OF BOYS GETTING BACK

Looking at them, it’s hard to imagine that Chance, Ryan and Brandon suffer from asthma. But it was so severe at times, they had to be rushed to the emergency room. That’s when their mom turned to Sutter Health. Sutter pediatric specialists created a children’s asthma program to help kids like the Denier boys better manage their asthma and avoid dangerous episodes. Now they’re breathing much better, and back to being boys. Pardon us, cowboys. To hear the Denier boys’ full story visit us at sutterhealth.org/stories

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town The streets were all empty, the stores shutting down. I trudged through the streets, my head hung in despair Both my arms empty, no shopping bags hanging there. My wife would be mad, I hadn’t a doubt I had no excuses, no easy way out. In the hustle and bustle of making a living I’d forgotten entirely about the season of giving. Oh how my children would cry in dismay when they discovered no presents this Christmas day. As I plodded on through the blackening gloom trying to forestall my impending doom, a flashing in the distance caught my attention, my heart beat fast—I approached with apprehension. ‘Twas a neon sign, and it read (with some flowers): “Attention last-minute shoppers, we’re open 24 hours!” Oh how I jumped and shouted with glee, There would be Christmas after all for my family! I burst through the front doors, my gift list in hand, Pausing a moment to survey the land. The store was expansive, aisles piled high, with all sorts of goodies for my wife, children, and I. I hadn’t a moment to waste (my list was extensive), my wallet was full (this would be expensive). Three hours later, my funds were depleted, but my smile was broad, the list was completed! I had something for everyone, even for Rover, for my in-laws, and parents (who always come over). As you may guess, this story’s ending was happy but there is a moral (without sounding sappy). The message is this: To avoid any sorrow, do your shopping now, don’t wait ‘till tomorrow! Now for those who are groaning because this poem was trite, I simply must say …

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” Happy Holidays from all of us here at San Joaquin magazine! Thank you for a wonderful 2009. See you in 2010! 22

Hoop it Up Two ladies find a home with Pacific Women’s Basketball bY jereMY FLetcHer

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

With attendance at a combined eight schools between them since the start of high school and a bakers’ dozen worth of different jerseys, it’s not a stretch to say that University of the Pacific women’s basketball standouts Gretchen Tiernan and Shantel Thomas have taken an uncommon path to collegiate basketball prominence. To say they’ve finally found a happy home at Pacific is no less of an understatement. »

The combined play of Tiernan, a junior guard with a smooth jump shot, and Thomas, a high school guard turned intimidating college player, gives the Tigers a one-two punch unlike any in recent memory. While the two players took different routes to their current home in Stockton, including time spent in junior colleges, Santa Barbara, and Santa Clara, it’s important to note the bond the joins them. Their basketball journey started out in the same place, with the ladies on the same team, six years ago, on one of Northern California’s best AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) teams.   The fact that the Tigers’ two stars didn’t pick Pacific as their first choice right out of high school should come as no surprise—the University of the Pacific women’s basketball program was hardly anyone’s first choice as recently as three years ago. A program much in need of revival received just what it needed in Head Coach Lynne Roberts as well as an upstart staff that has taken the Tigers from Big West pretender to Big West contender.

A contender last season for the Big West Championship, the Pacific women’s basketball Snap Jackson

team has gained some swagger with the reemergence of the program. Here’s your chance to watch Tiernan, Thomas, and Lynne Roberts’ Tigers all season

Tiernan joined in during year three of the rebuilding process, followed by Thomas this past year, adding both an outside and inside game to the Pacific attack.   “This program just cares about us as more than a basketball player,” says Thomas, who left the UC Santa Barbara program when she was pregnant with her son. “The staff here cares about my son and what’s going on in my life, just like they care about my performance and us doing well on the court. That’s important to me.”   The same sentiment is echoed by Tiernan, who first made the move to Division I in Santa Clara before transitioning closer to home at American River College in Sacramento and then finally to the Tigers in 2008.   “That’s the thing that we share, other than having played together and knowing each other from high school,” she says. “We both thought that when we left school we’d never get to play basketball again, let alone at a Division I school, but things just worked out well and we got an opportunity at Pacific.”   It’s that opportunity to play again, and to be the backbone of the rebuilding process that’s starting to pay off for Pacific, and has made this transition a positive one for the ladies. The Tigers look to emerge as a more cohesive team and become a squad that will be a challenger for Big West contention. After all, the team is led by two players who didn’t let difficult situations phase them—they moved upwards and onwards. Would you expect anything different on the court? For more information:

The seasonally warm climate of the Central Valley has long been something to celebrate and be proud of, that is, until Christmastime rolls around. Santa, his reindeer, and Christmas trees just don’t hold the same allure without fluffy white snow to set the scene. Fear not, as this winter the Dell’Osso family is transforming their pumpkin-throwing, fall-festival, maze-finding farm into a winter wonderland.   For the first time ever, Dell’Osso Family Farm will host a three-event winter spectacular, beginning November 21 with Snow on the Farm, then adding Lights on the Farm a week later, and then opening Santa’s Village for an entire month leading up to Christmas.   At Snow on the Farm, we will finally see snow in the 209, when visitors will be able to tube down Snow Mountain, make a snowman, or take the Dell’Osso Express Train for a ride—and don’t worry about bringing your own tube, they will be available for $15 for 90 minutes.   Lights on the Farm will be the largest light show in Northern California, made up of over 230 different lighted displays and a 200 foot-long light tunnel that can be viewed from your car or Dell’Osso’s own hayride. If that isn’t enough holiday cheer, you’re always welcome to visit Old St. Nick in Santa’s Village, or pick up your tree, some hot apple cider, and maybe a Christmas present or two in the General Store. —Jeremy Fletcher

Each season, the Sandhill cranes make their way to the wetlands and marshes of Northern California to feed and nest. Following close behind them are the many San Joaquin bird and nature enthusiasts who come to celebrate the migration as part of Lodi’s Sandhill Crane Festival.   The festival, taking place this year November 6-8, is more than just bird watching and wetland tours (although there are an abundance of these each day)—nature workshops, presentations, art shows, and makeyour-own crafts are all part of the draw of this annual festival. Free to the public, most events are located at or meet at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi. Tours, information, and complete schedules are available online at www.cranefestival.com. —J.F.

