tears, trends and talk

TIPS AND TRENDS DRESSING DOWN

Because good clean fun is overrated, trash-talking brides are indulging their altar egos at Trash the Dress photo shoots. Rather than wear a wedding gown only one time before packing it away for all eternity, brides are opting to “trash” their designer duds during arty, high-design photo shoots that produce layouts worthy of a spread in a glossy fashion mag. These shoots allow brides to get dirty in mucky backdrops—anywhere from woodsy and/or watery locales to construction sites and vacant industrial buildings. For the pick of the local litter, contact San Joaquin-based Lori Makabe Photography (www.lorimakabe.com) to plan your own Trash the Dress shoot.

ECO-CHIC CELEBRATIONS Charitable weddings are in favor, and there are several ways to celebrate your union graciously and sustainably. Among our favorite ideas is to create a give-back gift registry through the I Do Foundation—a nonprofit organization in partnership with retailers such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Pottery Barn that will donate up to 10 percent of gifts purchased to your favorite charity (www. idofoundation.org). Other ways to host an elegant yet environmentally-friendly wedding is to serve a selection of San Joaquin Countyproduced organic wines (www.lodiwine. com), and to set up at a recycle station at your ceremony or reception venue to collect paper discardables—wedding invites, place cards, save-the-date reminders, and more—for reuse.

Bride-to-Be

book reviews compiled by Jenn Thornton

Book covers courtesy chronicle books

The DIY Wedding: Celebrate Your Day Your Way

by Kelly Bare (Chronicle Books, 2007) This smart, creative compendium of wedding planning tips, advice, and easy-to-accomplish tasks is an informative reinvention of the generic bridal guide. By encouraging brides-to-be to channel their inner wedding consultant in order to create personalized ceremonies and unforgettable moments, this how-to guide supplies everything brides need to know, including information about successful budgeting and project-making. A comprehensive list of resources, understandable cost-comparison sidebars, and inventive ways to involve family and friends are great additions. The result is a pressure-free planner for brides who think outside the box.

Destination Wedding Planner: The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Wedding from Afar

by Alison Hotchkiss (Chronicle Books, 2009) Planning a destination wedding is a dream for many couples, but a nightmare reality for those woefully unprepared for the undertaking. Enter the Destination Wedding Planner—a topto-bottom resource guide for globetrotting couples planning far away nuptials. Among the essential information in this book are tips about how to successfully manage all the details, from choosing a locale and setting a budget to assembling a reasonable guest list and making travel arrangements. Included worksheets, checklists, and documents make planning seem within reach. Penned by a seasoned industry pro, the Destination Wedding Planner is comprehensive and insightful.

Wedding Zen: Calming Wisdom for the Bride

by Susan Elia MacNeal, Illustrations by Rachell Sumpter (Chronicle Books, 2004) For anyone looking to dodge stressed-to-themax moments as a bride-to-be, Wedding Zen is a karmic reminder of how to apply Zen thinking to Big Day traditions such as staying mindful, focusing energy inward, and surrendering the ego to embrace calm. Inspired illustrations complement time-honored philosophy, generating good karma for the Big Day and beyond. A great gift for brides-to-be.

Bride and Groom Family Tree Album

by Kerry Colburn (Chronicle Books, 2009) Aesthetically pleasing and functional, this artfullycrafted keepsake album invites couples to chart their legacy, stories, and family traditions. The book keeps photos and mementos in protective sleeves, and even includes a fold-out family tree. A cross between a high-quality scrapbook and a genealogical archive, this thoughtful gift is the perfect first step toward Happily Ever After.

S

ugary white-sand beaches, reefed swimming holes, azure seas, and the low-key vibe of the West Indies make this cluster of islands a hot-spot destination for couples planning faraway nuptials, and for honeymooners trading one aisle for another isle. To ensure that you’re wedded in the right direction, we picked three Caribbean islands and a trio of hot properties for your wedding and/or honeymoon destination.

