@ SJMAG.com BUILDING SAN JOAQUIN BART ROBERTSON TELLS HIS STORY
e’re all in on the holiday season at this point. We sailed through Halloween and now Thanksgiving and Christmas are right in front of us. Lucky for us, the festivities start early around here! And out calendar is proof there is plenty to do to celebrate with your brood. Thanksgiving isn’t my favorite holiday—that happened last month—but it does rank pretty high on the list. I love the time spent with family, my kids and their significant others gathered around the table, as we share stories and dive into a traditional holiday meal. (And need we mention we’ll be trying out one of the appetizer recipes from Suzanne Ledbetter, our food and wine editor, shared in this month’s In Season feature). Regardless of what your Thanksgiving traditions are—football, food, or a trip to the movies—we hope you take the time to spend with family and friends. The other big holiday this month is Veteran’s Day, and we’ve included multiple stories about our local heroes in these pages. Our opener is a man who served during the Vietnam War before making it his professional mission to build up San Joaquin County. Then there are two men who share their stories of service along with more recent adventures with dogs in tow— service dogs that come from a local rescue. While there is so much more to these men than their years of service, we still want to take the time out to thank them for all they’ve risked for us.

LAST THOUGHTS SAY SOMETHING KIND November 13 every year marks World Kindness Day, a moment to make time for saying something to or doing something nice for those around us. Many kids celebrate the occasion in school and may come home with challenges on how they can complete an act of kindness (or several!) on the holiday. Think to yourself, what can you do for someone this November 13?
MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD November marks a time for political participation. In California, registered voters have already received their mail-in ballots, and there are options for in-person voting, too. Regardless of your political affiliation, make sure you get out and cast a vote during the midterm elections. You can register or change your party affiliation at RegisterToVote.ca.gov.

His service, however, tells a different story. “I graduated from college in January of 1967, and I went right into the Navy and Aviation Officer Candidate school,” says Bart. “It took three months to become an officer and two months of ground school, about a year of flying, and I got my wings in the middle of 1968.” He went from being an advanced jet student to being an advanced jet flight instructor. In the past 50 years, his company, Robertson Property Management, has completed tens of thousands of projects and is a major contributor to the Jeff Wright Construction and Engineering Academy on the Lincoln High School campus, where the veteran graduated from in 1962. When Bart got out of the service, he moved his family from San Diego to Stockton, and soon went into business. “David and I started a landscape business. Basically, we were gardeners. After a couple of years, we weren’t making much money at that, so I got a contractor’s license, and we built a house. Then we built a couple more houses. We started in 1976 and by 1980, we were building 900 houses a year.” In the early 1980s, Bart’s partner wanted to build apartments, and it turned out to be a fantastic business decision. In that decade, the duo built an incredible 20,000 apartments in 14 states, although it wasn’t until the 1990s that they began building in the San Joaquin area. “We did some building in Sacramento, some in the Bay Area and Southern California. About every seven or eight years, there’s a big boom, then there’s a big bust. SHORT-EARED OWLS
Pure white plumage and jet-black beaks make identifying these particular swans easy. Every winter, they fly in from the arctic north and settle into waterways throughout the Central Valley, where they live in tight-knit families, fly in v-formations, and chatter loudly amongst themselves.
These medium-sized owls nest in the ground of marshlands and grasslands, making the Delta a prime place for winter sightings. These expressive birds may be visible year-round, but the numbers tend to tick up in winter months.

Woodbridge Road, Staten Island Road near Walnut Grove, and the corner of Desmond and Bruceville roads in the Cosumnes River Preserve are three of the best viewing areas for Sandhill Cranes specifically. From November 4-6, the

community celebrates these North American cranes with a three-day festival. During this time, tours are available and presentations, workshops, art shows, and more related to Sandhill Cranes take over Hutchins Street Square on Saturday and Sunday. Sandhill Cranes, however, are not the only eye-catching birds that come into view this time of year. Read on for a few other winged creatures you can catch in your binoculars on the California Delta this winter, which routinely includes more than 150 species with tens of thousands of shorebirds and hundreds of thousands of waterfowl migrating to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in winter.
SWAINSON'S HAWK This species is considered threatened in the area so there are not typically large numbers of them soaring about, however, while most make their way to Mexico, Central America, and Argentina, a group of these hawks have been known to winter in the nearby Delta.