Back in the saddle. Dr. Lynette Hart. Horse lover, radiation oncologist, cancer survivor. As a St. Joseph’s radiation oncologist, Dr. Lynette Hart was no stranger to cancer. So when she noticed a lump on her own breast, she immediately scheduled an exam. A biopsy revealed a malignant tumor. After years of caring for cancer patients, Dr. Hart was now a patient herself, facing the same fears, questions and uncertainties her patients had. Choosing to get care at St. Joseph’s was an easy decision. Dr. Hart knew that St. Joseph’s Cancer Center’s technology and staff were second to none. Her colleagues removed the tumor and put her on the path to recovery. Today, Dr. Hart looks at life and St. Joseph’s cancer care with a whole new perspective, happy to be on the receiving end of a miracle.

GIVE OF YOURSELF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

compiLeD bY JEREMY FLETCHER

‘Tis the season to give of yourself, and there has never been more a time of need than right now. Fortunately, Central Valley residents are known for giving back, and here are a few of our favorite ways to give to a local charity or organization this holiday season. Whether it’s your loose change, your slightly worn jeans, or even your blood, there’s bound to be someone out there less fortunate than yourself. Here’s how to help.

1.

DELTA BLOOD BANK

2.

EMERGENCY FOOD BANK

3.

ANIMAL SHELTER

65 n. commerce st., stockton (209) 943-3830 www. deltabloodbank.org

7 W. scotts ave., stockton (209) 464-7369 www. stocktonfoodbank.org

7475 Murray Dr., stockton (209) 956-3647 www. stocktonpets.org

When you hear, “give of yourself,” it’s usually a metaphor, but this time we mean it literally. Giving blood requires only that you be older than 17 and at least 110 pounds—and with only 5 percent of the population donating blood, every visit counts. According to the Delta Blood Bank in Stockton, if you donate four times a year you could save up to 12 lives. That’s a good enough reason for us.

A necessity for life, the food bank is a busy place these days, and especially in the dreary days of winter. The Emergency Food Bank of Stockton/ San Joaquin serves hundreds of families, children, and seniors on a daily basis, with all different levels of food aid needed. Food donations, volunteers to work at the main pantry, and monetary donations are all gladly accepted, as every little bit helps.

Giving back to an animal shelter requires you to give absolutely nothing at all, but rather to take home a lonely kitten or puppy and provide a happy home. Numerous pets are abandoned yearround and they can be found at shelters like the Adopt-A-Pet Center in Stockton, just waiting to become a possible Christmas present for your own little one.

4.

GENERAL DONATION

Goodwill, salvation army, various locations in san joaquin www.goodwill. org, www. salvationarmyusa. org

A gently used coat, a TV, or even a car you’re no longer using could bring a smile to someone’s face this holiday season. With numerous locations throughout the 209, the Goodwill and Salvation Army have made it their mission to help those in need. Helping out someone in need with what you don’t need is a great way to get into the holiday spirit.

5.

ADOPT-AYOUTH

Family and Youth services of san joaquin county, 729 n. california st., stockton (209) 929-6700 www.cppainc.org

Warm fireplaces and family dinners come to mind as soon as the holiday season comes around, but quite a few children in San Joaquin have no home or family. Family and youth Services sets these kids up with gifts, and also sponsors an annual holiday celebration with presents, Santa, and favorite holiday dishes. Contribute a monetary donation, or pick up a shopping list and take your family to pick out gifts for your ‘adopted’ youth all on your own.

HOW I STAY FIT

NAME: RICHARD W. JOHNSON HOMETOWN: STOCKTON

november/December 2009

brenDa HarTSHorn

WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I WAS SHORT AND STOUT. I really didn’t start growing until the end of high school, and then I didn’t want to work out or do anything athletic because I wasn’t comfortable with how I looked. About 35 years ago, I started hiking in the high country of Yosemite National Park and fell in love with it. I just wanted to enjoy the beauty of the mountains, the fresh air, and all the trees and nature. That’s what got me interested in getting healthier and staying fit, a desire to enjoy this part of life. I stopped smoking, which I had done for many years, and I gradually went from being a couch potato to being an active guy. I joined In-Shape and puttered around in the club for a while without knowing what I was doing. I eventually took a circuit training class that introduced me to all the machines and moves I could be doing, and that’s what gave me the confidence to go to the club on my own and start working out regularly. I was diagnosed with lung disease about fifteen years ago as a result of my years of smoking. Staying healthy and active took on a whole new meaning, so I sought out a personal trainer for guidance. I now train with Jesse at In-Shape Sport: West Lane at least two to three times a week, and he makes such a huge difference for me. The weight lifting we do helps improve my posture and core strength, which helps with my breathing. I also do yoga, tai chi, the treadmill, and the elliptical machine whenever I can, all to strengthen the muscles I use to breathe and to keep me in good overall health. People ask why I haven’t retired yet. I tell them this is my life and I’m proud to be able to still work. I know that my fitness routine is a big reason why I still feel good enough to work and go to Yosemite and do the things I do. I don’t take any medication other than what I take for my lungs— my blood pressure is fine, my cholesterol is fine, and so is everything else. I watch what I eat but don’t diet too much. I just went to Germany and drank my share of beer. You have to enjoy life, you know? With winter and the holidays coming up, I would tell people that no matter what’s going on in their lives, they should get to the gym. When you start working out and those endorphins start firing in your brain, you just feel better, even if you’re stressed and pressed for time otherwise. When it’s foggy outside, or cold, or you just don’t feel like it, you should still go. I know I do, and I always benefit.

