WOMEN & WINE Our women and wine… two of my favorite things! It’s no secret that deep family roots dominate our AVA, and in my opinion, that’s a top aspect that makes the Lodi Appellation so unique. The families that farm the land and ferment the wine can be found on-site, conversing with the public as they quite literally taste the fruits of their labor. Who better to discuss tasting notes with than the men and

“I always love being in the company of women. It’s always about good conversation and great wine.” –Naomi Watts

women who fill your cup. It’s truly a personalized experience you can’t get anywhere else. Sure, we may not have as many wineries as Napa (though our numbers are growing at a rapid rate, currently we have more than 80 wineries!) but our small-lot, custom-crush brands are putting Lodi on the international winetasting map. Their passion, attention to detail, and dedication to family history resulted in some of the most charming tasting rooms around serving nationally celebrated and awarded wines. Yes, the wine grape industry is historically male-dominated, but as the newest generation steps up to carry on their family tradition, it is women who are making moves to revolutionize Lodi wine. Our Food and Wine Editor, Suzanne Ledbetter, sat down with seven women who play an integral part in some of Lodi’s most celebrated and awarded wineries for an inside look at life in the industry. Keep these women on your radar… because big things are to come! If our wine-focused feature inspires you to indulge in a few of Lodi’s famed reds, we won’t judge. But, if your teeth turn slightly red or purple after a night of sipping, you may want to turn to our Dental for All Ages article. Wine-induced tooth stains occur when wine latches on to plaque. To avoid a wine-stained smile, be sure to brush before you go out to reduce plaque build-up, sip water between glasses, eat while you drink, and don’t mix whites and reds. White wines’ high acidity erodes enamel and serves as a primer that makes red tannins cling to your teeth even more! If you see a tinge of purple while you’re out on the town, don’t brush right away because it can damage your tooth enamel even more. Instead, opt for super-cool wine wipes that can be easily stored in your purse.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES BATTLES AMERICA’S SUICIDE CRISIS For some, it’s difficult to understand how a person could take their life—for others; it’s not. An estimated 90 percent

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

of people who commit suicide have a mental illness, and 50 percent suffer specifically from depression. According to

the National Alliance on Mental Health, one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness in a given year, and 9.8 million of them suffer so severely that it interferes or limits their major life activities. “Depression not only affects 300 million people around the world, but it’s also the leading cause of disability worldwide,” notes San Joaquin County Behavioral Health Services (BHS) Medical Director, Dr. Khurram Durrani, MD, DFAPA. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), commonly know as depression, is suicide’s top risk factor; manifesting as feelings of hopelessness, tiredness, slowed thinking, loss of interest, and un-

explained physical problems like back pain or headaches. As the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) reports, depression can be triggered by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. “Psychiatry is perceived as non-medical, but it’s as biological as oncology and endocrinology. All depression is biological. Yes, it can be triggered by a situation like the loss of a loved one, a drop in social status, or even stress. But, people are genetically predisposed, and the environment does have an impact,” notes Dr. Durrani. So, when does your ‘bad mood’ become depression? Feeling symptoms of depression for a few days after failing a test isn’t

test isn’t clinical depression, but those who suffer symptoms nearly every day for two weeks or more with no relief should fight the urge to isolate, and instead reach out to a professional for help. “Isolation is a major symptom of depression, which can make face-to-face communication difficult,” says Yvonne Gordon LMFT, Chief Mental Health Clinician/ Program Manager at BHS. It’s for this reason, among others, that BHS offers Crisis Intervention Services including a ‘Warm Line’ and ‘Crisis Line’ staffed with mental health clinicians and open to the public 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. This past month, the Warm Line received 1,700 calls. Callers in need of support speak with a clinician who assesses their state and refers them to resources that

26

can range from counseling and outpatient care to temporary placement when necessary. Callers do not have to be in a "crisis" or an urgent condition to request services. A triage evaluation by mental health professionals determines the level of urgency of the crisis and the appropriate course of intervention. In the past year, BHS provided 15,000 youth and adults of San Joaquin County with tools, programs, and treatment plans that foster wellness and recovery. “The services we provide can, quite literally, change lives for the better. We are able to help individuals and their families in our community come to terms with an illness that is treatable, with the help of our clinicians, nurses, psychiatrists, and support staff,” Yvonne explains.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

And perhaps that’s what makes suicide so tragic— a fixable problem ignites the often-impulsive act. “Sixty percent of adults suffering from mental illness are not receiving vital treatment,” Dr. Durrani explains. “We quickly seek help when our physical body ails us—but often fight to conceal mental and emotional pain that could be diminished with proper treatment.” Yet, America is in the midst of a suicide crisis with an average of 44,000 deaths each year. Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined—why? “Suicide rates are on the rise, and though extensive research is being done,

an answer isn’t clear,” Dr. Durrani explains. “But, we do know that prevention is the most effective form of intervention.” Prevention comes in many forms. From spreading awareness and removing stigma, to educating and counseling, BHS is working to help stop suicide and support those with mental illness. Chief Mental Health Clinician, Courtney Flores, LCSW, urges the public to join in the fight by embracing education, practicing inclusion, engaging in open conversations, and promoting understanding. “Suicide is preventable and help is available,” Dr. Durrani states. SACRAMENTO

STREET RISING DOWNTOWN LODI WELCOMES NEW GROWTH  BY

SUZANNE LEDBETTER

For decades, School Street has served as downtown Lodi’s hotspot. But, there is a renaissance happening just a block away, with new storefronts, wine tasting opportunities, and local beer to boot. Sacramento Street is rising, and the transformation has only just begun. Check out a few of our favorite stops along the way!

McCay Cellars

100 B S. Sacramento St. McCay Cellars made the move to Sacramento Street in Downtown Lodi last year. Their stylish tasting room has local wine lovers buzzing—in more ways than one. The wide-open space perfectly blends shabby chic and industrial, with a massive old vine that hangs from the ceiling as its centerpiece. Oh, and did we mention that McCay Cellars creates some of the finest wine around?! Be sure to try the Cinsault, made from the 132-year-old Bechtold Vineyard, or one of their Lodi Native wines.

Idol Beer Works

100 A S. Sacramento St. After two years of research, owner and Head Brewer, Grant Hamilton, was able to purchase the Old Discount Tire building on South Sacramento Street in 2016. Today, craft beer lovers flock to this open-air space for a cold beer in a super cool environment. Try the Farm Fresh Blueberry Hefeweizen, infused with blueberries from local R and G Farms. Or, if alcohol isn’t your thing, sip on an Idol-Aid, Idol’s version of Kombucha.

The Local Collective

11 S. Sacramento St. Owner Jennifer Pratt opened the doors to this unique storefront in July, much to the delight of Lodi shoppers. From the absolute best-smelling artisanal candles to funky purses and handmade jewelry, you can find something for just about everyone on your shopping list. The coolest part? The Local Collective showcases local artists and offers them a brick and mortar shop in which to strut their stuff. They plan to offer workshops and events in the future, so be sure to keep this boutique on your radar.

The Fashionable You Boutique

9 S. Sacramento St. The newest addition to Downtown Lodi’s clothing scene, The Fashionable You Boutique, has two major selling points: Everything in the store is under $50, and they offer their clothing in all sizes, from XS to 3X. After years spent hitting the market and festival scenes selling her clothes, owner Leah Suelter decided to take a leap of faith and open a storefront in Downtown Lodi. “There is so much potential on Sacramento Street,” says Leah. “I am so excited to be part of it!”

2 N. Sacramento St. Lodi’s beloved World of Wonders Science Museum is a hands-on educational museum designed to stimulate discovery for all ages. And if you haven’t heard the news, the WOW has big plans for the future. The museum has secured several of the run-down buildings on Sacramento Street with the intention of renovating them in a significant expansion project. Stay tuned!

