Our office is making these visits even easier and more convenient with technology that repairs damaged teeth in one appointment. We are pleased to offer our patients CEREC restoration services—a superior method of creating precisely designed, color-matched and highly durable ceramic restorations. publisher's note
I Today we start a new chapter in our life, blessed with 365 blank pages, we decide what goes on each page, so fill them to make this the best chapter ever.

’ve been a part of the publishing world here in San Joaquin for almost 20 years… not to age myself…. Not as if I’m turning 50 soon! At the start of this labor of love, I wanted to give the community a good looking, good read that shines light on my hometown. Coming from a graphic design background, I had a visual in my head but hadn’t nailed down all the details, and smoothed the process and execution. Luckily, this company and myself have always been blessed with superstar employees. They are passionate in their craft, whether it is graphic design, journalism, or photography- and just as equally invested in this community and our publication. And as the numbers of our editions grew, our page count followed. I’ve made mistakes, learned lessons, and reaped the benefits of years of trial and error. As we continue to work out the kinks, we are focused on always improving. I always want to change, scrap, and make things better. As we move into the New Year I’ve decided to take a step back, attempt to turn off my wired for sound instincts, and make it a true-life, long-lasting resolution. So how do you stop and smell the roses? I don’t have the answer. If I did, I would have years ago. How do you stop talking about work when it’s the only subject inhabiting your brain? Does this constant need to improve actually inhibit me?
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
I have to laugh when I watch the Devil Wears Prada. How glamorous. Here at San Joaquin Magazine we are a team of less than ten producing multiple magazines a month with help from lots of coffee and dedication. No matter how many late nights, successes, pitch rejections, and failures, the San Joaquin Magazine team pours the heart and soul of their creative genius into each one of our publications. And in the end, it’s always worth it. If you ever feel as if you can’t catch up, get ahead, do enough- take a step back and a look around. See what you’ve built, what you’ve created, what you’ve birthed. You can hold it in your hands. It’s tangible, and you gave it your all. With a project constructed from all of those things, it is always enough. I humbly thank my hard working team, advertisers, partners, and readers for blessing me with another year of living out my dream.
Cheers to many more!

It’s not abnormal for Dr. Craig Vierra, University of the Pacific’s College of Biological Sciences Professor and Co-Chair, to be greeted by a jarred black widow spider placed outside his office door. While many screech, flee or panic at the sight of their signature red hourglass adorned abdomen, Dr. Vierra is infatuated by the complexity of the species.

TREE PUT A Little Art IN YOUR LIFE BY COPPER WILLIAMS
The Stockton Art League has called the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery on Miracle Mile home for nearly 15 years. It has been one of the ultimate destinations in the city to find both amateur and professional pieces alike. These works of art are modeled across walls, shelves, and pedestals throughout the antique building- readily awaiting someone’s appreciative gaze. The League’s humble roots began with a group of artists in the 1930s, gathering together each week to draw at Haggin Museum. That group flourished 36

throughout the years, producing a nonprofit that celebrated its 75th anniversary back in 2011. The League’s members meet on the Mile on the second Thursday of each month to discuss the gallery, enjoy scheduled guest speakers, and to watch professional artists and members alike demonstrate their craft. These meetings are open to all and free for anyone who’d like to take a glimpse at the artistic world the League has weaved. Beyond monthly meetings, the gallery is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, with special demonstrations and workshops throughout the month. New members are always welcome and nearly all works of art showcased at the galley are up for sale. Stop on by and soak in the plethora of masterpieces your fellow San Joaquinians have created! Once the presents have been unwrapped, the lights taken down, and the decorations packed neatly back into boxes, there is still one question begging San Joaquin residents: what do I do with the tree? Most residents have the luxury of simply dragging their clean Christmas trees to the curb for pickup. These recycling programs typically run for two to three weeks, starting the day after Christmas, and allow trees to be collected free of charge on your regularly scheduled trash day. If your tree has remains of tinsel, flocking or ornaments still attached, they may be refused, or at least not eligible for recycling. If this service isn’t available to you, you’re still in luck. Some local recycling centers will take clean Christmas trees free of charge, such as North County Recycling, which services San Joaquin County and collects trees during operating hours. Local Boy Scout chapters, including the Lodi Boy Scouts, offer free tree pick-up annually, although donations are accepted. For details on collection date (the fundraiser typically runs one day) contact your local chapter. More information is available on Scouting. org. Or you could get more creative with your leftovers. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and often broken down to be reused as mulch. If you have the means- and the know how- break the tree down yourself to use in your garden.

INCHES & CLEANSE With Bloom Wellness’ Herbal Body Wrap BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Our last fab find was a crash course on face contouring- this month we visit the topic again- reporting on the power of body wraps. Bloom Wellness Lounge in Stockton offers Herbal Contour Body Wraps that not only shed inches but also detoxify along the way, and have successfully done so for over 25 years. Body wraps are a hot topic today, with many different options including salt solutions and mineral or clay wraps. Though these options promote toxin and water release, their process actually dehydrates and ages skin, and many experience weight gain after consuming fluids. Bloom Wellness Loungue did their homework for you and chose to carry a wrap made of an herbal formulation that works both internally and externally. The system cleanses the body of toxins- that build as we age and are result of lifestyle choices like poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and heavy metals- by targeting tissue under the skin. The all-natural treatment allows you to target areas where you wish to lose inches or tighten, including the abdomen, hips, and thighs, or you can opt for a full body wrap! A series of three to six wraps is recommended, and experts at Bloom say the treatments should be five to seven days apart and teamed with a diet of fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, whole grains, and lots of water for optimum outcome. Finish your treatment with a visit to Bloom’s Infrared Sauna to burn up to 600 calories, further detoxification, and promote relaxation.