The Comeback Kids Aren’t Kids at All
SJCOE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAM OFFERS A SECOND CHANCE AT EDUCATION BY NORA HESTON TARTE
T
en percent of adults over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. And while that number is dropping, down from 16% pre-2000s, there are a lot of limitations for people who do not have a diploma from a WASC accredited institution. To bridge that gap, the San Joaquin Office of Education launched Comeback Kids, an accredited program for individuals 18 and over who still need a high school diploma. Comeback Kids started in the 2017-

2018 school year, modeled off of a similar program in Riverside. Originally, there were three teachers within the program. Five years later, the teacher count has grown to 22 with 630 students enrolled in the 20222023 academic year across nine sites from Tracy to Lodi. At Comeback Kids, students aren’t just getting their diploma, they are preparing for their future. The program caters to student needs with flexible hours and career
training. “Every single one has a different need,” Doug McCreath, the SJCOE director who oversees the program, says of students. Some need to complete just a few classes while others need to take the entire four years of instruction. In the end, the diploma received is no different than a diploma from any other regional high school. Buildings are open 8:30 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday so students can come in and meet with their teachers or use the common spaces to study and finish homework as needed. Every student in the program also has to identify a career goal. The teachers then not only work through the high school curriculum, but also get students set up with next steps to college, trade school, or a specific job. Aside from meeting a minimum of twice per week with teachers for an hour, there aren’t a lot of attendance requirements. “That’s why it’s so successful,” Doug says of Comeback Kids. “Because we pace it for [students].” And with an average age of 32, most students are working adults who thrive with flexibility. Another focus of Comeback Kids is on technology skills. Older students in their 50s often come in with very little tech knowledge, according to Doug. Chromebooks are provided and every student has to complete a Google slide portfolio upon exiting the program. “It’s really cool when you see someone who is 50 years old…. running a touchscreen promethium board.” Every year, Comeback Kids graduates approximately 200 students. To date, the youngest graduate was 18 and the oldest graduate was 64.

PINING FOR PINS STOCKTON LOCAL JOINS THE PROFESSIONAL BOWLING ASSOCIATION BY ANGELA RUDOLPH
36
NOVEMBER 2022 | SJMAG.COM
T
he clattering of pins against an oiled lane. The gentle woosh of shoes being sprayed and passed across a counter. Rows of colorful balls sparkling along aisles waiting to be picked up and thrown. Bowling is not only a diverting pastime enjoyed by many, it is also an incredibly intricate sport. Forrest Kritzer is a local Stockton semi-pro bowler in the Western Regional Professional Bowling Association (PBA). He was first introduced to the competitive side of bowling by his older brother, Louis, who unfortunately passed away in 2012. Without Louis, Forrest never would have landed in the sport, finding his footing after his brother took him to his first competition when he was just 11 years old. His passion was ignited that day and he’s been an avid bowler ever since. Forrest says he grew up during an opportune time in Stockton’s history to become a competitive bowler. He participated in the youth competitive league at Pacific Avenue Bowl. “Many have remarked that our youth generation, from the time I was 12-15,
was the best that the center has ever had,” says Forrest. “I was lucky enough to play against some of the best youth competition. Competing against the best is the ideal way to improve.” As the owner of his own trucking company, Forrest is working hard to get things in order so that he can take a few years to fully dedicate himself to bowling and become a National PBA bowler. For now, he enjoys his regional PBA competitions, and often bowls with his wife, Brittany, who he met while competing in local tournaments. You can even watch the husband-wife duo occasionally play each other on Forrest’s YouTube channel, with their threeyear-old son, Beau, along for the ride. If you ask others what they are most impressed with in terms of Forrest’s bowling career, they’d likely discuss his notable nineteen 300+ scoring games, but Forrest is most proud of finishing in the top 8 in a PBA regional tournament. The PBA offers the highest competitive level of scratch bowling and that’s exactly what Forrest desires most. Once he becomes a National PBA bowler, Forrest will be traveling all over the United States, representing Stockton and competing against the best.