Nevada City A “Striking Gold” Getaway, Especially During the Holidays By Don and Ann Jackson | photos Dave Carter

When hearing we’re traveling to Nevada City, a few folks have asked us if it’s near Vegas or Reno. Not a chance. This charming Sierra foothills gold rush town is Californian through and through. Needless to say, the state of Nevada was not too popular with the original townsfolk. On our visit, a local was quick to point out: “Our original name was Nevada, but when statehood was granted just to the east, they stole the name Nevada and we had to add ‘city’ to our moniker. But we got even—when county lines were drawn up, it’s reported someone made sure our county boundaries looked like a derringer pistol aimed directly at Nevada.” Take one look at the map, and you will see just this—ah, sweet revenge.   When to go: A brief day trip or overnight visit to this historic gold rush town is always a glimpse into yesteryear and a good idea during any season, but consider heading to this small town for one of their annual events. Each December, Nevada City stages their famous Victorian Christmas celebration on three Wednesday evenings (December 2, 9, and 16 this year) and two Sunday afternoons (December 13 and 20). It’s a holiday event not to be missed. Classic costumes, old-fashioned carolers, culinary treats, and impressive holiday decorations have made this celebration one of the most well-loved holiday revelries in the state. Another fun-filled event to consider is the annual Nevada City Bicycle Classic, usually held on Father’s Day and won last year by Lance Armstrong. It’s rumored that the world-class Amgen Bike Tour of California may start the 2010 tour in this bicycler’s haven as well.    What to do and see: When visiting Nevada City for the first time, be sure to drop by the Chamber of Commerce and pick up their walking tour map. The Historic Preservation District, one of the best conserved gold rush settlements in the west, includes numerous structures from the mid-1850s that are a joy to behold. Victorian homes, funky firehouses, classic churches, the historyfilled Miners Foundry, and the Nevada Theatre, the oldest theater www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

building in California, are highlights. Nevada City Winery, the premier winery in Nevada County, is uniquely located in the heart of town and offers free tastings of numerous award-winning wines like Syrahs and Cabernet Francs. During harvest season (August-october), you can actually watch the grape crushings in their downtown parking lot (you heard us right, downtown). Bicycling and hiking in town or in the nearby foothills are popular activities. Venturing into one of the local hangouts like the National Hotel Saloon, Chief Crazy Horse Inn, or the mine Shaft also make for fun diversions. Where to stay: During our most recent stay we checked into the Deer Creek Inn, a historic 1860s Queen Anne beautifully restored as a quaint B&B, within a block of downtown. Gourmet breakfasts and a full wine tasting with hors d’oeuvres in the evening are complimentary. For a relaxing afternoon, take the time to lounge by the tranquil Deer Creek. other lodging possibilities include The National Hotel (the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the mississippi), the Northern Queen Inn—both are within walking distance of downtown—and numerous other options that should meet most budget requirements. Where to dine: Probably the area’s most written about restaurant is Friar Tuck’s and deservedly so. With their inviting booths and aptly named ‘Sherwood Forest room’, complemented by a menu of comfort food and fondue, we’ve always had a very satisfying experience at Tuck’s. other recommendations include Posh Nosh for gourmet casual; Cirino’s for award-winning Italian; California organics for vegetarian fare; and Las Katarinas for authentic mexican. Where to shop: Although much of the shopping here is limited to quirky crafts, fine art, and antiques, we love Shaw’s Antiques; J.J. Jacksons, filled with home décor, cards, books, and fun finds from around the world; and Fur Traders, with a full range of sheepskin, leather, and fur items. For complete information about all events, lodging, dining, shopping, and all things Nevada City, visit www.nevadacitychamber.com.

TAX AND AUDIT REPRESENTATION

RECYCLING

Q: What do you need to do to prepare for filing your 2009 tax returns?

How can I start a recycling program at my school or business?

A: January will begin the task of preparing our 2009 tax returns. Tax planning is the first step to preparing an accurate tax return. The more organized you are, the more likely it is that you will be in a position to take advantage of every legally allowed deduction. Take the necessary steps to document your tax deductable activities for 2009. Deductions taken without proper substantiation are not allowed. Receipts for meals must have the parties involved and the purpose documented. Mileage logs are required for deducting business-related travel. I am available if you need assistance.

1) Design a plan, present it to administration and get permission to proceed. 2) Build a team so you have help. Make it fun. 3) Find out what your waste hauler will recycle. View their website for a list of acceptable materials. Once approved, the person responsible for the contract can have them change your service. 4) Set up collection centers. Determine how and where to collect. Keep it easy. Bring bottles and cans (CRV) to a buy-back center to earn extra funds. 5) Educate. Use emails, posters, meetings, assemblies, newsletters. 6) Monitor and adjust. 7) Promote and recognize success. Share tips and innovative ideas, and offer rewards for participation.