GRAPE to

GLASS  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

IT’S HARVEST TIME IN LODI WINE COUNTRY

How do you know when it’s harvest time? When the harvesters are carefully traversing down major thoroughfares? When you smell the musty aroma of fermenting fruit? Or, is it when you see the countryside abuzz with workers toiling the fields? The answer is: Yes, yes, and yes! Harvest is officially in full swing in Lodi Wine Country, and we are here to tell you how it all goes down. The journey from grape to glass is an intricate process, adored by romanticists, grape growers, and wineries alike. But there is a lot of work that goes into making a bottle of wine, and it all starts in the vineyard. When does harvest usually begin? It typically starts in early August and

32

|

ends in late October, but there are always exceptions depending on Mother Nature. Grapes are picked when they reach the right maturity—which is why grape growers and wineries are in constant contact, checking sugar samples to determine the right time to pick the fruit from the vines. Grapes picked for sparkling wines tend to be picked first, and white varietals are typically harvested next. Then, things really start to get rolling with the addition of red varietals like Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Once the grapes have been delivered to the winery, the process of making the fruit into wine begins. In the simplest of statements, grape juice is combined with yeast to make

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

alcohol and carbon dioxide. And while there is a lot more to it than that, all we really need to know is that turning those grapes into wine is a scientific process. The journey from the bunch to the bottle is in the hands of the winemaker, who tends to the process with passion and love. After months of attention, wine there will be! That’s the best part of the harvest, after all, the bounty of new wines for us to drink in the coming months! New wines mean new release parties and new release parties mean

more fun for you and me! So, the next time a harvester is holding you up on the way to work, give the driver a break. It’s all part of the process that gets us from grape to glass. Let’s give a shout out to all of the growers, pickers, machine operators, tractor drivers, and mechanics who work tirelessly throughout the season. Cheers to a safe and prosperous harvest to all the Lodi Wine Country farmers out there—we can’t wait for the 2018 vintage to be bottled! FOR MORE INFORMATION: LodiGrowers.com

al signs dangle from their wires, bearing happy messages like “It’s a good day for a good day.” Hanging from the ceiling are wrought iron light fixtures that would elevate any dining room. “I basically buy everything that I like,” says Linda. “I’d describe the style of my pieces as farm chic and country.” Observing what’s in stock, it’s clear that Linda’s taste is also modern. Fragrant candles and gourmet soaps intermix with Japanese teapots. Patricia Nash purses hang from racks suspended from the ceiling, and Lenox figurines pose on shelf corners.

God says, ‘I give you the desires of your heart,’ and this was one of my desires. When God told Linda Thurman that she was going to receive a building, Linda believed. A pastor of 21 years at Praise Chapel Manteca, Linda had prayed to the Lord for 12 of those years, asking for a “releasing” from God that would allow her to pursue her second passion of curating beautiful items and selling them to the community. Her first passion? Doing the Lord’s work. “But God says, ‘I give you the desires of your heart,’ and this was one of my desires,” says Linda, gesturing to the colorful wares of her boutique, The Nested Owl, that opened in April of 2016. Inside the shop, ceramics, decorations, and new and used antiques are stacked to the ceiling, strategically poised for optimum cuteness. 34

|

How did she build such a wellstocked nest? One stick at a time. “I had two storage units filled with items that I bought over the course of 12 years—my husband didn’t even know,” laughs Linda. “I just kept buying because when you have a vision, you prepare for that vision,” she says. “The Bible says to prepare for what God is going to bring into your life.” And judging by the crowded—but organized—aisles, God has certainly delivered. At The Nested Owl, customers are sure to find a variety of adorable pieces to decorate their homes with or to give as a unique gift, which Linda and her staff will happily wrap for you. Hand-painted glassware and Rae Dunn pottery are stacked next to tiny porcelain owls that double as salt and pepper shakers. Industri-

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

Along with faith, The Nested Owl thrives on hard work and community effort. “There are a lot of women out there who have talents, gifts, dreams, and goals, who want their own business but can’t afford to have their own building,” says Linda. “So, I put the word out for women to bring in their items. I currently have five ladies who sell their wares here.” To keep The Nest looking its best, Linda works tirelessly with the help of Angie, a sister from Linda’s church, as well as Linda’s daughters Regina and Christel, son-in-law Rick, mother Rachel, and husband John, all of whom take care of different tasks around the shop. Linda herself maintains the face of the boutique, emphasizing excellent customer

service every step of the way, a quality garnered from all her years at the church. “You only have one opportunity to make an impact on a person’s life, and you have to seize that opportunity,” says Linda. “So, that’s what I try to do with every person who walks through my door.” In light of her current success, Linda has set her eyes on the future, with a dream of opening seven more stores. But, to Linda, success isn’t defined by finances or expansion. “If you work hard, have faith, and you’re good to people, then you’re already a success,” she says. SEE WHAT’S IN STORE:

MEXICAN HERITAGE CENTER PROMOTES FINE ART AND EDUCATION ON LATINO CULTURE heritage of their community.” Aside from their workshops and celebrations, the MHC’s beautiful, free art exhibits occur frequently and are open to the public. This month they feature the work of Gregory Lucero, a talented artist who, before now, has never exhibited his artwork. “Those are the type of people that I like to work with,” says Gracie, “because they’re talented and deserve to show their work.” This month, the MHC will also hold their annual Adelita Awards, which three local women will have the honor of receiving. “‘Resilient’ would be the word for these women,” explains Gracie. “Adelitas were the strong women who fought in the Mexican revolution, so the recipients are women who have faced challenges in their lives and, in spite of them, are successful.” Courtesy of Visit Stockton

It’s not often that one stumbles upon a place that serves up a healthy dose of fine art, culture, community, and a nice latte. But that’s exactly what the Mexican Heritage Center—and Terra Coffee, within—provides for locals. Situated on the most colorful corner in downtown Stockton, the Mexican Heritage Center (MHC) is an art gallery that not only showcases the work of artists both new and renowned, but also offers locals an education on Mexican traditions and heritage. “The center was started in the late 1990s by a group of local artists called Artistas del Valle,” explains Gracie Madrid, President of the MHC. Over the years, the Center has continued to evolve under her leadership. “We’ve been in this building for almost 10 years. We love this place because of the windows and the foot traffic—it’s per36

From being the very first Principal at Commodore Stockton Skills School to implementing several beneficial programs as the principal of Martin Luther King School for 18 years, Gracie knows just how essential it is to educate the community in order to preserve Latino heritage. “During Christmas, we teach people how to make tamales because it’s a dying art. Kids nowadays don’t know how to make them,” says Gracie. Other holidays celebrated at the Center include Day of the Dead, for which the MHC holds workshops for kids and adults alike, teaching them to make masks as well as ofrendas for their loved ones who have passed. “This year is going to be special because we’re going to have a Symposium mixer on October 19,” says Gracie. “We’re inviting people from the city and local government because it’s important that they’re educated on the

STRIVING

SCA in STUDENT

ATHLETES

DR. MANSHADI LEADS THE CRUSADE AGAINST SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST Few things are more tragic than a life taken at an early age. Many have read versions of the horrifying headline: ‘Young, promising high school athlete dies suddenly while playing their sport.’ In the majority of such cases, the cause of death is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a medical event that, if identified and treated quickly, could have a lifesaving outcome. According to the American Red Cross, “The rate of young people dying from cardiac arrest has increased by 10 percent in the last 10 years.” Such statistics are frightening, but for Dr. Ramin Manshadi—an Associate Clinical Professor in Cardiology at UC Davis School of Medicine who specializes in Interventional and Sports Cardiology—it was a call to action. Having studied SCA among high school athletes early on in his career, the topic became both a focus and a point of passion. So much so that his second consumer-friendly book, to be published later this year, “Aims to help young athletes understand their bodies better in an effort to identify the warning signs of SCA,” explains Dr. Manshadi. “Typically, athletes want to downplay their symptoms so that they can continue to compete on the field. But if any athlete develops

chest pain, passes out, or finds that they’re more fatigued than normal during exercise, they should visit their doctor,” he says. “All athletes should be aware of these warning signs.” While Dr. Manshadi’s main specialty is Interventional Cardiology, he will be the first to tell you that the best intervention is prevention. And what’s the most effective way to promote prevention? Promoting awareness. The nationally recognized Board Certified Cardiologist made a commitment to educate and train students and staff, and install Automated External Defibrillators (AED)s, in high school campuses across the country. This portable device diagnoses cardiac arrhythmias and sends an electric shock to the heart in an attempt to restore normal rhythm, at an impressive 90 percent success rate. As a commitment to advancing his mission, all proceeds of Dr. Manshadi’s newest book will go toward donating AEDs to high schools. “It is essential to understand that once the athlete is in cardiac arrest, if the AED is applied within two minutes, survival is as high as 90 percent.” At five minutes or more—the time it may take for an ambulance to arrive—survival is only 10 percent. Dr. Manshadi is advancing his crusade via his Presidency of the California chapter of the