LIMITLESS ESCAPE GAMES IS GIVING US THE CREEPS
NEW ROOM ‘THE MORGUE’ DEBUTS IN LINCOLN CENTER BY NORA HESTON TARTE
L
imitless Escape Games opened its Stockton outpost in 2017, the second location of the popular escape room business that combines intricate decorations and mind-boggling puzzles in a high-adrenaline atmosphere. If you haven’t gotten into the craze yet—dating back to Japan in 2007—it’s about time, but the newest room, we warn, isn’t for the fearful. Mid-November, the Lincoln Center company will welcome ‘The Morgue’ to its line-up of interactive puzzle rooms. “’The Morgue’ will be our fifth adventure,” says Owner Michael Hill, who is also behind the Livermore location of Limitless. “The other adventures have been family-friendly, however, with ‘The Morgue’ it is recommended for players 16+.” That’s because ‘The Morgue’ plans to be quite graphic and bloody with plenty of jump scares. “It will not be for the faint of heart,” Michael warns. This spooky new room is rated at medium difficulty, can accommodate up to ten players, and gives participants up to sixty minutes to escape.

Stockton’s four other rooms include Pirate Adventure, Bank Heist, Sherlock Holmes, and Wizard School. The best way to get familiar with the rooms is to head online where brief descriptions give background info on each themed experience. Wizard School, for example, asks players to obtain the heart of a dragon. The detailed storyline makes the activity come to life, as you embody a group of readyto-graduate young wizards embarking on one final dangerous task together. Bank Heist takes you
from fantasy to reality, asking your group instead to take on the role of master thieves, break into a bank, and steal one of the world’s rarest and most valuable gems. Every online description includes mustknow details such as how many people can play the room at a time, what skill level the room requires, and the time allotted to escape. To book, use the online portal. Pick your room, your time slot, and your number of participants. Prepay, then show up. It’s that easy.

A VETERAN’S
BEST FRIEND
GOLDEN STATE GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE RUNS SAVE PROGRAM TO HELP VETERANS BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD
J
ayne Goad has long held a place in her heart for German Shepherds. Starting in 2001, she began rescuing German Shepherd dogs, and in 2009 an organization named Golden State German Shepherd Rescue started operations. It was only natural that Jayne would get on board. Over the years, she’s held positions in the organization including secretary, evaluator, foster, foster coordinator, adoption counselor, and adoption day manager. In March, she took over as president. Part of GSGSR is the SAVE program, which stands for Shepherd And Veteran Enablement. “Our mission is to match military veterans with rescued companion dogs and make it easy for them to adopt,” Jayne says. While some of the dogs from the rescue will become certified service dogs, that isn’t the only role they can
play in a veteran's life. “We focus on the level before service dog, what we refer to as a companion dog,” Jayne says. “Think of it as a great family pet.” Over 900 dogs have been placed with families since GSGSR began, and a few have been placed specifically with veterans through the SAVE Program. The goal is for animals rescued from the Northern Central Valley to be paired with veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress or anxieties that arise with a return to civilian life. “Having a companion dog brings affection, fun, and a sense of purpose into their lives,” Jayne says. “When the dog licks your face, you’ve got to get off the couch and go play. That’s a good thing when you are feeling depressed.” Veterans often elect to complete a higher level of training to meet specific
needs, but every German Shepherd through GSGSR is placed immediately into a foster home where fundamental training begins. “We work hard to make the adoption process easy for our adopters, both veteran and non-veteran. For our veteran adopter, we speak to the veteran and/ or caregiver to assess their specific needs. It may be as simple as the dog joining the veteran on walks to get them out of the house or introducing purpose into their lives when they have to train, feed, and care for another.” Next, a specific match is suggested by the rescue to ensure the dog and human handler best meet each other’s needs. “We take a lot of pride and care with this step, which has resulted in a very low return rate,” Jayne says. “This is better for all the dogs and humans involved.”

