Something not to be missed is the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that epitomises the sensual scenic wonder of the island as terraced paddies step downwards from the foot of Mt. Batukaru towards the coast. The beautiful Sekumpul Waterfall is a site that roars homage to the verdant lushness of this tropical paradise. Take a look at nature’s raw power and visit Mount Batur situated aside Batur Village in Kintamani. journey

I am attending races and challenging places to train when I am travelling for photo shoots. Someone once told me that life is not always about competition, rather, it is an amalgamation of knowledge, empathy, and appreciation - a way of life, as envisioned by a wise friend of mine. When I decided to take part in the 50K Jeju Trail Running 2016, I immediately got on my laptop to research the island and was most enthralled by what I saw.

As

a travel photographer, I am always fascinated by different cultures and intrigued by what it means to lead a ‘local life’. As a professional triathlete, I am always motivated to push through boundaries, and to constantly scale new heights in this unconventional and adventurous career path. I constantly try to bring these two passions together and find a delicate balance between them – finding interesting places to photograph when

62

TropicaLife.net

No doubt, the place is gorgeous but it was a group of women who got me intrigued. When I saw photographs of these women they looked awe-inspiring decked out in their wetsuits, I knew I just had to be there. In case you are wondering, I am referring to the Haenyeo divers – Korea’s women of the sea. During their heyday in the 1960s, more than 30,000 Haenyeo women dived off the shores of Jeju and Udo Island daily. Today, less than 5,000 of these Haenyeo women remain and twothirds of them are now over the age of 60. With higher levels of education, modern Korean women are looking to the outside world for job opportunities instead of inheriting the traditional

journey

roll of their forebears. What I find very interesting about the Haenyeo women is that they dive into the ocean without any special tools to gather clams, abalone, or seaweed. This is what differentiates them from the modern divers you see elsewhere around the world. Jeju female divers enjoyed freedom, independence, and selfrespect and their work is one of the country’s most celebrated traditions. This group of women is so loved by their fellow countrymen that the government requested that they be added to the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Immediately I touched down to Jeju Island I approached the Jeju Island tourism counter to find out how I could get in touch with the Haenyeo divers. As a foreigner in a small town without a guide or a translator this request proved to be quite an interesting challenge for me. The locals did not speak English and my knowledge of the Korean language is zilch. It took me a while to locate the Haenyeo women – getting around the island and keeping my eyes peeled for any signs

or trails of these mermaids of the sea. Riding on a scooter with my luggage and trying to navigate around the island with a map turned out to be quite the circus show for most of the villagers. Almost every village on Jeju has its own group of Haenyeo women and they are strictly restricted to diving within their own village zones. There is a small dive house in each village that serves as a congregation point for these women to change and get ready for dives, store their belongings, or to just relax and take breaks between dives. The women can often be seen chatting in groups inside or around the house. In order to capture intricate moments of the Haenyeo women at work and to better understand this unique profession, I decided to take part in their activities and accompany them on the boat for two dives at Hyeopjae Beach and Seongsan Port. Seongsan is located near to Korea’s first UNESCO Natural World Heritage site - Seongsan Ilchulbong. Also known as the Sunrise Peak, it the perfect place to watch the sunrise and is touted as one of the must-do activities for tourists to Jeju Island. Before the first light of the day, the Haenyeo women were already at the dive house getting

ready for the day’s work. Some arrived on their scooters while others were either dropped off by their husbands or came on foot pushing carts containing their equipment. I arrived at the dive house around 5.30am, slightly earlier than my diving mermaids so that I could capture moments of them preparing for the dive and getting the boat ready to aid them through to a bountiful haul. Rocking against the menacing roar of the sea as it stretched outward to the horizon, the atmosphere on the boat was, by contrast, quite tranquil. As we arrived at the dive site, the divers started to make final adjustments to their wetsuits and prepared diving masks with a lotion mix of vegetable oil to prevent them from fogging up. I stayed on the surface of the ocean to observe the action in order to get the big picture. Apart from the standard diving gear used, the Haenyeo women also carried a number of tools down with them on each dive. A flat prying tool akin to a heavy dull knife blade, a (bitchang); or a small sickle for cutting seaweed and a ( jonggae-homi); a broad bladed knife for removing sea urchins and a small hoe for pulling octopuses and sea cucumbers from crevices in the (gol-gengi) or reef. Notable for their hospitable nature, the Haenyeo divers offered some of their catch of to me as a token of appreciation. I had the great honour of tasting seafood personally extracted by these fascinating and strong Haenyeo women – the seafood included turban snails, sea urchins, gelidium algae, sea cucumbers, abalone, and undaria seaweed. The seafood tasted exceptionally fresh and the seaweed that was scooped from the surface of the sea was so deliciously fresh and cold.

