THE 27TH ANNUAL
TRACY DRY BEAN FESTIVAL BY MICHELE BIRD
DELL’OSSO FAMILY FARM OPENING DAY BY MICHELE BIRD
With October right around the corner, it’s time for the return of chilly weather, Halloween, and the Dell’Osso Family Farm Pumpkin Maze. Get geared up for the 16th season of scares, thrills, and adventures as opening day rolls around on October 5. For those who are not familiar with the annual event, the Dell’Osso Family Farm is not solely home to a corn maze. A visit to the farm is a traditional event for many families thanks to the wide selection of activities for every age to enjoy. Put your navigation skills to the test as you venture through this year’s unique corn maze. The design differs every year in size, but the theme always remains the same. Some past designs have included a pumpkin wagon and a flying ghost. If adventure sparks your interest, take a ride on the zip lines and brave the aerial ropes course complete with a walk the plank feature. If you’ve always wanted to soar through the sky, these are both activities worth checking out! A pumpkin maze wouldn’t be the same without a haunted castle and mystery tour ride to spook guests. Parents are sure to be pleased with the number of kid-friendly activities at the farm. There will be pony rides, a petting zoo, jumping pillows, face painting, a tractor train, and much more this year! No visit to Dell’Osso Family Farm is complete without finding the perfect pumpkin to take home for carving and decorating. There is a fantastic selection to choose from and you’re guaranteed to find just the pumpkin you’ve been searching for. Whether you visit once or a few times this season, Dell’Osso Family Farm offers the community a memorable experience every time they step onto the property. From pumpkin blasters to hay rides, this is a local tradition not to be missed.

Community, food, and lots of fun are just a handful of ways to describe the Tracy Dry Bean Festival. The annual event will be celebrating its 27th year and is set to take place on September 7 – 8 in downtown Tracy. There are a wide variety of activities for guests to choose from at the two-day event. Whether you’re going with a group of friends or with the entire family, all ages are welcome and there is something for everyone to enjoy! Guests can create a unique itinerary for each day of the festival since the entertainment options are virtually endless. A 5K and 10K Bean Run will begin on the morning of September 7 at the Tracy Public Library parking lot. Interested participants can register beginning at 6 a.m. There will also be a car show that same day from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Bank of America parking lot located on 10th and B Street. Raffle prizes and awards will be given out during the show. For those who are foodies, there will be various booths offering everything from fresh lemonade to kettle corn. Local chefs can sign up for the chili cook-off on September 8. Festival patrons are encouraged to come out to the chili crowd tasting kicking off at 1 p.m. If chili isn’t your cup of tea, stop by the bean burrito eating contest to see who is crowned champion. The festival has a family-friendly environment thanks to all of the carnival rides and games on-site. Take a walk on the adventurous side by riding down the mega-slide or enjoying the view on the Ferris wheel. There are also numerous carnival games where you can test your luck and potentially walk away with a prize! Anyone who likes to shop will enjoy the arts and crafts vendors that will be setting up shop throughout the downtown streets. The festival is anything but short of live entertainment as many local bands will be hitting the stage this year including 209 All Stars, Jimmy Ashley, and Two Tone Steiny. Most of all, festival admission is free and is the perfect way to top off your summer vacation. For a full list of entertainment schedules and activities at this year’s event, please visit tracybeanfestival.com.

TRICK-ORTREATING? QUICK TIP REMINDERS
S A F E
Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.
H A L L O W E E N 10
Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation. Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flameresistant costumes.

Kids Think Inside the Box to Help the Homeless On September 13th through the 14th, McHenry House Family Shelter in Tracy will host their fourteenth annual “Kids in a Box” fundraiser. Children are invited to sign up, either individually or as a group, decorate boxes, and camp out in their boxes overnight at St. Bernard’s. The goal, in addition to raising funds for the shelter, is to give participants a small taste of homelessness and trade their comfortable rooms for a box for one night. Kids in a Box began in 1999 when nine-year-old Rainey Lomolino spent one night in a box in Lincoln Park, asking friends, family and neighbors to sponsor her. Since then, Kids in a Box has grown to nearly 300 participants. Prizes are given to children who raise the most money, and there is a contest for best decorated boxes. Dinner, snacks and breakfast will be provided, and there will be movies and entertainment while the kids camp out. — Jessica Clare

