PASSING THE TORCH BY SCOTT G. BEATTIE, JD, LLM

SCOTT BEATTIE

Business statisticians tell us that only about 25% of family businesses are successfully transferred to the next generation. Less than 10% make it to the third generation. The old adage “if you fail to plan then you plan to fail” is especially true for business succession, especially in tough economic times. Transferring a business between generations requires knowledge, effort and a strong desire to succeed among participants. A succession plan is the part of your business plan which focuses on long term events such as changes which occur at the retirement, incapacity, or death of an owner or key employee, or on the entry of a son or daughter into the business. Here is a short list of questions designed to focus you on key issues. You may find that answering them or even struggling to answer gets you moving in the right direction. • What are your long term goals for your business? Do family members have similar goals? • What would likely happen if the business was faced with your sudden retirement or death? • Who is qualified among family or key employees to run the company? Will they have the incentive to stay around? Will they have the authority to manage under your legal documents? • How motivated are family members? Are they qualified (what skills or weaknesses do they have)?

20

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

• What education/training is needed to groom your successor to run the show or play a supporting part? Which key employees need to be part of the game plan? Should any family members be kept out? • Should non-participating family members be given an ownership interest? Will ownership rights allow them to force a sibling to sell? • If any family members are not involved, how should you handle this in your estate plan? Do you have sufficient nonbusiness assets to “equalize” your estate among children? If not, how can you fund the plan of distribution to non-participating heirs (e.g., insurance, intra-family loans, purchase options)? What is fair? • If more than one child will be involved, do they work well together? Do their styles compliment one another or conflict? • Must the business be a single enterprise or can it be divided into multiple businesses or divisions? Tax ramifications? • What have you done or can you do to ease the concerns of key employees so they don’t leave at critical transition points? Incentives? • Do you want (or need) to retain income from the business after your retirement? Would it be better for tax purposes to shift some or all of the business income to younger generation family members?

From the legal side, the implementation of a succession plan goes well beyond the creation of a Will or a Living Trust. It can include the choice of business entity (e.g., Corporation, Partnership or LLC) and the design of the capital structure (e.g., common and preferred stock, voting and nonvoting rights, debt v. equity funding). Other agreements such as buy-sell agreements and option agreements of various sorts are often necessary to focus on the control and ownership structure. Succession planning can be critically important if you don’t want to leave your business to fate. If family members do not intend to take over the business, then having a succession plan can help ensure that you and your family at least obtain the best value for the business by having it ready to sell at your retirement or death. The yardstick to measure your success will depend upon your goals. If your goal is to have your family continue the business but it must be sold to pay taxes or to equalize the estate distribution for your other children, then your succession plan has failed. Save taxes, preserve wealth, secure your family's future.

editor's note 13 YEARS OF CHANGES

Celebrating Our 100th Issue

I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions… probably because I’m the

last guy who would ever stick to one. It’s not that I don’t strive to improve myself with each passing year—I think we all try to do that to some extent. (In fact, we give you 22 local ways to do just that in this issue!) It’s more the all or nothing principle behind these annual pressure-filled promises to be perfect that I can’t seem to get on board with. If you miss one day at the gym or let yourself have even the tiniest slice of your kid’s birthday cake, it’s as if you’ve officially fallen from grace and been cast into the darkness and shame with all of the other resolution breakers. To me, change of any kind should come as most things do – in due time and with moderation.

So this year, don’t try to be perfect because we all mistakes. Instead, focus on

becoming better—a better parent, a better spouse, a better boss, a better person. In that pursuit, don’t forget to keep having fun and enjoying life. Take the family on a trip or do something nice for yourself (like booking a destination relaxation getaway at one of our featured spas). Whatever you choose to do, stay positive and always remember that each new day brings another opportunity to start fresh.

I will leave you with a passage from award-winning author Neil Gaiman that sums

up my hope for all of us this year:

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are

making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something. “

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New

Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever. Happy New Year!

ROBBY’S STORY MARCH OF DIMES AMBASSADOR FAMILY

PICTURED: ARRIGONE FAMILY

Bobby and Kristal Arrigone found out they were expecting their first child on their one- year wedding anniversary. “I had the picture perfect pregnancy,” Kristal says. At 16 weeks, the couple found out they were having a boy, and Kristal’s 20-week ultrasound went by without a hitch. Around week 23, however, she started having mild backaches and some pressure, but chalked it up to normal pregnancy issues.

upfront 209    On June 26, 2011 at 24 weeks along, Kristal woke up with spotting and called the doctor right away, who told the couple to head to Dameron Hospital. “The OB [obstetrics nurse] on duty examined me,” she remembers, “then looked at my husband and I and said these dreaded words, ‘We are in trouble’. The doctor told me I was in full labor, I was dilated to a four and the amniotic sac was bulging. He said I would remain in the hospital until I delivered.”    For 10 days, Kristal lay completely flat and highly medicated, trying to keep her son in utero. But on July 6, after a routine exam, she heard the same devastating phrase, ‘We are in trouble’. “Next thing I knew, five nurses and anesthesiologists rushed to my bedside and prepped me for surgery,” Kristal shares. “At 3:17 p.m. my tiny, beautiful son was born at just 26 weeks, weighing 2 lbs. even. My husband Bob and I named him Robert Frank – Robert after my husband and Frank after his great uncle. Our NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] journey began at that moment.”

