Teacher in the Spotlight
mike bartram Changing Faces Theatre Company by Katy Berry
of one student offered their Acampo vineyard to use for a play, Bartram changed his plans and hopped on board. “I jumped on it thinking, ‘We’ll do it for one summer and keep it simple.’ It kind of took off from there.” Now, nine years later, Bartram runs the Changing Faces Theater Company, a non-profit organization that allows kids to put on a professional show each summer while learning production skills that run the gamut from acting to stage management. More importantly, the program encourages kids to be confident, responsible, and well-rounded individuals long after the curtains close. “I train my staff to teach kids the right process to put on a professional show,” says Bartram. “But also, and this might sound cheesy, they learn about being a good person.” Bartram uses tools like a swear jar on set to unify the diverse cast and promote a positive environment. Students also learn about responsibility and time management, as these values are vital to a successful production.

In 2002, Mike Bartram had plans to take a summer off from directing at Stockton’s Lincoln Unified Summer Theatre program, but as soon as he announced the news, kids began reaching out to express their disappointment. When the parents
The company puts on two shows each summer, both appearing the same night. The first is a pre-show put on by the younger children, and the latter is a full-length production. This June, the company will be performing “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” at Jessie’s Grove Winery in Lodi. Bartram hopes that one day the company will produce shows year-round, but more funding is necessary. Most of the staff are young volunteers, and many are previous students. “My lighting designer is in his mid-twenties. I remember working with him when he was only 8. Now he has a regular job, but he still comes back every summer.” The loyalty and enthusiasm for Changing Faces are a large part of why the productions have stayed so successful. “I love theatre. I have a passion for theatre. It’s what I love to do the most,” says Bartram. “But I also love teaching and seeing young people grow. And the ones who return each summer, they absolutely love Changing Faces. It’s good to see them find something in the summer that keeps them out of trouble and fosters growth, creativity, and imagination.” For more information: www.changingfacestheater.org

RiPKen WineRY
Just because you have little ones doesn’t mean you need to give up wine tasting—everything in moderation, after all. luckily, a number of lodi-based wineries offer a prime vintage point from which to enjoy several family-friendly activities and the spirits you love. here’s a taste of the very best. »
Pastries, characters and beer steins, oh my!
The Dancing Fox Winery, Bakery and Eatery, a European-inspired café located in quaint downtown Lodi, is a sweet treat for the child in all of us. Full of picture-book cheer and mischievous charm, Dancing Fox serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a not-to-be-missed Sunday Brunch. Patrons are immediately enveloped by a sweet-smelling waft of freshly-baked tartlets, mini cakes, cinnamon buns, and cookies from the moment they enter this old-world haven of culinary delights. While Mom and Dad enjoy a beer and/or wine tasting (the Riesling pairs exceptionally well with fruit tarts, by the way), an activity basket of books, art materials, and games will keep their kids in good spirits, too. The Dancing Fox’s fanciful collection of wine labels featuring renderings of painted characters—its namesake Fox, the Faun, Princess Saraphina, Old Father Vine, Rumplestilzkin, and Rip Van Cab to name a few—will absolutely enchant the littlest of Sippy Cuppers, as will the first three chapters of what will soon be a completed children’s story about Dancing Fox and the roots of the Lewis Family Estate Vineyards (available to read on the website). Children who mention San Joaquin Kids magazine at the Dancing Fox will also receive a free cookie to nosh on. www.dancingfoxwinery.com After leaving Dancing Fox, pick up a map at the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center and make a beeline for Ripken Vineyards and Winery, a small but sunny stopover that backs up its promise—“No Boring Wines”—with a zippy 2005 Rosato-Sangiovese that makes for a refreshing summer sangria, and several imaginative diversions for kids, who, thanks to the winery’s teeny-tiny tasting room, are never far from the watchful eye of their parents. If you ask (and be sure you do because
this winery is the friendliest and most amiable of those we sampled), sidewalk chalk will be provided for spontaneous muraling, kites will emerge for flying, and a pint-sized picnic table will be set up on the winery’s barefoot-ready grassy area for a kids-only picnic. An inflatable jump house also makes an appearance every so often. Ripken also wins big points for cleverness. Case in point: serving dark chocolate M&Ms to youngsters while their parents sample the winery’s signature Port. This summer, Ripken will host three Full Moon barbecues, featuring live music, a full dinner, dessert, and a sampling of 20 different wines. www.ripkenwine.com

