36 THAT’S AMORE!
Ah, pasta. It’s easily one of our favorite foods—full of carbs, showered in cheese, and paired with sauce-soaked pieces of homemade bread. It’s hard to imagine a better combination of flavors. And when it comes to pasta, we don’t discriminate. We’ll take bowls of spaghetti, tossed in rich Bolognese, angel hair coated in layers of olive oil and garlic, or plush pillows of ravioli stuffed with combinations of meat and cheeses that make our mouth water. While pasta is delicious around the globe, some of our favorite varieties are specialties from Italy, doused in the flavors that distinguish these dishes from neighboring countries. 52 TAKE A BREAK IN BRECKENRIDGE

Valentine’s Day may conjure up visions of high-end meals in fancy establishments, elbow to elbow (or, you know, still six feet apart) with other diners making the most of the holiday with someone they love, or at least like a little bit. There is, however, another alternative to the formal night out: ordering in. BY NORA HESTON TARTE

celebrating Valentine’s Day with a night out or keeping it casual at home, we’ve packed our pages with love notes to help you impress that special someone in your life, to give you the tools for the best galentine’s day ever, or to simply have a night where you celebrate the most important relationship in your life—the one with yourself. Researching our Love Facts story this month turned up more tidbits than we could share on one page. We didn’t even have room to tell you that the first Valentine was written from prison, that more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold in the U.S. every year, or that February 14 holds the title as the second largest card-giving holiday of the year (after Christmas). That means V-Day even beats out Mother’s Day (although it comes in second behind Mother’s Day for floral gifts)! Did you also know that Valentine’s Day cards date back to 1913? Which means we’ve been gifting each other mass-produced notes of affection for over a century. It’s no secret that I love Disney and while Lady & The Tramp might not be my favorite of the classics, it’s definitely the one that comes to mind when we start talking about coupling up. The infamous scene where the two pups share a plate of spaghetti was the inspiration behind our That’s Amore! feature, a fun 12-page feature that celebrates our county’s seemingly endless supply of Italian fare. We hand-picked a variety of favorites from the SJC pool of Italian eateries and included dishes to impress from each menu. Then, we did the work of pairing each meal with beverages that would complement them, may it be a glass of vino or a cocktail (signature or classic). If you can, dining in is a great way to support local businesses, but even if you’re choosing to stay at home, you can still order up a plate to share, pick up a bottle of vino (if you ask, staff can even suggest a pairing for you) or take advantage of the cocktails to-go programs offered at many of our local restaurants. Whatever it is you decide to do, we hope you do it in style! Bon Appetit, friends. Happy reading!

LAST THOUGHTS GALENTINE’S DAY As much as we love to celebrate this special day of love with our significant others, there’s something to be said for toasting to your besties, too. Galentine’s Day is a fun tradition where you give notice to the equally important female friendships in your life (outside of romantic relationships) with small tokens of appreciation (chocolates, anyone?), girls-only date nights, or love notes of the friend-zone variety. Don’t forget to spoil the ladies and set aside time to shower them with a little love this holiday, too!
CAN’T GET ENOUGH PIZZA If we haven’t made it clear yet, the staff at San Joaquin Magazine goes gaga over a good pizza. This month we’re celebrating with our favorite take-out pies from David’s Pizza paired with a bottle of vino. And for good measure, we’re ordering that pizza in the shape of a heart—see page 61 for details!

For Carlos Carrasco, COVID-19 presented an unexpected opportunity to rediscover his childhood hobby, connect with his daughters, and lift the spirts of local kids. What started with his daughter’s desire to get out of the house and stave off the quarantine stircrazies turned into a monumental undertaking to equip 43 local kids with their own skateboards. Carlos and his family moved to Lodi at the end of 2019 and his 11 and 12-year-old daughters had hardly adjusted to their new school before they were forced into distance learning due to the pandemic. “I found skateboarding as a kid watching Bart Simpson and Back to the Future 2,” Carlos recalls. “When my 12 year old asked if she could get a skateboard, I said ‘yes’ with a big smile on my face.” For Carlos, it wasn’t just