TRENDS | PEOPLE | CULTURE | STYLE

Kristal had heard of the March of Dimes a few times in the past, but it wasn’t until after Robby was born that she understood exactly what they do. According to Kristal, “One of our nurses gave me literature on prematurity, and in the pamphlet it mentioned the MOD. I decided to do a little research and found that the MOD funded the research for the surfactant treatment that Robby received at birth. I also found some online support and videos available to help mothers like myself cope with the different ailments and diagnoses of our babies.” When Robby was 13 weeks old, an ophthalmologist found he had advanced to Stage 3 Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), which occurs when the blood vessels around the retinas swell or harden. Robby was transferred to UCSF Medical Center for emergency laser surgery to prevent retinal detachment. The family later learned that ROP research and treatment was also funded by MOD. After 15 weeks in the hospital, the Arrigones finally got to bring their “little miracle” home. Robby is now a happy, healthy 2-year-old.

PHOTO: FRITZ CHIN PHOTOGRAPHY INC.

In May 2012, the family walked in the March for Babies along with 25 of their closest family and friends. Their Dameron NICU support group raised over $4,000 for the event. And in May 2013, the Arrigones were approached to be the Ambassador Family for the March of Dimes Signature Chef event. “We felt so honored to be able to share our story and help raise some awareness for premature babies,” Kristal shares. The event was held on October 10, 2013 at the Stockton Arena. More than 20 chefs and restaurants from around the

Central Valley were on hand to prepare their signature dishes and be auctioned off for private events. She concludes, “Bobby, Robby and I are so grateful for all of the doctors and nurses at Dameron Hospital… We are also thankful for the March of Dimes for making it their mission that every baby is born healthy and on time.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:

NOT JUST A LUXURY: HIS-AND-HERS MASSAGE PROMOTES RECOUPLING BY HEATHER REAGAN

It’s no secret that a massage offers an abundance of health benefits, but when a couple partakes in one together, it can work wonders on their relationship. Spas offer a variety of options that cater to couples, all of which foster relationship restorative benefits we have highlighted below

CALIBODY HANDMADE SQUARE SOAP BY KIMBERLY STREDNEY RELATIONSHIP RECONNECTION

When you are forced to relax in the same space with your partner, an amazing thing happens…you let go. You let go of busy schedules, job stress, and all of life’s bulky burdens. In letting go, you co-exist in the moment together engaged, uninhibited and connected. SURGE OF AFFECTION

Massage stimulates the release of many feelgood hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, which enhance feelings of intimacy and affection. During a massage, your muscles relax, which naturally results in a relaxed state of mind. And when couples are relaxed in both body and mind, they become more sensuous. Luxe amenities such as duet suites, fireplaces, soaking tubs, Swiss showers, and irresistible treats like strawberries and champagne can indubitably heighten sensuality and affection.

36

A COMMUNICATION BOOST

A couples massage is an exercise in solidarity. The experience of de-robing together while licensed specialists apply touch therapy to your body is a vulnerable venture that leaves both partners feeling immodest and unreserved, thus inspiring them to speak openly and honestly with each other both during the massage and afterward. Many spas offer dreamy dual massages under the stars, beachside or in the privacy of a suite to foster an experience that encourages the unity of couples.

PERFECT PEAR BY MICHELE BIRD

Fashion, trendy, and affordable are just a few words that come to mind when you think of The Perfect Pear. Located in Lodi, the shop has been open since March 2011 by owners Brenda and Chuck Vecchiarelli in collaboration with Julie Wooldridge of Julie Nicole Photography. 42

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

Starting out with online retailing in 2002, the business soon expanded to have a storefront at Lodi’s Lakewood Mall and later moving to the downtown area. “We were looking for the perfect location and needed enough square footage,” said Brenda Vecchiarelli. “We’re starting to develop a thriving downtown with wine tasting rooms and there has been a lot of support from local people.”    The Perfect Pear is geared for women of all ages, which makes it an ideal shopping destination for mothers and daughters. A variety of purses, jewelry, candles, sunglasses and other accessories are carried in-store. Some of the brands include Fresh and Chic, the Chamilia Collection, Lollia, and Big Buddha. Vecchiarelli describes the accessories as “on trend, fashion forward and fun.” Maintaining reasonable prices is another key aspect of The Perfect Pear. “It’s nice for women to get an accessory they can interchange throughout the year,” said Vecchiarelli. When the shop initially opened, the economy had been shaky and Vecchiarelli wanted to create a stress-free shopping environment for customers. “I want the shopping experience to be fun again,” she added. “I don’t want it to be a stress.”   Aside from the fabulous selection and great prices, customers can enjoy free gift-wrapping and personal shopping. Vecchiarelli encourages women to bring their outfits into the shop if they are looking for a specific color or jewelry design to accessorize the look. “It’s an adventure when you’re in there,” said Vecchiarelli. “It’s meant to be a very

fun experience with my prices being low.” Many may be surprised to find out that a photography studio is also located within the shop. Wooldridge and Vecchiarelli had been best friends and decided to merge their two businesses together, which also explains the story behind The Perfect Pear’s name. “It’s a play on words because we were best friends pairing together,” noted Vecchiarelli. “It really sticks with people.”    For those planning to shop at The Perfect Pear this winter, some of the hot items to check out include scarves, headwraps, and gloves. There’s nothing better than bundling up in something both chic and stylish! From photography to fashionable accessories, The Perfect Pear is a shop that has a little something for everyone. Next time you’re looking to accessorize without breaking the breaking, you won’t regret a visit to this Lodi boutique!

at local city animal shelters, while others are from commercial farms that were planning on killing them once they were no longer useful. “We will take them in or do adoptions,” Morrissey says. “We rescue ‘food’ animals most people don’t consider to be rescueable.” This summer, the organization celebrated a huge victory, saving 565 abused spent laying hens in the Central Valley. All were adopted or went to a rescue group.    Morrissey explains they work with rescue groups throughout California up into Washington and also take in animals from cockfighting busts and those abandoned by urban farmers. “Urban farming has become a problem,” she shares. “People want to be more connected to their food sources, and one way to engage this is to raise

upcoming Valentine’s Day event in February to sponsor an animal.    Morrissey admits while most of their support comes from people in the Bay Area, they are in a unique position In the Central Valley to educate and extend compassion in a region that is the hub of animal agriculture. Last year alone, Harvest Animal Home rescued more than 1,500 animals. They are always looking for volunteers to help them continue to their mission.

Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary will turn nine this Thanksgiving. The non-profit organization, founded in 2004 by Karen Courtemanche and Annemarie Engelhardt, rescues abused, abandoned or unwanted rabbits and farm animals. According to current director Christine Morrissey, Courtemanche was involved in rescuing rabbits and wanted to expand to a much larger facility to be able to save more animals. They now have a 2.5acre sanctuary that currently houses over 200 residents.    The animals – rabbits, chickens, turkeys, pigeons, ducks, two pigs, three guinea pigs, Grandma the guinea fowl and a dog named Dexter – each have their own harrowing story to tell. animals in their backyard. But they don’t realize the amount of work owning a farm animal is and the amount of space they need, so the animals end up unwanted or abandoned.” While the shelter cannot take in more animals as the need outweighs their capacity, they will do courtesy posts on their blog and network for owners who need to surrender their animals.    The organization is publicly funded and relies on donations from “good people” for ninety-nine percent of their funding through campaigns like their PIGs (Partners in Giving) Program, where you can choose an animal to sponsor with a monthly donation. They also hold fundraisers throughout the year like Toast to the Turkey, a humane Thanksgiving celebration featuring an auction, speaker and a vegan buffet. Don’t miss their

HISTORY OF SAN JOAQUIN

L O C A L H I S TO R Y

CUNNINGHAM’S CASTLE BY RACHAEL KANNER Information obtained at San Joaquin County Historical Society and the Bank of Stockton. Photos courtesy of the Bank of Stockton

In 1855, Thomas Cunningham made his way from Ireland to North America, eventually settling in Stockton. Cunningham was a significant historical figure in Stockton and all of San Joaquin County. He was a member of the Eureka Engine Company Number 2, eventually rising to chief of Stockton’s Fire Department. However, his role as County Sheriff (1871-1899) may be his best-known role. He excelled in this capacity so well that his name alone caused many criminals to completely avoid the county. Although he was tough on crime, he had firmly believed that every person – even criminals – deserved respect and should be 46

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

treated right. Over time, his name became synonymous with law and order, which is why the second county jail built in 1893 became known as Cunningham’s Castle.    Cunningham’s Castle was located on the corner of Channel and San Joaquin Streets and was an imposing fortress-like compound. It was originally designed to house 75 prisoners with ample space to house women separately as well as witnesses. The castle cells were often referred to as “tanks”, as they were completely enclosed apart from a little window in the door of the cell. It also had its own gas well, which was utilized for heating and lighting. In times of need, the jail’s basement was also used as an emergency hospital. At the time of completion, it cost $90,000 and was considered very modern with excellent security measures. Many considered Cunningham’s Castle to be one of the finest jails in the state.

Due to the high population increase in the early 1900s, the jail capacity was easily met and often surpassed. By the 40s, the castle’s average population totaled in the 400s, well above the 75-person capacity. By 1954, the castle had reached an unprecedented 518 prisoners. With Stockton’s population continuing to grow, and amidst complaints of inhumane treatment due to overpopulation, Cunningham’s Castle closed its doors in 1959 as new facilities were built in French Camp. By 1961, the impressive fortress-like structure was torn down.   Cunningham’s Castle served the population of San Joaquin County for just over 60 years. Although gone, it will never be forgotten--assured in 1972 when the Stockton City Council designated the site a Stockton Historical Landmark.

area that some felt "didn’t deserve it".   Two years later, however, Tony expanded the publication to include the surrounding cities and renamed the magazine Inside San Joaquin, which later became San Joaquin Magazine. By this point, the magazine was wider at 9 inches completely full color and gloss throughout. Tony designed his new labor of love to be competitive with lifestyle magazines in other larger cities throughout California. It brought the best of what San Joaquin had to offer every month, right into the homes of local residents.

I love the photos, they're great. I love the real life stories about people who live here.

Thirteen years ago, Tony Zoccoli lost almost everything. It was the height of the dot-com boom (or, as Tony calls it, “dotgone”), and like many, he invested everything he owned (including his house) in his print and internet company. And one day it was here, and gone the next, as if in a scene from a movie. Where a lesser man may have thrown in the towel, Tony, a family man with a 2 toddlers and a newborn son, saw an opportunity. With more than 15 years of creative design, deliving into web development as welll as sitting on the Tracy Chamber of Commerce board, he started witnessing the uphill battle the city was facing. A lot of the projects and growth that were expected had now fallen through. According to Tony, “There was really no idea where the city was going.” There was no real way for people to find out what was happening in their city either. At the time, there were only 2 local newspapers for local happenings and those were the only means to advertise in that reached people. Having been a graphic designer since age 17 with a ton of experience in print publishing, Tony thought, “I’m going to come up with a local guide where people can find out what’s going on all over the city.”    Just like that, Inside Tracy magazine was born. The quarterly newsprint color guide with a glossy front cover featured an events calendar, event details, inspirational stories and ads to help local businesses get their names out into the community. “For two years, I published the magazine with a bare bones staff – a sales rep, a writer and me – but we didn’t make money,” Tony says. He helped support his family with a graphic design business he kept open on the side and his wife, Valerie, ran a small retail store. While the residents of Tracy loved the magazine, critics couldn’t understand Tony’s full vision to create a full-size lifestyle publication in an