American College of Cardiology (ACC), a role elected by his medical peers and assumed in April of this year. “The ACC has all the qualities necessary to make a big difference in the cardiac health of both Californians and the national population,” says Dr. Manshadi. “We’re at the forefront of practicing evidence-based medicine and are one of the first organizations to publish guidelines outlining different diagnoses and treatments for cardiovascular health problems, including AED.” But Dr. Manshadi knows that this battle can’t be won without the help of the general public: This year, a bill has been proposed, AB-2009, that would require schools to have at least one AED on site, and have written action plans that can be implemented immediately, among other requirements. Please join Dr. Manshadi in saving our young athletes by sending letters of support for this important bill. “Currently, cardiac disease is the number one cause of death, but we’ve been able to significantly reduce its occurrence,” says Dr. Manshadi. “With the help of legislation and public awareness, there’s a good chance it won’t be a cause of death in young athletes in the next 10 years.” JOIN THE FIGHT: DrManshadi.com

Long before Yelp, the community looked to July’s annual Best of San Joaquin edition for the top places to wine and dine in the community. The reader’s choice

awards cultivated quite a following over the last 17 years, as it represented the public’s voice, unfiltered and authentic. As a consumer, nothing beats finding your favorite hair stylist or spa, physician or boutique. It’s like a special present: Recognizing and receiving top-notch service, raving to friends, “They’re the best around!” And as a business owner, being on the flip side of that scenario couldn’t be sweeter: The friendly rivalry between fellow business owners, the office phone ringing off the hook at the end of June: ‘Are the votes in?!’, and the thrilling feeling of placing a “Best of the Best” decal on a business’s front door. We are a magazine that thrives on positivity and praise, and it’s an honor to be able to showcase everything that makes San Joaquin great, from restaurants and wineries to shopping, health and beauty, and entertainment. Researching, reporting and debuting the winners each year is thrilling for staff members, and flipping through the final product is an excellent way for readers to find new favorites. With over 5,000 votes cast and 300 plus winners, a celebration is certainly in order! It’s for this multifunctional reason that our Best Of Event was born—to further celebrate and share community gems, bringing winners together under one roof for a truly unique experience. With over 30 restaurants and wineries serving and pouring, more than 1,200 business owners, community members, and fans joined together to indulge, laugh, and enjoy the party. Together, we danced the night away on the gorgeous terrace overlooking Brookside’s pristine grounds. It’s a vibe we love creating, and if you didn’t catch us this year, we’ll see you in 2020, friends.

TANYA MACMAHON

GENERAL MANAGER/WINE CLUB MANAGER

Macchia Wines When Tanya MacMahon’s mom and stepdad founded Macchia in 2001, it opened doors of opportunity, interest, and ultimately passion. And as the winery grew in popularity, a time came for the next generation to step up. In 2006 Tanya joined the team to head their ever-popular and growing wine club that features not only member perks and discounts, but a slew of creative and entertaining social events. Since she’s taken charge, Macchia has solidified their status as the ‘Best Wine Club’ for three years running in San Joaquin Magazine’s annual reader’s choice awards. Tanya is also responsible for all social media and tasting room personnel while assisting in the marketing and wine tasting events Macchia attends. One of the most significant challenges is dealing with the daunting world of out-of-state sales and compliance, and of course, balancing it all as a mother to twins. But, it’s the dynamic nature of the wine business that con tinues to draw Tanya in: The work is fast-paced, ever-changing,

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

and there is always something new to learn. But more than anything, Tanya focuses on providing an experience that leaves a lasting impression on each person who steps foot into their picturesque winery.

Q. What makes the Lodi Wine region unique? A. Lodi is the largest wine grape growing region in California. For so long, Lodi growers were selling their fruit to wineries in Napa and Sonoma, and not getting much credit. Lodi is a hidden jewel that is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Q. As leaders in the industry, do you have any advice for other women wanting to get into the business? A. Be ready to work! This job calls for long hours and hard work at times. In the end, it is ultimately worth it.

MELISSA PHILLIPS STROUD VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES & MARKETING

Michael David Winery When Melissa Phillips Stroud isn’t travelling the world sharing her family’s wine, she’s creating and executing their next dynamite campaign. Does Michael David Winery ring a bell? If you ¬¬-answered yes (and we¬¬¬’re sure you did), chances are the strategies of this VP of Sales and Marketing have caught your attention. The daughter of Michael Phillips—one of the founding fathers of the hugely successful winery—is a driving force behind the brand: Developing, overseeing, and implementing marketing strategies that continue to nationally solidify Michael David as a top-notch winery. Making moves in a ‘man’s world’ is nothing new for Melissa—in fact, she’s an advocate. “I’m an active member of Women of the Vine,” she says. “The organization focuses on women in our male-dominated industry.” Melissa graduated Cal Poly with a double degree in Ag Business and Wine and Viticulture before heading to Sonoma State for her Certificate of Wine Business, and today she shares her passion for both education and the wine industry through her involvement in UC Davis’ Extended Education Program. Locally, Melissa served on the Visit Lodi! board promoting tourism and currently sits on the board for the Lodi Grape Festival. Outside of the wine industry, she is on both the Lodi Memorial Adventist Hospital Foundation and the board of the LOEL Senior Center. Her greatest accomplishment? The launch of the Freakshow campaign. “It was a significant effort with the rest of my family,” Melissa humbly credits. “But, it was the first large brand that I was a part of from the beginning, from launch and execution, to branding and pricing, to distributor kick-offs.” Today, Freakshow is climbing the charts, soon to become Michael David’s top-seller.

Q. What is an important lesson you have learned from the previous generation? A. Dream big and dedicate yourself to that vision. I’m inspired by some of the risks they’ve taken over the years, but they stay true to themselves and keep striving for more. My father and uncle are two of the most generous people I know, and they have instilled in me to always give back to others and to our community!

Q. What makes the Lodi Wine region unique?

56

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

A. Lodi is unique because we all work together and are unified! We are one of the only regions whose grape growers actively work with the wineries under the same umbrella to promote the region for everyone (through the Lodi Wine Grape Commission). The message is Lodi!

FARRAH FELTEN JOLLEY VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES

Klinker Brick Winery

As the sixth generation to take the helm, Farrah Felten Jolley oversees wine sales for Klinker Brick, one of Lodi’s most accomplished and awarded wineries. She travels the world, from Germany to China, sharing their family story and pouring their wine. But, she is quick to point out that working for a family business also means being prepared to help wherever and whenever you are needed. Her work keeps her on her toes. Reflecting on her favorite project, Farah describes building the national sales team in an effort to share Klinker Brick’s passion with the country. “When my parents started the winery, they never thought we would get to the size we are today,” she notes. “It’s great to look back and see how far we have come.” This growth applies not only to her family business, but to the land where their roots are planted. In love with Lodi, Farrah is a member of the California Wine Education Foundation and works to promote Lodi Wine through her involvement in ZinFest and Wine and Chocolate weekend. When asked what makes the Lodi Wine Region unique, Farrah didn’t miss a beat. “It’s an appellation filled with a multitude of fourth, fifth, and sixth generation grape growers. And with more grape growers founding wineries, visitors to the tasting room often get to chat with the men and women behind the wine. You don’t see that in other regions.”

Q. What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned from the previous generation in your family business? A. I’ve learned to be passionate about what you decide to do in life. When I decided to come into the family business, I felt deep down that this was what I wanted to do. It’s in my blood!

Q. What do you love most about your job? A. Definitely promoting my family’s wines around the world. One of the greatest things is having someone come up and tell you how much they love your product.

KENDRA LANGE ALTNOW MARKETING MANAGER

LangeTwins Family Winery & Vineyards Kendra Lange Altnow has a rich history of farming flowing through her veins. Nearly 150 years ago her family planted roots in Lodi—both figuratively and literally. And in 2006, the Lange’s expanded their property to house a largescale winery that prompted the next generation to return home to the family farm where they grew up. As the fifth-generation to work for the family business, Kendra plays a pivotal role at LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards. She holds the reins as the winery’s Marketing Manager, handling the creation of hospitality and wholesale marketing materials. It’s an often-overlooked aspect of a family business, but it’s a vital role. Making great wine is a craft; selling the wine is an entirely different beast. It takes a talented marketing team to create a story that not only sells but resonates.

Sharing a story that creates buzz and excitement is what Kendra loves most. Her favorite step along that journey? Releasing a wine’s newest vintage. “I get to sit down with the winemakers, listen to their unique approach to, and description of the wine, and of course—taste it!” she beams. “It’s a time when the team has an opportunity to have an open dialogue.” Taste testing some of Lodi’s best wines certainly sounds more appealing than sitting in front of a computer all day—but Kendra’s time spent implementing and managing a behind-the-scenes platform that supports LangeTwins’ sales team is one of her greatest accomplishments. “It helped to streamline the winery’s efficiency on fulfilling requests,” Kendra adds. And as the requests continue to flow, Kenda and LangeTwins continue to grow!