Can’t
Compete with Mom Grandparents can be a lifesaver once kids are in the picture. They can be great coaches through the unknown for new parents, and offer up the sort of tips and tricks that can only be learned through years of experience. They can be loving and enthusiastic babysitters when you need some grown-up time. It takes a village to raise a child, the old saying goes, and who better to turn to for support than the people who raised you and your spouse? Unfortunately, sometimes the best intentions go awry and support turns into competition. What can you do to keep the parent and grandparent relationship healthy?
“Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries!” advises Jill Marquette, marriage and family therapist. Setting boundaries and communicating with new grandparents can help head off future conflict and frustration. Be clear about what you need and want from your parents and in-laws, and don’t be afraid to tell them when they’re stepping on your toes. “Establish role identity out of love and not resentment,” says Marquette. By being preemptive and talking through issues as they arise, you can prevent tension and keep your family strong and positive. Also, include your partner in discussions about where lines should be drawn. You’ll be more effective if you talk to parents and in-laws as a team, and no one will be singled out as “the bad guy.” If the grandparents are getting pushy about spending time with the kids, or have a tendency to show up unannounced or when you’ve already made plans, talk to them about respecting your time and space. “Make a schedule for them to spend time without you around,” Marquette suggests. Arranging visits without you around allows for some bonding time, and can give you a break. Remember that they just want to spend time with their new grandchildren, but encourage them to plan things with you, first. No matter how frustrated you may be with your parents or inlaws, try to remember that they probably have the best intentions. “Acknowledge grandparents for wanting to help and appreciate their wisdom,” Marquette suggests. “Nod when being offered advice to avoid

power struggles, and then carry on as the parent.” Grandparents are an important and irreplaceable part of any child’s life, and as long as they aren’t neglectful or abusive, they deserve to be around. Just don’t be afraid to remind them that it’s your turn to raise kids.

Don’t
Forget DATE Night Having kids is a tough job. Before they came around you could probably go to the movies without thinking twice, or grab a bite to eat in a restaurant without stressing over whether they had crayons. Now your schedule revolves around dance classes, potty training pandemonium, and all the other joys of child rearing. But
16
SAN JOAQUIN PARENT & KIDS SEPT/OCT l 2013
just because you’re devoted to your kids doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take time for yourself too. Whether it’s a date night with your spouse, or a night out with the girls/guys, giving yourself time to unwind with other adults is key when keeping your sanity in check, and will help you be a better parent in the long run.
SIGNS IT’S TIME FOR A DATE NIGHT: YOU’RE TALKING LIKE A TODDLER. Have you started saying “mommy has to go potty” or “daddy’s going night-night?” If so put down the sippy cups. It’s time to reconnect with the adult world. WHO AM I AGAIN? Before you got that major title of mommy or daddy—you were just, well, you. The person you were before becoming a parent shouldn’t have to disappear in a tidal wave of Dora the Explorer stuff. What sparks your creative or intellectual flame? Is it hearing live music, snapping photos, taking hikes in nature? When was the last time you made time for those things? YOU AND YOUR SPOUSE HAVE BECOME PLATONIC. After a long day, you and your partner are finally alone. You dim the lights, get under the covers,
and… pass out. There’s hardly a kiss goodnight before you’re both snoring. Parenthood shouldn’t be synonymous with “death to romance.” If this sounds all too familiar- then a date night is definitely in order. Kids tend to model their future relationships from the example their parents give them—reconnecting with your spouse will help make you both a loving, united front which is good for the whole family. And if you’re single, having a girls’ or guys’ night out can help you unwind and feel like a “real” adult again. Start by picking the day and securing a babysitter. If you don’t have someone dependable to ask, then contact the Family Resource and Referral Center of San Joaquin for local suggestions (frrcsj.org). Next, get gussied up for your big night out. It will boost your confidence, get you excited, and help your spouse remember what a fox he or she married, (adios, sweatpants!) Finally, when you’re on your date, talk about anything except the kids. If you’re with your spouse, reminisce about the first time you met, the first time you kissed, and other fun details. Hold hands, laugh, and enjoy a night of freedom. Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty or call the babysitter ten times. Your kids may actually enjoy the night off as much as you do, and taking some personal time to recharge is the best way to stay on your parenting game.