LASER ASSISTED CATARACT SURGERY ZEITER EYE FIRST TO EMBRACE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN CATARACT SURGERY BY MICHELE BIRD

Over the years eyesight begins to weaken and bright colors and crisp images begin to fade. This affects many of our life activities from reading, golfing and working to simply taking in the scenery around us. If your vision is clouded by cataract, you may be losing the ability to enjoy the things you value most – the people and places around you. Fortunately, cataract surgery can help you regain your vision and your quality of life. Thanks to huge medical advances, cataract surgery has advanced dramatically over the past decades. It is generally a simple, outpatient procedure with little discomfort, no stitches and no patch on the eye. Zeiter Eye Medical Group, 74

Inc. is the only local office to offer laser precision cataract surgery, the LenSx Femtosecond Laser. Zeiter Eye surgeons offer their patients custom cataract surgery options tailored for each individual. WHAT IS A CATARACT?

More than 50% of people over the age of 60, and many younger than that, suffer from cataracts. In fact, cataracts are so common that everyone will eventually develop one if they live long enough. A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens. Patients usually describe the condition as being similar to looking through a piece of wax paper, with a gradual blurring or distortion

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

of vision. Reading or driving at night may become more difficult, and cataract sufferers may also be troubled by a bothersome glare, haloes around lights, or even double vision. And, as the cataract becomes worse, frequent changes in eyeglass prescription may become necessary. CUSTOM CATARACT SURGERY

There are now advanced options for patients wishing to have less dependence on glasses and bifocals. Specifically, Custom Cataract Surgery addresses astigmatism and presbyopia, conditions that remain after Standard Cataract Surgery. Astigmatism is a condition where

the cornea (front surface of the eye) is not perfectly round (i.e. it is shaped more like a football than a baseball). In the past, we were unable to correct this “irregular” shaped eye with cataract surgery, resulting in patients remaining dependant on glasses. Now, with the use of the LenSx Femtosecond Laser and Toric IOLs, we can very precisely correct underlying astigmatism during cataract surgery, thereby reducing the patient’s dependence on glasses. Presbyopia is a condition that affects most people over the age of 40 and results in difficulty seeing up close without the aid of bifocals, trifocals or reading glasses. This age-related condition is believed to be caused

ZEITER EYE MEDICAL GROUP, INC. Board Certified Ophthalmologists

AreA’s 1st Provider of LAser Assisted CAtArACt surgery More Precise Procedure

by a hardening of the lens inside the eye, making it difficult for the eye’s muscles to change its focus. This condition cannot be improved with Standard Cataract Surgery because the monofocal standard IOL does not focus for close vision. However, by choosing Custom Cataract Surgery with a ReStor “multifocal” IOL, most patients will be able to see at distance, intermediate, and near without the aid of bifocals or reading glasses. LENSX CUSTOM CATARACT LASER

Until now, standard cataract procedures and custom cataract surgeries were performed manually, where the surgeon used a blade for all of the incisions and other portions of the procedure. A manual procedure allows for a margin of error that can affect outcomes. With the introduction of the first FDAapproved custom cataract laser, the LenSx Femtosecond Cataract Laser, surgeons at Zeiter Eye now have the ability to create incisions and reduce astigmatism without blades. The LenSx Laser is computer controlled and operates with unmatched precision, thus eliminating some of the variables that have complicated cataract surgery results in the past. Recent results show that the laser is more precise than manual techniques for portions of the cataract surgical WWW.SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

procedure. By being more accurate and precise, visual outcomes are more predictable. STANDARD CATARACT SURGERY

Standard IOLs used by Zeiter Eye Medical Group have UVA/UVB protection built into the lenses to continue protecting your retina after surgery. We perform the procedure for each eye on separate days, but often within one or two weeks of each other. The procedure usually takes only 5 to 10 minutes, and patients should be able to drive themselves to their appointment the next day. With Standard Cataract Surgery, the patient’s vision will be clearer, but they may need to wear glasses for reading and other activities. WHICH OF THESE PROCEDURES IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

It is likely that these Custom Cataract Surgery options could reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts. Every eye is different, and everyone has different visual needs. Your first step is to have a thorough eye examination to determine the health of your eyes. The doctors at Zeiter Eye Medical Group will assist you in determining which option is best suited for your eye condition and lifestyle.

Each custom cataract surgery offered at Zeiter Eye is tailored specifically to your eye alone, using ultra high resolution measurements that allow us to be in control of your visual outcome.

Gentler exPerience

Traditional cataract surgery is performed manually, using blades and forceps. The new LenSx system offers the precision of the laser and the comfort of blade free surgery.

More AccurAte outcoMe

This state of the art technology allows surgical precision that is not otherwise possible with human hands. With the bladeless cataract surgery offered at Zeiter Eye, we offer the best refractive result, bringing the joy of clear vision to our patients.

“When sight is restored with cataract surgery, there are not many things in life more gratifying than sharing in that celebration with our patients.” -John H. Zeiter, M.D.