Q. What makes the Lodi Wine region unique? A. There is a passion that permeates the Lodi region-from the farmers that carry the proud connection to the land, to the families, winemakers and all those involved in telling a brand’s story. The brands are authentic. The people are rooted. The wines are truthful.

Q. What is an important lesson you have learned from the previous generation in your family business? A. There are no shortcuts. Do the job right. Take your time to think things through to make good decisions and be prepared. I use this advice in making decisions both large and small.

MADELYN RIPKEN KOLBER SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR

KG Vineyard Management, LLC As a third-generation farmer, Madelyn knows the pressure of preserving a business for future generations. Her three children are often in tote when visiting vineyards or monitoring various projects in the field. It’s time spent with her children on the farm that makes all the hard work worth it. “If you are passionate about what you do,” she says, “The next generation can be inspired to follow in your footsteps.” Madelyn is the Sustainability Director for KG Vineyard Management, where she certifies roughly 1,500 acres with the Lodi Rules Program for Sustainability. She also assists other growers and clients in the region as they work through the certification process. It’s a job that requires meticulous detail and a passion for preserving the land. Her greatest feat to date was just this past April when the company was awarded the Green Medal Award for Community. It was a huge accomplishment for the

business and one that celebrates KG’s efforts to honor their legacy of generational farming and authentic business practices. Q. What makes Lodi Wine or the Lodi Wine region unique? A. Our sub AVAs differ drastically across the region and produce unique world class wines! I love how committed our farming families are to their craft...we have an amazing product and stories to share! Q. What do you love most about your job? A. Not my work chair. Not the constant car washes. Not the complaints about the water at work. But, seriously…. I love working with a great team of smart and dedicated people. I love being a farmer! Growing exceptional wine grapes that produce award-winning wines gives me a great sense of pride.

KIMBERLY METTLER EELLS GENERAL MANAGER

Mettler Family Vineyards If you know anything about Lodi Wine, you know the Mettler Family has been farming wine grapes since 1899. As the fifth generation to carry on her family’s tradition, Kim Mettler Eells knows she isn’t just building a life for herself, but a lasting legacy for generations to come. After earning a Master’s Degree in counseling psychology from the University of the Pacific in 2000, Kim’s family decided to diversify the business and launched their wine brand, Mettler Family Vineyards. That one decision completely changed the course of her career. As the Vineyard’s General Manager, she jokes that her role is “generally” anything from human resources to label design, event coordination, and everything in between. She handles the wineries national sales and focuses on in-

60

creasing exposure in the export market. But, the woman wearing many hats doesn’t stop there—as a part of the California Wine Institute and the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s Marketing Committee, Kim is deeply devoted to the industry and the region that makes it all possible. “It gives me great joy to be able to offer a quality product and continue to spread the message of the Lodi Wine Region,” Kim says. Her most significant accomplishment since taking the helm? The completion of their tasting room. “At the time my youngest daughter was only three years old and always on the job site,” Kim shares. Reflecting on that time in her life—juggling an expansion project, wine brand, and motherhood—she realizes that, with a deep breath and a glass of wine, all things are possible!

Q. What is a valuable lesson you have learned from the previous generation within your family business?

A. Growing up in a farming family, I learned to have a strong work ethic. No task can be above you. As a mother, with daughters growing up in the business, it’s so important to me that they know how to work. The “princess mentality” doesn’t go over well in our house.

varietals. People come for the Old Vine Zinfandels of Lodi, but once they visit, they can experience Lodi’s other unique varietals. At Mettler Family Vineyards we grow Aglianico, Pinotage, and Albarino, and these wines are available for visitors to enjoy. Oh! And did I mention Lodi has the best farmers around? Great wines come from well-farmed vineyards, and Lodi has some of the best!

KIM LEDBETTER BRONSON CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Vino Farms LLC. Kim Ledbetter Bronson knows a thing or two about taking the helm of a multi-generational family business. As the Chief Financial Officer for Vino Farms, Kim bears the weight of her family’s farming operation every single day, overseeing all financial and legal activities for the business that farms over 17,000 acres of wine grapes throughout California. “When I started my journey with Vino Farms 20 years ago, I had many people tell me that 75 percent of family businesses fail in the third generation,” Kim says. “Not only has the third generation not failed, but we are continually growing our business—so much so that the second generation has been able to take a step back.”

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

And while Kim is leading the pack at Vino Farms, she also plays a pivotal role in the wine grape growing industry. She proudly served as the first female and first second-generation Chair for the California Association of Winegrape Growers. After serving 17 years on almost two dozen industry organization as a board member, Kim shifted her focus from industry organizations to serve on community boards that directly impact her two sons. Her advice for other women looking to get into the wine industry is simple: join industry organizations, not only at the local level, but at the state and federal level, too. “It is not only the most efficient way to get up to speed on industry topics, but it’s a great networking tool.”

Q. What is an important lesson you have learned from the previous generation in your family business? A. Our core family values of hard work, integrity, innovation, vision, and the importance of leadership.

Q. What makes Lodi Wine or the Lodi Wine region unique?

A. The willingness to share information between growers and the small-town feel of family owned wineries.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

Ages

From a young age, kids begin to learn the importance of brushing their teeth and having a healthy smile. As adults, our smiles are linked to our confidence. So why does oral health and hygiene so often fall through the cracks? It doesn’t matter if you’re 90 days old or 90 years old, it’s never too late to fix your smile, and it’s certainly never too late to become an advocate for your child’s smile, too.

Pregnancy Did you know that a healthy mouth starts before a baby is even born? A mother’s habits during her pregnancy can have lasting effects on a child’s oral health. Not to mention, oral care habits during pregnancy have a profound effect on a mother’s oral health, too. The fluctuations in hormones can make pregnant women more susceptible to gum and bone disease, and problems in the mouth can lead to pre-term delivery or a baby with low birth weight. So, what can you do about it? Make sure

to get regular dental checkups during pregnancy, report any new symptoms, and eat a healthy diet with plenty of calcium to support healthy bones and teeth for your baby.

Kids One of the most important things to remember about proper dental care for kids is to start early. The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit no later than age one or six months after the eruption of their first tooth. After that, regular checkups are recommended. A big reason for that first appointment is educating the parents and teaching them about preventative care. Not all parents understand the importance of caring for a child’s mouth even before teeth erupt because they don’t understand the science behind cavities and tooth decay. A child who drinks breast milk or formula still needs to have their gums and any visible teeth wiped down with a washcloth or an ageappropriate toothbrush-like device.

2018 TRENDS

DENTISTRY F E AT U R E

Too many parents live by the notion that baby teeth aren’t important because they fall out, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. “Baby teeth are important for growth and development,” says Dr. Rafat S. Razi, a pediatric dentist in Tracy. “They provide space for permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth provide [a] pathway for healthy permanent teeth.” Dr. Pankaj Patel, DMD, and owner of Salida Surgery Center, warns against feeding young kids too much juice or other sugary beverages. This can lead to bottle rot, where the four front upper teeth decay due to the sugars in the milk

66

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

or other beverages being given. Baby teeth remain in a kid’s mouth until about age 13. The front ones come out sooner, but the molars and other teeth in the back are part of a child’s mouth for a long time, making it even more important to take care of them. At Salida Surgery Center kids come in for full mouth restorations, sometimes addressing 15-20 cavities at once. “The most common thing is that parents aren’t brushing the teeth of these kids,” Dr. Patel explains. As parents it’s important to watch for signs that your child could have cavities or other oral issues. Dr. Razi says to look for pain, discomfort while eating or drinking, and waking in the middle of the night. Parents also may be able to see visible decay, swelling, redness, and loose teeth if they look closely. These are all potential signs of an oral problem that needs professional attention. Dr. Patel adds that children may not always be able to express what pain they are feeling and the signs could be less obvious. For example, a picky eater could have an unhealthy mouth. Sometimes kids will insist they do not like foods because they associate eating

them with pain. For kids who have significant dental issues, Salida Surgery Center in Salida offers a solution. The typical patient at Salida is between the ages of two and 17 and they need a lot of work done. The surgery center refers to its procedures as full mouth restorations or complete oral dental restorations. In many cases this means working on 15-20 cavities at a time, or completing several extractions at once. The goal at Salida is to do all of the work in one appointment. This streamlines the care process and keeps kids from coming in again and again to address serious oral issues. It’s also all done under general anesthesia so kids aren’t awake for the procedures, which can be lengthy. And to help calm their fears, the parents are allowed to hold their children while they fall asleep. As kids grow they will meet many oral milestones. One of the most exciting milestones is losing that first tooth, and the subsequent teeth after. Other kids may loose that first tooth through an extraction, but there are still ways to make it special. Celebrate the milestone with a fun ritual to make positive oral memories for your child. The more good things you can associate with oral care, the more positive feelings your child will have toward it as they grow. Another important milestone is independence. As children get older they will become able to take care of their own teeth. This doesn’t mean parents should take a backseat to oral care. It is still important to schedule regular check-ups, remind children to brush and floss, and to monitor oral care to ensure children are doing a thorough job. Proper diet is another big part of oral care. Kids who eat too many sugary or acidic foods that could erode their teeth are doing long-term damage to their mouths. Encourage healthy eating and plenty of low- or no-sugar snacks. If your child likes gum, opt for a sugar-free brand and always avoid over-serving soda, juice, or other sugary beverages. Sometimes it’s the simplest gesture that can make all of the difference. For example, most dental offices hand out free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss at every check-up. For families that are strapped for cash, this could mean a child gets their own toothbrush or gets a new toothbrush for the first time, practices that are imperative for supporting oral health.