In addition to looking after their dive kit, to make sure that the dive went as smoothly as possible, the divers would take a pill to help control the headaches that can be brought on by the water pressure and they would also constantly keep a lookout for each other as soon as they hit the water. Danger lurks in every corner of the sea and each dive puts their lives at risk. Strong currents and poor visibility makes the job even more perilous. At the divers advanced age they could easily be washed out to sea or caught up in a riptide and drown. This trip to Jeju Island made me realise how incredible and resilient humans can be. The adage of health is wealth struck me as I was photographing these Haenyeo women. Standing stoic and peering fearlessly towards the unforgiving ocean, these women are redefining life through their own actions as the beautiful mermaids of Jeju. In every photograph that I shot, I tried to unfold the realm of the Haenyeo divers. Some of them are presented in monotone to draw you into a deeper sense of emotion – to experience and appreciate these women and their job. It was a satisfying experience for me to witness and document this part of Korean culture. One can find beauty in everything; it is all about how you look at things. This is my take on the Haenyeo Divers - my mermaids. Article by Jose Jeuland (used Fujifilm Camera XT1 & X100T) www.josejeuland.com

Jeju divers are highly skilled individuals and a great degree of physical fitness is required of them. Equipped with only a lead-weighted vest and goggles, the divers can free dive up to a depth of 20 meters, and can stay underwater for up to three minutes. Most of the Haenyeo women that I followed on their diving trips were able to stay underwater for over two minutes, though there were a few more skilled divers who stayed down longer. When they resurface for air, their expelled breath makes a high-pitched whistling sound, which is their unique way of breathing out the carbon dioxide and breathing in fresh oxygen.

My first destination was the shoreline on Southern side of Lombok and even though a little remote, was definitely worth a visit. There is only one way to get to this part of the coast and that is from the island’s capitol Mataram. From there I passed through the central island area until I arrived at Kuta beach. Although bearing the same name of its Bali counterpart, this area offers a far more tranquil embrace than its namesake on Bali. Lack of tourist infrastructure means the area’s natural lines are still maintained and it is a real joy to tread this uncluttered part of the island’s Western shoreline. From there I took the scenic route toward Selong Belanak, a discreet beach that has recently gained popularity for its soft white sand and calm waters between the lush of green steeped hills. The road leading to this beach redefines the adjective in ‘scenic route’ – breathtaking beauty.

The Senggigi area is not to be missed; this famous spot on Lombok’s Northwestern corner is known for the curves and lines of its magnificent beaches. There are several popular spots worth visiting in Senggigi’s swathe of natural beauty. Here there is the daunting ‘Vila Hantu’— an abandoned hilltop villa with views of picture perfect scenery of Senggigi and its ocean beyond. Here there is Melaka beach where coconut trees lean forward as if in homage to the beachfront area. To sate a traveller’s hunger, one should have lunch at Nipah beach where traditional ‘warung’ restaurants line facing the ocean and serve fresh-catch ocean gliders that are grilled to perfection with delicious spices. The merchants here sell their fresh fish at affordable prices so one is not required to bargain before lunch.

To compliment my amazing journey, Living Asia Resort & Spa Lombok became my intimate getaway. Located at Senggigi, this lavish resort takes advantage of its privileged location on one of the very best sandy beaches of Lombok. Beside comfortable guest rooms featuring thoughtful amenities, Living Asia Resort & Spa Lombok also provides top class facilities, including a great restaurant with an exciting menu of local and international specialties, a tropical beach bar offering cocktails and snacks and an oversized infinity pool with plush floating beds to which to relax over a breathtaking vista of sunset on a red and golden sea. My trip to Lombok turned out to be a marvellous discovery of hitherto unexplored parts of Lombok. I got to know more about the island’s natural environment and will certainly return for more of this surprising neighbour of Bali.

