by taking the path less-travelled you can find a sense of exultation in creating your own special memories and, as the age old adage says, a life well-travelled is a life well-lived.

the quietness of the temple and respect the worshippers who come to pray. The statue itself is located to the left side of the temple and is becoming a popular place to visit. It is a beautifully fashioned gigantic pearl white structure set in a tranquil backdrop of blue sky and green forest. A picture taken in front of the statue is more reminiscent of Thailand than Indonesia. Margarana Park in the village of Marga is a peaceful green park which was once the scene of a famous Balinese battle. One of several ‘Puputan’ battles was fought on this site between a 96 strong Balinese army lead by I Gusti Ngurah Rai who faced an occupying force of 400 of the Dutch colonial army. While the Dutch won the Puputan battles they lost the war, they were humiliated by the bravery of the Balinese which lead to the Dutch withdrawal from Bali. To commemorate the battles, a memorial monument and heroes cemetery were built in the grounds of Margarana Park and tourists are welcome to visit.

SPREAD OVER AN AREA OF 800 KM2, THE REGENCY OF TABANAN IS WIDELY CONSIDERED AS BALI’S ‘GREEN BELT’. WITH ITS LUSH GREEN LANDSCAPE THIS IS AN AREA WHICH OFFERS A REFRESHING CHANGE AND THE CHANCE TO GET AWAY FROM THE CLAMOUR AND HUBBUB OF THE MAIN TOURIST AREAS TO SEE SOME OF THE REAL BALI. WITHIN THE SERENITY OF ITS TIMELESS VILLAGES AND VERDANT GREEN FIELDS ARE HIDDEN A NUMBER OF CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL SITES THAT REFLECT THE ISLAND’S RICH HERITAGE AND ARE WELL WORTH A VISIT.

Tabanan is famous for its beautiful emerald green sculptured terraces of rice paddy fields which are irrigated by a famous world heritage listed 800 year old irrigation system known as the ‘Subak’. Unique to Bali, the Subak is all across the island and consists of a ingeniously designed complex network of canals, weirs and sluice gates which carry water to every corner of the rice growing areas. One of the best places to see Balinese rice terraces and the Subak is the world-renowned area of Jatiluwih, which sits under the mountains in the Northern part of the Tabanan region. Finally, what is probably the best known place to visit in Tabanan is, of course, the legendary Temple of Tanah Lot. This temple is known throughout the world, it features a sacred Balinese Pura (temple) built on a natural rock formation surrounded by the sea. Photographs of the temple on the rock, often pictured as a silhouette with a stunning sunset sky behind it, have become the most enduring image of Bali and

has been published in books, magazines, postcards, websites and travel brochures all across the world. Understandably Tanah Lot is one of the most anticipated places to see by visitors to Bali.

aving visited Bangkok many times over the years, the city has become one of my favourite destinations. The first thing I look for as soon as I land is, of course, Thai food.

Siam Paragon Food Hall is one of the best food courts in the city and a haven for foodies, a place where you can find a vast variety of Thai food including desserts and snacks. Located on the ground floor, this huge area is divided into 3; a food court, a food gallery and a take home food hall.

Perhaps you would prefer to dine somewhere with a little more to see, an ideal choice is a dinner cruise on the legendary Chao Phraya River that winds through Bangkok. You’ll can enjoy wonderful food while taking in the sights of the iconic 70-meter Wat Arun temple, also known as the Temple of Dawn with its intricate coloured glass and Chinese porcelain patterning.

A visit to Bangkok would not be complete without a visit to the Grand Palace, one of the most famous attractions in Bangkok. Many people are drawn to see its impressive architecture with its intricate decoration. Located in the heart of Bangkok, the Grand Palace was built in 1782 and for 150 years was the home of the Thai King, the Royal court and the administrative seat of government. Shopping is one of the most tempting attractions of Bangkok. Enjoy the Bangkok Grand Sale that takes place from the month of June until August each year. Some of the best shopping centers are Siam Paragon, The Emporium, Terminal 21, The Platinum Fashion Mall and EmQuartier. Don’t forget to stop by at the Chatuchak weekend market, the world’s largest outdoor market where you will find an endless array of merchandise.

Sunrise Sequence: Exploring the Wonders of

Japan

JAPAN IS KNOWN ACROSS THE WORLD FOR MANY THINGS, ITS FASCINATING CULTURE, ITS UNIQUE CUISINE AND, TO THOSE PEOPLE IN THE KNOW, ITS MAGNIFICENT NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THE ‘LAND OF THE RISING SUN’ IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES THAT MUST BE EXPERIENCED AT LEAST ONCE IN A LIFETIME.