Homegrown in the best possible sense, Jessie’s offers some of the best San Joaquin wines, period—we’re fans of the Earth, Zin and Fire—and serves as a gateway to fun for the whole family. History is what lends this winery its distinctive, old timey character. From the winery’s barn museum—a treasure trove of creaky, old farming equipment—to its lively and unpretentious tasting room, which on the weekends brims with casual, good-time sippers, Jessie’s is ideal for any age. Expansive grounds and green areas (cheers to open spaces!) set an ideal backdrop for Jessie’s popular Groovin’ in the Grove summer concert series, which invites families to lay down a blanket, unpack a picnic, and uncork a full-bodied Zin. Let’s face it, there aren’t too many places left where adults can dance underneath a grove of trees while their kids safely run rampant, just like the good old days. www.jgwinery.com

san joaquin kids and parent A picturesque drive from Jessie’s leads to Heritage Oak Winery, a Mark Twainian escape near the Mokelumne River, where you can’t help but look for Huck’s raft should it unexpectedly drift by with the adventurous rascal in tow. Visiting families will discover many joys at Heritage, not the least of which is a crisp and fragrant Sauvignon Blanc that Mom and Dad can sip while their kids find Tom Sawyer-like distraction by way of a rope swing and a beach near the winery’s lovely picnic area. Families are welcome to bring their own picnic fare or purchase picnic bags at the winery. Those with a fishing license are welcome to fish (provided they bring their own stick and string, of course). Wade in the water, amble through the meadow, or celebrate the beautiful natural surroundings of Heritage by taking a bird walk, as the winery is also home to a variety of birdhouses for western bluebirds and tree swallows. A chorus of lively chirps means it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. www.heritageoakwinery.com For the ultimate family destination in Lodi wine country, look no further than Michael-David Winery, of 7 Deadly Zins fame. This winery has everything that adults love (good food, great spirits) and kids can appreciate (animals, wildflowers, and fresh pies). A visit to Michael-David—equal parts farmer’s market, botanical garden, café, and bustling tasting counter (don’t be shy, squeeze in there)—can be as quick (get your artisan cheese and go) or as lengthy as the attention span of your children, which is likely to grow considerably here. Play bocce ball with the kids at the on-site bocce ball court, visit the U-pick wildflower garden, or pay fifty cents and pick up some seeds to feed the animals—rabbits, roosters, geese, goats, ducklings, and bunnies (the latter of which are available to purchase). Or, picnic under a giant willow tree and ask someone to take a photo of your family standing underneath a flowerflanked trellis, in front of the pond, or atop Michael-David’s sweet miniature bridge. www.lodivineyards.com

The Cool Zone
A new addition to the fair grounds this year, the cool zone is a great place for kids (and parents) to chill out while taking a break from exploring the fair. Look for the designated shaded area with refreshing misters.
On-Ground Entertainers
Special entertainers will be roaming the grounds to paint faces and create balloon animals. Be sure to catch a sing-along with Washboard Willy, the one-man band that has become a fair favorite.
“Community Representations”
People from the San Joaquin Community will give kids the opportunity to learn about their professions and get an interactive, hands-on experience for free.
Petting Zoo
Come learn about animals and make some new friends at the County Fair petting zoo. A wide range of farm animals will be available to feed and pet, along with a few exotic creatures as well. Pony rides will be available to purchase, but the rest of the zoo is free.

san joaquin kids and parent: your family
Here are five classic summer jobs and a few tips to get your children started:
1 2
Lemonade Stand: Nothing says summer like a neighborhood lemonade stand.
Tip: Keep the ingredients simple and cheap. This is a chance to teach your kids about profit margins, so help them minimize the costs to maximize their profit.
by Emily Olson
all jobs require advanced planning and preparation, which will suit the kid that needs instant dollars.
Tip: This is one of the few jobs which allows your children to actually earn more by doing a great job. Teach your kids the importance of doing high-quality work by explaining the incentive of tipping.
3
Dog Walking:
The simple job that combines everyday activities with earning opportunities.
Save now, spend later. While solid advice, that adage represents the money management approach of our parents’ generation. Today we need to offer our kids a fresher approach, and create interesting and gratifying ways to earn and save. When we teach our children the value of earning money, the importance of choosing how to spend it, and the freedom that comes from saving some of it, we empower them to confidently take the helm of their financial futures.
What if you knew how to control your wallet wisely five years ago? Ten years ago? If you are like the rest of us, hindsight is 20/20 and the greatest lost income stories begin with “If I only knew then what I know now…” This is the time to translate those invaluable lessons we’ve learned into activities, learning opportunities, and conversations to help our next gen-ers bridge the gap between the thrill of earning money, the importance of spending money, and the sometimes impossible task of saving money. This could be the “summer school” which helps positively shapes your children’s financial confidence for a lifetime. »
Tip: Help your children see that there are ways to earn money while still enjoying their regular activities. Kids can even join forces to make the dog walks more social for both the kids and the dogs.
4
Lawn Mowing: The ideal job to plan and save
with. Because lawns will always need to be mowed again in two weeks, this is the ideal job to plan out your summer income.
Tip: Have your child map out his or her weekly spending budget, and determine how many lawns that equates to, then add one more lawn for the “savings” jar. Seeing their earnings scheduled on the calendar will keep your kids dedicated to their long-term job all summer long.
5
Babysitting: Hands-down the best summer job in
town because your children’s hourly wage can increase depending on their skills.
Tip: Illustrate the lesson of ‘Learning more means earning more’. Babysitters can increase their hourly wage by $1 or more simply by learning CPR and First Aid. Check your community center for ongoing certifications in both.