ANDREW & MAVERICK
Andrew Martinez was a 38B Civil Affairs Specialist in the Army. He deployed to Iraq in 2008-2009. On his first deployment, he was wounded when a suicide bomber detonated a suicide vest near his foot patrol. “Three soldiers died and ten were wounded,” Andrew shares. “I had multiple shrapnel wounds and a TBI. I was separated from the military early.” Fast forward to 2022, Andrew’s girlfriend Kelly, who has long been fostering dogs, convinced Andrew to get a foster dog through GSGSR. He is what rescues typically refer to as a failed foster, meaning the family ends up adopting the dog instead. “Maverick is six months and full of energy,” Andrews says. Because Maverick became so quickly attached the Andrew, he decided to keep him. “Ever since we got him, he has always been by my side. He loves to play with the other dogs and loves to eat. He is very food motivated and loves meeting new people." Maverick is currently in the process of being trained and certified as a service dog for Andrew. “German Shepherds can be very obedient and have a good temperament. They are very smart, hard-working, and devoted to their family,” Andrew says. After Maverick finishes his initial training and learns basic commands, Andrew is going to apply for a second program that trains service dogs pro bono for veterans and first responders. “Maverick is more than a rescue dog,” Andrew says. Even though Maverick hasn’t started his formal service dog training yet, he’s already displaying the behaviors expected of many companion dogs. “He is very in tune with me and seems to know when I am not feeling well; physically or mentally. He loves to cuddle with me during the night. There have been times where I was in physical pain and he has tried to lick the areas where I am hurting like he knows that I am in pain. There have been times where I have been experiencing mental health symptoms and he has laid calmly with me and placed his head on my lap.” Andrew and Kelly also continue to foster other dogs, bringing in temporary playmates for Maverick and continuing to help alleviate some of the burden placed on local shelters. “It is hard at times to give up foster dogs that you have grown attached to,” Andrew says. “But that just means that we are able to get another dog out of the shelter.”

BRYCE & KYLO
Bryce Carter joined the army in 2004 before he even graduated high school. For four years he served in the 4th Infantry Division and deployed to Iraq. “I held two positions [with the 4th Infantry Division]. My first position was a weapons trainer for the 8th Division of the Iraqi Army. I was tasked with teaching the Iraqi Army all about their soviet weapons, how to use and care for them, and as a whole with my other small team how to effectively conduct operations.” At his home base in Fort Hood, Bryce started winning competitions. “I won the company, and battalion soldier of the month boards. I also attended the Army’s Leadership school where I finished as an honor graduate on the Commandants list. I was then quickly promoted to Sergeant,” he shares. When he deployed again, Bryce went ahead of his unit to prepare the accommodations and training. He then transitioned to intelligence gathering in Baghdad, the initial job he was trained for. “I remained in that position until my departure from the Army in 2008.” Kylo is a three-and-a-half-year-old male German Shepherd. “When we first received Kylo we were informed that he was a stray from Stockton. He was very much underweight and didn’t really know how to be a dog, meaning that he didn’t really know how to interact with other dogs,” Bryce says. Despite his lack of weight, Kylo is a big dog, which can be intimidating, but Bryce says he has a calm demeanor that is “very special.” Kylo plays well with the family’s other dog, Kane, but aside from that, he hasn’t taken to playing much with other dogs or humans. He’s protective if a dog gets aggressive with a member of his family, but that’s about it. “Kylo much prefers to come to you, lay on his back, and have you rub his belly,” Bryce says. Kylo has adapted well to being a service dog and loves to work. “When Kylo gets his vest and leash on, he knows it's time to go to work and his demeanor immediately changes. He is more alert, he stays very close to my side, and does everything he was trained to do.” Kylo is most vocal when he gets left behind. “I am very much his service human as he is my service dog,” Bryce says. It was actually Bryce’s wife Julie who found Kylo. After halting his long search for the right rescue dog out of frustration (and attending classes without a dog in the meantime to learn what he could), Julie stayed persistent. That’s how she found Jayne and eventually Kylo. “Kylo came into my life… the moment I needed him the most,” Bryce says. “It turns out it was also the moment he needed us as well.”

VISIT OAK 58
NOVEMBER 2022 | SJMAG.COM
O
akland carries with it a big reputation, and like many of its inhabitants, it refuses to be put into a box. Those who’ve never visited may shy away from its urban neighborhoods, while those in the know clamor to the big East Bay city to discover food, art, culture, and more. A melting pot of ethnic cuisines, some of the best meals are found here, where celebrity chefs bring as much character to their establishments as the fresh spices sprinkled over their flavorful out-of-the-box meals. And when you’re not gorging on chicken and waffles and authentic BBQ, you won’t run out of activities. From the Chabot Space Center
perched high above the city to the new section of Oakland Zoo dedicated to California wildlife, we bet there’s plenty you’ve yet to discover in Oakland.
The Food
First things first. When you visit an urban city center like Oakland, there are no shortage of restaurants. And with the concentration of eateries comes a lot of variety. Owners behind the joints have a deep understanding of their food and are happy to share it with customers. Perhaps one of the best experiences to have in Oakland is at Everett & Jones BBQ & Blues. This rowdy restaurant has