in life.” Before long, the neighborhood kids started to take notice and they asked Carlos to teach them how to skate, but he decided to do more than that. He started asking around and collecting spare parts to build boards for the kids in his neighborhood. Wicked Ways, a Lodi tattoo parlor and skate shop, was even able to donate spare parts for the project. Then, Carlos turned to Facebook. “I figured other people might have an old skateboard lying around or parts, so I asked for
donations on Facebook swap sites and the support was overwhelming,” he says. Carlos spent his free time teaching neighborhood kids how to build their boards and how to skate. Once all the kids in his neighborhood had boards, he started seeking out other kids at the skatepark and finding families on Facebook who could use them. “I feel good because it got my kids and other kids to get off their phones and playing outside like I did when I was a kid,” Carlos says. “I’m happy to bring back some of the old school.” Donations slowed over the winter, but Carlos hopes to keep collecting parts to be able to give more skateboards to local kids. He can be contacted at carrascoconstruction@ hotmail.com or donations can be dropped off at Wicked Wayz or Wildwood Skate Shop, both in Lodi.

the Coronavirus spawned a new hobby, a new business, and life lessons rarely experienced by young children. The Whirlow family is no stranger to owning a small business. In the family are Whirlow’s Tossed and Grilled and Taps Barrel House on the Miracle Mile. So, when Ryan and Carrie Whirlow's four young boys found themselves in need of a creative outlet while stuck at home, starting a business made sense. Their neighbor, George Denton of Denton’s Custom Woodworks, suggested making cutting boards to the Whirlow’s eldest son Mason, who jumped at the chance to learn a new trade. Denton brought Mason a box of wood pieces to get him started and he and his father created their first board—as a gift to his mother. What they didn’t expect was how much fun they would have creating that board. Mason, along with his brothers Chase (9), Logan (6), and Brody (2), decided to embark on a journey to make custom cutting boards for locals and earn a little pocket money while doing so. It’s a true family affair, with Dad Ryan in charge of operating the heavy equipment, Mason assisting with cutting and design, and Chase plaining, sanding, and sales. At six years old, Logan helps wherever he is needed, and Brody 2, uses his charming smile and curiosity to act as salesman for the crew. Carrie, their mother, takes charge of the finances, social media, and oversight of the business. As a result, the boys are learning the ins and outs of owning a business. Terms like profit, expenses, sales, and workload, have taught Grab your own custom them more than they could have cutting board from Whirever imagined. “Working together low Woodworks by mesand learning about business has saging them on Facebook been such a great accomplishment at Whirlow Woodworks for our boys,” says Carrie. “We are or on Instagram at SO thankful for the support we whirlow_woodworks. have received!”

WINTER SKIN 101 GOLDEN STATE DERMATOLOGY HAS TIPS FOR FIGHTING DRY, ITCHY SKIN NORA HESTON TARTE
Does dry skin have you down? In winter, dehydrated skin, or xerosis, is the most common skin complaint. That’s because cold air holds less moisture than warm air and humidity levels are lower in winter months. Because San Joaquin County already has a drier climate, this can quickly lead to cutaneous xerosis, dry skin that can become itchy and uncomfortable. “As we age, the skin naturally also becomes drier, thus xerosis is even more prevalent in the elderly population,” says Christian Jones, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist in Manteca with Golden State Dermatology. The best course of action is to apply a heavy cream moisturizer such as Cerave, Cetaphil, or Eucerin, liberally and often. Dr. Jones suggest dousing your body in the stuff after a shower to help trap the moisture in. It’s also important to avoid scratching as this can lead to rashes called eczemas that