This serene spa believes that true wellness comes from attending to your mind, body, and spirit on a daily basis, and the folks here are devoted to providing a serenity and relaxation oasis allowing their guests to discover and nurture their wellness journey. Kabuki provides a comprehensive array of services integrating many cultures and backgrounds through Eastern and Western massage. Whilst Eastern massage approach is from the energy point of view involving healing based on energy flow and balance, Western massage approach, in contrast, focuses on the physicality of the human body. Kabuki also offers other modalities of bodywork such as: Cranio-Sacral - alternative therapy focused on the concept of “primary respiration” in which therapy consists of light touches to a guest’s skull, face, spine and pelvis; Reflexology- a form of bodywork that focuses primarily on the feet; Floor Thai-commonly referred to as “lazy man’s yoga”, your therapist stretches you into assisted poses that are relaxing, therapeutic, and energizing; and Reiki- a technique frequently called “palm healing” or “hands-on-healing”, therapists believe that they are transferring universal energy (i.e., reiki) in the form of qi through the palms, which they believe allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium. Keeping in the great tradition of Japanese public baths, Kabuki Springs offers a communal bath designed to encourage harmony and relaxation. The Japanese bath is an important part of the Japanese way of life, and the ritual itself is also a kind of metaphor for healthy communication and good relationships. Kabuki facilities include a hot pool, cold plunge, dry sauna and steam room. Individual bathing areas include traditional Japanese-seated showers and standing westernstyle showers. Complimentary bath products, sea salts, chilled face cloths and teas are offered as well, along with a full-time bathing attendant. A Joie de vivre establishment, Kabuki Springs & Spa delivers an experience tantamount to the “joy of living”. > EDITOR’S PICK:

ONLY TAKE OFF WHAT YOU CHOOSE

For most body treatments and massages, it is appropriate to shed it all as you will be under a towel the entire duration of your procedure. If you aren’t comfortable in the buff, leave on your bikini bottoms. If you are lying down getting a massage, you will need to take off your bikini top to maximize the muscle relaxing experience. Keep it on if you are going to be standing up or moving around during your treatment.

TIP THE SAME AS YOU WOULD AT A BEAUTY SALON Typically, between 15-20 percent of the total treatment cost is appreciated.

TURN OFF YOUR RINGER AND LEAVE YOUR CELL PHONE IN YOUR LOCKER

You will have a much more relaxing, stressfree visit if you aren’t arguing with your kids over text messaging. If you must use it, step outside by the pool so you don’t disturb other guests who are trying to get their Zen on.

At once personable and professional, Drs. Moline and Yee aim to keep their practice on the cutting edge. As such, Tracy Optometry is currently the only optometry office in the San Joaquin area (and Sacramento) to have LipiView® and LipiFlow®, the only equipment available to diagnose and treat dry eye. Dry eye currently affects upwards of 50% of the American population. It is usually caused by improper blinking (correlations have been made to computer viewing habits), leading to dysfunctional oil glands and, ultimately, evaporation of tears. 90% of dry eye patients who have the LipiFlow procedure show marked improvement in symptoms and, if they keep blinking correctly, the results last for years. Left untreated, dry eye can cause permanent damage. So if you’re noticing dry eye symptoms--eye fatigue, fluctuations in vision or perpetual irritation--come to Tracy Optometry to have them checked out. SALIDA SURGERY CENTER

Children’s Dental Care While They Sleep 5712 Pirrone Road Salida, (209) 543-9299 www.SalidaSurgeryCenter.com CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? How old were you when you visited the dentist for the first time? Were you over a year old? Realistically, a child must have their first dental visit by their first birthday. But what most parent’s wonder is, “Why at such a young age?” “My child hardly has any teeth.” Well, statistics show that on average, 25% of children have cavities by the age of 4 and it can happen as early as age 2. Our goal is to prevent those cavities and avoid all the hardships that come along with them. When your child suffers from early childhood caries, many aspects of your family life can be affected. Cavities eventually cause pain, which can result in the child being absent from school, thus affecting his/her education. Although you may not realize it, your child may not only feel physical pain but his/ her self-esteem may be suffering as well. A child with decayed teeth may feel self-conscious about smiling in public or in front of classmates due to the fear of being made fun of. This affects the child’s ability to socialize normally and perform well in school. Not to mention, treating a child with severe dental caries can be extremely costly. With families and our state running out of money, how will these children get these caries taken care of? This is why it all comes down to establishing good oral health brushing habits and preventing those early childhood caries. There are many things that you as a parent can do to prevent early childhood caries. Establish an oral hygiene routine in your household. Children should learn to brush their teeth in the morning and floss and brush at night right before bedtime. Most cavities are formed at night when food or other bacteria is left in the mouth overnight giving it time to decay teeth. Starting a routine at a young age can also help your child maintain good oral health throughout his/ her life. Give your child the recommended dose of fluoride. Most pediatricians prescribe fluoride to their patients to help aid in the prevention of decay and also to strengthen developing teeth. A child’s diet can play an important role as well. Limit the consumption of juices, sodas, and snacks that contain high levels of sugar and carbohydrates. A well-balanced diet is beneficial not only to a child’s oral health but also for the child’s health in general. Most importantly, make sure that you schedule a routine visit with your child’s dentist every 6 months. Your child’s dentist can educate you on your child’s dental health and give you advise on your child’s dental needs. By taking these steps, you will not only establish a healthy routine but also help your child discover the benefits of going to the dentist.

PARENTS

KNOWING WHEN TO STEP IN

LET THEM TAKE THE LEAD

If possible, do the tasks alongside your parent rather than doing it for them. While this approach might take longer than doing it yourself, you allow your mom or dad to retain some self-esteem by letting her or him take the lead.

two

ASK WHAT THEY NEED HELP WITH

Let your parent tell you what aspects of a particular activity they need your help with, and if possible, try to limit your assistance to just those things, at least for now. Of course, if your parent doesn’t have a realistic picture of what they can do for themselves, you will need to gently find a way to help them see your perspective.

three

BE RESPECTFUL

four

SET UP INVISIBLE SAFETY NETS

Ask permission before you just jump in. For example, when you take your parent to a doctor’s appointment, don’t assume that they want you to come into the exam room with them. Instead, ask them if they’d like you to be there the whole time, or if you can be called in toward the end of the visit to make sure that YOUR questions are answered.