MORE than just a
CUP OF
TEA BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
What’s better than a cozy cup of tea on a cold, rainy winter day? Nothing. It soothes, warms, and boasts a host of immune support. And next time you’re sipping, you’ll feel even more fulfilled knowing all the goodness that’s steeping from the bag... Many studies support the wide range of health benefits tea offers. From reduced risk of stroke, dementia, heart disease, and blindness, to increased focus, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, Harvard Health Publications report
STEEP YOUR TEA LIKE A PRO DO: Drink two to three cups a day. Use cold,
that drinking tea regularly seems to be associated with better health. In fact, tea consumption can even promote weight loss! Health benefits come from chemicals called polyphenols (catechins and epicatechins) that are enriched in tea and boosted through its fermentation process. Both chemicals are antioxidants; catechins found in green and white teas boost metabolism while polyphenols are thought to strengthen bones, improve mood, protect against breast, prostate, lung, and skin cancer, and help regulate blood sugar (glucose). However, some options have become less heartwarming with the use of pesticides, genetically modified organisms, and epichlorohydrin- a plastic that prevents breakage of tea bags but can be released into your drink and increase cancer risks and stomach problems. So, don’t just go buying any brand. Organic Tazo, Traditional Medicinals, and Yogi brand teas, commonly found in groceries throughout San Joaquin are free of harmful chemicals and GMO’s!
fresh water for boiling. Pour hot water over the tea directly into the cup. Cover the teacup with something (like a small plate) while it steeps. Steep your tea for three to five minutes. Add lemon or honey for added health benefits. DON’T: Put the tea bag in an already filled cup of water. Squeeze the tea bag after steeping is done. Let the drink cool down. Steep for more than 10 minutes or your tea will be bitter.

T.J. Wallace UOP’s Contender on the Court BY COPPER WILLIAMS
T.J. Wallace is an extraordinary student on a fullride scholarship at University of the Pacific. He plays Combo Guard for the Tigers, Pacific’s basketball team, and has received numerous honors for his skills on the court. 1. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE SPORT? I have three sisters, and my sister Tanicia played basketball. I wanted to be around her and I followed in her footsteps. When she stopped playing I took it upon myself to continue gaining knowledge of basketball. 2. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO REALIZE THAT BASKETBALL WAS SOMETHING YOU WERE REALLY ATTACHED TO? I played basketball for fun, I didn’t know the advantages of it until seventh or eighth grade. In my sophomore year of high school I started playing more seriously. I loved football more than basketball, but I opted to stop playing football. During that year, I developed a love for it. I wanted to work at it as much as I could.
FILL In The BLANKS
3. WHAT WAS IT THAT STOOD OUT FOR YOU WHEN IT CAME TO THE UOP TIGERS? Initially, during the recruitment process, it wasn’t until my junior year that I started looking into the program. I value education. You need a plan B to fall back on. As a lasting foundation, education is something you fall back on. At UOP, I’ll receive the education I need for when I stop playing basketball. Also, it was very close to home.
46
WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION, IT’S... something really important to me. My major [business] is something I enjoy studying. When it comes to studying, I’m fine sitting down and doing it. It’s something I enjoy. It’s not necessarily a hassle. MY ADVICE TO THE COMMUNITY IS... follow your dreams. Without a doubt, follow your dreams and follow your heart.
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
4. HAS YOUR FAMILY BEEN A DRIVING ROLE IN YOUR PASSION? My family has always been very supportive. They aren’t heavily into sports. My father is a mechanic. My sisters were cheerleaders. They were all more like, “We’re going to support you the best we can.” MY MOTTO IS... if you’re going to do something, do it with your full heart and not half. Always do everything fullhearted. MY KEY MOTIVATION IS... to be the best version of myself. On the court, I expect myself to achieve at a high level.
5. HAS PLAYING BASKETBALL HELPED YOU IN YOUR CHOSEN MAJOR? It’s helped me in networking and knowing how to communicate with people. In basketball, I’ve met so many people. You’re able to develop these relationships with them and network. You’re able to communicate on a personal level and come up with interesting ideas as a whole. So being able to communicate is something I’ve been able to translate into my major. Also, playing basketball requires a lot of hard work and work ethic is something I can apply to the business world. Basketball basically taught me to work hard in everything I pursue.

Forward: Two Hats, One Big Heart BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Armenia Pereira has some pretty big shoes to fill as both the Director and Case Manager of the McHenry House Tracy Family Shelter. Her dual positions require her to be financially savvy, with the strength to help each and every person that passes through the shelter doors. With an average of 65 families per year staying with the shelter and more requesting assistance, there could be no better person fit for such arduous roles. Originally from the Azores, Armenia moved to Massachusetts with her parents in 1979 and then to California with her husband in 1987. After tackling school and introducing their second child into the world, Armenia began looking around the Tracy region ARMENIA PEREIRA for work as a case manager. “When I applied for the job, I knew there was a shelter in Tracy, but I didn’t know a lot about it,” Armenia recalls. “I was impressed by how the place was run.” After applying in 1999, the shelter snapped Armenia up and never let her go. She’s been their case manager ever since, and as case manager “I’m making sure [each] family succeeds. That they’ll be saving 90% of their income. I make sure the kids are enrolled in school, that the family receives counseling. All the necessary things they’ll need to succeed.” But in 2011, the McHenry House had its own needs to fill in order to 50
|
succeed. “We had to cut one job so that we could provide the same quality of service to families in need,” Armenia explains. A quality that families have grown to trust. Armenia tried the Director’s title on for size and all the responsibilities that came with it. “As Director, I work towards the financial stability of the shelter, grants and oversee the staff. I am making sure everything is going smoothly.” It can be a little difficult, providing so much support in two very important roles, but Armenia tackles it with a devotion she’s built up for years. “I wear both hats every day!” Chuckles bubble up from Armenia at the thought. “My mornings are kind of chaotic. Especially if [we] have a family moving in. And I have the Director’s tasks to do daily. But we keep going.” The Director and Case Manager of the McHenry House has high hopes for her shelter. With so many families calling in daily, she’s dreamed of expanding the non-profit to provide more assistance. And fundraisers like Kids in a Box, an annual event which brings children together to camp out in their own decorated box to raise funds for the shelter, help tremendously in making that dream a reality. In the meantime, Armenia works diligently to help her families learn the skills they’ll need to flourish once they leave their temporary home.