TAXES IN THE TIME OF COVID TIPS FROM IACOPI, LENZ & COMPANY ACCOUNTANCY CORPORATION BY ANGELA RUDOLPH Sitting down with a nice cup of coffee, confusing forms with strange combinations of numbers and letters sent to you by the government, and racking your brain to recall everything that’s changed in your life in the last year…ah, yes! fusing year, it’s time yet again to file taxes. But don’t despair, seasoned tax professionals Susan Lenz and Mike Anselmo from Iacopi, Lenz & Company have some tax tips to help you navigate this year’s taxes. The Economic Impact Payments (EIP) or “stimulus checks,” might affect your taxes this year. Mike explains; “They are an advance against a 2020 federal tax credit and as such are not taxable for Federal or California purposes. The amount of the advance credit was based on information reported on the individual’s 2019 return. If the 2019 return had not been filed at the time the advance credit was issued, then the 2018 return information was used. The EIP credit will be reconciled and reported on the individual’s 2020 return using 2020 information. If the advance amount was less than the actual credit, the individual will be due an additional credit on their 2020 return. If the advance amount was more than the actual credit, taxpayers will not be required to repay any of the credit. All individuals who received a stimulus check should have received IRS Notice 1444, which details the amount they received.” Whether or not you received a stimulus check, 2020 has been very different for most folks. Mike and Susan’s best advice is to seriously consider going to a tax preparer this year. If people decide to selfprepare, Mike says, “it is essential that you study the changes in the tax law by reading articles on 2020 tax preparation.” However, if your return is not likely to be straightforward, find a tax preparer who is well informed, trustworthy, and has good communication skills. While the tax deadline to either submit a fully prepared return or to pay your taxes in 2019 was extended to July 15, 2020, there has not been any official statements that any kind of blanket extension to the deadline will happen again for 2020. It’s best to get ahead of the game by collecting your forms, considering your options of self-preparation or going to a professional, and making that decision as soon as possible.

SAN JOAQUIN'S BEST PASTA RESTAURANTS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD

Amore!
Ah, pasta. It’s easily one of our favorite foods—full of carbs, showered in cheese, and paired with saucesoaked pieces of home-made bread. It’s hard to imagine a better combination of flavors. And when it comes to pasta, we don’t discriminate. We’ll take bowls of spaghetti tossed in rich Bolognese, angel hair coated in layers of olive oil and garlic, or plush pillows of ravioli stuffed with combinations of meat and cheeses that make our mouth water. While pasta is delicious around the globe, some of our favorite varieties are specialties from Italy, doused in the flavors that distinguish these dishes from neighboring countries.
For Valentine’s Day, we’ve got you covered. We’re grabbing our loved ones and channeling Lady & The Tramp vibes at the best Italian spots in San Joaquin County. If you’re still looking for a dinner spot for the most romantic night of the year, we suggest thumbing through these pages for inspiration, then making a reservation for two. Or, if you choose to stay in, order a couple of meals to go along with a bottle of vino. For a special treat, try making the restaurant’s best cocktails at home with the included recipes.

Make De Vega’s Popular Garlic Bread Directions:
They’re giving up the recipe for the infamous garlic bread served at De Vega Brothers. Use the below to recreate the masterpiece at home.
Cut a loaf of French bread into a butterfly (cutting the loaf almost in two but leaving it connected). Prepare a butter spread by soaking minced garlic into melted butter. Then, apply the melted butter evenly across the loaf. Top with sprigs of fresh rosemary (as desired). Let the butter soak into the bread for two hours before cooking. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees and cook bread for five minutes or until golden brown.
1 loaf of French bread Minced garlic Butter Fresh rosemary (as much as desired)
De Vega Brothers Pasta Del Mare:
We love the lightness of this pasta dish. A base of rotelli pasta—colorful spirals—is tossed in a white cream sauce but balanced by a trio of seafood— salmon, shrimp, and scallops—sautéed in olive oil. A collection of vegetables only adds to the lightness, with bell paper, tomato, garlic, and onion, finished with a lemon zest.
Best Wine Pairing:
With an effortless dish such as this one, you’ll want to avoid anything too bold. Instead, opt for a chardonnay to play against the cream sauce, or, if you prefer red, a lighter pinot noir.
Best Cocktail Pairing:
Again, you’ll want to order something light that doesn’t overpower this dish. Anything with a vodka or gin base will suit it best.