The Yoga Way of Life
Local yoga studios provide an outlet for the mind and body By JAMIE MENAKER
Photo: i-Stock

f you’ve never taken a yoga class, you may want to add it to your short list. The gradual stretching of the body is all about creating spiritual and physical balance, and who doesn’t want a healthier body and clearer thoughts—especially when you have kids? Even if you’ve taken a class at your local gym, you will be pleasantly surprised by the smaller classes and more personalized instruction of a specialized yoga studio. Following are some local yoga studios to try.
The Yoga Center 235 Dorris Place, Stockton
(209) 463-3330, www.stocktonyoga.com
tucked neatly into a small, unassuming storefront not far from the miracle mile, the light wood floor, sea blue walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows bring a sense of calm from the moment you enter. most of the almost twenty classes offered weekly practice integrated yoga, which brings in and combines aspects of the different forms of yoga. all levels are welcome here, from intro to yoga to yoga for Strength and flexibility, and be sure to check out class series like yoga for kids.

Bikram Yoga Studio 2341 Pacific Ave., Stockton
(209) 948-YOGA, www.bikramyogastockton. com
Bikram, or “hot,” yoga has been quickly gaining popularity since its start. a series of twenty-six poses and two breathing exercises, all in a room heated to 105 degrees, is meant to release toxins from deep in your body tissues through your sweat, and promote greater flexibility in your yoga poses. owners mark and helena monica are welcoming and dedicated to furthering your yoga practice, and this studio offers twenty-three classes weekly in the morning and evening to satisfy work and family schedules. Mom On A Mission
Currently: Owner, San Francisco Floral Company, Stockton Married to: Mike Klooster Kids: Cosmo, 4 LIKE MOST MOMS, JENNY KLOOSTER HAS A LOT ON HER PLATE. The owner of Stockton’s San Francisco Floral Co., she works more than full-time operating and growing her business, while husband Mike Klooster is also busy as the keyboard player for nationally touring band Smash Mouth. Add in 4-year-old son Cosmo, and how do they do it all? “Having Cosmo after being in business only two years came with some hefty challenges, says Jenny. “But I wouldn’t change it for all the money in the world.” San Francisco Floral Co. is Jenny’s second flower shop. Consistently voted as the ‘Best in San Joaquin’, the shop is always busy. “We are a full service florist, everything from I’m Sorry to I Do,” says Jenny. San Francisco Floral is also the only “green” flower shop in San Joaquin. According to Jenny, her son spends some time with her at the store on occasion, where she tries to instill in him her work ethic. “I believe that it’s actually good for him to see both Mike and I work and feel part of the process,” she says. The Kloosters seem to have found balance when it comes to work and play. “I work and he plays,” Jenny jokes about her musician husband. “In all honesty, I count on my parents a lot in the summer when Mike is touring and I have weddings. Cosmo loves spending time with them, and living across the street makes it easy. It’s all about not being shy to ask for help when you need it.” Jenny has also recently completed her first book, The Swearing Mom’s Guide to Life and The Art of Floral Design. It’s a handbook of sorts for the ‘average mom’ who enjoys entertaining and taking some of her life back for herself. It’s candidly written, much like Jenny speaks. “I wanted to write a book full of ideas that were actually attainable to a regular person,” says Jenny, “To provide women like my girlfriends with practical yet beautiful decor that doesn’t require vast floral knowledge or deep pockets.” The book will be available at the end of June on Amazon.com as well as the flower shop’s website, www.sffloral.com.