Healthy teeth... long happy life
Leading researchers have long touted the benefits of well cared for healthy teeth, to include extending life by up to 15 years. However, rarely does the general public hear about the psychological benefits of a great smile. Americans spend countless hours ensuring they get regular exercise and eat properly. How often do we think of the importance of our smile? It is the most powerful and positive form of communication we have in defining us when we interact with others. A confident smile makes everyone around you comfortable and lets them know that you are healthy confident and optimistic. Many people are unhappy with their smiles and this can unknowingly lead to a self-conscious or unknowing lack of confidence and awkwardness in public. Are you someone who tries to hide your smile? I interviewed Dr. Maywell L. Inong, a leading Stockton dentist and private practitioner at the head of her field in smile rehabilitation and oral health technology research. Arriving at her office I found a cozy waiting room. It is what you would expect from a small private practice that spends more dedicated time on the individual care of their patients. On my tour I found each of the two exam rooms sported comfortable leather dental chairs with built-in neck and back massagers! After a hectic commute on I-5’s endless construction projects I am tempted to ask the doctor if we can do our interview with me in the dental chair. I manage to hold back my request for now and instead make it to her back office for our meeting. I asked Dr. Inong what types of her treatments are most common for someone that would like to rehabilitate their smile and correspondingly their health and confidence? The doctor stated that for many, porcelain veneers and crowns can be used to transform
twisted, overlapping or crooked teeth into a perfect smile. To straighten front teeth simple orthodontic care may be used which consists of ceramic brackets that only need to remain in place for just a few short months. This is a great option for adults who are mainly concerned about their front teeth and do not want to have long-term conventional braces. Invisalign can also be a great option to straighten teeth without the use of conventional braces. Another way to enhance your smile is to change the appearance of teeth by replacing discolored fillings and crowns. This can be done by replacing older worn out dental work with a tooth-colored composite material or porcelain. Many patients are asking to change out old silver filings with newer more natural materials. Dr. Inong stated that she can also change the shape of teeth, close spaces, change tooth color and straighten crooked teeth with veneers or bonding. As the season for Stockton’s new professional hockey team the Stockton Heat is well underway I simply had to ask the doctor about missing teeth, something hockey players have in abundance! She stated that missing teeth not only affects your smile but also your oral health as it can lead to changes in your mouth by causing teeth to shift, which in turn can cause pain in the jaw muscles and joints. These types of issues may be easily treated with implants or bridges without others ever suspecting real teeth were ever missing. Dr. Inong smiles as she says, “If you ever see a professional hockey player off the ice after the game in a nice suit giving interviews with all of their teeth magically present and accounted for, it would be due to the modern miracle of implants and bridges!” Creating a healthy smile can also address serious oral health problems associated with the gum tissue and gum recession. Receding gums,

if not addressed usually leads to tooth loss and more serious health issues later in life. Dr. Inong offers her patients a new medical technology called Pinhole Surgical Technique (“PST”) in order to bring recessed gum tissue back to its normal healthy position. Unlike traditional gum repair, PST requires no painful gum grafts! PST instead uses collagen to help the body regenerate its own gum tissue. With PST it usually only takes up to 72 hours for full recovery and according to most of her patients it is very much a pain free recovery. PST can be used to treat “black triangles” that develop when bone and tissue recede between the teeth. These empty spaces are prone to food impac-
tion which cause gum tissue to become irritated and painfully inflamed. Dr. Inong is the only dentist within the San Joaquim Valley trained in this new cutting edge technology. Dr. Inong stated that new patients are always welcome to call to make an appointment or they can visit her website (www.InongDental.com). As for where I can buy those cool leather dental massage chairs to use while watching TV in my living room, Dr. Inong just smiled and said though they are generally not available for the general public she has seen used ones come up for public sale on eBay from time to time.
Dr. Maywell L. Inong is a Stockton native practicing in the field of dentistry for over 16 years. As the sole dentist and owner of her practice, she is able to personally interact with and oversee the gentle care and comfort of each of her patients. Dr. Inong places great importance on using many of the latest technologies and procedures available for pain free treatment in general dentistry, implant dentistry and orthodontics in order to maintain great oral health.