Mezzo
Agnolotti Dal Plin
The Agnolotti Dal Plin is a pasta dish unlike any other in the city. The stuffed creation—perfected by Chef Ruby—is packed with rabbit, port, and Swiss chard inside of a homemade pasta. The dish is bursting with flavor, finished in a brown butter, sage, and fresh Italian gremolata (a green sauce traditionally made of chopped parsley, lemon zest, and garlic).
Eggplant Parmesan
Want to skip the pasta? Those looking for a vegetarian dish will delight in the flavors of Mezzo’s Eggplant Parmesan. Often hailed as a healthier alternative to a chicken parm, this specialty features fried eggplant served in a tomato sauce with fresh mozzarella, sauteed spinach, roasted red potatoes, and grana Padano (an Italian cheese similar to ParmigianoReggiano).

Best Wine Pairing:
The sauce on this dish can accommodate either a light red or a more flavorful chardonnay. Try a pinot noir if you fancy red and a Napa Valley chardonnay if you’re craving white.
Best Cocktail Pairing:
A whiskey-based cocktail like the Woodford Spire is fantastic for a dish featuring rabbit and beef, plus the lemon in this recipe compliments the butter sauce.

Best Wine Pairing:
Fruity whites such as pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc pair well with seafood and cream sauces, as does a prosecco, which is especially festive for a celebratory night out. A red wine low in tannins is another option, such as a pinot noir, cinsault, or grenache.

Rotini pasta is the cute spirals sometimes offered in a variety of colors and other times monochrome. At Garlic Brothers, the rotini is sauteed in a white wine cream sauce, accompanied by robust tomatoes, red onion, crimini mushrooms, and asparagus, plus shrimp.
Papapavlo’s
If you’re looking for something light, bursting with the flavors of a customary Italian dish, look no further than the namesake Papapavlo’s Pasta. This simple yet elegant plate features a housemade penne pasta tossed with butter, EVOO, garlic, and Parmesan cheese, creating a satisfying meal for any pasta lover.
Best Wine Pairing: A butter sauce may cause many to reach for a glass of white, but Andy Pappas at Papapavlo’s suggests grabbing a pinot noir that is complex, layered, and flavorful instead.
Best Cocktail Pairing:
Seasonally, Papapavlo’s whips up a Spiced Pear Martini that delights the senses and offers complex layers of spice and fruit that ramp up the flavors on the Papapavlo’s Pasta.
Spiced Pear Martini

Angelina’s Spaghetti House Lasagna
Lasagna is a classic dish, dating back to the Middle Ages, but it has been reinvented again and again as restaurant’s put their own touch on perfecting the decadent layers. “Our lasagna is made fresh daily with our meat sauce,” says Vanessa Holt of Angelina’s Spaghetti House. The recipe was created by Angelina herself with origins in Genova, Italy. At Angelina’s, it’s served with a side of garlic bread.
Vodka Press
This is a simple recipe easy to make at home. 1.5 oz. vodka 4 oz. soda water/tonic 4 oz. 7up Lime wedge
Pour one shot glass (1.5 oz.) of vodka into a collins glass filled with ice. Fill remainder with half 7up and half tonic or soda water. Garnish with a lime wedge.

FEBRUARY 2021 | SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM
Best Wine Pairing:
Vanessa suggests giving this dish a robust zinfandel, one that will stand up to the rich flavors of the lasagna.
Best Cocktail Pairing:
A strong, classic cocktail is the best match for this equally classic dish. Order up a Manhattan or Old Fashion to sip with dinner.
Best Wine Pairing: Try a crisp pinot grigio or a fruit-forward rosé to complement the dish’s white cream sauce.
Best Cocktail Pairing:
The key here is to choose something light and refreshing to combat the thick sauce. Angelina’s makes a Vodka Press that pairs nicely.