HEALTH Q: What’s the best sports bra for a woman? A: Did you know that 80 percent of women working out today are in an improperly fit sports bra? The 2 most common types of sports bras are compression and encapsulation. The higher the impact of your activity, the more support you need. Sports bras come in all different shapes and sizes. Good sports bras will have minimal lycra / spandex. A cheap sports bra may seem like a value, but with usage and washing, the life cycle is usually 1-2 months. You should also be rotating between 3 or more bras and replacing every 4 to 6 months. Every female staff member at Fleet Feet Stockton is thoroughly trained in our Bra FIT Process and can answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding fit and function. HEALTH CARE Q: What’s changed in NURSING HOMES? A: What was once known before as “Convalescent Hospital,” “Nursing Home,” or yes, even “Old Folks Home” has changed over the years. There are now a number of choices available for the active senior. Golden LivingCenter is one company making changes to accommodate those needs. Offering as the name suggests - LIVINGCENTERS, with full-service meals, activities throughout the day, and most with state-of-the-art therapy programs, with the latest in rehabilitation equipment. Patients are now able to rehab in one of the living centers and receive one-on-one therapy that helps build for stronger, faster, and longer lasting outcomes following surgery or accidents. When Stockton’s Crystal Mayer married her personal trainer husband, she found herself spending quite a bit of time in the kitchen to satisfy his appetite, but on her search for flirty aprons, she found nothing that satisfied her own appetite. Today, Mayer’s pin-up-style aprons are available in three different styles and a host of unique, retro prints. The kicker? Mayer’s husband came up with the company name, housewife in heels, because 5’4’’ Mayer wears only tall shoes, even in the kitchen. $48, ocean Avenue Bed and Bath, lincoln Center, Stockton, www. lincolncentershops.com or www.housewifeinheels.com

NEED A PLACE TO BRING THE FAMILY and friends this holiday season when all the formalities have come and gone? Try one of our favorite pizza stops. Pizza has long been the go-to cuisine for those in need of a meal to satisfy any palate (hey, the kids are hardest to please), but the limitations on pizza pie defined by traditional red sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni have been lifted. November/December 2009

Today, no matter which way you slice it (pun intended), pizza has the unique ability to be what you make it. How about garlic sauce? Asparagus and pineapple as toppings? We’ve transitioned into full meals, knife-and-fork pizzas that will satisfy the food pyramid in every cut. While San Joaquin doesn’t lend itself to a signature cuisine such as New England’s clam chowder or Southern barbecue, this freedom has opened the door to take a good amount of artistic expression with our pizzas. We went looking for the best pizza places in the 209, and we found just that— who tosses it, tops it, and takes their pies to the next level.

Michael’s Pizza The Pie: New York-style Location: 2300 W. Alpine Ave., Stockton Contact: (209) 462-6668, www.michaelspizzacafe.com Delivery: Yes

If you leave Michael’s hungry, something went wrong, because there’s more than enough great pizza to go around here. In Stockton for thirty years, Michael’s Pizza is as much a staple of Stockton pizzerias as nearby University of the Pacific is for higher education. While Pacific students located only four blocks away account for much of this place’s business, it’s Michael’s gigantic pizzas that have driven the pizzeria for three decades.   Upon recommendation from owner Gina Calder, we gave the Michael’s Special a try—in essence the fixings of an Italian butcher shop, piled high atop a pizza crust. Pepperoni, sausage, salami, ham, mushrooms, linguisa, bell pepper, cheese, and onions are all included to make one of the boldest pizzas we’ve ever seen. You don’t just pick up a slice of the Michael’s Special; you need at least a fork, maybe even a knife, www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

and determination that you can finish it. Two slices of this and you’ll be begging for a salad to balance it all out. Don’t worry, you’re in luck—those are great here as well.   Michael’s is a notable pizza joint for all the reasons up to and including their pizza. Customers wanted a healthier pizza, so Calder introduced wheat crusts. Customers wanted more options, so she created coffee, bakery, and deli elements to accompany the pizzeria. San Joaquin wanted pizza delivery—you got it. Next thing you know, we’ll want our pizza delivered to our tables earlier because of football season. We’re sure it’s in the works.

Dante’s Pizza The Pie: California-style Location: 9305 Thornton Rd., Stockton Contact: (209) 474-0221 Delivery: Yes

If you happen to be taken on a first date at Dante’s, your initial thought may be that your romantic outlook isn’t too good, because pizza joint doesn’t really say, “I’m into you.” That is, in fact, until you step into this Northern Stockton location and realize that maybe you’ve made the cut, because this pizza place sure does (and yes, this is an actual first date account from one of san joaquin magazine

our editors). By referring to Dante’s as a ‘pizza place’, we’re stretching the limitations of the term because this eatery is much more. Their deep-dish pizzas are far, far more than a thin slice of pepperoni, and their tastefully decorated restaurant is far from your typical pizza joint.   On our visit, we tried the Big Sur, a combination of mozzarella, feta, provolone, tomatoes, and basil that proved to be a shining example of how far we’ve come from the days of cheese pizza. Another menu selection that satisfied is the Valley Special, a vegetarian pizza with a host of veggies ranging from fresh, crisp tomatoes added after the pizza cooks, to warm artichoke hearts and mushrooms. We had a hard time not gobbling our pizza down on-the-spot and powered through two pieces without even pausing, until we finally slowed down to happily enjoy the next two.   Dante’s does everything a little bit bigger and a little bit more elaborate than any other pizzeria. The décor here is framed portraits of jazz musicians in place of the usual team pennants, and Dante’s pizza toppings aren’t just garnish—they define the pizza. Disclaimer: Dante’s large pizza doesn’t just mean big, it means you need two hands to hold the box.

pie and to cheer on a great game. A community favorite since 1980, Eric’s does ‘pizza joint’ like you see in the movies. There’s nothing overly fancy about the place, and you get the feeling that’s just what the customers want. After all, it’s all about stopping in and getting a good slice. On a recent visit, we opted for the $23.75 Family Special—a large two-topping pizza, soda, and salad. There were only two of us dining that evening, but this could have fed four easily. The People’s Choice pizza gets the most love here, as well it should. Pepperoni, ham, sausage, and olives make for one perfect pizza.