TURKS AND CAICOS

Secluded Turks and Caicos is one of the world’s remaining Shangri-Las, the visibility of which, thanks to a steady peppering of elegant resorts, indulgent spas, and highprofile guests (blink and you’ll miss a celebrity), is on the rise. Beautiful beaches, jaw-dropping views, a casual, come-as-youare vibe, savory cuisine, refreshing cocktails, and only one major town—the developing travel gateway of Providenciales—make Turks and Caicos a coveted stopover for the jet set. With luxury resorts offering at-your-every-whim service, Turks and Caicos has long delighted honeymooners eager for getaway romance, so it was only a matter of time before couples planning destination weddings started competing for the affections of the small, uncrowded, culturally diverse island.

Who: Discerning couples with a five-star

sense of style that seek and appreciate the finer things of island life—an unpopulated beach, a refreshing conch salad, luxuriant accommodations, and a sunset cruise with a seasoned sailor—are most at home on Turks and Caicos.

What: Waves don’t crash on Turks and

Caicos, they glide gracefully to the shore, which makes the island exceptional for anything nautical, especially diving and sailing. Those interested in the latter should seek out the services of Captain Tim, a wily, displaced Canadian with movie star looks who three decades ago arrived on Turks and Caicos by accident and never left. Aboard his wine-stocked catamaran, “The Beluga,”

Captain Tim introduces passengers to little-seen Turks and Caicos, all the while regaling them with abridged history lessons about the island, glowworm mating rituals, and the genius of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, which he pipes in from somewhere below deck. As the sun sets, painting the sky with a sherbet palette, Captain Tim slices “The Beluga” through turquoise sea while waves lap gently at its sides, drifting only when it is time to uncork.

Where: Unlike party-focused resorts,

The Regent Palms—an amenity-rich, white-walled property with only 72 luxury suites—offers boutique service, five-star accommodations (suites are expansive, equipped, and well-stocked), immaculate grounds, quiet breezes, a wondrous spa with a menu of progressive, indigenous treatments, and a tranquil backdrop within which to truly lose yourself. Privacy is the priority at The Regent Palms, where hospitality is a well-practiced fine art, and romance trumps all.

Wedding: The Regent Palms is idyllic

for destination weddings. Most couples opt for a beachside ceremony on the immaculate shores of Grace Bay (always a good bet), but the resort’s architectural richness provides equally enchanting “I Do” backdrops, including flower-flanked atriums, serene courtyards, and a reflecting pond at the spa, which when illuminated with lighted candles and floating Caribbean botanicals, resembles a cross between a Roman bath and Moroccan palace. ST. LUCIA

Exquisite St. Lucia, a dreamy portal into paradise, is a hideaway Caribbean island without peer. The Pitons, two iconic volcanic peaks that rise up from the Caribbean to the heavens, lend rainforested St. Lucia its emerald green earthiness, while the pulse of the island comes from West Indian culture, which is simultaneously laidback and lively. Although the secret is out about slow-to-develop St. Lucia, where posh digs are not hard to come by and neither is an expertly mixed, mint-topped mojito, the island looms relatively under the radar. away-from-home on St. Lucia, and love it for its organic beauty, unspoiled nature, pristine beaches, and prism-clear water that supernaturally shifts from deep blue to light green. With trees that whisper and sway, and tropical blooms providing a breathtaking backdrop for all activities and occasions, St. Lucia is for lovers.

What: Hiking and jungle biking

thrill, while botanical gardens, a diverse aquaculture, a drive-in volcano, and sulphur springs inspire. Waveless water, soft-sand beaches, and reefed coves make for excellent water sporting, namely scuba diving, snorkeling, and ocean kayaking. Night sailing and yacht cruising are 34

popular island pastimes, while the sight of a vacant hammock signals a breezy afternoon of leisure.

proximity to the beach are just a few of Jade Mountain’s perks.