Best Wine Pairing:
This is a heavy dish, and it needs a robust wine that can hold its own against the strong pepper, heavy cream, and potato dumplings. Pete recommends an oaked chardonnay to compliment the dish’s cream or an Italian soave.
Pietro’s Trattoria Spaghetti Vongole
Spaghetti Vongole is a popular dish along the coastline of Italy, with different variations served from region to region and town to town. At its base, vongole is a seafood spaghetti made with clams. At Pietro’s, the served variation is typical of the Italian southern coast of Calabria. “Our version includes pancetta and Calabrian chili,” Owner Pete Murdoca says. Chili is used in large part because it is a staple of the Italian south centralized in the region of Calabria where the Murdoca family is from.

Pairing Wine with Pasta If you’re a novice at pairing wine and pasta, take these simple rules into consideration when serving. TOMATO-BASED PASTAS. Choose a medium-bodied red. In Lodi, we like a local Zinfandel to complement the acidity of the tomato. Or lean into the Italian roots and opt for a primitivo.
CHEESE PASTAS. A stuffed ravioli or four-cheese penne will work well with either a full-bodied white or a light-bodied red.
The pancetta and chili make a lighter pinot noir a good accompaniment, as opposed to the drier pinot grigio you may find with most seafood pastas.
Gnocchi Cotto “The Gnocchi cotto is our take on the traditional Italian pasta ‘panna,’” Pete explains. The word panna means cream in Italian, and while panna is not something generally found in restaurants in Italy, it is a staple in every Italian home. The Gnocchi Cotto at Pietro’s consists of a homemade potato gnocchi, cream, prosciutto cotto (an Italian version of cooked ham), and black pepper.
If you go vegetarian, reach for a light-bodied white wine such as a sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, or albariño.
SEAFOOD PASTAS. Again, a seafood pasta, especially one tossed in a cream sauce or olive oil, will pair best with a lighter white or a grenache blanc.
HERB PASTAS, or those with a green pesto sauce, are best suited for lighter whites. Vermentinos and herbaceous sauvignon blancs are both good choices.
RED PESTO.
Best Wine Pairing:
VEGETABLE-BASED PASTAS.
Less popular, a red pesto has a different flavor profile than a green pesto. Go for a medium-bodied red with this wine, perhaps a merlot or sangiovese to complement color and taste.
PASTAS WITH BEANS OR LENTILS. If you ever see beans or lentils listed as ingredients, feel free to match to those instead of some of the other elements. Chiantis from Tuscany are a good choice. And for white drinkers, an earthier white will stand up just fine.
MUSHROOM PASTAS. Regardless of the sauce, mushroom-based pastas or pastas with a heavy dose of mushrooms (mushroom ravioli for example) are good for red drinkers. The umami flavors are complemented well by a merlot or pinot noir.
CREAM-BASED PASTAS. Sicilian whites and chardonnays best balance creamy sauces found in fettucine alfredo or carbonara pastas.
SPICY OR PEPPER-HEAVY PASTAS. This is another dish that will complement a local zin well, but we also recommend trying Italian wines such as a Sicilian red or primitivo.
CRAB & LOBSTER PASTAS. The heavier, buttery shellfish needs something a bit bigger. Fullbodied chardonnays and butter chardonnays are good choices. For an exclusively Italian varietal, reach for a soave, a dry Italian white from northeast Italy.
PEPPER PASTA. The most famous peppery pasta we know is the Cacio e Pepe, which literally translates to cheese and pepper. An acidic rosé pairs best with the strong pepper.

A GENUINE DIFFERENCE RAPHAEL HARDWOOD FLOORING SPECIALIZES IN AUTHENTIC WOOD FLOORS

D RAPHAEL HARDWOOD FLOORING
Laminate, wood-look vinyl planks, engineered hardwood—these are all popular go-tos for San Joaquin County homeowners. And Raphael Hardwood Flooring does offer them all. However, if you ask Joshua Raphael what his company’s niche is, he’ll tell you it’s the authentic stuff. Hardwood floors—from installation of new floors to restoring older floors—is the basis of the company’s motto, a nod to both the real products and the service offered: “Our Difference is Genuine,” he says. “In an age where everything is plastic, synthetic, and online, people crave authenticity,” Joshua says. Instead of looking for something that is aesthetically perfect, and therefore also manufactured, they’ll accept small imperfections because it evokes realness. “Give me genuine or nothing at all,” Joshua says. Joshua has built his company by being a one-stop shop for all your flooring needs. The Lodi showroom offers a wide array of colors and materials to choose from, to create the ideal look for homes and commercial spaces. Depending on individual style and budget, there are many different routes to go. There is nothing wrong with stone, composite, and waterproof floors. Many people like this look and find it’s a better fit for their budget. That being said, Joshua says Raphael