Eric’s Pizza The Pie: New York-style Location: 4118 N. El Dorado St., Stockton Contact: (209) 463-6339, www.ericspizza.com Delivery: Yes

To clarify for those not in the know, New Yorkstyle pizza is defined by the way the crust is made. Typically rolled and kneaded by hand and then tossed in the air for the perfect circleshaped crust, no one embraces this tradition quite like Eric’s. The shop is a pizza joint in the most traditional sense, where you can see the pizza chefs preparing mounds of dough and storing them in heated wooden drawers next to the oven. Once properly risen, the chefs begin the transformation to delicious hand-tossed pies.   From the 49ers/Raiders pennants on the walls to the big screen TV in the corner, this central Stockton location is the place for a great www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

David’s Pizza The Pie: New York-style Locations: 900 W. Benjamin Holt Dr. (Lincoln Center), Stockton 1744 W. Hammer Lane, Stockton Contact: (209) 957-2850 Delivery: No

The only of Stockton’s non-chain pizzerias with double-duty locations, David’s Pizza opened in 1993 off Hammer Lane, and owner David Calder jumped at the chance to expand to an additional Lincoln Center location this past year. With great pizza, a Lincoln Center address, a sports-themed interior, and a flat san joaquin magazine

85

screen TV outside on a great patio setup, it’s no wonder that David’s has become a Stockton hotspot.   A first-timer at David’s, we took note of their pizza-by-the-slice special until 5 p.m., and decided to go traditional and order a slice of pepperoni. Just looking at the freshly-cut pie spinning on the counter, it’s as if they made the pizza with San Joaquin magazine’s photo shoot in mind—the pie looks perfect, right down to the thick crust and just the right amount of cheese and pepperoni. What about the sauce? Here, there are five sauces to choose from, but the traditional red sauce is just the right blend of salty and a welcome hint of sweet that we didn’t expect.

Rick’s Pizza The Pie: New York-style Location: 1320 Lakewood Mall, Lodi Contact: (209) 339-9411 Delivery: Yes, starting after 4 p.m.

Make a list of the things you want in a pizza place—central location, good crowd, hard workers, and friendly servers—Rick’s in Lodi has them all. Now, the most important part, the things you want your pizza to have—a thin buttery crust is where it’s at, because pizza’s all about the sauce, cheese, and toppings, right? Add in a pizzeria owner with a knack for which combinations taste good and what the people like, and you’ve got a winner.   Within shouting distance of Lodi High off of Ham Avenue, Rick’s is always bustling. In the short fifteen minutes we waited for our pie, we witnessed at least a dozen people stopping by for pick-up orders. Combine this with a half-dozen guys churning out pizzas, not to mention the owner up to his elbows in flour himself, and you know Rick’s will be a quality pizza far before you even get served.   The man himself recommended the Rick’s Deluxe Combo, topped with pepperoni, linguisa, salami, ham, sausage, bell peppers, and onions, as well as one of the most popular pizzas, the Garlic Pesto Chicken Combo. We were sold. A cream garlic sauce, pesto, sundried tomatoes, chicken, mushrooms, and tiny onions make for one fantastic pizza. We may never go back to traditional pepperoni and red sauce after this, and judging by the way the word-on-the-streets gets around, we’re not the only ones. SJM

A HOME OF THEIR OWN A Stockton couple re-evaluates their living space when their sons leave the nest

by jaMiE MEnakER | PHoToS BREnDa HaRTsHoRn

HOME TO THREE SONS AND VARIOUS PETS, Kevin and Kelli Carter have had a full house for as long as they can remember. With the boys now grown and gone, the couple has finally taken full advantage of the empty space in their ‘empty nest’, updating and redecorating room by room to turn their Brookside home in Stockton into the ideal retreat for friends and visitors. »

www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

san joaquin magazine

91

It all started with an upcoming visit from the couple’s niece. Kelli wanted to create a space where her niece could relax and feel at home, and a guest room where visitors would feel as if they are sleeping in luxury. With the help of Kelli’s good friend and interior designer Sandy Smith, as well as Chris and Tammy Kelley from Stockton’s CR Porter Home Décor, the end result is a bed draped in plush chocolate-colored bedding with gold detailing, and a romantic hanging light fixture by Charles Marder, a creation of silk, beading, and fringe reminiscent of a Spanish boudoir.