SMILE

for Kids & Adults AESTHETICS

Keeping a mouth healthy is important and it lends to having a beautiful smile in the long run. Some kids, especially those with severe crowding or spacing or jaw discrepancies such as an under bite or overbite, may lack confidence in their smile. Luckily, these issues can typically be righted through orthodontics, but sometimes kids have to wait until their bones mature or their permanent teeth come in to undergo these treatments. Talk with children about the importance of liking themselves and try to instill a sense of self-confidence in them. These issues are temporary, but if kids don’t like their smiles it can affect other parts of their social lives. Under no circumstance, however, should kids

68

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

under the age of 13 get their teeth professionally bleached. While a whiter smile may sound like a confidence-booster, abrasive bleaching materials can cause serious sensitivities. At Dr. Cameron Wheeler’s Stockton office Wheeler Orthodontics, he puts a lot of braces on kids. There are misconceptions that having braces can break a child’s confidence. Dr. Wheeler, however, says his experience shows the opposite to be true. “We have had patients tell us that getting braces is an answer to his/her prayer, because they hated to even smile for pictures or for friends, and we would even see sometimes they would hide the teeth and smile behind their hand,” Dr. Wheeler shares. “But once their teeth started to line up, you could easily see their confidence grow exponentially.”

ARE YOU

AFRAID OF THE DENTIST?

Whether you have dental fear, dental anxiety, or dental phobia, it’s important you don’t let that problem get in the way of seeing a dentist. By delaying visits and relying on symptom-driven treatment, you are only exacerbating the problem. Not only are you more likely to suffer serious dental problems as a result of skipping appointments, but also having an unhealthy mouth makes those rare visits less pleasant and only leads to additional fear and discomfort about seeing the dentist in the future. “There are several ways we help patients with dental anxiety, such as utilizing new injection techniques, providing medication for anxiety, and gentle patient care,” Dr. Inong says. The goal is to get the patient in the chair regardless of their fears about seeing the dentist. By taking anti-anxiety medication before an appointment and being honest with your dentist about your fears, treatments can become more tolerable, especially over time.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

One of the chief complaints from adults is that aesthetically they do not like their smile, but the reasons why are vast. While some patients complain of crooked teeth, stained or yellowed teeth, or chipped teeth, misalignment plagues others. In other cases poor oral health leads to smile insecurities, bleeding gums, or complaints about chronic bad breath. Dr. Maywell L. Inong, DDS, a practicing dentist in Stockton, said one of the most common complaints she gets from adult patients is about gum recession. This causes several problems with aesthetics including that teeth look darker at the gum line, food gets caught in teeth more easily, and teeth appear long. To fix the aesthetics associated with gum recession, Dr. Inong offers patients gum grafts to cover the root surfaces as well as bonding or crowns to restore the worn tooth structure. Most important, patients should address the cause behind gum recession. Poor oral hygiene can lead to excessive or early gum recession. While aesthetics are important, the most important part of good oral care is oral health. “Many patients are unaware of the relation between oral health and their overall health,” Dr. Inong shares. “Patients don't realize that the bacteria in the mouth can effect other parts of the body.” In fact, studies have shown a correlation

between oral health and diabetes, heart disease, and pre-term pregnancy. “It is important for patients with these health issues to see their dentist on a regular basis.” Routine cleanings, x-rays, and check-ups are the key to preventative care. If a dentist sees a patient often, they can catch potential problems before they escalate because a patient may not realize they have tooth decay, cavities, plaque build-up, or other potentially harmful issues until they see a professional.

Orthodontics means more than just braces, and every age group has their own unique orthodontic needs. Dr. Wheeler treats patients age six-85 in his office. “The basic truth is teeth can move at any age, so it is never to late,” Dr. Wheeler says. At a young age, the focus is on maximizing space in the child’s mouth to allow teeth to grow in well. When permanent teeth come in to an overcrowded mouth, problems occur. When proper room has been made through braces or extractions it enhances facial harmony and helps the patient to achieve functional and aesthetic ideals. Most people head to an orthodontist when their child is ready for braces, but the truth is you should seek out an orthodontist anytime you see a problem on the horizon. An orthodontist should screen all children by age seven to start putting together a care plan. Most patients won’t need orthodontic care that young, but because this is the time when the permanent incisors are erupting, clues on how the remaining teeth and jaw will develop are evident at this time. “If significant discrepancies are seen, early, interceptive treatment can be initiated to address those concerns before they develop into complicated problems later,” Dr. Wheeler explains. As adults, orthodontics can fix teeth for both function and aesthetics. Teeth keep moving even after braces, so even if a person has had braces in the past they may need orthodontic intervention later in life, as well.

The number one complaint Dr. Wheeler says he hears from adult patients is about having crowded or misaligned teeth that continue to get worse overtime. Their crowded teeth often lead to other issues like insufficient brushing and flossing, gum problems and recession, chips and abnormal wear, and muscle and joint discomfort. The second biggest complaint is that they didn’t take care of the problem sooner. Adults have many more options for care than kids do with treatment plans ranging from very limited and shortterm, such as aligning rotated teeth or fixing gaps, to providing full comprehensive treatment addressing multiple concerns and issues. It is important for adult orthodontic patients to be honest and realistic about their expectations, sharing this information with their orthodontist. “Together we can work to formulate the best possible, tailored-fit plan,” Dr. Wheeler says. “Explore your options and find out what can be achieved.”

Toward this goal, she has been a leader in the field of dentistry by always endeavoring to become certified in the latest medical technology breakthroughs and surgical techniques that she feels can ensure better treatment success for her patients. As an example, Dr. Inong is the only dentist within 100 miles of the Stockton area that is an experienced practitioner in the use of Pinhole Surgery Technique (PST) to treat gum recession by eliminating the need for painful gum grafts and long months of healing times that were seen in the past. Treatment recovery times for this new procedure have been reduced to just days with minor to no pain at all. Though she has been given many opportunities over the years to expand her practice to multiple offices, she has decided that by having just one location with her as the sole dentist on staff, it is the best way to maintain a personal relationship with her patients to attend properly to treating their individual health needs.

Do you want to restore that youthful smile or replace missing teeth? Do you want to prevent dental problems? Do you have a toothache? We all have different priorities and reasons for going to the dentist, but one thing is certain: We don’t want to spend a lot of time there. Our goal is to care for your dental health while making everything as convenient, comfortable, and economical as possible. Today’s high technology allows dental work to be done in much less time and with minimal expense, but still provides long lasting, esthetic restorations.   Experience for yourself our family-like atmosphere and personal service. Priscilla from Modesto says, “I couldn’t believe I got my cosmetic work done in one appointment, with no temporaries.” John from Stockton says, “I’ve had root canals and crowns done before, but I’ve never had a root canal and crown done in one visit. I’ll never go back to the old way of fixing teeth.” Brian from Missouri says, “I was in Stockton with a dental emergency and Dr. Noriesta fixed my tooth in one appointment. I couldn’t find a dentist like Dr. Noriesta in Missouri, so I drove back to Stockton and got the rest of my crowns done in one appointment.”