“We always recommend LED landscaping lights. They are brighter and run 90 percent less on your PG&E,” --Kyle May, K&T Lights
Shine a Light on Your Yard K&T LIGHTS ILLUMINATES THE BIG BENEFITS OF LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BY NORA HESTON TARTE
There are a lot of ways to bring light into your yard. In the winter months, when daylight savings brings sundown before dinner, there are even more benefits to adding lights to outdoor spaces. In the backyard, these lights are often used for entertaining purposes, but front yard lights have benefits, too. Instead of letting early evenings cause you to turn in while the weather is still nice, outdoor lighting keeps your outdoor space inviting later into the night. Stay out and visit with neighbors, enjoy a glass of wine with your spouse on the front porch, or let the kids play outside a bit longer. Read on to learn the other reasons K&T Lights Owner Kyle May recommends landscape lighting to customers.

SAFETY. A lit-up front yard deters burglars, it’s the facts. “Studies show that a well-lit house is less likely to have a burglar attempt to come to your property,” Kyle says. But safety doesn’t stop at potential crime. A dark yard is also more hazardous to maneuver. For example, if you’re coming home late, lighted steps and walkways mean you’re less likely to trip over unseen hazards or your own landscaping. AESTHETICS. Something about light fixtures in a front yard just make a home shine brighter—pun intended. “Proper installed landscaping lights can significantly enhance the beauty of your property,” Kyle says. always recommend LED landscaping lights. They are brighter and run 90 percent less on your PG&E,” Kyle says. Keep in mind the age-old adage “you get what you pay for.” According to Kyle, the biggest misconception he sees are customers attempting to DIY a landscaping package from a big box store, but it’s just not going to come out the same as a professional’s work. HOME VALUE. The two reasons listed above are also the two reasons that outdoor lighting can add to the value of your home. Homeowners value curb appeal and safety, especially when moving into a new neighborhood where you may be uncertain. When you increase both of these, you also increase the potential monetary value of your home.

escape WHERE TO PLAY: A focus on learning new skills together is one way to bond while in Breck. Start off your weekend with a Culinary Adventure Class offered at Colorado Mountain College, which has a Breckenridge campus. Couples will enjoy an evening of tasting enchanting culinary dishes such as Alsatian Onion Tart, Sausage with Sauerkraut and Potatoes, Pork Stew with Juniper Berries, Traditional Fleischschnacka (a handmade pasta rolled with ground beef), and a fresh fruit tart. The class includes cooking demonstrations so you can learn how to master these fancy foods yourself, as well as take home recipes. 107 Denison Placer Rd. Even for those who do not ski, there are ways to enjoy the snowy landscape. A magical one-hour sleighride through the woods complete with hot cocoa and homemade cookies, snuggled close under a blanket, is one way to spend an evening with Two Below Zero (616 Recreation Way) or Golden Horseshoe Tours, the latter of which boasts a cherry-red sleigh pulled by Belgian draft horse through the