92

san joaquin magazine

The biggest change in the Carters’ home has been the entry room. Originally a formal living room that not even the family felt comfortable entering, with a small dining room to the side, the interior design team re-envisioned the space into something simply meant for entertaining. First, the dining area was relocated to the front of the space, filling it with an eightperson, solid dark wood dining table. This left the space remaining between the dining area and the kitchen to become a place to actually sit and relax. Tammy and Chris had a window seat constructed to fit into the already existing bay window, meant to create a library feel (now Kelli’s favorite place to sit), and placed overstuffed armchairs around a leather ottoman to serve double duty as both a coffee table and extra seating.   “We moved away from the formal to more casual,” agree both interior designer Tammy and homeowner Kelli, “but more pleasing to the eye. It’s a casual elegance, a home that embraces you and makes you feel cozy, like you want to sit and have a cup of coffee. The whole house is livable even though it’s beautiful.”   This new entryway “great room” also set the scene for the entire home’s gradual update. The front door of the house was replaced by a knotty alder wood door, almost floor to ceiling, followed by the interior doors for all rooms being changed over to this same wood. Simple, white walls in the great room were retextured to a warm, golden-hued ‘imperfect smooth finish’, which also now carries through the rest of the home.   “The home is about texture,” says Tammy Kelley of CR Porter. “People think that the walls are not a tangible thing to work on. But it really makes such a big difference in a room.”   Another important feature added to the home is the knotty wood beams that Chris hand-distressed, which now run the length of the downstairs area’s ceiling. The comfort of the great room continues on with an open layout into the kitchen and family room. Guests can be in any of the three rooms and still participate in conversation.   “The house is little,” says Kelli, “but big in style.” She’s the creative eye behind a great deal of the home’s art pieces. “The artwork in this house is picked quite simply by what Kelli loves,” says Tammy. A Rose of a Restaurant Lodi’s Rosewood Bar and Grill by Jamie Menaker

courtesy rosewood

Located almost smack-dab in the middle of Lodi’s downtown drag, what once was small-town, around-the-corner restaurant Hazel’s has been reincarnated in recent years to busy and bustling status as Rosewood Bar and Grill. With its twinkle lights and lavish awnings beckoning guests from the street (as if the prime location wasn’t enough), the eatery has been on the up and up since 2003, when Wine and Roses officially took over ownership and dubbed their sister restaurant with its rose-appropriate name. Today, the eatery has an updated look, a seasonal menu with local, organic produce from around the region, and ‘bar chefs’ behind the cherrywood bar, creating cocktails from freshly-squeezed juices and homemade simple syrup. »

On a recent night at the restaurant, general manager Scott McLeod and restaurant chef Iradh Herrera crowd around a corner of the bar tasting possible menu selections for the next season’s offerings; the menu changes twice a year for the winter and summer. At this eatery with five different sections on the menu—appetizers, soups and salads, entrees, pizza, and steaks—there’s a quite a bit to be tasted.   Originally conceptualized by Wine and Roses Hotel and Spa as the more casual counterpart to its on-site restaurant, Rosewood spans both ends of the attire spectrum. During the summer on Farmers Market evenings, the restaurant’s bar area has been known to drawn in patrons dressed down as far as shorts and flip flops, while general manager McLeod has also seen the restaurant become one of San Joaquin’s favorite hot-spots for special occasions, with diners dressed to the nines.   The menu is also reflective of this balance of casual and elegant, with pork tenderloin accompanied by vegetable couscous and a peach reduction listed right alongside Rosewood pizza, with mushrooms, pepperoni, and Italian sausage. The dishes that truly shine here are seasonal additions like the summertime mango, avocado, and shrimp dinner-sized salad, and winter’s pork osso buco with cinnamon couscous and sautéed spinach. Other standout entrées include macadamia nut-encrusted halibut, four different cuts of steak, and duck with an orange reduction.   Don’t settle in for a four course meal just yet, however. With the restaurant’s large interior space split almost down the middle between the formal dining room and the dressed-down bar area, cocktails accompanied by appetizers or salads are also a draw here for the more casual diner. The Fuji apple salad with candied pecans and blue cheese is a hands-down favorite, while the beet salad with endive, goat cheese, and the same candied pecans isn’t too far behind. On the appetizer list, house-made coconut prawns with a Thai chili dipping sauce are the winner.   With a general manager twenty-five years strong in the restaurant business, a chef who enjoys concocting new menu selections on a regular basis from fresh, local produce, ‘bar chefs’ who pour over ten specialty cocktails, and all desserts on the menu made from scratch, we can see why Rosewood’s presence is constantly felt in Lodi—and don’t expect the restaurant to be going anywhere anytime soon.

First impressions can be deceiving, as is the case with Strings Café. The modest location (nestled in the WalMart shopping center) doesn’t do its flawless reputation justice. You have to stop in, if only to taste the soft Parmesan bread and the salad, which is really quite memorable— crisp lettuce sprinkled with savory croutons, sunflower seeds, raisins, and a dressing that pulls the whole dish together. Thinking about stopping after the salad? Not a chance. Try the lasagna, which is superb, or any of the seafood dishes, all of which are surprisingly fresh and flavorful. Wine and Roses

CANDY APPLES

5 large Granny Smith apples wooden craft sticks 1 package (14 oz.) individually-wrapped caramels, unwrapped 2 Tbsp. water 7 oz. chocolate candy bar, broken into pieces 2 Tbsp. shortening, divided 1 cup colored candy coating melts

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Dip apples into boiling water briefly, using a slotted spoon, to remove any wax that may be present. Wipe dry, and set aside to cool. Insert sticks into the apples through the cores. Line a baking sheet with waxed paper and coat with cooking spray. Place the unwrapped caramels into a microwave-safe medium bowl along with 2 tablespoons of water. Cook on high for 2 minutes, then stir and continue cooking and stirring at 1 minute intervals until caramel is melted and smooth. Hold apples by the stick, and dip into the caramel to coat. Set on waxed paper; refrigerate for about 15 minutes to set.