education PROFILES The month of September marks the end of the summer and start of the school year. There are many local San Joaquin County schools that offer dynamic education programs that lead to graduation and student success.
There are many incredible opportunities available to students ranging from scholarships to enrichment programs in the arts. The possibilities are endless when you have the passion for education and learning.
ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL BY CASEY CHATFIELD
St. Mary’s High School (SMHS) is a Roman Catholic, four-year, co-educational college preparatory school. SMHS has been educating students for over 137 years, making it one of the oldest institutions in Stockton. SMHS is responsible for educating many of the current local business and community leaders that have made a positive impact in San Joaquin County. In addition, many community members have made SMHS their first choice in education for their children. SMHS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Western Catholic Education Association, which certifies the school’s integrity and authenticates it is an institution of learning. St. Mary’s has one of the most reasonable tuition costs for Catholic High Schools and also offers financial assistance to those who qualify. With 925 students, and a fifteen-to-one student to teacher ratio, each student is challenged on a daily basis and is prepared for higher education after graduation. The Class of 2013 were offered a total of $10,466,873 in scholarships, and 99 percent of the graduating seniors chose to continue their formal education.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION BY MICK FOUNTS
If you are a parent, you know that one of the most difficult times for you is when your child goes to school. You want to find the best place for your child to be successful. If you have a special needs child, it can be one hundred times harder…if you don’t have help. The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) operates specialized educational programs for the neediest students in the county, as-well-as a Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) for 14 school districts or programs, and 10 non-pubic schools. THE SJCOE OPERATES SEVEN UNIQUELY DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT ARE LOCATED AT 31 SITES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY: 1. The McFall School, located in Manteca, is a model site which serves
young children ages 18 months to age 6 who have Autism, infant services to students with Low-Incidence Disabilities, hosts a Head Start program, and provides services for preschoolers with multi-handicapping needs. 2. Redwood School, located in Stockton, serves students from age five to
22 focusing on functional independent living skills, vocational education, community based experiences, motor development, communication skills, and providing a variety of vocational education opportunities. 3. The Believe! Program serves students in grades K through 12 who have

emotional and behavioral needs. These classes are located in four areas throughout the county, and in eight classrooms. Students are supported by mental health specialists and behavioral specialists. Students are provided outings to support student success as dictated by their behavioral plan. 4. The Deaf Education Program is located in two school sites with a total of five classrooms. These programs offer an Aural pre-school class, total communication preschool through grade 12, educational interpreters to support students who are able to be mainstreamed into traditional classes, and educational interpreters to support extracurricular activities such as track, swimming, football, and wrestling. 5. The Young Adult Programs serves students in ages 18 to 22. These programs operate in four locations and in four classrooms located in the community. Functional
academics are melded with instruction in daily living skills. Community based instruction is the focus of this program with the goal of building on the students’ functional skills in the community. Students participate in the highly successful Workability I program which places student in vocational experience and training situations. 6. Moderate and severe classes are provided on district sites such as Manteca, Lincoln, Tracy, Linden, Lammersville, Jefferson, and Escalon. These programs serve
students in grades K through 12 and focus on the goal of completing appropriate mainstreaming options, functional academics, communication skills, and the development of social/pragmatic skills. Another goal is complete infusion of the student on to the district site, as a member of the school community. 7. Autism programming on district sites occurs in Manteca, Tracy, Jefferson, and Lincoln districts. Students served are in grades K through six. Teachers use Evidence Based Practices with the foundation of Applied Behavior Analysis to mainstream student into appropriate district classes.
As you can imagine, this is only an overview of a very complex and comprehensive approach to meeting the educational needs of our county’s most special students. In addition to very specialized school sites, we provide support services such as language, speech, and hearing specialists; adaptive physical education teachers; occupational therapists; teachers for the visually handicapped; teachers for the deaf and hard of hearing; social workers; nurse consultants; Autism specialists; behavior intervention specialists; and psychologists. As was mentioned, we also oversee the SJCOE Special Education Local Plan Area. Our goal is to best serve the students who need us the most, coupled with providing the best services to the parents who need us the most. When you have a question about special needs students, please call my team at the San Joaquin County Office of Education. We are here to help.

SNELL'S PRE-KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL BY MARGARET ROSENGARTEN
Snell’s Pre-Kindergarten School is the oldest privately owned pre-school in California having served Stockton and surrounding communities since our first class graduated in 1907. We have been a family tradition for many and a must for those who have wanted educational excellence and a joyous learning experience for their children. Snell’s teaching philosophy combines old-fashioned values along with new concepts and skills for the challenges children and parents face in the 21st Century. We work with the individual youngster to facilitate and expand his/her learning capabilities. We keep abreast of the necessary academic standards and skills needed upon entering Kindergarten, maintaining our priority for each child to understand and learn the life skills needed to become a good and happy productive citizen. Keeping with the tradition established by Miss Snell in 1906, we continue developing innovative, specialized programs. We have maintained our traditional Pre-Kindergarten half day programs and also offer a before-and-after-school extended Educare program. This supports today’s working parents by giving their children opportunities in our two separate facilities. We offer additional enriching programs such as ballet, gymnastics, computers (with internet access), and a sensory integration program. During the summer we offer our Pre-K Readiness programs along with fun programs which include science, art, and cooking classes, as well as our long-standing summer swimming lessons.
Snell’s is currently accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year, our 107th year! FOR MORE INFORMATION:

CATHEDRAL OF THE ANNUNCIATION SCHOOL BY MARIA MCCAFFREY
Annunciation School was founded in 1956 in the building that originally housed St. Mary’s High School. The school, a part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton, is the parish school of Cathedral of the Annunciation, in central Stockton. The school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Western Catholic Education Association. Inspired by the teachings of Christ, Annunciation teaches the whole child within the Catholic, Christian tradition. In other words, while maintaining a high standard of academic excellence, the faculty and staff provide a safe environment, which continually fosters learning, serving, and achieving. The curriculum is currently transitioning from the California State Standards to the Common Core State Standards, with the infusion of religious education and a wide variety of enrichment activities. The dynamic environment is rich with parent volunteers, community service opportunities, energetic students, and innovative faculty and staff members. The students thrive in this pastoral setting with elevated expectations, as evidenced by their performance at the high school level, where they take their faith based values and continue to maintain a strong work ethic, take on leadership roles, and carry on to graduate from college.