Where: Majestic Jade Mountain, a bold

Mountain are elegant beyond imagination. With several nuptial backdrops on the 600acre property, including a meticulously groomed beach and actual treehouse, those who tie the knot at the resort do so in tikitented paradise. Jade Mountain’s wedding coordinator works closely with couples to handle all the arrangements, which can be either elaborate or simple, but always magical. Couples who stay five nights at Jade Mountain from August 1-September 31, 2010 have the option of marrying at the resort for free. For more information, visit www. jademountain.com.

example of how organic architecture can also be wildly luxurious, is a secluded, airy resort located high above its sister property, Anse Chastanet. Guest accommodations— aptly named “sanctuaries”—are expansive, open-air spaces designed to give residents the heavenly sense that they’re floating among the clouds. With no walls to obstruct views of the nearby Pitons, these celestial-inspired sanctuaries make Jade Mountain the star of St. Lucia. “I DO’s”

Who: Laid-back couples

entranced by explosions of color from verdant tropical gardens, paintbrush sunsets, lazy-day sunbathing, powdery sands, sagging hammocks, and no place to go.

Because even Happily Ever After begins with a plan, the following destination wedding tips will put you eight steps closer to the altar.

What: The absence of

Budget realistically: Know exactly what you have to spend, and what your guests can afford. Marrying abroad is not always the least expensive option, so monetary considerations must be a given, after which a nonnegotiable guest list should be compiled.

high-rise hotels makes the Out Islands ideal for hoisting up a sail for all forms of seafaring. Secluded beaches and untouched natural beauty make for picture-postcard beachcombing, while whitepicketed Bahamian towns provide visitors with a sense of authentic West African life.

Consult an expert: Hire a destination wedding planner to help navigate the cultural landscape, translate legalities, and facilitate details.

Where: If pastel-paletted

Don’t procrastinate: A farflung wedding requires time management. Translating and processing required documents takes time in other countries, so don’t wait to get started. Post the details: Design a simple website with wedding details, required paperwork, and links to travel deals for guests. Update documentation: Be aware of a country’s passport laws, and make sure that wedding guests have plenty of time to update their paperwork if necessary. Arrive early: Don’t leave anything to chance, and we’re not talking about jet lag either. Land at your wedding locale at least two days before the wedding to finalize any lingering details. Get a written record: Make sure that you have a written confirmation of all agreements prior to payment.

BAHAMAS

Mesmerizing blue lagoons, promising nightlife, and all-occasion aqua adventures make the Bahamas one of the world’s most desired and visited ports of call. For romance, those who look beyond the reggae street parties, all-inclusive resorts, and sideshow tourism of Nassau will discover the Out Islands, a scattering of slower-paced Bahamian respites that have avoided colossal development and massive crowds, lavishing visitors for less. Thankfully, less is still more. sanjoaquinbride.com

Service and setting figure prominently into ceremonies of all sizes, every detail of which the property’s wedding consultant executes with great care. accommodations, boutique hospitality, unmarred views, and rose-tinted shores are high priorities, look no further than the beachfront Pink Sands Resort on Harbour Island. This quaint colonial outpost amid 20 acres of natural tropic charms, including an actual bird sanctuary, claims three miles of blushing, pink-sand shoreline and offers, among other luxe comforts, shuttered cottages with garden or ocean views, fine dining, and both land and sea excursions.

Consider customs: Not every country recognizes civil ceremonies, for example, and only permits couples to marry on certain days, so do your homework.

Kaizad & Dixie

Cama

May 9, 2009 Wine and Roses, Lodi Looking for an outdoor venue able to accommodate more than 250 guests, Kaizad and Dixie Cama discovered Lodi’s Wine and Roses, which provided the ideal backdrop for their multicultural wedding, complete with a traditional Parsi ceremony.   The ceremonies may have been traditional from the bride and groom’s perspective, but entirely new to their guests, many who traveled from as far as the East Coast, Europe, India, and Africa to attend the wedding. “We were excited to show our guests a style of wedding from a culture that most hadn’t [previously] experienced,” Dixie says.    Kaizad and Dixie kept the “décor simple and the night festive” with the oranges, pinks, and greens of spring, including floral arrangements of orange and pink roses, and from India, custom-made table overlays and Dixie’s wedding sari, with intricate hand-sewn detailing. Western and Indian traditions also intersected festively on the dance floor with musical selections from both cultures.   Dixie’s trip down the aisle was one of the memorable moments, especially for Kaizad. “Dixie surprised me by having our guitarist play an instrumental version of one of our favorite songs,” he recalls. “It caught me off guard, but it fit beautifully with that special moment.” —Jennifer Thornton