two experiences. The first, up front, keeps drinks flowing and late-night party jams blasting from the DJ booth more nights of the week than one would expect. The large space has plenty of tables to dig into the sauced-up meats and southern sides that make this menu standout. The real party, however, is in the back. Behind a closed door, you’ll transport from modern party to the type of jazz club of yore, an experience I didn’t even know existed anymore. Live bands with histories almost as rich as their voices serenade the crowd, featuring passionate vocals and banging instrumentals. People get up and dance

and hoot and holler along. A full bar brings drinks as overflowing plates of collard greens, candy yams, and macaroni and cheese accompany platters of sliced beef brisket and smoked chicken. If you came for fare you can’t find everywhere, we suggest dipping into alaMar, a seafood-heavy restaurant with Cajun and Mediterranean roots. Chef Nelson German, a decorated celebrity chef, is at the helm, creating mouthwatering dishes just like his mother and grandmother used to make. Braised Oxtail is an obvious favorite, prepared Dominican style with yellow island rice, black bean stew, marinated cabbage, and late harvest corn. There’s also peel-and-eat shrimp, whole Alaskan snow crabs, mussels, and more. If you

came with a group, order the feast—you won’t be disappointed. Fun fact: Outside of the restaurant is one of the remaining decorative Stompers, but more on that later.. Polmella offers a chance to dive into Middle Eastern cuisine. The open space feels airy and bright with a rooftop patio while the California-meets-Israeli menu is brimming with mezze, light and fresh salads, falafels, and more. Owner Mica Talmor calls the cuisine a mix of Levantine, Maghrebi, North African, Mediterranean, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern, a true melting pot of underrepresented cuisines. If you’ve heard of Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, then you know Home of Chicken & Waffles in Oakland. This soul food spot, popular for both late-
night and brunch, has familial ties to the Los Angeles joint. And while chicken and waffles may be available just about everywhere these days, there is nothing quite like having the original—especially after midnight. Calavera is more than your average Mexican restaurant. The chic eatery is known for its Oaxacan fare and it stays true to its roots, even including seasoned grasshoppers in some of its dishes. A large outdoor patio offers a sunny spot to sip a Spicy Citrus Margarita while gorging on chips and guacamole. When you’re ready for dinner, the fresh seafood is a popular choice, taking advantage of the city’s position close to the ocean. A corridor just outside offers a pedestrian space to stroll after dinner and pick up coffee or ice cream under a dreamy display of string lights. If you came for the ambiance, Lake Chalet on Lake Merritt is a can’t miss. Outdoor dining is coveted, offering sunset views from the wooden dock. Even on a chilly night, it’s a magical experience only amplified by the sophisticated menu of seafood, steak, and pasta. After you’ve dined across the country within the confines of Oakland proper, stop by Oaktown Spice Shop where you can stock up on coveted blends to flavor your foods with at home. We mean it when we say you’ll underestimate just how much you’ll spend at the foodie haven.

Oakland Zoo
Two of Oakland’s most notable attractions are the Chabot Space and Science Center and the Oakland Zoo. The first added a NASA Experience just one year ago, acting as a new visitor hub for NASA's Ames Research Center based in Silicon Valley. The exhibit details space exploration from past decades and gives the general public a chance to learn about astronauts’ work beyond Earth. In addition to the new exhibit, Chabot is also known for its planetarium shows, emceed by knowledgeable staff that can point out constellations and explain why the North Star is called the North Star. There are also opportunities to peek through one of three major telescopes on site, 1,500 feet above the Bay on the space center’s observatory deck. The zoo has also added a few new features, most notably its California Trail, a dedicated space above the park (accessible by gondola) that includes native plants and animals. The new area is heavy in education and conservation efforts, allowing guests to walk above the animals, instead of meeting them face to face in their enclosures, along a secure pathway. Animals include California condors, bald eagles, jaguars, mountain lines, two types of bears, and more. Pro-Tip: Don’t miss the chance to take in the view from the San Francisco Bay Overlook, where you can see six counties from the deck. Jack London Square has long been revered as one of the more popular destinations within Oakland. Known for housing nice restaurants and plenty of watering holes, the hub sits right on the water and often acts as a precursor to Oakland Athletics games. Through California Canoe & Kayak, you can slip out of the square and onto the water, paddling on everything from kayaks and canoes to stand-up paddleboards (SUP) and surfskis. SJMAG.COM