DENTAL CARE

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE As we age, our bones lose density and become more brittle. It’s also not uncommon to get sick more often and stay sicker for longer. Oral health is no different than any other physical health conditions for seniors; being older simply increases risk. But what oral issues should seniors be most concerned about? Anything that threatens overall health is especially concerning. For example, teeth that are not well cared for become subject to tooth and root decay, thrush, and gum disease that can lead to tooth loss and an uneven jaw bone. Advanced gum disease has been linked to cardiovascular problems, a family of conditions that seniors are already more susceptible to, and other health ailments that affect the the whole body—not just the mouth.

THE GOOD LIFE

When someone you love isn’t getting better, turn to VITAS in San Joaquin. Working with your doctor, we can visit your loved one, complete an evaluation, discuss your goals of care and arrange for hospice services that help the whole family. Don’t know what next steps to take or where to turn?

DID YOU KNOW? Oral health issues don’t just affect the mouth. Common issues for seniors such as gingivitis and periodontal disease can lead to a slew of other serious health problems. The good news? These issues are not only preventable but also treatable by a medical professional! So keep those regular check-ups coming!

Turn to VITAS.

VITAS.com 800.723.3233

GINGIVITIS

Simply put, gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. When brushing, flossing, and professional oral care isn’t consistent, plaque or bacteria can easily accumulate on the teeth, resulting in gingivitis. Certain medications, malnutrition, wounds, and foreign objects such as dentures can also assist in the formation of this infection. Studies show that substances released from inflamed and infected gums can kill brain cells and even spread from the mouth to nerve channels and enter the bloodstream, resulting in dementia and Alzheimer’s. The issue can resolve with good oral hygiene, so act quickly when gums are red and puffy or bleed when brushing!

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

Untreated gingivitis frequently progresses to periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. This condition ranges from slight inflammation to serious soft tissue, gum, and bone damage that could easily result in the loss of teeth. Smoking, hormone changes, diabetes, and certain medications that cause dry mouth can influence the likelihood of periodontal disease. Because the condition is an infection, it weakens the immune system—heightening chances of additional infections and even Kidney Disease. Professional removal of bacteria from the mouth and gums can slow or even dismiss the disease!

ROUTINE VISITS

The best way to avoid serious oral ailments is to stay up to date on checkups. All adults should be seeing a dentist once every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. Those with early stages of gum disease may benefit from quarterly cleanings instead. Seniors should also schedule an appointment anytime they feel pain in the gums, teeth, or another area of the mouth. Sometimes serious oral health conditions show up with little to no warning signs, meaning if you aren’t seeing a dentist often, you could be missing a gingivitis diagnosis or even cavities. Mouth cancer is known for having very few, if any, symptoms at first so only a dentist might catch it, and once adults hit about 60 years old they enter a second round of cavity-prone years, which could mean a person who rarely had cavities before is now at increased risk of developing them even without a change in hygiene habits.

OVERALL HEALTH AFFECTS TEETH

If you suffer from other ailments, as most people in their 60s and beyond do, you could be at risk for poor oral health. For example, those with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease, which can lead to tooth decay and even tooth loss. Another culprit is dry mouth, a seemingly mild issue that can increase the risk for cavities. The worst part? Many medications for a wide range of conditions list dry mouth as a common side effect, so if you take medications for another health issue, you’re more likely to suffer from the negative effects of dry mouth, too. Seniors with osteoporosis are especially susceptible to periodontal disease, tooth loss, and issues with the jawbone because the ailment affects the bones. Aging, menopause, and lack of vitamin D and calcium all increase a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis and while you can’t avoid the first two, eating a diet that includes adequate amounts of vitamin D and calcium may help.

DENTURES

Every year it seems the number of people maintaining natural teeth is going up. With that said, many seniors do still rely on partial or full dentures at some point in their life, and taking care of those dentures is as vital as caring for natural teeth. Having dentures doesn’t mean a patient can forgo dental visits. It’s still essential for a dentist to routinely check the mouth and gums. It is also important to routinely have your dentures assessed to assure they are in good shape and fit properly. Ill-fitting dentures can lead to pain, sores, and other oral issues. Perhaps the most critical aspect of caring for dentures, however, is frequent cleaning because plaque can build up on dentures just as it can on natural teeth.

Enjoy the sea-salt air and lapping waves as you wine and dine your way through town.  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Just a couple hours from San Joaquin County, the seaside town of Monterey sits on California’s Central Coast. Once best known as the busiest trade port in the state of California, the ocean city soon grew to attract artists and fisherman. Today, Monterey is perhaps best known for its state-of-the-art aquarium, Fisherman’s Wharf, and infamous chain eatery Bubba Gump’s. But there’s much more to explore without stepping foot in these well-known tourist attractions. Instead, experience Monterey like never before, enjoying the sea-salt air and lapping waves as you wine and dine your way through town.

THE WINE Wine

Experience Looking to do a little more than taste? Monterey’s The Wine Experience offers interactive vino-centric experiences for guests. In addition to social tastings, the Cannery Row establishment invites wine lovers to create their own blends in a classroom-style environment, design bottles and labels to store your elixir in, and even craft your own wines in the onsite micro-winery. All of this plus local craft beers, private parties, and wine tasting classes that teach how to identify aromas, tannins, and other flavor profiles in your favorite wines! WineExperience.org

As lovers of Lodi wine, San Joaquinians often like to explore other AVAs in the state, comparing the tastes of the San Joaquin Valley with California’s coastal favorites. Monterey offers plenty of opportunities to sip grapes from Mendocino to Santa Cruz and the tasting rooms are concentrated in Cannery Row, making it easy to visit several quaint tasting rooms bursting with savory aromas of vanilla and spice, cherry and blackberry. CanneryRow.com Within just one building sits several of the best tasting rooms in the region. Pourers at each are friendly and encourage tasters to take their time selecting the best bottles to bring home. A stop at Bargetto Winery is a must. The tasting room’s reserve list is worth the extra charge, offering guests’ sips of the winery’s most coveted collectibles. For a taste of nostalgia ask about the winery’s Chaucer dessert wines, the varietals that first helped Bargetto gain notoriety in the 1930s. Bargetto.com Next up visit Blue Fox Cellars, located upstairs. Switching gears from Bargetto’s Santa Cruz wines, tasters will enjoy the refined taste of Blue Fox’s

Mendocino grapes. Here, the atmosphere is as serene as you’d expect Monterey to be. Watch the Pacific Ocean out the tasting room windows while throwing back a collection of reds and whites. The label’s Syrah is a must try when it’s on the menu. BlueFoxCellars.com Before you leave the building, add a tasting at Carmel Ridge Winery, Monterey and Carmel’s hometown vineyard. An even offering of reds and whites boasting ideal blends of acidity and sweetness, a tasting at Carmel Ridge offers 92

winos a little bit of everything. Sip the coveted Pinot Noirs the Valley is known for before diving into a lineup of refreshing whites and rosé. CarmelRidgeWinery.com Take a small walk through Cannery Row to hit the last stop on our list. Pierce Ranch Vineyards offers a bustling tasting room located on Wave Street. When we visited, this tasting room had a lively atmosphere and plenty of guests; bar seats were filled and new patrons had to enjoy standing room only. The wines here come from the Bradley-Lockwood area at the southernmost tip of Monterey County, a region that enjoys long daytime hours that ripen fruit consis-

tently year-round, a rarity in the rest of the county. Pick and choose tastes from the menu or grab a whole glass to finish your afternoon. The menu packs plenty of reds, whites, rosés, and dessert wines. PierceVineyards.com Most wineries waive tasting fees ($20-25 at the places above) when guests purchase bottles. Ask if the wineries will hold onto your goods until the next morning so you don’t have to cart cases from joint to joint. Take note of the opening hour, too, some tasting rooms don’t open until noon, which means you won’t be able to leave Monterey (why would you want to?!) before then.

Where to Stay There is no shortage of hotels in Monterey, and plenty of them are near the epicenter of this vacation’s best selections. Prices however are always steep. It’s often best to pick a budget and go from there.