Michael & Celeste

Covey

September 19, 2009 Viaggio Winery and Estate, Acampo From a Valentine’s Day proposal to a Tuscan-inspired wedding setting, Michael and Celeste Covey’s wedding came together perfectly—but it didn’t necessarily start out as such.   “We met seven years ago when I was a waitress,” Celeste says. “We didn’t hit it off at first, but I took his number and called him two days later.” Six years later, Michael unexpectedly popped the question.    The task of wedding planning began soon after. Looking for a date close to the couple’s September 17 anniversary, Celeste searched until she finally came across Viaggio Winery. “The first week, I turned into a Bridezilla,” Celeste jokes. “But I had a friend that told me that everything eventually works out if you just relax.” She wisely took the advice: A lastminute cancellation opened up the date for the couple, and Viaggio’s wedding coordinators helped Celeste plan for her big day.    The winery’s vintage Italian charm served as a perfect backdrop for the summer ceremony, daughters Alexis and Mercedes served as flower girls, and a Mariachi band played during cocktail hour.   “The wedding was more than I expected,” Celeste says. “It was more than a fairy tale. There is no word for it.” —Rachel Filipinas

Sean & Erin

Soulsby

May 16, 2009 Oak Farm Vineyards, Lodi Sean and Erin woke up the morning of their wedding well-rested and excited for the day ahead. Up until the big day, Erin thought that she was going to be nervous the day of the wedding, but thanks to good planning and the help of such wonderful family and friends, the morning arrived with no more than a flutter in her stomach.   Once the couple arrived at Oak Farm Vineyards, the day continued flawlessly— other than the 102 degree temperature, the wedding was perfect. The couple was married by a family friend under the towering oak tree that stands at the back of the property, surrounded by everyone they love.   Oak Farm’s rustic white barn was the ultimate backdrop for the celebration that followed the vows.   “Our faces beamed with excitement as we were able to sit back and enjoy the experience for a few moments,” says Erin. “Our delicious dinner was catered by Black Tie Gourmet and our wine choice was a Soulsby family favorite, Sierra Vista Winery. With Marquis Entertainment playing the best tunes, we all ended the night with tired feet after hours of dancing!” —Erin Soulsby

Ruiz

June 21, 2009 The Reserve at Spanos Park, Stockton After meeting through mutual friends four years ago, Ryan and Samantha Ruiz exchanged wedding rings and vows at a 1940s-inspired ceremony at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, where the bride was able to fulfill her dream of having an outdoor wedding.   “From the atmosphere to the centerpieces, I wanted a relaxed wedding with a fun vibe,” says Samantha, who together with the venue’s wedding coordinator, Jackie Huertas, created exactly that. A vibrant color palette of magenta and orange enhanced antique roses and carnation floral arrangements, complemented by a running theme of butterflies, including two dozen that were released when the couple was formally announced as husband and wife. Also fun were boxed favors of Jelly Bellys for guests, and a headpiece featuring a keepsake broach that Samantha wore to the reception in honor of the heirloom’s original owner, her grandmother, with whom she shared a close relationship before she passed away.   Although it was important their big day be perfect, Ryan and Samantha say that staying true to themselves and their vision was equally significant. “Our wedding allowed us to show others who we are as a couple and as individuals.” —Jennifer Thornton 48