Art is Everywhere
It’s hard to look anywhere without catching an eyeful of something big, bold, and colorful on the streets of Oakland. The art in The Town bleeds into the concrete; it’s part of its heartbeat. In addition to the overwhelming murals on every corner—and in between— there are also a collection of galleries, each with its own style. Among our favorites are Joyce Gordon Gallery (a black female-owned hotspot filled with African American artists), E14 (which sells goods such as t-shirts, tote bags, stickers, candles, and more with a metropolitan flair), Tyranny Allen Gallery (where hip hop culture reigns supreme), and SLATE Contemporary Gallery (which feels simultaneously modern and high-end with textured wall art). One of the more whimsical art projects in Oakland included the design and placement of 50 Stomper (the mascot of the Oakland Athletics) statues. The installation, which was created as part of a public art project ahead of the 2018 season, has lost some of its Stompers since, but it has become a fun scavenger hunt to find the remaining elephants.
Get Outdoors
Many are quickly surprised at just how green parts of Oakland are. Known mostly as a concrete jungle, it’s not hard to find open spaces to take in the natural beauty of the Bay. In addition to those stunning views, Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park offers a place to hike under the shade of towering trees away from it all (no, really, there’s no cell reception here). Another ideal spot to soak in the sun (when it pokes out from behind the fog) is at Lake Merritt. Here, many gather to lounge in the lush grass that surrounds the lake or walk the trail around its perimeter.

It's all About the View
There are plenty of places to grab a drink in Oakland, from sandbar (where tropical cocktails and real sand are aplenty) to Bar 355 with its speakeasy vibes. There’s no place quite like a rooftop bar, however. Take in views of the Bay from High5, where bar bites and brunch are also on the menu. Or, Torch Oakland, which touts itself as a rooftop nightclub.

The Moxy Hotel
Where to Stay
If you want luxury, book a room at The Claremont Club & Spa. While it dons a Berkeley address, the sprawling, four-star white estate sits right on the border of the two cities, making it a good homebase for a weekend in Oakland. Here, opulence meets urban. The Fairmont property features large suites and club-level amenities, including a gym and pool. Much of the clientele also carry an air of celebrity, so spotting a movie legend on your visit isn’t even a rarity. When you’re hungry, Limewood Bar & Restaurant serves seasonal fare throughout the day, starting with breakfast at 7:30 AM and ending dinner service 9 or 10 PM, depending on the day. Bar service extends even longer. Brunch, however, is a favorite, served on weekends only. Every meal is the exotic brainchild of Joseph Paire III, who brings his eclectic style of culinary prowess to California after stints in Atlanta and Washington D.C. If you’re looking to be more central, and

soak up some of the vibey, big city culture that vibrates throughout Oakland, The Moxy is another solid choice for overnight accommodations. On Telegraph Avenue, you’ll be in the heart of it all where Bar Moxy serves as a social hub. The check-in desk shares space with a full-service bar where guests can mingle, even late night. For those in it for the newness, Kissel Uptown is one of the city’s most recent additions, a boutique-style hotel with just 168 rooms. Settled in the heart of the entertainment and art district, Kissel itself is a work of art. The interior effortlessly melds historical references to Oakland’s car manufacturing past with modern design and an art deco flair. When staying here, food and drink are easily accessible. Paul Canales has set up shop downstairs with his Southern French restaurant, Occitania, with Italian and Spanish infusions. The menu is always changing but often includes delicacies such as rockfish and escargot. It’s also home to the previously mentioned High5. Occitania