TASTE OF THE SEASON Apples

by jeremy fletcher

As fruits and vegetables go, there can hardly be a more perfect item than the apple. Good for buttering up your teacher in grade school and keeping the doctor away as you reach adulthood, it revolutionized gravity for Newton, helped create a folk hero in Johnny Appleseed, and we haven’t even begun talking about how delicious apples are—just ask Adam (of Adam and Eve fame).   Despite a six-month growing season and multiple varieties that can be grown in the Central Valley, the apple has long been overshadowed in the 209’s agriculturally-diverse climate. The apple is holding its own in the Golden State, however, producing more than 10 million bushels a year, and ranking California as the fourth leading apple producer in the United States. Residents of San Joaquin can choose from more than a dozen orchards in the county alone.   While apples are typically harvested in the fall, the fruit is enjoyed most throughout the holiday season. Apple cider, apple pie, apple sauce, and a plethora of holiday pastries wouldn’t hold the same appeal without this most perfect fruit.

Heat the chocolate with 1 tablespoon of shortening in a microwave-safe bowl until melted and smooth. Dip apples into the chocolate to cover the layer of caramel. Return to the waxed paper to set. Melt the candy melts in the microwave with the remaining shortening, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Use a fork or wooden stick to flick colored designs onto your apples for a finishing touch. Refrigerate until set, overnight is even better.

APPLE STRUDEL

1 lb. sweet apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced 1/4 cup golden raisins 1/4 cup dried currants 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 2 Tbsp. white sugar 2 slices brown bread, crumbled 1/2 package (16 oz.) phyllo dough 1/4 cup butter, melted Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a bowl, combine apples, raisins, currants, cinnamon, sugar, bread crumbs, and stir well. Spread several sheets of pastry generously with melted butter and lay them one atop the other on a baking sheet. Spread the fruit mixture evenly over the top sheet, then roll the sheets up to form a log shape. Brush with melted butter again. Bake in preheated oven 30 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and fruit is tender.

De Vega Brothers has risen from its humble beginnings in a converted A&W stand in Manteca to one of the Valley’s premier Italian restaurants, with expanded locations in both Manteca and Stockton. The Manteca site boasts hand-painted murals of Roman ruins and rustic Italian vistas, while Stockton prides itself on creating an atmosphere of urban elegance with patio dining and live piano music. Both restaurants are known for their generous portions and delicious lamb chops, cioppino, chicken and veal scaloppini, steak, and seafood, as well as their gourmet pastas and sauces. Finley’s is full of pleasant surprises, the first being the truly romantic restaurant that lies within this nondescript building. While soft candlelight flickers at the center of your elegantly set table, you can relax and share a bottle of locally-made wine and, if you’re brave enough, kick off your dinner by sharing an appetizer of sautéed or deep-fried frog legs. This succulent dish is sweeter tasting than chicken, and quite appetizing. After indulging your adventurous side, spring into dinner with the savory house specialty, smoked prime rib. Feeling romantic enough to propose? Finley’s also caters small, intimate weddings in their spacious garden. Isadore’s Restaurant 680 N. Main St., (209) 825-4300, www.isadores.com. Full bar. Isadore’s is anything but humble: the kitchen is out-of-this-world, and they know it. In fact, if you happen to inquire, they’ll gladly tell you which items on the menu you’re sure to fall in love with. Locals swear by the quality of the seafood and made-to-order pasta selections. Though there’s no official children’s menu, the kitchen will gladly whip up a pint-sized meal for your munchkins, as well as accommodate any other special requests. Finally, don’t be shy—order the Sex in a Pan for dessert. Sweet, ripe banana slices and rich chocolate pudding on a crumbly cookie crust topped with real whipped cream and chocolate sauce make for a climactic end to any meal. RESTAURANT GUIDE

Central Perk New café serves up live music and a reinvigorated spirit to downtown Tracy A hint of caffeine, a bit of live music, and plenty of downtown-meetshometown charm. Infusing new life into downtown Tracy is the Main Street Jazz Café, anchored by father-and-son team Ken and Joe Cefalo, respectively.   Sidewalk seating, a cozy back room, and an upstairs loft for performing musicians all lend an air of urban sophistication to this small town spot, and with its prime downtown location, the café has something to offer to everyone, from study spot to date night stop.   “We wanted to make it a place where all ages could come at anytime,” Joe says.    In addition to coffeehouse staples, the café offers a selection of local wines and microbrews, as well as a menu of grilled paninis, fresh salads, and vegetarian-friendly soups.   Also on the menu: Live jazz music each Friday and Saturday.   “I always wanted a jazz venue in Tracy,” says Ken, who also owns around-the-corner music store Main Street Music. “The jazz scene here is bigger than most people think. When I moved to Tracy in 1981, it seemed like there wasn’t any at all, but it’s really growing.” —Rachel Filipinas If you go: Main Street Jazz Café, 809 Central Ave., Tracy, (209) 830-0300, www.mainstreetjazzcafe.com

In the mood for something different? Relax on the Delta and enjoy the flavors and rhythms of the Caribbean Islands at the Breadfruit Tree. The restaurant serves food from many of the tropical islands, and prides itself on its Peleau—a rice stir-fry with fresh veggies and seafood, seasoned with a myriad of delightful spices. Complete your meal with a Jamaican beer or house-made, Caribbean-style drink. While eating, admire the hand-painted murals depicting waterfalls and island life. The owners proudly claim, “As they say in the Caribbean, ‘we cook food with love.’” The Breadfruit Tree is open for catering year-round and restaurant dining from February to November.