Luxury

Before You Go A trip to Monterey is never complete without ample time spent on the beach. In nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Carmel Beach trail is an easy walk offering ocean views and breathtaking beachfront properties. Walk down the beach on your way there

and circle back on the paved road above the sand to enjoy the best of both worlds. The 1.3-mile out-andback trail is moderately-trafficked and on weekends the beach is filled with locals, visitors, families, and dogs. Ocean Avenue, Carmel

Perched on wooden stilts over the Pacific Ocean, the Monterey Plaza Hotel is prime real estate in Monterey Bay. The beachfront property grants guests gorgeous views of the crashing surf and it doesn’t skimp on amenities. Retire to a room just upstairs from Schooners with a full belly and awake to a spa appointment that will revitalize you from the indulgences of the day before. Treat mind, body, and soul at Vista Blue Spa with massages, facials, bath soaks, and other body treatments. MontereyPlazaHotel.com

Mid-Range Enjoy a more intimate experience at the Best Western Plus Victorian Inn. Located in Cannery Row, the boutique hotel is walking distance to most of the stops on your itinerary. Enjoy a little slice of heaven with sliding doors open to the courtyard, fireplaces, and complimentary breakfast. Stay in a standard room or book a family suite. BestWestern.com

Budget At the Arbor Inn Monterey budget isn’t a bad thing. The high quality inn features fireplaces, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning (which can be hard to find in other coastal hotel rooms). With modern features guests are paying a little less for forgoing on-site extras and a few extra miles between the hotel and the beach. ArborInnMonterey.com 94

Dinner

Lunch Looking for a laidback meal between winery stops? The Cannery Row Brewing Company brings a downtown feel to an otherwise uptown weekend, serving up quality American bar food with local brews. It’s a welcome escape from the high-end and hipster that dominates the rest of this list. Fun fact: The eatery boasts the second largest number of brews on tap in all of Northern California. Say bye-bye to your diet while you indulge in Guinness battered corn dogs, panko-crusted sand dabs, short rib grilled cheeses, and salted caramel waffle jars for dessert. If lunch falls in between Cannery Row tastings, step into A Taste of Monterey – Wine Market & Bistro. Located in the same building as three of our four featured wineries above, the chic, ocean-view eatery is onepart wine tasting, one-part foodie heaven. The menu is light, as is the fare, but the wine list is heavy. Satisfy your need for carbs with a coastal carnivore flatbread pizza and order roasted Castroville artichokes on the side. Top it off with a flight of three wines—there’s a variety of options to choose from. ATasteofMonterey.com

Schooners Coastal Kitchen & Bar is loved by locals and visitors for two reasons: The food and the ambiance. Inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel, you don’t need to be a guest to score a table. Suspended over the Monterey Bay, window seats put you above the water and offer miles of ocean views beyond the salt and peppershakers. The menu’s sustainable seafood is its main draw—when we ate there we dined on swordfish—but it also packs plenty of steaks and American comfort food (order up a side of gourmet mac’ n cheese, too!). The extensive wine list offers the best nightcap for the evening and can be enjoyed with appetizers, dinner, and dessert—phyllo brick crème brulèe, anyone? SchoonersMonterey.com Once you’ve finished your meal, stay to enjoy the view, and then head to the beach where you can stroll barefoot in the soft sand before turning in for the night.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, someone who enjoys the occasional libation, or just a local looking for some seriously delectable bites, Arturo Zarate is ready to welcome you to Mile Wine. It was in January of 2018 when Arturo, after over 30 years in the restaurant business, took ownership of this beloved Miracle Mile establishment. And in just a short amount of time, he’s stamped his personal touch on this hip eatery that serves so much more than wine. “Hospitality is in my blood,” says Arturo. And clearly, good taste is, too.

need pairing suggestions, or you just want some simple guidance, you need feel no apprehension about rolling up to Mile Wine with little to no knowledge about wine. With their seasoned servers ready to assist, even first-time wine drinkers are sure to have a great experience. “Our inventory of wine and beer is designed to meet a wide range of tastes, no matter the sophistication of the individual,” Arturo assures. And yes, you read that right— they offer beer, too! Just like their wines, their beer selection is based on what is currently trending in the local and craft beer scene.

In addition to their already bustling Sunday brunch, Mile Wine’s regular menu is laden with culinary delights. And with a focus on local, seasonal produce, the menu changes every few months. Currently, unique and tantalizing options like Mexican street corn, a simple but delicious dish made with locally grown organic corn and a house made cream, is a huge hit. It’s as good as any elote you’ll get from a street cart, but with the added convenience of being able to eat it out of a bowl. Another international dish that draws in crowds are the Korean tacos, overflowing with tender, braised beef short ribs, and topped with house-made slaw and Korean BBQ sauce. If you’re looking for a more traditional side to accompany your drinks, Mile Wine always offers a fantastic charcuterie and cheese selection. And if you’re craving dessert, look no further than their warm, decadent chocolate bread pudding paired with cold, creamy vanilla bean ice cream.

But let’s be honest—many of us are being drawn in by the name. And with a carefully crafted selection of wines, you won’t be disappointed. Sofia, the Wine Steward, stocks the shelves based on the season, trends, and popular demand. “In the summertime, to beat the heat, we offer an expanded white wine and bubbly selection,” Arturo explains. In addition, they offer specialty drinks like white and red Sangria: The perfect antidote to stuffy summer evenings. For those wine lovers who are always on the lookout for tasty new options, Mile Wine has a wine club that offers a broad selection of local and internationally acclaimed wines. It also gives members the opportunity to try wines from several different wineries and vineyards in one tasting. “Our wine club is designed for our members to find and taste hidden treasures,” promises Arturo. But what about those of us who enjoy a glass of wine yet don’t feel confident enough to order something new? Whether you

So, next time you’re meandering down the Mile, stop on in. Foodie, wine, and beer aficionados alike are guaranteed to love this place. But, Arturo promises, Mile Wine is also for anyone looking for something as simple as a special place to enjoy time with family and friends. “I love taking care of people,” he says. ROOTED in off the vine

HISTORY

BARSETTI WINERY & VINEYARDS  BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER

When Janis Barsetti Gray was deciding on a place to open her wine-tasting room with her husband Richard in 2014, she could have chosen Lodi. After all, Lodi was at the heart San Joaquin’s reputable wine industry. It made total sense for her to set up shop there. But she didn’t. As the age-old adage goes, grow where you’re planted—for Janis, that was Galt. Both her family roots and the roots of her zinfandel vines were firmly entrenched in Galt’s fertile soil, thanks to her Grandfather’s journey to America over a century ago. It was 1903 when Gottardo Barsetti made his way to California, driven by a dream of owning and farming his own land. After years of hard work, he made that dream a reality, settling down in Galt in 1912. Today, Janis is not only aware of her family history, but loyal to it. “It’s very important to me that I feel like I’m part of the community that my ancestors came to,” says Janis. 106

Such sentiment is evident in many of Barsetti Vineyard’s wines—check out the Old Town Red, the crowd-pleasing red blend featuring a label depicting a scene of OldTown Galt in the 1800s. A fruit-driven wine, this blend boasts ripe, dark fruit flavors, accented by spicy notes and framed by a firm structure. More old photographs of Galt line the walls of Barsetti’s tasting room, which opened in December of 2014. Make sure to pay them a visit, not only for the local history and good company, but for a taste of Barsetti’s award winning wines, such as the 2015 Petite Sirah. “It’s actually a wine that I dedicated to my husband after he passed away,” Janis says. “On its label is a picture of a sunset scene from our house in Bellingham, Wa s h i n g t o n . ” A strong yet subtle

wine, it plays along plum and dark berry fruit flavors with just a touch of spiciness. With 19 varieties of wine offered at Barsetti, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy. Aside from their popular red blends, Janis says, “if you like sweet wines, people love the Mango Mischief. Its base is pinot grigio infused with real mango.” Featuring live music on Fridays and Saturday nights, as well as a variety of cool classes in which you can learn to paint, bead bracelets, and arrange flowers while you sip on a refreshing glass of wine, there’s no better way to take part in community culture and get a taste of local history than to spend an evening in the rustic tasting room of Barsetti Vineyards.

meet the maker

WINEDINE 209

MEET

MAKER HEATHER PYLE-LUCAS,

THE LUCAS WINERY D

ALY MONTEZ

HOW’D YOU GET STARTED?

I do not come from an agricultural background, but I fell in love with wine and winemaking while studying for my bachelor’s degree in Zoology at U.C. Davis. I went on to get a master’s degree in winemaking.

WHAT’S YOUR WINEMAKING STYLE?

Traditional, for sure. Hands off. Minimal inputs. I spend a lot of time in the vineyard trying to get the fruit just right. I want the wines to speak of the place they were grown and the vintage. Most of all, I want them to be delicious at the table, with food.

WHAT WINES DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FROM?

The great wines of Europe have been my inspiration in that they reflect a long history of sorting out and settling down within a discipline that, only rarely, creates something that makes you sit up and take notice. California has great potential and even great wines, but Europe is where I find our roots.

IN THE WORLD OF WINE, WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOU MOST?

Charles Thomas, Robert Mondavi’s long-time winemaker, and my mentor from 1985 to 1996 infused in me an attention to detail, a love of the craft, and the importance of being out in the vineyard. His kindness was an added bonus. He is my winemaking hero.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WINE YOU’VE MADE?