W
alking into The Kitchen at Stonebrier is like finding yourself in an old European city center, with brightly lit, colorful chandeliers in red, yellow, and blue, hanging from the ceiling, illuminating the room, and artistic and sophisticated Italian ads decorating the walls. The windows that stretch from floor to ceiling are adorned with vertical vines that provide a sense of calm and serenity. The tables are topped with clay-toned marble, each with their own individual lamp casting a bit of sunshine onto your dish. The bar is adorned with aged spirits, impressive wines, and fresh citrus
waiting to garnish the next cocktail. The newly renovated garden has an open-air concept, an architectural update that came out of the COVID-19 pandemic, creating an eating space filled with fresh air. A visit to The Kitchen at Stonebrier is a Stockton escape from the ordinary, a creative and delicious fine-dining experience focused on fresh, seasonal ingredients, many of which are grown right here in the San Joaquin Valley. Chef Shane Tracewell is celebrating Stonebrier’s connection to the abundance of harvest with his fall menu. Understanding the value of cultivating relationships with
local farmers, and continually refining how he can facilitate fine dining for all of the restaurant’s guests, he has created an experience at Stonebrier that is unmatched. We suggest starting with a cocktail—the Brown Derby with Bulleit Bourbon, honey syrup, grapefruit, and orange peel is an autumn favorite. Every sip is filled with the fragrance and promise that a new day brings and ends with the flavors of a crisp autumn evening with just a touch of warmth. Try the baby spinach salad with juicy sliced pear, roasted delicata squash (a must-try root veggie for Fall, sourced from a local SJV farm) creamy, tangy goat cheese (also made locally), crunchy toasted walnut, marinated red onion, and sweet pomegranate seeds, all tossed in a refreshing wine vinaigrette. Each bite is a reminder that we have seamlessly moved from summer to fall. Then, order the duck breast. Each forkful is perfectly tender, its skin bursting with savory flavor. It’s served on a bed of sweet and smokey fig mole (arguably the most delicious mole you will ever taste), alongside handmade red beet
gnocchi, a pillow of nourishing flavor, comfort, and pleasure. Chef Shane tops this dish with shaved carrot and parsnip, for an added layer of delicately sweet, savory, and cleansing perfection. This is fall at its finest. The Kitchen at Stonebrier has not only perfected traditional dining, they also have extended services to include fine catering and private dining for smaller parties, including an elegant banquet room with a private bar and an outdoor garden with firepit. The main kitchen offers wine pairings with their menu on the last Tuesday of each and they have weekly live music. Perhaps the best part of the dining aesthetics at Stonebrier is when you close your eyes. Hear the water trickling? A faraway city’s fountain. It’s where the people gather to relax, unwind, and connect on the day’s events, where you meet a familiar face, or maybe even the face of someone who will become a part of your life. It’s where the city shares life, energy, and makes memories, and no doubt this is what it’s like to dine at The Kitchen at Stonebrier.

Celebrate Tempranillo Day
NINE LODI VINEYARDS WILL BE POURING THE SPANISH VARIETAL NOVEMBER 12-13 BY NORA HESTON TARTE
T
empranillo wines are made from black grapes. The varietal originated in Spain and is named for the Spanish temprano. It translates to “early” in English and refers to the grape’s tendency to ripen several weeks ahead of its neighboring Spanish red grapes. In most cases, the grapes lend themselves to a full-bodied red wine that is more dry and less sweet. The alcohol content is average, landing most commonly between 13.5 and 15 percent. Other regions are known for the grape, which prefers a hot climate, including Rioja, Mexico, Argentina, Texas, Peru, Chile, and of course Lodi. Similar to the Tour of Albarino hosted in August, the Tour of Tempranillo welcomes
local wineries to celebrate the varietal with weekend specials just a few days after the national holiday is observed on November 10. Bokisch Vineyards, for example, will offer a side-by-side tasting of the 2018 Tempranillo, 2018 Bokisch Family Estate Tempranillo, and 2016 Gran Reserva Tempranillo, to compare and contrast. Heritage Oak Winery in Acampo will serve a complimentary tasting of three wines over the weekend: 2018 Tempranillo, 2019 Tempranillo, and 2018 Olé! Blend. At Jeremy Wine Co. the experience will allow tastes straight from the barrel as participants get to try the vino at two stages of the winemaking process. A hot

