STATE OF RELIGION
San Joaquin County is riddled with houses of worship. Within the confines of the county, wee see people from all walks of life, a true testament of diversity in this melting pot of a community. And many of these people practice different religions. We set out on an expedition to explore the different religious fabrics of our county and learn what we could about the varying belief systems.

It’s an exciting time for University of the Pacific (UOP) Men’s Basketball. After two years of probation and imposed scholarship limits following a NCAA scandal in 2016, the team has paid its dues, and Damon Stoudamire—in his third season with the team—is ready to make his mark. The former NBA star is gearing up for his first off-probation season with the UOP Men’s Basketball team, and he’s not holding back. By Nora Heston Tarte

There are a wide variety of Asian restaurants to choose from in San Joaquin County, but there are also a wide variety of Asian cuisines to try. Picture this: It’s date night. You want Thai food, but your date wants Chinese. Solution? Get Both. When you go to Midori Fine Asian Cuisine in Tracy, you won’t have to choose. And that’s exactly how Owner Harry Yu wanted it when he opened the new restaurant in August. By Nicole Dunlap

GIVING THANKS & GIVING BACK This time of year marks two things for me: the importance of both giving thanks for what I have and the ability to give back. Every November, we sit
"It isn’t what you have in your pocket that makes you thankful, but what you have in your heart.” —Anonymous
around the dinner table on Thanksgiving and list what we are thankful for. I’m fortunate my list is long. I have a family who supports me, two dogs that love me, and a community that I’m proud to call my own. Everyday is a day to be thankful, but this time of year I’m extra cognizant of just all of the good that does exist in our world, and how lucky I am to have so much good in my own life. With that thankfulness, there comes a responsibility to help others around me. While I am fortunate for what I have, there are others around me that are less fortunate. Year round I make efforts to give back to the community that supports my business and me, the community that rallies around this magazine and gives us a place to call home. November, especially, is a time to make additional efforts, to give a little extra to those that may be struggling this holiday season. Luckily, San Joaquin Magazine is brimming with opportunities to give back, to help our neighbors in their times of need. If I ever needed a helping hand, I know these people would be there to lend one to me, and I strive to be the same kind of neighbor to them. Looking for an opportunity to share the wealth this holiday season? Give your time while also giving back to yourself and participate in the Run & Walk Against Hunger, presented by the Michael David Family Foundation and benefitting the Emergency Food Bank, an organization that gives more than 2,000 turkeys to families in need each year. Your contribution doesn’t have to come on Thanksgiving Day either. This month organizations are ramping up efforts for the holiday season. Donate goods to the Salvation Army, drop canned food at a local food pantry, walk dogs at the animal shelter, or donate money to any worthy cause you feel passionate about. It can be as simple as giving toys to Toys for Tots or passing out old coats and blankets to the homeless community. Whatever you decide to do—big or small—it doesn’t matter. But I do urge you to do something, anything, to help this wonderful community.

LAST THOUGHTS APPRECIATING DIVERSITY We are lucky to live in a diverse community, made up of different cultures, languages, and religions. This month we explore the many dynamic religions represented in the region, and the people behind them. What we’ve learned is each religion has more in common with the next one than it does to set it apart.
#SIDEPIECE Speaking of Thanksgiving, we can’t sidestep the whole Thanksgiving dinner topic. In this month’s On the Side feature, we present San Joaquinians with a lineup of delectable side dishes available for Thanksgiving Day from local businesses. Dress up your dinner table with any of these catered items from favorites like Midgley’s and Tin Roof BBQ.

READY FOR AN UPROAR THE UOP TIGERS ARE READY TO SHOW SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY WHAT THEY'VE GOT! BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D
DAN HOOD
It’s an exciting time for University of the Pacific (UOP) Men’s Basketball.
Damon Stoudamire
www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
After two years of probation and imposed scholarship limits following a NCAA scandal in 2016, the team has paid its dues, and Damon Stoudamire—in his third season with the team—is ready to make his mark. “We’ll have a full roster,” Coach Stoudamire says. “That makes a big difference in how you can play, how you can recruit." After a move to the West Coast Conference three years ago, UOP has struggled against big shots like St. Mary’s College and Brigham Young University. But last year showed promise. Even without full scholarships available, the team pulled out the most wins in a season since joining the WCC with nine in total. Stoudamire calls the WCC one of the more underrated conferences in the association, and with limits placed on his team from decisions made by prior coaching staff, he knew he was coming in at a serious disadvantage. “You’re playing at a deficit if you don’t have a full deck,” he says. This year, however, Stoudamire has a new attitude. After a successful season of recruiting— where Stoudamire says he flourishes—and twelve

scholarships available to the team for the first time in three years, he’s stacking his deck as best he can. “The handcuffs are off so we’re moving forward,” Stoudamire says. “We’ve got the right group.” UOP’s 2019-2020 team is full of players with heart and passion. When it comes to coaching, Stoudamire says he can teach players the game no problem, and while he is capable of instilling passion into players, it’s better for everyone if they step onto the court with that piece of the puzzle already in place. To get the most out of his players he looks for three attributes: play with pride, play with toughness, and compete. “If you do those three things I can help you with the rest,” he says. Stoudamire is also teaching his team to play like underdogs, a trait he says is important for winning in their position. The 5’ 10” former point guard, who spent the majority of his NBA career playing for the Toronto Raptors, is no stranger to thriving in the face of adversity. 26