The 2009 Lucas ZinStar Zinfandel Reserve would be my favorite. It was made in honor of David Lucas’ daughter Mitra’s wedding, and also it is a dynamite wine from a wonderful and historic vineyard.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE WINE MAKING PROCESS?

It’s all fun and new every year, but I really like the process of fermentation when we see, for the first time, what is to become of the grapes we and Mother Nature have so carefully tended during the season.

WHAT DO YOU MOST ADMIRE IN THE WORLD OF LODI WINE, AND WHY?

Lodi as a premium wine region is charming, earnest, innocent, and ambitious. There is great potential here and we have the benefit of the freshness of youth. Lodi winery owners and winemakers still greet their guests personally to introduce their wines and tell their stories. That is priceless.

WINEDINE 209

BEHIND theKNIFE: ERICK SILVA, STREETZLAN “THE STREET FOOD PROJECT”  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

“With this project, we are paying homage to the underrated culinary culture of the streets. The roots from where it all began. With no boundaries or set standards, we are just cooking the food we love.” You will see this mantra on a framed chalkboard upon entering the doors of one of our region’s best-kept secrets, Streetzlan “The Street Food Project.” Nestled in charming downtown Galt, owner and chef Erick Silva is pumping out serious eats for food enthusiasts from near and far. Chef Silva never anticipated owning a restaurant. In fact, he admits that growing up he never knew that you could have a career in the culinary world. But after seeing an advertisement for the California Culinary Academy, he took a leap of faith and registered for culinary school. In Erick’s words, “Culinary School opened a door I never knew existed.”

Usually describing a chef’s culinary style is simple. But that isn’t the case for Erick. It isn’t fusion food. It isn’t Mexican food. It’s good food: Food that is artistic, food that is fresh, food that packs flavor and balance in every bite. You could say Chef Silva is transforming traditional California dishes and putting his modern twist on them. After culinary school, Erick landed a fine-dining gig in Laguna Beach, working under the tutelage of a European chef who had all the talent, technique, 110

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

and attitude of a highly skilled culinary master. But the tool Erick took away from his time there was discipline. That discipline landed him a job as the head chef for Hewlett Packard in the Bay Area. And while it was a good learning experience, it wasn’t long before Erick felt his culinary creativity stifled. He longed for more creative liberty with his cuisine and made a major life decision to move his family to the Valley. In 2016, Chef Silva started Knifelyfe Catering, where he served up his meddling of food and culture at festivals, weddings, markets, and private events. He kept his overhead low and slowly invested in items that helped him pump out his delicious dishes. After the overwhelming reception to Erick’s grub—and great timing on a brick and mortar location—he and his wife Jessica jumped at the chance to open their own restaurant. Streetzlan opened its doors in February of 2017, where Chef Silva serves up delicious dishes like the

Plumitas, a beer and lime marinated chicken with garlic and ginger potatoes, salsa verde, raw escabeche, and micro cilantro on a crispy corn tortilla shell. Can you say, ‘Yes, please?’ Another favorite is the King Sliders, loaded with certified Angus beef, char siu pork belly, togarashi mayo, and micro sprouts on a buttery sesame brioche bun. The biggest challenge for Erick today, “Keeping up with the growing popularity of the restaurant,” he says. “And funneling my creative energy into foods that are smart and make sense.” Our thoughts? The food is smart, well-seasoned, and flavorful. We suggest you head to Downtown Galt to taste the tantalizing flavors that make Streetzlan a local favorite. You will not be disappointed! FAT CITY BREW & BBQ

DON KING’S CALIFORNIA TWIST ON A SOUTHERN STAPLE  BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER Sometimes, the stars just align. That’s a truth that Don King, owner and chef at Fat City Brew and Barbeque, has learned to trust by now. After a series of synchronicities and happy coincidences, Don went from burning steaks to a crisp in 2010 to being a fullblown chef in 2018, cooking up some of best barbeque in Northern California. Starting out as co-owner of a barbeque supply store in Marengo Center, Don developed an interest in cooking barbeque thanks to his business partner and good friend, Noah. “A year before we opened the supply store, I was going through a really difficult time,” remembers Don. “Noah came over to my house and said, ‘Let me cook ribs for you.’” Five hours later and still no ribs, Don was perplexed. What could possibly take this long to cook? Then, “I took one bite, and it changed everything,” says Don. “That’s why I’m here. I found a whole new side of me that I had no idea was there.” From there, things took off. The supply store started selling craft beer and became a regular haunt for locals looking for a place to chill out. After manning their business as a hobby for several years, Noah moved for a job opportunity. Don, however, stayed put. After happening upon the new space on Stockton’s Miracle Mile, he decided to cook food as a sort of side-note to his craft beer and supply store. Little did he know. “I was just going to make food that I liked and cook barbeque the way I like to cook it—I call it ‘California Style’—and it turned out to be great for us,” Don says. Today, Don prepares his wildly popular appetizer “Junk Nachos” for Good Day Sacramento, featuring any of Fat City’s excellent meats and “all the fixings,” including cheese, jalapenos, and chili beans, slathered in sauce. Back at the restaurant, Don says the Rib Sandwich is the crowd favorite and is one of his favorite meals to make, with the Tri-Tip sandwich coming in as a close second. “Sometimes I think it’s unreal,” says Don, referring to his restaurant’s immediate success. “Twelve years ago I was a shitty cook, and my friends wouldn’t eat my barbeque. That’s what’s so funny.” From melt-off-the-bone St. Louis rack ribs to the pulled pork

112

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2018

slathered in sweet and tangy sauce, Don says the secret to good barbeque is simply attention to detail. “I’ve never been so picky about stuff. I make sure every time we cook the meat, it’s cooked the exact same way so that there’s always consistency.” Don’s dedication isn’t borne out of a desire to be successful, but rather, out of love for what he does. “I found a whole new passion in life at 40,” says Don. “I tell people all the time that, at the end of the night, I can’t wait to go home and go to sleep so I can come back here the next day.” So, if you haven’t already, be sure to visit Don and his friendly staff at Fat City Brew and Barbeque. And keep an eye out for a possible Fat City 2.0. “Watch out, Lodi!” winks Don. GET YOUR GRUB ON: FAT CITY BREW & BBQ 1740 Pacific Ave., Stockton (209) 323-4920 Fat-City-Brew-BBQ.business.site

TOMATO TIME

ORIGINAL RECIPES BY THE FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER Do you know what time it is? It’s tomato time in San Joaquin County, and we can’t wait to sink our teeth into the juicy, ripe tomatoes grown right here in our backyard! No matter how you slice them, fresh from the farm tomatoes are a treat that needs to be devoured. It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that California is king when it comes to tomatoes. Accounting for more than 90 percent of the nation’s processed tomatoes, our region plays a pivotal role in the tomato market. And while California ranks a close second to Florida in fresh tomato production, our tomatoes are just as flavorful as the sunshine state. In California, the colorful tomatoes are planted from March through July for harvest from June through October. This means we get to enjoy them five months out of the year! And enjoy them we will! There is

GOLDEN BEAR RANCHES 114

|

nothing quite like sinking your teeth into a BLT made with vine-ripened tomatoes. Over the past couple of decades, you have seen a multitude of varieties pop up in our markets. From the small but sweet cherry tomatoes to the deep and flavorful heirloom tomatoes, they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors for our enjoyment. Tomatoes are downright tasty, but did you know they are also a terrific source of lycopene too? Lycopene is an antioxidant that is linked to the prevention of many types of cancer. In fact, the antioxidant fights free radicals that can interfere with healthy cell growth. Tomatoes also pack a healthy dose of Vitamin A and C and are naturally low in calories. Which is why they are a staple in summertime suppers: They are good for you and satisfy your cravings. You might think tomatoes are exclusive to Italian cuisine, but the truth is, you will

find them in Thai, French, and Greek dishes as crucial ingredients. Tomatoes can also be incorporated into a variety of recipes from salads, salsas, and sauces, which is why we’ve included a few of our favorites for you to try!

Did you know San Joaquin County is home to one of the nation’s finest fresh tomato farmers in the nation? Golden Bear Ranches produces over 65,000 plants and 50 varietals of heirloom tomatoes at its three Lodi area ranches. Their reputation speaks for itself, as they supply some of the nation’s finest restaurants with their products including The French Laundry, Bouchon, and Ad Hoc. You can also taste their heirloom tomatoes at local spots like Rosewood, Towne House Restaurant, Pietro’s, and Market Tavern!