For example, if you come every Sunday and set up your mom or dad’s medications, you can have some expectation that she or he will take the correct medications at the right time. But it wouldn’t hurt to also have a way of checking that once or twice during the week with a visit from a trusted friend or relative, or through daily medication reminder phone calls from you.

five

ENSURE SAFETY

Make a distinction between safety and everything else. When your parent’s safety is on the line, you might just have to take charge by taking over. On the other hand, if you’d just prefer that something be done a certain way or at a certain time, there might be an opportunity to loosen the grip a bit

It’s something most of us will have to face in our lives—knowing what to do as our parents get older and begin to deteriorate in physical or mental health. There may eventually come a time when you need to decide whether assisted living is the best option, but until that day comes, what can you do to aid your aging loved ones with everyday tasks without taking away their sense of independence? 106

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

According to AgingCare.com, the hardest part for most seniors is actually coming to terms with the fact that they need help. This is because in doing so they are acknowledging their limitations and essentially accepting that life as they know it is coming to an end. The website gives the following tips for handling this delicate transition without taking over completely:

While these tips are great for assisting aging parents who may just be entering the next phase in their lives, it is important to look out for warning signs that could indicate it is time for more comprehensive supervision or assisted living. Aging parents often keep secrets from their children to avoid being a burden or entering a more dependent stage in life. According to AgingCare.com, the 10 most common secrets elderly parents keep are: falls, pain, dizziness, auto accidents or driving infractions, money shortages, frivolous purchasing, gambling, financial abuse, elder abuse by family members, neighbors or paid caregivers, and alcohol or drug abuse. If you notice any of these signs happening with your aging parents, it is time to have an open, honest conversation with them about your concerns.

LA STRADA 88 Clements, Calif. isn’t the first place you think of when discussing fine dining in Northern California. But new Italian restaurant, La Strada 88, is quickly creating a major buzz in this small town with an authentic menu, outstanding chefs and a little savvy social media marketing.    “I was in the service industry years ago and then became involved in land acquisition with my husband,” explains Jan Johnson, who opened the restaurant five months ago. “I have always had my eye on this building, and even as a patron I loved it.

than probably anywhere you have had the item before.” La Strada 88 is even drawing attention from foodies in the Bay Area, with guests coming as far as San Jose just for the dining experience. With a second native Italian chef, Lucia Rogers, working closely with Sienna the combination is truly special.    A popular specialty item is the fried green tomato caprice salad, paired with other traditional options like halibut and prime rib. Lamb chops, swordfish and eggplant parmesan are also popular dishes. The journey you will embark upon while navigating the La Strada 88 menu should include a mandatory stop in the dessert section. All desserts are handmade including the tiramisu, crème brulee and homemade biscotti. “I was never a tiramisu fan until I had Chef Sienna’s tiramisu, and it was love at first bite,” says Johnson. Another unique dessert option is the Nutella calzone made in the woodfired pizza oven. They also offer ‘semifredo,’ Chef Sienna’s own creation of

Out of the old building came this new venture, La Strada 88, an authentic Italian restaurant that already enjoys a large following and has sparked a great deal of community interest. “We took a poll and several names were picked by the community,” says Johnson. “La Strada, (meaning ‘the street’) on Highway 88 was the most popular. So, we decided on Ristorante La Strada 88.”    The restaurant boasts a unique ambiance with a scenic enclosed patio dining area including heaters and a wood-burning fireplace. They also have a huge banquet room for weddings and special parties. “We plan to have entertainment in the future as well as winemaker’s dinners,” says Johnson. “We like to support the local farmers and winemakers, and our wine list is quickly growing with many selections from various local winemakers.”    The chef and menu spearheaded the path to La Strada 88’s hot start. 118

Their Executive Chef, Atillio Sienna, formerly worked at a small restaurant in the area that served the best Italian food the Johnsons had ever experienced. “I always joked with [Chef Sienna] that if I ever buy my own place I was coming to get him to be part of our team,” Johnson recalls. “When we found out we bought the building I called [Chef Sienna] immediately and he was ready to go, and it has been a journey ever since.”    Although the pasta is hand-rolled and the housemade raviolis are handfilled, the Johnsons recognize the need for variety. “Due to demographics of the area we have to offer more than just pasta,” says Johnson. “Our menu steak, lobster, prime rib and other specialty dishes only served on the weekends, like osso buco.” “We have a large selection of seafood including cioppino, halibut, salmon and sole,” Johnson continues. “All of our seafood selections reflect Chef Sienna’s personal touch and style differently

a mixture of chocolate chips and the housemade biscotti (lady fingers and toasted almonds and walnuts), layered with housemade vanilla ice cream and finished with an Italian version of Nutella. By posting daily specials and limited menu items to their “in the know” Facebook fans, La Strada 88 has experienced a popularity surge ever since they opened their doors. Despite using the newest technological trends to gain visibility, the fundamentals for success at La Strada 88 still rely on the unique, personal menu. “It is an authentic experience that you cannot receive at commercial chain restaurants,” says Johnson. “We’re family-owned with authentic Italian chefs and a menu that you have to taste for yourself to believe that food can be this good.”