White River National Forest. 6061 Tiger Rd. If you’re looking for that experience you can’t get just anywhere, consider a Snow Cat Tour instead. These scenic, guided tours load guests into a heated, state-of-theart Prinoth Snowcat after a quick drink at the starting point. Along the way you’ll hear tales of old mining families, catch glimpses of the local wildlife, and learn more about the secluded forests surrounding Breckenridge’s lively downtown. Halfway through the tour, you’ll stop for hot cocoa and 'smores at a little cabin in the woods. And while this is a great way to spend your time on a couple’s vacay in Breckenridge, it’s also a fun family activity. Book through Breckenridge Nordic Center. 9 Grandview Dr. Exploring downtown Breckenridge is a must while in town, and it just so happens that exploration is another way to increase feelings of closeness with a partner. getting up to the mountain is fun—think the big gondolas at Heavenly Village. Simply hop on at the base of the mountain and ride it to the top. There are a few places to get off, signaling different slopes for varied skill levels, but the very top is where you’ll find the lodge and other amenities of Breckenridge Ski Resort. Check in and pick a chairlift. In addition to skiing and boarding, the full-service recreational facility has onsite restaurants, a quaint breakfast and cocktails spot, and lodging. On the grounds there is an ice skating rink (with available rentals) as well as outdoor games such as cornhole and life-size chess, making it easy to spend a full day—or a full weekend—at 10,000 feet. 1599 Ski Hill Rd.
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK: If you’re after ambiance, look no further than The Canteen Taphouse & Tavern. When I think of grabbing a bite in between slopes or after a long day on skis, Canteen is the place I imagine. Settled into a wooden lodge, the large menu has a little of everything from shared plated such as smoked salmon dip and loaded fries (overflowing with bacon, cheese, scallions, and sour cream) to flat bread pizzas, sandwiches, and even entrees including grilled salmon and mahi tacos. The real draw here is the beverages though. Signature cocktails are served in metal canteens, and they are delicious. If you’re really feeling festive, ask the

That’s how we landed in Breckenridge Cheese & Chocolate, a two-story outpost that offers wine flights (as well as wines by the glass) and cheeses and chocolates to pair with them (304 S. Main St.). Here, the wine quality rivals the ambiance. Ultimately, it’s exactly what you would expect to find in a mountain town like this one, all charming staff and good conversation tucked along a side street. And if you want to say you’ve visited the world’s highest altitude winery, well that also sits in Breckenridge (with a second location in Fairplay). Continental Divide Winery crafts its wines in Fairplay, CO, at over 10,000 feet in the sky, and it all makes sense because these wines are heaven sent. 505 S. available in select states, and while it’s not a Colorado staple, it’s still worth a stop, especially if you’ve never stepped into a Which Which before. The ordering process is simple. Grab a paper bag from the wall and mark off all the ingredients you want, whether that includes three sauces and two meats or four different kinds of cheese and a menagerie of vegetables. Hand the marked-up bag over to the counter server and wait for your one-of-a-kind sandwich to be served! 984 10 Mile Dr., Frisco
WHERE TO STAY: There is something magical about staying in a large, rustic resort set against a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. The Ranahan (a Welk Resorts property) opened in 2018 to high praise. Just a beat off the main stretch, it offers a quiet luxury—and plenty of amenities and travel options—to make a stay here worth the couple extra miles. Appointed rooms feature large balconies, over-sized showers, and deep soaking tubs big enough for two. Plus, on-site there are hot tubs as well as a heated pool with an indoor-outdoor entryway and a waterslide. Slip downstairs to the Blue River Lobby Bar & Lounge for morning coffee and pastries before you hit the slopes, and don’t forget to pick up a calendar of property-hosted events for couple-centric activities like a chocolate making class or guided snowshoe tour. 557 Stan Miller Dr.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK In times of COVID-19, nothing is promised. We highly recommend calling ahead to any business before traveling to ensure current policies and protocols. As of press time, Breckenridge Ski Resort and The Ranahan were both open to guests, but dining restrictions were in limbo.