A vertical tasting of the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Tempranillo from McConnell Estates Winery is free to those participating in the weekend event and includes extra discounts. THAI COCKTAILS NEW DRINKS HIT THE MENU AT TRACY THAI BY NORA HESTON TARTE
G
esaranee, the owner of Tracy Thai, is always adding something new to the lineup. And while her long list of signature cocktails has been a highlight for years, with favorites such as the zesty Thai One One and the colorful Cloud-9 delighting patrons every time they walk in, she recently revamped the menu with a few new concoctions that bring the taste of summer into the winter months. Next time you come in, try one of these newbies: Strawberry Fizz, Cooler than a Cucumber, or Rising Sun.
IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD IT YET The drink that started it all at Tracy Thai, the Thai One One was the first signature craft cocktail put on Gesaranee’s menu. Made with Beefeater Gin, the Thai One One evokes the essence of Thai culture, using Thai basil, Thai chili, and lemongrass to create a zesty and slightly spicy drink. The concoction is served up in a chilled martini glass with a sweet and spicy rim.
RISING SUN Similar to a daiquiri and made with white rum, this fancy sipper is garnished with a single dehydrated lemon slice for a chic touch. Mixed with fresh lime and pineapple juice, it’s served in a chilled martini glass so you can pretend you’re on an island somewhere exotic.

COOLER THAN A CUCUMBER
STRAWBERRY FIZZ
This picture-perfect cocktail looks like a glass of ice-cold, refreshing spa water with an elegant twist of cucumber to provide color and depth. Served neat, the refresher starts with Tito’s Vodka and uses orange bitters and fresh cucumber to enhance its flavor. Instead of crushed ice, the drink is served over one large ice cube in a rocks glass for a delicate presentation.
This fruit-forward cocktail starts with a botanical Bombay gin. Served in a tall glass, there are bright tastes of strawberry and lemon juice before its filled with tonic water to achieve a balanced flavor and fizzy texture. Fresh strawberries make all of the difference, giving diners an excuse to prolong their summer habits into the winter months.

NOVEMBER 2022 | SJMAG.COM
o you remember the first time you tasted cotton candy? Its airy texture that melts in your mouth is the classic childhood treat that keeps amusing us with its unique and satisfying flavor. In hues of pink, blue, and purple, tasting it immediately makes anyone feel like a kid again whether at the county fair or out on a sunny day at the boardwalk. Now you can relive your memories of this mouthwatering treat when you visit Stockton’s American Waffle Diner. Owner Nesrin has added two new menu items featuring homemade spun cotton candy—topping a waffle and a cocktail. Enjoy the taste of cotton candy layered on one of their crisp and fluffy, hot, golden waffles with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and dusted with powdered sugar or on top of a giant mimosa (bring a friend to share, this one is built for at least two). Both items come garnished with edible butterflies atop the magical spun sugar. It's all part of American Waffle Diner’s always expanding menu, keeping our appetites satisfied and bellies entertained. When you dine in, don’t forget your camera to document the experience!

Instead, she’ll be practicing inclusivity with a welcoming and diverse display of holiday cheer.

Coming of Age One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to quality tequila BY SARAH STEFFENS
T
here may not be a more controversial liquor than tequila, which often lacks in its reputation for elegance and sophistication when compared to whiskey, bourbon, or vodka. That, however, could be attributed to people not drinking the right kinds of tequila, likely due to over-production of cheap varieties. There are some that are truly exceptional in quality and flavor. But before we travel up to the top of the tequila shelf, let’s start with what tequila actually is.

Tequila is made by distilling the fermentation of blue agave plants. By Mexican law, if a drink calls itself “tequila,” it must come from Tequila, Jalisco, a state in Central Mexico. It also must contain at least 51 percent blue agave (which reveals that cheaper varieties are probably not tequila at all). Distillers take the heart of an agave
plant, steam it and shred the heart until it releases juice, called aguamiel. The juice is mixed with cane sugar and yeast and fermented for several days. It is then transferred to copper pots to further ferment and reach 90-proof or higher. There are five types of tequila with two of them being aged, which brings out its different flavors, depending on what types of barrels it is aged in:
Today, most tequila is consumed in a cocktail, but if you really want to experience the sophistication of agave spirit, try it aged, and straight, and see if you can pick up on its unique flavors. To experts, tequila can taste like chocolate, cinnamon, or coffee. It can have the distinct tastes of summer stone fruits or transport you to the tropics with its hints of coconut or pineapple, creating a more complex tasting experience akin to wine or beer. It can also be the pathway to experience the flavors of American, European or French oak.