May 2, 2009 Grand Island Mansion, Walnut Grove For a traditional wedding with elegance and romance, Keith and Christian Mallonee chose Grand Island Mansion in Walnut Grove as the site of their formal nuptials.   “Because I was 19 and Keith was 20 when we got married, we wanted a wedding that people took seriously, so it was as traditional as possible,” Christian says. “Keith is also a U.S. Marine, and because the Marine Corps prides itself on tradition, we did too.”   The venue, Keith’s Dress Blues military attire, and Christian’s beaded wedding gown were complemented by a rich color scheme of red and gold, mirroring the colors of Keith’s uniform. These shades reappeared in the form of personalized M&M’s, blooming roses, and custommade cake toppers of a Marine and his bride. Although the wedding was formal, it also showcased the personality of Keith and Christian as a couple—outgoing and fun-loving.   Keith and Christian are quick to credit XSight Photography for perfectly capturing the convergence of all the different ceremonial elements and what they wanted to convey. “The photographer honored Keith’s service, expressed our youth, and portrayed our joy and love for each other,” Christian says. —Jennifer Thornton

Trevor & Courtney

H ogan

August 8, 2009 Venn Farms, Modesto The wedding of Trevor and Courtney Hogan was in every way a family affair. The elegantly rustic, family-owned property provided a picturesque backdrop befitting a fairytale occasion.   Intricate details made the Hogans’ wedding memorable. Among them was a grape archway leading to a well-tended, aromatic garden of fresh strawberries, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkins; a 1959 Lincoln Continental to store wedding gifts; and handcrafted place cards with guestsigned pictures. A restored windmill, old plows, wheelbarrows, and milk bottle tabletoppers from the mother-of-the-bride’s private collection further personalized the ceremony, which was officiated by Courtney’s uncle, John Tetz. Bar linens were made by the mother of the groom.    Cheery sunflowers and tables full of yellow botanicals with a hint of green stood out against a red barn that doubled as a dance floor and bar, while four different types of fruit-filled pies and a three-tiered navy blue fondant wedding cake sweetened the entire day. Jordan Almonds from Stewart and Jasper Orchards were given as favors.   “The wedding completely fit who I am and was everything I had ever dreamed of,” Courtney says. “We are so thankful that we could do so many unique things on our special day.” —Jennifer Thornton

John & Sarah

Azevedo

July 11, 2009 Amorosa Inn and Gardens, Lodi Sarah remembers as a little girl that she always wanted the princess wedding and that’s exactly what she got. John and Sarah planned their dream wedding at Amorosa Inn and Gardens, located at Vino Con Brio winery in Lodi wine country. The setting was beautiful and romantic, and the wedding took place outdoors under the stars. Sarah loved that the staff at Amorosa handled everything so that she and John could relax on their special day and not worry about a thing.   Now that it’s all said and done, Sarah is happy to say that there were so many memorable moments—from the “I Do’s” to the couple’s first dance and Sara’s dance with her father, she can’t pick a more perfect time in her life. Sarah and John’s most fond memory is that they were blessed to have their children a part of the special day as well.   “You hear all the time of horrible mishaps, but I was lucky and can say that everything went perfectly,” says Sarah. “It takes so much time and energy to plan your special day and then its over in an instant, but the memories will never fade.” —Sarah Azevedo

Blake & Lindsey

Burnham August 8, 2009 Wine and Roses, Lodi

Lindsey Burnham had always pictured herself getting married at Wine and Roses, and her dream finally became a reality when she married her college sweetheart, Blake.   “I didn’t want to be one of those crazy brides who worries about every little detail,” Lindsey says. “So we sought out the best vendors, told them what we wanted, and they did the rest.”   Blake and Lindsey, who describe themselves as “best friends who love to have fun,” chose scarlet-bright roses and classic shades of red, brown, and gold with sparkles of copper to enhance the tranquility of tree-shaded Wine and Roses. “It is important to be true to yourself on your wedding day, because you’re committing everything that you are to the person that you will love for the rest of your life,” says Lindsey.   True to form, the Burnham’s wedding was filled with surprises, including uncaged macaw birds milling among guests during the ceremony and cocktail hour, a custom-made five-tiered wedding cake with praline and peach filling, and pottery votive candles. “We wanted the evening to be so great that no one would want to leave,” Lindsey says. “And that’s exactly what happened.” —Jennifer Thornton 56