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2019
“I was the underdog all the time. I always had to prove something,” Stoudamire says, adding he always played with a chip on his shoulder. The benefit is that there is no bull's eye on UOP right now, and Stoudamire says instead of being the hunted, his team will be on the attack. Behind the scenes, Stoudamire is focused on motivation. He wants this team to embrace their position, but he admits he has to get creative to push them. According to Stoudamire, every player on the team is an individual and they learn in different ways and are motivated in different ways. During practices he connects learning opportunities to real life scenarios or even television shows, however he can connect with the young men who play for him. “I use real life experiences,” he says. “I’m a real life guy. I don’t sugar coat anything.” Some of those real life experiences come from Stoudamire’s own breakout career. In 1995 he was selected as the seventh overall draft pick by the Raptors.
That same year, he won rookie of the year. Later he would put in time on the court for the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, and San Antonio Spurs. Coaching, however, is a different beast, but it’s one Stoudamire has had some time to settle into. He’s learned that he has less control on the court, but that he can dictate the game in new ways by motivating his players, observing his team, and making adjustments from the sidelines. Off the court, he’s mentoring the men for success outside of basketball. To every player on his team he asks, what’s next? Whether you have 48 months left or 12 months left, it doesn’t matter. “When the ball stops bouncing, it’s hard,” he says. “What are you going to do next?” SJM CATCH A GAME: UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC Alex G Spanos Center 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton (209) 946-2474 PacificTigers.com

HUMANE HUNTER WHY ONE LODI MAN HUNTS & FISHES TO FILL HIS PLATE
BY NORA HESTON TARTE When he was growing up, Joseph Magnelli spent a couple years living with his uncle in Central Oregon. At his uncle’s house Joseph learned to live off the land, only eating what his uncle hunted, grew, and gathered. “That made a huge impact on me growing up,” Joseph, 32, says. When Joseph moved back to Sonoma County with his parents, his way of life changed because no one else in his family hunted. He fished but really only for stress relief, stopping by a lake in Santa Rosa on his way home from work to unwind. One year ago Joseph decided to get into hunting, and eat everything he killed or caught.
30
|
He saw hunting and fishing as a way to give the middle finger to the factory farming industry, save some money, and get outdoors. Over the year Joseph has killed and cooked wild turkeys, fish, jackrabbits, and other game, all with a bow. He’s still waiting to land that first deer, which can yield 40-50 pounds of meat, enough to feed him and his wife their fill of red meat for a year. The ultimate goal is to hunt and fish enough to stop buying meat from the grocery store. As a result he says he’s supporting animal rights, which many non-hunters don’t understand. “Either way you do it animals are going to die from what you’re eating,” Joseph explains.
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2019
By hunting for his own food, Joseph is acting humanely—hunting animals that have lived full lives in the great outdoors and not ones kept in cages on a farm somewhere. Joseph limits waste by using every part of the animal he can. He narrowly chose photography over culinary school and he still has an appreciation for the skill set. He knows how to properly cook gamey meats and use the bones, gizzards, and organs for meals. He even vows to catch a coyote one day and see what he can do with that. “It helps because I understand food,” he says. “When you know how to cook you kind of have an understanding of how to use every single part of the animal.” SJM

READY to WORK
LOCAL NONPROFIT HELPS MEN GET OFF THE STREET AND INTO JOBS BY FAITH LEWIS In June and July of 2019, only 5.5 percent of the individuals who left emergency housing (such as homeless shelters) moved to permanent housing, a dismal statistic for the 2,629 homeless people who live in San Joaquin County, according to the San Joaquin Continuum of Care’s April 2019 Point in Time Count report. As Jon Mendelson, executive director of the private nonprofit Ready to Work, sees it, it isn’t a question of laziness or apathy that has led people to be in this situation. “You can be lazy and homeless just
as much as you can be lazy and have a nine to five,” he points out, adding that “not everyone is offered the same choices in life.” To help bridge the gap in services available in San Joaquin County, Ready for Work was started in July of 2018 focusing on helping homeless men—who made up 65 percent of all unsheltered homeless (the 1,071 people not living in temporary housing) in the county as of April 2019. “The goal for Ready to Work is to reduce homelessness in San Joaquin County by providing shelter and services and ultimately linking people to work,” Jon says.
To do this, Ready for Work provides shelter to up to 45 men at a time and offers job training, employment with Ready to Work or one of the organizations they partner with (such as the City of Stockton, Caltrans, Bank of America, and the Downtown Stockton Alliance), and case management and counseling to help teach skills like budgeting, accountability, anger management, and other soft skills needed to secure and keep a job. In order to be considered a graduate of the program, you must complete 60 hours of self-help counseling, save enough to take care of transportation needs, obtain a job outside Ready to Work, and find permanent housing. Of the 127 men who were involved in Ready to Work during its first year (July 2018 to July 2019), 28 percent exited to permanent housing. Another 33 percent were still living at the Ready to Work shelter, and 39 percent had exited the program unsuccessfully or were unaccounted for. While a 28 percent success rate may not seem like much, Jon says when you compare it to the 5.5 percent who leave emergency shelters for permanent housing, the program is clearly working. And there’s plenty of room for more growth and success in the future as Jon Ready for Work provides hopes to add partnerships with more local shelter and offers job businesses to hire the men in the Ready to training, employment with Work program, increase Ready to Work work Ready to Work or one of crews to employ more people, and expand to the organizations they offer similar services for women in need. SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND PECK’S JEWELERS SPECIALIZES IN ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND MORE BY NICOLE DUNLAP / D Are you ready to propose to that special someone? Looking for the perfect custom engagement ring? Something that shines in the light? Beautiful diamonds and gems customized to leave her in awe? With over 70 years in business, Peck’s Jewelers offers ring sales from top brands and customization in the heart of Stockton, and, sometimes, even help with the proposal. Peck’s is owned and operated by Jeff Fields, a Graduate Gemologist (G.G.), and a Certified Gemologist Appraiser (C.G.A.). Fields is a third-generation jeweler taking over the business after his father and, before that, his grandfather. Jeff goes above and beyond to bring magic to any proposal, and add a little flair with custom designs. Jeff says seeing the smile on the bride’s
face makes it all worth it, which is perhaps why he’s even gone as far as to personally deliver an engagement ring to the bride himself. “I went to her house and presented the ring to her. [The groom] called her right after,” Jeff says. While delivery service is not a usual part of the deal, Peck’s is committed to helping happy brides get married, and grooms start off their journey to marriage on the right foot. The rings, and other jewelry, Peck’s carries are varied so there is always a piece to fit everyone’s desires, such as sparklers from the Coast Diamond Bridal collection. In addition to stocking many brands, Peck’s also manufactures and custom designs their own jewelry, which saves the client more money in the long run and ensures future

Peck’s was founded in 1945 and is the only third generation jeweler in the San Joaquin Valley. With 74 years in business, Peck’s is the longest running independent jewelry store in Stockton.