fter a few days on business in Thailand’s capitol Bangkok, I took a plane to Krabi from where I started my island hopping tour. Krabi lies at the mouth of the Krabi River on the west coast of southern Thailand in the province bearing the same. My first ride was to Phi Phi Leh and its marvellous Maya Bay. This bay; shielded by 100 metre cliffs on 3 sides presents such a stunning sight that I would recommend it to any traveller visiting this area. Better you call it ‘Koh (No) Mai Phai’ though as there is not a stick of bamboo to be found on the island. palace, parks, and Javanese cultural wonders are some of the major attractions that draw visitors to this city. Formerly known as Surakarta, this mild-mannered city was once a royal precinct and is regarded as the least Westernized city of Central Java. This is good news for the wanderlust traveller seeking to gain knowledge and experience of the glory days of the Javanese historical era. Upon arriving at Adisumarno International Airport, my first destination during this trip was Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro. The grand traditional market built in 1929 as a part of Keraton Kesunanan or Solo’s Royal Kingdom. Designed by Dutch architect Thomas Karsten, the structure is a fine blend of Javanese and Dutch architecture that today properly functions as a one-stop market for daily needs. Here one can find some of Solo’s legendary culinary treats, from brambang asem, es dawet selasih, nasi tumpang, and many more. I find my visits here are a culinary treat and usually manage to sample something of each of all that is on offer. After the markets I visited Keraton Surakarta Hadinignrat, which is located in the heart of Solo. This landmark structure was once the place where the Solo Royal family resided. Built around the 17th century by Sunan Pakubuwono II, with major renovation done around the 18th century by Susuhunan Pakubuwono X. The Keraton building is decked in whites and blues and is another of those exquisite blends of

colonial and Javanese architecture that is so much part of Java. Several named complexes divide the rooms at Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat, each containing its own philosophical meaning and function. Those who wish to gain knowledge of Solo’s historical aspects should put the palace on their destination list. For a more dated look at Solo’s ancient era I visited the complex of Candi temple at the foot of Mt. Lawu, Karanganyar. Candi is a Hindu/ Buddhist temple built during the “Indianized” period between the 7th and 15th centuries. This historical site shows just how much influence other parts of the world had on the development of Java. In this area I let myself breathe the fresh countryside air and splendid views of the Kemuning tea plantation, located in between Candi Sukuh and Candi Seto. After an interesting day, Alila Solo was the accommodation choice for my Solo trip. Currently the tallest hotel in the city, Alila Solo makes good use of the height advantage with the Agra Rooftop Bar on the top of the hotel. I enjoyed my time here at night, drinking good cocktails while listening to music under the stars with the glimmer of city lights. After treating myself to this great culinary experience; Ueno Park became my next destination. Located next to Ueno Station in central Tokyo, the park grounds were originally part of the Kaneiji Temple, which used to be one of the city’s largest and wealthiest family temples of the ruling Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period. It is here that people gather to witness the glory of Sakura (cherry blossom) from the more than 1000 cherry trees lining its central pathway.

entertaining that it is impossible to cover all it has to offer in one day. I did my best however to visit the different parks; namely American Waterfront, Lost River Delta, Port Discovery, Mermaid Lagoon, Arabian Coast and Mysterious Island. The Iconic Mount Fuji is of course not to be missed on this trip. As one of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains” along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku, Mount Fuji is a place of scenic beauty and one of Japan’s historic sites. It was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on 2013. Mount Fuji has inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimages for centuries. It is not hard to see why this conical picture postcard mountain has been the subject of so much spiritual attention.

Now of course it was not a shower of cherry blossom but one of golden autumn leaves. On this day the park was vibrant with street artists, musicians and an eclectic range of individual and unique demonstrations.

There was one more thing to do here in Japan before the end of my trip; to treat my weary body to the hot springs of Kawaguchi Onsen. Almost all hotels around the Kawaguchi region provide this natural hot spring facility. I tried one that sources its water directly from Mount Fuji and my plunge had real rejuvenation value it was truly Japanese experience that will stay with me long after I leave this beautiful country.

a city, Seoul boasts a well-planned tourist-friendly infrastructure that includes designated areas for sightseeing, restaurants, nightlife and hotels. The city has an on going program to promote tourism and has had recent major successes in the worldwide promotion of Korean pop culture. Since the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, Korea has had a great deal of success in promoting its national dishes as well as the countrie’s traditional culture. Visitors to Seoul should not miss the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the Kimchi Field Museum. Situated in the Gangnam district, the museum was originally opened in 1988 to promote Kimchi to international tourists arriving for the Seoul Olympics. Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made from fermented vegetables and spices and has become very popular across the world in recent years. The

museum illustrates how Kimchi is made and stored and explains the various types from different areas of the country. During my visit, I got the chance to taste some of the different varieties of Kimchi and take part in a program that taught me how to make my own. This was an interesting experience and I found it most enjoyable to apply my knowledge when I got back home. The COEX Mall where the Kimchi Museum located is actually a great place to explore as well. This place boasts a claim to be the largest underground shopping mall in Asia. For those who like shopping malls this is truly a cavernous shopping experience. My next destination in Seoul was one of the trademark visuals of Korea; Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul’s grandest Joseon Dynasty-era palace. Built in 1395 it was the seat of power until destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasion of 1592 to 1598 and palace buildings were not restored until the early 20th century during the reign of King Gojongbn.