J

apan is an extraordinary place to visit, a mezmerising culture in which ancient noble tradition rubs up against with the world’s most advanced technologies, technologies that have been exported all over the world and become incorporated into the everyday lives of ordinary people. When we consider a place with such a wealth of appealing experiences it is difficult to know where to start. This wonderful country is famous for its Cherry Blossom and one of Japan’s most fascinating traditions is Hanami, literally translated as ‘flower viewing’. Every year, from the end of March to early May, the sakura flower is in bloom all over Japan and throughout this period, the people of Japan hold outdoor parties beneath the sakura tree during both day and nighttime to enjoy the cherry blossom with their

family and friends. It is a time of bonding together and cherishing special memories. One of the best places to see the cherry blossom is on the central lawn area of the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo. Famous for its ancient buildings many of which are steeped in history, a starting point might be the Kinkaku-Ji Zen Buddhist Temple. Widely known as the Golden Pavilion, this beautiful temple is surrounded by green trees set in front of a clear lake and is visited by

thousands of tourists every year who come to enjoy its splendour. From winter to summer the landscape and its colours may change with the seasons but the temple always retains its beauty with its golden reflection shimmering across the rippled surface of the pond before it. The Golden Pavilion temple is a three-story building in the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple complex and the upper two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf. This is one of seventeen sites that make up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. For food lovers visiting Japan and looking for something unusual you can learn about one of the country’s best known indigenous comfort foods at the ShinYokohama Ramen Museum. Founded in 1994 as the world’s first food-themed

amusement park, the museum is devoted to showcasing different versions of Japanese ramen noodle soup and features a recreation of Tokyo back in the year 1958 (that was the year instant noodles were invented). The museum includes branches of famous ramen restaurants from Kyushu to Hokkaido. This is a one-stop place you can sample Japan’s stable dish from renowned restaurants all across the country without all the inconvenience of travelling large distances.

The Taste of Indonesia AT THE ARSANA RESTAURANT

Set in front of the Alila Seminyak, the Arsana Restaurant is the latest addition to Bali’s culinary world focusing solely on authentic Indonesian cuisine and a purpose of educating the public on what the true ‘taste of Indonesia’ is really all about.

I

ndonesian cuisine has been in the spotlight on the island of Bali for some time now, but only a handful of players pay close attention to the concepts they wish to present or to the quality of the dishes they offer. The Arsana Restaurant Bali is one of the few that seeks to bring out nothing but the best renditions of traditional Indonesian recipes combining interesting presentations with exquisite well rounded tastes. The restaurant has appointed one of Indonesia’s internationally acclaimed culinary experts, William Wongso, as their Chef Patron to allow them to achieve their goal. The restaurant features minimalistic interior décor dominated by warm earthy tones, it has a total capacity of 140 seats both indoor and outdoor, and an open kitchen design so guests can observe the cooking process as their meals are being prepared.

Quality Italian Wine & Dine AT DA MARIA BALI

S

et on the edge of the Petitenget area of Seminyak, Da Maria Bali is the brainchild of Australian famed restaurateur Maurice Terzini, in collaboration with Motel Mexicola’s Adrian Reed. With spectacular dining locations already established in Sydney such as Icebergs Dining Room and Bar (IDRB) and Da Orazio Pizza & Porchetta in Bondi Beach and The Dolphin Hotel in Surry Hills along with other influential dining venues, Maurice Terzini has a gift for dreaming the big picture and executing it, and is now turning his eye to establishing successful dining destinations in Asia with his first installment in the island of Bali. Da Maria Bali boasts a menu that features an array of fun and accessible dishes that present a modern approach to simple, classic Italian flavors with pizza undoubtedly set to become one of its favourites. The pizzas of Da Maria are made from 24-hour fermented dough and cooked in local, Naples inspired lava stone ovens. A special dish worthy of mention is the traditional Italian Porchetta (whole local pig) marinated in local herbs and cooked slowly over coals. Seafood lovers can indulge their taste buds with such tantalising fare as Snapper Crudo with orange, fennel pollen, finger lime; Calamary St Andrea with ink aioli and rocket or House made pappardelle with king prawns, cherry tomatoes, chili and basil. The bar at Da Maria has a very ‘American’ feel and focuses on elegant simplicity with most drinks having the flavour profile of Campari or Aperol, blended with white spirits, local fruit and citrus.

Brought together in a collaboration between two great restaurateurs, Da Maria Bali is a modern Italian restaurant in the Osteria style highlighting the diversity of Italian food, wine, music, fashion, art and friends, with more than a little Capri in the heart of Seminyak.