THE STATE OF
Religion  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D
DAN HOOD
San Joaquin County is riddled with houses of worship. Within the confines of the county, we see people from all walks of life, a true testament of diversity in this melting pot of a community. And many of these people practice different religions. From Hinduism to Buddhism to Catholicism, there is a place for everyone. As different as these religions are, from their languages to their customs and garb, it’s surprising just how similar each one is to the next, as well. We set out on an expedition to explore the different religious fabrics of our county and learn what we could about the varying belief systems. What we found is that deep down every religion is about love, and every group is working toward peace. Every one is giving back to its community, and every house of religion supports and respects the next.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2019
Father Panagiotis Sotiras (Father Pete) Pastor, St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church
What do you think are the unifying qualities of global religion?
How we treat others, how we value people, the understanding that all people are created by God.
What does “peace on earth” mean to you?
It’s something that God desires. God wants to unify people; God wants to overcome the hatred and divisions that exist, but its up to human beings to work with God to make that a reality. God is the source of love and peace and humans are called to work with Him by showing compassion, mercy, and not judging others. It means to be able to respond to hatred with love and to be able to respond to the darkness with light.
What does being a good Christian mean to you?
First it’s important to remember that no one is perfect, and that includes Christians because only Jesus Christ is perfect and sinless. Having said that, being a good Christian means that you take your relationship with Christ seriously. It means making God a priority in your life and striving to make His teachings a way of life. It means to share the love of God with others and to remember that our relationship with God is intertwined with how we treat others. Love of God and love of neighbor go hand in hand. Being a good Christian means having humility and not judging others or being self-righteous and holier than thou.

Reverend Yukiko Motoyoshi Resident Minister Buddhist Church of Stockton
What do you most want people to know about your religion?
Buddhism is not a mystical or exotic religion, but it is an universal religion directly related to everyday livings of all people at all times.
What do you think are the unifying qualities of global religion?
I believe all religious faith expound kindness and compassion to all people.
What does “peace on earth mean to you?
Respecting each other regardless of race, faith, ideology, and gender.
How is your religion similar to others?
Like other religious faith, we, Buddhist, aim for the betterment of one's life and lives of others through faith and practices.
What does being a good Buddhist mean to you?
Truly understanding the Buddhist teachings (such as impermanence, interdependence, and non-self) and implementing them into our daily lives; that is respecting all living and non-livings beings, being kind, compassionate, and tolerant of others, and being responsible of one's own life instead of relying on superstitions and incantations.

Rabbi Jason Gwasdoff Temple Israel Stockton
How is your religion similar to others?
Judaism shares so much in common with other religions, especially the other monotheistic faiths (Christianity and Islam) that have evolved from the same roots. Like these other faiths we take inspiration and guidance from the biblical canon, and we strive to bring order and structure to a chaotic world. We also strive to give meaning to human existence and stress the importance of giving of oneself to others.
What does being a good Jew mean to you?
If you are a traditional observant Jew there is a major focus on observing the 613 commandments of the Torah, especially the ones that deal with daily and weekly observances like the dietary laws, and the strict observance of the Sabbath. For less observant Jews the focus is more on the ethical laws of the Torah. Since I am a Reform Jew (a liberal and progressive expression of Judaism) my litmus test for being a "good Jew" is someone who embodies, in belief and in action, the Biblical idea that all human beings are created in the image of God. That means showing utmost respect and uplifting the dignity of every human being.
What do you most want people to know about your religion?
Judaism encompasses an ancient tradition that has evolved and changed through the millennial to meet the challenges of a world that is in constant flux. While the essential core of our faith has not changed, we have survived as a people and as a faith because of this ability to evolve. Our sacred scripture, the Torah, is a living document because through interpretation it speaks to the issues that face every generation.

Imaam Mohammad ElFarra Islamic Center Of Manteca
What do you most want people to know about your religion? It is a religion of peace where kindness, good character, patience, generosity, honoring your neighbor, and loving for the people what you love for yourself are stressed.
What does “peace on earth” mean to you?
Peace on earth to me will only be achieved when humans submit to God’s will and not to their desires, whims, lusts, intellect, and opinions. I say this because it is when we submit to those inner desires and thoughts that we act in a way that usually leads to some type of violence.
How is your religion similar to others?
Islam is similar to others in what you would consider the basic commands to do good to your neighbor and the needy and the less fortunate, to be good to one’s parents and honor them, to forgive and not hold grudges, etc. I would say that Islam is unique with respect to its monotheism even above other claimed monotheistic religions because only in Islam is Allah (the One and Only worthy of worship) worshiped alone without any partners, without any sons or daughters or parents, and without any intercessors needed between the individual and their creator.
What does being a good Muslim mean to you?
Being a good Muslim to me means that one believes in the oneness of God with respect to worshiping him only, with respect to his Lordship over the heavens and the earth, and with respect to his names and his attributes that He gave himself.

Scott A. Jensen
President of the Stockton California Stake The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
What does being a good member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mean to you?
To me, it is ultimately about being a follower of Jesus Christ to the best of my ability. He is a personal God. It means to work each day to admit to and repent of my wrongs and to seek to become better in my various roles as a husband, a father, an employee, a supervisor, a friend, a community member, etc.
How is your religion similar to others?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world and the need to follow His teachings. Similar to most, if not all religions, the purpose of the church is to teach morality and to encourage and assist all individuals in finding peace in this life and joy in the eternal world to come.
What does “peace on earth” mean to you?
To me, “peace on earth” ultimately means a state in which mutual respect and kindness is shared by all. As we seek the benefit of others as much as our own, we will ultimately achieve a state of true peace. Uniform beliefs—everyone believing the same things—are not necessary for such peace to occur.
What do you think are the unifying qualities of global religion?
Two of the best unifying qualities that we share are those of being outwardoriented and believing we are brothers and sisters in one human family. This trait assists us in encouraging social engagement and civic duty.