Habanero Hots restaurant and cantina has been serving up the heat since the early 80s. With the motto, “Eat the Fajitas, Drink the Margaritas” it’s no wonder this location is a staple in San Joaquin’s Mexican food scene. Their hot sauce shop brings the flavor home with house-made sauces including Ranchero (mild tomato base), Chile Verdo, and Red Enchilada. Take the heat home and infuse your next family meal. Running until January 10th Haggin Museum will feature “Picasso, Miro & Hawaii Five-0” an exhibit showcasing prints that represent key ideas in modern art, the challenge of lithography (a process involving drawing directly on a large piece of limestone) and some of the 20th century’s most important artists- Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, and others. Actor Jack Lord, best known for his role as TV detective Steve McGarrett on the original series Hawaii Five-0, made his first gift to Haggin in 1959, beginning the relationship at the core of this exhibit. Hot Food Trend
Hot in both temperature and trend, gourmet Ramen bowls are making an appearance on many local menus like Komachi, Kyodai, Market Tavern, and more. If you’re thinking of the three-minute dinner that fed you throughout your early 20s, prepare for a creative culinary treat. The soup dances a fine line honoring simplicity and innovation quite effortlessly. The Japanese tradition is trumping U.S. foodies with a Hawaiian Ramen company producing 90,000 servings a day to meet demand.

Though Sacramento is dubbed “America’s farm to fork capital,” San Joaquin is certainly embracing all the goodness that comes with this healthy production and consumption. With such rich agriculture at our finger tips area restaurants, bistros, and eateries are surely supporting local with seasonally and regionally sourced ingredients dominating dishes from appetizers to desserts and all things in between. Eat local, support local, and continue to watch our community thrive. As Paris Hilton says, “That’s hot,” and I’ll say it…because what’s better than a sustainable, thriving community?!

Pitcher Matthew Stalcup has been on a hot streak since he joined the local team in May 2015 after leaving the Beloit Snappers. At 6’2”, 195 lbs., the Pittsburg State alum closed his season with an earned run average of 2.67 and counts 54 strikeouts for his 54 total innings pitched. StocktonPorts.com.

The two-tunnel Bay Delta Conservation Plan constructed by the California Department of Water Resources is intended to each be 35 miles long and 40 feet wide, running from Freeport to Tracy. With a construction and operating cost ringing in at around $60 billion (tax dollars), the tunnels could conceivably carry the whole flow of the Sacramento River during the dry season, with an overall goal of diverting water from Sacramento to San Joaquin, for thirsty industrial farms and Southern California cities. If you’ve noticed “Save the Tunnels” signs and bumper stickers, it’s because environmental groups like the Bay Area Salmon Protection Group, Californians for a Fair Water Policy, and Friends of the River are seriously concerned for the ecosystem, salmon, and the preservation of the last of Northern California’s wild and scenic rivers. They’ve dubbed these tunnels “the worst threat to Northern California rivers in history.”

But not to worry, because we’re here to help you slow things down and put them back into perspective. Your first step? Pick your passion! Because, as our experts can attest, getting out and getting active is the perfect solution to seeing some of that stress slip right off your shoulders! So if you’re the dancing queen, get down with your bad self! Interested in taking things a little slower? Catch your breath with a few gentler yoga moves or the soft, steady steps of Tai Chi Chuan. These exercise styles and so many more are perfect for forcing concentration onto what you’re doing in the here and now, providing a powerful outlet for all those pent up frustrations!
“For optimal health, which includes good energy levels and a good mood, it’s best to incorporate lots of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, as well as whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. If this seems very basic, that’s because it is! The very best diets are the ones that are simple, well-rounded and maintainable.” – Yesenia Cihuacoatl, MS, RD, CDE, Nutrition Manager, St. Joseph’s Medical Center

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
Oh, man. You’ve got that cocktail party coming up, your best friend’s wedding is a few weeks away and swimsuit season is coming up at neck-breaking speeds! Whatever are you to do?! First. Put down that box of ice cream cookie dough and step away from the freezer. Good. You’re on the right path, my friend. So, what’s next? Let’s take a look into the fridge because, believe it or not, your salvation is nigh. Begin by chucking all those brownie bites and saying farewell to those fried foods! It’s time to ditch the junk in favor of all things fit forming! With a plethora of fruits and vegetables at your beck and call, you’ll be able to indulge in your inner foodie without gaining a muffin top! So tame that sweet tooth with a pineapple spear and keep your stomach from growling with some steamed broccoli! Keep powering through your usual workout routine and make sure you’re burning more than you consume!
“Instead of dieting, try simple changes that you can maintain for the rest of your life – they will add up. The easiest place for many to slash calories that will promote gradual weight loss is… not drinking them! I recommend drinking water and other caloriefree beverages.”
– Andrea Chapman, Registered Dietitian, Lodi Health
“Movements like the squat, deadlift, and bench press will add the most mass. [The workout] just needs to be intense and heavy. Then, most importantly, the athlete needs to eat tons of calories!” – Gabe Subry, Crossfit 209 Sport
GAINING MUSCLE with the MASSES
It’s time to pump it up and proudly display those pythons for all to see! Because when you’re hitting the gym in all the right ways, you’ll be plenty happy to provide directions with a perfect point of the finger. Eager to begin? Then get ready to break it down! Building up muscles starts the moment begin tearing them apart. Really! During your workout, you’re straining and breaking down these crucial aspects of yourself so that they can begin anew! And by taking time to rest after your workouts you’re allowing your body time to gather up the essential nutrients it needs to build your muscles back up! So, make sure you’re feeding yourself an ample amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats to keep this machine in fine form.
“One of the best pieces of advice for gaining muscle is to change your training routine frequently. This will help you avoid plateaus, which is when your body gets used to your workouts and stops changing. Your body can adapt quickly to a training program so variety is a critical piece of achieving consistent gains.” – Josh Lyons, In-Shape www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