WINE PICKS

L OCAL L ODI

Lodi’s First Kosher Zinfandel THIS MONTH'S PICKS FROM THE LODI WINE AND VISITOR CENTER

Kosher Lodi-grown Zinfandel – why not?   The recently released 2011 Covenant Landsman Lodi Zinfandel ($40), crafted by winemaker/owner Jeff Morgan, is a genuinely rich, vivid, powerfully aromatic expression of Lodi Zinfandel: teeming with raspberry and blueberry fruit qualities that are not quite jammy, yet generous enough to coat the palate with sensations akin to eating drippy berries with soft, black lambskin gloves. Medium-full body – that is, not coming across as fat or ponderous – and nuanced by faintly gamey whiffs that are more like black, oily, dark roast coffee beans than red meat, laced with suggestions of cardamom and cinnamon. Mr. Morgan’s own take: “The Landsman Zinfandel has a very distinctive quality, going a little beyond the usual varietal character. There is an exuberance of fruit that is very ‘Lodi,’ plus smoky, earthy qualities that I find fascinating. I get an almost Middle Eastern shuk character: shuk, meaning the spice market quality – like the heavy, heady aromas of cardamom, cinnamon, cumin and other spices wafting in the air, like a giant spice rack.”   Elaborating further, Morgan tells us, “Landsman refers to being a member of a tribe with a similar heritage or belief system. The Landsman Zinfandel has its roots in Lodi Wine Country, and is very much an expression of that place, with its long tradition of grape growing. This fits right in with our Jewish philosophy and faith, 120

BY RANDY CAPAROSO Exclusive to San Joaquin Magazine

which is based on a sense of place, and very long traditions.” As a Zinfandel, Morgan adds, “the Landsman is robust yet perfectly round and delicious – almost like a Port, but completely dry, not sweet. It can overpower many dishes, but makes a wonderful match with cheese – especially complex, aged cheeses made from cow’s milk, and even fresh goat’s milk cheeses from California.”   As with all of the Covenant wines, the Landsman is fermented completely with indigenous yeast to achieve the additional layers and complexity wrought by slower natural fermentation. “There is such a thing as kosher yeast,” says Morgan, “but indigenous yeast makes that unnecessary. We don’t want to add acid or do anything unnecessary to our wines. We focus on the natural fruit by aging for only six months in strictly neutral French oak barrels.” Now for the 64 million dollar question: What makes the Landsman “kosher”? Explains Morgan, "What keeps a wine kosher is that it can only be handled by a Sabbath observing Jew. There are no actual kosher winemaking methods – no particular anything that makes a wine kosher."   Although Morgan became Bar Mitzvah (literally speaking, a “son of commandment”) in 2007, as a non-Sabbath observing Jew he is not allowed to physically handle his own wines during the winemaking process. “I’m not a Sabbath observing Jew because I’ll drive a car on Saturday, I’ll eat non-kosher food and drink non-kosher wine. In the cellar, though, I have an associate winemaker named Jonathan Hajdu, who supplies the Sabbath observant component that keeps my wines kosher. For instance, only Jonathan can press the on and off buttons of our destemmer. Only Jonathan can do the pump-overs or pull samples out of barrels. I control all aspects of winemaking, but the only things I can actually do are basically the cleanup jobs, like shoveling skins out of tanks and cleaning the floor.”    “For observant Jews,” adds Morgan, “it is a kosher wine; but for anyone who appreciates good wine, it is just great Zinfandel!”

Wine Tours & Tastings

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. If you’re looking to take a trip back in time, Berghold Vineyards and Winery should be your next destination. Joe and Kay Berghold have been growing grapes in the Lodi area since 1986, and decided to expand their family run business by opening a winery in May of 2005. Today, the vineyards take up a total of 85 acres. Ironically, the name Berghold can be translated to mean “vineyard worker”.   The winery and tasting room is uniquely furnished with antiques from the mid-1800s to 1900s that have been collected over the years. “It’s very warm and inviting,” says Julia Berghold, general manager of the winery. “The woodwork is rich-toned and the antiques have been restored.” Some of the features to look for are the stained glass windows, piano, chandeliers and armoires. “The furnishings are a story,” she adds. “Most people’s jaws hit the

floor because people don’t expect this in Lodi and ask why isn’t it in Napa or Sonoma?”   A variety of wines are offered including Merlot, Viognier, Syrah and more. According to Julia, one of the most popular wines is the Crankcase, which is a mix of four varietals. If you can’t get enough of the delicious vino selection, you can sign up to become a member of the wine club. Invitations to exclusive events, discounts, and a winery newsletter are just a handful of the perks members receive after joining.   Excellent customer service is another element that makes the winery stand out. Whether you’re looking for the story behind a certain antique or just some friendly conversation, the winery is a very family-oriented place. “Our approach to overall customer experience is that it’s not just wine tasting. We view wine tasting as entertainment,” notes Julia. “People are there to be entertained and have an experience.”   In addition to the tasting room, there is also a gift shop and picnic area on the property. The shop carries everything from home décor to women and men’s apparel. Many special events and private parties are also held at the winery. From wine club events to weddings, the property provides a perfect setting to make any event memorable.   Next time you’re in Lodi, drop by the tasting room for a glass of wine and a few good stories. There’s no doubt you’ll walk away with some memories you’ll cherish and a new go-to spot at Berghold Vineyards and Winery.