Pastor Mark Price St. Paul Lutheran Church
What do you most want people to know about your religion? That it’s about love.
What does “peace on earth” mean to you?
A: Peace is harmony not melody. Melody everybody has to play the same note at the exact same time with the exact same rhythm. Harmony says we can play different notes at different rhythms at the same time and this gives the song depth and richness. Peace is harmony not melody. Peace does not demand uniformity or conformity. Peace says everybody has the same access to resources.
How is your religion similar to others?
It seeks truth. It seeks peace. It seeks meaning and purpose. I really do think that’s what we share with others.
What does being a good Lutheran mean to you? We see ourselves as part of the Catholic (but not Roman Catholic) side of the Christian spectrum of traditions. Being a good Lutheran means going to mass or worship every Sunday and doing an act of charity on a regular basis. It’s a way of living. To live as a child of God and to see that the other is also a child of God. It means you’re my sister. It means that I’m going to work for those things that enhance your life. I’m going to see to your protection and that which benefits you. I’m going to consider your needs ahead of my own.

EMBRACE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING  BY NORA HESTON TARTE www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
For decades schools have focused on cognitive and physical milestones in early education, but over the past five years there has been a nationwide shift toward including social emotional learning in early education, too. The San Joaquin County Office of Education together with school districts throughout the county have embraced this new approach to learning, bringing social emotional learning tech-

kids niques into the classroom, the community, and the home. “The main goal really is to promote that sense of belonging for children and to give them the tools that they need to navigate through peer relationships and adult relationships successfully,” says Jamie Baiocchi, division director for early education and support at SJCOE. It all happens through the Center for Social Emotional Foundations in Early Learning, or CSEFEL, a program that started out of the University of Illinois. SJCOE first got involved when San Joaquin was selected as one of 17 counties in California to receive an early learning challenge grant that allowed for social emotional learning training to be offered to early educators through a nine month training program for educators. Primarily, social emotional learning is practiced in early education programs in the county including preschools and family-owned centers, as well as Head Start San Joaquin, which serves infants to children age five. “Research identifies that social/emotional skills are a key indicator of future school and life success,” says Leticia Sida, program director for Head Start San Joaquin. “By teaching children to regulate emotions and learn how to interact and engage with others socially helps them successfully learn other skills related to academics.” The core of the program is teaching children how to build healthy relationships with others, manage and identify their emotions, and focus on being a good friend. thinking by using positive reinforcement to coach good behaviors in the classroom. For example, a teacher will look for small victories or acts of kindness that a child demonstrates in class such as picking up after themselves. Instead of using phrases that start with “don’t” or over-reacting to a child’s poor behaviors, the teacher will focus on the positive. When this is taught young—in the first five years of life—children tend to take those lessons with them into adulthood, and parents often notice similar behaviors coming home. “When children get positive feedback… it is something that naturally continues to sustain itself. The older they get the harder it is for them to establish those social skills,” Jamie says. “It really changes the whole approach

to learning,” It’s all explained through a pyramid that focuses on the basic foundations of social emotional learning as well as interventions that may help children who struggle. The pyramid starts with nurturing and responsive relationships and then ascends into high quality supportive environments, targeted social emotional supports, and intensive intervention. While the program focuses on preschool and early learning classrooms, transitional-kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten teachers are taking notice, and SJCOE is starting to explore what social-emotional learning looks like in an elementary school setting and beyond. Kindergarten teachers who receive children from a classroom where social emotional learning was taught see the difference, and while cognitive skills—numbers, colors, shapes, etc.—are important, having children come in emotionally prepared to interact with 25+ other students makes a huge difference. “We intentionally balance rigor and high academic expectations with the importance of building positive relationships and school culture,” says Sean Morrill, the division director of County Operated Schools and Programs at SJCOE. Schools in San Joaquin County are continuing to emphasize the importance of social emotional learning through programs like Character Counts and Positive Behavioral Support for older students. “It’s really important for our elementary school systems to implement programs that reinforce what we do in the early years,” Jamie says. At home the best way for parents to continue social emotional learning is to be engaged in their child’s education. With technology even working parents can keep in contact with

teachers to become active participants in their child’s education. Most importantly, parents can model the same ideals at home and place emphasis on social emotional learning by teaching kids how to talk about their feelings, as well as compassion for others. The result is classrooms full of social kids with less behavioral issues; it is a world filled with successful adults better equipped to socialize with others. SJM

BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Discover the best of Santa Rosa as you dine your way through the city. When the 2017 wildfires hit Santa Rosa, they decimated acres of land on the
outskirts of town. But these fires didn’t come down from the hills—leaving the historic downtown in tact. In fact, while the farmlands have been rebuilding, Downtown Santa Rosa has continued to grow, thriving with a vibrant urban community filled with restaurants and watering holes. Nearby wineries trickle down from Sonoma County, filling Santa Rosa’s more rural areas with happenings farther from the city center, but fully worth the drive. Discover the best of Santa Rosa as you dine your way through the city, with everything from small plates at New American restaurants to Indian cuisine in a contemporary setting. And the nightlife is nothing to shy away from either. Read on for our tips on exploring the Northern California city during one of its best seasons—fall.