Timothy & Sara

Wold

August 21, 2009 Wine and Roses, Lodi The moment that Tim and Sara Wold said “I Do” during a late summer ceremony held outdoors at Wine and Roses (where the bride works as an event specialist), an unforgettable moment in time turned into a lasting memory.   To create a wedding that was both “fun, intimate, and not too over the top,” Timothy and Sara mixed tradition with unique touches. A kaleidoscope of bright colors— pinks, reds, and oranges—lent the wedding warmth and vibrancy to complement the lushness of an already beautiful backdrop. Raspberry linens, Moroccan glass accents, and cherry red roses, Dahlias, and Ranunculus enhanced the colorful atmosphere. A co-parent bridal escort down the aisle, family-style seating, unorthodox ceremonial music, and ice cream sundaes served with the wedding cake further personalized the free-spirited wedding. An on-site photo booth was another enthusiastically received surprise. Guests playfully snapped photos of themselves to place in the couple’s guest book along with a written message.   “The wedding was a wonderful celebration with our friends and family, who we value and appreciate,” Sara says. “We wanted the day to be as much about them as it was about us.” —Jennifer Thornton

Kurtis & Bonnie

Anders

August 22, 2009 Stockton Golf and Country Club, Stockton For a wedding with timeless tradition and contemporary style, Kurtis and Bonnie Anders chose the elegant Stockton Golf and Country Club as the site of their outdoor summer nuptials.   The celebration got into full swing on the course’s first tee, and continued with an elegant reception accented with shades of blue and champagne, inspired by the wedding’s florals—hydrangeas, Polo Star roses, Dendrobium Orchids, and bluetoned Bella Donnas. “The wedding was very warm and romantic, which is a good way to describe Kurtis and myself,” Bonnie says. “We wanted the wedding to be classy and elegant but not boring.”   Among the ways the couple personalized their wedding, a family friend officiated their vows; they monogrammed all the wedding paper products, the wedding cake, and even the dance floor; and an ‘Ice Cream Bar’ opened for business after the cake cutting to represent Kurtis’s love of ice cream. To honor Bonnie’s Italian family and their love for cooking, the couple customized the evening’s main course.    “I think guests will describe it as a beautiful event with a fabulous party, great food, fun music, and lots of dancing,” Bonnie says. —Jennifer Thornton

Mark & Moriah

Barboza May 16, 2009 Saddle Creek Resort, Copperopolis A casual workplace friendship quickly turned into a whirlwind romance for Mark and Moriah Barboza. “We were both nurses at Loma Linda University Medical Center,” Moriah says. “He just kept asking me out, but I kept saying no until he finally wore me down.” Mark’s persistence paid off, and after dating for six months, he popped the question through song.   “He had written a song about my name,” she says. “The last line was ‘Moriah, will you marry me?’”   Eight months later, the couple finally tied the knot at Saddle Creek Resort. With the help of Moriah’s mother’s company, Quintana Design, for the wedding décor, hanging lanterns and manzanita trees complemented a color scheme of greens and browns, giving a fresh and organic feel to the outdoor ceremony.   The couple made sure that everyone felt involved during the big day. A photo booth was provided by Sound Extreme, and a ‘wisdom tree’ allowed guests to leave words of advice on cards hanging on the tree’s branches. —Rachel Filipinas

Korey & Bari

M arr

June 27, 2009 Morris Chapel, Stockton For many newly engaged couples, the wedding process can quickly turn from sweet to stressful as the magic of the proposal gives way to planning for the big day. Fortunately, Korey and Bari Marr weren’t one of these couples.   “I was one of the most easy-going brides I had ever met,” Bari jokes. “I wasn’t very picky, and I knew that if my overall idea was met, I’d be happy.”    The couple, who met through a mutual friend as students at Lodi High School, got engaged in Venice during a family trip to Europe. Two years later, Bari’s romantic wedding came to fruition.   The ceremony took place at Morris Chapel, located on the University of the Pacific campus, where the two go to school and where Bari’s parents also got married. Korey and Bari wrote their entire wedding ceremony, and also participated in a sand ceremony to symbolize their unity as a couple.   Despite her mellow approach to wedding planning, Bari admits to being a studied bride-to-be. “Before I even met Korey, I had a wedding binder started,” she says. “After a year of dating, I put his name on the front of it.” — Rachel Filipinas