Fortunately many of the palace’s original artefacts have survived through the centuries despite the fire and are now housed in what has become the Joseon Palace Museum along with the Korean Folk Museum. During my short but sweet visit to Seoul I took a wander through the City’s Itaewon district. This is a unique part of Seoul known for its restaurants and stalls. The area teams with people of diverse nationalities and cultures. It is the city’s first Special Tourism District and is a popular hub for shoppers and those wanting to sample different international cuisine. I leave Seoul with a satisfied state of mind but anxious to return and discover more of this intriguing city with its long and at times violent history. THERE ARE MANY GREAT DESTINATIONS TO EXPLORE HERE, PERTH AND MELBOURNE IN PARTICULAR ARE TWO OF THE RECOMMENDED CITIES TO VISIT DOWN UNDER DURING THE SUMMER AND WE’LL TELL YOU WHY IN THIS ARTICLE.

P

erth is a marvellous city, yet it is often an overlooked travel destination for those heading to Australia. Possessing a sophisticated and cosmopolitan atmosphere it is also the gateway to many natural attractions within Western Australia - Australia largest state. Less than 20 kilometres off the coast of Perth is Rottnest Island, an island of powdery white beaches, bays and coves lapped by the clear blue hew of the Indian ocean that close to shore supports a magnificent marine environment. Here 135 species of tropical fish are to be found through 20 species of coral. This is a diving and snorkelling paradise where 13

78

shipwrecks are marvellous exploration sites. Bike riding and swimming and sightseeing also make this largely unspoiled island paradise a great summer destination. Fremantle is the port city of Perth and is here that Italian and other immigrants to Australia have turned the streets into a feast of cosmopolitan restaurants for casual or fine dining and cafes of continental flavour in this very community based city. Fremantle worth more than a days visit for its sense carnival and deep-rooted colonial history.

My second destination of this grand summer trip is Melbourne. In 2011 it was voted the ‘World’s Most Liveable City’ and is touted, especially by Melbournians, as the best all round city in Australia. For a good sniff of country air I visited the Yarra Valley, just an hour’s drive from Melbourne. This charming destination will take visitors through rolling hills strung with vines, secluded natural valleys set against blue mountain backdrops, lush greenery and pastures and past towering trees and pristine rivers to Australia’s most English aspects. While in Melbourne I took the opportunity to drive to Phillip Island, located less than two hours drive from the city. Named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, Phillip Island is a popular weekend tourist getaway, especially during summer months. The island is also known for its fascinating spectacle of the ‘Little Penguin’

walk. This is perhaps one of Australia’s most popular natural attractions as these small penguins return from a day’s fishing at sunset to march together up the beach to their roosts. I was also able to take a great sightseeing walk to Cape Woolamai. My summer trip to Australia was a real blast. The fresh air and natural splendour has enticed me to make another visit soon. At least one of these two cities should be on your trip list next summer. Book AirAsia to get the best ticket price for direct flights to Australia. For more info click on www.airasia.com

Tehran:

The Bustling Middle East Capital

80

TropicaLife.net

AS THE CAPITAL OF IRAN, TEHRAN IS A BUSTLING METROPOLIS WITH A POPULATION OF AROUND 14 MILLION. THIS DYNAMIC CITY BUILT ON THE FOOT OF THE ALBORZ MOUNTAIN AND SERVES AS AN EXOTIC DESTINATION FOR TRAVELLERS LOOKING FOR A BIT OF ADVENTURE WHILE ON HOLIDAY. HERE ALL THE ELEMENTS OF A GREAT MIDDLE-EAST SETTLEMENT CONVERGE, FROM BAZAARS TO MUSEUMS AND PALACES.