FOOD, FOOD, & MORE FOOD
Breakfast
Dierks Parkside Café offers a traditional but award-winning breakfast. The casual stop looks like an easy diner, but the food is more than meets the eye. Start your meal with Grandma Dierk’s Pull-a-Parts, a fried dough dusted with cinnamon and sugar that resembles a donut, and then dive in to any of the mainstays from buttermilk pancakes to buildyour-own omelets. For something slightly different, order up the Louisiana Hash (Yukon potato, jalapeño, onion, mushroom, eggs, bacon, and cheddar) or Warm Poached Egg Salad (two poached eggs on a bed of local mixed greens, chopped bacon, fresh herbs, potatoes, croutons, and tomatoes with herb dressing). 404 Santa Rosa Ave. The Spinster Sisters also offers a hearty breakfast, but this one strays from the traditional
diner menu. The offerings rotate so there is no guarantee what you’ll be grubbing when you stop in but samples include granola waffles topped with maple-agave syrup; a burrata made with apricot mostarda, Prosciutto di Parma, arugula, and grilled country bread; and a signature scramble featuring farm eggs, bacon, zucchini, crimini mushrooms, caramelized onions, Skyhill goat cheese, and herbs. 401 S. A St.
PERCH + PLOW
Lunch
While visiting Santa Rosa, make time for a lunch at Bollywood Bar & Clay Oven, an eatery located in the old courthouse square that blends authentic Indian cuisine served in pots with a modern twist. For lunch guests enjoy a traditional lunch box—with foods made fresh with Sonoma farms produce and spices imported from a village in India—with four containers stacked

atop one another. Open each to discover naan, rice, a side dish selected by the chef, and a main course on the bottom. Come back by in the evening to enjoy the creative, craft libations made with homemade bitters, creative garnishes, and an array of flavorful ingredients. 535 4th St. Just outside of Santa Rosa in Guerneville sits Korbel Champagne Cellars, a place you should definitely stop to taste—but more on that later. While you’re there, either before or after (several) champagne toasts and an enlightening tour, stop into the Korbel Bistro for perhaps one of the best sandwiches you’ll ever taste. Stacks of fresh meat and veggies soak into the fresh-baked bread. Pair it with a sparkling beverage of your choice and enjoy it either at the counter or outside beneath the towering redwoods the region is known for. 13250 River Rd., Guerneville
Snacks/Dinner
If you’re looking for New American cuisine, Santa Rosa’s The Spinster Sisters stands out. It’s perfect as a pre-dinner or dinner spot. Stop in for a selection of small plates perfect for sharing with friends and pairing with small lot wines made primarily by woman winemakers. While the dinner menu rotates just as the breakfast menu does, the charcuterie plates seem to be a mainstay. If you want to try as many restaurants as you can—and we think you should—this is a good way to sample one locale before committing to dinner elsewhere. Of course if you decide to stay, you’ll be able to choose from menu items such as roasted bone marrow made with parsley, capers, pickled mustard seed, and served with grilled bread; ricotta gnocchi finished with blistered cherry tomatoes, basil, and Parmesan; or beef tongue sliders stacked with grilled tomato and
BOLLYWOOD BAR & CLAY OVEN

complimented with extra virgin olive oil aioli. For lighter fare, try a salad. The grilled peach dish made with mixed lettuces, almonds, Parmesan, and drizzled fig-balsamic vinaigrette is unique. If you skipped the full meal at Spinster Sisters (or honestly even if you didn’t) make your next stop Perch + Plow. This downtown gem boasts farm-to-table meals and small plates so you can keep grubbing all night long. Pair your meal with a creative cocktail with fun flair. The Drop it Like it’s Hot—a vodka based sipper made with Charbay blood orange vodka, ancho reyes, pineapple, pineapple/habanero shrub, orange juice, and lemon—is just one example of a winning cocktail created by the resident mixologist and bar manager Alec Vlastnik. The best way to sample the bounty, however, is with a cocktail flight, but you may want to share it. Try five different creations including the Drop it Like it’s Hot, Moscow Mule, Carbonated Paloma, Post Melo’n, and A Rotating Handle. If you’re going for snacks, order a plate of sweet potato chips served with caramelized onion dip or the gluten-free ceviche served with the same chips and other finishes. Slide into the dinner menu for spectacularly presented plates of grilled octopus served with a chickpea purée and chimichurri pesto or a hangar steak over potato puree, maitaike mushrooms, and mixed vegetables with a black garlic demi glace. Dessert comes in many forms, including cocktail, but we recommend the caramel apple bunuelos—fresh ricotta doughnuts tossed in cinnamon sugar, boasting a spiced apple filling and finished with warm salted caramel sauce. 90 Old Courthouse Sq.

WASH IT DOWN WITH WINE
Head into the hills to explore the area’s best wineries. We already teased you with details of Korbel, and while the deli is amazing, it’s not even the highlight. The Korbel Champagne Cellars tour is a historic one—and it’s in depth. Tour guides teach visitors about the family history behind the sparkling wine giant as you move from one end of the property to the other. There is also a room where various methods of making sparkling wine are demonstrated, including an old racking machine that is no longer used. Ever wonder how those champagne corks get into the bottles? They’ll teach you that, too. At the end of the tour, indulge in some of the wineries’ best sparkling wines, and some you won’t find in stores. Korbel makes white and red wines on site, as well, but they aren’t mass distributed the way its champagne is. There is even a collection of brandies available for purchase, but you can’t taste those here due to liquor laws on site. Trust us though, they are good. 13250 River Rd., Guerneville Finish up your day of wine tasting with a few more stops. Martin Ray

escape away from bold, heavy tastes, and while the sangiovese and pinot noir are impeccable, the orange wine offers something you simply can’t get anywhere else. Ask for a small plate of snacks to enjoy with your line-up before heading out—an array of cheeses, baked goods, and vegetables pairs well. 1301 Cleveland Ave. St. Francis Winery is the last stop on our list. Located on a secluded road within Santa Rosa city limits, the estate is gorgeous from end to end. Enjoy glasses of fruit-driven wine at the expansive indoor bar, or take your drink to go so you can view the grounds. Experts talk of the property’s sustainability as they pour, as well as the young winemakers who are responsible for the rich varietals offered. For the best experience, book a wine and food pairing in the estate dining room where you’ll dive into a seasonal, five-course meal with Chef Trevor Eliason ($85).