Cocoro Japanese Bistro

Cocoro is the “it” place to go for sushi in Stockton. Its streamlined, contemporary Japanese décor and intimate seating arrangements give it a sophisticated atmosphere, and its artful sushi creations made with fish delivered fresh daily from the Bay Area keep patrons coming back for more. At the sushi counter, you can watch talented chefs roll and wrap beautiful bites right before your eyes. The restaurant’s signature sushi—the Coco Roll— consists of a tempura prawn wrapped up with avocado and topped with eel, spicy tuna, teriyaki sauce, and special house dressing, all garnished with a walnut. For the less adventurous eater, Cocoro offers the traditional range of tempura, teriyaki, and noodle dishes. The Creamery 5756 Pacific Ave., Robinhood Plaza (209) 925-1111. No alcohol served. Chitiva’s Salsa and Sports Bar and Grill

Chitiva’s serves up authentic Mexican food, tasty tropical drinks, and a giant side of fun six nights a week. Saturday nights after 9 p.m., the fajitas and enchiladas play second fiddle to the DJs and live bands on center stage—the Salsa is still hot, but now it’s a dance, not a culinary dip. If all this has you craving a cool Delta breeze, look no further than the restaurant’s outdoor dining overlooking the water or one of their popular Salsa cruises (summer months through October). Nestled in the Thornton Plaza shopping center, Dante’s puts a sunny California spin on the standard pepperoni and cheese creation. In fact, most of their pizzas don’t even come with pepperoni or mozzarella. The name of the restaurant says it all— this is not your authentic Italian pizzeria, so be prepared for specialty pizzas with experimental combinations of unique and exotic toppings. Dante’s offers fourteen different pizzas made with fresh meats and produce, gourmet cheeses, and colorful sauces (the pesto is fantastic). You may already have a favorite Chinese restaurant—everybody does—but if you are in the mood to venture away from habit, hit Dave Wong’s. This longtime Stockton favorite serves up a pleasant combination of Chinese, Cantonese, and Szechwan eats. The broccoli beef, lemon chicken, and fried rice are hands-down favorites. The menu has many traditional dishes, alongside appetizing treats like wok-charred green beans. The muted walls and intimate (yet expandable) quiet candlelit dining chambers reiterate the fact that Dave Wong’s is not your typical Chinese restaurant. David’s New York Style Pizza 1744 W. Toppings, cheese, and dough that’s prepared fresh daily may be three of the reasons this Stockton staple has had such success that they’ve recently opened a second location in Lincoln Center. Or maybe it’s all the choices at David’s New York Style Pizza that make it so popular: Eat in or take out? Hammer Lane or Lincoln Center? Thick, thin, or standard crust? Indoors or out on the patio? One of David’s twelve specialty pizzas or one of your own creations? We know sports-lovers love the pizzeria because it combines some of their favorite things: great pizza, beer, fellow fans, and the big game televised on the many 46-inch flat screen televisions hung in both locations. recipes For liFe Local cookbook aims to make dinner a family affair Stockton natives Rima Barkett and Claudia Pruett are on a mission: Rescue the tradition of quality-time during dinner. With their new cookbook, Cooking Dinner: Simple Italian Family Recipes Everyone Can Make (Mega, 2009), the authors encourage family bonding by bringing children into the kitchen. “The well-being of our kids and the unity of our family is the price we pay,” says Barkett, who grew up in Italy helping her mother in the kitchen. “Eating and making food is a necessity, so it’s teaching them a life skill as well.” The cookbook is filled with easy-to-follow recipes of classic Italian dishes like spaghetti carbonara, risotto milanese, and strawberry tiramisu that were inspired by Barkett and Pruett’s upbringing and culinary backgrounds. “The recipes are tried and true, simple and realistic,” says Barkett, who owned restaurant Café Luna Spaghetteria in Stockton before it closed in 2006. “Anyone can make them.” The book also includes tips about how kids can lend a hand in the kitchen, a list of pantry essentials, and suggestions for weekly menus with accompanying grocery lists. “In Stockton, we have the best produce on earth,” Barkett says. “We really are in the right place to be cooking.” —Rachel Filipinas

At this fun aussie-inspired restaurant, they really know how to mix it up on the barbee. One of their signature dishes is the savory barbecued ribs, served as an appetizer or an entrée. The ribs, which are best paired with Bette’s world-famous pesto, are tender to the point of melting away in your mouth. It is likely visitors will find this restaurant bustling when they visit, so during peak hours, be prepared for a lengthy wait. This downtown restaurant, open since 1975, is a classic eatery where the food is as eclectic as the diners. Mothers with their toddlers settle in next to prominent businessmen in ties for everything from a sturdy American burger to Greek souvlaki. Don’t be intimidated by the Greek side of the menu or the local luminaries— souvlaki is simply the Grecian version of shish kebab, served on pita bread, and at Yasoo Yani, everyone gets the same fine family service. Don’t even get us started on the honey-drenched baklava for dessert.

Anything but bland—that’s Amore’s. The building that houses this eatery is historic and rustic, which, when combined with the fun decorations and local antiques inside, creates a sense of small-town charm echoed by the friendly service and traditional Italian dishes. Magellan’s Restaurant, named after owner and Executive Chef Thomas Magellan, is much like the small, intimate restaurants found in San Francisco. Featuring American Continental cuisine, the menu choices range from duck salad to their salmon burger to the ever popular, delectable filet mignon.