Of

all the strictness of Middle-Esatern religious culture, Tehran is considered as one of the most liberal cities. Students from all over the country have gravitated to Tehran and its universities. This eager youth with their liberal views have helped to soften an intransigence to change of the countrie’s ruling powers. In the last couple of years Iran has begun to attract tourists from all parts of the world. Some to revel in the city’s new found adventures in art and theatre and others to explore the history of the Old Persian Empire. Things are starting to happen in Tehran and while the southern parts are have still a way to go the northern districts are prosperous, modern, cosmopolitan and expensive. Visitors to this city should not miss the Grand Bazaar located on Arg Square. This is an historical market built with majestic Persian architecture; the root of this bazaar can be traced back to the 4,000 BCE. The site is split into several corridors over 10 km in length, each specializing in different types of goods and have several entrances with Sabze Meydan as the main one. In addition to the traditional goods on sale, such as carpet and indigenous clothing, one can also find jewellery and watches. Visitors here are encouraged to haggle for goods so a bit of revision on Persian numbers will help to get the best prices. For a bit of history and cultural reference, the Azadi monument is well worth a visit. This longstanding

symbol of Tehran was constructed to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire and now combines the finest elements of Sassanid and Islamic architecture. There is a museum located on the basement area of this monument, right under the main vault. For history enthusiasts wishing to learn the fascinating backstory of Tehran, there are a couple of must-visit spot in the capital. First, the Golestan Palace a.k.a Rose Garden Citadel, it is one of the most visited places in Tehran, in which the Qajars’ royal family once resided. Its garden is an oasis of coolness and peace in the middle of the city’s choking smog and manic street activities. The second of these sites is the National museum of Tehran. Here precious and significant artefacts from ancient Persia (dating back to 5000BC) and post-Islamic Persia (800AD) are preserved. The museum building itself is a masterpiece on its own right, built in Iran’s golden era of the 1930s. One of the best hotels in Tehran is Parsian Azadi Hotel, providing a 5-star service and located close to some of the city’s historical sites. The hotel offers 483 rooms including Presidential suites, duplex and double rooms. For those who wish to experience this city, AirAsia X now provides a direct flight to the Iranian capital of Tehran from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. More info visit www.airasia.com TropicaLife.net

Latin Grilled Goodness AT PAPAGAYO BRAZILLIAN BBQ CHURRASCARIA Seated on the side of Petitenget area, a couple of meters before the entrance to Batubelig, Papagayo is one of the recommended culinary selections in Seminyak. Featuring two dining spaces - cozy indoor and scenic outdoor. There is a view here of uninterrupted paddy fields and the restaurant aims to appeal to all guests by providing a comfortable yet unique dining experience.

H

eralding itself as a Brazillian BBQ Churrascaria, Papagayo wants to introduce the South American ways of eating to Bali’s visitors and culinary enthusiasts; Churrascaria, or often referred as Churrasco, actually translates to ‘Barbecue’. There is a unique cultural service method for this fare. Passadores (meat waiters) come to the table with knives and a skewer, on which are speared certain kinds of meat. In Papagayo, this service becomes an experience for diners. The restaurant ‘churrasco’ menu offers 11 different kinds of grilled meat, from pork ribs, pork belly, sausage, to the special ‘picanha’, which is a prime cut of mouth-watering beef sirloin, best savored hot. This satisfying

Traditional Chic Treat AT BATIK RESTAURANT BAR In love with Batik? You’ll love the Batik Restaurant Bar then. Here great Southeast Asian food is served while guests are fascinatingly informed of the traditional art of Batik.

As

one of the newest additions to Seminyak, Batik presents a sensual selection of Asian dishes from its delightfully decorated colonial building. The décor, fittings and fixtures are head turning while the atmosphere here is one of colourful joy. The combination of good light, colour and sensational food puts Batik at the top of its game. The open food bar focuses on Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai dishes. Gluten free and vegetarian friendly dishes are available and exciting. Throughout the restaurants three dining areas there are displays of batik, the tools and products required for this art and general explanations of the batik process. The restaurant produces batik fabric at its own factory in Solo where they process fabric for soft furnishings, and garments including the restaurants own uniforms. They work together with the local artists in order to get inspired, learn from them and preserve the heritage.