SAFARI ADVENTURE
Safari West
One of the biggest draws of Santa Rosa is Safari West, a 400-acre Serengeti-esque estate located in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountain. The animal oasis should never be mistaken for a zoo, instead the owner, Peter Lang, runs a world-class conservation breeding facility that encourages sustainability and education. Guests are invited to stay on site in luxury yurts (complete with heaters, private bathrooms, and front porches) and spend their free time exploring the grounds. Animals on site include rhinoceroses, giraffes, flamingos, and monkeys—to name just a few. The best way to discover the 900 animals spanning 90 species that live on this estate is with an African safari tour. Here a tour guide takes you through the gates to get up close to the animals, sharing insights
and stories along the way. Expert Tip: Grab a can of wine or beer at the small shop before climbing aboard, they welcome beverages—alcoholic or not—on the safari car. While you’re visiting, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served buffet style at the Savannah Café. A selection of meats is cooked to perfection on the wood-fired grill, while trays brimming with comfort food take over the patio. Dine inside or out. 3115 Porter Creek Rd. SJM

BIG BENEFITS OF A
Small
Wedding
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Your wedding day is a BIG celebration, and we don’t blame brides for wanting to include everyone in the festivities, but when that guest list starts to cascade into the triple digits, you may be left seeing nothing more than dollar signs. The fact of the matter is there are plenty of benefits to keeping your wedding small—let’s call it intimate—other than the bill you’ll be presented at the end. In addition to saving some moola, you’ll be happy to hear that brides who have opted for smaller gatherings certainly didn’t regret the decision to not go big.
MORE TIME WITH EACH GUEST
When the reception hall is packed with 300 plus guests, it’s hard to say hello to everyone, let alone spend quality time with the ones you love. After all, it is tradition for the bride and groom to personally greet each guest after the big “I Do,” which can be a time-consuming endeavor with even 100 people in the room. By cutting down the guest list you’ll be able to spend more time chatting with each table, and more moments celebrating with your closest friends and family, too—not swapping niceties with your mom’s great-aunt twice removed.
FEWER HURT FEELINGS
Hear us out—it may seem like a shorter guest list would lend itself to more hurt acquaintances, but that’s not necessarily true. If you have a small family-and-close-friends-only affair then coworkers, distant family, and your besties from high school may not be surprised to miss an invitation. If you invite 500 of your nearest and dearest then those people you leave out may take it a tad personally, especially if you just happened to forget them.

MORE $$$ TO SPLURGE ELSEWHERE
A larger headcount immediately means more money earmarked for essentials like dinner, cake, and décor, which could leave less in the budget for those areas where you’d like to spend more such as photography, videography, or even really cool favors. The reality is, the more people you invite, the more expensive each of those little extras might be, driving up the cost of just about everything.
MORE VENUE OPTIONS
A large party means you’ll have to find a place to host it, which is totally doable in San Joaquin County where vast wineries and event spaces open the doors to large parties, but the number of these oversized venues is less. If you have your eye set on a place with a guest list cap, you’ll have to adhere to it, or find somewhere else to get married. SJM

Five Steps
TO A NO-HITCH ENGAGEMENT PARTY STEP 4. CLUE IN THE BRIDE.
BY NORA HESTON TARTE Congratulations! There’s going to be a wedding! Whether it’s your impending nuptials and you’re throwing your own bash, or one of your best friends is tying the knot, an engagement party is often the first celebration to plan after the question is popped. Before the big boom of the wedding, you’ll want a smaller explosion of fun to celebrate the happy couple. But how do you pull off the affair? We’ve got the tips you need to host a spectacular engagement party.
It’s okay to surprise the bride with details at the big event, but try to clue her into some of the bigger decisions. For example, she may have insight into her family that suggests a specific time of day will work best. Perhaps her grandmother can’t drive at night and her presence is necessary. Also keep in mind how particular your bride is. After all, the day is about her (and her groom). If she doesn’t do well with surprises, let her be more involved in the planning.
STEP 5. CELEBRATE!
Pop the champagne and toast to the happy couple! This is the perfect way to send them off into a whirlwind year of wedding planning. SJM
STEP 1. NAIL THE BASICS.
Answer these few questions first: who will host, when will the party be, and who will be invited. Traditionally, the bride’s parents throw this party, but in modern times it’s not rare for a sibling, best friend, or other family member to step up and take over.
STEP 2. COMMIT TO A THEME.
Once you know how many people will be present, search for a venue. Engagement parties can be held at home—as long as there is enough space to accommodate the guest list—or at a restaurant, event space, or community space. Choose a venue and theme that com-
104
|
plement each other, and then drive that theme home in the décor and invitations. If there are dress code specifics, include that information in the invitation for guests.
STEP 3. PLAN A MENU.
The food should complement the theme. For example, an elegant cocktail party deserves hors d’oeuvres, at a backyard luau barbecue will suffice, a brunch affair needs breakfast goods like pastries and a mimosa bar. You can plan the menu (and theme) around your budget, but make sure there is some food available to guests even if it is just snacks.

Dementia is an umbrella term that can describe a general decline in mental health, especially characterized by memory loss and confusion. When suffering from dementia, it can be difficult to find the right words, problem solve, or plan and organize information. It also leads to disorientation, including getting lost and confused, and can cause depression and mood and personality changes. The symptoms of dementia can differ depending on the underlying disease and often are accompanied by other symptoms that characterize that particular condition. For example, with Alzheimer’s (the most common cause of dementia), a patient will often experience loss of mobility, trouble sleeping, and a tendency to wander off. Oftentimes when dementia is the result of a progressive disease, these symptoms will worsen with time.