BACK TO
School BY NISSA HALLQUIST
Getting yourself and the kids back into a school-ready schedule is not often the easiest thing to accomplish—kids don’t usually like losing the freedom of summer, and parents need to adjust to the additional activities associated with school as well. Getting back into the swing of things doesn’t have to be complicated or unpleasant. The following should help make the transition back into school-mode simple and stress-free.
MEAL/SNACK PLANNING
A lack of time in the morning means lunches should be planned and prepared as much as possible beforehand. For that antsy time right after the kids get home from school, be sure to have
24
SAN JOAQUIN PARENT & KIDS SEPT/OCT l 2013
plenty of healthy snacks on-hand, both salty (pretzels, string cheese, veggies and low-fat dip) and sweet (fruit, yogurt, juice).
SCHOOL CLOTHES AND SUPPLIES
Being sent off to school stocked up with the basic necessities is the ideal way to start the new school year off on the right foot. This can be taken quite literally. Unless there was some major growth spurt, there’s no need to get a brand new wardrobe, but a new, hip, first-day-of-school outfit and/or a new pair of shoes can help your children feel more confident. The same is true for fresh pens, pencils, backpacks, and so forth. It’s the small things.
STUDY TIME
There’s no avoiding homework, so time needs to be set aside every day for studying. After school, the TV gets turned off and books get opened. Helping with your children’s schoolwork—or just being around while it’s going on—is also a good way to spend time as a family and keep connected with everything going on in each others’ lives. (This is a nice habit to get into at any time of year.)
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Activities beyond strict academics— sports, band, dance—help kids in socializing and gaining a more wellrounded education. The number and type of activities is dependent first on your children’s school schedule and study time, as well as your own availability to provide needed support and/or transportation. While at least one outside activity is desirable, filling every waking moment can be exhausting and nerve-racking, so find a happy medium just right for your family.
ATTITUDE
Even if things do get a bit stressful and non-stop for a time at the start of school, work on maintaining a positive outlook. Take a deep breath. If you’re relaxed and upbeat, your children will likely follow suit. And having everyone start off with a positive attitude always makes it much easier to get back into a workable routine.

NATURE WALKS With the weather cooling down and the leaves just about ready to turn, now is the perfect time of year to really enjoy being outdoors. Communing with nature is also a great way to get a little exercise while getting away from it all, and in San Joaquin we don’t have to drive far to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. Stretch your legs and enjoy all the beauty and tranquility of nature in autumn with a peaceful, leisurely stroll along one of San Joaquin’s nature trails.
CASWELL MEMORIAL STATE PARK Located along the Stanislaus River near Ripon, Caswell Memorial State Park is home to a preserved section of oak forest (surrounded by other lush plant species) as well as several species of animals, including the endangered brush rabbit, red-tailed hawk, and many other types of wildlife. Numerous day hike/ nature trails traverse the 258-acre park, offering a glimpse into what the riparian ecosystem of the valley would have looked like in pre-historic, pristine times. Off the main Oak Forest Trail (one mile round-trip), 26

various other trails meander through the forest and along the river. 28000 South Austin Rd., Ripon. For directions, hours and other park information, call (209) 599-3810.
LODI LAKE PARK
All the beauty of San Joaquin’s unique (and diminishing) riparian woodland ecosystem is carefully preserved within the 58-acre Lodi Lake Nature Area and presented to the public. Bordering the Mokelumne River and Lodi Lake, Lodi Lake Park has a one and-a-half mile long nature trail that winds all the way through the park. It’s easy to traverse, and flat the whole way though. If at the end of the trail you are still eager to learn more about the area, you can also visit the Lodi Lake Discovery Center. 1301 W. Turner Rd., Lodi. Managed by Lodi Parks and Recreation at (209) 333-6742.
OAK GROVE REGIONAL PARK
This 180-acre park is located in Stockton
near Spanos Park West. As the name would imply, it features an oak forest setting, the 10-acre Oak Grove Lake, and the Oak Grove Nature Center, not to mention two nature trails: a one anda-half mile jaunt among old growth trees, and a quarter-mile trail that is handicapped accessible. 4520 W. Eight Mile Rd., Stockton. Call (209) 953-8800 or (209) 331-7400..