For an appetizer, a delicious Thai pandan chicken or Vietnamese shrimp pancake is recommended for those seeking light bites to accompany a relaxing afternoon. This pancake has an Asian twist. It is more savoury than sweet and is an ideal base for its filling. A full range of delicious cocktails and wines are available here to enjoy with a meal. My suggestion for dessert is the beautifully presented dadar gulung; one of Indonesian’s favourite sweets. Good food, good wine, lovely décor and entertaining information make this restaurant a must-visit.

he indoor spa area is located close to the hotel’s lobby and has 3 single treatment rooms, 2 double treatment rooms, 2 spa suites, 1 beauty room, hair salon, wet area, detox/oxygen room, bar and retail area. After being welcomed by the receptionist at the spa’s lobby a therapist escorted me to the treatment room. I chose the 90-minute Zen Balancing treatment, a treatment inspired by wushu martial arts. The first session is a little unusual as it involves a 5-minute session of wushu breathing and stretching exercises within a small area adjacent to the treatment room. It is actually a series movement that involves sweeping, twisting and stretching of the limbs. The purpose of this session is to warm up the body and open channels for a “chi” energy flow.

Next, the warm oil is poured onto the body and a therapist begins the Zen balancing treatment. A piece of warmed bamboo is rolled along the body in gentle rhythmic strokes and so becomes a medium of the therapist’s hands to provide an effective massaging of pressure point of key bodily areas.. This action is believed to promote circulation, aid in lymphatic drainage, and deliver a deep sense of relaxation. This treatment was a relaxing experience that resulted in the complete eliminating of stiffness and sore muscles.

Here sophisticated Balinese massages and skincare treatments use a range of London-based ESPA along with quality local products.

During my visit, I was treated to a combination of fine treatments. These consisted of a 1-hour Mepijet Massage followed by 1-hour Skin Purifying Facial. The Mepijet massage began with a pleasant foot ritual bath that was followed by aromatic sensory test to determine what my body needs were at the time. The massage itself combined the best of Javanese and Balinese techniques and was performed by an experienced therapist who applied gentle pressure with firm movements that comforted my body throughout. The result was a release of muscle tension

and an improvement of my circulation. A Skin Purifying facial was next and this was staggered through several phases with applications of advanced technology and quality products. I felt this to be a most effective treatment as it produced facial skin glows and left me feeling radiantly clean and healthy. The session ended with a refreshing drink in the spa’s tranquil relaxation chamber where I was able to comfortably relax while enjoying a scene of river flow through the green of the valley. My masseur began the session using long and medium body strokes. Next followed a chocolate scrub where warm chocolate and sea salt was used to exfoliate the skin. After a good

The antioxidant properties contained in the chocolate are beneficial to the skin and produce an overall sense of well being while the sweet aroma of chocolate has the power to deliver a sense of calmness. Timeless Grand Venue of Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

F

rom the beginning, Garuda Wisnu Kencana was always intended to be something grand. The project was initiated back in 1992, with the vision of developing it to become one of Bali’s iconic tourist destinations. One of the founders of GWK Foundation, Mr. I Nyoman Nuarta is also the inspirer behind the venue’s landmark statue. He began to realize his concept by developing the existing limestone hill through a combined land art approach and a modern architectural landscape. This is a statement of his strong idealism and a wish to align harmony between human activity, the environment and God.

92

TropicaLife.net

The main attraction of GWK Cultural Park is the towering figure of Garuda Wisnu that is intentionally one of the tallest and largest of modern day sculptures. Combined with its pedestal, the statue is planned to reach 126 meters in height with a wingspan 64 meters. The daunting task of assembling such a sculpture was entrusted to one of Indonesia’s most reputable sculptors, I Nyoman Nuarta. He is responsible for the creation of this large-scaled monument that illustrates the Hindu God Wisnu on the back of the mythical Garuda bird. The word ‘Kencana’ refers to gold layering some core parts of the statue.

gallery

As a 21st century alternative of ‘artificial tourist infrastructure’, GWK Cultural Park is currently developing into a one-stop venue that covers exhibitions, events and amusement attractions as well as becoming the information and communication forum for national and international cultures. The wonderful site will soon own one of the largest artistic masterpiece ever created in Indonesia to reflect the strong values of one of the nation’s inherent local cultures. GWK Cultural Park is now in the process of building new megaproject Icon of Civilization where Vishnu is riding Mythical Garuda standing on top of the pedestal that can be seen as the tallest structure from the Ungasan Hill.

GWK statue is planned to stand on the highest spot of Southern Bali and consists of two main parts; the main statue, which consists of approximately 3000 tons of copper and several other smaller statues such as the crown and Garuda’s accessories that will be coated with gold mosaic. The second part of this project is a 30,000-square-meter pedestal built on 10,000 square metres of land. Facilities inside the pedestal will include a multifunction ballroom to be utilized for international conferences as well as galleries to exhibit Indonesian cultural art creations.