Dementia occurs when there is damage to brain cells or the connections among cells in the brain. The symptoms will differ depending on which disease is causing the damage and what part of the brain is damaged. The causes of Alzheimer’s are not fully understood, but the disease is known to lead to certain types of proteins to clump (known as plaques) and tangle in the brain, leading to the common symptoms of short term memory loss, not recognizing close family and friends, and becoming anxious or aggressive. mentia as well. Additionally, some people may suffer from dementia after a stroke, which interrupts blood flow to the brain and can damage the brain cells. Other causes of this type of dementia, known as vascular dementia, can be ministrokes, silent strokes, and other damage to the blood vessels in the brain. It is possible that dementia is being caused by more than one of these conditions. For example, an Alzheimer’s patient who suffers from a stroke may also experience vascular dementia, so it is important to minimize risk factors as much as possible even after the initial onset of dementia symptoms.
WHO IS AT RISK?
Some factors that can lead to the development of dementia can be changed with a healthy lifestyle, but some cannot. Factors like a family history and certain preexisting conditions like Down syndrome can make you more susceptible to developing dementia and the risk increases naturally as you age. Having diabetes may also increase your risk of dementia, so it is important that your blood sugar is controlled as much as possible. Some factors are within your control. Maintaining a healthy diet that includes produce, whole grains, nuts, and seeds; reducing alcohol consumption; controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol; and not smoking, as well as staying active and maintaining an exercise routine, can reduce the risk of dementia. It is also believed that keeping your mind active can help prevent the onset of dementia. Reading, solving puzzles, and playing word games are thought to stimulate the brain and keep the connections between brain cells healthy and active.
CAN DEMENTIA BE TREATED?
How dementia is treated varies from case to case and is largely dependent upon the underlying causes. In cases where dementia is caused by progressive neurological diseases (like Alzheimer’s), there is no cure and treatments cannot stop the progression of dementia, but some drugs have been able to temporarily improve symptoms. Typically, the focus is on managing symptoms, such as depression and mood swings. Medications may be able to help. SJM

Renee Saenz The golden years, lets talk about it! What does that look like and how do we prepare for it? Let’s change the mind set of how we think about transition. We often think about it too late. Have you discussed this with your children or spouse? What do you want out of life in your golden years? Speaking with many seniors I have found that they either don’t have a plan in place or if they do their kids don’t know about it. Proactive vs Reactive. That conversation may entail things like downsizing, long term care, in home care, etc. These are the conversations that have sparked my passion in wanting to bring Senior Seminars to the community. If you would like to continue this conversation, contact me regarding the next Senior Seminar coming this fall near you.

DAN HOOD
There are a wide variety of Asian restaurants to choose from in San Joaquin County, but there are also a wide variety of Asian cuisines to try. Picture this: It’s date night. You want Thai food, but your date wants Chinese. Solution? Get Both. When you go to the new Midori Fine Asian Cuisine in Tracy, you won’t have to choose. This was Owner Harry Yu’s goal when he opened Midori in August. Midori does not just focus on dishes from only one region. “Every country has signature dishes,” says Harry, adding that he of-

local dish ten gets ideas from regions when he travels to Asia every other year. He finds popular dishes over there and brings them back to the valley. When he’s found a good one, he practices cooking them, and then makes adjustments to fit the local flavor. Harry designs every menu item with community in mind. “I’m happy they enjoy the food I make,” says Harry, who also owns Mikasa in Tracy and Lathrop.. Midori’s menu caters to many palates. Holding true to Chinese restaurant traditions, chow mein is definitely on the menu. In this classic dish, diners can choose from a variety of meats including beef, chicken, shrimp, or pork. And don’t forget the veggies including squash, carrots, and bok choy—so delicious you’ll forget you are eating vegetables at all. Experience a variety of texture by requesting your noodles Hong Kong style. These crispy noodles will add just the right amount of crunch to your dish. There are more classics on the menu such as the flavorful General Tso’s Chicken and perfectly cooked pot stickers. Harry likes to throw in a few twists to classic recipes, too, such as the BBQ pork where he uses a special recipe to create his own flavor—one you can’t find just anywhere. Drawing on many regions for inspiration, some dishes have become fan favorites such as the Singapore black pepper prawns and the black pepper beef. “We give a lot of options… [and] try to see what people are looking for,” says Harry. If Thai is what you are craving, you can order red, yellow, or green curry with your meal. Combining both Eastern Chinese cuisine
and Western style, Midori serves a twist on the chicken lettuce wrap perfect for eating alone or sharing. The lettuce wraps require your own assembly; the chicken, lettuce, and sauce are served individually and at the table guests build their own before digging in. Midori will also soon be adding Japanese fare to the menu, a cuisine Harry is no stranger to. He has already
opened four Japanese-inspired restaurants in San Joaquin County after all. In the meantime, there is an assortment of sake selections to try, and next summer guests will be able to enjoy sake tastings and live performances on the back patio. In a nutshell, Midori is a one-stop shop for locals seeking a variety of Asian foods without having to drive to the Bay Area where Harry grew up. After he moved to the Central Valley he saw the need for more variety of Asian foods in the area so people would not have to travel so far for an authentic experience. That’s why he decided to use his skills to start opening Asian restaurants in Tracy. As the gateway to the Bay Area, Harry feels it’s the perfect spot for his businesses so commuters can stop by on their way home for an authentic Asian dish. Plus, locals can enjoy it, too. “We give a lot of options… so [people] don’t have to go the Bay Area,” Harry says. “It’s too expensive out there.” SJM FOR AN ASIAN FOOD EXPERIENCE: Midori Fine Asian Cuisine 2541 Naglee Rd., Tracy (209) 8358882