FIT & HEALTHY Meets with Fun
If you aren’t too keen on hitting the stepper machine and even mentioning the word “burpee” makes your toes curl, perhaps you’re more inclined to mix a bit of fun into your fitness routine! Take Zumba, for example. This dynamic dance routine has been a sensation ever since its conception. Get a bundle of buddies together and take on the Zumba challenge! You’ll be having too much fun to worry about how long you’ve been going strong. If busting a move totally bums your groove, try taking a dip! The benefits of paddling around in the pool, even if you’re just staying afloat in the deep end, are enormous! You’ll be taking it easy on your joints while burning unnecessary calories.
“Zumba is a full body workout that focuses on toning and shaping your legs, hips, thighs, and core as you dance, shake, and shimmy your way through the workout. The music is fun and upbeat and the instructors are trained to create a challenging but very achievable workout that is equal parts fun and effective. It only takes one class to get hooked!” – Ingrid Owen, In-Shape
YOUR Diet Makes all THE DIFFERENCE
Sometimes, all it takes to get yourself feeling the way you ought to be is a few changes in the menu! And with the right state of mind and a little more green on your plate, you’re well on your way to making your dietary changes your new year’s reality! Whenever you’re out on the town or taking a time out at home and ordering in, don’t go for anything with a high-salt, high-sugar, and high-fat combo. This triple-threat was perfectly composed to be highly addicting. Before you know it, you’ll be looking for seconds and thirds, and the more you eat the worst you’ll be feeling.
“Try to abstain from shoving food in your mouth when you are feeling blue or full, it’s only feeding the negative fire within. Lastly, you ARE what you eat…your complexion, energy level, and ability to think are all affected by the foods you put into your system.” – Pam Lewis, Vinyasa Flow Yoga

health | ROBOTIC SURGERY
RECEIVE ADVANCED
Robotic Surgery FOR WOMEN IN WINE COUNTRY BY MELISSA HUTSELL
Dr. Param Gill, a local OB/ GYN, continues to be on the cutting edge of the newest medical technology: robotic surgery. Robotic surgery is the most minimally invasive surgical technique yet. Since 2013, Dr. Gill has performed more than 150 surgeries with this method at her practice. As if that isn’t impressive enough, Dr. Gill is considered one of the pioneers in this field, which has resulted in her doing the most robotic surgeries in the greater Stockton/Lodi area. Contrary to popular belief, robotic surgery operations are performed by the doctor herself with the assistance of an instrument that acts as an extension of her hands and eyes, says Dr. Gill. The instrument is a sophisticated tool that consists of robotic arms. These ‘arms’ hold surgical tools and translate the surgeon’s wrist, hand and finger movements. These movements are so precise as to be able to peel the skin off a grape and stitch it back on, thereby balancing the surgeon’s slightest hand gestures and magnifying the doctor’s view. The surgeon has complete control of the device and each of its arms while sitting at a con-
sole in the operating room near the patient. Surgeons guide the tools while viewing a 3-D, high definition screen, allowing the doctor to see 10 times the magnification of the naked eye. Clearer optics enables doctors to zoom in, assess finer details, and be more efficient. So why choose robotic surgery for your gynecological needs? For Dr. Gill’s patients, this surgical option offers a shorter recovery time so patients are back to work and family life sooner. Perhaps the most impressive and worthwhile benefit is that the procedure is cosmetically advantageous, explains Dr. Gill. “Patients can expect less bleeding, less pain, less scaring, fewer adhesions, and a much quicker recovery.” Small, precise incisions lower the risk of infection, adhesions and blood clots. And that is just scratching the surface of what robotic surgery offers patients, not only at her practice, but also in any general surgery case. “This is a new approach for anybody that needs surgery.” Dr. Gill and her team, which includes Dr. Jacqualin Miller (who is trained in minimally invasive surgical procedures from Stanford University), have advanced their skill set to encompass robotic single-site surgery, which consists of one small incision made through the patient’s belly’s button. “This is an example of the technological progression within medicine,” adds Dr. Gill, “When you see the results, it makes you a believer. The marriage of technology with surgery takes us to a whole new level of providing care to our patients.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Single-Site, Robotic-Assisted Hysterectomy Surgery
Gill OB/GYN Medical Group is the first in San Joaquin County to offer scarless hysterectomy surgery. Unlike most hysterectomies where a visible incision is made, this scarless surgery is thanks to a dime-sized incision made through the belly button. Belly button incisions mean less pain, quicker recovery, no scaring.
Dr. Gill is highly experienced and expertly trained in robotic surgery for women.