ALTAR-NATIVE ATTENDENTS

Q: Is it appropriate to break with convention and have a “Man of Honor” at a traditional wedding? A: Opposite-sex attendants are fast becoming a new tradition, but logistics are still key. Attire for ‘men of honor’ should match the groomsmen, and they should have a boutonnière in place of a bouquet. It is vital that photographers know who’s who in the wedding party so that men of honor are included in attendants-of-the-bride photos and featured on the bride’s side in group shots.

SECURITY DETAIL

Q: Do I need insurance to guard against wedding gift theft? A: Theft is difficult to monitor at large, high-traffic weddings, so couples planning sizable ceremonies are wise to consider insurance such as WedSafe (www. wedsafe.com). Other ways to guard against theft is to forgo traditional gift tables; hire a gift attendant to stand watch, and security to deal with wedding crashers. Online gift registries that ship items direct to a residence are another safe (but not fail-safe) option.

INVITE ONLY

Q: Must I invite a friend to my wedding shower and bachelorette party if I cannot invite her to my wedding? A: Unless your wedding is “family only” or you want to commit a serious offense—and quite possibly break a friendship—the answer is unequivocally yes. Find other ways to cut costs.

WEDDING Q & A Advice and answers to your most pressing questions by Jennifer Thornton FAMILY TIES

Q: How can I foster intermingling at a small, informal wedding between family members who’ve never met? A: Do away with “bride” and “groom” sides for the actual ceremony and seat everyone together as a family. Further this feeling by hosting a family-style reception where guests are seated at long tables. Use place cards to put guests next to someone they know, and someone they’ve yet to meet. 68

San Joaquin Weddings

Winter/Spring 2010

sanjoaquinbride.com

NO KIDDING

Q: How do I politely ask wedding guests with kids to leave their little ones at home? A: Avoid making exceptions. Don’t allow certain guests to bring their kids while excluding the children of others. When faced with a similar situation, couples have been successful in setting up a designated, attended play area for kids that need supervision, or setting strict age limits from the get-go.

SINGLE FILE

Q: Must invited single guests also receive an invite for a guest? A: No, but things can get tricky when trying to determine what constitutes a committed relationship and a fling, so dispense with the dating gray area and set limits from the outset.

Cake

• Bakery: Before settling on a particular cake maker, shop around. Find a baker who is open to your vision, and has the skills and experience to execute it.

photo AC IMAGES

An ideal wedding cake should hit the sweet spot. To find the object of your confection, keep the following factors in mind.

photo LORI MAK A BE

Considerations

• Make it yours: A cake should complement your individual aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It should also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.

photo LORI MAK A BE

• Consider the logistics: It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making. Arrange a complimentary tasting, discuss plate/pillar rental fees and delivery costs, and be aware of payment and cancellation policies.

photo k at’s cak es

• Eye before you buy: Don’t be in a sugar rush to make a decision. Ask questions, sample the goods, and be open to other ideas.

FLOWER POWER

When it comes to picking out flowers for your wedding, don’t be a late bloomer; plan ahead to make sure that everything will come up roses on your big day.

• Make arrangements: Find a collaborative floral designer with whom you connect. Reputable florists will be able to supply references and a work portfolio.

• Identify your needs: Simple backyard weddings may call for a do-it-yourself bouquet of wildflowers and a discreet boutonniere, while formal occasions of size usually require a long list of intricate florals for everything from groomsmen and ring bearer corsages to botanical-rich tabletoppers and cake-accenting rose petals.

• Set a budget: Although fiscal demands of weddings vary depending on their elaborateness, plan on setting aside about 8 to 10 percent of your total budget for flowers.

• Stick to your style: Not only should blooms be season and style appropriate, they should also complement bridal party attire (especially the bride’s gown), venue, theme, and color palette. Bring fabric and/or color swatches to meetings with florists.