Wild, Health Driven Fare AT THE SAVAGE KITCHEN

D

espite the name, there is nothing ‘uncivilised’ about the Savage Kitchen. The restaurant provides a healthy but exciting dining experience presenting fare made from clean, unrefined, natural ingredients sourced from organic and free range farms across the archipelago. At Savage Kitchen there are, in fact, two restaurants in one and each with its own menu to choose from. For the casual diner there is the patio area while the Savage Bistronomy offers a more formal fine dining experience. The menus of Savage Kitchen are based on the modern day diverse range of cuisine found in Australia but with a distinct Asian twist. As a starter we suggest you might like to try roasted coconut pumpkin; slices of pumpkin, roasted to perfection with grated coconut on top, tasty and with a hint of natural sweetness. For seafood lovers the salmon & sweet potato rosti offers a healthy blend of sea goodness with melting poached egg - crispy yet creamy at the same time. If you wish to stray from the set menu Savage Creation allows you to create your own combination, a grand ‘pick-your-own portion’ from meat, vegetables and tasty condiments.

In the heart of Canggu, the Savage Kitchen is an exciting new concept that takes us back to the natural way people should eat offering healthy cuisine made from the finest natural ingredients Mother Nature can provide. Here there is something for everyone, for the casual diner, the more discerning fine diner and for the dedicated vegetarian.

After asking what degree of pressure one prefers: soft, medium or strong, the talented and friendly therapist adjusts her technique to suit the customer’s personal needs. First we have the usual foot cleansing, followed by a deep relaxing massage from the Chinese tradition, selected to eliminate fatigue and relieve back tensions. Thumb pressing is used to address particular issues and is very effective in treating back pain. Initial pain gives way to pleasure as knots are found and eased away by

expert hands. This first stage removes tension, calms the senses and lulls you into a state of full relaxation. The Chinese deep massage is then followed by a Malay abdomen massage, this traditional therapy releases negative energy, helps in proper digestion and strengthens weak and relaxed abdominal muscles. Finally there is an Indian massage technique using a Kansu bowl which is pressed into the sole of the foot with a circular movement. This technique is used to stimulate the circulation of the blood and reenergize the muscles. grow up wanting to become a lot of things but often it is not until we actually come of age that we discover our true potential and calling. This is what happened for Ida Bagus Tri Dharma Dipta, better known as Gus Dharma. After graduating from university with a degree in religious studies, he was on course to become a lecturer in the Hindu Religion before life set him on an entirely different path. In his teenage years Gus Dharma had watched his father painting and it was this that sparked his interest in the artistic world of photography. He bought his first camera from money he earned selling prepaid phone credit. Gus Dharma’s photographs speak of sincerity. He is a versatile photographer who is able to capture a broad cross section of subject matter in his pictures, from food, landscapes and special occasions, to interiors but his true passion is in human nature. He is also a believer in the authentic art of photography and one of the few that don’t fall back on ‘digital editing’ processes. He takes pride in using his skill as a photographer to capture his images and presenting his photographs as complete works in their original form. During time off from his full-time work as a senior photographer at MixMedia, Gus Dharma dreams of having his own blog as a digital platform to showcase his portfolio of years of work and to share his perspective and his view of the world through frame after frame of high quality photos.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY OF PANDU ADNYANA Pandu Adnyana is a landscape photographer based in Bali. His passion in landscape photography began when he worked for a magazine and was amazed as he discovered the beauty of Bali.

He

is self-taught and has learned most of his photography expertise from the internet. “As Balinese, I feel blessed that I was born on such a beautiful island with its wealth of culture and warm friendly people. In Bali there are abundant photographic opportunities, its mountains, valleys, lakes, rice fields, waterfalls and beaches offer endless landscape and nature possibilities and for life portraits and architectural images there is the wealth of Balinese culture.”

Pandu was selected as one of the 25 best in Tropical Life’s Online Photographic Competition. Like all true artists Pandu expresses his emotions through his photography, his feelings and moods whether it be tranquility, emptiness, peacefulness or simply the beauty of nature. In composing an image, he chooses a subject by looking for a particularly unusual foreground, pattern or natural motion. Sometimes he starts out having already formed an idea though he usually goes with the flow and allows things to unfold. Before setting out he scouts for a suitable location and checks the weather forecast, he may also read the tide chart if the location is on a beach. He loves taking candid shots of local people such as fishermen or farmers going about their daily activities. He uses a number of photographic techniques which he has found gives him the best results including CPL, neutral density and gradual ND filters, multiple exposures and black card techniques. He uses Photoshop and Lightroom programs for computer based post processing. Pandu graduated from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya majoring in product design and currently is working as a graphic designer in a hotel in Nusa Dua. He does freelance interior and architectural photography projects for hotels and villas and also runs the occasional photography tour around Bali. He feels lucky that he loves his job and that his hobby is part of his work. “For me having a talent is great and, with practice, it is constantly improving. However keeping passionate about my hobby is very important. Sometimes I can feel bored and it is easy to get stuck if I push it too hard and I can lose the desire to carry on. So, if you have a hobby enjoy it but make sure you spare time for your family.”