“Creating beautiful smiles for patients is my passion,” beams Dr. Christopher von Tersch. “Smiles are often the first thing we notice about a person. and esthetics in Stockton for over 15 years. He graduated in the top 6% of his class from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and then studied esthetic dentistry and smile design in U.O.P’s post graduate program. Dr. von Tersch has taken numerous continuing education courses, including esthetics, material science, bite mechanics, and implant restoration.
“Most patients are unaware of the possibilities regarding their smiles,” says Dr. von Tersch with a twinkle in his eye. “When I do a smile design consultation, I listen to the patient, we look at photographs of their smile and ‘codiscover’ the possibilities. As patients experience my enthusiasm, they become inspired and more engaged in the planning process. This collaborative approach is exciting to myself and the patient and tends to produce a more personalized result. Since every patient is unique, each treatment plan is one of a kind. Regardless of how large or small the treatment plan, the goal is the same. To create a beautiful, natural-looking result that inspires a life full of radiant smiles. “Our patients at Deer Park Dental receive such wonderful care because our whole team is dedicated to treating them like family.” Dr. von Tersch combines compassion, gentleness, patience, humor and attention to detail to provide his patients with wonderful visits and a lifetime of beautiful, healthy smiles.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
For more than 50 years, the Zeiter family has been providing residents of San Joaquin County the gift of sight. The practice started with Henry Zeiter, who founded Zeiter Eye Medical Group in 1962. Since then, three other Zeiters have joined the practice: Joe Zeiter, John Zeiter, and, most recently, Joe’s son, Joseph Zeiter, Jr. The newest member of the Zeiter team, Dr. Joseph, states, “Treating eye disease is the family business. We love our practice and we love our patients.” In addition to its seven eye surgeons, Zeiter Eye has seven optometrists. The practice provides a number of services, including cataract surgery, Lasik, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, and eye exams at its locations in Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, and Sonora. Dr. Joseph is happy to be back in the Central Valley after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from UC San Diego and completing medical school at Wayne State University. He performed his internship at the University of Arizona in Tucson and completed his residency at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit. Today, Dr. Joseph spends his days performing everything from general eye exams to complex eye surgery. Dr. Joseph enjoys the cutting-edge technology that Zeiter Eye offers its patients and carrying on the tradition of performing free cataract surgery for the uninsured in the community.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the major cause of tooth loss in adults and children. There are several types and stages of the disease, all of which start with an infection of the gums that can move into the bones and ligaments that support the teeth. In the beginning stages, it is often detected by a dentist or dental hygienist during regular checkups. If left untreated gums and bone can become so seriously damaged, that teeth can fall out or have to be removed. More than half of all adults, and three quarters of adults over 35, have some form of periodontal disease. Even young children can exhibit signs, and in need of extensive work including extraction. If you plan to make your teeth last a lifetime, it’s important to understand the causes, treatment, and prevention of periodontal disease. What causes Periodontal Disease? When plaque is not removed from the teeth regularly, it forms a hard, porous substance called calculus, or tartar. If calculus forms on the roots of the teeth below
the gum line, it irritates the gums even further and contributes to even more plaque collection and disease. How can Periodontal Disease be treated? New advances in medications for the treatment of periodontal disease exist. The best method is to schedule an appointment with your dentist, and follow his/her advice. If severe disease exists, a specialist may be necessary. Your dentist will know how to treat your disease. How can Periodontal Disease be prevented? The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to practice good oral hygiene. It is never too early to start prevention. Brushing your baby’s gums before the first tooth erupts starts great habits of brushing and leads to adulthood continuing to brush and floss every day. Eating a balanced diet and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist are essential to keeping periodontal disease at bay. And by doing so, you’ll increase your chances of keeping your teeth for a lifetime! Happy brushing and keep smiling!!!

Now don’t get us wrong it’s still the glitz capital of the world-where else can you see so much neon and huge replicas of Paris’ Eiffel Tower, Egypt’s Sphinx and pyramids, plus New York’s skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty all within a few blocks of each other? For more information on all things mentioned in this article go to: LasVegas.com or just do a Google search.
It’s been quite a few years since we’d been to Vegas and was pleasantly surprised at the numerous changes we encountered. Naturally, the casinos and major name entertainment are still of paramount importance for those folks who enjoy either or both. One of our Vegas sources indicated that with the ever-increasing competition from California’s Native American casinos the city really needed to reinvent itself with lots of new features, activities, and events that would appeal to a broader range of visitors- especially

the good life | POWER OF ATTORNEY
Decoding
POAS BY NORA HESTON TARTE
There are a lot of misconceptions associated with a Power of Attorney. Trying to understand the who, what, when, where and why of the legal document that allows another person to act in your place when you are unable is a complicated feat. Allow us to arm you with all you need to know to decode the POA alphabet soup, and get you started on the track to obtaining this important tool.
110
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
WHAT IS A POA?
A POA—which stands for Power of Attorney— is a legal document individuals file to give another person the ability to handle their finances and make life decisions in the case that they cannot. This is often associated with individuals undergoing medical treatment or who have a potentially life-threatening illness. However, unexpected occurrences can arise at any time, which is why everyone—regardless of age—should have a POA filed. A person who takes on these duties is often referred to as a POA, as well. This way, in the event that a person becomes unconscious, disabled or otherwise unable to make sound life decisions, including those that relate to their finances, another person will have the power to act on their behalf.
WHO SHOULD BE YOUR POA?
Appointing a POA is an important decision, and it should not be taken lightly. Sit down and have a conversation with anyone you are considering making your POA. This way, you can address any concerns they have regarding the position as well as discuss your life preferences in the case that your POA will be called to act in your place.
Foremost, a POA should be someone that you trust. This person should be made aware of your financial and legal affairs, as well as have access to all information they may need to carry out your wishes should the need arise. Consider this role like a job. Whoever you select should be organized, have an eye for detail, a
commitment to you or the position at hand, a clear idea of the expectations they assume in this role and an understanding of finances and even business so they may connect with accountants, attorneys and other parties if necessary. Many POAs are children or spouses. However, consider the breadth of your business and financial circumstances before choosing your next of kin. If these reach beyond the knowledge of those closest to you, consider choosing a POA that better understands your financial and business goals and will act in your best interest on these matters.
WHEN SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A POA?
Don’t wait. All adults should have a POA in place. Once a POA is filed, it will remain in tact until you revoke it, or until you die. One common misconception is that if you are married, your spouse www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
will already have POA privilege. This is not the case. Even a husband or wife can run into complications while trying to navigate the red tape that surrounds your finances.
WHY HAVE A POA?
A POA is put in place to protect you as well as to relieve some of the stress your family may face were the worst to happen. If a POA is not filed, families are forced to undergo a guardianship proceeding to decide who should be given the duties typically held by a POA. This can be both a timely and costly process. If your POA has already been appointed, it can be avoided.
WHERE CAN YOU OBTAIN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A POA?
A local attorney can provide information about a POA document, including how to file one and what powers the person will be granted.