GETTING AROUND One of the best perks of a weekend in Breckenridge is the ability to skip a rental car. Shuttle services make it easy to get just about anywhere in town. At The Ranahan, the on-site driver will take you to the mountain and pick you up with just a quick call, and he’ll even be your designated driver for dinner—just make sure you ask what time he stops ride service in case you’ll need to catch an Uber back. Other businesses around town give into shuttle service, too, meaning you’re likely to see it advertised everywhere from the mountain to breweries. Getting into Breckenridge is also hassle-free. Summit Express offers rides directly from the airport to the town of Breckenridge, dropping you right at your hotel door. Keep in mind you’ll likely be flying to Denver for the vacation and Breckenridge is a roughly 90-minute trek away southwest. SummitExpress.com

FOR THE LOVE OF PIZZA SPEND VALENTINE’S DAY IN BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD
Valentine’s Day may conjure up visions of high-end meals in fancy establishments, elbow to elbow (or, you know, still six feet apart) with other diners making the most of the holiday with someone they love, or at least like a little bit. There is, however, another alternative to the formal night out: ordering in. Date nights spent at home can be just as special, regardless of the day of the year. Here, it’s cozy, there’s no waitlist, and pajamas are acceptable attire. “Pizza on Valentine's Day is a healthier option than going SJMAG.COM

A DIFFERENT KIND OF DATE NIGHT
out for Surf and Turf and it is much easier on your wallet,” says David Calder, of David’s Pizza in Stockton. And the eatery really gets into the holiday spirit with its festive heartshaped creations you can surprise your honey with. If you’ve chosen delivery pizza for your big meal, pair it with a wine to really impress. David’s has brick oven-baked, New York-style pies (and a gluten-free crust option), and we’ve got the suggestions for how to balance the spicy flavors of pepperoni or accent the creamy texture of an alfredo sauce, all with the right vino. The best specialty pizza on the menu, if you ask David, is the David’s Combo. It’s not the first time we’ve talked about this pie, which is #1 on the menu and in our hearts, made with pepperoni, salami, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, bell peppers, red onions, linguica, and sausage. Pair it with: Chardonnay, but not an oaky one. A light citrus sipper will complement the vegetables on this pizza without competing with the complex flavors. If you’re more of a red drinker, opt for a Syrah or Pinotage, which will balance the spice in the pizza’s meatier toppings.
62
The Garlic Veggie Gourmet is a close second to his namesake combo, according to David. This pizza bucks the traditional red sauce for a creamy garlic sauce, and is then finished with feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes, zucchini, spinach, mushrooms, green onions, red onions, and artichoke hearts. Pair it with: Chardonnay or pinot noir. The goal with a cream sauce it to match the texture with a creamy wine. As a chardonnay, this is going to be a more full-bodied wine with influence of oak. Fancy yourself a carnivore? The All Meat pie is for you, boasting six different kinds, sure to hit the spot. That includes pepperoni, salami, Canadian bacon, linguica, ground beef, and sausage. Pair it with: Cabernet sauvignon. All of those big meaty flavors need a big bold wine that can stand up to it without becoming overwhelmed by the food. A cabernet is a good go-to but the Spanish tempranillo or a heavy Argentinian malbec will also do the trick. A personal favorite of David’s, the Taste of Gilroy, sounds simple enough, made with pepperoni,

garlic, and fresh tomatoes—the name is a nod to the local town of Gilroy known for its garlic production and big events like an annual garlic festival. Pair it with: A dry sparkling wine. When it comes to garlic, acidity is needed to achieve balance. Other whites will work, too, such as a sauvignon blanc or vermentino. If you want a red, try a GSM. The menu’s Chicken Gourmet also ditches the custom red sauce found on pizzas for something different. In this case, it’s pesto. The pie boasts a sun dried tomato and pesto sauce, spinach, chicken, mushrooms, red onions, green onions, garlic, and fresh tomatoes. Pair it with: Pinot grigio. The key is to focus on the sauce. In this case the green basil and vegetable flavors will be best suited with a crisp, acidic white to bring out the light, herbal tastes. Another suitable white is albariño, a popular varietal in Lodi. For red-only drinkers, substitute with a fruitier malbec.
Another way to make date night— or family night—special is to craft your own pizzas. David’s Pizza offers “survival kits,” packed with all of the ingredients needed to make pizza at home. $9.99 gets you a medium piece of house dough, sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Keep it in the fridge for up to three days, or store in the freezer for a few weeks.

West Oak Nosh is mixing up its own version, made with refreshing flavors of rosemary and lemon, without straying too far from the original sipper.