IN SEASON SWEET POTATOES

SWEET POTATOES BY STEPHANIE MCINTOSH

While sweet potatoes are traditionally reminiscent of the holiday season, the health benefits and savory flavors are reason enough to enjoy them other times of the year. Believed to have its origins in the tropical regions of Central and South America, this orange-fleshed root vegetable serves as an excellent source of potassium, iron, calcium, vitamins A, C and B6, beta-carotene, and fiber. Often mislabeled as ‘yams’, sweet potatoes may yield a similar taste, but they score higher in nutrient value. As a distant relative of white potatoes, the sweet potato provides more vitamins and fiber while 124

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

maintaining fewer calories and a lower glycemic index. The wealth of antioxidants can do wonders for your immune system during the prime time of flu season.    Besides offering an abundance of nutrients, sweet potatoes also lend themselves to savory recipes. While baking is often the go-to method for preparing sweet potatoes, there are certainly other tasty ways to enjoy them: mashed, steamed, sautéed, baked, grilled, pureed, etc. There are countless recipes for any meal of the day that will allow you to delight in the healthful and succulent flavors in the comfort of your own kitchen. The

peak season for the freshest pick of the crop is October through the late winter months. When buying sweet potatoes, keep in mind that the pale varieties are not as moist or sweet as those with darker skins. The ideal choice is one that is firm, injury-free, heavy in weight and small to medium in size. Sweet potatoes can last for several weeks with maximum freshness if stored in a cooler temperature, away from light. Refrigeration is not the best method for storing, as it will take away from the sweet taste and result in a tough core. Don’t miss this pick of the season the next time you are stocking up at the local grocery store.

Curried Carrot, Sweet Potato & Ginger Soup INGREDIENTS:

2 tsp. canola oil 1/2 cup chopped shallots 3 cups (1/2-inch) cubed peeled sweet potato 1 1/2 cups (1/4-inch) sliced peeled carrots 1 Tbsp. grated ginger 2 tsp. curry powder 3 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon salt DIRECTIONS:

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallots; sauté 3 minutes or until tender. Add potato, carrots, ginger, and curry; cook 2 minutes. Add broth; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 25 minutes or until vegetables are tender; stir in salt. Pour half of soup in a food processor; pulse until smooth. Repeat procedure with remaining soup. Serves 5.

Oven Roasted Sweet Potato Chips with Ranch Dip INGREDIENTS:

3/4 pound sweet potatoes 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 1/2 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground cumin Light ranch dressing DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 425°. Cut 3/4 pound sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices; set aside. Combine 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin. Add sweet potatoes; toss gently to coat. Cover a lightly oiled nonstick baking sheet with a single layer of potatoes; roast, turning once, until golden and tender, about 20 minutes. Serve with store-bought light ranch dressing. COOKING WITH HOME THYME BY MICHELE BIRD

Now that the holiday rush of cooking is over, why not start picking up some new skills and techniques to use in the New Year? Home Thyme is one Stockton spot where you can simultaneously purchase all of your musthave kitchen needs and collect a new recipe or two. Lynn Fochs opened the shop last October. By the following month, a variety of cooking classes and demonstrations were being held each weekend in-store. Some of the featured topics included pumpkin pie, clam chowder, seasonal veggies and holiday-themed baking. “The classes are fun and bring new techniques,” Fochs says. “I want to inspire people to cook and enjoy their time at home.” In the coming months, Fochs hopes to have classes focused on pizza, appetizers and a chocolate/caramel theme for Valentine’s Day. For those who are interested in attending future classes or demonstrations, drop by the store or check Home Thyme’s official Facebook page for additional information on fees and scheduling. FINAL THOUGHTS

Weekday ONLY Diet Resolutions BY KELLY POLLARD

138

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2014

My name is Kelly & I’m a serial diet dropout.   My weight fluctuates like an over-caffeinated pendulum and my ambition to reign that all in swerves just as drunkenly. You name the diet and I’ve probably tried it. My inspirations and following failures are what spurs the billion dollar dieting industry. My latest bumper car ride has found me against Weight Watchers. For me, the accountability of stepping on a scale in front of a virtual stranger scares me into tracking my foods and stepping onto an elliptical machine more often than usual.    I broke up with Weight Watchers on the eve of last summer. A lethal combination of emotional drama in my life mixed well with the decision that I valued my relationship with margaritas and nachos much more than zero-point soups and fat-free cheese. I continued to pay the monthly diet fees for membership all through the summer despite taking a five-month hiatus. Cancelling the membership meant I was a quitter, when really, the diet and I were just on a break. In September, I knew I needed to start up again but also knew I’d gained some of the weight I’d lost. So instead of doing the walk of shame to the scale, I insisted I’d lose the ten pounds I’d gained over the summer before I showed up at a meeting to lose the rest of it.

Hey, it made perfect sense to me. I didn’t want to admit my failure going off the sacred ‘plan’. I knew how the plan worked; unfortunately, I couldn’t work the plan. You can imagine how that went. I rekindled the diet romance right before the holidays, because what’s more depressing than tracking a full Thanksgiving meal along with bottomless glasses of wine? I’m happy to say I survived the demons of Halloween candy, Thanksgiving gluttony, and Christmas cookie, stress-induced binges. My goal through the whole season was to maintain what little I had lost in the last year and hold steady until January.   We all know what January means. Resolutions and resolve to live a better life. Along with being a serial dieter, I’m also guilty of over-planning resolutions and personal goals. I’m in love with making long lists of the many ways I will improve my life. In case anyone wondered, January 17th is officially “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day”. I’d counter that and say, for me, every Friday at 4 o’clock is “Table My Resolutions for the Weekend Day”. If I didn’t allow for indulgence, I risk that summertime all-or-nothing dieting mindset. The gym and the points counter will still be waiting for me when I wake up in a fog on Monday morning. I don’t necessarily like tracking the dips and chips and sips of wine, but I sure do love the way my jeans fit after committing to my health.    So what if I I’m not the perfect picture of dieting? I save the weekends for margaritas and nachos.