TWO MEN, TWO PASSIONS, ONE WORTHY CAUSE OPERATION RESTORED WARRIOR WINE BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
Kevin Knutson knows a thing or two about life after military service. As a former marine, Knutson sees first-hand the struggles that veterans battle every day. Mike McCay, a Lodi grape grower and winemaker has a son-in-law that served two tours overseas. So, it comes as no surprise that the two locals teamed up to launch a new wine—Operation Restored Warrior (ORW). Knutson and McCay have known each other for a couple of decades, and when the two sat down one day 138

to talk about the struggles facing our nation’s veterans, a light bulb went off. “Why not make a wine where 100 percent of the proceeds go back to ORW?” McCay said. “It is a cause we are both passionate about and it seemed like a simple way to make an impact on an organization helping to bring stability to veterans across America.” You see, Knutson, who served in the Marine Corp. from 1993 to 1999, was turned on to ORW—a non-profit whose goal is to rescue, rebuild, and restore veterans who feel a sense of hopelessness after service—by a friend. Their motto, “Reaching Warriors…restoring their hearts,” spoke to him. With over 24 soldiers taking their lives each day, and 8,000 lives lost each year, Knutson knew he needed to do
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2019
something. Knutson became involved with the non-profit in 2008 and went through the program himself in 2015. It was such a transformative process; he took on the role of Executive Director later that year. “ORW has had over 1300 combat veterans go through their program,” Knutson said. “We have been fortunate to have a 100 percent success rate!” The partnership between Knutson and McCay led to the release of their inaugural wine in early 2019. A 2017 red wine blend of petite sirah, tempranillo, and zinfandel that is as bold as the courageous men and women it aims to help. After a Southwest Airlines employee got wind of the project, he restored an old metal galley box from a retired plane and turned it into wine storage. McCay filled the box with ORW wine and has it on display in the tasting room. It will be up for silent auction until Veteran’s Day on November 11 when all the proceeds will be donated directly to ORW. Want to taste it yourself? Buy it on-site at McCay Cellars. Your contribution will assist the organization in bringing functionality back into the lives of our nation’s veterans, one bottle of wine at a time. SJM SUPPORT OUR VETERANS: MCCAY CELLARS 100B S. HOLIDAY HOSTESS TIPS HOW TO GUARANTEE A GOOD TIME FOR YOUR GUESTS
PICK A DATE, TIME AND GUEST LIST. This goes without saying, but it’s good to share your intentions with your guests. And keep in mind, if your family has 12 children under the age of five, dinner should be served earlier rather than later. Alternatively, if your guests are the type that stay all night, a later start may be more appropriate. HAVE AN ASSORTMENT OF BEVERAGES.
BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER With the holidays upon us, it’s the perfect time for a refresher course on how to be the ultimate hostess. Whether you are an elaborate entertainer or first-time host, we have a few helpful tips on how to guarantee guests are comfortable and happy in your home. Whether you are planning to host an over-the-top Thanksgiving dinner, or a few friends for a Sunday supper, we’ve got you covered!
ACCEPT HELP. If one of your invitees offers to help, take them up on the offer. After all, people are generally happy to not be hosting, so let them bring something to lessen your load even if it’s as simple as a bottle of wine, appetizer, or dessert.
PLAN YOUR TABLE SCAPE. If you are a creative type, this is where you get to have some fun. Pick a color scheme and go from there. The important thing is to make sure everyone has enough room and that there is ample table space to serve food. Prep, Prep, and Prep Some More. This might be the single most important piece of advice. You will want to do as much ahead of time as possible. Try to make a few dishes that can be completely prepped and cooked later. If you will be using your stove for something like a turkey, utilize other methods for the side dishes. It’s also a great idea to lay out which platters will be used for each dish and label each with a post it note. The cardinal rule? Never cook a dish you haven’t made before! 144

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2019
If you plan to serve wine, open the bottles ahead of time to save time. Keep the whites chilled in the refrigerator until a few minutes before guests sit down. Consider having an assortment of diet and regular soda, sparkling water, and iced tea. And don’t forget the H2O. It is always a good practice to have water carafes on the table so guests can stay hydrated.
RAISE A GLASS. This is where you get to enjoy all your hard work. So, raise a glass, make a toast, and enjoy the company. It’s time to savor the season, the company, and the feast! SJM

TURKEY 3 WAYS Thanksgiving is a season to reflect on our blessings, give back to our community, and celebrate over a meal of comfort food. But if we’re being honest, it’s also about the turkey. The turkey is the centerpiece of your feast, the star of the show, the pièce de résistance. So, whether you bake it, fry it, or smoke it, it has to be perfect.

DIRECTIONS Remove the turkey from the refrigerator one hour before roasting. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Combine one stick of the butter, sage, rosemary, and thyme in a food processor and pulse until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Season the cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper. Fill it with half of the apples, potatoes, onion, and orange. Liberally rub the entire turkey with the herb butter and season the skin with large flake sea salt. Place the remaining vegetables, fruit, and herb sprigs into the bottom of a large roasting pan. Place the turkey on top and roast in the oven for approximately 45 minutes or until the skin becomes golden brown. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees and continue roasting, rubbing the skin with the additional butter throughout the process for an additional 2 to 2 ¼ hours or until an instant read thermometer reaches 160 degrees. Remove from the oven, tent with foil, and let rest for 20 minutes before carving.

Deep Fried Turkey INGREDIENTS 1 10-pound turkey 1 tbsp. salt 1 tbsp. pepper 1 tsp. garlic powder 2 tbsp. poultry rub (sage, parsley, rosemary, and thyme) 3-5 gallons of peanut oil DIRECTIONS Wash the bird inside and out and pat dry. Rub the turkey with the seasoning and dry rub. Allow the bird to sit until it reaches room temperature. Heat the peanut oil in a turkey fryer or a very large stockpot to 350 degrees. Carefully lower the turkey into the hot oil, making sure it is completely submerged. Fry the turkey for three minutes per pound, plus five minutes per bird. Remove the turkey from the oil and drain on paper towels. Pro Tip: use an outdoor burner. Remember, having too much oil can cause a fire. The pot should be no more than ¾ full or the oil will overflow. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Smoked Turkey DIRECTIONS Remove turkey from the refrigerator and let rest for one hour. Meanwhile prepare a charcoal grill or smoker for indirect heat at 275 degrees. Sprinkle wood chips (preferably hickory or apple wood) that have been soaked in cold water for at least four hours and allow them to char before cooking. Place the turkey in a roasting pan fitted with a rack. Brush the entire bird with the oil and season liberally with salt and pepper. Simultaneously mix together the chicken stock, honey, and vinegar. Baste the turkey every 45 minutes until the internal temperature of the thigh registers 165 degrees, for 3 ½ to 4 ½ hours, depending on the size of the bird. Remove the turkey from the grill and let rest for up to 20 minutes before carving.