Welcome to Midgley’s Public House. A showstopping dining experience that first opened in the late months of 2014, represented by a coat of arms honoring Michael’s English roots. “A public house, historically, is a huge community meeting place. I thought it was a fitting name.” Michael Midgley, chef and owner of Midgley’s Public House, has been dedicated to bringing his own culinary tastes to San Joaquin from the moment he first began his cooking career. “My thoughts about it were to cook wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted,” Michael points out. “I really like the fact that I can come in on a whim and create specials.”

These specials are often inspired by local tastes and flavors that surround him. “I like to try and get out, even if it’s just a local destination.” From a backyard barbecue to the great outdoors, Michael is always on the lookout for inspiration. The results of these excursions are on display as weekend specials or week-long menu options. With so much around him to pull ideas from, it’s no surprise he’s developed such delicious menu options that have stuck around for the long haul. The Prime Rib Dip is a hot sandwich composed of pepper jack cheese, horseradish, caramelized onion, and au jus prepared from roasting the beef. Served on a soft roll, it’s layered on with hearty prime rib and sent on its way! If you’ve got more of a sweet tooth you’ll enjoy the Midgley Mudd Pie, a warm triple chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. Add whip cream on top and pile on caramel, chocolate

sauce, and candied pecans for the ultimate dessert. When you need catering for your special occasion, try on Midgley’s larger than life main course! Customers can order a full sized pig for their event, seasoned with a simple blend of salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil. “We have a really special hog roasting machine,” Michael explains. “We roast a 30 to 40lb pig. [It] cooks in its own fat and steam. We bring it out and guests can take pictures with it.” The platinum hog roaster is a prime specialty of Michael’s that has made his restaurant the talk of the town. Whether you’re dining

in or planning for a delivery, the porker will easily provide for up to twenty guests. As a certified steakhouse, Midgley’s takes pride in serving only the best in meat selections. Whether a customer orders a Tomahawk steak or an Angus burger, they’re receiving top quality, certified Angus beef and nothing less. These dishes, and so much more are offered on Midgley’s everchanging menu, and that includes drinks! “We have a nice selection of signature cocktails with a unique and modern spin. A really great selection of local wines, draft beers… Some rotate, some have been on from the very beginning.” Midgley’s Public House and its chef have also become a huge beacon for his community. When he’s not in the kitchen, Michael is constantly
donating his time and efforts toward various charities from across San Joaquin. “My father told me, growing up, that if you do for your community, your community will do for you. Whether it’s a gift card, or giving a demo for a luncheon, I try and give back as much as I can.” His efforts have helped support March of Dimes, First Tee of San Joaquin and more. It’s fitting then that on the coat of arms situated in his restaurant, the motto reads: Reach out to give and take. As Michael states, it really does go “Hand in hand with helping and serving in the community.” DIG IN:

FROZEN Meyer Lemon MOUSSE INGREDIENTS:
1 cup freshly squeezed Meyer lemon juice Grated zest of 2 Meyer lemons ¾ cup sugar4 large egg yolks • 2 cups heavy cream PREPARATION:
Combine the lemon juice and lemon zest in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, or until fragrant. Strain through a fine mesh sieve. Return the lemon juice to the pan and add the sugar. Bring to a boil and simmer until an instant-read thermometer registers 230˚F. When the sugar syrup is nearly ready, start whipping the egg yolks in a mixer fitted with a whip attachment. With the motor running on high, add the hot sugar syrup in a thin stream. Continue to whip on high until light and fluffy and cooled to room temperature. Whip the cream to soft peaks. Stir 1/3 of the cream into the yolk mixture, then fold in the remaining cream. Divide the mixture among 8 acetatelined individual cake rings on a parchment-lined baking tray. Freeze for 4 to 6 hours, or until solid. To unmold, transfer the frozen mousses to dessert plates. Slide off the cake rings and peel away the acetate. *Recipe courtesy of HungryCravings.com

PRIE Winery:
A Passionate, Personal Lodi Love Affair BY NORA HESTON TARTE
PRIE—which opened its Lodi tasting room in April 2015—is one of the newest wineries to join Lodi’s eclectic group of artisanal wineries. Owners John and Lisa Gash took their home venture commercial in 2010, crafting wines mostly from Livermore Valley. However, sourcing grapes from the Lodi region for their 2011 PRIE Lodi Zinfandel opened their eyes to what the Central Valley appellation has to offer. The couple looked over many potential “permanent homes,” but Lodi was just the right fit, and it made sense considering the couple has been sourcing grapes from Lodi exclusively since 2012. “In the end we felt a greater affinity to Lodi and the potential for growth and 122

recognition,” John explains. “We share a goal to foster Lodi’s visibility as a premiere and approachable region for vineyards and wine.” The 10-acre winery on Alpine Road has plans to produce 2000 cases annually and is primarily planted to Cabernet Sauvignon grapes right now, but John and his team—including Manager Mike Anagnos who oversees the grounds—have been working hard to convert portions of the Cabernet Sauvignon vines over to new varietals including Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. And while the small production vineyard feels camaraderie with their neighbors, they are anything but a cookie-cutter vineyard. Here staff is passionate about getting
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JANUARY 2016
up close and personal with the production process to create handcrafted, elegant wines. “We are often walking our vineyards, checking in on them,” John admits. “I draw the line at singing to them. That might do more harm than good.” While the petite vineyard works to expand its tasting menu, PRIE staff pours a selection of wines from 11 AM-5 PM, Friday-Sunday. In addition to their Zinfandel, Vermentino, Pinot Noir and Merlot—all from Northern California AVAs—the winery presents two blends, both from the Livermore Valley. The 2011 Sixty7 is a Merlot/Syrah combination while the 2011 PI is a blend of Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and Syrah. As the Bay Area natives acclimate to their new home and expand their work with Lodi fruit, fans of the vineyard have “some cool stuff” to look forward to, including a Carignan from Spenker Ranch, a Petite Sirah from Jason Eels, and an old vine Angelica. The 2015 harvest will also turn out some local crops, including the grapes needed to produce a 100 percent Lodi PI (π) blend. And while the work is already underway, in order to bottle the best, the hometown blend won’t be ready until 2018.
In the meantime, John and his family are getting their hands dirty. The same handcrafted appeal of their vino medley is present in the facilities where the current tasting room—an extension of the winery’s outdoor rooms—features a bar made from the barn’s repurposed wood by John and his father-in-law, Gordy. Here, their hands-on approach results in a unique space where guests can connect with nature as they sip Northern California varietals in the busy yet serene Lodi appellation. “We can throw open the doors and take over the areas under the trees,” John says. “We planned this to provide a relaxing place to hang out with a book or friends.” Crafting this new space and undergoing many changes has been hard work no doubt, but that doesn’t take away from the fun John and Lisa are having creating this new home for local aficionados to gather. “There is a deep well of energy when you are passionate about your work,” he says.

All BOTTLEDUp NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: Sip outside your comfort zone
Each January, roughly one in three hopeful Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. Get organized; break a bad habit; join a gym (and actually go); take a trip. Recent studies have shown that the sad truth about New Year’s resolutions is that about 88% of those people who set one will fail to keep it. Hey, we know it’s tough to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the confetti but it’s not impossible. This year, make a resolution that you can keep and pledge to sip outside your comfort zone by choosing a Lodi wine varietal that you’re less familiar with. And with more than 100 winegrape varieties being cultivated in the region, it shouldn’t be hard to find a wine varietal that you haven’t tried. Here are three suggestions of unique wines that you should resolve to sip in the coming year:
BOKISCH VINEYARDS 2012 LODI GRACIANO (grah-ee-YAH-noh) The proud recipient of a Double Gold Medal (98 points) and Best Other Red Varietal from 2015 California State Fair, this stunning wine exhibits plummy layers of ripe figs and blueberry pie with complexities suggesting Mexican-spiced dark chocolate and sweet, almost cumin-like earthiness. With moderate tannins and body, this wine is perfect on its own or paired with duck with rich cherry reduction, herb-crusted rack of lamb or a dish of hearty pasta Bolognese. ($23) BokischVineyards.com
HERITGE OAK WINERY 2012 OLD VINE LODI CARIGNANE (kar-in-YON) Hailing from the old, gnarled vines of Lodi’s Rauser Vineyard, planted in 1909 along the south bank of the Mokelumne River, this unique and intense wine is rich in flavors of dark, brambly blackberries with whispers of black current. Aged in neutral oak barrels for 18 months, this wine’s long, graceful finish is made for full-flavored dishes like lasagna, braised veal shanks (Osso Buco), and beef stew. This wine is a limited production at only 125 cases. ($28) HeritageOakWinery.com
HUNTER’S OAK 2012 LODI PETIT VERDOT (puh-TEE vehr-DOH) This powerful yet elegantlystyled Bordeaux wine balances deep, inky flavors of plum and currants with silky dark chocolate and hints of blackberries, caramel, leather and vanilla. Aggressive tannins and bright acidity combined with sweet French Oak creates a rustic wine just right for serving alongside high protein red meat dishes such as BBQ spare ribs, ribeye steak or grilled sausages. ($32) HuntersOakVineyard.com
WHERE TO FIND THESE WINES: Pick up these Lodi wines from the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center 2545 W. Turner Rd., Lodi, (209) 365-0621. Open daily 10AM-5PM. LodiWine.com

Used as a bread dipper or a butter substitute, olive oil popularity has picked up with local vineyards that are perfecting the craft. With original offerings and unusual flavors, it can be hard to choose which dressing to drizzle on your holiday salad. If you’re looking to go local, try the organic, nonGMO-certified, sustainably farmed Bozzano Olive Ranch, run by fourth generation San Joaquin Valley farmers in Stockton. Step outside of the box with the Blood Orange Organic Flavored Olive Oil. The citrus taste adds a dose of deep blood orange flavor to any dish, from cakes to chutney. 126

Olives are milled from October to December during fall harvest and available in two sizes, 250 ML and 500 ML. The blood orange flavor, which is also gluten-free, was rolled out in August, along with three other new, organic flavors—Fresh Garlic, Meyer Lemon, and Basil—as well as four organic balsamic vinegars— Traditional, Apricot, Fig, and Bing Cherry.

Known for its collection of American and English-style dishes, The Dancing Fox in Lodi serves up salad with a sizzle. This Southwestern dish features fresh citrus-marinated black beans and corn, tomatoes and avocado on a bed of baby greens and romaine hearts, finished with a drizzle of chipotle ranch, a sprinkle of cheddar cheese and tri-color corn chips. Guests can turn up the heat on this crunchy creation with a helping of salsa, available upon request. If your appetite warrants a little more, top it off with chicken, for an extra fee. This mouthwatering treat is available from 11 AM to 5 PM. 132

It’s hard to consider a meal at The Dancing Fox complete without a glass of vino. Light, white wines give a semblance of summer in the middle of winter when paired with a salad. So reach for a glass—or a bottle—of Chardonnay, Fire Dance, Chenin Blanc or Muscato. If wine won’t hit the spot, order a brew. The Dancing Fox rotates beers on tap, and sells a sampler of 4 oz. pours.
